That is one of those subjects where I need to be punched from time to time. You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014encouraged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The guy who is going to be doing the punching\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ooh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014he is a guy\u2014that, if he was preaching\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I was going to say heavy-weight, but he might not appreciate that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If he was preaching 100 miles away, I\u2019d drive to hear him preach because he is just a <em>great<\/em> pastor and preacher. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Crawford Loritts is a long-term friend; in fact, we go all the way back to the early \u201880s. We both share the same birth date, and he is the pastor of Fellowship Bible Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is the same birth date, but one of you is older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am more mature. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That is what I wanted to get at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am a couple of years older than Crawford. He talked to us about the power and the priority of prayer. Here is Crawford Loritts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford: <\/strong>Every year at our church\u2014we have started a tradition there\u2014the first full week in January is a week of extraordinary prayer. I preach the first Sunday and the second Sunday on prayer. We have just come through that at our church. I am more convinced than ever before that what E. M. Bounds said in his classic book, <em>Power Through Prayer<\/em>, is absolutely, categorically, infinitely correct and right\u2014and that is: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe greatest thing a Christian can do is to pray.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis past week, I had two marvelous reminders of the power of prayer. I had the wonderful privilege on Wednesday of flying up and meeting with Dr. Graham. I walked in with two other friends. I had a list of questions to ask him; but then, when I sat down and we started talking, I just didn\u2019t want to ask him anything\u2014I just wanted to listen, but I did ask him this question\u2014I said: \u201cDr. Graham, what is the most significant thing that has ever happened in your life and ministry. What is core?\u201d Before I could finish the question, he said: \u201cPrayer. Prayer has been everything.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen on Friday, I got a letter from a 90-year-old woman, Hazel Quackenbush. We have known Hazel for years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to college with her daughter. Her daughter dated and subsequently married one of my best friends\u2014his name is Joe Douglas. Joe and I were prayer partners all the way through college. Joe\u2019s room was right next to mine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t contacted Hazel in a long time. You know, every time I get a letter, I feel guilty about not contacting her. It had been years since I talked with her. We exchange Christmas cards and this kind of thing. I saw in her letter that she had turned 90, and they had a big birthday for her. There was a phone number\u2014so I called her Friday. I said: \u201cMrs. Quackenbush, do you know who this is?\u00a0 This is Crawford Loritts. Do you remember me?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOf course I remember you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I remember you?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Then she said these words, \u201cYour picture is on my prayer board,\u201d\u2014that woman has been praying for me all these years. The greatest thing we can do is pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy do we pray?\u00a0 I think there are two reasons why we pray. I am going to give you the lesser of them, and then I want to dive into the main reason why we pray. Then I want to talk about\u2014this might be impossible\u2014but I want to talk about the loving involvement of the Trinity in our prayer lives. It is going to be more relational than it sounds. There are two great reasons why we pray. The lesser of the two is to get our needs met. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes we don\u2019t pray. The reason we don\u2019t pray is because of a pride issue. I have discovered, in my life\u2014that proud people can\u2019t pray. Proud people struggle with prayer. The reason is quite obvious, when you think about it, because prayer is an expression of our neediness. You cannot pray authentically until you embrace your own need. Prayer is a statement that \u201cI am desperate.\u201d\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that \u201cI don\u2019t have it all together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am forever indebted to Bob Lepine for sending me one of the top five books that I have read in the last five to ten years. It is a book by a guy by the name of Paul Miller. The name of the book is <em>A Praying Life<\/em>. The first chapter and his chapter on the relationship between cynicism and prayer are worth the price of the book itself. Miller says that: \u201cOne of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive. In the broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth. Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary. Money can do what prayer does. It is quicker and less time-consuming. Our trust in ourselves and in our talents makes us\u201d\u2014listen to this line\u2014\u201cstructurally independent of God. As a result, exhortations to pray don\u2019t stick.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a bind; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You aren\u2019t going to pray until you are in touch with your need. As a pastor, I have learned that I can cajole, and preach, and guilt people, and tell them how to do stuff\u2014particularly in the prayer area\u2014but they are not going to pray until, somewhere along the line, there is this avalanche of need that grips them. That is the tipping point. That is when we really, really pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is not what I am going to talk about today. I am going to talk about the second reason\u2014which is the primary reason, biblically\u2014I\u2019m convinced of this from Genesis to Revelation. The real reason why we pray is because God wants us to experience His love and care for us. Meeting our needs is a backstroke issue with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real reason why we pray is because of the loving heart of God that pursues us and wants us to experience\u2014wants us to experience His love and care for us. This takes legalism out of prayer. This really motivates us to pray because, quite frankly, prayer is the means through which we hang out with God. There is no intimacy with God apart from interaction with His heart. The way that we interact with His heart is by seeking Him, talking to Him, experiencing Him. Prayer is <em>massive<\/em>. It is the gateway into the very presence of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the reason why Hazel Quackenbush and Billy Graham will answer: \u201cPrayer is everything.\u201d\u00a0 They weren\u2019t saying that they\u2014like going to the grocery store\u2014God just checked off what they were asking for. They were talking about the intimate relationship that they had with a loving Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a way through which we hang out with God. God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why, in the Bible\u2014the Bible itself\u2014it is really profound\u2014I am just going to water ski today, and I want to encourage you to do a deeper study of this. That\u2019s why, in the Bible, the Trinity is pictured as a loving resource. Have you ever thought about it?\u00a0 The three persons of the Godhead major in prayer on our behalf. It is this picture of a sovereign, loving, pursuant God\u2014through God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit\u2014<em>chasing us down<\/em> and drawing us to Himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, let\u2019s just take a snapshot of these three portraits. The first portrait is a caring God. The second portrait is a powerful representative. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third portrait is a passionate interceder. Our caring God\u2014I want you to turn to a text\u2014Luke, Chapter 11. Just leave it open there for a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story is told of Lyndon Johnson. During his administration, his press secretary was a believer. They were having a staff luncheon one day. Down the table from President Johnson was his press secretary. His press secretary was saying grace before his meal. Johnson glanced at him and saw his lips moving and just shouted at him\u2014he said: \u201cSpeak up! I can\u2019t hear a word you are saying!\u201d His press secretary said, \u201cWith all due respect, Mr. President, I wasn\u2019t addressing you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we pray, we are going to the God of the universe; but the God of the universe \/ the sovereign God of the universe wants to be addressed as, \u201cFather.\u201d Look at what He says here in Luke, Chapter 11. I really want to look at verses 11-13\u2014but I do want to just drill down to the opening word when Jesus\u2019 disciples came to Him and asked Him, \u201cWould You teach us how to pray?\u201d\u00a0 He says: \u201cYes. Here\u2019s the first thing that you say: \u2018Father.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 We sometimes skip over that and look at all the other things that He says in the Lord\u2019s Prayer or the model prayer that the Lord prayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it begins with, \u201cFather.\u201d Then Jesus picks up the explanation and the application of that down in verse 11: \u201cWhat father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?\u00a0 Or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion?\u00a0 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mm, mm\u2014\u201chow much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to get caught in the weeds of the text here and analyze the analogy that He is talking about\u2014this kind of thing\u2014but I do want to make a few applications or inferences\/implications from what He is saying. One is that God wants to give us what is good for us. I don\u2019t want to play with words. Notice that I said what is good for us, not necessarily what is good to us. That will change the way we pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gives us what is good <em>for us<\/em> and not necessarily what is good <em>to us<\/em>. Those of us who are pastors and whatever\u2014we know that our people go through a bunch of crap. I just sat with a couple who lost both of their sons\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one of them to full-blown AIDS\u2014that is because\u2014they are both hemophiliacs, and he got a bad batch of blood back in the \u201880s\u2014and just lost their second son. As I sat there\u2014I have learned to look them in the eye\u2014and it\u2019s not unspiritual to say \/ as I said to them, with tears coming down their cheeks: \u201cDeath stinks! It\u2019s a thief. It\u2019s a robber. It\u2019s awful!\u201d Don\u2019t be unduly spiritual\u2014the Bible says it is awful\/horrible\u2014I have, categorically, nothing to say. It wasn\u2019t good <em>to them<\/em>\u2014not at all!\u00a0 We have to be careful about how Pollyannaish we are about these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as we read this text here, don\u2019t get superficial. He is not saying that God always does stuff that is good <em>to us<\/em>\u2014dissolve into this dastardly\/hellacious theology of name-it-and-claim-it and prosperity crap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod doesn\u2019t do things that are good to us; he does things that are good <em>for us<\/em>. The implications are right there. God does want the best for us, but not by our definition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, God\u2014what we think is good could be harmful \/ could be harmful\u2014but God always wants what is good. The third implication is: \u201cWhat might be a blessing to you could be a curse to me.\u201d\u00a0 You got to get past this comparison\/jealousy stuff. Simply because God said, \u201cYes,\u201d to someone else about how their\u2014that their prodigal came home when they were 18\u2014don\u2019t be prescriptive when it comes to God because what could be a blessing to you, from a timing perspective, could be a dastardly curse to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other observation I want to make about this text here is a perplexing statement in verse 13. I have often wondered, \u201cWhat in the world is He talking about?\u201d It seems as if He is talking about a father\u2019s relationship\u2014and then, all of a sudden\u2014He flips the script when He says, in verse 13: \u201c\u2019If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just\u2014\u201cWhy is the Holy Spirit in here now? It seems like You are mixing Your metaphors or You are changing the analogy here\u2014why the Holy Spirit?\u201d I have to tell you\u2014I don\u2019t exactly know why, but I do have a clue. I really think that what He is saying is that God is giving us supernatural perspective and power if we want it, as we pray. Yes, God knows everything; but we also have the Spirit of God, who comes alongside, and He gives us spiritual insight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan I suggest to you\u2014whenever you are going through deep troubled waters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014whenever you are going through a tremendous challenge, it is tremendously important to immerse yourself in the control of the Spirit of God. You need to see where you are going and what you are doing through supernatural eyes. We have got to do it counterintuitive\u2014run to the Father. I love what Warren Wiersbe says along these lines. He makes the observation: \u201cBecause God knows us and loves us, we never need to be afraid of the answer He gives us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was about 10 or 11 years old, I was swimming up at the Boys Club there in Newark, New Jersey, which wasn\u2019t too far from our house. A bunch of us were just jumping off the side of the pool and just turning in the air as we jumped and went in the water. When I jumped off, I was a little too close to the side of the pool. I turned around and hit my chin on the side of the pool\u2014I busted my chin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad worked nights so he happened to be home when they called my father. He came and got me and took me to the hospital. Back in those days, they didn\u2019t have the anesthesia that they have now\u2014this kind of thing. So, when you got stitches, you got stitches and everything that went with it. So, I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014I can remember it to this day. I\u2019m lying there on the table and the doctor says to my dad: \u201cHold his arms down. Hold his arms down.\u201d\u00a0 He stitched me up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad would not hurt me for anything; but sometimes, you have to be held down before you are fixed. Do you hear what I am saying to you?\u00a0 Somebody here needs to hear that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Crawford Loritts talking about prayer and about the Father who chastens the ones whom He loves. That is an important reminder when we are in the midst of trial to know that all discipline seems unpleasant at the time, but it does yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are two things in that message that really just stood out to me, personally. One is\u2014prayerlessness generally can be associated with arrogance or pride. I have just found, in my own life, when I am most dependent upon God, I am not typically as full of myself. The reason I say it that way\u2014the closer I get to Christ, I am constantly being convicted how self-absorbed I really can be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing Crawford said around the love of God. It is the love of God that compels us to turn our hearts back to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in the midst of discipline, God\u2019s love invites us back into a relationship with Him. I am thinking of Romans 8\u2014the final verses that talk about neither height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. I don\u2019t know what you, as a listener, right now, are experiencing; but I want you to know there really is a God in heaven who is passionately in love with you, and is pursuing you, and wants a relationship with you. I preach the first Sunday and the second Sunday on prayer. We have just come through that at our church. I am more convinced than ever before that what E. M. I had a list of questions to ask him; but then, when I sat down and we started talking, I just didn\u2019t want to ask him anything\u2014I just wanted to listen, but I did ask him this question\u2014I said: \u201cDr. Graham, what is the most significant thing that has ever happened in your life and ministry. What is core?\u201d Before I could finish the question, he said: \u201cPrayer. Prayer has been everything.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen on Friday, I got a letter from a 90-year-old woman, Hazel Quackenbush. We have known Hazel for years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to college with her daughter. Her daughter dated and subsequently married one of my best friends\u2014his name is Joe Douglas. Joe and I were prayer partners all the way through college. Joe\u2019s room was right next to mine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t contacted Hazel in a long time. You know, every time I get a letter, I feel guilty about not contacting her. It had been years since I talked with her. We exchange Christmas cards and this kind of thing. I saw in her letter that she had turned 90, and they had a big birthday for her. There was a phone number\u2014so I called her Friday. I said: \u201cMrs. Quackenbush, do you know who this is?\u00a0 This is Crawford Loritts. Do you remember me?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOf course I remember you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I remember you?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Then she said these words, \u201cYour picture is on my prayer board,\u201d\u2014that woman has been praying for me all these years. The greatest thing we can do is pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy do we pray?\u00a0 I think there are two reasons why we pray. I am going to give you the lesser of them, and then I want to dive into the main reason why we pray. Then I want to talk about\u2014this might be impossible\u2014but I want to talk about the loving involvement of the Trinity in our prayer lives. It is going to be more relational than it sounds. There are two great reasons why we pray. The lesser of the two is to get our needs met. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes we don\u2019t pray. The reason we don\u2019t pray is because of a pride issue. I have discovered, in my life\u2014that proud people can\u2019t pray. Proud people struggle with prayer. The reason is quite obvious, when you think about it, because prayer is an expression of our neediness. You cannot pray authentically until you embrace your own need. Prayer is a statement that \u201cI am desperate.\u201d\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that \u201cI don\u2019t have it all together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am forever indebted to Bob Lepine for sending me one of the top five books that I have read in the last five to ten years. It is a book by a guy by the name of Paul Miller. The name of the book is <em>A Praying Life<\/em>. The first chapter and his chapter on the relationship between cynicism and prayer are worth the price of the book itself. Miller says that: \u201cOne of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive. In the broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth. Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary. Money can do what prayer does. It is quicker and less time-consuming. Our trust in ourselves and in our talents makes us\u201d\u2014listen to this line\u2014\u201cstructurally independent of God. As a result, exhortations to pray don\u2019t stick.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a bind; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You aren\u2019t going to pray until you are in touch with your need. As a pastor, I have learned that I can cajole, and preach, and guilt people, and tell them how to do stuff\u2014particularly in the prayer area\u2014but they are not going to pray until, somewhere along the line, there is this avalanche of need that grips them. That is the tipping point. That is when we really, really pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is not what I am going to talk about today. I am going to talk about the second reason\u2014which is the primary reason, biblically\u2014I\u2019m convinced of this from Genesis to Revelation. The real reason why we pray is because God wants us to experience His love and care for us. Meeting our needs is a backstroke issue with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real reason why we pray is because of the loving heart of God that pursues us and wants us to experience\u2014wants us to experience His love and care for us. This takes legalism out of prayer. This really motivates us to pray because, quite frankly, prayer is the means through which we hang out with God. There is no intimacy with God apart from interaction with His heart. The way that we interact with His heart is by seeking Him, talking to Him, experiencing Him. Prayer is <em>massive<\/em>. It is the gateway into the very presence of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the reason why Hazel Quackenbush and Billy Graham will answer: \u201cPrayer is everything.\u201d\u00a0 They weren\u2019t saying that they\u2014like going to the grocery store\u2014God just checked off what they were asking for. They were talking about the intimate relationship that they had with a loving Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a way through which we hang out with God. God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why, in the Bible\u2014the Bible itself\u2014it is really profound\u2014I am just going to water ski today, and I want to encourage you to do a deeper study of this. That\u2019s why, in the Bible, the Trinity is pictured as a loving resource. Have you ever thought about it?\u00a0 The three persons of the Godhead major in prayer on our behalf. It is this picture of a sovereign, loving, pursuant God\u2014through God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit\u2014<em>chasing us down<\/em> and drawing us to Himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, let\u2019s just take a snapshot of these three portraits. The first portrait is a caring God. The second portrait is a powerful representative. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third portrait is a passionate interceder. Our caring God\u2014I want you to turn to a text\u2014Luke, Chapter 11. Just leave it open there for a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story is told of Lyndon Johnson. During his administration, his press secretary was a believer. They were having a staff luncheon one day. Down the table from President Johnson was his press secretary. His press secretary was saying grace before his meal. Johnson glanced at him and saw his lips moving and just shouted at him\u2014he said: \u201cSpeak up! I can\u2019t hear a word you are saying!\u201d His press secretary said, \u201cWith all due respect, Mr. President, I wasn\u2019t addressing you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we pray, we are going to the God of the universe; but the God of the universe \/ the sovereign God of the universe wants to be addressed as, \u201cFather.\u201d Look at what He says here in Luke, Chapter 11. I really want to look at verses 11-13\u2014but I do want to just drill down to the opening word when Jesus\u2019 disciples came to Him and asked Him, \u201cWould You teach us how to pray?\u201d\u00a0 He says: \u201cYes. Here\u2019s the first thing that you say: \u2018Father.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 We sometimes skip over that and look at all the other things that He says in the Lord\u2019s Prayer or the model prayer that the Lord prayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it begins with, \u201cFather.\u201d Then Jesus picks up the explanation and the application of that down in verse 11: \u201cWhat father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?\u00a0 Or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion?\u00a0 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mm, mm\u2014\u201chow much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to get caught in the weeds of the text here and analyze the analogy that He is talking about\u2014this kind of thing\u2014but I do want to make a few applications or inferences\/implications from what He is saying. One is that God wants to give us what is good for us. I don\u2019t want to play with words. Notice that I said what is good for us, not necessarily what is good to us. That will change the way we pray. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gives us what is good <em>for us<\/em> and not necessarily what is good <em>to us<\/em>. Those of us who are pastors and whatever\u2014we know that our people go through a bunch of crap. I just sat with a couple who lost both of their sons\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one of them to full-blown AIDS\u2014that is because\u2014they are both hemophiliacs, and he got a bad batch of blood back in the \u201880s\u2014and just lost their second son. As I sat there\u2014I have learned to look them in the eye\u2014and it\u2019s not unspiritual to say \/ as I said to them, with tears coming down their cheeks: \u201cDeath stinks! It\u2019s a thief. It\u2019s a robber. It\u2019s awful!\u201d Don\u2019t be unduly spiritual\u2014the Bible says it is awful\/horrible\u2014I have, categorically, nothing to say. It wasn\u2019t good <em>to them<\/em>\u2014not at all!\u00a0 We have to be careful about how Pollyannaish we are about these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as we read this text here, don\u2019t get superficial. He is not saying that God always does stuff that is good <em>to us<\/em>\u2014dissolve into this dastardly\/hellacious theology of name-it-and-claim-it and prosperity crap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod doesn\u2019t do things that are good to us; he does things that are good <em>for us<\/em>. The implications are right there. God does want the best for us, but not by our definition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, God\u2014what we think is good could be harmful \/ could be harmful\u2014but God always wants what is good. The third implication is: \u201cWhat might be a blessing to you could be a curse to me.\u201d\u00a0 You got to get past this comparison\/jealousy stuff. Simply because God said, \u201cYes,\u201d to someone else about how their\u2014that their prodigal came home when they were 18\u2014don\u2019t be prescriptive when it comes to God because what could be a blessing to you, from a timing perspective, could be a dastardly curse to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other observation I want to make about this text here is a perplexing statement in verse 13. I have often wondered, \u201cWhat in the world is He talking about?\u201d It seems as if He is talking about a father\u2019s relationship\u2014and then, all of a sudden\u2014He flips the script when He says, in verse 13: \u201c\u2019If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just\u2014\u201cWhy is the Holy Spirit in here now? It seems like You are mixing Your metaphors or You are changing the analogy here\u2014why the Holy Spirit?\u201d I have to tell you\u2014I don\u2019t exactly know why, but I do have a clue. I really think that what He is saying is that God is giving us supernatural perspective and power if we want it, as we pray. Yes, God knows everything; but we also have the Spirit of God, who comes alongside, and He gives us spiritual insight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan I suggest to you\u2014whenever you are going through deep troubled waters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014whenever you are going through a tremendous challenge, it is tremendously important to immerse yourself in the control of the Spirit of God. You need to see where you are going and what you are doing through supernatural eyes. We have got to do it counterintuitive\u2014run to the Father. I love what Warren Wiersbe says along these lines. He makes the observation: \u201cBecause God knows us and loves us, we never need to be afraid of the answer He gives us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was about 10 or 11 years old, I was swimming up at the Boys Club there in Newark, New Jersey, which wasn\u2019t too far from our house. A bunch of us were just jumping off the side of the pool and just turning in the air as we jumped and went in the water. When I jumped off, I was a little too close to the side of the pool. I turned around and hit my chin on the side of the pool\u2014I busted my chin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad worked nights so he happened to be home when they called my father. He came and got me and took me to the hospital. Back in those days, they didn\u2019t have the anesthesia that they have now\u2014this kind of thing. So, when you got stitches, you got stitches and everything that went with it. So, I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014I can remember it to this day. I\u2019m lying there on the table and the doctor says to my dad: \u201cHold his arms down. Hold his arms down.\u201d\u00a0 He stitched me up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad would not hurt me for anything; but sometimes, you have to be held down before you are fixed. Do you hear what I am saying to you?\u00a0 Somebody here needs to hear that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Crawford Loritts talking about prayer and about the Father who chastens the ones whom He loves. That is an important reminder when we are in the midst of trial to know that all discipline seems unpleasant at the time, but it does yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are two things in that message that really just stood out to me, personally. One is\u2014prayerlessness generally can be associated with arrogance or pride. I have just found, in my own life, when I am most dependent upon God, I am not typically as full of myself. The reason I say it that way\u2014the closer I get to Christ, I am constantly being convicted how self-absorbed I really can be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing Crawford said around the love of God. It is the love of God that compels us to turn our hearts back to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in the midst of discipline, God\u2019s love invites us back into a relationship with Him. I am thinking of Romans 8\u2014the final verses that talk about neither height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. I don\u2019t know what you, as a listener, right now, are experiencing; but I want you to know there really is a God in heaven who is passionately in love with you, and is pursuing you, and wants a relationship with you.
