This weekend in movie theaters, all across the country, the gospel will also be proclaimed as a movie called <em>Woodlawn<\/em> comes to town. Here\u2019s co-producer and director Jon Erwin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> If you look at the history of Christianity, we hold the message as sacred, not the mechanism of delivery. One is absolutely unchanging\u2014God is the same today, yesterday and forever. The other changes\u2014as it changes, you have to take whatever the microphone of the day is. To me, mass entertainment\u2014big movies, blockbusters, television shows\u2014this is the new way to get the attention of a generation. What it would take is enough Christians in America, unifying culturally at the movie theater, and making enough noise to get the attention of a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for Thursday, October 15<sup>th<\/sup>. I\u2019m having the popcorn delivered a little later because we are going to talk about movies today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I love movies and popcorn together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to use this opportunity just to talk, not only about the movie, but I want to begin by just saying a \u201cThank you,\u201d and a shout-out to the donors who make this radio show possible. I love it that we have Legacy Partners who give on a monthly basis\u2014thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also want to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d because we get to bring a broadcast like today\u2019s broadcast\u2014some great news to you. There are really some <em>terrific<\/em> young men and women, especially young men like Jon Erwin, who joins us here on the broadcast, who are using their talent for the purposes and glory of God. They\u2019re difference-makers. You need to cheer them on. I\u2019m going to give you an opportunity to make a difference, where you are, because you can help do something about the theme of what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re all going to get a chance to cheer on Jon, and his brother Andy, and the team that has been at work because this weekend is the release of a brand-new film that\u2019s going to be in theaters. It\u2019s going to be in your neighborhood. We\u2019re hoping a lot of our listeners will go out this weekend and see <em>Woodlawn<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is a true story. Jon Erwin has made other movies\u2014<em>October Baby<\/em>, some of you have seen that \/ <em>Mom\u2019s Night Out<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJon, you said this is a pretty expensive movie. You\u2019re going for it on this movie; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Yes, <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is one of the more expensive independent Christian films since <em>The Passion of the Christ<\/em>. Yes, the 25 million dollars that it took is a lot of money to both make and market the film. But you know, the way I look at it\u2014it\u2019s only about a third of what <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> spent to get the attention of a generation. So we really have to ask the question now: \u201cHow much do we care? How much do we want a generation [who is] leaving the church?\u201d I believe that if the answer to that question is: \u201cWe want our generation,\u201d then we have to put the gospel on the biggest stage possible, not the smallest stage possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> We have to really reach and really dream. I believe that it\u2019s sustainable, and it can work. It could lead to one of the greatest innovations in Christian film. So <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014 true story from the 1970\u2019s \/ football film\u2014but it\u2019s also a film about the power of revival, and spiritual awakening, and racial reconciliation through Christ. It\u2019s a great opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s what I wanted to talk about it. I forget\u2014when did we talk about this? You kind of ran this by us when it was more of a concept and you really hadn\u2019t\u2014I don\u2019t think you had doubled down on it, at that point\u2014but we talked about this movie some time back. The reason I had an interest in it was because, it not only occurred in a time when I was coming spiritually-alive and a part of the Jesus movement and an awakening, but I was actually at an event that you feature in the film called Explo \u201972. We\u2019ll talk about that in a minute, but go back to the beginning\u2014just unpack what the movie is all about\u2014and what\u2019s the genesis of the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Well, the amazing thing about <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is that a dear friend and mentor, Pastor Michael Catt, said to me, over a year ago last summer\u2014he said, \u201cYou need to go make this film,\u201d to Andy and me. He said, \u201cI think America is going to be ready for this film.\u201d Those words could not have been more prophetic because <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is a story about a school in Birmingham, Alabama\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014public school in 1973 \/ my hometown\u2014that was going to close because of violence due to integration\u2014nothing could fix it. As you know, Birmingham had been kind of ripped in half during [the] Civil Rights [Movement]. So many of those emotions were so present and nothing could fix it. It was a true story\u2014it really happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne night, the entire football team, 44-48 players, committed their lives to Christ and committed to love each other in a school and a city that didn\u2019t know what that meant. It literally saved their school and shook the city of Birmingham. Led to\u2014out of that\u2014this quiet kid named Tony becoming the first African-American superstar in Birmingham\u2014recruited heavily by Bear Bryant, who is played by Academy-award winner, Jon Voight, in the film\u2014does a magnificent job. Somehow, he became a beacon of hope in a way that the city could kind of heal. It led to the largest high school football game ever played, to this day, in Alabama. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just, to me, shows the power of the gospel to deal with things we\u2019re dealing with today. I don\u2019t think hatred, prejudice, racism\u2014these are not things that you can just stop doing\u2014they are in our nature, as human beings. As a good friend, Benjamin Watson \/ plays for New Orleans, said: \u201cThis is not a skin problem. It\u2019s a sin problem.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that through the lens of a true story\u2014I love that it is a true story because it\u2019s undeniable \/ you can\u2019t argue with the truth\u2014the thing that fixed it at Woodlawn High School was Jesus Christ and the power of the gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the images in the movie that just arrested my attention\u2014you have a scene, as the school day starts, in that Woodlawn High School, where the African-American students are behind a\u2014it looks like a jail cell\u2014bars that are locked up with a chain. They were not allowed into the school but were locked up behind that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> It was a <em>dark<\/em> time. Reading Tandy Gerelds\u2019 diary\u2014the real coach\u2014which is really why we wanted to make the movie \/ it was powerful that he was a cynic\u2014he didn\u2019t want to believe what was happening on his team. Finally, it was so undeniable that <em>he<\/em> made a decision for Christ, which is powerful in the movie. The prayer that changed his life was literally, \u201cGod I don\u2019t know if You\u2019re real but I want whatever my players have.\u201d Just reading his journals\u2014it was just\u2014they had tried everything and nothing worked. They had tried separating the students \/ they tried a lot of things. He described it as a war zone. It was the gospel that fixed the problem and began to spread to the entire school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s cool because Birmingham is my hometown. I remember seeing Freedom Riders, and some other documentaries, and some things\u2014just dumbstruck\/horrified, thinking: \u201cThis happened in my city. How could this have happened in my city?\u201d because, growing up in Birmingham, I didn\u2019t feel those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, having traveled all over the country frequently, there\u2019s just something different about Birmingham. There\u2019s healing that took place in Birmingham on this issue, and you can feel it in the city. I say that as someone that has grown up in the city. It\u2019s traceable to this event and others like it in the Jesus movement. God just did a work of healing in the city of Birmingham around a kind of a slow-burn revival in the city of Birmingham. It\u2019s fascinating to go back to a true story and to see what works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we are all asking the question, as Americans: \u201cWhat is the answer? What works?\u201d Again, this is such a great opportunity for Christians to step up. I remember talking to Mike Huckabee, who was at Explo \u201972 with you\u2014probably didn\u2019t see you there\u2014and whose life was changed there. Just talking about the Jesus movement and that great movement of God, unlike anything I\u2019ve experienced in my lifetime, and I just said, \u201cHow much did desperation have to play in what happened in this generation?\u201d He said: \u201cWe were desperate. We were desperate. Nothing was working. Nothing would make us happy. The world was a scary place.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told him\u2014I said, \u201cI feel like that desperation\u2019s returning.\u201d I think that there is a generation begging for answers. I think there is a generation confused. I think that they want Christ\u2014they just don\u2019t know it yet. Sometimes you have to take the method of the day or the mechanism of the day\u2014and I think there\u2019s no greater tool than movies and mass entertainment to reach a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Having lived in those days, there was desperation back then. I think the same bent of bewilderment, and confusion, and fear that grips the church today was evident back then. They did not know what to do. But in the midst of that, there emerged a movement of young people, who\u2014yes it was a lot of zeal, without knowledge\u2014and did they go off into extremes and push the edges?\u2014no doubt about it\u2014but Jesus Christ got proclaimed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, the gospel became the issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your movie is really a flashback to what was the last great American revival. You show it in a microcosm how that reviving work of God in one city had a transforming effect on individuals, on a group of people, on a high school\u2014ultimately, the rival team.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. All that really happened\u2014absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You [Jon] weren\u2019t alive when that happened\u2014we [Dennis and Bob] remember. My son said to me\u2014we were talking about <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014he said, \u201cSo, do you and Mom, as you look back, would you say you were converted during that revival?\u201d I thought and I said, \u201cI guess we were. We\u2019re a product of that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that we thought of it in the terms of like a great American awakening, back in the late \u201860s and the \u201870s; but from this vantage point, we can look back and say, \u201cIt was.\u201d Your movie is saying, \u201cThe problems that we\u2019re experiencing today \/ the only hope is that that happen again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Absolutely; absolutely right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want to ask you to just confirm that this is a true story\u2014one aspect of it. There was a point where the team was going to be led by a person on the field with a prayer, right before the game?\u2014is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>Before the game, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the principal is up in the stadium\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the press box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014yes; and he walks over and unplugs the sound system because he doesn\u2019t want a prayer to occur on the playing field in the stadium with all these people there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> It\u2019s a powerful moment in the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Is that true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> I would say\u2014if you talk about <em>Woodlawn<\/em> as a story\u2014of what\u2019s the typical film translation we have based on a true story, inspired by a true story and inspired by actual events \/ you get further away from the truth\u2014<em>Woodlawn <\/em>adheres strictly to the truth because what happened was so profound. The only thing that we do, in terms of to make it a movie, is liberties that involve compression because we have to tell the story in a small form\u2014and then composite characters \/ sometimes, you\u2019ve got to make two or three people and make them into one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that instance, there was a prayer at Legion Field\u201442,000 people \/ largest to ever see\u2014and the bureaucracy did not want to see it happen. There was controversy around it \/ there was debate over it\u2014and it happened. That happened over the course of a couple of weeks. We compressed that moment into one singular scene in the film, but the conflict was very real.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What happens in the movie is\u2014the principal pulls the plug on the sound system and so the guy praying can\u2019t repeat the Lord\u2019s Prayer. But I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014what happened\u2014the people in the stands\u2014they begin to recite the prayer from memory, the Lord\u2019s Prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> You know what\u2019s going to be cool when you see that in the theater is\u2014we do visual effects so the mass crowds in the film\u2014the most people we ever had was about 1,000 extras in the cold in Birmingham. Forty-two thousand people were at the game\u2014so we use these incredible artists to create these computer-generated crowds. They are unbelievable \/ they are so photo real. The problem is\u2014digital people don\u2019t talk: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2014talk\u2014like\u2014this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we thought about: \u201cHow do we get this sound of 42,000 people saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer?\u201d We also thought about: \u201cWhat are our core beliefs? So our core\u2014one of our real core beliefs is that the local church is the real hope for the world\u201d; but it would take a unified church to change the world. I <em>pray<\/em> that that happens \/ we\u2019re so divided. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought about, \u201cWhat if we asked churches, from all over the country, to record themselves, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer?\u201d so that the sound you hear in that scene of 42,000 people saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer together\u2014and you\u2019re going to hear it in surround sound\u2014is the church, all around America \/ churches from all over the country, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer together, as one. I can\u2019t tell you what a unified church <em>looks<\/em> like; but if you go see <em>Woodlawn<\/em>, you can hear what a unified church <em>sounds<\/em> like. It\u2019s going to be a really cool thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe video has had\u2014that we put out\u2014has had a quarter million hits\u2014all these uploads of people\u2014they are getting into it; and they record themselves, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer. It\u2019s a great moment in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it does\u2014it is kind of a microcosm of what needs to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time for unity \/ it\u2019s time for boldness in the church\u2014at least, my Bible says, \u201c\u2026on this rock I\u2019ll build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Matthew 16:18].\u201d Okay\u2014a gate is not an offensive weapon\u2014nobody\u2019s going to attack you with a gate \/ nobody is going to throw a gate at you. A gate is a defensive mechanism, meaning\u2014for a gate to not be able to prevail, we have to storm it. We were built for offense \/ we\u2019re not built for defense. As Christians, we\u2019re not built for cultural defense\u2014it\u2019s not what we\u2019re designed for. We\u2019re designed for offense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time, culturally, to get bold; and it\u2019s time, culturally, to unify. I think that that\u2019s what we\u2019re built for. I don\u2019t think this defensive strategy, culturally\u2014where we kind of cower into submission\u2014is working. I think it\u2019s time to change. That\u2019s why I love that <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is\u2014again, we\u2019re really trying to go compete on a generation\u2019s turf, played by their rules, and beat them at their own game. We want to earn their attention by putting the gospel on a grand stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the coolest things we\u2019ve discovered in two years of research is that the generation leaving the church\u2014this grand problem we face \/ some people would say \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t70 percent of a spiritually-engaged teen leaves the church when they graduate high school\u2014they haven\u2019t come back yet \/ they might never come back. If you study frequent movie goers, that is this group of people buying the vast majority of movie tickets\u201440 million people buying 800 million movie tickets \/ 20 each\u2014it\u2019s almost a dead match \/ there they are. Do you know where they\u2019re going when they leave the church? Do you want to know where this new\u2014what people would call the \u201cun-reached people group\u201d in America\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying the young people, who are leaving the church, are the ones who are buying the movie tickets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. It\u2019s almost a statistical dead match. We\u2019ve done a <em>huge<\/em> study on what motivates their behavior. This little thing called FoMO motivates almost all their decisions\u2014it\u2019s the <u>F<\/u>ear <u>o<\/u>f <u>M<\/u>issing <u>O<\/u>ut. What\u2019s happened is\u2014the average teenager has about 250 friends on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, but the number of people that you can count on in the event of a life crisis has been steadily declining since the 1950s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve gotten more \u201cconnected\u201d\u2014I say that in [quotations]\u2014but we\u2019ve gotten much lonelier. In that loneliness has become this insatiable desire to belong to something and an incredible <em>fear<\/em> of missing out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the thesis is this: \u201cIf enough Christians could unify together, culturally, and make enough noise, like a Joshua strategy\u2014at the battle of Jericho they all had to yell at the same time\u2014then we could get a generation back, by sheer curiosity, not of the church, but at the movie theater. Maybe then we could drive them from the movie theater back to church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is become our vision. I feel just like, if you look at the history of Christianity, we hold the message as sacred, not the mechanism of delivery. One is absolutely unchanging\u2014God is the same today, yesterday, and forever. The other changes\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as it changes, you have to take whatever the microphone of the day is\u2014like radio, like the printing press \/ like Martin Luther\u2019s translation of the Bible\u2014all the way back to the Roman Road. The Roman Road was for military expansion for commerce. We didn\u2019t build them, but they were there\u2014we use them. To me, mass entertainment\u2014big movies, blockbusters, television shows\u2014America\u2019s largest or second-largest export\u2014this is the new Roman Road. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is the new way to get the attention of a generation. What it would take is enough Christians in America unifying, culturally at the movie theater, and making enough noise to get the attention of a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like sometime in the next 72 hours is what you have in mind?\u2014right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> I would say we are pursuing this with everything we have. [Laughter] It is all on the line with <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014so I offer that as an example.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, when you say \u201cnext 72 hours,\u201d explain what you mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m talking about opening weekend for <em>Woodlawn<\/em> because that\u2019s what this is. The movie\u2019s going to be in hundreds of theaters\u2014it\u2019s a wide roll-out movie, and it launches this weekend. We\u2019ve told our listeners this before\u2014but you can no longer think, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll see it next weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe decision about whether a movie even shows up next weekend is based on how many people show up this weekend. The most important thing people can do\u2014first of all, to have a great movie experience \/ but also to make a statement in the culture\u2014 is to show up Friday night, Saturday, [or] Sunday\u2014say, \u201cWe\u2019re here to see <em>Woodlawn,<\/em>\u201d\u2014pay your money, and go see the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And bring a crowd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s the thing\u2014and that is what I\u2019m asking for\u2014sometimes, you just have to be bold and ask. People ask me, all the time, as Christians: \u201cWhy do I have to go see the movie in theaters. Why should I?\u201d The answer is simple\u2014is that, again\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me just answer the first part of it, and you can fill the rest in. The first reason is you\u2019re going to love the movie. It is entertaining, off the charts; and it is a powerful emotional movie that I promise you\u2014you will weep during it, and you will pound the table during it\u2014it has a great message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>Good to know. Thank you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It feels a little like a one- \/ two-punch because I\u2019m still talking to people, who are still processing and still reeling from <em>War Room<\/em> when it came out. It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cOkay, now go get a second injection,\u201d if you will, because these two really do\u2014there\u2019s some connection between them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Hey, you couldn\u2019t have written this. I love Stephen and Alex [Kendrick]. It was my time on the movie, <em>Courageous<\/em>, when Alex asked me, \u201cJon what\u2019s your purpose and the purpose of your work?\u201d that really moved me from a career as an award-winning music video director with my brother to a calling which was to use my gifts for a higher purpose. So with <em>War Room<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s incredible to see that their movie is on prayer and ours is on revival and spiritual awakening because one <em>always<\/em> leads to the other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, it does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> So, we\u2019re really excited\u2014they are perfectly \/ it\u2019s so cool to see their positioning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014synced up; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t plan this\u2014it\u2019s just unbelievable. I just really believe that\u2014everywhere I go, around to Christian leaders, this sentence keeps coming up, independently, which is that: \u201cThis is our time.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can\u2019t do anything about the past\u2014it\u2019s over \/ it\u2019s done\u2014but we can change the future if we work together, and we work together right now. It would take us all unified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that people don\u2019t understand\u2014there\u2019s these little things called \u201coutput deals\u201d in film\u2014I\u2019ll give you an example. Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> paid us several hundred thousand dollars to put <em>October Baby<\/em> in their library\u2014not because they wanted to \/ because they had to\u2014because we distribute through Samuel Goldwyn Films. I didn\u2019t have to have an ideological debate about a pro-life movie in their library. Not only did they have to take it, they had to give it the same terms \/ they had to give it the same platform. Okay; foreign distribution works the same way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we could learn to compete\u2014not with other Christian films\u2014but if we can learn to compete with <em>Jurassic World<\/em>, and <em>Star Wars<\/em>, and <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014which we can\u2014there\u2019s enough of us \/ we have enough resources. We have just not had a unified strategy, and we have not had the will; but if we could learn to compete, there is a way to Trojan horse and force the gospel to the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are countries that are locking up Christians in the open streets, but they couldn\u2019t stop the films because we\u2019re tying them to <em>Star Wars<\/em> and <em>Jurassic World<\/em>. It\u2019s a fundamental opportunity for the gospel; but it would take us all, and it would take us all rallying at the box office.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay I\u2019m going to stop you there. We\u2019re out of time. But I want folks to plan on going to the movie this weekend\u2014you will not be sorry \/ you will not say, \u201cDennis and Bob sure have low\u2014their tastes are really bottom of the bucket.\u201d No, our tastes are pretty high. I\u2019m going to give you an opportunity to make a difference, where you are, because you can help do something about the theme of what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re all going to get a chance to cheer on Jon, and his brother Andy, and the team that has been at work because this weekend is the release of a brand-new film that\u2019s going to be in theaters. It\u2019s going to be in your neighborhood. We\u2019re hoping a lot of our listeners will go out this weekend and see <em>Woodlawn<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is a true story. Jon Erwin has made other movies\u2014<em>October Baby<\/em>, some of you have seen that \/ <em>Mom\u2019s Night Out<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJon, you said this is a pretty expensive movie. You\u2019re going for it on this movie; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Yes, <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is one of the more expensive independent Christian films since <em>The Passion of the Christ<\/em>. Yes, the 25 million dollars that it took is a lot of money to both make and market the film. But you know, the way I look at it\u2014it\u2019s only about a third of what <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> spent to get the attention of a generation. So we really have to ask the question now: \u201cHow much do we care? How much do we want a generation [who is] leaving the church?\u201d I believe that if the answer to that question is: \u201cWe want our generation,\u201d then we have to put the gospel on the biggest stage possible, not the smallest stage possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> We have to really reach and really dream. I believe that it\u2019s sustainable, and it can work. It could lead to one of the greatest innovations in Christian film. So <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014 true story from the 1970\u2019s \/ football film\u2014but it\u2019s also a film about the power of revival, and spiritual awakening, and racial reconciliation through Christ. It\u2019s a great opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s what I wanted to talk about it. I forget\u2014when did we talk about this? You kind of ran this by us when it was more of a concept and you really hadn\u2019t\u2014I don\u2019t think you had doubled down on it, at that point\u2014but we talked about this movie some time back. The reason I had an interest in it was because, it not only occurred in a time when I was coming spiritually-alive and a part of the Jesus movement and an awakening, but I was actually at an event that you feature in the film called Explo \u201972. We\u2019ll talk about that in a minute, but go back to the beginning\u2014just unpack what the movie is all about\u2014and what\u2019s the genesis of the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Well, the amazing thing about <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is that a dear friend and mentor, Pastor Michael Catt, said to me, over a year ago last summer\u2014he said, \u201cYou need to go make this film,\u201d to Andy and me. He said, \u201cI think America is going to be ready for this film.\u201d Those words could not have been more prophetic because <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is a story about a school in Birmingham, Alabama\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014public school in 1973 \/ my hometown\u2014that was going to close because of violence due to integration\u2014nothing could fix it. As you know, Birmingham had been kind of ripped in half during [the] Civil Rights [Movement]. So many of those emotions were so present and nothing could fix it. It was a true story\u2014it really happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne night, the entire football team, 44-48 players, committed their lives to Christ and committed to love each other in a school and a city that didn\u2019t know what that meant. It literally saved their school and shook the city of Birmingham. Led to\u2014out of that\u2014this quiet kid named Tony becoming the first African-American superstar in Birmingham\u2014recruited heavily by Bear Bryant, who is played by Academy-award winner, Jon Voight, in the film\u2014does a magnificent job. Somehow, he became a beacon of hope in a way that the city could kind of heal. It led to the largest high school football game ever played, to this day, in Alabama. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just, to me, shows the power of the gospel to deal with things we\u2019re dealing with today. I don\u2019t think hatred, prejudice, racism\u2014these are not things that you can just stop doing\u2014they are in our nature, as human beings. As a good friend, Benjamin Watson \/ plays for New Orleans, said: \u201cThis is not a skin problem. It\u2019s a sin problem.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that through the lens of a true story\u2014I love that it is a true story because it\u2019s undeniable \/ you can\u2019t argue with the truth\u2014the thing that fixed it at Woodlawn High School was Jesus Christ and the power of the gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the images in the movie that just arrested my attention\u2014you have a scene, as the school day starts, in that Woodlawn High School, where the African-American students are behind a\u2014it looks like a jail cell\u2014bars that are locked up with a chain. They were not allowed into the school but were locked up behind that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> It was a <em>dark<\/em> time. Reading Tandy Gerelds\u2019 diary\u2014the real coach\u2014which is really why we wanted to make the movie \/ it was powerful that he was a cynic\u2014he didn\u2019t want to believe what was happening on his team. Finally, it was so undeniable that <em>he<\/em> made a decision for Christ, which is powerful in the movie. The prayer that changed his life was literally, \u201cGod I don\u2019t know if You\u2019re real but I want whatever my players have.\u201d Just reading his journals\u2014it was just\u2014they had tried everything and nothing worked. They had tried separating the students \/ they tried a lot of things. He described it as a war zone. It was the gospel that fixed the problem and began to spread to the entire school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s cool because Birmingham is my hometown. I remember seeing Freedom Riders, and some other documentaries, and some things\u2014just dumbstruck\/horrified, thinking: \u201cThis happened in my city. How could this have happened in my city?\u201d because, growing up in Birmingham, I didn\u2019t feel those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say, having traveled all over the country frequently, there\u2019s just something different about Birmingham. There\u2019s healing that took place in Birmingham on this issue, and you can feel it in the city. I say that as someone that has grown up in the city. It\u2019s traceable to this event and others like it in the Jesus movement. God just did a work of healing in the city of Birmingham around a kind of a slow-burn revival in the city of Birmingham. It\u2019s fascinating to go back to a true story and to see what works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we are all asking the question, as Americans: \u201cWhat is the answer? What works?\u201d Again, this is such a great opportunity for Christians to step up. I remember talking to Mike Huckabee, who was at Explo \u201972 with you\u2014probably didn\u2019t see you there\u2014and whose life was changed there. Just talking about the Jesus movement and that great movement of God, unlike anything I\u2019ve experienced in my lifetime, and I just said, \u201cHow much did desperation have to play in what happened in this generation?\u201d He said: \u201cWe were desperate. We were desperate. Nothing was working. Nothing would make us happy. The world was a scary place.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told him\u2014I said, \u201cI feel like that desperation\u2019s returning.\u201d I think that there is a generation begging for answers. I think there is a generation confused. I think that they want Christ\u2014they just don\u2019t know it yet. Sometimes you have to take the method of the day or the mechanism of the day\u2014and I think there\u2019s no greater tool than movies and mass entertainment to reach a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Having lived in those days, there was desperation back then. I think the same bent of bewilderment, and confusion, and fear that grips the church today was evident back then. They did not know what to do. But in the midst of that, there emerged a movement of young people, who\u2014yes it was a lot of zeal, without knowledge\u2014and did they go off into extremes and push the edges?\u2014no doubt about it\u2014but Jesus Christ got proclaimed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, the gospel became the issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your movie is really a flashback to what was the last great American revival. You show it in a microcosm how that reviving work of God in one city had a transforming effect on individuals, on a group of people, on a high school\u2014ultimately, the rival team.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. All that really happened\u2014absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You [Jon] weren\u2019t alive when that happened\u2014we [Dennis and Bob] remember. My son said to me\u2014we were talking about <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014he said, \u201cSo, do you and Mom, as you look back, would you say you were converted during that revival?\u201d I thought and I said, \u201cI guess we were. We\u2019re a product of that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that we thought of it in the terms of like a great American awakening, back in the late \u201860s and the \u201870s; but from this vantage point, we can look back and say, \u201cIt was.\u201d Your movie is saying, \u201cThe problems that we\u2019re experiencing today \/ the only hope is that that happen again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Absolutely; absolutely right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want to ask you to just confirm that this is a true story\u2014one aspect of it. There was a point where the team was going to be led by a person on the field with a prayer, right before the game?\u2014is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>Before the game, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the principal is up in the stadium\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the press box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014yes; and he walks over and unplugs the sound system because he doesn\u2019t want a prayer to occur on the playing field in the stadium with all these people there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> It\u2019s a powerful moment in the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Is that true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> I would say\u2014if you talk about <em>Woodlawn<\/em> as a story\u2014of what\u2019s the typical film translation we have based on a true story, inspired by a true story and inspired by actual events \/ you get further away from the truth\u2014<em>Woodlawn <\/em>adheres strictly to the truth because what happened was so profound. The only thing that we do, in terms of to make it a movie, is liberties that involve compression because we have to tell the story in a small form\u2014and then composite characters \/ sometimes, you\u2019ve got to make two or three people and make them into one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that instance, there was a prayer at Legion Field\u201442,000 people \/ largest to ever see\u2014and the bureaucracy did not want to see it happen. There was controversy around it \/ there was debate over it\u2014and it happened. That happened over the course of a couple of weeks. We compressed that moment into one singular scene in the film, but the conflict was very real.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What happens in the movie is\u2014the principal pulls the plug on the sound system and so the guy praying can\u2019t repeat the Lord\u2019s Prayer. But I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014what happened\u2014the people in the stands\u2014they begin to recite the prayer from memory, the Lord\u2019s Prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> You know what\u2019s going to be cool when you see that in the theater is\u2014we do visual effects so the mass crowds in the film\u2014the most people we ever had was about 1,000 extras in the cold in Birmingham. Forty-two thousand people were at the game\u2014so we use these incredible artists to create these computer-generated crowds. They are unbelievable \/ they are so photo real. The problem is\u2014digital people don\u2019t talk: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2014talk\u2014like\u2014this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we thought about: \u201cHow do we get this sound of 42,000 people saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer?\u201d We also thought about: \u201cWhat are our core beliefs? So our core\u2014one of our real core beliefs is that the local church is the real hope for the world\u201d; but it would take a unified church to change the world. I <em>pray<\/em> that that happens \/ we\u2019re so divided. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought about, \u201cWhat if we asked churches, from all over the country, to record themselves, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer?\u201d so that the sound you hear in that scene of 42,000 people saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer together\u2014and you\u2019re going to hear it in surround sound\u2014is the church, all around America \/ churches from all over the country, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer together, as one. I can\u2019t tell you what a unified church <em>looks<\/em> like; but if you go see <em>Woodlawn<\/em>, you can hear what a unified church <em>sounds<\/em> like. It\u2019s going to be a really cool thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe video has had\u2014that we put out\u2014has had a quarter million hits\u2014all these uploads of people\u2014they are getting into it; and they record themselves, saying the Lord\u2019s Prayer. It\u2019s a great moment in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it does\u2014it is kind of a microcosm of what needs to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time for unity \/ it\u2019s time for boldness in the church\u2014at least, my Bible says, \u201c\u2026on this rock I\u2019ll build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Matthew 16:18].\u201d Okay\u2014a gate is not an offensive weapon\u2014nobody\u2019s going to attack you with a gate \/ nobody is going to throw a gate at you. A gate is a defensive mechanism, meaning\u2014for a gate to not be able to prevail, we have to storm it. We were built for offense \/ we\u2019re not built for defense. As Christians, we\u2019re not built for cultural defense\u2014it\u2019s not what we\u2019re designed for. We\u2019re designed for offense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time, culturally, to get bold; and it\u2019s time, culturally, to unify. I think that that\u2019s what we\u2019re built for. I don\u2019t think this defensive strategy, culturally\u2014where we kind of cower into submission\u2014is working. I think it\u2019s time to change. That\u2019s why I love that <em>Woodlawn<\/em> is\u2014again, we\u2019re really trying to go compete on a generation\u2019s turf, played by their rules, and beat them at their own game. We want to earn their attention by putting the gospel on a grand stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the coolest things we\u2019ve discovered in two years of research is that the generation leaving the church\u2014this grand problem we face \/ some people would say \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t70 percent of a spiritually-engaged teen leaves the church when they graduate high school\u2014they haven\u2019t come back yet \/ they might never come back. If you study frequent movie goers, that is this group of people buying the vast majority of movie tickets\u201440 million people buying 800 million movie tickets \/ 20 each\u2014it\u2019s almost a dead match \/ there they are. Do you know where they\u2019re going when they leave the church? Do you want to know where this new\u2014what people would call the \u201cun-reached people group\u201d in America\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying the young people, who are leaving the church, are the ones who are buying the movie tickets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. It\u2019s almost a statistical dead match. We\u2019ve done a <em>huge<\/em> study on what motivates their behavior. This little thing called FoMO motivates almost all their decisions\u2014it\u2019s the <u>F<\/u>ear <u>o<\/u>f <u>M<\/u>issing <u>O<\/u>ut. What\u2019s happened is\u2014the average teenager has about 250 friends on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, but the number of people that you can count on in the event of a life crisis has been steadily declining since the 1950s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve gotten more \u201cconnected\u201d\u2014I say that in [quotations]\u2014but we\u2019ve gotten much lonelier. In that loneliness has become this insatiable desire to belong to something and an incredible <em>fear<\/em> of missing out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the thesis is this: \u201cIf enough Christians could unify together, culturally, and make enough noise, like a Joshua strategy\u2014at the battle of Jericho they all had to yell at the same time\u2014then we could get a generation back, by sheer curiosity, not of the church, but at the movie theater. Maybe then we could drive them from the movie theater back to church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is become our vision. I feel just like, if you look at the history of Christianity, we hold the message as sacred, not the mechanism of delivery. One is absolutely unchanging\u2014God is the same today, yesterday, and forever. The other changes\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as it changes, you have to take whatever the microphone of the day is\u2014like radio, like the printing press \/ like Martin Luther\u2019s translation of the Bible\u2014all the way back to the Roman Road. The Roman Road was for military expansion for commerce. We didn\u2019t build them, but they were there\u2014we use them. To me, mass entertainment\u2014big movies, blockbusters, television shows\u2014America\u2019s largest or second-largest export\u2014this is the new Roman Road. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is the new way to get the attention of a generation. What it would take is enough Christians in America unifying, culturally at the movie theater, and making enough noise to get the attention of a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like sometime in the next 72 hours is what you have in mind?\u2014right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> I would say we are pursuing this with everything we have. [Laughter] It is all on the line with <em>Woodlawn<\/em>\u2014so I offer that as an example.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, when you say \u201cnext 72 hours,\u201d explain what you mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m talking about opening weekend for <em>Woodlawn<\/em> because that\u2019s what this is. The movie\u2019s going to be in hundreds of theaters\u2014it\u2019s a wide roll-out movie, and it launches this weekend. We\u2019ve told our listeners this before\u2014but you can no longer think, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll see it next weekend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe decision about whether a movie even shows up next weekend is based on how many people show up this weekend. The most important thing people can do\u2014first of all, to have a great movie experience \/ but also to make a statement in the culture\u2014 is to show up Friday night, Saturday, [or] Sunday\u2014say, \u201cWe\u2019re here to see <em>Woodlawn,<\/em>\u201d\u2014pay your money, and go see the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And bring a crowd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> That\u2019s the thing\u2014and that is what I\u2019m asking for\u2014sometimes, you just have to be bold and ask. People ask me, all the time, as Christians: \u201cWhy do I have to go see the movie in theaters. Why should I?\u201d The answer is simple\u2014is that, again\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me just answer the first part of it, and you can fill the rest in. The first reason is you\u2019re going to love the movie. It is entertaining, off the charts; and it is a powerful emotional movie that I promise you\u2014you will weep during it, and you will pound the table during it\u2014it has a great message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>Good to know. Thank you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It feels a little like a one- \/ two-punch because I\u2019m still talking to people, who are still processing and still reeling from <em>War Room<\/em> when it came out. It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cOkay, now go get a second injection,\u201d if you will, because these two really do\u2014there\u2019s some connection between them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> Hey, you couldn\u2019t have written this. I love Stephen and Alex [Kendrick]. It was my time on the movie, <em>Courageous<\/em>, when Alex asked me, \u201cJon what\u2019s your purpose and the purpose of your work?\u201d that really moved me from a career as an award-winning music video director with my brother to a calling which was to use my gifts for a higher purpose. So with <em>War Room<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s incredible to see that their movie is on prayer and ours is on revival and spiritual awakening because one <em>always<\/em> leads to the other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, it does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong> So, we\u2019re really excited\u2014they are perfectly \/ it\u2019s so cool to see their positioning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014synced up; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t plan this\u2014it\u2019s just unbelievable. I just really believe that\u2014everywhere I go, around to Christian leaders, this sentence keeps coming up, independently, which is that: \u201cThis is our time.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can\u2019t do anything about the past\u2014it\u2019s over \/ it\u2019s done\u2014but we can change the future if we work together, and we work together right now. It would take us all unified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that people don\u2019t understand\u2014there\u2019s these little things called \u201coutput deals\u201d in film\u2014I\u2019ll give you an example. Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> paid us several hundred thousand dollars to put <em>October Baby<\/em> in their library\u2014not because they wanted to \/ because they had to\u2014because we distribute through Samuel Goldwyn Films. I didn\u2019t have to have an ideological debate about a pro-life movie in their library. Not only did they have to take it, they had to give it the same terms \/ they had to give it the same platform. Okay; foreign distribution works the same way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we could learn to compete\u2014not with other Christian films\u2014but if we can learn to compete with <em>Jurassic World<\/em>, and <em>Star Wars<\/em>, and <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014which we can\u2014there\u2019s enough of us \/ we have enough resources. We have just not had a unified strategy, and we have not had the will; but if we could learn to compete, there is a way to Trojan horse and force the gospel to the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are countries that are locking up Christians in the open streets, but they couldn\u2019t stop the films because we\u2019re tying them to <em>Star Wars<\/em> and <em>Jurassic World<\/em>. It\u2019s a fundamental opportunity for the gospel; but it would take us all, and it would take us all rallying at the box office.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay I\u2019m going to stop you there. We\u2019re out of time. But I want folks to plan on going to the movie this weekend\u2014you will not be sorry \/ you will not say, \u201cDennis and Bob sure have low\u2014their tastes are really bottom of the bucket.\u201d No, our tastes are pretty high.
