Ministry was in-house, and our kids saw it. The kids saw the miracles in these peoples\u2019 lives and the life-change. Discipleship was happening 24 hours a day in our home. We were missional. We were praying and saying, \u201cGod, what do You want us to do with this house?\u201d\u2014everything was with an open hand, but I think that\u2019s what\u2019s so few couples do\u2014is they don\u2019t say, \u201cLord, what do You want?\u201d\u00a0 Instead, they think, \u201cWhat do we want, and how can I justify that biblically?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, September 30<sup>th<\/sup>. It\u2019s been fun to get a little dirt on this couple\u2014you know\u2014I mean, on their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, on Francis. [Laughter] Francis\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s true. I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve gotten any dirt on Lisa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve heard much on Lisa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, we don\u2019t have any more time. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome back to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you\u2019re here. Francis and Lisa Chan have written a book, <em>You and Me Forever<\/em>. It\u2019s all about marriage in light of eternity. In fact, you say something in your book, Francis\u2014I want you just to comment on here. You say that it\u2019s important to love Lisa in light of eternity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain to our listeners what you mean by that statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s the same thing that the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15. He said, \u201cIf there is no resurrection from the dead, then, I am above all men most to be pitied,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cI would live <em>completely<\/em> differently if there is no forever \/ if there is no eternity. Let\u2019s just enjoy\u2014just eat, drink, be merry. Let\u2019s just have a great little family, have a great time here on earth, and just think about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 But no\u2014because there is a forever\u2014<em>now<\/em>: \u201cHow do I love her in the greatest way?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and because you are accountable to <em>the<\/em> God who made <em>us<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, and made <em>her<\/em> for a reason!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>And He made this <em>marriage<\/em> for a reason\u2014it was <em>for<\/em> <em>Him<\/em>. Everything was created by Him and <em>for<\/em> Him. So, we\u2014I mean, this is what differentiates \/ is supposed to differentiate us from the rest of the world\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is that we\u2019re not living for this life. It\u2019s <em>not<\/em> about your best life right now. It\u2019s about: \u201cNo, I\u2019m thinking about the future. I\u2019m storing up treasure in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste your time just building up and storing up treasures on earth, where someone is going to steal it, or it\u2019s going to fall apart, and you\u2019ve got to insure it and everything else. Store up this treasure in heaven. Really believe that you are going to be rewarded a hundred times anything you sacrifice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I am thinking about Lisa\u2019s forever and her future, then, I\u2019m going to live a lot differently right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Lisa, I had the opportunity, a number of years ago, to go to a group of friends. I said, \u201cIf you were going to share a passage from the Bible about marriage with a couple just getting started\u2014and it couldn\u2019t be Ephesians 5, couldn\u2019t be 1 Peter 3, couldn\u2019t be Colossians 3\u2014kind of the big ones that we all go to\u2014couldn\u2019t go there \/ what passage would you share with them?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd two guys that I asked the question to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014independently, gave me the same verse. It was one that really surprised me. It was out of Psalm 34. They said, \u201cI used this verse to propose to my wife.\u201d It was the verse that says, \u201cO, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.\u201d They said: \u201cWe wanted to start our marriage, saying, \u2018This is what we\u2019re getting married to do\u2014to magnify the Lord together and exalt His name together.\u2019\u00a0 That\u2019s the <em>mission<\/em>. That\u2019s the purpose statement for our marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t smart enough, when I got married, to have that at the center of what I was all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes; you know, it\u2019s interesting because I just spoke, last week, for a group with young moms. I was reminding them: \u201cYou are more than a mother. You are more than a wife. You are a child of God. You are here for Him.\u201d\u00a0 And I know we are talking about marriage right now; but I was trying to get them to think outside of\u2014even just in their everyday life: \u201cYou belong to God. You are here\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like it says in Ephesians 2:10, I think it is\u2014\u201cYou are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works that He prepared in advance\u2026\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, afterward, one of the moms comes up and just says: \u201cYou know, my husband and I\u2014we both work fulltime. We are kind of stuck. We have these jobs, and this house, and these cars. We want to serve the Lord, but\u2026\u201d\u2014<em>but<\/em>. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were just talking about how we need to back things up and get people like that, who think beforehand, who\u2014young people who will say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Our marriage is going to be about a mission. Our marriage is going to be about the fact that we are here <em>for<\/em> God. So, we are going to make different choices. We are going to set our life up in a way that gives us total <em>freedom<\/em> to do whatever God asks of us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is a message I <em>long<\/em> to get out to people who haven\u2019t done it yet\u2014who aren\u2019t <em>stuck<\/em> right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are a lot of couples who are <em>trapped<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are <em>ensnared<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. And there is nothing worse than <em>not<\/em> being able to do the Lord\u2014\u201cI will do anything or go anywhere for You.\u201d\u00a0 That should be true of each of us\u2014scary as it is. I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s <em>not<\/em>. I\u2019m fearful sometimes of what the Lord will ask me to do; but I\u2019m <em>more<\/em> afraid of not being able to do what He asks me to do. Who are we here for?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Lisa, as you and Francis started your marriage, 21 years ago; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How much on mission were you, at that point?\u00a0 Did your marriage start with this agreement that you were going to be a part of the Great Commission \/ being a part of proclaiming Jesus Christ to a lost world?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. I think because it was almost unintentional in some ways. I don\u2019t think I personally was thinking about discipleship and really putting my mindset, intentionally, on, \u201cHow many women am I going to disciple and bring to the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 It was more\u2014we jumped onto this mission that God had given us in starting the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thank God for that because I think, in a way, for me, it inadvertently put me on a mission. Our marriage started out that way\u2014and then, this growing sense of: \u201cWhat we are here for, and why we are here\u201d and the joy that came from, all of a sudden, we are pouring our lives out for these other people\u2014loving them\/discipling them. We were put in a position of leadership, and we needed to lead. So, it was so good for me\u2014I\u2019m so grateful for it\u2014but the <em>intentional<\/em> mindset grew. It wasn\u2019t so much for me there, right in the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Francis, what about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Because of my upbringing, and because my parents and everyone died at such a young age, I had more of an eternal focus. I just woke up, thinking: \u201cOkay, this could be my last day. What am I going to do?\u00a0 Let me do whatever the Lord wants me to do today.\u201d It was my focus, and I was trying to bring Lisa, who had had a different upbringing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and again, no fault to her \/ no fault to her parents. That\u2019s the typical American church teaching\u2014is: \u201cThis is all about you. Let us cater to <em>your<\/em> needs. What kind of programs do you want in the church?\u00a0 It\u2019s all about you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s just\u2014it was trying to get us deeply into the Scriptures and say: \u201cNow, what is this about?\u00a0 Why are we still alive?\u00a0 Why am I breathing right now?\u00a0 Someone is letting me breathe right now, and I\u2019m breathing for <em>Him<\/em>. I want to do everything for His glory.\u201d\u00a0 So, I did have some of that intensity in me from the onset, I think, from a young age because of what God let me experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s one thing for two people, who have that passion, individually, to get married. The blending of that together and making it \u201cour passion together, as a couple,\u201d as opposed to \u201cmy passion,\u201d and \u201cyour passion,\u201d and we share a supper table and a bed. How have you <em>merged<\/em> mission together in marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I grew up\u2014I wanted to be a singer\u2014I sang in our church \/ I did some studio recordings. When we first\u2014we\u2019d been married a few months \/ I was approached with this production deal; right?\u00a0 These guys were going to record me\/produce me\u2014put me out there. I say that because my mission\u2014if you want to call it that \/ or my <em>dream<\/em> was: \u201cI\u2019m going to be a recording artist. I\u2019m going to sing, and get to travel, and do this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, was my husband, whom God had called to start a church. I felt the Lord very gently saying: \u201cYou need to lay that down because I can\u2019t have you going in two separate directions. It makes no sense. Be on mission together. Don\u2019t have two separate things that you\u2019re doing\u2014that\u2019s going to pull you apart.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about, for a moment, just a person, who\u2019s slugging out life, as a couple. They are going, \u201cYou guys are talking about mission.\u201d\u00a0 How can they get started, Francis, to begin to share\u2014and that\u2019s what I want them to catch\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they\u2019d be infected with a love for Christ, but also, being locked arm \/ locked step together, as a couple, defined around that purpose of the Great Commission?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And can they be on mission together if they are living in the suburbs and they\u2019ve got two kids and\u2014you know, kind of the ordinary life\u2014or does being on mission mean: \u201cNo, you\u2019ve got to abandon it all. Move somewhere else and live somewhere else in some other way\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014no. I mean, because we live in the city; and we did live in the suburbs. I believe we were missional, but we\u2014the idea is surrendering everything, like we\u2019ve talked about\u2014to say, \u201cGod, this is Your house.\u201d\u00a0 Where do we see in Scripture that you are allowed to not show hospitality and say: \u201cNo, this is my home. No one else is allowed in it\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, but that\u2019s the mindset I had when we first got married, though, because I remember her even discipling a gal after 5 o\u2019clock. I was like, \u201cDon\u2019t ever have her in our house after five,\u201d because I believed in that whole lie\u2014that this home is protected, and we need our own time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cMy castle\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Exactly!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>And then, you start reading Scripture and go, \u201cWhere in the world would you get that?\u201d And we started letting people in the home and letting people actually live with us. Ministry was in-house, and our kids saw it. The kids saw the miracles in these peoples\u2019 lives and the life-change. Discipleship was happening 24 hours a day in our home. I mean, we were missional. We were praying and saying: \u201cGod, what do You want us to do with this house?\u00a0 Do You want us to move into a bigger house so we can take more people in?\u00a0 Do You want us to sell the house, move into a smaller one, and give the money away?\u201d\u2014like everything is with an open hand, but I think that\u2019s what so few couples <em>do<\/em>\u2014is they don\u2019t say, \u201cLord, what do You want?\u201d\u00a0 Instead they think, \u201cWhat do we want, and how can I justify that biblically?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the starting place for being on mission is to say: \u201cIt\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s about Him. It\u2019s\u2014\u2018What do You want?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut a lot of couples will say, \u201cWell, but I don\u2019t know what He wants because I prayed and said, \u2018Lord, whatever You want?\u2019 and I haven\u2019t heard anything yet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Well, I would say, \u201cOpen the Book\u201d\u2014not our book; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, open that one too. In the Scriptures, there are so many things\u2014this is where we are so messed up, as a church, here in America, being hearers of the Word and doing nothing\u2014we\u2019re waiting for this voice from the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, true religion is to care for the widows and orphans in their distress. Go adopt a kid. Why don\u2019t you just <em>assume<\/em> adoption unless the Lord screams from heaven: \u201cNo, stop! Don\u2019t do it!\u201d\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t we assume\u2014if this is true religion\u2014then, everyone should adopt? I mean, I\u2019m saying, \u201cWhy do we always defer to inaction?\u201d\u00a0 We just assume, \u201cI\u2019ll do nothing until I hear a voice from heaven.\u201d\u00a0 No, just open the Bible. <em>Obey<\/em> a verse\u2014actually, do it. If there is a voice from heaven telling you: \u201cNo. No matter what you do, don\u2019t help that widow,\u201d\u2014then, stop\u2014but we do this opposite. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there are a lot of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is no voice from heaven, going to say, \u201cDon\u2019t help that widow\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. What I want our listeners to hear\u2014there are a lot of ways to go near the orphan. You can go to the foster care system. They are in desperate need of foster care families. And frankly, the church of Jesus Christ ought to be emptying out the foster care system of children in state after state around our country. I mean, you don\u2019t have to adopt\u2014you can just provide a family. For some of these kids, it may be the only family in their lifetimes\u2014they ever see what real love is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, that makes absolutely no sense to me that there are half a million foster kids that no one wants. How many <em>millions<\/em> of churches are there?\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s like we\u2019ve got over a million churches, and we have half a million foster kids. That makes zero sense. So, if every other church adopted one, we\u2019d take care of it; but that\u2019s how pathetic it is right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>The most paralyzing thing, I think, for us, as believers, is <em>fear<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re so afraid of what might happen: \u201cWell, what about my kids?\u00a0 What if I bring someone in \/ something happens to them?\u201d\u00a0 And I just want to encourage people that I\u2019m just as afraid as you. In fact, I told God: \u201cI do not want a teenage foster child. I believe that what\u2019s best for us, in our family, is to take someone that\u2019s younger.\u201d\u00a0 What does the Lord bring to us last summer but a teenage foster child?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has been the most amazing blessing. And if I talk about it too long, I\u2019ll end up crying on the air; but just\u2014you know, we cringe to think of saying, \u201cNo,\u201d to that and what would have happened\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014in her life. [Emotion in voice] But I\u2019m telling you, honestly, on the front side, I did <em>not<\/em> want to do that. But there is so much blessing in taking a step of faith. So, take a step of faith\u2014maybe, even if it is not as grand as taking in a foster child. But do something that takes some faith. Go knock on your neighbor\u2019s door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBring them dinner and to say: \u201cI want to show some love to you. Do you need help?\u00a0 Can I help mow your lawn?\u201d\u00a0 Do some step of faith\u2014take some action. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You just mentioned something there\u2014and I appreciate, so much, your passion and tender heart about this because Barbara and I share that. We have gone near the needs of orphans <em>repeatedly<\/em>. When you go near the orphan, you find the heart of God; and it\u2019s a good thing because we are orphans too. Apart from the gospel\u2014God adopting us into His family\u2014we\u2019re spiritual orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question for both of you\u2014Lisa and Francis. I like to ask people: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d Courage is not battlefield courage, necessarily\u2014it\u2019s doing your duty in the face of fear. It\u2019s the very thing you were talking about. So, what would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done, Lisa?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>The most courageous thing you can do is say, \u201cYes,\u201d to something God is asking you to do that you are afraid of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere have been <em>so<\/em> <em>many<\/em> times\u2014I scramble to think of which one to share. I think about the time when we invited a man, who had been in prison for six years, and his family of three kids\u2014his wife and three kids\u2014to move in with us\u2014to give them our master bedroom, to move upstairs with our kids, and share that bathroom with all of them. That took a little bit of courage, and it took dying to ourselves. It took saying, \u201cYou can have my bedroom and my bathroom,\u201d\u2014which was, in one sense, so stupid and dumb but felt <em>hard<\/em>\u2014and letting go of fear \/ letting go of fear\u2014that\u2019s the most courageous thing to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you are a scaredy-cat, like me, you have to preach the truth to yourself. You have to preach verses like 2 Timothy 1:7: \u201cFor God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to say the truth of God\u2019s Word to myself, <em>all<\/em> <em>the<\/em> <em>time<\/em>, because I will limit myself. I will refuse to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to God and will be consumed with anxiety and fear in all these situations. But\u2014no, that is not from God. He gave us, not a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control. So, <em>choose<\/em> to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to God and to love someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Alright, Francis, what is your most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>You know it\u2019s funny. A lot of those things that scare me a little bit\u2014but I\u2019m not really that afraid of dying, or this, or that. You\u2019ll probably be surprised by this; but probably, the most courageous moments are when I\u2019m sitting on a plane with a stranger or talking to a neighbor and I lay out the gospel, one on one, with them. That terrifies me. That may just sound dumb to some people, but that\u2019s the <em>hardest<\/em> thing for me\u2014to be rejected and to just throw\u2014I can stand in front of 100,000 people in a stadium\u2014no big deal! You put me, one on one, with someone that I know is not used to hearing about Jesus, and I\u2019m going to lay it out for them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it still scares me to this day. It still takes courage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you know how many people just went, \u201cOh, it\u2019s so good to hear him say that\u201d? [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I want to say to you: \u201cYou\u2019re in good company.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We just recently asked a guy that same question\u2014not just any guy\u2014but a NASA astronaut, who was on the International Space Station. I asked him\u2014he\u2019s been to outer space twice. So, he\u2019s strapped a rocket\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014on and gone into outer space. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He floated out in nothing with the space suit and the tentacles on him; you know?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes\u2014so, you with me?\u00a0 I asked him the same question. It\u2019s like <em>you<\/em>\u2014he\u2019s going, \u201cSharing my faith in Jesus Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cis repeatedly the most courageous thing I ever do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Totally. And it\u2019s interesting\u2014when I was younger, we didn\u2019t care for the poor. We didn\u2019t think about human trafficking\u2014this or that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we started doing that, that was a big deal; but now, that\u2019s not really a scary thing to do\u2014that\u2019s very accepted. You\u2019re a hero if you do this; but if you start sharing the gospel, you\u2019re going to get shutdown. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially today; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Amen!\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2014times are changing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I just want to applaud you two and your book because I think you properly paint marriage with its noble, transcendent, God-imbued purpose\u2014that we\u2019re made in His image, designed to reproduce a godly legacy, preach the gospel to the next generation, and glorify Him in all that we say and do. [Laughter] Francis\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s true. I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve gotten any dirt on Lisa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve heard much on Lisa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, we don\u2019t have any more time. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome back to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you\u2019re here. Francis and Lisa Chan have written a book, <em>You and Me Forever<\/em>. It\u2019s all about marriage in light of eternity. In fact, you say something in your book, Francis\u2014I want you just to comment on here. You say that it\u2019s important to love Lisa in light of eternity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain to our listeners what you mean by that statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s the same thing that the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15. He said, \u201cIf there is no resurrection from the dead, then, I am above all men most to be pitied,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cI would live <em>completely<\/em> differently if there is no forever \/ if there is no eternity. Let\u2019s just enjoy\u2014just eat, drink, be merry. Let\u2019s just have a great little family, have a great time here on earth, and just think about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 But no\u2014because there is a forever\u2014<em>now<\/em>: \u201cHow do I love her in the greatest way?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and because you are accountable to <em>the<\/em> God who made <em>us<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, and made <em>her<\/em> for a reason!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>And He made this <em>marriage<\/em> for a reason\u2014it was <em>for<\/em> <em>Him<\/em>. Everything was created by Him and <em>for<\/em> Him. So, we\u2014I mean, this is what differentiates \/ is supposed to differentiate us from the rest of the world\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is that we\u2019re not living for this life. It\u2019s <em>not<\/em> about your best life right now. It\u2019s about: \u201cNo, I\u2019m thinking about the future. I\u2019m storing up treasure in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste your time just building up and storing up treasures on earth, where someone is going to steal it, or it\u2019s going to fall apart, and you\u2019ve got to insure it and everything else. Store up this treasure in heaven. Really believe that you are going to be rewarded a hundred times anything you sacrifice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I am thinking about Lisa\u2019s forever and her future, then, I\u2019m going to live a lot differently right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Lisa, I had the opportunity, a number of years ago, to go to a group of friends. I said, \u201cIf you were going to share a passage from the Bible about marriage with a couple just getting started\u2014and it couldn\u2019t be Ephesians 5, couldn\u2019t be 1 Peter 3, couldn\u2019t be Colossians 3\u2014kind of the big ones that we all go to\u2014couldn\u2019t go there \/ what passage would you share with them?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd two guys that I asked the question to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014independently, gave me the same verse. It was one that really surprised me. It was out of Psalm 34. They said, \u201cI used this verse to propose to my wife.\u201d It was the verse that says, \u201cO, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.\u201d They said: \u201cWe wanted to start our marriage, saying, \u2018This is what we\u2019re getting married to do\u2014to magnify the Lord together and exalt His name together.\u2019\u00a0 That\u2019s the <em>mission<\/em>. That\u2019s the purpose statement for our marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t smart enough, when I got married, to have that at the center of what I was all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes; you know, it\u2019s interesting because I just spoke, last week, for a group with young moms. I was reminding them: \u201cYou are more than a mother. You are more than a wife. You are a child of God. You are here for Him.\u201d\u00a0 And I know we are talking about marriage right now; but I was trying to get them to think outside of\u2014even just in their everyday life: \u201cYou belong to God. You are here\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like it says in Ephesians 2:10, I think it is\u2014\u201cYou are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works that He prepared in advance\u2026\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, afterward, one of the moms comes up and just says: \u201cYou know, my husband and I\u2014we both work fulltime. We are kind of stuck. We have these jobs, and this house, and these cars. We want to serve the Lord, but\u2026\u201d\u2014<em>but<\/em>. I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were just talking about how we need to back things up and get people like that, who think beforehand, who\u2014young people who will say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Our marriage is going to be about a mission. Our marriage is going to be about the fact that we are here <em>for<\/em> God. So, we are going to make different choices. We are going to set our life up in a way that gives us total <em>freedom<\/em> to do whatever God asks of us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is a message I <em>long<\/em> to get out to people who haven\u2019t done it yet\u2014who aren\u2019t <em>stuck<\/em> right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are a lot of couples who are <em>trapped<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are <em>ensnared<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. And there is nothing worse than <em>not<\/em> being able to do the Lord\u2014\u201cI will do anything or go anywhere for You.\u201d\u00a0 That should be true of each of us\u2014scary as it is. I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s <em>not<\/em>. I\u2019m fearful sometimes of what the Lord will ask me to do; but I\u2019m <em>more<\/em> afraid of not being able to do what He asks me to do. Who are we here for?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Lisa, as you and Francis started your marriage, 21 years ago; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How much on mission were you, at that point?\u00a0 Did your marriage start with this agreement that you were going to be a part of the Great Commission \/ being a part of proclaiming Jesus Christ to a lost world?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. I think because it was almost unintentional in some ways. I don\u2019t think I personally was thinking about discipleship and really putting my mindset, intentionally, on, \u201cHow many women am I going to disciple and bring to the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 It was more\u2014we jumped onto this mission that God had given us in starting the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thank God for that because I think, in a way, for me, it inadvertently put me on a mission. Our marriage started out that way\u2014and then, this growing sense of: \u201cWhat we are here for, and why we are here\u201d and the joy that came from, all of a sudden, we are pouring our lives out for these other people\u2014loving them\/discipling them. We were put in a position of leadership, and we needed to lead. So, it was so good for me\u2014I\u2019m so grateful for it\u2014but the <em>intentional<\/em> mindset grew. It wasn\u2019t so much for me there, right in the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Francis, what about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Because of my upbringing, and because my parents and everyone died at such a young age, I had more of an eternal focus. I just woke up, thinking: \u201cOkay, this could be my last day. What am I going to do?\u00a0 Let me do whatever the Lord wants me to do today.\u201d It was my focus, and I was trying to bring Lisa, who had had a different upbringing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and again, no fault to her \/ no fault to her parents. That\u2019s the typical American church teaching\u2014is: \u201cThis is all about you. Let us cater to <em>your<\/em> needs. What kind of programs do you want in the church?\u00a0 It\u2019s all about you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s just\u2014it was trying to get us deeply into the Scriptures and say: \u201cNow, what is this about?\u00a0 Why are we still alive?\u00a0 Why am I breathing right now?\u00a0 Someone is letting me breathe right now, and I\u2019m breathing for <em>Him<\/em>. I want to do everything for His glory.\u201d\u00a0 So, I did have some of that intensity in me from the onset, I think, from a young age because of what God let me experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s one thing for two people, who have that passion, individually, to get married. The blending of that together and making it \u201cour passion together, as a couple,\u201d as opposed to \u201cmy passion,\u201d and \u201cyour passion,\u201d and we share a supper table and a bed. How have you <em>merged<\/em> mission together in marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I grew up\u2014I wanted to be a singer\u2014I sang in our church \/ I did some studio recordings. When we first\u2014we\u2019d been married a few months \/ I was approached with this production deal; right?\u00a0 These guys were going to record me\/produce me\u2014put me out there. I say that because my mission\u2014if you want to call it that \/ or my <em>dream<\/em> was: \u201cI\u2019m going to be a recording artist. I\u2019m going to sing, and get to travel, and do this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, was my husband, whom God had called to start a church. I felt the Lord very gently saying: \u201cYou need to lay that down because I can\u2019t have you going in two separate directions. It makes no sense. Be on mission together. Don\u2019t have two separate things that you\u2019re doing\u2014that\u2019s going to pull you apart.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about, for a moment, just a person, who\u2019s slugging out life, as a couple. They are going, \u201cYou guys are talking about mission.\u201d\u00a0 How can they get started, Francis, to begin to share\u2014and that\u2019s what I want them to catch\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they\u2019d be infected with a love for Christ, but also, being locked arm \/ locked step together, as a couple, defined around that purpose of the Great Commission?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And can they be on mission together if they are living in the suburbs and they\u2019ve got two kids and\u2014you know, kind of the ordinary life\u2014or does being on mission mean: \u201cNo, you\u2019ve got to abandon it all. Move somewhere else and live somewhere else in some other way\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014no. I mean, because we live in the city; and we did live in the suburbs. I believe we were missional, but we\u2014the idea is surrendering everything, like we\u2019ve talked about\u2014to say, \u201cGod, this is Your house.\u201d\u00a0 Where do we see in Scripture that you are allowed to not show hospitality and say: \u201cNo, this is my home. No one else is allowed in it\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, but that\u2019s the mindset I had when we first got married, though, because I remember her even discipling a gal after 5 o\u2019clock. I was like, \u201cDon\u2019t ever have her in our house after five,\u201d because I believed in that whole lie\u2014that this home is protected, and we need our own time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cMy castle\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Exactly!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>And then, you start reading Scripture and go, \u201cWhere in the world would you get that?\u201d And we started letting people in the home and letting people actually live with us. We were praying and saying: \u201cGod, what do You want us to do with this house?\u00a0 Do You want us to move into a bigger house so we can take more people in?\u00a0 Do You want us to sell the house, move into a smaller one, and give the money away?\u201d\u2014like everything is with an open hand, but I think that\u2019s what so few couples <em>do<\/em>\u2014is they don\u2019t say, \u201cLord, what do You want?\u201d\u00a0 Instead they think, \u201cWhat do we want, and how can I justify that biblically?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the starting place for being on mission is to say: \u201cIt\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s about Him. It\u2019s\u2014\u2018What do You want?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut a lot of couples will say, \u201cWell, but I don\u2019t know what He wants because I prayed and said, \u2018Lord, whatever You want?\u2019 and I haven\u2019t heard anything yet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Well, I would say, \u201cOpen the Book\u201d\u2014not our book; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, open that one too. In the Scriptures, there are so many things\u2014this is where we are so messed up, as a church, here in America, being hearers of the Word and doing nothing\u2014we\u2019re waiting for this voice from the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, true religion is to care for the widows and orphans in their distress. Go adopt a kid. Why don\u2019t you just <em>assume<\/em> adoption unless the Lord screams from heaven: \u201cNo, stop! Don\u2019t do it!\u201d\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t we assume\u2014if this is true religion\u2014then, everyone should adopt? I mean, I\u2019m saying, \u201cWhy do we always defer to inaction?\u201d\u00a0 We just assume, \u201cI\u2019ll do nothing until I hear a voice from heaven.\u201d\u00a0 No, just open the Bible. <em>Obey<\/em> a verse\u2014actually, do it. If there is a voice from heaven telling you: \u201cNo. No matter what you do, don\u2019t help that widow,\u201d\u2014then, stop\u2014but we do this opposite. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there are a lot of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is no voice from heaven, going to say, \u201cDon\u2019t help that widow\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. What I want our listeners to hear\u2014there are a lot of ways to go near the orphan. You can go to the foster care system. They are in desperate need of foster care families. And frankly, the church of Jesus Christ ought to be emptying out the foster care system of children in state after state around our country. I mean, you don\u2019t have to adopt\u2014you can just provide a family. For some of these kids, it may be the only family in their lifetimes\u2014they ever see what real love is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes, that makes absolutely no sense to me that there are half a million foster kids that no one wants. How many <em>millions<\/em> of churches are there?\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s like we\u2019ve got over a million churches, and we have half a million foster kids. That makes zero sense. So, if every other church adopted one, we\u2019d take care of it; but that\u2019s how pathetic it is right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>The most paralyzing thing, I think, for us, as believers, is <em>fear<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re so afraid of what might happen: \u201cWell, what about my kids?\u00a0 What if I bring someone in \/ something happens to them?\u201d\u00a0 And I just want to encourage people that I\u2019m just as afraid as you. In fact, I told God: \u201cI do not want a teenage foster child. I believe that what\u2019s best for us, in our family, is to take someone that\u2019s younger.\u201d\u00a0 What does the Lord bring to us last summer but a teenage foster child?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has been the most amazing blessing. And if I talk about it too long, I\u2019ll end up crying on the air; but just\u2014you know, we cringe to think of saying, \u201cNo,\u201d to that and what would have happened\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014in her life. [Emotion in voice] But I\u2019m telling you, honestly, on the front side, I did <em>not<\/em> want to do that. But there is so much blessing in taking a step of faith. So, take a step of faith\u2014maybe, even if it is not as grand as taking in a foster child. But do something that takes some faith. Go knock on your neighbor\u2019s door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBring them dinner and to say: \u201cI want to show some love to you. Do you need help?\u00a0 Can I help mow your lawn?\u201d\u00a0 Do some step of faith\u2014take some action. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You just mentioned something there\u2014and I appreciate, so much, your passion and tender heart about this because Barbara and I share that. We have gone near the needs of orphans <em>repeatedly<\/em>. When you go near the orphan, you find the heart of God; and it\u2019s a good thing because we are orphans too. Apart from the gospel\u2014God adopting us into His family\u2014we\u2019re spiritual orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question for both of you\u2014Lisa and Francis. I like to ask people: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d Courage is not battlefield courage, necessarily\u2014it\u2019s doing your duty in the face of fear. It\u2019s the very thing you were talking about. So, what would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done, Lisa?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>The most courageous thing you can do is say, \u201cYes,\u201d to something God is asking you to do that you are afraid of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere have been <em>so<\/em> <em>many<\/em> times\u2014I scramble to think of which one to share. I think about the time when we invited a man, who had been in prison for six years, and his family of three kids\u2014his wife and three kids\u2014to move in with us\u2014to give them our master bedroom, to move upstairs with our kids, and share that bathroom with all of them. That took a little bit of courage, and it took dying to ourselves. It took saying, \u201cYou can have my bedroom and my bathroom,\u201d\u2014which was, in one sense, so stupid and dumb but felt <em>hard<\/em>\u2014and letting go of fear \/ letting go of fear\u2014that\u2019s the most courageous thing to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you are a scaredy-cat, like me, you have to preach the truth to yourself. You have to preach verses like 2 Timothy 1:7: \u201cFor God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to say the truth of God\u2019s Word to myself, <em>all<\/em> <em>the<\/em> <em>time<\/em>, because I will limit myself. I will refuse to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to God and will be consumed with anxiety and fear in all these situations. But\u2014no, that is not from God. He gave us, not a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control. So, <em>choose<\/em> to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to God and to love someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Alright, Francis, what is your most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>You know it\u2019s funny. A lot of those things that scare me a little bit\u2014but I\u2019m not really that afraid of dying, or this, or that. You\u2019ll probably be surprised by this; but probably, the most courageous moments are when I\u2019m sitting on a plane with a stranger or talking to a neighbor and I lay out the gospel, one on one, with them. That terrifies me. That may just sound dumb to some people, but that\u2019s the <em>hardest<\/em> thing for me\u2014to be rejected and to just throw\u2014I can stand in front of 100,000 people in a stadium\u2014no big deal! You put me, one on one, with someone that I know is not used to hearing about Jesus, and I\u2019m going to lay it out for them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it still scares me to this day. It still takes courage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you know how many people just went, \u201cOh, it\u2019s so good to hear him say that\u201d? [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I want to say to you: \u201cYou\u2019re in good company.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We just recently asked a guy that same question\u2014not just any guy\u2014but a NASA astronaut, who was on the International Space Station. I asked him\u2014he\u2019s been to outer space twice. So, he\u2019s strapped a rocket\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014on and gone into outer space. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He floated out in nothing with the space suit and the tentacles on him; you know?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes\u2014so, you with me?\u00a0 I asked him the same question. It\u2019s like <em>you<\/em>\u2014he\u2019s going, \u201cSharing my faith in Jesus Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cis repeatedly the most courageous thing I ever do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Totally. And it\u2019s interesting\u2014when I was younger, we didn\u2019t care for the poor. We didn\u2019t think about human trafficking\u2014this or that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we started doing that, that was a big deal; but now, that\u2019s not really a scary thing to do\u2014that\u2019s very accepted. You\u2019re a hero if you do this; but if you start sharing the gospel, you\u2019re going to get shutdown. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially today; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Francis: <\/strong>Amen!\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2014times are changing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I just want to applaud you two and your book because I think you properly paint marriage with its noble, transcendent, God-imbued purpose\u2014that we\u2019re made in His image, designed to reproduce a godly legacy, preach the gospel to the next generation, and glorify Him in all that we say and do.
