My dad hung the chalkboard for me behind a desk; and I would draw the map of the United States on it so that, if I needed to, I could jump up and do the weathercast while I was playing \u201canchor.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I just was fascinated with television and with broadcasting. I just\u2014there was never any doubt in my mind that that was what I wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 8<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll hear today what happened to Sandy Calwell\u2019s dream when she fell in love, got married, and had a baby. You know, there are a lot of times in your marriage and in your family when you face a fork in the road. You look at the fork and you say, \u201cBoth of these are good options.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s a tough call because you look at the options and go, \u201cThere\u2019s some really good stuff about option A and some really good stuff about option B.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to know how to break the tie. You\u2019ve faced some of those situations; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have. And our guests today on the broadcast\u2014one of the things she writes in her book is that \u201cLife is made up of thousands of steps, thousands of decisions; but there are some that are really determinative.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, like you just said, Bob, major forks in the road. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSandy Calwell, along with her husband Ken, joins us on the broadcast. Sandy, Ken\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sandy has written a book called <em>What if Parenting <\/em>Is <em>the Most Important Job in the World? <\/em>I like the title, Bob, because it\u2019s not an in-your-face title. It is a question that needs to be pondered today, I think, by many.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSandy, for a number of years, was in the broadcast television industry. She made a heroic decision to be able to step out of that to become a mom. We\u2019ll hear more about that in a moment. She is a full-time wife and mom today, a part-time author, speaker, and tennis enthusiast. She and her husband Ken live in the Portland area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think you\u2019ve done a wonderful job here. I want you to take us all the way back to when you were climbing the corporate ladder\u2014I believe it was in Dallas, Texas; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>The last opportunity was Dallas; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. What was going on in your life?\u00a0 What did your work history look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, prior to that, I had worked at a different affiliate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014TV stations\u2014mostly in Wichita, Kansas, at that point. We were newly-married. We had just moved to Dallas and looking for work. I had thrown my r\u00e9sum\u00e9 out to a variety of different places. It had landed on the desk of one gentleman that I had met at the ABC affiliate there. He didn\u2019t have an opportunity for me at that time, but he and I stayed in contact. You know, we were, like I said, newly-married and just getting settled in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say here\u2014because some of our listeners might not realize this\u2014but getting a job in TV in Wichita is one thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Getting a job in TV in <em>Dallas<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s a whole other ball game; yes, indeed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can say, \u201cI did TV in Wichita,\u201d and they go, \u201cSo\u2014\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, for you to\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>By the way, Bob, we have a lot of listeners in Wichita. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wichita is a great town\u2014I love Wichita\u2014but I\u2019m just saying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you had moved from the minors into the majors when you are starting to shop your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 around in a city like Dallas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019d met this guy at the ABC affiliate. He said, \u201cBoy, I wish we had something; but we don\u2019t.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still shopping around, trying to decide\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Still shopping around and, at the time, I had taken a job kind of just to fill in for someone while they were on pregnancy leave so I could, at least, be in the medium and continue to work. I did that, but I remember clearly the day that I got the call that I was waiting on\u2014and it was him. He goes, \u201cAre you ready to come to work for me?\u201d\u00a0 What he didn\u2019t know is that I had just found out that week that I was pregnant. Ken and I had already decided\u00a0 that, if we were blessed enough to have that happen to us, that I was going to give it all I had to try to step away and be a full-time mom. I struggled with that decision, even as we decided to do that. It was still a struggle, internally, with me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But you talked about this before you became pregnant\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, we had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I mean, as a couple. Had you talked about it, Ken, when you dated, or later on after you were married?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They didn\u2019t date long enough to talk about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That is true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>We only dated about three months or so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know\u2014real quickly, share with our listeners the mandate you gave this young lady. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was an invitation\u2014it was an invitation to get married, but it was really interesting because it made me feel good. I was in a dating relationship with Barbara for six weeks, asked her to marry me, and I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get married six weeks later.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say, for our listeners, you\u2019d known Barbara for\u2014how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, so, it\u2019s not like\u2014six weeks, you meet her; and two months later, you\u2019re married\u2014okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s true. But in terms of a lifetime commitment and a romantic relationship, it was pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was pretty compact.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you met Sandy, Ken, when she stepped forward and said, \u201cI want to be a new member,\u201d at the church you were attending in Wichita; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. I was at a church in Wichita, and Sandy came in to become a new member. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw the new members all stand up in front of the church. I saw her and it was, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cNew member; huh?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Liking those new members!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I started stalking her immediately. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>He did, actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s a whole other story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did he do that, though, Sandy?\u00a0 How did he come after you?\u00a0 Church visitation\u2014is that what he did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, actually, it started out with a rose and a note on my car.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, an anonymous note and a rose on my car. This proceeded over a period of weeks\u2014where week two was two roses; week three was three roses; week four was four\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you didn\u2019t know where it was coming from?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>No. No, I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait, wait. That\u2019s a little creepy. Can we just\u2014I mean, Ken, I\u2019m saying\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThere\u2019s some romance in that. That\u2019s nice, but\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t creepy, though. It was sweet\u2014it was just sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>So, here\u2019s the thing. I\u2019m like\u2014for about six weeks, I put one rose on her car and a note; then, two roses; then, three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, by the sixth week, I put six roses and a note.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And still haven\u2019t signed your name?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Still didn\u2019t sign my name.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, it just says, \u201cKen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>It just says, \u201cKen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t\u2014she just didn\u2019t know who it was from. So, she goes, in that sixth week, while I\u2019m putting those six roses on her car\u2014unbeknownst to me\u2014her friend\u2019s out in the parking lot with her camera\u2014big zoom camera\u2014and taking pictures of me, all the way across the parking lot, without me knowing\u2014follows me home, gets my license plate number. They go\u2014so, they know my home \/ they know my car. They know who I am. She\u2014you guys went and ran the tags.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s what we were going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>But we looked up your address and found out what your name was\u2014it was Ken Calwell. Later that day\u2014it was on a Sunday\u2014later that day, she goes, \u201cYou know, it has just occurred to me that I have actually met Ken Calwell. In fact, I\u2019ve done a story on Ken Calwell. I interviewed him. It\u2019s such an amazing story that I kept it on my master reel and I still have it.\u201d\u00a0 We went to the station and\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what?!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014watched the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You women\u2014you women are really amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Pretty\u2014yes\u2014pretty devious here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unbelievable!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, what was the amazing story about Ken Calwell?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a whole other broadcast there; but Ken has been through a life-transforming accident, actually. He was a triathlete\u2014he really should tell the story, not me\u2014but he was a triathlete that was hit, head-on on his bicycle, while he was training one morning, and suffered nearly life-threatening injuries\u2014multiple broken bones. It was just horrific.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer story was that a year later he participated in a triathlon with two other disabled athletes\u2014one of these\u2014the gentleman he was riding with that day. He did the swim portion of the triathlon\u2014it was a team triathlon\u2014and he swam with one arm because only one arm was working at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>She was just so inspired by him that truly\u2014that had been, what, three years before\u2014she kept it on a master reel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019re watching this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of this triathlete\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I\u2019m watching this story of this guy, and she goes, \u201cDo you know this guy?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019ve never met him. I don\u2019t\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>At this point, I\u2019ve got like stitches and swollen face and stuff. So, the first time she sees her husband, I\u2019m pretty messed up\u2014hard to recognize me, probably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Did you call him and say, \u201cI\u2019ve found you out!\u201d?\u00a0 How did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t. I kind of just stalked him back a bit because she said, \u201cWell, you know, if he\u2019s in Wichita\u2014when I interviewed him, he worked for Pizza Hut corporate.\u201d\u00a0 Pizza Hut, at that time, was still in Wichita\u2014that\u2019s where it started. She says, \u201cYou know, we know what his car looks like and his license tag\u2014he probably still works out there.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went running out to Pizza Hut corporate. I stick my business card on his windshield\u2014that says, \u201cGotcha!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I come out of work that night at 5:00, and I\u2019m walking out the parking lot with a buddy of mine. I walk over to the windshield, I pull up the windshield wiper, and I pull out this business card\u2014Sandy Totten\u2014her name then\u2014Sandy Totten. On the back, it says, \u201cKen, Gotcha!\u00a0 Your next move\u2014Sandy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, all of a sudden, I feel very violated!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong><em>You <\/em>feel violated!?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I felt very violated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>The prey has turned on the hunter!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>The prey has turned on the hunter, exactly!\u00a0 I\u2019m going, \u201cWhat in the world!?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause what you\u2019re thinking is, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 She knows my name. She knows my car. She knows where I work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, and he hasn\u2019t given me anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cShe knows everything about me that I\u2019ve known about her!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I went to the police station the next day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes, I did; but what I did\u2014to do, actually, was\u2014I wanted a ticket. All I wanted was a blank ticket because I had this idea that I would take this blank ticket\u2014I would make it up\u2014put false charges on there and put it on her windshield. That was my idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went to the police officer. I go and spend the whole next day, at work, changing the ticket into this\u2014put false charges on it. I put all these horrible charges like: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTrespassing on Pizza Hut property without intent to buy a pizza,\u201d and all of this stuff\u2014I put that on there. I put these horrible penalties \/ these really bad penalties\u2014and I say, \u201cChoose one of them.\u201d\u00a0 They were really horrible ones, but there was one on there that said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cDinner with me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Well, \u201cMeet me at church next Sunday.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ahhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was a safe one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I put that on her car\u2014took it across town and put it on her windshield. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>So, I go to church\u2014I stand there, and I\u2019m waiting for him to show up. It\u2019s well into the service, and he is not sitting around me or standing around me. I\u2019m thinking that I might have been stood up at church, which might be the ultimate insult. [Laughter] Anyway, through the course of the service, they do the introductions of \u201cStop and say, \u2018Hello,\u2019 to everyone around you.\u201d I knew he wasn\u2019t sitting directly around me; but during that time, he comes waltzing up the center aisle, offers me his hand, and says, \u201cHi, I\u2019m Ken Calwell.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cYes, I know.\u201d\u00a0 All I remember is just these giant blue eyes. I just got a lock on these big, blue eyes and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The rest is history\u2014 right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014the rest is history!\u00a0 There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask you\u2014going back, before you met Ken, growing up\u2014were you growing up, thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to take the world by storm\u201d?\u00a0 I mean, was your ladder propped up against a career wall as you were growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That was forefront on your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, I mean, even as a little girl, I had\u2014my dad hung the chalkboard, for me, behind a desk; and I would draw the map of the United States on it so that if I needed to, I could jump up and do the weathercast while I was playing \u201canchor.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I would sit there and read the news out of the newspaper\u2014had all my dolls out in front of me. I just was fascinated with television and with broadcasting. I was just\u2014there was never any doubt in my mind that that was what I wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was marriage and family on your radar?\u00a0 I mean, was that in the picture?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Not initially, no. I mean, I was just really focused on just trying to get through college and get my first internship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just loved it immediately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, when you met him at church, what happened at that point?\u00a0 I mean, you looked at the blue eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I looked at the blue eyes, yes. I was between jobs, at that time, actually. The Lord really hit me at a very opportune time because it gave us a lot of flexibility. It was interesting\u2014right after we got engaged, Ken\u2019s house got struck by lightning and burned to the ground\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014which was no small thing to manage. It ended up being a real blessing that I wasn\u2019t working at the time because I could just step right in and help him navigate that because it ended up being a lot of work\u2014and I had these 90 days to plan a wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, yes, we skipped over that part!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, we got right to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell everybody\u2014about three months\u2014why did you decide <em>together <\/em>that you could get married in 90 days?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Well, when I asked her to marry me, we were talking about it; and she said, \u201cWell, when do you want to get married?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, right away!\u00a0 This is it!\u00a0 I\u2019ve found the one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>That\u2019s the way Ken kind of runs things. He just doesn\u2019t want to waste time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes, exactly. I don\u2019t want to waste time\u2014\u201cLet\u2019s get married.\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cYou mean like next year?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, in the next few months, let\u2019s get married.\u201d\u00a0 She goes: \u201cWell, it takes time to plan a wedding. It\u2019s going to take longer than that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell,\u201d\u2014we had just\u2014I had been working on a new product at Pizza Hut called \u201cStuffed Crust Pizza.\u201d\u00a0 We created the product, tested it, and launched it in about 90 days. The real sensitive thing I said, at that point, was\u2014[Laughter]\u2014in the most sensitive, warm, loving voice, I said: \u201cWell, Honey, you can create, and test, and launch a new product in 90 days. Surely, we can plan a wedding in 90 days!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>To which you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Ken has always been very hard to argue with. So, you just kind of go with it.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You should have said, \u201cLook, send the marketing team over to my house because I\u2019ll need every bit of them to get this wedding planned!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I was so tickled that he had asked me in the first place that I thought, \u201cWell, I had better jump on this before he changes his mind.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you talk, during the engagement period, about dreams for family?\u00a0 Did you talk about how many kids you would like to have?\u00a0 Did you talk about career?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>We did. I mean, Ken\u2014to his credit\u2014I was raised in a Christian home, and I was a believer; but one of the big pivot points in my life, for sure, was meeting Ken because one of the very first things he bought me was a Bible. I had a Bible\u2014I just didn\u2019t read the Bible. He bought me a NIV Life Application Bible and a Bible study. It may very well have been one of yours, Dennis, I\u2019m not sure\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t remember. We started doing devotions, right away, which was completely new to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought: \u201cOkay, this is\u2014wow!\u00a0 This is really\u2014this is really a priority for him.\u201d\u00a0 It really pulled out a lot of great questions to talk about. I suspect that it was during one of those studies that we really started to delve into what were our ideas of family: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do we envision that?\u201d and \u201cWhat were our plans for that kind of thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Those are incredibly important discussions to have, prior to getting married, and then, as you begin your marriage and family. Did you guys come to a firm conviction, at that point, or did it take a while to hammer out what was going to happen if you did have children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I think we talked\u2014just as you said, I think we talked about it through the devotions some. I\u2019d like to say that we had that all really firm and all perfectly planned before\u2014I don\u2019t think so. I think we talked about it, but probably didn\u2019t take it all the way to the goal line. We talked around it and about it. Family was important to both of us, a Christian home, and those things\u2014but in terms of what we would do when Sandy got pregnant, that was probably a little later, after we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You knew that the woman you had proposed to had these stars in her eyes\u2014that she wanted to be the top-billing salesperson at the number-one station \/ TV station in town and be a media champion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDid you think, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what life\u2019s going to be for us,\u201d or did you think, \u201cWell, she\u2019ll get over that\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014that\u2019s a great question because I think I very much trusted God. It\u2019s strange to say this\u2014but from the moment I saw her and in our time dating \/ our short time dating, God made it clear to me, in so many ways, that she was\u2014He had her for me. I knew she was it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Oh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re getting emotional about it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>[Emotion in voice] I did. He had made that clear\u2014from my accident\u2014coming back from that and how trustworthy He had been through all of that and how gracious He had been to me and just the gifts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when she came along, I just was like, \u201cShe\u2019s the one!\u201d\u00a0 I knew that. I just trusted Him\u2014trusted God\u2014that if we were obedient, prayed about it, and trusted in Him, He was going to make it clear over time. I was kind of patient about that. I felt like I really knew her, you know?\u00a0 I felt like I really knew her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, you did know me. I mean, we did this premarital test with our church. I think Ken came into it, knowing full-well what I was all about\u2014like he said, just trusting that the Lord was going to lead us in that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Back to your question, Dennis\u2014I wish I could say that we had\u2014because I agree with you\u2014I agree that having that discussion beforehand is very important. We did have the discussion; but I don\u2019t think I took it all the way to a close, if you will. I felt like we had talked about it, and I felt like I knew her heart. I trusted that where we both were in our journeys with the Lord that He was going to lead us the right place. We just had to be patient with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say\u2014it\u2019s not that you have to have everything buttoned down before you walk up and say, \u201cI do,\u201d because you didn\u2019t have everything buttoned down\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we didn\u2019t have everything buttoned down\u2014but you do need to know, \u201cWhat are the core values of the person you\u2019re marrying\u2014what\u2019s really important?\u201d\u00a0 You ought to have some commonality in those areas before you stand in front of one another and say, \u201cThe two are becoming one\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I think there are three commitments that ought to be in place: First of all, to Jesus Christ and upward growth in the journey of following Him. Secondly\u2014and I\u2019ve heard you both mention it as we\u2019ve talked here\u2014a commitment to each other, where you don\u2019t know what the future holds, but you\u2019re committed to one another. Then, third, just a commitment to work through the process of hammering out those core values \/ your decisions, as a couple, because oneness is oh-so-important when it comes to decisions like this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of marriages that go through some very deep waters, where the husband and the wife do not agree around children\u2014how many to have \/ how to discipline them\u2014around career issues, either for the husband or for the wife or mom. Those are a set-up for deep division and, ultimately, to give the enemy an opportunity in the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And not everybody is going to come to the same conclusion that Ken and Sandy ultimately came to with regard to employment and how that\u2019s going to be handled; but you do have to wrestle with where are job and family\u2014how are those going to come together for the two of you; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I mentioned this at the beginning of the broadcast. My dad hung the chalkboard for me behind a desk; and I would draw the map of the United States on it so that, if I needed to, I could jump up and do the weathercast while I was playing \u201canchor.\u201d\u00a0 You know, I just was fascinated with television and with broadcasting. You know, there are a lot of times in your marriage and in your family when you face a fork in the road. You look at the fork and you say, \u201cBoth of these are good options.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s a tough call because you look at the options and go, \u201cThere\u2019s some really good stuff about option A and some really good stuff about option B.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to know how to break the tie. You\u2019ve faced some of those situations; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have. And our guests today on the broadcast\u2014one of the things she writes in her book is that \u201cLife is made up of thousands of steps, thousands of decisions; but there are some that are really determinative.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, like you just said, Bob, major forks in the road. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSandy Calwell, along with her husband Ken, joins us on the broadcast. Sandy, Ken\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sandy has written a book called <em>What if Parenting <\/em>Is <em>the Most Important Job in the World? <\/em>I like the title, Bob, because it\u2019s not an in-your-face title. It is a question that needs to be pondered today, I think, by many.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSandy, for a number of years, was in the broadcast television industry. She made a heroic decision to be able to step out of that to become a mom. We\u2019ll hear more about that in a moment. She is a full-time wife and mom today, a part-time author, speaker, and tennis enthusiast. She and her husband Ken live in the Portland area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think you\u2019ve done a wonderful job here. I want you to take us all the way back to when you were climbing the corporate ladder\u2014I believe it was in Dallas, Texas; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>The last opportunity was Dallas; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. What was going on in your life?\u00a0 What did your work history look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, prior to that, I had worked at a different affiliate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014TV stations\u2014mostly in Wichita, Kansas, at that point. We were newly-married. We had just moved to Dallas and looking for work. I had thrown my r\u00e9sum\u00e9 out to a variety of different places. It had landed on the desk of one gentleman that I had met at the ABC affiliate there. He didn\u2019t have an opportunity for me at that time, but he and I stayed in contact. You know, we were, like I said, newly-married and just getting settled in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say here\u2014because some of our listeners might not realize this\u2014but getting a job in TV in Wichita is one thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Getting a job in TV in <em>Dallas<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s a whole other ball game; yes, indeed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can say, \u201cI did TV in Wichita,\u201d and they go, \u201cSo\u2014\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, for you to\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>By the way, Bob, we have a lot of listeners in Wichita. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wichita is a great town\u2014I love Wichita\u2014but I\u2019m just saying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you had moved from the minors into the majors when you are starting to shop your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 around in a city like Dallas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019d met this guy at the ABC affiliate. He said, \u201cBoy, I wish we had something; but we don\u2019t.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still shopping around, trying to decide\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Still shopping around and, at the time, I had taken a job kind of just to fill in for someone while they were on pregnancy leave so I could, at least, be in the medium and continue to work. I did that, but I remember clearly the day that I got the call that I was waiting on\u2014and it was him. He goes, \u201cAre you ready to come to work for me?\u201d\u00a0 What he didn\u2019t know is that I had just found out that week that I was pregnant. Ken and I had already decided\u00a0 that, if we were blessed enough to have that happen to us, that I was going to give it all I had to try to step away and be a full-time mom. I struggled with that decision, even as we decided to do that. It was still a struggle, internally, with me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But you talked about this before you became pregnant\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, we had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I mean, as a couple. Had you talked about it, Ken, when you dated, or later on after you were married?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They didn\u2019t date long enough to talk about it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That is true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>We only dated about three months or so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know\u2014real quickly, share with our listeners the mandate you gave this young lady. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was an invitation\u2014it was an invitation to get married, but it was really interesting because it made me feel good. I was in a dating relationship with Barbara for six weeks, asked her to marry me, and I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get married six weeks later.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say, for our listeners, you\u2019d known Barbara for\u2014how many years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, so, it\u2019s not like\u2014six weeks, you meet her; and two months later, you\u2019re married\u2014okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s true. But in terms of a lifetime commitment and a romantic relationship, it was pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was pretty compact.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was pretty quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you met Sandy, Ken, when she stepped forward and said, \u201cI want to be a new member,\u201d at the church you were attending in Wichita; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. I was at a church in Wichita, and Sandy came in to become a new member. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw the new members all stand up in front of the church. I saw her and it was, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cNew member; huh?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Liking those new members!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I started stalking her immediately. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>He did, actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s a whole other story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did he do that, though, Sandy?\u00a0 How did he come after you?\u00a0 Church visitation\u2014is that what he did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, actually, it started out with a rose and a note on my car.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, an anonymous note and a rose on my car. This proceeded over a period of weeks\u2014where week two was two roses; week three was three roses; week four was four\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you didn\u2019t know where it was coming from?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>No. No, I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait, wait. That\u2019s a little creepy. Can we just\u2014I mean, Ken, I\u2019m saying\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThere\u2019s some romance in that. That\u2019s nice, but\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t creepy, though. I\u2019m like\u2014for about six weeks, I put one rose on her car and a note; then, two roses; then, three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, by the sixth week, I put six roses and a note.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And still haven\u2019t signed your name?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Still didn\u2019t sign my name.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, it just says, \u201cKen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>It just says, \u201cKen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t\u2014she just didn\u2019t know who it was from. So, she goes, in that sixth week, while I\u2019m putting those six roses on her car\u2014unbeknownst to me\u2014her friend\u2019s out in the parking lot with her camera\u2014big zoom camera\u2014and taking pictures of me, all the way across the parking lot, without me knowing\u2014follows me home, gets my license plate number. They go\u2014so, they know my home \/ they know my car. They know who I am. She\u2014you guys went and ran the tags.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s what we were going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>But we looked up your address and found out what your name was\u2014it was Ken Calwell. Later that day\u2014it was on a Sunday\u2014later that day, she goes, \u201cYou know, it has just occurred to me that I have actually met Ken Calwell. In fact, I\u2019ve done a story on Ken Calwell. I interviewed him. It\u2019s such an amazing story that I kept it on my master reel and I still have it.\u201d\u00a0 We went to the station and\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what?!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014watched the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You women\u2014you women are really amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Pretty\u2014yes\u2014pretty devious here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unbelievable!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, what was the amazing story about Ken Calwell?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a whole other broadcast there; but Ken has been through a life-transforming accident, actually. He was a triathlete\u2014he really should tell the story, not me\u2014but he was a triathlete that was hit, head-on on his bicycle, while he was training one morning, and suffered nearly life-threatening injuries\u2014multiple broken bones. It was just horrific.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer story was that a year later he participated in a triathlon with two other disabled athletes\u2014one of these\u2014the gentleman he was riding with that day. He did the swim portion of the triathlon\u2014it was a team triathlon\u2014and he swam with one arm because only one arm was working at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>She was just so inspired by him that truly\u2014that had been, what, three years before\u2014she kept it on a master reel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019re watching this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of this triathlete\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I\u2019m watching this story of this guy, and she goes, \u201cDo you know this guy?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019ve never met him. I don\u2019t\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>At this point, I\u2019ve got like stitches and swollen face and stuff. So, the first time she sees her husband, I\u2019m pretty messed up\u2014hard to recognize me, probably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Did you call him and say, \u201cI\u2019ve found you out!\u201d?\u00a0 How did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t. I kind of just stalked him back a bit because she said, \u201cWell, you know, if he\u2019s in Wichita\u2014when I interviewed him, he worked for Pizza Hut corporate.\u201d\u00a0 Pizza Hut, at that time, was still in Wichita\u2014that\u2019s where it started. She says, \u201cYou know, we know what his car looks like and his license tag\u2014he probably still works out there.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went running out to Pizza Hut corporate. I stick my business card on his windshield\u2014that says, \u201cGotcha!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I come out of work that night at 5:00, and I\u2019m walking out the parking lot with a buddy of mine. I walk over to the windshield, I pull up the windshield wiper, and I pull out this business card\u2014Sandy Totten\u2014her name then\u2014Sandy Totten. On the back, it says, \u201cKen, Gotcha!\u00a0 Your next move\u2014Sandy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, all of a sudden, I feel very violated!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong><em>You <\/em>feel violated!?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I felt very violated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>The prey has turned on the hunter!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>The prey has turned on the hunter, exactly!\u00a0 I\u2019m going, \u201cWhat in the world!?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause what you\u2019re thinking is, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 She knows my name. She knows my car. She knows where I work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, and he hasn\u2019t given me anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cShe knows everything about me that I\u2019ve known about her!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I went to the police station the next day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes, I did; but what I did\u2014to do, actually, was\u2014I wanted a ticket. All I wanted was a blank ticket because I had this idea that I would take this blank ticket\u2014I would make it up\u2014put false charges on there and put it on her windshield. That was my idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went to the police officer. I go and spend the whole next day, at work, changing the ticket into this\u2014put false charges on it. I put all these horrible charges like: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTrespassing on Pizza Hut property without intent to buy a pizza,\u201d and all of this stuff\u2014I put that on there. I put these horrible penalties \/ these really bad penalties\u2014and I say, \u201cChoose one of them.\u201d\u00a0 They were really horrible ones, but there was one on there that said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cDinner with me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Well, \u201cMeet me at church next Sunday.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ahhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was a safe one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I put that on her car\u2014took it across town and put it on her windshield. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>So, I go to church\u2014I stand there, and I\u2019m waiting for him to show up. It\u2019s well into the service, and he is not sitting around me or standing around me. I\u2019m thinking that I might have been stood up at church, which might be the ultimate insult. [Laughter] Anyway, through the course of the service, they do the introductions of \u201cStop and say, \u2018Hello,\u2019 to everyone around you.\u201d I knew he wasn\u2019t sitting directly around me; but during that time, he comes waltzing up the center aisle, offers me his hand, and says, \u201cHi, I\u2019m Ken Calwell.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cYes, I know.\u201d\u00a0 All I remember is just these giant blue eyes. I just got a lock on these big, blue eyes and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The rest is history\u2014 right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014the rest is history!\u00a0 There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask you\u2014going back, before you met Ken, growing up\u2014were you growing up, thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to take the world by storm\u201d?\u00a0 I mean, was your ladder propped up against a career wall as you were growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That was forefront on your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, I mean, even as a little girl, I had\u2014my dad hung the chalkboard, for me, behind a desk; and I would draw the map of the United States on it so that if I needed to, I could jump up and do the weathercast while I was playing \u201canchor.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I would sit there and read the news out of the newspaper\u2014had all my dolls out in front of me. I just was fascinated with television and with broadcasting. I was just\u2014there was never any doubt in my mind that that was what I wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was marriage and family on your radar?\u00a0 I mean, was that in the picture?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Not initially, no. I mean, I was just really focused on just trying to get through college and get my first internship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just loved it immediately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, when you met him at church, what happened at that point?\u00a0 I mean, you looked at the blue eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I looked at the blue eyes, yes. I was between jobs, at that time, actually. The Lord really hit me at a very opportune time because it gave us a lot of flexibility. It was interesting\u2014right after we got engaged, Ken\u2019s house got struck by lightning and burned to the ground\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>\u2014which was no small thing to manage. It ended up being a real blessing that I wasn\u2019t working at the time because I could just step right in and help him navigate that because it ended up being a lot of work\u2014and I had these 90 days to plan a wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, yes, we skipped over that part!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Yes, we got right to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell everybody\u2014about three months\u2014why did you decide <em>together <\/em>that you could get married in 90 days?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Well, when I asked her to marry me, we were talking about it; and she said, \u201cWell, when do you want to get married?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, right away!\u00a0 This is it!\u00a0 I\u2019ve found the one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>That\u2019s the way Ken kind of runs things. He just doesn\u2019t want to waste time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Yes, exactly. I don\u2019t want to waste time\u2014\u201cLet\u2019s get married.\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cYou mean like next year?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, in the next few months, let\u2019s get married.\u201d\u00a0 She goes: \u201cWell, it takes time to plan a wedding. It\u2019s going to take longer than that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell,\u201d\u2014we had just\u2014I had been working on a new product at Pizza Hut called \u201cStuffed Crust Pizza.\u201d\u00a0 We created the product, tested it, and launched it in about 90 days. The real sensitive thing I said, at that point, was\u2014[Laughter]\u2014in the most sensitive, warm, loving voice, I said: \u201cWell, Honey, you can create, and test, and launch a new product in 90 days. Surely, we can plan a wedding in 90 days!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>To which you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Ken has always been very hard to argue with. So, you just kind of go with it.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You should have said, \u201cLook, send the marketing team over to my house because I\u2019ll need every bit of them to get this wedding planned!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>I was so tickled that he had asked me in the first place that I thought, \u201cWell, I had better jump on this before he changes his mind.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you talk, during the engagement period, about dreams for family?\u00a0 Did you talk about how many kids you would like to have?\u00a0 Did you talk about career?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>We did. I mean, Ken\u2014to his credit\u2014I was raised in a Christian home, and I was a believer; but one of the big pivot points in my life, for sure, was meeting Ken because one of the very first things he bought me was a Bible. I had a Bible\u2014I just didn\u2019t read the Bible. He bought me a NIV Life Application Bible and a Bible study. It may very well have been one of yours, Dennis, I\u2019m not sure\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t remember. We started doing devotions, right away, which was completely new to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought: \u201cOkay, this is\u2014wow!\u00a0 This is really\u2014this is really a priority for him.\u201d\u00a0 It really pulled out a lot of great questions to talk about. I suspect that it was during one of those studies that we really started to delve into what were our ideas of family: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do we envision that?\u201d and \u201cWhat were our plans for that kind of thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Those are incredibly important discussions to have, prior to getting married, and then, as you begin your marriage and family. Did you guys come to a firm conviction, at that point, or did it take a while to hammer out what was going to happen if you did have children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>I think we talked\u2014just as you said, I think we talked about it through the devotions some. I\u2019d like to say that we had that all really firm and all perfectly planned before\u2014I don\u2019t think so. I think we talked about it, but probably didn\u2019t take it all the way to the goal line. We talked around it and about it. Family was important to both of us, a Christian home, and those things\u2014but in terms of what we would do when Sandy got pregnant, that was probably a little later, after we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You knew that the woman you had proposed to had these stars in her eyes\u2014that she wanted to be the top-billing salesperson at the number-one station \/ TV station in town and be a media champion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDid you think, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what life\u2019s going to be for us,\u201d or did you think, \u201cWell, she\u2019ll get over that\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014that\u2019s a great question because I think I very much trusted God. It\u2019s strange to say this\u2014but from the moment I saw her and in our time dating \/ our short time dating, God made it clear to me, in so many ways, that she was\u2014He had her for me. I knew she was it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Oh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re getting emotional about it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>[Emotion in voice] I did. He had made that clear\u2014from my accident\u2014coming back from that and how trustworthy He had been through all of that and how gracious He had been to me and just the gifts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when she came along, I just was like, \u201cShe\u2019s the one!\u201d\u00a0 I knew that. I just trusted Him\u2014trusted God\u2014that if we were obedient, prayed about it, and trusted in Him, He was going to make it clear over time. I was kind of patient about that. I felt like I really knew her, you know?\u00a0 I felt like I really knew her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sandy: <\/strong>Well, you did know me. I mean, we did this premarital test with our church. I think Ken came into it, knowing full-well what I was all about\u2014like he said, just trusting that the Lord was going to lead us in that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken: <\/strong>Back to your question, Dennis\u2014I wish I could say that we had\u2014because I agree with you\u2014I agree that having that discussion beforehand is very important. We did have the discussion; but I don\u2019t think I took it all the way to a close, if you will. I felt like we had talked about it, and I felt like I knew her heart. I trusted that where we both were in our journeys with the Lord that He was going to lead us the right place. We just had to be patient with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let me just say\u2014it\u2019s not that you have to have everything buttoned down before you walk up and say, \u201cI do,\u201d because you didn\u2019t have everything buttoned down\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we didn\u2019t have everything buttoned down\u2014but you do need to know, \u201cWhat are the core values of the person you\u2019re marrying\u2014what\u2019s really important?\u201d\u00a0 You ought to have some commonality in those areas before you stand in front of one another and say, \u201cThe two are becoming one\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I think there are three commitments that ought to be in place: First of all, to Jesus Christ and upward growth in the journey of following Him. Secondly\u2014and I\u2019ve heard you both mention it as we\u2019ve talked here\u2014a commitment to each other, where you don\u2019t know what the future holds, but you\u2019re committed to one another. Then, third, just a commitment to work through the process of hammering out those core values \/ your decisions, as a couple, because oneness is oh-so-important when it comes to decisions like this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of marriages that go through some very deep waters, where the husband and the wife do not agree around children\u2014how many to have \/ how to discipline them\u2014around career issues, either for the husband or for the wife or mom. Those are a set-up for deep division and, ultimately, to give the enemy an opportunity in the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And not everybody is going to come to the same conclusion that Ken and Sandy ultimately came to with regard to employment and how that\u2019s going to be handled; but you do have to wrestle with where are job and family\u2014how are those going to come together for the two of you; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I mentioned this at the beginning of the broadcast. I really like how Sandy has written this book\u2014even the title is a question, <em>What if Parenting Is the Most Important Job in the World?<\/em>\u00a0 It\u2019s not an in-your-face book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is, I think, an appeal to think through, to process, to discuss, to reason together, as a couple. I think that\u2019s fair to ask of any couple, regardless of your conclusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors\u2014that\u2019s what the Bible says.
