We\u2019ll spend time today with Dr. Tony Evans, talking about how the church can be the church in our culture today. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve heard you\u2014for years\u2014quote a sociologist from Harvard who, back in the 1940s or 1950s, looked at the things that cause a civilization to crumble \/ to decay. You look at his conclusions, from the 1940s and 1950s\u2014and you lay them against our culture today\u2014and you do wonder, \u201cWill America, 50 years from today, still exist as a powerful civilization in our world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. The author\u2019s name was Dr. Carle Zimmerman. He wrote a book called <em>Family and Civilization<\/em>. He traced all the great civilizations in history and tracked what happened to the families as that civilization crumbled and fell apart. He described three phases. Clearly, we\u2019re in the third phase as America\u2014as an empire\u2014I think is seeing the erosion of some its most fundamental elements. Our faith is at the core of all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have not merely a pastor joining us, but a fellow graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong><em>The<\/em>\u2014<em>The <\/em>Dallas\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a little pun for my friends at\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014at Ohio State?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, no! <em>The <\/em>Southern Baptist Seminary!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, got you! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Dr. Tony Evans joins us again. Tony, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad to be with you, always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Tony\u2019s a pastor\u2014has been for more than four decades at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas\/Fort Worth. He has his own radio program called <em>The Alternative<\/em> that is heard in more than a thousand communities across the country and 130 countries around the world. He\u2019s written a book called <em>America: Turning a Nation to God<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTony, you begin the book by talking about a woman by the name of Flory Evans. I don\u2019t know that I\u2019d ever heard the story. Share that with our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, Flo\u2014as she was known, as a 14-year-old young lady, at the turn of the century \/ the 1900s, around 1904\/1905\u2014who stood up in a church gathering and who proclaimed her faith very loudly. For some reason, it ignited a fire in that church, which was picked up by a pastor, who then led what became known as the Welsh Revival\u2014where over 100,000 people came to faith in Christ, starting with that young lady\u2019s public declaration of her faith in Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI open that up to say that what that young lady did that started that revival is what we need to do today because only a revival, where God enters into this fray, can have circumstances in this nation turn around. We only have two options: the return of Jesus Christ, which solves it for us, as believers; or an invasion by Jesus Christ that so ignites His people that it changes the trajectory of the nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you think we\u2019ve seen a revival in our lifetime? Do you think what happened in the late \u201960s and the early \u201970s with the Jesus Movement\u2014was that a revival in our nation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No. It wasn\u2019t a revival because you had pockets; but in terms of a national revival, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve not seen that in a lifetime\u2014I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve seen it in the twentieth century, and now we\u2019re in the twenty-first century\u2014not like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you think we can?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely because the whole point of a revival is to re-engage God into the life of His people, and then from His people into the life of the culture. What people do not understand\u2014spiritually and theologically, which I try to point out in the book\u2014is that we are now experiencing the passive wrath of God. Second Chronicles, Chapter 15, verses 3-6, says, \u201cIn those days there was no true God, no teaching priests, so there was no law.\u201d It says, \u201cCitizen rose up against citizen, city rose up against city, and nation rose up against nation,\u201d\u2014and then it closes with this phrase\u2014\u201cfor God troubled them with every kind of distress.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if God is your problem, only God is your solution. If God is your problem, it doesn\u2019t matter whom you elect. Politics can\u2019t solve this if God is your problem. God is our problem\u2014and because God has been offended because we put Him on the loop \/ we sprinkle a little Jesus on it to make it sound good\u2014but decision-making excludes Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are now undergoing the passive\u2014fire and brimstone\u2019s not coming down\u2014that\u2019s the active wrath of God. It\u2019s where God removes Himself and lets you have the consequences of your choices to leave Him out\u2014that\u2019s what we\u2019re experiencing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Isaiah 59 talks about how \u201crighteousness stands afar,\u201d\u2014at a distance\u2014\u201cand truth has stumbled in the street.\u201d The picture is\u2014truth is kind of flat-down on its face in the street. It says, as a result, instead of us conquering evil, evil is preying upon us. Describe for our listeners what you see, as a pastor, in terms of evil preying on our children \/ our grandchildren, and even on us in this culture. How serious a situation are we in here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s start with the loss of values. There was a time when the Christian worldview, even if you weren\u2019t a Christian, dominated the environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople wanted that worldview reflected in the character of people. But now, with secular media, now with values clarification, now with the redefinition of the family, all of that has eroded\u2014that Judeo-Christian worldview that we were dependent upon. As our founders said, and said so accurately, this republic is dependent upon a virtuous people; and that if we are not a virtuous people, this democracy cannot stand. We have lost or are losing our virtue. So, we\u2019re losing our country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is no longer an agreed-upon moral basis\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014from which democracy can flourish.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The definition of truth is: \u201cAn absolute standard by which reality is measured.\u201d We now live in a relativistic society, where truth is whatever I deem it to be at any given moment. So, you can have conflicting truths all over the place\u2014so therefore, conflicting definitions \/ so therefore, conflicting implementations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are experiencing that\u2014as a culture \/ in the family\u2014even in our churches\u2014who don\u2019t stand \/ many of them who no longer stand for God\u2019s standards. We have invited the world into the church rather than the church going into the world. Everything is going away from God, and we are imploding within.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re pastor of a church of over 10,000 people in Dallas, Texas. You have to see what\u2019s happening in the family, up close and personal. How important is it that our country is now tampering with what God designed in the beginning? In the book of Genesis, He made it really clear: \u201cMale and female, created He them,\u201d and He called them to become one. He was the One who designed marriage, not man. Comment on the importance of this new redefinition of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>This new redefinition of marriage is the nail in the coffin\u2014because\u00a0 once you redefine marriage and, therefore, redefine the family and, therefore, raise a generation of children, who are now being raised to believe this is a legitimate option\u2014then what you have done is redefined society. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat people don\u2019t understand is that to redefine marriage other than what God created is to attack God because male and female were created in His image\u2014not male and male \/ not female and female\u2014it was male and female. So, you no longer have the full expression of God\u2019s image. If you no longer have the full expression of God\u2019s image, you have another god. If you have another god, then you have chaos because there\u2019s only one true God. To attack marriage is to attack God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, but what about the folks who are saying: \u201cLet the church define marriage the way the church wants to define it, and let the culture define it a different way. We can\u2019t impose our morality on people who don\u2019t bow to our God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, first of all, what they do not understand is Romans 13\u2014and that is\u2014even governments were instituted by God. So, the closer a government is to God, the more orderly the society will be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe further a government is from God, the more disorderly the society will become. Marriage was not just created for Christians \/ marriage was created for the human race.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, a society that follows God\u2019s design, even though they may not follow Him, will benefit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely. It\u2019s like non-Christians who get married but use God\u2019s principles in their marriage. Even though they\u2019re not Christians, they can benefit from the principles because they\u2019re applying them as best they can in that relationship\u2014the same thing to a culture and to a country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Given where we are today \/ given the movement away from a biblical understanding of marriage to this more broad, open, inclusive idea, do you really\u2014I\u2019m trying to imagine a time in our country, other than Prohibition, when we took a step over the line and said, \u201cOh, we better pull that back.\u201d Can you imagine that we would step in, five years from now, and say: \u201cOh, we have it wrong\u2014we need to go back to one man and one woman. Those of you, who are married gay couples\u2014you\u2019re going to have to break things up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, that will be very tough to do. We have to fight it now in every way we can, in love, because we still have to treat people with dignity\/with respect. We still have to have a loving spirit about us, but we don\u2019t have to compromise the principle to do it in love. The principle is non-negotiable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And those folks, who look at this and say: \u201cTony, you of all people understand civil rights issues. This is a civil rights issue because it involves discrimination against gay people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, it involves discrimination against sin. We are told to discriminate against sin. When you discriminate against sin, that\u2019s righteous discrimination\u2014all discrimination is not illegitimate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You speak, in your book, how this is like an alarm clock. God has an alarm clock, and it\u2019s time to wake up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. When my alarm clock goes off, it\u2019s disturbing my sleep. I have two options\u2014I can turn it off and go back to sleep, or I can pay attention to it and get up. The only reason I set it is for it to disturb my sleep.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God shakes things up\u2014Hebrews, Chapter 12, says, when He shakes things up, it is to re-introduce His Kingdom. God is now shaking things up\u2014He\u2019s allowing the culture to go crazy\u2014and it is the alarm for Christians to wake up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And there are a lot of God\u2019s people, who are looking at this issue and going, \u201cMaybe the Bible\u2014maybe we\u2019ve just misunderstood some of these verses, and maybe they should be re-interpreted.\u201d There does seem to be\u2014I\u2019m wondering if, at your church, do you have Christians coming up and, \u201cI\u2019m not so sure that homosexuality is wrong\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Not if they\u2019ve been there for a minute\u2014[Laughter]\u2014if they\u2019ve been there for a minute, it has been inexplicably made <em>clear<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019d be time for a session with him. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u2014what God has to say. Yes, it\u2019d be time for a session. [Laughter] We make it clear but, at the same time, we do it in love\u2014we say: \u201cIf you struggle in this area, okay. That\u2019s what the church is for\u2014we\u2019re hospitals\u2014sick people are welcome\u2014you know: \u201cWe\u2019re here to heal you. We\u2019re to help. We\u2019re here to correct \/ we\u2019re here to guide. But don\u2019t ask us to tell God He\u2019s wrong. \u2018Let God be true and every man a liar.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, what people don\u2019t understand is\u2014unless you call sin what God calls sin, even God can\u2019t help you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So\u2014here we are, as a country. Some are calling sin what is truly sin, but a number of folks haven\u2019t paid attention to the alarm clock. They\u2019re still slumbering. What do they need to do; and what do those need to do, who have awakened and are really troubled? You know, I talk to a lot of people, Tony, and so do you\u2014who are talking about: \u201cCan you believe this?\u201d \u201cCan you believe that?\u201d \u201cWhat about this?\u201d \u201cDid you hear this story?\u201d At some point, we have to stop wallowing in how we are losing the battle and find a way to engage\u2014freshly, with love, as you said \/ with truth, as the Bible commands us to\u2014but be about redeeming and proclaiming the gospel of redemption to a broken nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, everybody else is coming out of the closet; so we might as well come out too. Everybody else is going public; so we must go public too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe church is not just for inside the walls. A mist in the pulpit is a fog in the pew unless the pastors take the lead in equipping the saints to do the work of the ministry, outside of the sanctuary, so that there is this collective public presence that speaks the truth of the Word of God in an uncompromising way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason why marriage is being defined by a small group of people is because they\u2019re unified. Their message is the same \/ their activism is the same, and they\u2019re not compromising. They\u2019re not shutting down. We are wallowing back\u2014we do not have a collective presence, saying: \u201cThis is what God says. This is what God means. We want to love you in moving you in that direction.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s something else taking place, too, though. There are a lot of people afraid, Tony. There are a lot of people afraid to speak up because: \u201cIf I speak up, it could cost me my job.\u201d \u201cIf I speak up, it could cost me my relationships.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s where a clear understanding of discipleship has to be communicated because Jesus says, \u201cI want you to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking up for Christ isn\u2019t always the most pleasant place to be. Yes, there is risk. It\u2019s called the risk of faith. So, who are you going to trust? Are you going to trust man, or are you going to trust God? If you are obeying God and you\u2019re doing it in love; then God is responsible for the result, not you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You gather your church together once a year for an event\u2014you call it\u2014it\u2019s a solemn assembly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It\u2019s a solemn assembly \/ a sacred gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain to folks what a solemn assembly is and how that\u2019s different than just a Sunday night church service.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>A solemn assembly is a sacred gathering. It\u2019s usually combined fasting and prayer, where you give up a craving of the physical in order to gain a deeper presence of the spiritual. We invite our whole congregation, over that week, to give up something that matters to them for something spiritually that they need to matter to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI preach a sermon on Sunday morning to prepare them for it. On Sunday night, we tell them to get alone with God; and you spend that alone time. On Monday night, it\u2019s all the men of the church \/ on Tuesday night, it\u2019s all the women of the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn Wednesday night, it\u2019s the whole church. On Thursday night, we say: \u201cGet with your nuclear family. Talk about the year and where we want to go, as a family. Pray for your family to be in one accord, as you enter this year.\u201d On Friday night, you get with other families or other singles to break the fast, so to speak. They have breakfast together at midnight\u2014that kind of thing. That launches our year every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what is the impact of that on a congregation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The impact is (1) unity\u2014all in one accord\u2014prioritizing the spiritual over the physical and expecting the supernatural. We\u2019ve had many supernatural testimonies, where God has broken through in deep needs in people\u2019s lives because of solemn assembly. In the Bible \/ t<em>hroughout<\/em> the Bible, whenever there was a deep crisis, there was a sacred gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I would think there\u2019d be some housecleaning occurring\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right\u2014a lot of housecleaning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in some marriages and families, where some folks were coming clean and stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. They\u2019re cleaning up some stuff so that they can move forward and get out of the mud, and muck, and mire and begin to live life as God intended it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, the church gets unified\u2014it gets, spiritually, cleaned-up or in the process of coming clean. Where do we go next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We go next by now beginning to live out the principles of the Kingdom of God. We call it the \u201cKingdom Agenda\u201d\u2014the visible demonstration of the comprehensive rule of God over every area of life through these four covenants\u2014the individual, the family, the church, and then the community:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we do is\u2014we teach our people: \u201cIndividually, you are to become a disciple\u2014Jesus Christ rules your life. He\u2019s not just a visitor\u2014He has full custody.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: \u201cIn your family\u2014okay, family devotions, using the table as a time of child training, and not just eating, but using the table as a time of blessing your children and encouraging them\/correcting them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the church: \u201cEngaging in the church \/ using your gifts to minister to the church and through the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen: \u201cHaving a presence in your community.\u201d Our one church has adopted 55 public schools, where we have mentoring, tutoring, and family support services going on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody in our community knows our church for good because we\u2019re trying to bless the community through our presence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get enough churches to do that\u2014there are three churches to every public school in America\u2014you get every public school adopted by a solid church that does that, you\u2019ve reached every community in America. You haven\u2019t created anything new because every community already has churches, schools, and families. These are the kind of initiatives that we\u2019re trying to take across the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what you\u2019re doing is\u2014you\u2019re providing a different look \/ a different face to Christianity and people of faith than how a lot of folks can characterize us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Right because a lot of them are only responding to hammers on the pulpit and mean spirits in the pew, rather than clear teaching from the pulpit and love emanating from the pew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think another area that is a great opportunity for the church\u2014that only the church can address\u2014and pardon me for getting on a little soapbox here\u2014but I think it\u2019d be a great one to kind of hitchhike off what you\u2019re talking about\u2014is the foster care system. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have over 400,000 kids in the foster care system. A lot of them have no place to go. The foster care system doesn\u2019t know how to address it. When the church steps in, they can provide the one thing the government can\u2019t\u2014a <em>family<\/em> to care for these kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014a simple solution. We have close to 400,000 churches in America. All you have to do\u2014if you can unify\u2014is get every church to commit to get one of these kids adopted. You just shut down that system.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that can happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That can happen\u2014but you have to have a <em>unified church<\/em>. We are good at being <em>divided<\/em>. We\u2019ve become pros at it\u2014illegitimately divided. We ought to divide over some things; but when you\u2019re illegitimately divided, Satan has a hold; and therefore, the culture can go its own way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Speak to that idea of what\u2019s legitimate and what\u2019s illegitimate because there are some folks, who would look around and say, \u201cWe ought to be partners with these folks down the street,\u201d and other folks would say, \u201cNo, not them!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>There are fundamentals \/ there are non-negotiables: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe authority of Scripture, the deity of Jesus Christ, salvation by grace through faith\u2014they\u2019re fundamentals. When you get to those four or five key items, and you agree on the fundamentals, that is enough to work together for the key issues that we need to face\u2014that is, the commitment to Christ, the gospel, the family as God intended it to be, the influence of the church through some common means for the wellbeing of the community\u2014if you\u2019re together on the fundamentals, that\u2019s enough to work together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I want the listener to hear\u2014and I want you to comment on, Tony\u2014is that you, as a pastor, welcome laymen and women\u2014talking about people from your congregation who step forward \/ who want to be deployed in this battle of love for the culture. I believe there are literally millions of believers, who listen to broadcasts like this, who pound the table about \/ saying, \u201cSomething must be done,\u201d and who are ready to be deployed if they knew what battle they could best be used in going against.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re ready for them to come forward, as a pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I\u2019m ready. Not only am I ready, you can\u2019t join our church if you don\u2019t agree to serve. You have to come in, agreeing to serve, or you can\u2019t become a member. You can\u2019t say, \u201cSing to me, preach to me, pray for me, counsel me, help me, marry me, bury me; but expect nothing from me,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s called a leech. [Laughter] To become part of the body of the Christ is to enter into <em>ministry<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree\u2014I really agree\u2014you know, the real growth that occurs when you get on the battlefield \/ when you get in the game is a test of faith that causes your faith muscle to be flexed and to grow because it has tension against it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The reason why a lot of our members aren\u2019t growing is because they aren\u2019t serving. Jesus says, \u201cThat is the greatness of My presence, is in your service,\u201d\u2014not just in you listening to sermons. It is incumbent. You\u2019re doing your congregates a disservice to allow them to go, month after month \/ year after year, doing nothing but sitting, soaking, and souring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if you go to Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, I want you to overrun Tony wanting to serve. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Come on\u2014overrun me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Overrun him. You know, come forward and say: \u201cPut me in the game, Coach! I\u2019m ready to serve.\u201d And if you go to another church, go to your pastor. Maybe pick up a copy of Tony\u2019s book, <em>America: Turning a Nation to God<\/em>\u2014and get one for yourself and get one for your pastor\u2014and then start talking about: \u201cHow do we take the high ground again? How do we return the church to the place of salt and light in our country that it needs to be?\u201d It needs the voice of reason \/ the voice of God today as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely, and that\u2019s what we do across the country\u2014serve churches. We\u2019ll spend time today with Dr. Tony Evans, talking about how the church can be the church in our culture today. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve heard you\u2014for years\u2014quote a sociologist from Harvard who, back in the 1940s or 1950s, looked at the things that cause a civilization to crumble \/ to decay. You look at his conclusions, from the 1940s and 1950s\u2014and you lay them against our culture today\u2014and you do wonder, \u201cWill America, 50 years from today, still exist as a powerful civilization in our world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. The author\u2019s name was Dr. Carle Zimmerman. He wrote a book called <em>Family and Civilization<\/em>. He traced all the great civilizations in history and tracked what happened to the families as that civilization crumbled and fell apart. He described three phases. Clearly, we\u2019re in the third phase as America\u2014as an empire\u2014I think is seeing the erosion of some its most fundamental elements. Our faith is at the core of all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have not merely a pastor joining us, but a fellow graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong><em>The<\/em>\u2014<em>The <\/em>Dallas\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a little pun for my friends at\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014at Ohio State?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, no! <em>The <\/em>Southern Baptist Seminary!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, got you! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Dr. Tony Evans joins us again. Tony, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad to be with you, always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Tony\u2019s a pastor\u2014has been for more than four decades at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas\/Fort Worth. He has his own radio program called <em>The Alternative<\/em> that is heard in more than a thousand communities across the country and 130 countries around the world. He\u2019s written a book called <em>America: Turning a Nation to God<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTony, you begin the book by talking about a woman by the name of Flory Evans. I don\u2019t know that I\u2019d ever heard the story. Share that with our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, Flo\u2014as she was known, as a 14-year-old young lady, at the turn of the century \/ the 1900s, around 1904\/1905\u2014who stood up in a church gathering and who proclaimed her faith very loudly. For some reason, it ignited a fire in that church, which was picked up by a pastor, who then led what became known as the Welsh Revival\u2014where over 100,000 people came to faith in Christ, starting with that young lady\u2019s public declaration of her faith in Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI open that up to say that what that young lady did that started that revival is what we need to do today because only a revival, where God enters into this fray, can have circumstances in this nation turn around. We only have two options: the return of Jesus Christ, which solves it for us, as believers; or an invasion by Jesus Christ that so ignites His people that it changes the trajectory of the nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you think we\u2019ve seen a revival in our lifetime? Do you think what happened in the late \u201960s and the early \u201970s with the Jesus Movement\u2014was that a revival in our nation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No. It wasn\u2019t a revival because you had pockets; but in terms of a national revival, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve not seen that in a lifetime\u2014I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve seen it in the twentieth century, and now we\u2019re in the twenty-first century\u2014not like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you think we can?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely because the whole point of a revival is to re-engage God into the life of His people, and then from His people into the life of the culture. What people do not understand\u2014spiritually and theologically, which I try to point out in the book\u2014is that we are now experiencing the passive wrath of God. Second Chronicles, Chapter 15, verses 3-6, says, \u201cIn those days there was no true God, no teaching priests, so there was no law.\u201d It says, \u201cCitizen rose up against citizen, city rose up against city, and nation rose up against nation,\u201d\u2014and then it closes with this phrase\u2014\u201cfor God troubled them with every kind of distress.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if God is your problem, only God is your solution. If God is your problem, it doesn\u2019t matter whom you elect. Politics can\u2019t solve this if God is your problem. God is our problem\u2014and because God has been offended because we put Him on the loop \/ we sprinkle a little Jesus on it to make it sound good\u2014but decision-making excludes Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are now undergoing the passive\u2014fire and brimstone\u2019s not coming down\u2014that\u2019s the active wrath of God. It\u2019s where God removes Himself and lets you have the consequences of your choices to leave Him out\u2014that\u2019s what we\u2019re experiencing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Isaiah 59 talks about how \u201crighteousness stands afar,\u201d\u2014at a distance\u2014\u201cand truth has stumbled in the street.\u201d The picture is\u2014truth is kind of flat-down on its face in the street. It says, as a result, instead of us conquering evil, evil is preying upon us. Describe for our listeners what you see, as a pastor, in terms of evil preying on our children \/ our grandchildren, and even on us in this culture. How serious a situation are we in here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s start with the loss of values. There was a time when the Christian worldview, even if you weren\u2019t a Christian, dominated the environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople wanted that worldview reflected in the character of people. But now, with secular media, now with values clarification, now with the redefinition of the family, all of that has eroded\u2014that Judeo-Christian worldview that we were dependent upon. As our founders said, and said so accurately, this republic is dependent upon a virtuous people; and that if we are not a virtuous people, this democracy cannot stand. We have lost or are losing our virtue. So, we\u2019re losing our country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is no longer an agreed-upon moral basis\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014from which democracy can flourish.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The definition of truth is: \u201cAn absolute standard by which reality is measured.\u201d We now live in a relativistic society, where truth is whatever I deem it to be at any given moment. So, you can have conflicting truths all over the place\u2014so therefore, conflicting definitions \/ so therefore, conflicting implementations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are experiencing that\u2014as a culture \/ in the family\u2014even in our churches\u2014who don\u2019t stand \/ many of them who no longer stand for God\u2019s standards. We have invited the world into the church rather than the church going into the world. Everything is going away from God, and we are imploding within.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re pastor of a church of over 10,000 people in Dallas, Texas. You have to see what\u2019s happening in the family, up close and personal. How important is it that our country is now tampering with what God designed in the beginning? In the book of Genesis, He made it really clear: \u201cMale and female, created He them,\u201d and He called them to become one. He was the One who designed marriage, not man. Comment on the importance of this new redefinition of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>This new redefinition of marriage is the nail in the coffin\u2014because\u00a0 once you redefine marriage and, therefore, redefine the family and, therefore, raise a generation of children, who are now being raised to believe this is a legitimate option\u2014then what you have done is redefined society. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat people don\u2019t understand is that to redefine marriage other than what God created is to attack God because male and female were created in His image\u2014not male and male \/ not female and female\u2014it was male and female. So, you no longer have the full expression of God\u2019s image. If you no longer have the full expression of God\u2019s image, you have another god. If you have another god, then you have chaos because there\u2019s only one true God. To attack marriage is to attack God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, but what about the folks who are saying: \u201cLet the church define marriage the way the church wants to define it, and let the culture define it a different way. We can\u2019t impose our morality on people who don\u2019t bow to our God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, first of all, what they do not understand is Romans 13\u2014and that is\u2014even governments were instituted by God. So, the closer a government is to God, the more orderly the society will be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe further a government is from God, the more disorderly the society will become. Marriage was not just created for Christians \/ marriage was created for the human race.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, a society that follows God\u2019s design, even though they may not follow Him, will benefit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely. It\u2019s like non-Christians who get married but use God\u2019s principles in their marriage. Even though they\u2019re not Christians, they can benefit from the principles because they\u2019re applying them as best they can in that relationship\u2014the same thing to a culture and to a country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Given where we are today \/ given the movement away from a biblical understanding of marriage to this more broad, open, inclusive idea, do you really\u2014I\u2019m trying to imagine a time in our country, other than Prohibition, when we took a step over the line and said, \u201cOh, we better pull that back.\u201d Can you imagine that we would step in, five years from now, and say: \u201cOh, we have it wrong\u2014we need to go back to one man and one woman. Those of you, who are married gay couples\u2014you\u2019re going to have to break things up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, that will be very tough to do. We have to fight it now in every way we can, in love, because we still have to treat people with dignity\/with respect. We still have to have a loving spirit about us, but we don\u2019t have to compromise the principle to do it in love. The principle is non-negotiable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And those folks, who look at this and say: \u201cTony, you of all people understand civil rights issues. This is a civil rights issue because it involves discrimination against gay people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, it involves discrimination against sin. We are told to discriminate against sin. When you discriminate against sin, that\u2019s righteous discrimination\u2014all discrimination is not illegitimate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You speak, in your book, how this is like an alarm clock. God has an alarm clock, and it\u2019s time to wake up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. When my alarm clock goes off, it\u2019s disturbing my sleep. I have two options\u2014I can turn it off and go back to sleep, or I can pay attention to it and get up. The only reason I set it is for it to disturb my sleep.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God shakes things up\u2014Hebrews, Chapter 12, says, when He shakes things up, it is to re-introduce His Kingdom. God is now shaking things up\u2014He\u2019s allowing the culture to go crazy\u2014and it is the alarm for Christians to wake up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And there are a lot of God\u2019s people, who are looking at this issue and going, \u201cMaybe the Bible\u2014maybe we\u2019ve just misunderstood some of these verses, and maybe they should be re-interpreted.\u201d There does seem to be\u2014I\u2019m wondering if, at your church, do you have Christians coming up and, \u201cI\u2019m not so sure that homosexuality is wrong\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Not if they\u2019ve been there for a minute\u2014[Laughter]\u2014if they\u2019ve been there for a minute, it has been inexplicably made <em>clear<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019d be time for a session with him. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u2014what God has to say. Yes, it\u2019d be time for a session. [Laughter] We make it clear but, at the same time, we do it in love\u2014we say: \u201cIf you struggle in this area, okay. That\u2019s what the church is for\u2014we\u2019re hospitals\u2014sick people are welcome\u2014you know: \u201cWe\u2019re here to heal you. We\u2019re to help. We\u2019re here to correct \/ we\u2019re here to guide. But don\u2019t ask us to tell God He\u2019s wrong. \u2018Let God be true and every man a liar.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, what people don\u2019t understand is\u2014unless you call sin what God calls sin, even God can\u2019t help you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So\u2014here we are, as a country. Some are calling sin what is truly sin, but a number of folks haven\u2019t paid attention to the alarm clock. They\u2019re still slumbering. What do they need to do; and what do those need to do, who have awakened and are really troubled? You know, I talk to a lot of people, Tony, and so do you\u2014who are talking about: \u201cCan you believe this?\u201d \u201cCan you believe that?\u201d \u201cWhat about this?\u201d \u201cDid you hear this story?\u201d At some point, we have to stop wallowing in how we are losing the battle and find a way to engage\u2014freshly, with love, as you said \/ with truth, as the Bible commands us to\u2014but be about redeeming and proclaiming the gospel of redemption to a broken nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, everybody else is coming out of the closet; so we might as well come out too. Everybody else is going public; so we must go public too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe church is not just for inside the walls. A mist in the pulpit is a fog in the pew unless the pastors take the lead in equipping the saints to do the work of the ministry, outside of the sanctuary, so that there is this collective public presence that speaks the truth of the Word of God in an uncompromising way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason why marriage is being defined by a small group of people is because they\u2019re unified. Their message is the same \/ their activism is the same, and they\u2019re not compromising. They\u2019re not shutting down. We are wallowing back\u2014we do not have a collective presence, saying: \u201cThis is what God says. This is what God means. We want to love you in moving you in that direction.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s something else taking place, too, though. There are a lot of people afraid, Tony. There are a lot of people afraid to speak up because: \u201cIf I speak up, it could cost me my job.\u201d \u201cIf I speak up, it could cost me my relationships.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s where a clear understanding of discipleship has to be communicated because Jesus says, \u201cI want you to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking up for Christ isn\u2019t always the most pleasant place to be. Yes, there is risk. It\u2019s called the risk of faith. So, who are you going to trust? Are you going to trust man, or are you going to trust God? If you are obeying God and you\u2019re doing it in love; then God is responsible for the result, not you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You gather your church together once a year for an event\u2014you call it\u2014it\u2019s a solemn assembly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It\u2019s a solemn assembly \/ a sacred gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain to folks what a solemn assembly is and how that\u2019s different than just a Sunday night church service.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>A solemn assembly is a sacred gathering. It\u2019s usually combined fasting and prayer, where you give up a craving of the physical in order to gain a deeper presence of the spiritual. We invite our whole congregation, over that week, to give up something that matters to them for something spiritually that they need to matter to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI preach a sermon on Sunday morning to prepare them for it. On Sunday night, we tell them to get alone with God; and you spend that alone time. On Monday night, it\u2019s all the men of the church \/ on Tuesday night, it\u2019s all the women of the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn Wednesday night, it\u2019s the whole church. On Thursday night, we say: \u201cGet with your nuclear family. Talk about the year and where we want to go, as a family. Pray for your family to be in one accord, as you enter this year.\u201d On Friday night, you get with other families or other singles to break the fast, so to speak. They have breakfast together at midnight\u2014that kind of thing. That launches our year every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what is the impact of that on a congregation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The impact is (1) unity\u2014all in one accord\u2014prioritizing the spiritual over the physical and expecting the supernatural. We\u2019ve had many supernatural testimonies, where God has broken through in deep needs in people\u2019s lives because of solemn assembly. In the Bible \/ t<em>hroughout<\/em> the Bible, whenever there was a deep crisis, there was a sacred gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I would think there\u2019d be some housecleaning occurring\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right\u2014a lot of housecleaning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in some marriages and families, where some folks were coming clean and stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. They\u2019re cleaning up some stuff so that they can move forward and get out of the mud, and muck, and mire and begin to live life as God intended it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, the church gets unified\u2014it gets, spiritually, cleaned-up or in the process of coming clean. Where do we go next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We go next by now beginning to live out the principles of the Kingdom of God. We call it the \u201cKingdom Agenda\u201d\u2014the visible demonstration of the comprehensive rule of God over every area of life through these four covenants\u2014the individual, the family, the church, and then the community:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we do is\u2014we teach our people: \u201cIndividually, you are to become a disciple\u2014Jesus Christ rules your life. He\u2019s not just a visitor\u2014He has full custody.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: \u201cIn your family\u2014okay, family devotions, using the table as a time of child training, and not just eating, but using the table as a time of blessing your children and encouraging them\/correcting them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the church: \u201cEngaging in the church \/ using your gifts to minister to the church and through the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen: \u201cHaving a presence in your community.\u201d Our one church has adopted 55 public schools, where we have mentoring, tutoring, and family support services going on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody in our community knows our church for good because we\u2019re trying to bless the community through our presence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get enough churches to do that\u2014there are three churches to every public school in America\u2014you get every public school adopted by a solid church that does that, you\u2019ve reached every community in America. You haven\u2019t created anything new because every community already has churches, schools, and families. These are the kind of initiatives that we\u2019re trying to take across the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what you\u2019re doing is\u2014you\u2019re providing a different look \/ a different face to Christianity and people of faith than how a lot of folks can characterize us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Right because a lot of them are only responding to hammers on the pulpit and mean spirits in the pew, rather than clear teaching from the pulpit and love emanating from the pew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think another area that is a great opportunity for the church\u2014that only the church can address\u2014and pardon me for getting on a little soapbox here\u2014but I think it\u2019d be a great one to kind of hitchhike off what you\u2019re talking about\u2014is the foster care system. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have over 400,000 kids in the foster care system. A lot of them have no place to go. The foster care system doesn\u2019t know how to address it. When the church steps in, they can provide the one thing the government can\u2019t\u2014a <em>family<\/em> to care for these kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014a simple solution. We have close to 400,000 churches in America. All you have to do\u2014if you can unify\u2014is get every church to commit to get one of these kids adopted. You just shut down that system.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that can happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>That can happen\u2014but you have to have a <em>unified church<\/em>. We are good at being <em>divided<\/em>. We\u2019ve become pros at it\u2014illegitimately divided. We ought to divide over some things; but when you\u2019re illegitimately divided, Satan has a hold; and therefore, the culture can go its own way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Speak to that idea of what\u2019s legitimate and what\u2019s illegitimate because there are some folks, who would look around and say, \u201cWe ought to be partners with these folks down the street,\u201d and other folks would say, \u201cNo, not them!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>There are fundamentals \/ there are non-negotiables: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe authority of Scripture, the deity of Jesus Christ, salvation by grace through faith\u2014they\u2019re fundamentals. When you get to those four or five key items, and you agree on the fundamentals, that is enough to work together for the key issues that we need to face\u2014that is, the commitment to Christ, the gospel, the family as God intended it to be, the influence of the church through some common means for the wellbeing of the community\u2014if you\u2019re together on the fundamentals, that\u2019s enough to work together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I want the listener to hear\u2014and I want you to comment on, Tony\u2014is that you, as a pastor, welcome laymen and women\u2014talking about people from your congregation who step forward \/ who want to be deployed in this battle of love for the culture. I believe there are literally millions of believers, who listen to broadcasts like this, who pound the table about \/ saying, \u201cSomething must be done,\u201d and who are ready to be deployed if they knew what battle they could best be used in going against.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re ready for them to come forward, as a pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I\u2019m ready. Not only am I ready, you can\u2019t join our church if you don\u2019t agree to serve. You have to come in, agreeing to serve, or you can\u2019t become a member. You can\u2019t say, \u201cSing to me, preach to me, pray for me, counsel me, help me, marry me, bury me; but expect nothing from me,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s called a leech. [Laughter] To become part of the body of the Christ is to enter into <em>ministry<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree\u2014I really agree\u2014you know, the real growth that occurs when you get on the battlefield \/ when you get in the game is a test of faith that causes your faith muscle to be flexed and to grow because it has tension against it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>The reason why a lot of our members aren\u2019t growing is because they aren\u2019t serving. Jesus says, \u201cThat is the greatness of My presence, is in your service,\u201d\u2014not just in you listening to sermons. It is incumbent. You\u2019re doing your congregates a disservice to allow them to go, month after month \/ year after year, doing nothing but sitting, soaking, and souring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if you go to Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, I want you to overrun Tony wanting to serve. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Come on\u2014overrun me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Overrun him. You know, come forward and say: \u201cPut me in the game, Coach! I\u2019m ready to serve.\u201d And if you go to another church, go to your pastor. Maybe pick up a copy of Tony\u2019s book, <em>America: Turning a Nation to God<\/em>\u2014and get one for yourself and get one for your pastor\u2014and then start talking about: \u201cHow do we take the high ground again? How do we return the church to the place of salt and light in our country that it needs to be?\u201d It needs the voice of reason \/ the voice of God today as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Absolutely, and that\u2019s what we do across the country\u2014serve churches.
