We know that now; but a lot of times, we\u2019ll look to a person, or a bottle, or pills, or alcohol, or something else to meet that void. We\u2019ll hear today from Clint and Penny Bragg about how idols in any marriage can lead to destruction. You know, most of the time, when couples face the kind of trauma that our guests this week have faced in their marriage, the marriage does not bounce back. But we\u2019re hearing a different kind of story this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right, Bob. In fact, Clint and Penny Bragg join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Clint\/Penny---welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I so enjoyed your story, and getting to know you guys, and just hearing about how your marriage starts like everybody else\u2019s---with a dream and airbrushed photography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Around the church and spiritual matters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then there came a time, early in the marriage---in the second year---is that right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Yes, we didn\u2019t even make it to the second-year mark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014where you began to give your heart to another person. It all started with your friend expressing an attraction to you. Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Definitely\u2014it did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seemed innocent, at the time. I mean, when you guys were becoming friends \/ getting to know one another, nothing seemed untoward; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> No, absolutely! As a matter of fact, I felt like: \u201cWow. This is an opportunity. This person isn\u2019t saved. This is an opportunity for me to share God with this person. Obviously, they\u2019re confused and they\u2019ve got some things going on. This is probably a little mission project that God has given me. I\u2019m going to go for it.\u201d I just started pouring all of my emphasis into that---not intentionally thinking, \u201cThis is going to lead somewhere where it shouldn\u2019t lead.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Clint, all of this is happening without you being aware? You were aware that there was a crack between the two of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes, there was. What happened is---it was over a period of months, I started sensing that there was something \u201cnot right.\u201d I started asking questions. And then, here\u2019s the thing that God did for me during that time\u2014Penny would say that she was in a certain place. I was in the glass business at that time. I would land up in a situation where she wasn\u2019t supposed to be, and she would be there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would ask her that night\u2014I\u2019d say: \u201cWell, sweetheart, where were you today? What did you do?\u201d All of that stuff. She didn\u2019t give me the answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> He knew because he had seen me. So, that pattern of deception, for me, started to kick in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> I would never say, \u201cBut I saw you there.\u201d About four or five times, over a two- or three-month period, that same thing kept happening. Then, finally, I confronted her: \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> You know\u2014Paul talks in the Word about being the \u201cvilest offender.\u201d I <em>felt<\/em> that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> I felt that I had taken a step that I could never take back\u2014that I could <em>never be forgiven<\/em>\u2014but bringing it to the light of Christ changed everything. Clint and I have learned, whatever the addiction is, those things have been wired in us from the Fall\u2014in our DNA from the Fall\u2014the tendency to want something to fill our needs when the only thing that can fill it is Jesus Christ. We know that now; but a lot of times, we\u2019ll look to a person, or a bottle, or pills, or alcohol, or something else to meet that void. It\u2019s a God-sized gap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, obviously, with what was happening with your marriage, you were headed to a point where something had to change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Clint gave me an ultimatum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> An ultimatum. In fact, every August\u2014or at the end of July\u2014our church used to go on this ski trip, where all of the families would go. There would be five or six ski boats, and we would ski for the weekend. I said to Penny\u2014I say: \u201cHey, listen. I\u2019m going to give you the weekend. You really need to think about this. You either need to pack your stuff and leave; or you need to stay here, and we can work on it. We can do whatever it takes to make this marriage work, but I want to not dictate to you what you need to do. I\u2019m going to let you have the weekend.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI came home from that weekend, and she had packed her bags and she was gone. I couldn\u2019t believe it! I mean, I couldn\u2019t wrap my brain around it. I just could not figure it out why she was attracted to this other person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I: \u201cOkay, Lord, I\u2019m going to take these steps. I\u2019m going to protect myself and make sure\u2026\u201d I didn\u2019t make it easy for Penny. I made her have to go the whole nine yards because I was still willing to welcome her back into our marriage and do whatever we needed to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when she got her first teaching job, I went to her apartment and I tried to persuade her. I called her, and it just didn\u2019t do any good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Clint, I just have to ask you, in the midst of your wife divorcing you, you had to feel hopeless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I really did. I was confused; but at the same time\u2014you know, a lot of times, when marriages break up, they get bitter at each other\u2014they fight, they say nasty things, they do all that\u2014that didn\u2019t happen between Penny and me. In fact, I was sad\u2014I never bad-mouthed her \/ I didn\u2019t go talking to the world about it\u2014I just went on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the beginning, what I did to mask the pain and the void in my heart\u2014I got really busy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school. I got a four-year degree in 29 months. I got a job in a K-8 Christian school. I went to school at night for a year. Then I finally got a job as a math teacher, a physical education teacher, a football coach, a track coach, and a golf coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All at once?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>All at once\u2014I was doing all that. I was going around the clock. I was a first-year teacher trying to get his curriculum together and all that stuff. I was busy. Halfway through that year, I still felt this void. I couldn\u2019t figure what was going on. What I did was\u2014I got my real estate license. I was selling real estate in between classes. I was making schedules, showings, and stuff like that. I still had that void in my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am still staying busy. I\u2019m not trying to think too much about Penny or anything like this. I was going to church, but I was just showing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were just filling up your life with whatever you could to stay away from the emotional anguish you were experiencing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Exactly! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen what happened is\u2014that still wasn\u2019t helping me out. I still had this pain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Like I said\u2014every now and then, I would go to God and I would say: \u201cMan! God, she was the love of my life. I don\u2019t know why this happened to us. You know, I know it is never going to get back together\u2014she\u2019s not going to want to get back together.\u201d What happened is\u2014I decided, \u201cWell, maybe if I get a fresh look at life\u2014move someplace away from here.\u201d I loaded everything I had, and I headed out to Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>From Northern California?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>From Northern California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s about as far as you can get. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Exactly. It is kind of like, you know, how Jonah went out there. [Laughter] He was [not] going to go where God told him to go. Well, I landed up there in St. Petersburg, Florida. I got into real estate investing. I went to all these seminar courses; and I figured: \u201cWell, I\u2019ll just get rich. That is all I need to do.\u201d In the first year, I figured out what they had taught me. I bought 20 houses in a year with no money down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened is\u2014I thought I was the genius \/ I thought I was the king\u2014I knew everything. By this time, now, I\u2019m not taking God with me anywhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened is\u2014a few months later\u2014you know, I told you I had bought 20 houses. Well, the first three, I flipped\u2014I rehabbed and flipped on my own and made some pretty good money\u2014but I still had 17 more mortgages to pay. They weren\u2019t rentable\u2014you know, not all of them were rentable\u2014I was having to come up with that money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLong story short is\u2014within about six months, my back was against the wall. Something inside of me says, \u201cClint, I thought you said, back in 1981 in Northwest Oklahoma, when you walked the aisle and said you would do anything and everything for Me because you devoted the rest of your life to Me.\u201d I say, \u201cI don\u2019t know who You are.\u201d That weekend, I found myself back in church for the first time in almost ten years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took three weeks for me to finally look up to God and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019ve been angry at You for ten years for the way that You took the love of my life away from me.\u201d In the next breath, I looked up to Him and apologized\u2014I said: \u201cI have no right to be mad at You. You had nothing to do with taking her away from me. It was my fault. I had a part in this. I apologize to You.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cNow, I am in a mess\u2014the biggest mess I have ever been in my life. I would be okay with the fact if You said You wouldn\u2019t help me. I would accept that, but I would still follow You. So, Lord, I am turning everything over to You. Do whatever You need to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were in a good place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Penny, you <em>weren\u2019t <\/em>in a good place at the same time; were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>Well, you know, it was close. I had risen to peak performance in my job and all those different things. You know, we see this a lot with couples today. Guys will bury the pain in their work, or a skill, or, like Clint, in coaching\u2014those kinds of things. A woman will bury the pain in a relationship. Clint and Penny had done those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just didn\u2019t know because, once we parted ways, it was like the Red Sea, Dennis. You know, he went his way and I went my way. We never saw each other again. We never talked to each other again. There wasn\u2019t email then yet\u2014so there was no contact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the west coast\u2014I am still in California\u2014God got a hold of my heart about nine years after our divorce. I got to the point where I finally admitted my sin to Him. At that point, the healing work of Christ began in my life. However, I had a mountain of consequences\u2014a mountain! They involved reconciling <em>all<\/em> the relationships that I had broken, especially my relationship with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Clint, I have to ask you\u2014in this ten-year period, I know you were filling up your life with work and with all kinds of options\u2014how come you weren\u2019t looking for somebody else?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> I just didn\u2019t want to get involved with somebody because she was still the love of my life. I didn\u2019t think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait a second!\u201411 years later?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m telling you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> With no contact in the midst of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, doesn\u2019t love begin to die at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Well, you know, the thing is\u2014she is the one that wanted the divorce. I didn\u2019t ever, ever think that she was going to be back in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was some words on a sheet of paper\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> \u2014that I kept writing to the Lord. I said: \u201cYou know, I know that she\u2019s the love of my life. I still do not understand why we\u2019re not together, but I understand it\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d So I would just keep moving on. About every six months, I would write the same thing over again. I would say: \u201cLord, why did this happen? Why did we get split up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, here it was\u201411 years later. I told you I crashed\u2014I apologized to Him and asked Him for help. He started pulling me out of my mess. Now, He didn\u2019t just snap His fingers and it was over and done with. It was a process that God wanted me to go through. As we were going through this process together, God and me, things started to go well for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m listening to the sermons\u2014I\u2019m applying it. I\u2019m going out and I\u2019m doing stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, I come home from a job; and in my mailbox was a letter. The letter was from Penny Bronzini\u2014that\u2019s her maiden name. I went into the house. I took that envelope\u2014I set it on the desk\u2014I looked at it. I said: \u201cGod, should I open this or not? Is this bad news? She\u2019s the love of my life. What does she want now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your last words with her had been around the divorce.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>That is exactly right.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>The day our divorce papers were notarized was the last time we ever saw each other\u2014in the parking lot of a bank.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Eleven years later, the mailbox has got a package. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Before you open the package, let me go back to you sending the package. Did you even know where he was?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>You know, I had searched for a while\u2014you know, I mentioned a mountain of consequences. God <em>really<\/em> placed the ministry of reconciliation in my heart\u2014deep-seated in my heart, at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI spent three years going back and reconciling every relationship I had broken when I left Clint, but I was scared todeath to contact him. I mean, I just thought: \u201cHe is going to blast me with anger. He has a right to be mad.\u201d\u2014you know, so on and so forth. I started to look for him, and I started to ask a few friends to look for him. One had found him in Florida but hit a dead-end. I kind of thought in my mind: \u201cWell, Lord, I guess I don\u2019t have to think about that one. Thank You!\u00a0 Whew!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \u201cI tried\u2014it\u2019s over!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>He let me know, \u201cNo, Penny, your friends tried; but did you really try?\u201d At that point, guys, I had fallen so in love with a Jesus I never met, as a young girl. I spent years just seeking after Him with my whole heart. At that point, I was willing to do whatever He wanted me to do to be obedient\u2014no shortcuts. I had taken shortcuts before, and they had all ended up on dead-ends, like Proverbs talks about\u2014and \u201cthe way that leads to death,\u201d\u2014I had taken those. I wanted the way that led to life. That is a very narrow way. I know what that means now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod required me to be vulnerable and make contact with Clint. I had written the letter after finally, myself, finding his address on a free people search website. That was in February of 2002. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, as you sat down to write that letter, did it take daysto write it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>It flowed\u2014it flowed like the Holy Spirit flowing out. The intent was true. I think it came across on the page to apologize, to ask for his forgiveness, and to let him know that I had done something wrong in our relationship. I wanted to give him the chance to ask questions about that, get it right, and have healing in his life and closure. That was the key thing\u2014I thought, \u201cThis will finally bring closure to my life and to his.\u201d\u00a0 When I sent it off in the mail, I felt a real sense of peace and that I had done all that God had asked me to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you aware that he had not remarried?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No. I was not aware of that. I had <em>no clue<\/em> because, again, we had had no contact. I hadn\u2019t followed him or anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was nohope of reconciliation. I mean, that was not my intent in writing it at all. It was just that I had never\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You wanted to be at peace, but you didn\u2019t have any thought that you could ever get back together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No way! Why would he want me back? You know, I mean ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you even entertain the idea that he might?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No way!\u2014that was the furthest thing\u2014you know they say, \u201cAs far as the east is from the west, [Laughter] God removes our sins\u201d? Well, also, I mean, just no way! Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Romans 12:17 and 18: \u201cNever be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.\u201d That\u2019s really what you were doing; wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> That\u2019s it. This was the last relationship\u2014\u2014the last one to do. So, I was completely at peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What about that letter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I was floored\u2014I mean, I just couldn\u2019t believe it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you weep?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe asked me several things. She asked me either to write a letter, email her, or give her a call. Well, I didn\u2019t write letters in those days; and I didn\u2019t have an email address\u2014so I called. There is a three-hour time difference between the east coast and west coast. So, when I called, she was in the middle of her work day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now wait a second. How long after you got the letter did you call? Did you call right away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I did\u2014I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to let her know that I got her letter.\u201d I called\u2014not thinking that she was in the middle of her workday. I called, and I get her answering machine. I said: \u201cThis is Clint. I got your letter. I\u2019m going to try you one more time at eight o\u2019clock, your time, tonight. If you are there, you are there. If you are not, you are not,\u201d and I hung up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>I came home from my job, as a principal. I am listening to message after message. The last message on my machine is that voice that I hadn\u2019t heard in 11 years. I couldn\u2019t believe it. That is exactly what he said\u2014I thought: \u201cLord, we are going all the way with this. I am not going to miss that phone call.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tClint was always a man of his word. I thought, \u201cIf he said he is calling straight up of eight, he is calling straight up of eight.\u201d Sure enough, he did. That conversation lasted <em>five hours<\/em>. We now refer to it as \u201cThe Grand Conversation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You asked him to forgive you in the letter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember his response?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>I do. He said, \u201cPenny, didn\u2019t you know I forgave you a long time ago?\u201d And I thought\u2014I even said: \u201cHow could you? How could you? I never asked.\u201d He said: \u201cBecause Jesus forgave me. I learned that during our time apart\u2014the depth of my sin on the cross\u2014that Christ forgave me. So, also, should I forgive you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from that letter and \u201cThe Grand Conversation\u201d until the two of you stood again before a minister and repeated vows that you understood differently this time than the first time?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>Six months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It was six months\u2014August 17, 2002. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> We were remarried. God wiped the slate clean and gave us a fresh start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what do you have to say to a couple who are listening or maybe a person in a marriage relationship who has lost hope?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> There is hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> There is hope for every hurting marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> And, you know, the biggest thing that we tell people: \u201cI don\u2019t care how dark your sin is. I don\u2019t care what you did\u2014how nasty it was \/ how wrong it was\u2014how everybody says, \u2018No, you can\u2019t do that and ever recover from it.\u2019 That\u2019s a lie. God is standing right there. He\u2019s just waiting for you to turn your eyes to Him and say: \u2018Father, I have sinned. I don\u2019t know if You can forgive me, but I ask for Your forgiveness.\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAs soon as you ask Him for forgiveness, you\u2019re forgiven, right then and there. But here\u2019s the deal\u2014as Penny said\u2014there are consequences. King David had consequences, you know. You just go through the Bible\u2014everybody that sinned\u2014there was a consequence, but He forgave them and He restored them better than they ever were before.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing for Penny and me\u2014we are saying: \u201cHey, don\u2019t quit! It\u2019s usually your pride that is getting in the way. You\u2019re the one who is being stubborn, who won\u2019t back down and say you\u2019re sorry and ask for forgiveness.\u201d You know, when she asked me for forgiveness, my heart melted\u2014in that letter. And when she said so over the phone, I said, \u201cYes, I forgave you a long time ago, Penny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> And I think the surprise\u2014and this is what we tell couples\u2014it wasn\u2019t just me that asked for forgiveness. What got me was Clint asked for forgiveness. I said: \u201cWell, I was the one who walked out. You know, the blame should be on me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cNo, Penny. I have learned so much about how I should have been a spiritual leader in our marriage\u2014about how I didn\u2019t allow emotional intimacy to be built and those kinds of things. It was both of us bringing that sin before the cross.\u201d That\u2019s what we see in the couples who successfully reconcile and begin the restoration process now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It\u2019s when both of them go vertically to the Lord first, individually, and say: \u201cChange my heart, God! Change my heart in this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> \u201cThen, let\u2019s see what can happen in the marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I just want to thank you both, Clint and Penny, for sharing your story. You are modeling a passage of Scripture that I have my Bible open to. It is in the book of 1 John, Chapter 1, verse 8: \u201cIf we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, you have modeled what is at the core of redemption\u2014turning to God, and the finished work on the cross, and confessing your shortcomings to God and to one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is how a relationship with God is established, and it is how great marriages thrive and continue to grow. We know that now; but a lot of times, we\u2019ll look to a person, or a bottle, or pills, or alcohol, or something else to meet that void. You know, most of the time, when couples face the kind of trauma that our guests this week have faced in their marriage, the marriage does not bounce back. But we\u2019re hearing a different kind of story this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right, Bob. In fact, Clint and Penny Bragg join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Clint\/Penny---welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I so enjoyed your story, and getting to know you guys, and just hearing about how your marriage starts like everybody else\u2019s---with a dream and airbrushed photography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Around the church and spiritual matters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then there came a time, early in the marriage---in the second year---is that right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Yes, we didn\u2019t even make it to the second-year mark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014where you began to give your heart to another person. It all started with your friend expressing an attraction to you. Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Definitely\u2014it did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seemed innocent, at the time. I mean, when you guys were becoming friends \/ getting to know one another, nothing seemed untoward; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> No, absolutely! As a matter of fact, I felt like: \u201cWow. This is an opportunity. This person isn\u2019t saved. This is an opportunity for me to share God with this person. Obviously, they\u2019re confused and they\u2019ve got some things going on. This is probably a little mission project that God has given me. I\u2019m going to go for it.\u201d I just started pouring all of my emphasis into that---not intentionally thinking, \u201cThis is going to lead somewhere where it shouldn\u2019t lead.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Clint, all of this is happening without you being aware? You were aware that there was a crack between the two of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes, there was. What happened is---it was over a period of months, I started sensing that there was something \u201cnot right.\u201d I started asking questions. And then, here\u2019s the thing that God did for me during that time\u2014Penny would say that she was in a certain place. I was in the glass business at that time. I would land up in a situation where she wasn\u2019t supposed to be, and she would be there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would ask her that night\u2014I\u2019d say: \u201cWell, sweetheart, where were you today? What did you do?\u201d All of that stuff. She didn\u2019t give me the answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> He knew because he had seen me. So, that pattern of deception, for me, started to kick in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> I would never say, \u201cBut I saw you there.\u201d About four or five times, over a two- or three-month period, that same thing kept happening. Then, finally, I confronted her: \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> You know\u2014Paul talks in the Word about being the \u201cvilest offender.\u201d I <em>felt<\/em> that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> I felt that I had taken a step that I could never take back\u2014that I could <em>never be forgiven<\/em>\u2014but bringing it to the light of Christ changed everything. Clint and I have learned, whatever the addiction is, those things have been wired in us from the Fall\u2014in our DNA from the Fall\u2014the tendency to want something to fill our needs when the only thing that can fill it is Jesus Christ. We know that now; but a lot of times, we\u2019ll look to a person, or a bottle, or pills, or alcohol, or something else to meet that void. It\u2019s a God-sized gap. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, obviously, with what was happening with your marriage, you were headed to a point where something had to change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> Clint gave me an ultimatum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> An ultimatum. In fact, every August\u2014or at the end of July\u2014our church used to go on this ski trip, where all of the families would go. There would be five or six ski boats, and we would ski for the weekend. I said to Penny\u2014I say: \u201cHey, listen. I\u2019m going to give you the weekend. You really need to think about this. You either need to pack your stuff and leave; or you need to stay here, and we can work on it. We can do whatever it takes to make this marriage work, but I want to not dictate to you what you need to do. I\u2019m going to let you have the weekend.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI came home from that weekend, and she had packed her bags and she was gone. I couldn\u2019t believe it! I mean, I couldn\u2019t wrap my brain around it. I just could not figure it out why she was attracted to this other person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I: \u201cOkay, Lord, I\u2019m going to take these steps. I\u2019m going to protect myself and make sure\u2026\u201d I didn\u2019t make it easy for Penny. I made her have to go the whole nine yards because I was still willing to welcome her back into our marriage and do whatever we needed to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when she got her first teaching job, I went to her apartment and I tried to persuade her. I called her, and it just didn\u2019t do any good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Clint, I just have to ask you, in the midst of your wife divorcing you, you had to feel hopeless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I really did. I was confused; but at the same time\u2014you know, a lot of times, when marriages break up, they get bitter at each other\u2014they fight, they say nasty things, they do all that\u2014that didn\u2019t happen between Penny and me. In fact, I was sad\u2014I never bad-mouthed her \/ I didn\u2019t go talking to the world about it\u2014I just went on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the beginning, what I did to mask the pain and the void in my heart\u2014I got really busy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school. I got a four-year degree in 29 months. I got a job in a K-8 Christian school. I went to school at night for a year. Then I finally got a job as a math teacher, a physical education teacher, a football coach, a track coach, and a golf coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All at once?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>All at once\u2014I was doing all that. I was going around the clock. I was a first-year teacher trying to get his curriculum together and all that stuff. I was busy. Halfway through that year, I still felt this void. I couldn\u2019t figure what was going on. What I did was\u2014I got my real estate license. I was selling real estate in between classes. I was making schedules, showings, and stuff like that. I still had that void in my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am still staying busy. I\u2019m not trying to think too much about Penny or anything like this. I was going to church, but I was just showing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were just filling up your life with whatever you could to stay away from the emotional anguish you were experiencing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Exactly! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen what happened is\u2014that still wasn\u2019t helping me out. I still had this pain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Like I said\u2014every now and then, I would go to God and I would say: \u201cMan! God, she was the love of my life. I don\u2019t know why this happened to us. You know, I know it is never going to get back together\u2014she\u2019s not going to want to get back together.\u201d What happened is\u2014I decided, \u201cWell, maybe if I get a fresh look at life\u2014move someplace away from here.\u201d I loaded everything I had, and I headed out to Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>From Northern California?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>From Northern California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s about as far as you can get. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Exactly. It is kind of like, you know, how Jonah went out there. [Laughter] He was [not] going to go where God told him to go. Well, I landed up there in St. Petersburg, Florida. I got into real estate investing. I went to all these seminar courses; and I figured: \u201cWell, I\u2019ll just get rich. That is all I need to do.\u201d In the first year, I figured out what they had taught me. I bought 20 houses in a year with no money down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened is\u2014I thought I was the genius \/ I thought I was the king\u2014I knew everything. By this time, now, I\u2019m not taking God with me anywhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened is\u2014a few months later\u2014you know, I told you I had bought 20 houses. Well, the first three, I flipped\u2014I rehabbed and flipped on my own and made some pretty good money\u2014but I still had 17 more mortgages to pay. They weren\u2019t rentable\u2014you know, not all of them were rentable\u2014I was having to come up with that money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLong story short is\u2014within about six months, my back was against the wall. Something inside of me says, \u201cClint, I thought you said, back in 1981 in Northwest Oklahoma, when you walked the aisle and said you would do anything and everything for Me because you devoted the rest of your life to Me.\u201d I say, \u201cI don\u2019t know who You are.\u201d That weekend, I found myself back in church for the first time in almost ten years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took three weeks for me to finally look up to God and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019ve been angry at You for ten years for the way that You took the love of my life away from me.\u201d In the next breath, I looked up to Him and apologized\u2014I said: \u201cI have no right to be mad at You. You had nothing to do with taking her away from me. It was my fault. I had a part in this. I apologize to You.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cNow, I am in a mess\u2014the biggest mess I have ever been in my life. I would be okay with the fact if You said You wouldn\u2019t help me. I would accept that, but I would still follow You. So, Lord, I am turning everything over to You. Do whatever You need to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were in a good place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Penny, you <em>weren\u2019t <\/em>in a good place at the same time; were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>Well, you know, it was close. I had risen to peak performance in my job and all those different things. You know, we see this a lot with couples today. Guys will bury the pain in their work, or a skill, or, like Clint, in coaching\u2014those kinds of things. A woman will bury the pain in a relationship. Clint and Penny had done those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just didn\u2019t know because, once we parted ways, it was like the Red Sea, Dennis. You know, he went his way and I went my way. We never saw each other again. We never talked to each other again. There wasn\u2019t email then yet\u2014so there was no contact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the west coast\u2014I am still in California\u2014God got a hold of my heart about nine years after our divorce. I got to the point where I finally admitted my sin to Him. At that point, the healing work of Christ began in my life. However, I had a mountain of consequences\u2014a mountain! They involved reconciling <em>all<\/em> the relationships that I had broken, especially my relationship with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Clint, I have to ask you\u2014in this ten-year period, I know you were filling up your life with work and with all kinds of options\u2014how come you weren\u2019t looking for somebody else?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> I just didn\u2019t want to get involved with somebody because she was still the love of my life. I didn\u2019t think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait a second!\u201411 years later?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m telling you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> With no contact in the midst of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, doesn\u2019t love begin to die at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Well, you know, the thing is\u2014she is the one that wanted the divorce. I didn\u2019t ever, ever think that she was going to be back in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was some words on a sheet of paper\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> \u2014that I kept writing to the Lord. I said: \u201cYou know, I know that she\u2019s the love of my life. I still do not understand why we\u2019re not together, but I understand it\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d So I would just keep moving on. About every six months, I would write the same thing over again. I would say: \u201cLord, why did this happen? Why did we get split up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, here it was\u201411 years later. I told you I crashed\u2014I apologized to Him and asked Him for help. He started pulling me out of my mess. Now, He didn\u2019t just snap His fingers and it was over and done with. It was a process that God wanted me to go through. As we were going through this process together, God and me, things started to go well for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m listening to the sermons\u2014I\u2019m applying it. I\u2019m going out and I\u2019m doing stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, I come home from a job; and in my mailbox was a letter. The letter was from Penny Bronzini\u2014that\u2019s her maiden name. I went into the house. I took that envelope\u2014I set it on the desk\u2014I looked at it. I said: \u201cGod, should I open this or not? Is this bad news? She\u2019s the love of my life. What does she want now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your last words with her had been around the divorce.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>That is exactly right.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>The day our divorce papers were notarized was the last time we ever saw each other\u2014in the parking lot of a bank.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Eleven years later, the mailbox has got a package. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Before you open the package, let me go back to you sending the package. Did you even know where he was?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>You know, I had searched for a while\u2014you know, I mentioned a mountain of consequences. God <em>really<\/em> placed the ministry of reconciliation in my heart\u2014deep-seated in my heart, at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI spent three years going back and reconciling every relationship I had broken when I left Clint, but I was scared todeath to contact him. I mean, I just thought: \u201cHe is going to blast me with anger. He has a right to be mad.\u201d\u2014you know, so on and so forth. I started to look for him, and I started to ask a few friends to look for him. One had found him in Florida but hit a dead-end. I kind of thought in my mind: \u201cWell, Lord, I guess I don\u2019t have to think about that one. Thank You!\u00a0 Whew!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \u201cI tried\u2014it\u2019s over!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>He let me know, \u201cNo, Penny, your friends tried; but did you really try?\u201d At that point, guys, I had fallen so in love with a Jesus I never met, as a young girl. I spent years just seeking after Him with my whole heart. At that point, I was willing to do whatever He wanted me to do to be obedient\u2014no shortcuts. I had taken shortcuts before, and they had all ended up on dead-ends, like Proverbs talks about\u2014and \u201cthe way that leads to death,\u201d\u2014I had taken those. I wanted the way that led to life. That is a very narrow way. I know what that means now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod required me to be vulnerable and make contact with Clint. I had written the letter after finally, myself, finding his address on a free people search website. That was in February of 2002. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, as you sat down to write that letter, did it take daysto write it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>It flowed\u2014it flowed like the Holy Spirit flowing out. The intent was true. I think it came across on the page to apologize, to ask for his forgiveness, and to let him know that I had done something wrong in our relationship. I wanted to give him the chance to ask questions about that, get it right, and have healing in his life and closure. That was the key thing\u2014I thought, \u201cThis will finally bring closure to my life and to his.\u201d\u00a0 When I sent it off in the mail, I felt a real sense of peace and that I had done all that God had asked me to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you aware that he had not remarried?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No. I was not aware of that. I had <em>no clue<\/em> because, again, we had had no contact. I hadn\u2019t followed him or anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was nohope of reconciliation. I mean, that was not my intent in writing it at all. It was just that I had never\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You wanted to be at peace, but you didn\u2019t have any thought that you could ever get back together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No way! Why would he want me back? You know, I mean ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you even entertain the idea that he might?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>No way!\u2014that was the furthest thing\u2014you know they say, \u201cAs far as the east is from the west, [Laughter] God removes our sins\u201d? Well, also, I mean, just no way! Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Romans 12:17 and 18: \u201cNever be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.\u201d That\u2019s really what you were doing; wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> That\u2019s it. This was the last relationship\u2014\u2014the last one to do. So, I was completely at peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What about that letter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I was floored\u2014I mean, I just couldn\u2019t believe it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you weep?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe asked me several things. She asked me either to write a letter, email her, or give her a call. Well, I didn\u2019t write letters in those days; and I didn\u2019t have an email address\u2014so I called. There is a three-hour time difference between the east coast and west coast. So, when I called, she was in the middle of her work day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now wait a second. How long after you got the letter did you call? Did you call right away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>I did\u2014I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to let her know that I got her letter.\u201d I called\u2014not thinking that she was in the middle of her workday. I called, and I get her answering machine. I said: \u201cThis is Clint. I got your letter. I\u2019m going to try you one more time at eight o\u2019clock, your time, tonight. If you are there, you are there. If you are not, you are not,\u201d and I hung up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>I came home from my job, as a principal. I am listening to message after message. The last message on my machine is that voice that I hadn\u2019t heard in 11 years. I couldn\u2019t believe it. That is exactly what he said\u2014I thought: \u201cLord, we are going all the way with this. I am not going to miss that phone call.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tClint was always a man of his word. I thought, \u201cIf he said he is calling straight up of eight, he is calling straight up of eight.\u201d Sure enough, he did. That conversation lasted <em>five hours<\/em>. We now refer to it as \u201cThe Grand Conversation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You asked him to forgive you in the letter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember his response?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>I do. He said, \u201cPenny, didn\u2019t you know I forgave you a long time ago?\u201d And I thought\u2014I even said: \u201cHow could you? How could you? I never asked.\u201d He said: \u201cBecause Jesus forgave me. I learned that during our time apart\u2014the depth of my sin on the cross\u2014that Christ forgave me. So, also, should I forgive you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long from that letter and \u201cThe Grand Conversation\u201d until the two of you stood again before a minister and repeated vows that you understood differently this time than the first time?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny: <\/strong>Six months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It was six months\u2014August 17, 2002. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> We were remarried. God wiped the slate clean and gave us a fresh start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Yes, He did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what do you have to say to a couple who are listening or maybe a person in a marriage relationship who has lost hope?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> There is hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> There is hope for every hurting marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> And, you know, the biggest thing that we tell people: \u201cI don\u2019t care how dark your sin is. I don\u2019t care what you did\u2014how nasty it was \/ how wrong it was\u2014how everybody says, \u2018No, you can\u2019t do that and ever recover from it.\u2019 That\u2019s a lie. God is standing right there. He\u2019s just waiting for you to turn your eyes to Him and say: \u2018Father, I have sinned. I don\u2019t know if You can forgive me, but I ask for Your forgiveness.\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAs soon as you ask Him for forgiveness, you\u2019re forgiven, right then and there. But here\u2019s the deal\u2014as Penny said\u2014there are consequences. King David had consequences, you know. You just go through the Bible\u2014everybody that sinned\u2014there was a consequence, but He forgave them and He restored them better than they ever were before.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing for Penny and me\u2014we are saying: \u201cHey, don\u2019t quit! It\u2019s usually your pride that is getting in the way. You\u2019re the one who is being stubborn, who won\u2019t back down and say you\u2019re sorry and ask for forgiveness.\u201d You know, when she asked me for forgiveness, my heart melted\u2014in that letter. And when she said so over the phone, I said, \u201cYes, I forgave you a long time ago, Penny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> And I think the surprise\u2014and this is what we tell couples\u2014it wasn\u2019t just me that asked for forgiveness. What got me was Clint asked for forgiveness. I said: \u201cWell, I was the one who walked out. You know, the blame should be on me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cNo, Penny. I have learned so much about how I should have been a spiritual leader in our marriage\u2014about how I didn\u2019t allow emotional intimacy to be built and those kinds of things. It was both of us bringing that sin before the cross.\u201d That\u2019s what we see in the couples who successfully reconcile and begin the restoration process now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> It\u2019s when both of them go vertically to the Lord first, individually, and say: \u201cChange my heart, God! Change my heart in this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Penny:<\/strong> \u201cThen, let\u2019s see what can happen in the marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I just want to thank you both, Clint and Penny, for sharing your story. You are modeling a passage of Scripture that I have my Bible open to. It is in the book of 1 John, Chapter 1, verse 8: \u201cIf we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, you have modeled what is at the core of redemption\u2014turning to God, and the finished work on the cross, and confessing your shortcomings to God and to one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clint:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is how a relationship with God is established, and it is how great marriages thrive and continue to grow.
