I snuck into the women\u2019s session on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise back in February. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are kidding me?!\u00a0 You want to admit that, here on national radio?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was\u2014they needed me there to make an\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re beginning to wonder about you before that, Bob, but this may put it over the top. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They needed me to make an announcement during the session. I thought, \u201cWell, as long as I\u2019m here, I might as well just hang around and see what it is they are going to talk about.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And your statement to me was\u2014this is how impressed Bob was with the speaker you\u2019re about to hear, folks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, you want me to say it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 You were the one that said it\u2014I didn\u2019t. I didn\u2019t hear the message!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>I said, coming out of that message, that: \u201cYou could put Ann Wilson up with any of the well-known, well-respected Bible teachers that ladies go and listen to regularly in churches all around the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHer ability to connect with those women and to deliver truth to those women\u201d\u2014well, as our listeners are going to hear\u2014\u201cshe does a great job.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does, and she is a good friend. She\u2019s been married to her husband Dave since 1981. They started a church together near Rochester Hills, Michigan, that now has grown to just a modest size of 15\/16 thousand people. She is a great lady and also speaks at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaways with her husband Dave. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, Ann and Dave were both a part of the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, back last February. [Laughter] I have been giddy about us being together. Maybe, it\u2019s because I have all sons \/ maybe, it\u2019s because\u2014when my family that I grew up in \/ I have two brothers and a sister\u2014and we all had boys. So, there were 12 boys between us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, the essence of estrogen is just awesome to me!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd honestly, speaking to women is one of my favorite things. It\u2019s not because I feel like I have anything, really, that great to say; but it\u2019s because when we get together, as women, there is a sense of \u201cI\u2019m not the only one going through things.\u201d\u00a0 I feel, sometimes, like I don\u2019t fit the mold of the Christian woman because I\u2019m really not that nice. [Laughter] I want to be nice, but I\u2019m just not always so nice. I\u2019m going to take you through my journey that has been a difficult journey for me of learning how to love, support, and respect Dave. And I\u2019m going to be very truthful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was growing up, my mom was this amazing mother. I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home, but my mom was probably the greatest servant I\u2019ve ever witnessed then and now in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would do for my dad \/ she would serve my dad. He took advantage of it and took her for granted. It made me angry, and I felt like: \u201cMom, stop being so nice to him!\u00a0 You are enabling him to be lazy.\u201d As I got older, I was angry with her. She would say, \u201cI like doing this for your dad;\u201d but I saw her as a doormat, and I didn\u2019t respect her for it. I didn\u2019t get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we came to speak for FamilyLife, I was only 29 when we came on. We\u2019d been married 10 years. So, as 30-year-olds, I\u2019m getting up here, addressing women. I\u2019ll never forget pulling out the notes\u2014and the first time studying what I was going to say and figuring out what I was going to say. In the notes\u2014if you\u2019ve ever been to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you\u2019ll see that one of the first things that we teach in FamilyLife is Genesis\u2014how it says that God has called the woman to be a helper to the man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at that, and I keep looking at the word, \u201chelper.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I think: \u201cWhere is my helper?! [Laughter]\u00a0 Why does the husband get a helper?!\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we get a helper, as the women?\u201d\u00a0 See, you guys, I told you I\u2019m not nice!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, you know, I am sitting there like\u2014so, then, I think: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Maybe, I just have the wrong definition for the helper.\u201d\u00a0 So, I look it up in the dictionary. It says: \u201cA go-for\u2014a person who does the dirty work. Someone important tells them what to do.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cSee!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m talking to Dave; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI don\u2019t think I can speak for FamilyLife because I don\u2019t like that I don\u2019t get a helper.\u201d\u00a0 And he\u2019s like: \u201cOh, my gosh, Ann. You need to know what it means in Hebrew\u2014the word, \u2018helper,\u2019 means completer. You help to complete me.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I\u2019m like: \u201cOkay. Alright, I get that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this whole journey\u2014as you can see by that illustration\u2014has not been easy for me. I seem to be that person that learns the hard way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Dave and I had been married probably about 15 years\u201410 to 15 years. I was asked to speak at our church to the M.O.P.S group\u2014the Mothers of Preschoolers. So, I was going\u2014I said: \u201cHoney, why don\u2019t you come with me?\u00a0 That would be fun. We should do it together. The women would get a guy\u2019s perspective,\u201d\u2014because they wanted us to speak on marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Dave starts\u2014he starts getting into this\u2014and he\u2019s speaking to all these women. He\u2019s talking and he goes: \u201cLadies, I want you to know what it\u2019s like to be a man. You see, as little boys here is what happens\u2014we grow up, and we usually have moms\u201d\u2014and he grew up in a single \/ his mom raised him, as a single mom. \u201cMy mom was cheering for me like, \u2018Good job, David. Good job!\u2019\u00a0 So, I liked that; and little boys are always saying: \u2018Mom, watch. Watch!\u2019\u00a0 You, moms, are always saying: \u2018Good. [Clapping] Way to go!\u00a0 Good job.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we get older, as guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe go into middle school, and high school, and elementary school; and we usually start to find what we are good in. And there is usually someone along the line\u2014a teacher\/a coach\u2014or something that we\u2019re good at that other people applaud for us: \u2018Yes!\u00a0 Good job!\u00a0 You\u2019re the man.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019ve never heard Dave say any of this before. I\u2019m like: \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Look at this. This is some new stuff. This is good.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] So, he says, \u201cAnd I played college football. So, every Saturday,\u201d\u2014and he was a quarterback\u2014\u201cI had a stadium of people like, \u2018Dave Wilson is the man!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we start dating, and we meet you. And you\u2019re saying to us, \u2018You are the man!\u00a0 You are the man!\u00a0 Out of all the men in the universe, I choose you.\u2019\u00a0 And you\u2019re applauding, \u2018[Clapping] Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Then, he goes, \u201cThen, we get married.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019m over here in the chair, like, \u201cOh, where are you going with this now?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes, \u201cWe get married, and it feels like we walk in the door of our homes and all we hear is \u2018BOOO!\u00a0 BOOO!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] He looks at me, at this point. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d\u00a0 And then, he feels really bad\u2014he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, we haven\u2019t really talked about this.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m clueless\u2014clueless. So, we kind of get in this fight, right there. I\u2019m like: \u201cWhat do you mean I boo?\u00a0 I\u2019m not booing you.\u201d\u00a0 It was terrible\u2014like so terrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we get in the car. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat the heck was that about?!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I said, \u201cYou feel like I boo you?\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cYes, I feel like you\u2019re continually disappointed. I feel like I do something, and you\u2019re always critiquing it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, then, I get really defensive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and I said, \u201cI am helping you!\u00a0 I\u201d\u2014because my heart is really, truly\u2014it\u2019s not to harm him\u2014I said: \u201cHoney, I\u2019m telling you that people are not speaking the truth to you, and I will. [Laughter] I am a gift to you!\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 Don\u2019t you feel like that?\u2014like: \u201cI am your gift!\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cAll I hear is boo,\u201d which then takes me on this journey of getting in the Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI come across Proverbs 21:9\u2014it says, \u201cIt\u2019s better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.\u201d Alright, I live in Michigan. So, I\u2019m imagining, when I read this\u2014the middle of winter\u2014 and I\u2019m imagining Dave on the corner of my roof, in the snow, shuttering cold\u2014and it\u2019s better for him to be out there than in the house with me\u2014Oh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was thinking, too, as I started studying for FamilyLife and thinking about what I would say, as a speaker, and I remember reading Ephesians 5:33. Let me tell you\u2014I love Ephesians. It\u2019s the most practical book in the Bible\u2014I feel like\u2014one of them\u2014because the first three chapters\u2014it\u2019s six chapters\u2014the first three chapters are all about doctrine\/theology: \u201cThis is the truth. This is who God is. This is who He says we are.\u201d\u00a0 Then, the last three chapters are all about practical application of that truth\u2014so: \u201cHere is the truth. Now, here is how to apply the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in Ephesians, we find out what we\u2019re called to be, as women \/ what men are called to be, as husbands\u2014as parents. It ends in Chapter 6 with putting on the armor of God\u2014like we can\u2019t do it without the armor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in Ephesians 5:33, when it talks about\u2014and you\u2019ve heard this so much\u2014how the man should love his wife \/ how the woman should respect her husband, I put down in here the Amplified version because I feel like it\u2019s much more direct and descriptive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like, \u201cWhat the heck does it mean to respect our husbands?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it says this\u2014he beginning of it says: \u201cHowever, let each man of you love his wife as his very own self\u201d\u2014and here it is\u2014\u201cand let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband.\u201d\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0 \u201cShe notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him. She defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly.\u201d\u00a0 Ahhh!\u00a0 We should just stop and pray the rest of the time that God will allow us to do that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I look at that, I think, \u201cGod, I want to do that, but what does that look like?\u201d\u00a0 First of all, I would say this: \u201cWe can intentionally choose God\u2019s design, or we can unintentionally fall into the culture\u2019s demise.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is God\u2019s design?\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to look at, but you do know what culture\u2019s design is. Don\u2019t you think that our culture tells us it\u2019s 50-50?\u00a0 Here is the problem\u2014here is what I do when I know the right way. If Dave isn\u2019t doing his part\u2014if he\u2019s not giving 50\u2014I think, \u201cHe\u2019s not giving 50. He\u2019s giving 30,\u201d\u2014so, then, I give 30. \u201cHe\u2019s doing nothing. So, why should I do anything?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what the culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s all about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what is God\u2019s game plan?\u00a0 Proverbs 14:1 says, \u201cThe wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears it down.\u201d\u00a0 When I think about that, I think: \u201cHow am I building my house?\u00a0 What am I doing right now that I am building it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I\u2019ll never forget Andy Stanley saying this\u2014in one of his marriage series\u2014he said this: \u201cYour husband should be able to tell how much God loves him by the way you treat him, and love him, and admire him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour husband may have no idea what God is like, but he should be able to know by the way that you treat him\u2014by the way you respect him, he will have a glimpse of how much God adores him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think what we do, as women, is\u2014we are like, \u201cCan I go work in the children\u2019s wing in the church instead of that?\u201d because that\u2019s so much harder; isn\u2019t it?\u2014he should know how much God loves him by the way we treat him. Let me tell you\u2014in Ephesians, it says this: \u201cSubmit to one another out of\u201d\u2014this is the part\u2014\u201cout of\u201d\u2014anybody know what the next part is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Reverence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence\u201d\u2014for whom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfor God.\u201d\u00a0 Who do we do it for?\u00a0 Why do we love him?\u2014because he deserves it?\u00a0 No\u2014because God deserves it\u2014it\u2019s our devotion \/ it\u2019s our way of serving Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with, first of all, our attitudes. What does respect look like to your man?\u00a0 It demonstrates respect by, first of all, your attitude. Look at Ephesians 4:22-24: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou were taught, with regard to your former way of life\u201d\u2014look at this part\u2014\u201cto put off our old self\u201d\u2014why?\u2014\u201cwhich is being corrupted by its deceitful desires to be made new in the\u201d\u2014first, what\u2019s that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.\u201d\u00a0 It starts where?\u00a0 Here\u2014I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is where I feel like the enemy of our souls, Satan, gets us, first of all\u2014in our attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you ever find yourself griping in your head and complaining?\u00a0 I will never forget\u2014I was so mad at Dave. He had been gone so much\u2014I felt like he wasn\u2019t helping. I felt like he wasn\u2019t listening to me, and I remember folding the laundry. I remember folding, and the whole time, I\u2019m building like this whole scenario of like: \u201cHe doesn\u2019t do anything! He\u2019s lazy, and he doesn\u2019t notice me!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m folding and folding. I felt like God said to me: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would happen if you prayed as much as you complained in your head?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes! Talk about conviction. It made me realize how our thoughts\u2014isn\u2019t this true?\u2014 because the Bible says that \u201cAs a man thinks, so is he.\u201d\u00a0 As we think about our husbands, it turns into action; but it starts right here in our minds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we don\u2019t realize and we forget the influence and the power that we have, as women. We have so much power to make him great, and we have the power to crush him in an instant. It\u2019s a heady responsibility that we have, and God has given it to us and entrusted it to us. He has chosen you \/ He has chosen me to help make my husband the man that He wants. I don\u2019t know if I can do it sometimes, and I know I can\u2019t apart from His Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does an attitude look like?\u2014an attitude of unconditional respect? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says that God commands the wives to respect our husbands without conditions \/ without him earning it. He is God\u2019s gift to us and comes with a blessing\u2014it is an attitude of honor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur culture treats men like they are stupid; and we, as women, can treat men like they are stupid. When we treat them as if they are stupid, they will act like they are stupid. Honestly, I think that\u2014this is so embarrassing\u2014I think\u2014sometimes, I feel like, \u201cI\u2019m just smarter than Dave,\u201d you know?\u00a0 We\u2019re better communicators\u2014and I think we get prideful, as women. We treat our husbands like they are not as great as they really are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this quote by Stu Weber\u2014that: \u201cA woman can so easily crush a man\u2019s spirit with a word, with a look, with a shrug of indifference. Her cynicism is utterly emasculating; and many times, incredibly subtle. Like a fine, thin blade, it slices deep, penetrating to the very core of his masculine soul.\u201d\u00a0 Ahh!\u00a0 Those are hard words to hear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, Dave and I\u2014this is just a terrible illustration. Dave was on the phone. He had made a hotel reservation for some friends coming in. I was in the other room\u2014I could hear him talking on the phone. I could tell that they lost the reservation \/ that they didn\u2019t take the reservation. Dave was being really nice\u2014he\u2019s like, \u201cOkay, well, do you think that there is another room we could get?\u201d\u00a0 I am instantly\u2014this is terrible\u2014I\u2019m instantly like: \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 I can handle this,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cI will get this done.\u201d\u00a0 You guys\u2014any of you like that? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I walk in there; and I\u2019m like: \u201cDave\u2014give me the phone!\u00a0 Just give me the phone!\u201d\u2014this is the attitude; you know?\u2014like: \u201cI can do these things. I\u2019m better than you. I\u2019m better than you.\u201d\u00a0 So, he gets so mad. He takes the phone\u2014he throws it on the ground, and he walks out of the room. He doesn\u2019t usually do that, and I will tell you\u2014here are the first signs that you know that you\u2019ve disrespected your man\u2014one of two things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014anger or they storm off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI should have known instantly. I didn\u2019t know any of this stuff back then, but I should have known instantly\u2014I so disrespected him. The next thing, he walked out of the room. Here is what he says, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just cut it off, Ann?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s embarrassing to me that I would be so prideful, thinking that I\u2019m so\u2014\u201cI can get that done,\u201d\u2014that I would emasculate him like that: \u201cWho cares?\u00a0 It\u2019s a hotel room, Ann!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have the power to make him great, and I have the power to <em>crush him<\/em>. I\u2019m embarrassed to tell you that story. I apologized to him later because it was so flagrant that I could see it so clearly. That\u2019s what I mean by I learn the hard way sometimes. So, how are you doing?\u00a0 I want you to grade yourself on a 1-5\u20145 being great \/ 1being not so great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow are you doing with your attitude in respecting your husband?\u00a0 Just kind of mentally think, \u201cWhere am I?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part today of a message from Ann Wilson\u2014a message she shared with women onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, back in February. You could hear how quiet it was in the room; couldn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think she\u2019s touching on, obviously, a felt need. Women need to know, practically, how their respect can either build their husbands or cut him down. It goes back to Ephesians, Chapter 5\u2014a simple job description or an assignment\u2014that God gives women a command. It says in Ephesians 5:33, \u201cHowever, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s very clear. What does that mean?\u2014\u201crespect.\u201d Well, it shows up in your attitude\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014how you respond to him\u2014when he\u2019s attempting to lead, when he really is leading, or maybe, even when he fails. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It also shows up in your words and in your actions. Ann is going to address that in Part Two of her message, which we\u2019ll hear on tomorrow\u2019s program. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think the question for every wife, who is listening to our broadcast: \u201cHow are you doing at respecting your husband in your attitude, in your words, in your actions, and in how you respond to him?\u201d\u00a0 Just give yourself a grade. Then, ask the Holy Spirit to go to work in your heart, and maybe, convict you like she was convicted, there at the end of her message. You could hear her reflecting with a teachable heart: \u201cLord, how do I need to be a better wife in terms of respecting my husband?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, if you are a man, and you\u2019ve listened to this all the way through to the end, the question for you is: \u201cAre you a man worthy of respect?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a key question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wouldn\u2019t brush that one off\u2014I\u2019d just ask the question: \u201cHave you truly loved her, and cherished her, and nourished her the way you\u2019re commanded to?\u201d\u2014because, if you have, it\u2019s going to make it easier for her to respect you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. I snuck into the women\u2019s session on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise back in February. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are kidding me?!\u00a0 You want to admit that, here on national radio?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There was\u2014they needed me there to make an\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re beginning to wonder about you before that, Bob, but this may put it over the top. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They needed me to make an announcement during the session. I thought, \u201cWell, as long as I\u2019m here, I might as well just hang around and see what it is they are going to talk about.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And your statement to me was\u2014this is how impressed Bob was with the speaker you\u2019re about to hear, folks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, you want me to say it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 You were the one that said it\u2014I didn\u2019t. I didn\u2019t hear the message!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>I said, coming out of that message, that: \u201cYou could put Ann Wilson up with any of the well-known, well-respected Bible teachers that ladies go and listen to regularly in churches all around the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHer ability to connect with those women and to deliver truth to those women\u201d\u2014well, as our listeners are going to hear\u2014\u201cshe does a great job.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does, and she is a good friend. She\u2019s been married to her husband Dave since 1981. They started a church together near Rochester Hills, Michigan, that now has grown to just a modest size of 15\/16 thousand people. [Laughter] I have been giddy about us being together. Maybe, it\u2019s because I have all sons \/ maybe, it\u2019s because\u2014when my family that I grew up in \/ I have two brothers and a sister\u2014and we all had boys. So, there were 12 boys between us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, the essence of estrogen is just awesome to me!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd honestly, speaking to women is one of my favorite things. It\u2019s not because I feel like I have anything, really, that great to say; but it\u2019s because when we get together, as women, there is a sense of \u201cI\u2019m not the only one going through things.\u201d\u00a0 I feel, sometimes, like I don\u2019t fit the mold of the Christian woman because I\u2019m really not that nice. [Laughter] I want to be nice, but I\u2019m just not always so nice. I\u2019m going to take you through my journey that has been a difficult journey for me of learning how to love, support, and respect Dave. And I\u2019m going to be very truthful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was growing up, my mom was this amazing mother. I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home, but my mom was probably the greatest servant I\u2019ve ever witnessed then and now in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would do for my dad \/ she would serve my dad. He took advantage of it and took her for granted. It made me angry, and I felt like: \u201cMom, stop being so nice to him!\u00a0 You are enabling him to be lazy.\u201d As I got older, I was angry with her. She would say, \u201cI like doing this for your dad;\u201d but I saw her as a doormat, and I didn\u2019t respect her for it. I didn\u2019t get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we came to speak for FamilyLife, I was only 29 when we came on. We\u2019d been married 10 years. So, as 30-year-olds, I\u2019m getting up here, addressing women. I\u2019ll never forget pulling out the notes\u2014and the first time studying what I was going to say and figuring out what I was going to say. In the notes\u2014if you\u2019ve ever been to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you\u2019ll see that one of the first things that we teach in FamilyLife is Genesis\u2014how it says that God has called the woman to be a helper to the man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at that, and I keep looking at the word, \u201chelper.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I think: \u201cWhere is my helper?! [Laughter]\u00a0 Why does the husband get a helper?!\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we get a helper, as the women?\u201d\u00a0 See, you guys, I told you I\u2019m not nice!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, you know, I am sitting there like\u2014so, then, I think: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Maybe, I just have the wrong definition for the helper.\u201d\u00a0 So, I look it up in the dictionary. It says: \u201cA go-for\u2014a person who does the dirty work. Someone important tells them what to do.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cSee!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m talking to Dave; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI don\u2019t think I can speak for FamilyLife because I don\u2019t like that I don\u2019t get a helper.\u201d\u00a0 And he\u2019s like: \u201cOh, my gosh, Ann. You need to know what it means in Hebrew\u2014the word, \u2018helper,\u2019 means completer. You help to complete me.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I\u2019m like: \u201cOkay. Alright, I get that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this whole journey\u2014as you can see by that illustration\u2014has not been easy for me. I seem to be that person that learns the hard way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Dave and I had been married probably about 15 years\u201410 to 15 years. I was asked to speak at our church to the M.O.P.S group\u2014the Mothers of Preschoolers. So, I was going\u2014I said: \u201cHoney, why don\u2019t you come with me?\u00a0 That would be fun. We should do it together. The women would get a guy\u2019s perspective,\u201d\u2014because they wanted us to speak on marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Dave starts\u2014he starts getting into this\u2014and he\u2019s speaking to all these women. He\u2019s talking and he goes: \u201cLadies, I want you to know what it\u2019s like to be a man. You see, as little boys here is what happens\u2014we grow up, and we usually have moms\u201d\u2014and he grew up in a single \/ his mom raised him, as a single mom. \u201cMy mom was cheering for me like, \u2018Good job, David. Good job!\u2019\u00a0 So, I liked that; and little boys are always saying: \u2018Mom, watch. Watch!\u2019\u00a0 You, moms, are always saying: \u2018Good. [Clapping] Way to go!\u00a0 Good job.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we get older, as guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe go into middle school, and high school, and elementary school; and we usually start to find what we are good in. And there is usually someone along the line\u2014a teacher\/a coach\u2014or something that we\u2019re good at that other people applaud for us: \u2018Yes!\u00a0 Good job!\u00a0 You\u2019re the man.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019ve never heard Dave say any of this before. I\u2019m like: \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Look at this. This is some new stuff. This is good.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] So, he says, \u201cAnd I played college football. So, every Saturday,\u201d\u2014and he was a quarterback\u2014\u201cI had a stadium of people like, \u2018Dave Wilson is the man!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cAnd then, we start dating, and we meet you. And you\u2019re saying to us, \u2018You are the man!\u00a0 You are the man!\u00a0 Out of all the men in the universe, I choose you.\u2019\u00a0 And you\u2019re applauding, \u2018[Clapping] Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Then, he goes, \u201cThen, we get married.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I\u2019m over here in the chair, like, \u201cOh, where are you going with this now?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe goes, \u201cWe get married, and it feels like we walk in the door of our homes and all we hear is \u2018BOOO!\u00a0 BOOO!\u2019\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] He looks at me, at this point. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat?!\u201d\u00a0 And then, he feels really bad\u2014he\u2019s like, \u201cOh, we haven\u2019t really talked about this.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m clueless\u2014clueless. So, we kind of get in this fight, right there. I\u2019m like: \u201cWhat do you mean I boo?\u00a0 I\u2019m not booing you.\u201d\u00a0 It was terrible\u2014like so terrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we get in the car. I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat the heck was that about?!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I said, \u201cYou feel like I boo you?\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cYes, I feel like you\u2019re continually disappointed. I feel like I do something, and you\u2019re always critiquing it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, then, I get really defensive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and I said, \u201cI am helping you!\u00a0 I\u201d\u2014because my heart is really, truly\u2014it\u2019s not to harm him\u2014I said: \u201cHoney, I\u2019m telling you that people are not speaking the truth to you, and I will. [Laughter] I am a gift to you!\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 Don\u2019t you feel like that?\u2014like: \u201cI am your gift!\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cAll I hear is boo,\u201d which then takes me on this journey of getting in the Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI come across Proverbs 21:9\u2014it says, \u201cIt\u2019s better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.\u201d Alright, I live in Michigan. So, I\u2019m imagining, when I read this\u2014the middle of winter\u2014 and I\u2019m imagining Dave on the corner of my roof, in the snow, shuttering cold\u2014and it\u2019s better for him to be out there than in the house with me\u2014Oh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was thinking, too, as I started studying for FamilyLife and thinking about what I would say, as a speaker, and I remember reading Ephesians 5:33. Let me tell you\u2014I love Ephesians. It\u2019s the most practical book in the Bible\u2014I feel like\u2014one of them\u2014because the first three chapters\u2014it\u2019s six chapters\u2014the first three chapters are all about doctrine\/theology: \u201cThis is the truth. This is who God is. This is who He says we are.\u201d\u00a0 Then, the last three chapters are all about practical application of that truth\u2014so: \u201cHere is the truth. Now, here is how to apply the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in Ephesians, we find out what we\u2019re called to be, as women \/ what men are called to be, as husbands\u2014as parents. It ends in Chapter 6 with putting on the armor of God\u2014like we can\u2019t do it without the armor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in Ephesians 5:33, when it talks about\u2014and you\u2019ve heard this so much\u2014how the man should love his wife \/ how the woman should respect her husband, I put down in here the Amplified version because I feel like it\u2019s much more direct and descriptive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like, \u201cWhat the heck does it mean to respect our husbands?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it says this\u2014he beginning of it says: \u201cHowever, let each man of you love his wife as his very own self\u201d\u2014and here it is\u2014\u201cand let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband.\u201d\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0 \u201cShe notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates and esteems him. She defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly.\u201d\u00a0 Ahhh!\u00a0 We should just stop and pray the rest of the time that God will allow us to do that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I look at that, I think, \u201cGod, I want to do that, but what does that look like?\u201d\u00a0 First of all, I would say this: \u201cWe can intentionally choose God\u2019s design, or we can unintentionally fall into the culture\u2019s demise.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is God\u2019s design?\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to look at, but you do know what culture\u2019s design is. Don\u2019t you think that our culture tells us it\u2019s 50-50?\u00a0 Here is the problem\u2014here is what I do when I know the right way. If Dave isn\u2019t doing his part\u2014if he\u2019s not giving 50\u2014I think, \u201cHe\u2019s not giving 50. He\u2019s giving 30,\u201d\u2014so, then, I give 30. \u201cHe\u2019s doing nothing. So, why should I do anything?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what the culture tells us: \u201cIt\u2019s all about <em>us<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what is God\u2019s game plan?\u00a0 Proverbs 14:1 says, \u201cThe wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears it down.\u201d\u00a0 When I think about that, I think: \u201cHow am I building my house?\u00a0 What am I doing right now that I am building it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I\u2019ll never forget Andy Stanley saying this\u2014in one of his marriage series\u2014he said this: \u201cYour husband should be able to tell how much God loves him by the way you treat him, and love him, and admire him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour husband may have no idea what God is like, but he should be able to know by the way that you treat him\u2014by the way you respect him, he will have a glimpse of how much God adores him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think what we do, as women, is\u2014we are like, \u201cCan I go work in the children\u2019s wing in the church instead of that?\u201d because that\u2019s so much harder; isn\u2019t it?\u2014he should know how much God loves him by the way we treat him. Let me tell you\u2014in Ephesians, it says this: \u201cSubmit to one another out of\u201d\u2014this is the part\u2014\u201cout of\u201d\u2014anybody know what the next part is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Reverence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201creverence\u201d\u2014for whom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfor God.\u201d\u00a0 Who do we do it for?\u00a0 Why do we love him?\u2014because he deserves it?\u00a0 No\u2014because God deserves it\u2014it\u2019s our devotion \/ it\u2019s our way of serving Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with, first of all, our attitudes. What does respect look like to your man?\u00a0 It demonstrates respect by, first of all, your attitude. Look at Ephesians 4:22-24: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou were taught, with regard to your former way of life\u201d\u2014look at this part\u2014\u201cto put off our old self\u201d\u2014why?\u2014\u201cwhich is being corrupted by its deceitful desires to be made new in the\u201d\u2014first, what\u2019s that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cattitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.\u201d\u00a0 It starts where?\u00a0 Here\u2014I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is where I feel like the enemy of our souls, Satan, gets us, first of all\u2014in our attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you ever find yourself griping in your head and complaining?\u00a0 I will never forget\u2014I was so mad at Dave. He had been gone so much\u2014I felt like he wasn\u2019t helping. I felt like he wasn\u2019t listening to me, and I remember folding the laundry. I remember folding, and the whole time, I\u2019m building like this whole scenario of like: \u201cHe doesn\u2019t do anything! He\u2019s lazy, and he doesn\u2019t notice me!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m folding and folding. I felt like God said to me: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would happen if you prayed as much as you complained in your head?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann: <\/strong>Yes! Talk about conviction. It made me realize how our thoughts\u2014isn\u2019t this true?\u2014 because the Bible says that \u201cAs a man thinks, so is he.\u201d\u00a0 As we think about our husbands, it turns into action; but it starts right here in our minds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we don\u2019t realize and we forget the influence and the power that we have, as women. We have so much power to make him great, and we have the power to crush him in an instant. It\u2019s a heady responsibility that we have, and God has given it to us and entrusted it to us. He has chosen you \/ He has chosen me to help make my husband the man that He wants. I don\u2019t know if I can do it sometimes, and I know I can\u2019t apart from His Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does an attitude look like?\u2014an attitude of unconditional respect? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says that God commands the wives to respect our husbands without conditions \/ without him earning it. He is God\u2019s gift to us and comes with a blessing\u2014it is an attitude of honor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur culture treats men like they are stupid; and we, as women, can treat men like they are stupid. When we treat them as if they are stupid, they will act like they are stupid. Honestly, I think that\u2014this is so embarrassing\u2014I think\u2014sometimes, I feel like, \u201cI\u2019m just smarter than Dave,\u201d you know?\u00a0 We\u2019re better communicators\u2014and I think we get prideful, as women. We treat our husbands like they are not as great as they really are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this quote by Stu Weber\u2014that: \u201cA woman can so easily crush a man\u2019s spirit with a word, with a look, with a shrug of indifference. Her cynicism is utterly emasculating; and many times, incredibly subtle. Like a fine, thin blade, it slices deep, penetrating to the very core of his masculine soul.\u201d\u00a0 Ahh!\u00a0 Those are hard words to hear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, Dave and I\u2014this is just a terrible illustration. Dave was on the phone. He had made a hotel reservation for some friends coming in. I was in the other room\u2014I could hear him talking on the phone. I could tell that they lost the reservation \/ that they didn\u2019t take the reservation. Dave was being really nice\u2014he\u2019s like, \u201cOkay, well, do you think that there is another room we could get?\u201d\u00a0 I am instantly\u2014this is terrible\u2014I\u2019m instantly like: \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 I can handle this,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cI will get this done.\u201d\u00a0 You guys\u2014any of you like that? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I walk in there; and I\u2019m like: \u201cDave\u2014give me the phone!\u00a0 Just give me the phone!\u201d\u2014this is the attitude; you know?\u2014like: \u201cI can do these things. I\u2019m better than you. I\u2019m better than you.\u201d\u00a0 So, he gets so mad. He takes the phone\u2014he throws it on the ground, and he walks out of the room. He doesn\u2019t usually do that, and I will tell you\u2014here are the first signs that you know that you\u2019ve disrespected your man\u2014one of two things\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014anger or they storm off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI should have known instantly. I didn\u2019t know any of this stuff back then, but I should have known instantly\u2014I so disrespected him. The next thing, he walked out of the room. Here is what he says, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just cut it off, Ann?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s embarrassing to me that I would be so prideful, thinking that I\u2019m so\u2014\u201cI can get that done,\u201d\u2014that I would emasculate him like that: \u201cWho cares?\u00a0 It\u2019s a hotel room, Ann!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have the power to make him great, and I have the power to <em>crush him<\/em>. I\u2019m embarrassed to tell you that story. I apologized to him later because it was so flagrant that I could see it so clearly. That\u2019s what I mean by I learn the hard way sometimes. So, how are you doing?\u00a0 I want you to grade yourself on a 1-5\u20145 being great \/ 1being not so great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow are you doing with your attitude in respecting your husband?\u00a0 Just kind of mentally think, \u201cWhere am I?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part today of a message from Ann Wilson\u2014a message she shared with women onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, back in February. You could hear how quiet it was in the room; couldn\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think she\u2019s touching on, obviously, a felt need. Women need to know, practically, how their respect can either build their husbands or cut him down. It goes back to Ephesians, Chapter 5\u2014a simple job description or an assignment\u2014that God gives women a command. It says in Ephesians 5:33, \u201cHowever, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s very clear. What does that mean?\u2014\u201crespect.\u201d Well, it shows up in your attitude\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014how you respond to him\u2014when he\u2019s attempting to lead, when he really is leading, or maybe, even when he fails. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It also shows up in your words and in your actions. Ann is going to address that in Part Two of her message, which we\u2019ll hear on tomorrow\u2019s program. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think the question for every wife, who is listening to our broadcast: \u201cHow are you doing at respecting your husband in your attitude, in your words, in your actions, and in how you respond to him?\u201d\u00a0 Just give yourself a grade. Then, ask the Holy Spirit to go to work in your heart, and maybe, convict you like she was convicted, there at the end of her message. You could hear her reflecting with a teachable heart: \u201cLord, how do I need to be a better wife in terms of respecting my husband?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, if you are a man, and you\u2019ve listened to this all the way through to the end, the question for you is: \u201cAre you a man worthy of respect?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a key question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wouldn\u2019t brush that one off\u2014I\u2019d just ask the question: \u201cHave you truly loved her, and cherished her, and nourished her the way you\u2019re commanded to?\u201d\u2014because, if you have, it\u2019s going to make it easier for her to respect you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.
