We\u2019re talking a lot about prayer this week\u2014and in fact, for the last couple of weeks, as we\u2019re encouraging listeners to start praying together every day in your marriage. In fact, we\u2019re not just encouraging it\u2014but we\u2019re helping to make it happen\u2014by sending our listeners a daily prayer prompt, either as an email or as a text message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt will give you coaching tips on how you can pray together each day. Great to be with you guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sam has been married to his wife Vicki for 39 years. They have three children. He is a graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary. He\u2019s a church-planter with e3 Partners Ministry. Some of you are aware of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I am Second<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am Second\u2014yes; the other ministry they have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re connected with that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. I am Second is sort of a subset ministry of e3 Partners\u2014although, they\u2019re very much integrated. God\u2019s doing some great things. It\u2019s a web-based ministry that has films of personal testimonies for Jesus Christ. It\u2019s basically the stories of how people got their lives wrecked up, one way or another, and how Jesus Christ restored them and rescued them\u2014relevant, powerful issues of life\u2014testimony after testimony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you were telling me that the one with Brian Welch has been the most-viewed one. He was with the band, Korn\u2014a heavy metal band. I\u2019ve watched that online\u2014it\u2019s a compelling story. But\u2014the Duck Guys\u2014you just did one with them; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, we got an opportunity to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob. It\u2019s not the Duck Guys. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody knows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s <em>Duck Dynasty<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody knows who I\u2019m talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give some dignity to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Duck Boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong><em>Duck Dynasty<\/em> guys\u2014yes, we got an opportunity to film the testimony of\u2014it\u2019s actually kind of a three-part or four-part film. It interviews Phil, Miss Kay, Jep, and Reed. They tell their story. It\u2019s just an amazing\u2014you need to see the film on iamsecond.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You guys have got to figure, at this point, that if the person has a long beard\u2014it\u2019ll be a compelling video! [Laughter] That\u2019s all it needs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s talk about your book here and praying with your spouse. You hit a snag in your marriage, where your wife looked you in the eyes and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve failed me, spiritually.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re a Dallas guy\u2014you graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary. You were trained in the Scriptures; and yet, you weren\u2019t praying with your wife!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d pastored churches, you were taking people on missions trips, and you were teaching them how to evangelize. Prayer together, as a couple, was an irregular thing for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s kind of\u2014kind of crazy, almost; isn\u2019t it? We\u2019re so busy\u2014running in life and ministry\u2014and taking care of everybody else and doing everything else\u2014in ministry. I\u2019m telling you\u2014I\u2019ve talked to spiritual leaders, by the droves, in this messaging. The consistent testimony is that: \u201cWe\u2019re dropping that ball.\u201d I mean, even among spiritual leaders\u2014and you know what?\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly where the enemy wants us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s where all the harm begins to go\u2014distancing in the marriage\u2014the wife desires spiritually connectivity \/ the guy desires physical intimacy\u2014but he\u2019s denying his wife emotional and spiritual intimacy. We expect her to show up for us, physically \/ he\u2019s not showing up, emotionally and spiritually. It creates a lot of confusion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you just explained to me why guys come back to me\u2014after I\u2019ve given them the challenge to pray with their wives\u2014a couple of years later, they\u2019ll come back; and they\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know what? You\u2019re right. I can\u2019t believe how this changed our marriage.\u201d The reality is\u2014praying with his wife changed him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He became a different man because of that accountability\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and because he had to deal with his shame.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Exactly\u2014and think of the very issues that I\u2019m struggling with in my life\u2014those sore points\u2014those sins and struggles and mistakes and failures. You know what? It just very well may be, if I can get to the Word of God with my wife, in a prayerful union, God might just have some spiritual answers there for me. The very healing is in the place we opt out from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>So, guys have put themselves in this penalty box. They\u2019re just boxed up, and they\u2019re not coming out. I say to guys: \u201cI have an idea. Why don\u2019t you just stay in the penalty box until you <em>feel<\/em> like you\u2019re good enough? I mean, when\u2019s that going to happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, we need to step toward our wives, in faith\u2014come into the light \/ let the Word of God do its work\u2014just step slow \/ just step simple\u2014your wife will welcome you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Some baby steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Baby steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Where does a guy begin, though? First of all, explain expository prayer. Now, that sounds like a lofty term; but it\u2019s basically praying through the Scriptures; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>It\u2019s Scripture praying. It\u2019s simply this\u2014my wife and I read a few verses together. We commit to praying through a book. Right now, we\u2019re praying through the Gospel of Mark. It\u2019s not a race. We go very slow\u2014read a few verses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Like how many?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Oh, my, sometimes, three verses\u2014two verses. There have been times where it\u2019s been one verse\u2014truly, one verse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Until something hits you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>\u2014just something sort of strikes me. Usually, I sort of decide how many verses we read\u2014but just a few verses. We read it. We sit quiet\u2014listen for the Lord to speak to our hearts. I like to listen to my wife first: \u201cHoney, what jumps out at\u2014what do you see here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just identify some ideas from the text\u2014some key words, some topics, some ideas, some blessing, some praises\u2014whatever we see. We use those as what I call prayer points\u2014we pray those things. We share in a prayer time and pray the guided Word of God over our marriage and over our kids. That\u2019s basically it\u2014expository praying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis mentioned that he and Barbara pray together at bedtime. What has been the pattern for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Vicki and I\u2014what works for us\u2014we\u2019re empty-nesters. So, morning works for us pretty good; but a lot of times, a guy\u2019s said to me, \u201cWhen are we going to do this?\u201d I basically say: \u201cLook. I don\u2019t know your business, your marriage, or how things work;\u201d\u2014 but, basically, what I say is\u2014\u201cYou solve hard problems at work. Solve this problem at home, Sir!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>I say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Serve your wife. If she\u2019s a morning person and you\u2019re a night owl, get up. You know, if it\u2019s vice versa, you bend over more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to serve her need, to meet her, step toward her to initiate, and meet her where she\u2019s at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Because you\u2019re her husband, your prayers with her\u2014regardless of how simple you may feel they are\u2014they\u2019re more vital and they\u2019re more effective than anybody else who prays with her because you are her one-flesh partner in life. That\u2019s what Genesis tells us about one flesh in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There were some key passages\u2014you mentioned Genesis. There were some key verses that kind of jumped out at you, from the Scriptures, once God started to stir on this in your heart; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And before he comments on that\u2014for the guy who\u2019s listening, who wants to know how to get started\u2014what Sam is about to give you is a cheat sheet. These are three passages of Scripture he\u2019s going to share with you, where you could begin this process of praying together with your wife. We\u2019re going to make them available on our website.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, these verses are, in a sense, really more the backbone of why it is that God\u2019s calling us into this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first one\u2019s in Genesis, Chapter 2, verse 24: \u201cFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat hit me here was the power of the concept of one-flesh. You know, in a Christian marriage, we have God, husband, and wife. It\u2019s like a triangle\u2014one, plus one, plus one, equals one Christian marriage. That\u2019s transparency, and intimacy, and oneness\u2014the unique oneness of marriage that God has designed for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if we will pray the Word of God, with our wife, you\u2019re literally putting the Word of God in the middle of that triangle to create great power and guided prayers in the will of God. The one-flesh power is something that really struck me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You, and your wife, and God sitting down, every day, to have a conversation together\u2014about life, about what\u2019s important, about what God has already said in His Word\u2014that should strengthen that triangle; shouldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, it certainly would. I want to correct one thing\u2014it\u2019s not daily. It\u2019s still not daily for us. That would be ideal; but I\u2019ll tell you\u2014the pace of life\u2014it\u2019s almost like impossible. I mean, I travel. It\u2019s all kind of\u2014busy schedules, and people are sick, and the kids, and our granddaughter\u2014but the point\u2014what I tell men is\u2014if I call them to something daily, they\u2019re going to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I call them to\u2014a path of spiritual connectedness with your wife \/ praying the Word of God\u2014that\u2019s more intentional than it\u2019s ever been because you have a path. It\u2019s more <em>regular<\/em> than you\u2019ve ever been. So, when you miss\u2014and you\u2019re going to miss, all the time\u2014just come back to where you were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>I just shared with you\u2014we\u2019re praying through Mark, Chapter 1, right now. It\u2019s not happening every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if it didn\u2019t happen yesterday, how do you initiate this with your wife? If you don\u2019t have a regular time set up every day, do you just wake up one morning and say, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s do it today\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, again, we start\u2014we creep\u2014I guess what I call kind of a routine, once you start down this path.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>For us, it\u2019s in the morning before I go to work; and we both know that. That\u2019s, generally, the way it works for us. Whatever routine works for you, follow in that routine. That sort of becomes your pattern, but it\u2019s not this slavish thing\u2014you know, 8:30 every morning\u2014and feeling guilty if we miss and all that kind of thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And if you have a breakfast appointment, or something, and you miss it that day\u2014you\u2019re out of town\u2014you don\u2019t feel like you have to call in from the road and have your prayer time over the phone?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, sometimes, we may even do something like that; but do I feel like I have to do that? Well, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what let\u2019s do? Let\u2019s call Vicki, right now\u2014and let\u2019s just find out what works for her and what she thinks about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>If that\u2019s what you want to do. Tell about the backlash\u2014when you whacked him on the side of the head and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve failed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>I just\u2014you know, I had never said those words before. I had felt it for a while, but I just felt that was pretty harsh to say this to somebody\u2014but it was just a God-thing. All I can say is\u2014we were sitting there, talking. I just\u2014it just kind of came out of my mouth; you know? Then, I was like\u2014\u201cWhat did I just say?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis response was totally a shock to me because I had felt like I had said what I wanted to say but in different ways\u2014but evidently, that day, I spoke his language when I used the f-word\u2014\u201cYou\u2019ve failed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. He heard you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>He heard me in a way that he didn\u2019t hear me any other time. It was God\u2019s timing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You adjusted. You looked to the Lord and dealt with life as it was; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Exactly; exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Sam said to us that praying together, as a couple, has been a game-changer in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you agree with that?\u2014if so, why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Well, number one, he has taken the initiative. It\u2019s no longer me feeling like: \u201cShould I say something? Should I ask him, \u2018Can we pray?\u2019\u2014you know, I don\u2019t want to be a nag.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been a game-changer in that, when we do sit down and pray\u2014it\u2019s mostly just a sharing time and how it applies to our lives, at the right moment\u2014has just been very incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But explain to us\u2014because as he explains it, you\u2019re talking about what?\u2014five or ten minutes in the morning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>I would say\u2014yes; I mean, 5 or 10 minutes. Sometimes, it\u2019s been 20 minutes, maybe; but that\u2019s not the norm. It\u2019s 5 or 10 minutes\u2014I would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Why does that 5 or 10 minutes a day make a difference in the other 23 hours and 50 minutes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Because you\u2019re connecting with each other, and you\u2019re connecting with God\u2014you\u2019re sharing your heart, and you\u2019re on the same page. You don\u2019t feel so alone. It\u2019s just the backdrop. You feel it in your spirit and in your emotions; and then, your physical, of course, feels it. So, it\u2019s a full-package, then; you know? It\u2019s a complete thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a great answer. That was great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I was looking at you, as she described the answer to your attractiveness. That was an interesting answer\u2014when a man can admit fault and have humility\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014confess his sin to his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>When we did a video taping of me teaching this in my brother\u2019s church in St. Louis\u2014at the end, we had sort of a question-and-answer dialogue\u2014a lot of men in the room. They turned, again, the table on her and said, \u201cHey, Vicki,\u201d and asked her some comments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing she said to the men is this: \u201cGuys, your wives know you. They know your shortcomings, your problems, all your issues. But you know what she wants? She wants you to step <em>toward her<\/em> in humility\u2014just step <em>toward her<\/em> and toward Christ. <em>That<\/em> is an attractive thing to her. So, I challenge you\u2014come out of the penalty box, step toward your wife in just small, simple ways. She will welcome you.\u201d That was her answer. It was, basically, the same again today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sam, you mentioned that part of the impetus for you praying, regularly, with Vicki was that your oldest daughter had wandered from the Lord. You guys were not praying regularly, together, about that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that was one of the areas of failure; but you had an Easter morning, in 2008,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that was a miracle morning for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes. We really did. It was, actually, the Monday after Easter. God had just broken into Christina\u2019s life in a miraculous way\u2014reached out into the pigpen, broke her in half, and she came home that day. We were never estranged from her\u2014we were always there, door open\u2014a loving relationship. She never renounced the Lord, but she was far from Him\u2014and a lot of foolishness. Our relationship was strained because she knew what we stood for, and we weren\u2019t going to compromise any of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when God brought her home, it was like Luke 15 come alive. I\u2019ll tell you\u2014in over 30 years of ministry, I think I could say to you, I\u2019ve never seen such a clear, profound repentance as I saw in my own daughter that night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe came home, broken. God brought her back. He\u2019s built a beautiful young woman of God in my daughter Christina\u2014and my other daughters as well. I just praise Him to be able to share that story with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are three kinds of marriages that are represented\u2014who are listening to us, right now. There are those couples who may be facing a time of suffering. It may be around a prodigal\u2014a child that has become wayward\u2014but it could be a business failure, a health issue, maybe, an extended family member, that is forcing you to consider prayer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are those who are just in their marriage, and they\u2019re in a rut. Maybe, their marriage is in trouble because of that spiritual rut. Maybe, their marriage is just blas\u00e9\u2014it\u2019s just flat. They need God to become the unifier of their marriage and help them to go deep together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, there\u2019s one other group of people listening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s those who have a good marriage\u2014who, maybe, pray together frequently\u2014who just need to revive that experience \/ refresh it by getting into the Scripture, and by, again, going deep together, as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSam, I think you\u2019ve done a great job\u2014not only in your book, but here on the broadcast\u2014of exhorting all of us, in our marriages, to not grow weary in well-doing but to truly disciple our wives and to, really, represent humility\u2014admitting our faults. I just appreciate you, your ministry, and all that you\u2019re about. Great to be with you guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sam has been married to his wife Vicki for 39 years. They have three children. He is a graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary. He\u2019s a church-planter with e3 Partners Ministry. Some of you are aware of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I am Second<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am Second\u2014yes; the other ministry they have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re connected with that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. I am Second is sort of a subset ministry of e3 Partners\u2014although, they\u2019re very much integrated. God\u2019s doing some great things. It\u2019s a web-based ministry that has films of personal testimonies for Jesus Christ. It\u2019s basically the stories of how people got their lives wrecked up, one way or another, and how Jesus Christ restored them and rescued them\u2014relevant, powerful issues of life\u2014testimony after testimony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you were telling me that the one with Brian Welch has been the most-viewed one. He was with the band, Korn\u2014a heavy metal band. I\u2019ve watched that online\u2014it\u2019s a compelling story. But\u2014the Duck Guys\u2014you just did one with them; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, we got an opportunity to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob. It\u2019s not the Duck Guys. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody knows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s <em>Duck Dynasty<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Everybody knows who I\u2019m talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give some dignity to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Duck Boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong><em>Duck Dynasty<\/em> guys\u2014yes, we got an opportunity to film the testimony of\u2014it\u2019s actually kind of a three-part or four-part film. It interviews Phil, Miss Kay, Jep, and Reed. They tell their story. It\u2019s just an amazing\u2014you need to see the film on iamsecond.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You guys have got to figure, at this point, that if the person has a long beard\u2014it\u2019ll be a compelling video! [Laughter] That\u2019s all it needs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s talk about your book here and praying with your spouse. You hit a snag in your marriage, where your wife looked you in the eyes and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve failed me, spiritually.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re a Dallas guy\u2014you graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary. You were trained in the Scriptures; and yet, you weren\u2019t praying with your wife!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019d pastored churches, you were taking people on missions trips, and you were teaching them how to evangelize. Prayer together, as a couple, was an irregular thing for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s kind of\u2014kind of crazy, almost; isn\u2019t it? We\u2019re so busy\u2014running in life and ministry\u2014and taking care of everybody else and doing everything else\u2014in ministry. I\u2019m telling you\u2014I\u2019ve talked to spiritual leaders, by the droves, in this messaging. The consistent testimony is that: \u201cWe\u2019re dropping that ball.\u201d I mean, even among spiritual leaders\u2014and you know what?\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly where the enemy wants us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s where all the harm begins to go\u2014distancing in the marriage\u2014the wife desires spiritually connectivity \/ the guy desires physical intimacy\u2014but he\u2019s denying his wife emotional and spiritual intimacy. We expect her to show up for us, physically \/ he\u2019s not showing up, emotionally and spiritually. It creates a lot of confusion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you just explained to me why guys come back to me\u2014after I\u2019ve given them the challenge to pray with their wives\u2014a couple of years later, they\u2019ll come back; and they\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know what? You\u2019re right. I can\u2019t believe how this changed our marriage.\u201d The reality is\u2014praying with his wife changed him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He became a different man because of that accountability\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and because he had to deal with his shame.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Exactly\u2014and think of the very issues that I\u2019m struggling with in my life\u2014those sore points\u2014those sins and struggles and mistakes and failures. You know what? It just very well may be, if I can get to the Word of God with my wife, in a prayerful union, God might just have some spiritual answers there for me. The very healing is in the place we opt out from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>So, guys have put themselves in this penalty box. They\u2019re just boxed up, and they\u2019re not coming out. I say to guys: \u201cI have an idea. Why don\u2019t you just stay in the penalty box until you <em>feel<\/em> like you\u2019re good enough? I mean, when\u2019s that going to happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, we need to step toward our wives, in faith\u2014come into the light \/ let the Word of God do its work\u2014just step slow \/ just step simple\u2014your wife will welcome you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Some baby steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Baby steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Where does a guy begin, though? First of all, explain expository prayer. Now, that sounds like a lofty term; but it\u2019s basically praying through the Scriptures; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>It\u2019s Scripture praying. It\u2019s simply this\u2014my wife and I read a few verses together. We commit to praying through a book. Right now, we\u2019re praying through the Gospel of Mark. It\u2019s not a race. We go very slow\u2014read a few verses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Like how many?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Oh, my, sometimes, three verses\u2014two verses. There have been times where it\u2019s been one verse\u2014truly, one verse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Until something hits you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>\u2014just something sort of strikes me. Usually, I sort of decide how many verses we read\u2014but just a few verses. We read it. We sit quiet\u2014listen for the Lord to speak to our hearts. I like to listen to my wife first: \u201cHoney, what jumps out at\u2014what do you see here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just identify some ideas from the text\u2014some key words, some topics, some ideas, some blessing, some praises\u2014whatever we see. We use those as what I call prayer points\u2014we pray those things. We share in a prayer time and pray the guided Word of God over our marriage and over our kids. That\u2019s basically it\u2014expository praying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis mentioned that he and Barbara pray together at bedtime. What has been the pattern for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Vicki and I\u2014what works for us\u2014we\u2019re empty-nesters. So, morning works for us pretty good; but a lot of times, a guy\u2019s said to me, \u201cWhen are we going to do this?\u201d I basically say: \u201cLook. I don\u2019t know your business, your marriage, or how things work;\u201d\u2014 but, basically, what I say is\u2014\u201cYou solve hard problems at work. Solve this problem at home, Sir!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>I say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Serve your wife. If she\u2019s a morning person and you\u2019re a night owl, get up. You know, if it\u2019s vice versa, you bend over more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to serve her need, to meet her, step toward her to initiate, and meet her where she\u2019s at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Because you\u2019re her husband, your prayers with her\u2014regardless of how simple you may feel they are\u2014they\u2019re more vital and they\u2019re more effective than anybody else who prays with her because you are her one-flesh partner in life. That\u2019s what Genesis tells us about one flesh in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There were some key passages\u2014you mentioned Genesis. There were some key verses that kind of jumped out at you, from the Scriptures, once God started to stir on this in your heart; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And before he comments on that\u2014for the guy who\u2019s listening, who wants to know how to get started\u2014what Sam is about to give you is a cheat sheet. These are three passages of Scripture he\u2019s going to share with you, where you could begin this process of praying together with your wife. We\u2019re going to make them available on our website.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes, these verses are, in a sense, really more the backbone of why it is that God\u2019s calling us into this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first one\u2019s in Genesis, Chapter 2, verse 24: \u201cFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat hit me here was the power of the concept of one-flesh. You know, in a Christian marriage, we have God, husband, and wife. It\u2019s like a triangle\u2014one, plus one, plus one, equals one Christian marriage. That\u2019s transparency, and intimacy, and oneness\u2014the unique oneness of marriage that God has designed for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if we will pray the Word of God, with our wife, you\u2019re literally putting the Word of God in the middle of that triangle to create great power and guided prayers in the will of God. The one-flesh power is something that really struck me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You, and your wife, and God sitting down, every day, to have a conversation together\u2014about life, about what\u2019s important, about what God has already said in His Word\u2014that should strengthen that triangle; shouldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, it certainly would. I want to correct one thing\u2014it\u2019s not daily. It\u2019s still not daily for us. That would be ideal; but I\u2019ll tell you\u2014the pace of life\u2014it\u2019s almost like impossible. I mean, I travel. It\u2019s all kind of\u2014busy schedules, and people are sick, and the kids, and our granddaughter\u2014but the point\u2014what I tell men is\u2014if I call them to something daily, they\u2019re going to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I call them to\u2014a path of spiritual connectedness with your wife \/ praying the Word of God\u2014that\u2019s more intentional than it\u2019s ever been because you have a path. It\u2019s more <em>regular<\/em> than you\u2019ve ever been. So, when you miss\u2014and you\u2019re going to miss, all the time\u2014just come back to where you were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>I just shared with you\u2014we\u2019re praying through Mark, Chapter 1, right now. It\u2019s not happening every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if it didn\u2019t happen yesterday, how do you initiate this with your wife? If you don\u2019t have a regular time set up every day, do you just wake up one morning and say, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s do it today\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, again, we start\u2014we creep\u2014I guess what I call kind of a routine, once you start down this path.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>For us, it\u2019s in the morning before I go to work; and we both know that. That\u2019s, generally, the way it works for us. Whatever routine works for you, follow in that routine. That sort of becomes your pattern, but it\u2019s not this slavish thing\u2014you know, 8:30 every morning\u2014and feeling guilty if we miss and all that kind of thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And if you have a breakfast appointment, or something, and you miss it that day\u2014you\u2019re out of town\u2014you don\u2019t feel like you have to call in from the road and have your prayer time over the phone?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Well, sometimes, we may even do something like that; but do I feel like I have to do that? Well, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what let\u2019s do? Let\u2019s call Vicki, right now\u2014and let\u2019s just find out what works for her and what she thinks about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>If that\u2019s what you want to do. Tell about the backlash\u2014when you whacked him on the side of the head and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve failed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>I just\u2014you know, I had never said those words before. I had felt it for a while, but I just felt that was pretty harsh to say this to somebody\u2014but it was just a God-thing. All I can say is\u2014we were sitting there, talking. I just\u2014it just kind of came out of my mouth; you know? Then, I was like\u2014\u201cWhat did I just say?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis response was totally a shock to me because I had felt like I had said what I wanted to say but in different ways\u2014but evidently, that day, I spoke his language when I used the f-word\u2014\u201cYou\u2019ve failed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. He heard you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>He heard me in a way that he didn\u2019t hear me any other time. It was God\u2019s timing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You adjusted. You looked to the Lord and dealt with life as it was; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Exactly; exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Sam said to us that praying together, as a couple, has been a game-changer in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you agree with that?\u2014if so, why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Well, number one, he has taken the initiative. It\u2019s no longer me feeling like: \u201cShould I say something? Should I ask him, \u2018Can we pray?\u2019\u2014you know, I don\u2019t want to be a nag.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been a game-changer in that, when we do sit down and pray\u2014it\u2019s mostly just a sharing time and how it applies to our lives, at the right moment\u2014has just been very incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But explain to us\u2014because as he explains it, you\u2019re talking about what?\u2014five or ten minutes in the morning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>I would say\u2014yes; I mean, 5 or 10 minutes. Sometimes, it\u2019s been 20 minutes, maybe; but that\u2019s not the norm. It\u2019s 5 or 10 minutes\u2014I would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Why does that 5 or 10 minutes a day make a difference in the other 23 hours and 50 minutes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Because you\u2019re connecting with each other, and you\u2019re connecting with God\u2014you\u2019re sharing your heart, and you\u2019re on the same page. You don\u2019t feel so alone. You don\u2019t feel so isolated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Vicki, you\u2019ve been a good sport to take our call and allow us to interrupt your day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Oh, don\u2019t think about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, one last question, though, and I just\u2014I want you to be real honest here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Has this changed how attractive Sam is to you, as a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>I think the transparency, the humility, the admitting the weakness and the failure was the attractive part\u2014which is a backdrop to every time we pray together. It\u2019s just the backdrop. You feel it in your spirit and in your emotions; and then, your physical, of course, feels it. So, it\u2019s a full-package, then; you know? It\u2019s a complete thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a great answer. That was great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I was looking at you, as she described the answer to your attractiveness. That was an interesting answer\u2014when a man can admit fault and have humility\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014confess his sin to his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>When we did a video taping of me teaching this in my brother\u2019s church in St. Louis\u2014at the end, we had sort of a question-and-answer dialogue\u2014a lot of men in the room. They turned, again, the table on her and said, \u201cHey, Vicki,\u201d and asked her some comments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing she said to the men is this: \u201cGuys, your wives know you. They know your shortcomings, your problems, all your issues. But you know what she wants? She wants you to step <em>toward her<\/em> in humility\u2014just step <em>toward her<\/em> and toward Christ. <em>That<\/em> is an attractive thing to her. So, I challenge you\u2014come out of the penalty box, step toward your wife in just small, simple ways. She will welcome you.\u201d That was her answer. It was, basically, the same again today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sam, you mentioned that part of the impetus for you praying, regularly, with Vicki was that your oldest daughter had wandered from the Lord. You guys were not praying regularly, together, about that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that was one of the areas of failure; but you had an Easter morning, in 2008,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that was a miracle morning for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sam: <\/strong>Yes. We really did. It was, actually, the Monday after Easter. God had just broken into Christina\u2019s life in a miraculous way\u2014reached out into the pigpen, broke her in half, and she came home that day. We were never estranged from her\u2014we were always there, door open\u2014a loving relationship. She never renounced the Lord, but she was far from Him\u2014and a lot of foolishness. Our relationship was strained because she knew what we stood for, and we weren\u2019t going to compromise any of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when God brought her home, it was like Luke 15 come alive. I\u2019ll tell you\u2014in over 30 years of ministry, I think I could say to you, I\u2019ve never seen such a clear, profound repentance as I saw in my own daughter that night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe came home, broken. God brought her back. He\u2019s built a beautiful young woman of God in my daughter Christina\u2014and my other daughters as well. I just praise Him to be able to share that story with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are three kinds of marriages that are represented\u2014who are listening to us, right now. There are those couples who may be facing a time of suffering. It may be around a prodigal\u2014a child that has become wayward\u2014but it could be a business failure, a health issue, maybe, an extended family member, that is forcing you to consider prayer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are those who are just in their marriage, and they\u2019re in a rut. Maybe, their marriage is in trouble because of that spiritual rut. Maybe, their marriage is just blas\u00e9\u2014it\u2019s just flat. They need God to become the unifier of their marriage and help them to go deep together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, there\u2019s one other group of people listening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s those who have a good marriage\u2014who, maybe, pray together frequently\u2014who just need to revive that experience \/ refresh it by getting into the Scripture, and by, again, going deep together, as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSam, I think you\u2019ve done a great job\u2014not only in your book, but here on the broadcast\u2014of exhorting all of us, in our marriages, to not grow weary in well-doing but to truly disciple our wives and to, really, represent humility\u2014admitting our faults. I just appreciate you, your ministry, and all that you\u2019re about.
