Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I asked you earlier if you weren\u2019t concerned about getting letters. You said, \u201cNo, no!\u201d And now we\u2019re going to move right in to talk about submission; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re still not concerned about getting letters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m really not because we\u2019re going to talk about it in a very fair, honest, and, hopefully, compassionate and loving way\u2014but in a biblical way. We\u2019re going to talk about it with Courtney Reissig. Welcome back to the broadcast, Courtney.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Thanks for having me. It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Courtney is the author of a book called <em>The Accidental Feminist. <\/em>She is a pastor\u2019s wife, married to Daniel. In fact, that\u2019s how I want to start to get to this subject of submission. How did you and Daniel meet, and did he have any idea what he was getting when he got you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No! Well, yes and no. We met at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. I was a seminary student and so was he. We met through a friend, who met him on campus, and who said, \u201cYou should meet this guy!\u201d She was married, and she <em>loved<\/em> being a matchmaker. I was like, \u201cI\u2019m not meeting some guy!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we finally met. She orchestrated a way for us to meet, and then Daniel just took over from there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What attracted you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I just liked him. I liked talking to him, I thought he was cute, and we just kind of gravitated to each other. He was confident, but he wasn\u2019t proud. He just kind of carried himself in a way that I wanted to follow. I was intimidated by people who would get married really quickly. But for some reason, I found myself really drawn to him and was like, \u201cWell, if he wants to get married quickly, I guess that\u2019s fine.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember thinking, \u201cWhat is he doing to me?!\u201d Like on our first date, he kind of just said: \u201cI\u2019m not proposing to you, but I have a plan. We\u2019re not just dating for fun.\u201d I mean, we were 25 and 26\u2014we weren\u2019t like 19 and 20. We weren\u2019t fresh, new kids in college or something like that. He just laid out a plan\u2014like: \u201cI would love for this to end in marriage. If it doesn\u2019t, we\u2019ll know pretty quickly.\u201d I think the next day we hung out. We were watching a football game with one of his friends and then his friend left. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cWe need to leave. We\u2019re not going to stay here when no one\u2019s at my apartment,\u201d\u2014just real assertiveness\u2014kind of like, \u201cHe\u2019s kind of different than any other guy I\u2019ve dated.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Setting boundaries,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014defining the relationship\u2014taking it forward. So how did he ask you to marry him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, so, we met in September and went on our first date a few weeks later. Then, we got engaged in December\u2014a few months later\u2014and we got married in May.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So from September to May\u2014that was from start to finish?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, it was a done deal!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So take us to your premarital counseling because you had some issues come up during premarital counseling that were kind of fresh for you; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. We talked about submission. One of the questions they asked us with submission was, \u201cCourtney, what is your basis for submission?\u201d As I thought about it, my basis for submission was not the man that I was submitting to\u2014it wasn\u2019t Daniel. When Paul tells wives to submit to their husbands, it\u2019s \u201cas unto the Lord.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a better model of who we\u2019re submitting to than our husbands because our husbands are going to fail us. I\u2019m submitting to Daniel as I submit to Christ\u2014so I\u2019m submitting, ultimately, to Christ, who is Lord over my life but also Lord over his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when he\u2019s not the man he should be\u2014in the same way that I\u2019m not the woman I should be\u2014I\u2019m still called to submit to him. Obviously, if he\u2019s in sin, that\u2019s another ballgame. But for just the general, day-in\/day-out, I\u2019m married to a sinner. I\u2019m still called to submit to him because I\u2019m submitting, ultimately, to Christ and His Lordship over both of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t long after you married then\u2014he came to you with a decision that he was about to make that was going to test this theology of submission that you so beautifully described a few moments ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. We were both seminary students when we got married, and I <em>loved <\/em>seminary. I loved every bit of it\u2014I loved studying \/ I loved writing papers. We had my income from my job\u2014I had a pretty decent job at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was working part-time at the church and then part-time at McDonald\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. We couldn\u2019t afford for both of us to go to seminary. He\u2019s very wise with our finances, and he wasn\u2019t willing to let us go into debt to go to seminary. He knew that God was calling <em>him<\/em> to the ministry and that, as the man, was calling him to provide for his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe best choice for us was for <em>him<\/em> to do seminary and for me to drop out. At the time, he said, \u201cLet\u2019s try one class.\u201d Our first year we were married \/ the first semester, I took one class online. Even then, I was mad. I was: \u201cI just want to go to seminary. I want to do what you\u2019re doing.\u201d I thought he was against me, and I didn\u2019t understand why he wasn\u2019t letting me do what I wanted to do. I felt like I was letting people down who wanted to see me write and wanted to see me do things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSix months into being married, we were driving home from my parents\u2019 house. My parents live in Florida, and we were driving home at Christmas time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had been thinking about it and praying about it. He said, \u201cI love you; and I know how much you love seminary, but I just don\u2019t think we can swing it financially.\u201d The frustration in my heart that I had felt three, four, or five months earlier had, over time, had dissipated. It had really helped me to see that Daniel was <em>for<\/em> me. There were a number of times, in our first six months of marriage\u2014where he looked at me and said: \u201cI\u2019m <em>for<\/em> you. I\u2019m not against you. I believe in you. I just\u2014we can\u2019t afford it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like the Lord really worked in my heart by that point\u2014six months later\u2014to really see that God was using Daniel to protect us. For us, we needed for me to step back and not finish. I had to submit to his leadership in that regard and trust that what I wanted to do\u2014writing and ministry more full-time\u2014could come later; but, at the time, I needed to submit to his leadership in our life and trust what God would do with the outcome of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there would be those listeners\u2014as soon as you started telling that story and they saw where it was headed\u2014the back of their necks\u2014the hair would stand up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They go: \u201cWhy would you do that? Why did you submit to that?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, because I believe that God has called me to submit, I believe that it\u2019s the role He has given me as the wife to Daniel. I\u2019m called to submit to his leadership. Daniel will give Him an account for how he leads our family, and I\u2019ll give an account for how I submit to him and trust his leadership of us because, ultimately, it\u2019s trusting in God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not submitting to Daniel insomuch as I\u2019m submitting to him as though he\u2019s like my god. I\u2019m submitting to God and His ultimate authority over me and His ultimate <em>love<\/em> for me. He has given me Daniel to shape me and to sharpen me in the same way that I\u2019ve been given to Daniel to do the same thing. That is the role that He has given me, as his wife. I believe that I\u2019m submitting to God\u2019s ultimate authority over me and trusting that He\u2019s going to continue working.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What I hear you saying\u2014and I want you to affirm this because I don\u2019t want to put words in your mouth\u2014you believe\u2014from Ephesians, Chapter 5; from Colossians, Chapter 3; from 1 Peter, Chapter 3\u2014that wives are called to submit because their husbands have been placed in a position\u2014a structural position\u2014not one of value \/ but one of being responsible\u2014to give leadership to his wife and his family\u2014that you are called to follow that leadership; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely! And everything is pointing to an even greater reality\u2014like I say in the book, how we are image-bearers. We are imaging God and telling a <em>story<\/em> about Who God is. My role, as a wife who submits to her husband, is telling a greater story about God and His ultimate love and plan for the world. Within the godhead, we see submission and an authority structure. The Son submits to the Father and the Spirit submits to the Father. The Spirit was guiding the Son, as He was on this earth and was living out His role, as a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see all of these authority and submission structures in the godhead\u2014that\u2019s what it\u2019s ultimately pointing to. It\u2019s not this arbitrary thing that God said: \u201cThis sounds like a great idea! I\u2019m just going to make women submit to men.\u201d Everything in life is a metaphor, pointing to God\u2019s ultimate glory in His creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, there\u2019s nowhere in Scripture that we see any indication of the Father submitting to the Son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, and also it\u2019s pointing to the metaphor of how He has saved us. In Christ, we see the church is submitting to Christ. Christ came to redeem a bride for Himself. The church is submitting to Christ. Christ came, and died, and purchased us\u2014we are now His bride\u2014we are now in His family. Christ doesn\u2019t submit to the church, but the church <em>always <\/em>submits to Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Bible talks about this being a mystery\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s that a husband and wife together in this dance\u2014of him loving, serving, leading \/ and the wife respecting him, submitting to him, and following him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that somehow, in God\u2019s design, we are reflecting Christ\u2019s relationship with His bride, the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sometimes, we get hung up on this because we want everything perfectly nailed down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This really is a mystery. We don\u2019t understand all of what\u2019s taking place here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re now free from having to respond to it or to submit to God\u2019s authority. The fact that you can\u2019t understand it doesn\u2019t mean, \u201cOh, well, if I can\u2019t figure it out, then I don\u2019t have to do it\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely! And I think one of the things I say, too, is that submission is no more beneath us than it is of the godhead. If Christ, who is fully God and fully deserving of all that entails\u2014being fully God\u2014submits to the Father, then why would we revolt against that? Why would we shake our fist and say: \u201cThat\u2019s not fair!\u201d Well, Christ submits to the Father, and that\u2019s a <em>beautiful<\/em> and glorious thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, wasn\u2019t there something that happened on your honeymoon that kind of brought this whole issue to the surface for you guys?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. I thought that I knew what it meant to be a godly wife and mother. Much like with being a mom, I feel that with each passing year, I know less about motherhood\u2014with each passing year, I know less about what it means to be a submissive and loving wife. [Laughter] But we were driving\u2014I believe we were in North Carolina. My husband has a love for finding stadiums, especially college campus stadiums. He wanted to find Duke\u2019s stadium. We were driving around and he thought: \u201cWell, we\u2019re just going to explore. We\u2019ll just go kind of follow the signs.\u201d I thought: \u201cOh, exploring. It sounds so wonderful. We\u2019re on our honeymoon.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we have very different definitions of exploring. I like structured exploring, which means we kind of know where we\u2019re going. He likes \u201cLet\u2019s just see where the wind takes us.\u201d I was hungry and it was getting later and later. My husband has a different definition of hunger\u2014he can let it just kind of linger for a long time. [Laughter] I\u2019m a very scheduled eater. We were driving, and we got lost. He still says we weren\u2019t lost, but we were lost in my opinion. We were just driving. I was so mad! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was not thinking about how we needed to eat! It was time to eat dinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you don\u2019t understand\u2014he was on a mission!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> He was on a mission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re exploring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you\u2019re starving to death, and he\u2019s on a mission; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes! And we had found Duke\u2019s campus\u2014we just couldn\u2019t find the stadium. Finally, we just were driving around and I was like: \u201cThis is ridiculous! You\u2019re not listening to me. I\u2019m hungry and I want to go.\u201d I tried to get out of the moving car because I was so mad at him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait! You what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I always threatened to, but I\u2019m too scared to really open the door. He kept locking the door\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re not getting out of the car.\u201d [Laughter] We both come from different family backgrounds\u2014so we both handle conflict differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> We are just different. He\u2019s not a real a go-getter with conflict. I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is my opinion, and I\u2019m going to tell you what it is right now!\u201d [Laughter] I really hurt his feelings; right?\u2014understandably. I freaked out on him about something that was so small. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of it was that we had different definitions of exploring. If we\u2019d just understood the definition of exploring, then\u2014and if I had just understood and not gotten so upset about it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, when you look back on that episode now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re sitting with a young wife, what counsel would you give her about what she should do if her husband is just kind of wandering around the roads and she\u2019s starving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, don\u2019t try to get out of a moving car!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> That\u2019s your first step. But I would just say that so much of the Christian life is a long-term view. I think, sometimes, we\u2019re\u2014especially now, we\u2019re surrounded by such good teaching on manhood and womanhood\u2014that, as men and women, we can really have a very high expectation of how our spouses are supposed to respond to things. I\u2019ve really learned that I was expecting my husband to be like someone who\u2019s been like 20\/30 years down the road, as a husband, as opposed to someone who, really, had only known me for about ten months and who had only been married to me for a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I look back at our marriage\u2014I mean, we haven\u2019t been married that long, but I look back\u2014and I see so much growth and change in both of us in how we have learned to adapt to each other and to appreciate the differences we have that are good\u2014and have really sharpened us, and made us more Christ-like, but also have made us just better people, I think, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, as you submit to him, I\u2019m not hearing that you become this wallflower\/\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, I hope not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014this doormat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You haven\u2019t lost your voice. He has given you voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Listens carefully\u2014usually; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s his assignment\u2014he has to live with you in an understanding way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, and that takes time too. I think that we have this expectation that our husbands are going to just be there immediately. It just takes time. Marriage is not easy; it doesn\u2019t just flow naturally from us because, if it did, then we wouldn\u2019t need to rely on Christ to sustain us and to give us the grace to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But don\u2019t you still want to be in charge?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, unfortunately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re really grinning big!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I do; I do! It\u2019s bad. [Laughter] One of the biggest ways we see that <em>now<\/em> is that we have twin boys, who are two. I can be a micromanager when it comes to their well-being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t view your responsibility, before God\u2014as being a wife, who\u2019s called to submit to her husband, and as one who is referred to in the Book of Genesis as \u201ca helper suitable\u201d for her husband\u2014you don\u2019t view that in a demeaning way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No! One of the things that is helpful about that passage is that it is \u201ca suitable helper\u201d for her husband. Everything that I possess\u2014that God has gifted me in\u2014is uniquely designed for <em>Daniel<\/em> and to make him into the man that God has called him to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways we saw this in our early marriage\u2014that took me a little bit to kind of come to terms with\u2014was because he doesn\u2019t like to write \/ he\u2019s a verbal processor. He\u2019s got to talk through the things he\u2019s learning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when he preaches \/ when he was writing a paper, he wanted to talk through <em>every<\/em> piece of the stuff he was studying. I would get so frustrated because I would be like: \u201cI\u2019m trying to read a book right now,\u201d \/ \u201cI\u2019m trying to watch a show. Why are you interrupting me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I finally started to see was\u2014my love for all things seminary, at the time, was given to me to be a help to Daniel as he was a student in seminary. Now, as he\u2019s a pastor, who preaches and has to work through difficult texts\u2014which I can\u2019t help with because I don\u2019t know Greek\u2014but as he\u2019s working through texts, and just thinking through writing, and how to craft a sentence, I can help him in that way. That\u2019s just one of the ways that God has created us to work well together. But I don\u2019t think, in any way, it\u2019s beneath me at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One last question: \u201cIf you and Daniel were chatting with a young couple, who were getting ready to get married and start out their marriage together, and they said, \u2018You know, this stuff about Ephesians 5\u2014about the man is supposed to be the lover, the leader, etc., and be the head of the home and this thing of a wife submitting to her husband\u2014we just think, contextually, that\u2019s for back then. Now, we\u2019ve found a better way. It\u2019s just both roles are equal.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWell, it says you are supposed to mutually submit. Doesn\u2019t it say that in the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> It does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo, how do you deal with that, Ms. Submissive?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, I think if mutual submission was the pattern for how men and women are supposed to submit to one another, then I don\u2019t think Paul would have gone on to clarify what that kind of looks like. We are called to submit to one another, as believers\u2014as people who are in a covenant relationship with God. As human beings, we are all called to submit\u2014so all of us are submitting to somebody. Submission is only offensive to people when they\u2019re talking about it in the husband\/wife relationship. I think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so offensive\u2014is because wives are like: \u201cWhy do I have to submit to my husband? It\u2019s unfair!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you submit to your boss, you submit to your pastor, as your children submit to you. No one would ever look at a child and say\u2014well, you shouldn\u2019t look at a child and say: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to submit to me. I\u2019ll submit to you.\u201d That\u2019s absurd! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think when we look at mutual submission, we\u2019re not doing away with gender roles as much as we\u2019re honoring, and loving, and submitting to one another, as believers in Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just a further thought on mutual submission\u2014if Ephesians, Chapter 5, had ended at verse 21\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and didn\u2019t have the rest of the chapter\u2014and didn\u2019t have other sections of the Bible that make it real clear\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is a distinct responsibility of a husband and a wife\u2014unique responsibilities, for each, that God spelled out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t\u2014I didn\u2019t create this. But if the Bible didn\u2019t have those passages, then we would be left to believe: \u201cHey, we just all submit to each other. There are no distinctives. It\u2019s all good.\u201d But the chapter doesn\u2019t end there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, it doesn\u2019t. And the rest of the Bible doesn\u2019t end there. From Genesis to Revelation, there\u2019s this pattern of the bride and Christ. Christ is always the head of the bride\u2014that was God\u2019s plan from the beginning. Even more than that, within the Trinity, there is no beginning and no end to the godhead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t really get to define that. We\u2019re the created\u2014God is the creator. He defines us\u2014we don\u2019t define Him. So, we\u2019re living out what it means to be created in His image. We don\u2019t suddenly get to rewrite the rules because our culture has shifted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, back to the question I asked you earlier\u2014if I was counseling a young engaged couple\u2014and that\u2019s basically what they said they were going to do: \u201cYou know, we\u2019re both going to share equally in all decisions. There is no one really responsible. We\u2019ll just agree.\u201d I looked at them and kind of smiled\u2014I said: \u201cYou know, I understand. I really do. There is a belief that is supported\u2014that is even taught within the Christian community\u2014but let\u2019s open the Bible and let\u2019s take a look because, what if her job results in her getting a promotion and getting transferred to another location?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at him and said, \u201cAnd you\u2019ve got a great job. It\u2019s going to mean you either move out of your great job or you live in two different cities or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow are you going to make that decision?\u201d I said, \u201cLet\u2019s just walk this through.\u201d I used a resource we have called <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em>. I just walked them through that and, hopefully, prepared them for the reality that I know they faced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to thank you, Courtney. You\u2019re a great thinker, and I\u2019m glad you\u2019re writing. I know there may be a season where you may not get to write as much as you <em>wish<\/em> you could because of some little mouths that demand to be fed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you are choosing a <em>tremendous<\/em> calling in being a wife and a mom. You said, \u201cNo, no!\u201d And now we\u2019re going to move right in to talk about submission; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re still not concerned about getting letters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m really not because we\u2019re going to talk about it in a very fair, honest, and, hopefully, compassionate and loving way\u2014but in a biblical way. We\u2019re going to talk about it with Courtney Reissig. Welcome back to the broadcast, Courtney.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Thanks for having me. It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Courtney is the author of a book called <em>The Accidental Feminist. <\/em>She is a pastor\u2019s wife, married to Daniel. In fact, that\u2019s how I want to start to get to this subject of submission. How did you and Daniel meet, and did he have any idea what he was getting when he got you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No! Well, yes and no. We met at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. I was a seminary student and so was he. We met through a friend, who met him on campus, and who said, \u201cYou should meet this guy!\u201d She was married, and she <em>loved<\/em> being a matchmaker. I was like, \u201cI\u2019m not meeting some guy!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we finally met. She orchestrated a way for us to meet, and then Daniel just took over from there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What attracted you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I just liked him. I liked talking to him, I thought he was cute, and we just kind of gravitated to each other. He was confident, but he wasn\u2019t proud. He just kind of carried himself in a way that I wanted to follow. I was intimidated by people who would get married really quickly. But for some reason, I found myself really drawn to him and was like, \u201cWell, if he wants to get married quickly, I guess that\u2019s fine.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember thinking, \u201cWhat is he doing to me?!\u201d Like on our first date, he kind of just said: \u201cI\u2019m not proposing to you, but I have a plan. We\u2019re not just dating for fun.\u201d I mean, we were 25 and 26\u2014we weren\u2019t like 19 and 20. We weren\u2019t fresh, new kids in college or something like that. He just laid out a plan\u2014like: \u201cI would love for this to end in marriage. If it doesn\u2019t, we\u2019ll know pretty quickly.\u201d I think the next day we hung out. We were watching a football game with one of his friends and then his friend left. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cWe need to leave. We\u2019re not going to stay here when no one\u2019s at my apartment,\u201d\u2014just real assertiveness\u2014kind of like, \u201cHe\u2019s kind of different than any other guy I\u2019ve dated.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Setting boundaries,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014defining the relationship\u2014taking it forward. So how did he ask you to marry him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, so, we met in September and went on our first date a few weeks later. Then, we got engaged in December\u2014a few months later\u2014and we got married in May.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So from September to May\u2014that was from start to finish?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, it was a done deal!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So take us to your premarital counseling because you had some issues come up during premarital counseling that were kind of fresh for you; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. We talked about submission. One of the questions they asked us with submission was, \u201cCourtney, what is your basis for submission?\u201d As I thought about it, my basis for submission was not the man that I was submitting to\u2014it wasn\u2019t Daniel. When Paul tells wives to submit to their husbands, it\u2019s \u201cas unto the Lord.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a better model of who we\u2019re submitting to than our husbands because our husbands are going to fail us. I\u2019m submitting to Daniel as I submit to Christ\u2014so I\u2019m submitting, ultimately, to Christ, who is Lord over my life but also Lord over his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when he\u2019s not the man he should be\u2014in the same way that I\u2019m not the woman I should be\u2014I\u2019m still called to submit to him. Obviously, if he\u2019s in sin, that\u2019s another ballgame. But for just the general, day-in\/day-out, I\u2019m married to a sinner. I\u2019m still called to submit to him because I\u2019m submitting, ultimately, to Christ and His Lordship over both of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t long after you married then\u2014he came to you with a decision that he was about to make that was going to test this theology of submission that you so beautifully described a few moments ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. We were both seminary students when we got married, and I <em>loved <\/em>seminary. I loved every bit of it\u2014I loved studying \/ I loved writing papers. We had my income from my job\u2014I had a pretty decent job at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was working part-time at the church and then part-time at McDonald\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. We couldn\u2019t afford for both of us to go to seminary. He\u2019s very wise with our finances, and he wasn\u2019t willing to let us go into debt to go to seminary. He knew that God was calling <em>him<\/em> to the ministry and that, as the man, was calling him to provide for his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe best choice for us was for <em>him<\/em> to do seminary and for me to drop out. At the time, he said, \u201cLet\u2019s try one class.\u201d Our first year we were married \/ the first semester, I took one class online. Even then, I was mad. I was: \u201cI just want to go to seminary. I want to do what you\u2019re doing.\u201d I thought he was against me, and I didn\u2019t understand why he wasn\u2019t letting me do what I wanted to do. I felt like I was letting people down who wanted to see me write and wanted to see me do things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSix months into being married, we were driving home from my parents\u2019 house. My parents live in Florida, and we were driving home at Christmas time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had been thinking about it and praying about it. He said, \u201cI love you; and I know how much you love seminary, but I just don\u2019t think we can swing it financially.\u201d The frustration in my heart that I had felt three, four, or five months earlier had, over time, had dissipated. It had really helped me to see that Daniel was <em>for<\/em> me. There were a number of times, in our first six months of marriage\u2014where he looked at me and said: \u201cI\u2019m <em>for<\/em> you. I\u2019m not against you. I believe in you. I just\u2014we can\u2019t afford it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like the Lord really worked in my heart by that point\u2014six months later\u2014to really see that God was using Daniel to protect us. For us, we needed for me to step back and not finish. I had to submit to his leadership in that regard and trust that what I wanted to do\u2014writing and ministry more full-time\u2014could come later; but, at the time, I needed to submit to his leadership in our life and trust what God would do with the outcome of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there would be those listeners\u2014as soon as you started telling that story and they saw where it was headed\u2014the back of their necks\u2014the hair would stand up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They go: \u201cWhy would you do that? Why did you submit to that?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, because I believe that God has called me to submit, I believe that it\u2019s the role He has given me as the wife to Daniel. I\u2019m called to submit to his leadership. Daniel will give Him an account for how he leads our family, and I\u2019ll give an account for how I submit to him and trust his leadership of us because, ultimately, it\u2019s trusting in God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not submitting to Daniel insomuch as I\u2019m submitting to him as though he\u2019s like my god. I\u2019m submitting to God and His ultimate authority over me and His ultimate <em>love<\/em> for me. He has given me Daniel to shape me and to sharpen me in the same way that I\u2019ve been given to Daniel to do the same thing. That is the role that He has given me, as his wife. I believe that I\u2019m submitting to God\u2019s ultimate authority over me and trusting that He\u2019s going to continue working.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What I hear you saying\u2014and I want you to affirm this because I don\u2019t want to put words in your mouth\u2014you believe\u2014from Ephesians, Chapter 5; from Colossians, Chapter 3; from 1 Peter, Chapter 3\u2014that wives are called to submit because their husbands have been placed in a position\u2014a structural position\u2014not one of value \/ but one of being responsible\u2014to give leadership to his wife and his family\u2014that you are called to follow that leadership; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely! And everything is pointing to an even greater reality\u2014like I say in the book, how we are image-bearers. We are imaging God and telling a <em>story<\/em> about Who God is. My role, as a wife who submits to her husband, is telling a greater story about God and His ultimate love and plan for the world. Within the godhead, we see submission and an authority structure. The Son submits to the Father and the Spirit submits to the Father. The Spirit was guiding the Son, as He was on this earth and was living out His role, as a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see all of these authority and submission structures in the godhead\u2014that\u2019s what it\u2019s ultimately pointing to. It\u2019s not this arbitrary thing that God said: \u201cThis sounds like a great idea! I\u2019m just going to make women submit to men.\u201d Everything in life is a metaphor, pointing to God\u2019s ultimate glory in His creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, there\u2019s nowhere in Scripture that we see any indication of the Father submitting to the Son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, and also it\u2019s pointing to the metaphor of how He has saved us. In Christ, we see the church is submitting to Christ. Christ came to redeem a bride for Himself. The church is submitting to Christ. Christ came, and died, and purchased us\u2014we are now His bride\u2014we are now in His family. Christ doesn\u2019t submit to the church, but the church <em>always <\/em>submits to Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Bible talks about this being a mystery\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014it\u2019s that a husband and wife together in this dance\u2014of him loving, serving, leading \/ and the wife respecting him, submitting to him, and following him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that somehow, in God\u2019s design, we are reflecting Christ\u2019s relationship with His bride, the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sometimes, we get hung up on this because we want everything perfectly nailed down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This really is a mystery. We don\u2019t understand all of what\u2019s taking place here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re now free from having to respond to it or to submit to God\u2019s authority. The fact that you can\u2019t understand it doesn\u2019t mean, \u201cOh, well, if I can\u2019t figure it out, then I don\u2019t have to do it\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely! And I think one of the things I say, too, is that submission is no more beneath us than it is of the godhead. If Christ, who is fully God and fully deserving of all that entails\u2014being fully God\u2014submits to the Father, then why would we revolt against that? Why would we shake our fist and say: \u201cThat\u2019s not fair!\u201d Well, Christ submits to the Father, and that\u2019s a <em>beautiful<\/em> and glorious thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, wasn\u2019t there something that happened on your honeymoon that kind of brought this whole issue to the surface for you guys?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes. I thought that I knew what it meant to be a godly wife and mother. Much like with being a mom, I feel that with each passing year, I know less about motherhood\u2014with each passing year, I know less about what it means to be a submissive and loving wife. [Laughter] But we were driving\u2014I believe we were in North Carolina. My husband has a love for finding stadiums, especially college campus stadiums. He wanted to find Duke\u2019s stadium. We were driving around and he thought: \u201cWell, we\u2019re just going to explore. We\u2019ll just go kind of follow the signs.\u201d I thought: \u201cOh, exploring. It sounds so wonderful. We\u2019re on our honeymoon.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we have very different definitions of exploring. I like structured exploring, which means we kind of know where we\u2019re going. He likes \u201cLet\u2019s just see where the wind takes us.\u201d I was hungry and it was getting later and later. My husband has a different definition of hunger\u2014he can let it just kind of linger for a long time. [Laughter] I\u2019m a very scheduled eater. We were driving, and we got lost. He still says we weren\u2019t lost, but we were lost in my opinion. We were just driving. I was so mad! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was not thinking about how we needed to eat! It was time to eat dinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you don\u2019t understand\u2014he was on a mission!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> He was on a mission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re exploring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you\u2019re starving to death, and he\u2019s on a mission; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes! And we had found Duke\u2019s campus\u2014we just couldn\u2019t find the stadium. Finally, we just were driving around and I was like: \u201cThis is ridiculous! You\u2019re not listening to me. I\u2019m hungry and I want to go.\u201d I tried to get out of the moving car because I was so mad at him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait! You what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I always threatened to, but I\u2019m too scared to really open the door. He kept locking the door\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re not getting out of the car.\u201d [Laughter] We both come from different family backgrounds\u2014so we both handle conflict differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> We are just different. He\u2019s not a real a go-getter with conflict. I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is my opinion, and I\u2019m going to tell you what it is right now!\u201d [Laughter] I really hurt his feelings; right?\u2014understandably. I freaked out on him about something that was so small. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of it was that we had different definitions of exploring. If we\u2019d just understood the definition of exploring, then\u2014and if I had just understood and not gotten so upset about it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, when you look back on that episode now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re sitting with a young wife, what counsel would you give her about what she should do if her husband is just kind of wandering around the roads and she\u2019s starving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, don\u2019t try to get out of a moving car!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> That\u2019s your first step. But I would just say that so much of the Christian life is a long-term view. I think, sometimes, we\u2019re\u2014especially now, we\u2019re surrounded by such good teaching on manhood and womanhood\u2014that, as men and women, we can really have a very high expectation of how our spouses are supposed to respond to things. I\u2019ve really learned that I was expecting my husband to be like someone who\u2019s been like 20\/30 years down the road, as a husband, as opposed to someone who, really, had only known me for about ten months and who had only been married to me for a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I look back at our marriage\u2014I mean, we haven\u2019t been married that long, but I look back\u2014and I see so much growth and change in both of us in how we have learned to adapt to each other and to appreciate the differences we have that are good\u2014and have really sharpened us, and made us more Christ-like, but also have made us just better people, I think, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, as you submit to him, I\u2019m not hearing that you become this wallflower\/\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, I hope not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014this doormat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You haven\u2019t lost your voice. He has given you voice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Listens carefully\u2014usually; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s his assignment\u2014he has to live with you in an understanding way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, and that takes time too. I think that we have this expectation that our husbands are going to just be there immediately. It just takes time. Marriage is not easy; it doesn\u2019t just flow naturally from us because, if it did, then we wouldn\u2019t need to rely on Christ to sustain us and to give us the grace to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But don\u2019t you still want to be in charge?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes, unfortunately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re really grinning big!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> I do; I do! It\u2019s bad. [Laughter] One of the biggest ways we see that <em>now<\/em> is that we have twin boys, who are two. I can be a micromanager when it comes to their well-being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t view your responsibility, before God\u2014as being a wife, who\u2019s called to submit to her husband, and as one who is referred to in the Book of Genesis as \u201ca helper suitable\u201d for her husband\u2014you don\u2019t view that in a demeaning way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No! One of the things that is helpful about that passage is that it is \u201ca suitable helper\u201d for her husband. Everything that I possess\u2014that God has gifted me in\u2014is uniquely designed for <em>Daniel<\/em> and to make him into the man that God has called him to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways we saw this in our early marriage\u2014that took me a little bit to kind of come to terms with\u2014was because he doesn\u2019t like to write \/ he\u2019s a verbal processor. He\u2019s got to talk through the things he\u2019s learning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when he preaches \/ when he was writing a paper, he wanted to talk through <em>every<\/em> piece of the stuff he was studying. I would get so frustrated because I would be like: \u201cI\u2019m trying to read a book right now,\u201d \/ \u201cI\u2019m trying to watch a show. Why are you interrupting me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I finally started to see was\u2014my love for all things seminary, at the time, was given to me to be a help to Daniel as he was a student in seminary. Now, as he\u2019s a pastor, who preaches and has to work through difficult texts\u2014which I can\u2019t help with because I don\u2019t know Greek\u2014but as he\u2019s working through texts, and just thinking through writing, and how to craft a sentence, I can help him in that way. That\u2019s just one of the ways that God has created us to work well together. But I don\u2019t think, in any way, it\u2019s beneath me at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One last question: \u201cIf you and Daniel were chatting with a young couple, who were getting ready to get married and start out their marriage together, and they said, \u2018You know, this stuff about Ephesians 5\u2014about the man is supposed to be the lover, the leader, etc., and be the head of the home and this thing of a wife submitting to her husband\u2014we just think, contextually, that\u2019s for back then. Now, we\u2019ve found a better way. It\u2019s just both roles are equal.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWell, it says you are supposed to mutually submit. Doesn\u2019t it say that in the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> It does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSo, how do you deal with that, Ms. Submissive?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Well, I think if mutual submission was the pattern for how men and women are supposed to submit to one another, then I don\u2019t think Paul would have gone on to clarify what that kind of looks like. We are called to submit to one another, as believers\u2014as people who are in a covenant relationship with God. As human beings, we are all called to submit\u2014so all of us are submitting to somebody. Submission is only offensive to people when they\u2019re talking about it in the husband\/wife relationship. I think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so offensive\u2014is because wives are like: \u201cWhy do I have to submit to my husband? It\u2019s unfair!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you submit to your boss, you submit to your pastor, as your children submit to you. No one would ever look at a child and say\u2014well, you shouldn\u2019t look at a child and say: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to submit to me. I\u2019ll submit to you.\u201d That\u2019s absurd! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think when we look at mutual submission, we\u2019re not doing away with gender roles as much as we\u2019re honoring, and loving, and submitting to one another, as believers in Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just a further thought on mutual submission\u2014if Ephesians, Chapter 5, had ended at verse 21\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and didn\u2019t have the rest of the chapter\u2014and didn\u2019t have other sections of the Bible that make it real clear\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is a distinct responsibility of a husband and a wife\u2014unique responsibilities, for each, that God spelled out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t\u2014I didn\u2019t create this. But if the Bible didn\u2019t have those passages, then we would be left to believe: \u201cHey, we just all submit to each other. There are no distinctives. It\u2019s all good.\u201d But the chapter doesn\u2019t end there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> No, it doesn\u2019t. And the rest of the Bible doesn\u2019t end there. From Genesis to Revelation, there\u2019s this pattern of the bride and Christ. Christ is always the head of the bride\u2014that was God\u2019s plan from the beginning. Even more than that, within the Trinity, there is no beginning and no end to the godhead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t really get to define that. We\u2019re the created\u2014God is the creator. He defines us\u2014we don\u2019t define Him. So, we\u2019re living out what it means to be created in His image. We don\u2019t suddenly get to rewrite the rules because our culture has shifted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, back to the question I asked you earlier\u2014if I was counseling a young engaged couple\u2014and that\u2019s basically what they said they were going to do: \u201cYou know, we\u2019re both going to share equally in all decisions. There is no one really responsible. We\u2019ll just agree.\u201d I looked at them and kind of smiled\u2014I said: \u201cYou know, I understand. I really do. There is a belief that is supported\u2014that is even taught within the Christian community\u2014but let\u2019s open the Bible and let\u2019s take a look because, what if her job results in her getting a promotion and getting transferred to another location?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at him and said, \u201cAnd you\u2019ve got a great job. It\u2019s going to mean you either move out of your great job or you live in two different cities or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow are you going to make that decision?\u201d I said, \u201cLet\u2019s just walk this through.\u201d I used a resource we have called <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em>. I just walked them through that and, hopefully, prepared them for the reality that I know they faced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to thank you, Courtney. You\u2019re a great thinker, and I\u2019m glad you\u2019re writing. I know there may be a season where you may not get to write as much as you <em>wish<\/em> you could because of some little mouths that demand to be fed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Courtney:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you are choosing a <em>tremendous<\/em> calling in being a wife and a mom.
