He took the revelation of God, and he led his wife and told her. So, when they\u2019re sitting there\u2014and Adam is right beside her\u2014and Satan in the snake tempts them and twists the word of God and said: \u201cThat isn\u2019t what God said. You wouldn\u2019t think that, if you were on a luxury cruise, that you\u2019d feel like you stepped into a locker room at any point during the week. [Laughter]\u00a0 But it felt a little like a locker room, back last February, when we were on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage cruise. The chaplain of the Detroit Lions football team, Dave Wilson, huddled the men together; and he gave them quite a pep talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Those guys absolutely loved this, and you\u2019re going to love this too\u2014whether you are a man or a woman \/ whether you are single or married. I\u2019m just telling you\u2014if this doesn\u2019t light your fire, your wood is wet. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, Dave is just a great guy\u2014pastors a church near Detroit of over 15,000 people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s one of our speakers at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway, and he rocked the boat. [Laughter]\u00a0 He <em>rocked<\/em> the boat on the cruise that we did last Valentine\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can I just say\u2014I don\u2019t know how many of our listeners have heard us mention the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise and have thought: \u201cOh, I\u2019ve been on a cruise. I don\u2019t ever want to go on a cruise again,\u201d because, honestly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have never been on our cruise, if you are saying that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Some cruises\u2014it\u2019s a big party boat. You go, \u201cThat was not the atmosphere I was looking for.\u201d\u00a0 But when you get to take over the whole boat\u2014and it is all people who are there for the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s really a hoot, Bob\u2014it\u2019s absolutely a hoot. I love challenging men to be men. I call it \u201cReal Men\u201d\u2014four-pillar manhood is taking the word, \u201creal\u201d\u2014R-E-A-L\u2014and saying, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014making an acrostic of it\u2014and \u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to challenge you, as men, to be husbands and dads\u2014but, really, to understand: \u201cWhat is a man? What is a fourth-pillar man?\u00a0 I think you know this\u2014this is really important for us\u2014to know what a man is \/ to know what a vision of manhood is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I\u2019ve listened to Voddie talk so many times. I was watching TV the other night, with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> DVD manhood series\u2014and Voddie was talking about the three B\u2019s that define a man. Have you seen this? Men in our culture are defined by \u201cbillfold, ball field, or bedroom.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really true. He said: \u201cYou\u2019ve got cash\u2014you\u2019ve got a lot of cash \/ a lot of possessions\u2014you\u2019re a man,\u201d \u201cYou do something on a ball field \/ any ball field\u2014you\u2019re an athlete\u2014you\u2019re a man,\u201d or, \u201cIf you have a lot of women\u2026\u201d\u2014right?\u2014that\u2019s our culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about that as I was watching the other night\u2014I thought\u2014I walk into a locker room almost every day, during the fall, with the Detroit Lions\u2014for 30 years, I\u2019ve been doing this. Every one of those guys is defined by that. They\u2019ve got cash \/ they\u2019ve got stuff; they\u2019ve got women; they are at the highest level you can be in their career\u2014and most of the guys in that locker room\u2014guess what\u2014they are boys \/ they are not men. Every year, I talk about the four pillars of manhood with these guys. They walk up to me and say: \u201cI\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> heard any of this. I\u2019ve <em>never <\/em>seen this. Can you help me become that guy?\u201d\u00a0 This stuff, I believe, is just critical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur boys don\u2019t know what a man is. I mean, in our culture, when does a boy become a man?\u00a0 In <em>Stepping Up<\/em>, they went out and asked men that \/ asked women that: \u201cWhen does a boy\u2026\u201d\u2014nobody knew. One guy said, \u201cWhen he has sex.\u201d\u00a0 Let me ask you guys, \u201cDid you become a man when you had sex?\u201d\u2014show of hands. Yes\u2014no hands are going up\u2014it\u2019s like you would, but that didn\u2019t do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur sons need a vision of what a man looks like. Our daughters need to see one so that they don\u2019t settle for something less when they get married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur wives\u2014let me tell you\u2014our wives are <em>longing<\/em> for a man\u2014a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to get right into it because here is what I did. If you guys have ever read Robert Lewis\u2019s material\u2014<em>Men\u2019s Fraternity<\/em> or <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014how many of you know what I\u2019m talking about?\u00a0 Yes, <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014I got it as a young father\u2014I\u2019ve got three sons now. My oldest is 29, 27, and 25. They are all married, and that was my guide book to raise boys to men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that book, <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014which I think applies to fathers with daughters as well\u2014but it\u2019s really a definition of manhood \/ gives you a vision of manhood. Then, he has four sort of characteristics\u2014I\u2019m going to use three of them\u2014and I changed the \u201cE.\u201d\u00a0 He uses the same letters in a different order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting on a bus with Robert Lewis, back in the early 90\u2019s. I was talking to him about the pillars\u2014I don\u2019t know if he even called them pillars. I said, \u201cRobert, would it be okay if I took your pillars and put them in a different word?\u2014because it comes out, \u2018Real\u2019!\u2014and can I change the E?\u201d\u00a0 And he goes: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDude, you do <em>whatever<\/em> you want with this. I want men to know what a man is. So, do whatever you want.\u201d\u00a0 So, I took his three and changed the \u201cE.\u201d I\u2019m going to give you my spin on that\u2014and again, it\u2019s just \u201cGet real\u2014R-E-A-L.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe \u201cR\u201d is the same one Robert has in his book, and some of you know what it is: \u201cWhat\u2019s real man?\u2014he what?\u201d Yes, some of you said it: \u201cA real man rejects passivity.\u201d\u00a0 If you want to write this down, write it down; or put it in your phone: \u201cA real man rejects passivity.\u201d That basically comes from\u2014and I think Robert is the first one I ever heard talk about this. In Genesis, Chapter 1, we have Adam and Eve\u2014first man \/ first woman. You talk about what a man <em>shouldn\u2019t be<\/em>\u2014Adam \/ what a man <em>should be<\/em>\u2014Jesus\u2014and you\u2019ll see this in these four pillars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdam represented all four pillars to the negative\u2014he didn\u2019t accomplish any of them. Jesus accomplished all of them\u2014He rejected passivity to come from heaven to earth and save our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdam is in the Garden\u2014some of you know this story. When Adam and Eve sinned\u2014when Eve bites of the fruit, where was Adam?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Right beside her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes, many of you know this\u2014but if you\u2019ve never read this or had anybody teach about this\u2014I remember when I first heard Robert teach about this. I had <em>no idea<\/em> that Genesis 3:6 said this: \u201cWhen the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some of it and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, we don\u2019t know exactly if they are sitting on a tree \/ sitting on a log\u2014but where was Adam?\u2014right here. So, if you understand Scripture, God told whom about the tree they shouldn\u2019t [eat from]?\u2014Adam or Eve?\u2014God told Adam. He told the man because that\u2019s the fourth pillar\u2014you\u2019ve got to lead. Don\u2019t write it down yet\u2014we\u2019ll get there. So, he communicated to Eve what God said. He took the revelation from God and led his wife and told her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when they are sitting there\u2014and Adam is right beside her\u2014and Satan in the snake tempts them and twists the word of God and said: \u201cThat isn\u2019t what God said. He doesn\u2019t want you to eat it because He doesn\u2019t want you to be like Him,\u201d\u2014what should have Adam done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe should have said: \u201cEve, don\u2019t listen to him. That\u2019s a lie!\u00a0 It\u2019s a lie from the pit of hell!\u00a0 I\u2019m going to kill this thing right now.\u201d\u00a0 No. What does Adam do?\u2014passivity \/ he\u2019s passive. I don\u2019t know what he thought\u2014I mean, had to be thinking, \u201cThat\u2019s not what God said\u201d; but what did he do?\u2014he sat there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you realize we live in a culture, in America, of passive men?\u00a0 I read a stat the other day that said, \u201cThis is the first time in American history that women are stronger than men.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s becoming a matriarchal society. I think it\u2019s <em>awesome<\/em> that women are strong\u2014I love that\u2014but let me tell you, \u201cGod calls men to stop being passive and be men.\u201d I\u2019m not saying to become a dictator and an idiot and you fight everybody. I\u2019m just saying, \u201cThere needs to be strength and firmness in a man\u2019s life that leads his woman.\u201d\u00a0 Your wife is <em>longing<\/em> for you to lead her, and most of that is just rejecting passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the reason we say, \u201creject passivity\u201d is we all have a streak of passivity. I mean, I read that story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and I\u2019m like: \u201cCome on, dude!\u00a0 Come on, Adam, step up!\u201d\u00a0 Then, I look at my own heart; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m passive so often!\u201d\u00a0 So, what we are saying is\u2014when that passivity is there \/ when you are in a situation and you think, \u201cMan, somebody needs to do something,\u201d DO SOMETHING!\u00a0 Boys are passive \/ men act! When it\u2019s there, it is like, \u201cI\u2019ve got to reject that.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s going to be there\u2014\u201cWhen I feel that passivity, I\u2019ve got to fight against it \/ I\u2019ve got to reject it, and I\u2019ve got to go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I remember when I first started dating Ann. She said to me\u2014like three or four weeks in\u2014she goes: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I realize why I am falling in love with you.\u201d\u00a0 And I go, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cYou\u2019re the first strong leader-man I\u2019ve ever dated.\u201d\u00a0 She goes: \u201cI didn\u2019t realize this before, but I\u2019ve been dating boys. Now, I\u2019m dating a man.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou\u2019ve got that right, baby!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know what I mean?\u00a0 And I was just figuring out what a man was\u2014<em>I really<\/em> didn\u2019t even know what a man was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>It was like\u2014as I grew <em>into<\/em> a man\u2014and I say to the men at my church\u2014I don\u2019t have time to get into this\u2014but I say: \u201cI became a man at age 32. A lot of you did before that, but here is what happened at 32,\u201d\u2014and this is a whole other sermon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t have time\u2014but number one, I understood what the four pillars were; and I started to live them out. That\u2019s when you start becoming a man\u2014when you start rejecting passivity, engaging with God, accepting responsibility, and leading with courage. You know\u2014write those down. We\u2019ll go through each one of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But the <em>other <\/em>thing that I did, at age 32\u2014that I started at age 28\u2014but it took me that long\u2014is I forgave my dad. I don\u2019t have time to get into it, but I had a dad that walked out on our family when I was seven years old\u2014took me on vacations with his mistresses, as a toddler. Left my mom\u2014dad left me and my brother with a single mom. My brother died six weeks later of leukemia\u2014my five-year-old brother. I had to forgive my dad, in my 20s; and God took me on this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget\u2014I read a quote by Lewis Smedes in a book called <em>Forgive &amp; Forget<\/em>. He said, \u201cWhen you forgive someone, you set a prisoner free\u2014only to discover you are the prisoner.\u201d\u00a0 I realized, \u201cAll of this bitterness I\u2019ve been harboring toward my dad\u2014all those years was not locking him up\u2014it was locking me up from being the real man that God called me to be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m telling you\u2014it took a long time; but when God gave me the power\u2014I didn\u2019t have the power\u2014but when God did that through me, and I forgave my dad, I became free to become a four-pillar man. That\u2019s where the journey, for me, really started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, reject passivity is just this\u2014I mean, I could talk about that all morning. In fact, when I do the chapel with the Lions, we do one pillar a week. Even one\u2014we take half the season to just talk about. So, I\u2019m going to try and do all four really quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I did in our last chapel for the Lions\u2014I used the David and Goliath story to talk about the four pillars. I\u2019ll just do it really quickly. If you want to go to 1 Samuel 17, you can pull it up in your Bible or on your phone. I\u2019m not going to read them exactly because I don\u2019t have time; but many of you know the David and Goliath story; right?\u00a0 We know it; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, think about this\u2014we\u2019ve got a battle between the Philistines and the Israelites\u2014God\u2019s chosen people and the enemy of God. There is one man \/ a giant, and a boy goes out. Of all the men there\u2014who were warriors ready to fight\u2014guess who the man is?\u2014a 12- or 14-year-old boy because what does he do?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says in 1 Samuel 17 that the warriors \/ trained men were afraid and fearful. They pulled away from the battle line; but a boy says, \u201cWho is this uncircumcised Philistine\u201d\u2014that means he\u2019s not a man of God\u2014\u201cwho would challenge us?\u201d\u00a0 What does he do?\u00a0 He says, \u201cA man has to go fight him,\u201d and they are like, \u201cWhat is this dude doing?\u201d\u00a0 His brothers are mad, but he rejects passivity. I look at that passage and think: \u201cA bunch of boys that look like men, and one boy <em>who\u2019s a man<\/em> because he lives out the first pillar of rejecting passivity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you a couple of examples. I was\u2014my oldest, CJ, is 29. When he was like eight years old, I went over to his school one day\u2014this Christian school. I went over and had lunch. There was playground afterwards. I went out on the playground, and I\u2019m an old quarterback. We started playing touch football with all the guys out there; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get my little team; and I throw a ball to this kid that was a friend of my son, CJ. CJ\u2019s an engineer; and he had a buddy, Timmy, who\u2019s an engineer\u2014just really smart kid but not really athletic. I wanted all the kids to get involved\u2014so, I throw a pass to Timmy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just drops it because he can\u2019t catch, and the guy guarding him is the best athlete in school\u2014a little guy named Ben. He goes: \u201cHey, Timmy, you suck, man!\u00a0 You\u2019re pathetic!\u201d When I heard that, Timmy just put his head down and walked back. I could tell this is what he hears every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when I was a boy\u2014and I\u2019m talking 25\/28 years old\u2014you know what I would have done?\u2014nothing. I would have heard that and I would have just been like: \u201cOkay, guys. Get in the huddle.\u201d\u00a0 But now, that I am a man, and I hear that\u2014a man rejects passivity. And I\u2019m not going to go punch the kid, but a man needs to step in\u2014say: \u201cHey, Ben,\u201d\u2014I knew the kid\u2014\u201cHey, we don\u2019t talk like that. I don\u2019t want to hear another word like that about Timmy; you hear me?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 And so, he did\u2014he behaved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, 10\/15 plays later, I wanted to get Timmy involved\u2014he was right here. I threw him a pass, and he dropped it. Guess who went off: \u201cThat guy\u2019s pathetic!\u00a0 You\u2019re the worst\u2026\u201d\u2014he just went off\u2014and I lost it. I walked over\u2014I grabbed him from the back of the\u2014I didn\u2019t hurt him. I just picked him up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started walking to the school, and he\u2019s kicking his little feet; you know?\u00a0 And there was a woman there \/ a teacher by the door; and I just said, \u201cHey, this young man needs to go in the school.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe looks at me and goes, \u201cAnd you are who?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I go: \u201cOh, I\u2019m Dave Wilson. I\u2019m CJ\u2019s dad.\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cAnd what do you doing with him?\u201d\u00a0 She was like defending him; right?\u00a0 \u201cWell, he needs to go in because he has been sort of belligerent out there.\u201d\u00a0 And then<em>, he<\/em> goes\u2014and she\u2019s looking at me, like, \u201cNo, that\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cYes, this dad\u2014I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing, Mr. Wilson. Who do you think you are?!\u201d\u00a0 She saw that and she goes, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re going inside.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And she took him in; right?\u00a0 And that was the end of the day; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, a week later, I\u2019m at parent\/teacher conferences at that school. I\u2019m in a class, and I\u2019m just getting ready to leave that class. I just turned, and this woman walks up to me\u2014I\u2019ve never met her before. She goes, \u201cAre you Dave Wilson?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre you CJ Wilson\u2019s dad?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOh, this is Ben\u2019s mom,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I first thought. I go, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And she starts <em>weeping<\/em>. I go, \u201cCan I help you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe goes: \u201cI\u2019m Timmy\u2019s mom. Timmy told me that you defended him to the bully last week on the playground. I just want to say to you, \u2018Thank you.\u2019\u00a0 You made my little boy feel like a man and like he was valuable. Thank you!\u201d Guys, I was <em>weeping<\/em> as I heard this. What did I do?\u2014rejected passivity\u2014that\u2019s all I did. A real man rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talked about this one time at my church. One of the guys in my small group came up to me, years ago, and he goes, \u201cDude, do you know they are selling porn at the Mobile station right by our house?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cNo, I had no idea.\u201d\u00a0 This was back when they had magazines. He goes: \u201cYes, I went in there. I told them, \u2018I want this out of this gas station because my kids go to this high school and they live near here.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cThey just laughed at me.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019m taking some men back in\u2014you in?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m in.\u201d\u00a0 So, we walk in this Mobile station. I\u2019m telling you\u2014we weren\u2019t idiots\u2014we were very graceful and tender but <em>firm<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe stood there, as men in the community, and said, \u201cWe are asking you to remove this porn.\u201d They <em>did<\/em> because some men came together and did what?\u2014rejected passivity. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here is the deal\u2014as I was thinking about this week, I thought, \u201cOkay, I want to challenge you to reject passivity in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 I sat right over there, Monday night, when Kirk Cameron came up here. I don\u2019t know if you heard what he said\u2014but if you want to reject passivity in your marriage, do what he said. He said, \u201cStudy your wives.\u201d\u00a0 Do you remember him saying that?\u00a0 He said, \u201cI challenge you guys\u2014study your wives to understand who they are.\u201d\u00a0 Reject passivity\u2014become an expert of her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read a book, years ago, by Willard F. Harley\u2014he\u2019s a counselor in Minnesota. He said: \u201cI\u2019ve counseled 3,000 couples. I can tell you the top five needs of a man and the top five needs of a woman.\u201d\u00a0 He listed them, and he had a chapter on each one. I looked at those top five needs\u2014I read them. I went to Ann and I said: \u201cIs this true?\u00a0 Are these your top five needs?\u201d\u00a0 What am I doing?\u2014studying her \/ rejecting passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got to become an expert of her\u2014I\u2019ve got to meet those needs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know what God really wants from me\u2014I\u2019ve got to meet them. I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014if you guys don\u2019t know the top three\u2014because I showed them to my wife \/ she goes, \u201c<em>That\u2019s exactly<\/em> my top three.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you the top three; alright?\u00a0 You go, after this, and ask your wife if these are her top three. Hers may be different, but study her and find out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cNumber one: affection. Number two: conversation. Number three: openness and honesty.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNumber one: affection. Number two: conversation\u2014honesty and openness.\u201d\u00a0 Do you think he\u2019s right?\u00a0 Oh, yes, they always want us to non-sexually touch them. You know what I mean?\u2014whatever. [Laughter]\u00a0 But they want that, and they long for that. They love to TALK; right?\u2014not just talk; right?\u00a0 And they love it when we are honest \/ we share our struggles\u2014are open; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when I went to Ann\u2014I said to her \/ I said: \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d\u00a0 The number one need of men, according to Harley in this book, back in the 80\u2019s\u2014you know what it was?\u2014sex. Number one: sex. Then, I don\u2019t know if it was respect, but it was sex. So, I go to her and go, \u201cSex isn\u2019t even in your top five!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw one study, years ago, that asked women what they would do, if they could, in their leisure time. Sex came out like 29<sup>th<\/sup>, right before sewing for pleasure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou got to be kidding me?!\u201d\u2014[Laughter] \u2014right?\u00a0 And for men, it was right up there at the top. So, I said to her\u2014I said, \u201cWhy isn\u2019t sex in your top five?\u201d\u00a0 And she goes, \u201cWell, it\u2019s the top three.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d She goes, \u201cThat\u2019s foreplay\u2014affection, conversation, honesty and openness.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cLet\u2019s go talk.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I was just like\u2014it was unbelievable. I was like\u2014okay, guys, you want to reject passivity in your marriage?\u2014study your wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the other thing Kirk said the other night: \u201cServe your wife.\u201d\u00a0 All I wrote down in my notes for you guys\u2014and it is for me, as well, because I do this so badly: \u201cGet off the couch!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, guys: \u201cGet off the couch!\u201d\u00a0 I told my sons, when they got married: \u201cWhenever your wife is up, you are up. If she\u2019s in the kitchen, you\u2019re helping. Don\u2019t lie on the couch playing video game. Don\u2019t lie on the couch and watch football all day. Get off the couch and serve her in any way you can.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love what Tim Keller says\u2014how to apply the gospel to your marriage\u2014he says this: \u201cDo for your spouse what Christ did for you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s applying the gospel to marriage. When we were dead in sin, Christ died for us. He says, \u201cDie for your spouse.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what rejecting passivity looks like for a real man in his marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m going to ask you guys to say it aloud: \u201cA real man is \u2018R\u2019\u2014say, \u2018Rejects passivity.\u2019\u00a0 A real man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Alright. So, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do this four times; alright?\u00a0 We just started with the first one. When you say, \u201cRejects passivity,\u201d it can\u2019t be [Sounding weak] \u201c<em>Rejects passivity<\/em>,\u201d\u2014it has to be manly \/ you\u2019ve got to grunt it out. Try it again\u2014one, two, three: \u201cA real man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>REJECTS PASSIVITY. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Now, that\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about; okay?\u00a0 Here is the \u201cE\u201d\u2014and this is the one I actually got permission from Robert to change. I say this: \u201cA real man engages with God.\u201d\u00a0 Engages\u2014action verb\u2014engages with God\u2014pursues God \/ goes after God. It\u2019s a guy on a kickoff team\u2014coming\/flying down the field. He\u2019ll do whatever it takes to get to that ball. Same thing\u2014you chase down God no matter what. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the reason I wanted this in the four pillars is\u2014I think our culture gets it all messed up. Our culture thinks a man is a man when they\u2019re tough \/ they\u2019re strong; right?\u00a0 The opposite is true. A real man is a man that realizes we are weak, we are sinful, and we are prone to get in big trouble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithout God and His power, we are <em>dead<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a real man\u2014in our culture\u2014man, it\u2019s like\u2014really, in our culture\u2014it\u2019s like: \u201cIf you have Jesus,\u201d or \u201cIf you go to church,\u201d or you\u2014even in the football team\u2014if you go to chapel, they are like: \u201cAh, weak. Weak men need that stuff, but real men don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 No, it\u2019s the opposite. <em>Real <\/em>men realize they are weak and need God\u2014so, they <em>engage<\/em> with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a message from Dave Wilson talking to men onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, back in February. Quit wimping out, becoming passive, unplugging from life, and not engaging in the tough, hard work of relationships. The chaplain of the Detroit Lions football team, Dave Wilson, huddled the men together; and he gave them quite a pep talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Those guys absolutely loved this, and you\u2019re going to love this too\u2014whether you are a man or a woman \/ whether you are single or married. I\u2019m just telling you\u2014if this doesn\u2019t light your fire, your wood is wet. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, Dave is just a great guy\u2014pastors a church near Detroit of over 15,000 people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s one of our speakers at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway, and he rocked the boat. [Laughter]\u00a0 He <em>rocked<\/em> the boat on the cruise that we did last Valentine\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can I just say\u2014I don\u2019t know how many of our listeners have heard us mention the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise and have thought: \u201cOh, I\u2019ve been on a cruise. I love challenging men to be men. I call it \u201cReal Men\u201d\u2014four-pillar manhood is taking the word, \u201creal\u201d\u2014R-E-A-L\u2014and saying, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014making an acrostic of it\u2014and \u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to challenge you, as men, to be husbands and dads\u2014but, really, to understand: \u201cWhat is a man? What is a fourth-pillar man?\u00a0 I think you know this\u2014this is really important for us\u2014to know what a man is \/ to know what a vision of manhood is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I\u2019ve listened to Voddie talk so many times. I was watching TV the other night, with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> DVD manhood series\u2014and Voddie was talking about the three B\u2019s that define a man. Have you seen this? Men in our culture are defined by \u201cbillfold, ball field, or bedroom.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really true. He said: \u201cYou\u2019ve got cash\u2014you\u2019ve got a lot of cash \/ a lot of possessions\u2014you\u2019re a man,\u201d \u201cYou do something on a ball field \/ any ball field\u2014you\u2019re an athlete\u2014you\u2019re a man,\u201d or, \u201cIf you have a lot of women\u2026\u201d\u2014right?\u2014that\u2019s our culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about that as I was watching the other night\u2014I thought\u2014I walk into a locker room almost every day, during the fall, with the Detroit Lions\u2014for 30 years, I\u2019ve been doing this. Every one of those guys is defined by that. They\u2019ve got cash \/ they\u2019ve got stuff; they\u2019ve got women; they are at the highest level you can be in their career\u2014and most of the guys in that locker room\u2014guess what\u2014they are boys \/ they are not men. Every year, I talk about the four pillars of manhood with these guys. They walk up to me and say: \u201cI\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> heard any of this. I\u2019ve <em>never <\/em>seen this. Can you help me become that guy?\u201d\u00a0 This stuff, I believe, is just critical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur boys don\u2019t know what a man is. I mean, in our culture, when does a boy become a man?\u00a0 In <em>Stepping Up<\/em>, they went out and asked men that \/ asked women that: \u201cWhen does a boy\u2026\u201d\u2014nobody knew. One guy said, \u201cWhen he has sex.\u201d\u00a0 Let me ask you guys, \u201cDid you become a man when you had sex?\u201d\u2014show of hands. Yes\u2014no hands are going up\u2014it\u2019s like you would, but that didn\u2019t do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur sons need a vision of what a man looks like. Our daughters need to see one so that they don\u2019t settle for something less when they get married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur wives\u2014let me tell you\u2014our wives are <em>longing<\/em> for a man\u2014a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to get right into it because here is what I did. If you guys have ever read Robert Lewis\u2019s material\u2014<em>Men\u2019s Fraternity<\/em> or <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014how many of you know what I\u2019m talking about?\u00a0 Yes, <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014I got it as a young father\u2014I\u2019ve got three sons now. My oldest is 29, 27, and 25. They are all married, and that was my guide book to raise boys to men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that book, <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014which I think applies to fathers with daughters as well\u2014but it\u2019s really a definition of manhood \/ gives you a vision of manhood. Then, he has four sort of characteristics\u2014I\u2019m going to use three of them\u2014and I changed the \u201cE.\u201d\u00a0 He uses the same letters in a different order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting on a bus with Robert Lewis, back in the early 90\u2019s. I was talking to him about the pillars\u2014I don\u2019t know if he even called them pillars. I said, \u201cRobert, would it be okay if I took your pillars and put them in a different word?\u2014because it comes out, \u2018Real\u2019!\u2014and can I change the E?\u201d\u00a0 And he goes: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDude, you do <em>whatever<\/em> you want with this. I want men to know what a man is. So, do whatever you want.\u201d\u00a0 So, I took his three and changed the \u201cE.\u201d I\u2019m going to give you my spin on that\u2014and again, it\u2019s just \u201cGet real\u2014R-E-A-L.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe \u201cR\u201d is the same one Robert has in his book, and some of you know what it is: \u201cWhat\u2019s real man?\u2014he what?\u201d Yes, some of you said it: \u201cA real man rejects passivity.\u201d\u00a0 If you want to write this down, write it down; or put it in your phone: \u201cA real man rejects passivity.\u201d That basically comes from\u2014and I think Robert is the first one I ever heard talk about this. In Genesis, Chapter 1, we have Adam and Eve\u2014first man \/ first woman. You talk about what a man <em>shouldn\u2019t be<\/em>\u2014Adam \/ what a man <em>should be<\/em>\u2014Jesus\u2014and you\u2019ll see this in these four pillars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdam represented all four pillars to the negative\u2014he didn\u2019t accomplish any of them. Jesus accomplished all of them\u2014He rejected passivity to come from heaven to earth and save our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdam is in the Garden\u2014some of you know this story. When Adam and Eve sinned\u2014when Eve bites of the fruit, where was Adam?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Right beside her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Yes, many of you know this\u2014but if you\u2019ve never read this or had anybody teach about this\u2014I remember when I first heard Robert teach about this. I had <em>no idea<\/em> that Genesis 3:6 said this: \u201cWhen the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some of it and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, we don\u2019t know exactly if they are sitting on a tree \/ sitting on a log\u2014but where was Adam?\u2014right here. So, if you understand Scripture, God told whom about the tree they shouldn\u2019t [eat from]?\u2014Adam or Eve?\u2014God told Adam. He told the man because that\u2019s the fourth pillar\u2014you\u2019ve got to lead. Don\u2019t write it down yet\u2014we\u2019ll get there. So, he communicated to Eve what God said. He took the revelation from God and led his wife and told her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when they are sitting there\u2014and Adam is right beside her\u2014and Satan in the snake tempts them and twists the word of God and said: \u201cThat isn\u2019t what God said. He doesn\u2019t want you to eat it because He doesn\u2019t want you to be like Him,\u201d\u2014what should have Adam done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe should have said: \u201cEve, don\u2019t listen to him. That\u2019s a lie!\u00a0 It\u2019s a lie from the pit of hell!\u00a0 I\u2019m going to kill this thing right now.\u201d\u00a0 No. What does Adam do?\u2014passivity \/ he\u2019s passive. I don\u2019t know what he thought\u2014I mean, had to be thinking, \u201cThat\u2019s not what God said\u201d; but what did he do?\u2014he sat there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you realize we live in a culture, in America, of passive men?\u00a0 I read a stat the other day that said, \u201cThis is the first time in American history that women are stronger than men.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s becoming a matriarchal society. I think it\u2019s <em>awesome<\/em> that women are strong\u2014I love that\u2014but let me tell you, \u201cGod calls men to stop being passive and be men.\u201d I\u2019m not saying to become a dictator and an idiot and you fight everybody. I\u2019m just saying, \u201cThere needs to be strength and firmness in a man\u2019s life that leads his woman.\u201d\u00a0 Your wife is <em>longing<\/em> for you to lead her, and most of that is just rejecting passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the reason we say, \u201creject passivity\u201d is we all have a streak of passivity. I mean, I read that story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and I\u2019m like: \u201cCome on, dude!\u00a0 Come on, Adam, step up!\u201d\u00a0 Then, I look at my own heart; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m passive so often!\u201d\u00a0 So, what we are saying is\u2014when that passivity is there \/ when you are in a situation and you think, \u201cMan, somebody needs to do something,\u201d DO SOMETHING!\u00a0 Boys are passive \/ men act! When it\u2019s there, it is like, \u201cI\u2019ve got to reject that.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s going to be there\u2014\u201cWhen I feel that passivity, I\u2019ve got to fight against it \/ I\u2019ve got to reject it, and I\u2019ve got to go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I remember when I first started dating Ann. She said to me\u2014like three or four weeks in\u2014she goes: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I realize why I am falling in love with you.\u201d\u00a0 And I go, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cYou\u2019re the first strong leader-man I\u2019ve ever dated.\u201d\u00a0 She goes: \u201cI didn\u2019t realize this before, but I\u2019ve been dating boys. Now, I\u2019m dating a man.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou\u2019ve got that right, baby!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know what I mean?\u00a0 And I was just figuring out what a man was\u2014<em>I really<\/em> didn\u2019t even know what a man was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>It was like\u2014as I grew <em>into<\/em> a man\u2014and I say to the men at my church\u2014I don\u2019t have time to get into this\u2014but I say: \u201cI became a man at age 32. A lot of you did before that, but here is what happened at 32,\u201d\u2014and this is a whole other sermon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t have time\u2014but number one, I understood what the four pillars were; and I started to live them out. That\u2019s when you start becoming a man\u2014when you start rejecting passivity, engaging with God, accepting responsibility, and leading with courage. You know\u2014write those down. We\u2019ll go through each one of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But the <em>other <\/em>thing that I did, at age 32\u2014that I started at age 28\u2014but it took me that long\u2014is I forgave my dad. I don\u2019t have time to get into it, but I had a dad that walked out on our family when I was seven years old\u2014took me on vacations with his mistresses, as a toddler. Left my mom\u2014dad left me and my brother with a single mom. My brother died six weeks later of leukemia\u2014my five-year-old brother. I had to forgive my dad, in my 20s; and God took me on this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget\u2014I read a quote by Lewis Smedes in a book called <em>Forgive &amp; Forget<\/em>. He said, \u201cWhen you forgive someone, you set a prisoner free\u2014only to discover you are the prisoner.\u201d\u00a0 I realized, \u201cAll of this bitterness I\u2019ve been harboring toward my dad\u2014all those years was not locking him up\u2014it was locking me up from being the real man that God called me to be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m telling you\u2014it took a long time; but when God gave me the power\u2014I didn\u2019t have the power\u2014but when God did that through me, and I forgave my dad, I became free to become a four-pillar man. That\u2019s where the journey, for me, really started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, reject passivity is just this\u2014I mean, I could talk about that all morning. In fact, when I do the chapel with the Lions, we do one pillar a week. Even one\u2014we take half the season to just talk about. So, I\u2019m going to try and do all four really quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I did in our last chapel for the Lions\u2014I used the David and Goliath story to talk about the four pillars. I\u2019ll just do it really quickly. If you want to go to 1 Samuel 17, you can pull it up in your Bible or on your phone. I\u2019m not going to read them exactly because I don\u2019t have time; but many of you know the David and Goliath story; right?\u00a0 We know it; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, think about this\u2014we\u2019ve got a battle between the Philistines and the Israelites\u2014God\u2019s chosen people and the enemy of God. There is one man \/ a giant, and a boy goes out. Of all the men there\u2014who were warriors ready to fight\u2014guess who the man is?\u2014a 12- or 14-year-old boy because what does he do?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt says in 1 Samuel 17 that the warriors \/ trained men were afraid and fearful. They pulled away from the battle line; but a boy says, \u201cWho is this uncircumcised Philistine\u201d\u2014that means he\u2019s not a man of God\u2014\u201cwho would challenge us?\u201d\u00a0 What does he do?\u00a0 He says, \u201cA man has to go fight him,\u201d and they are like, \u201cWhat is this dude doing?\u201d\u00a0 His brothers are mad, but he rejects passivity. I look at that passage and think: \u201cA bunch of boys that look like men, and one boy <em>who\u2019s a man<\/em> because he lives out the first pillar of rejecting passivity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you a couple of examples. I was\u2014my oldest, CJ, is 29. When he was like eight years old, I went over to his school one day\u2014this Christian school. I went over and had lunch. There was playground afterwards. I went out on the playground, and I\u2019m an old quarterback. We started playing touch football with all the guys out there; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get my little team; and I throw a ball to this kid that was a friend of my son, CJ. CJ\u2019s an engineer; and he had a buddy, Timmy, who\u2019s an engineer\u2014just really smart kid but not really athletic. I wanted all the kids to get involved\u2014so, I throw a pass to Timmy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just drops it because he can\u2019t catch, and the guy guarding him is the best athlete in school\u2014a little guy named Ben. He goes: \u201cHey, Timmy, you suck, man!\u00a0 You\u2019re pathetic!\u201d When I heard that, Timmy just put his head down and walked back. I could tell this is what he hears every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when I was a boy\u2014and I\u2019m talking 25\/28 years old\u2014you know what I would have done?\u2014nothing. I would have heard that and I would have just been like: \u201cOkay, guys. Get in the huddle.\u201d\u00a0 But now, that I am a man, and I hear that\u2014a man rejects passivity. And I\u2019m not going to go punch the kid, but a man needs to step in\u2014say: \u201cHey, Ben,\u201d\u2014I knew the kid\u2014\u201cHey, we don\u2019t talk like that. I don\u2019t want to hear another word like that about Timmy; you hear me?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 And so, he did\u2014he behaved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, 10\/15 plays later, I wanted to get Timmy involved\u2014he was right here. I threw him a pass, and he dropped it. Guess who went off: \u201cThat guy\u2019s pathetic!\u00a0 You\u2019re the worst\u2026\u201d\u2014he just went off\u2014and I lost it. I walked over\u2014I grabbed him from the back of the\u2014I didn\u2019t hurt him. I just picked him up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started walking to the school, and he\u2019s kicking his little feet; you know?\u00a0 And there was a woman there \/ a teacher by the door; and I just said, \u201cHey, this young man needs to go in the school.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe looks at me and goes, \u201cAnd you are who?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I go: \u201cOh, I\u2019m Dave Wilson. I\u2019m CJ\u2019s dad.\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cAnd what do you doing with him?\u201d\u00a0 She was like defending him; right?\u00a0 \u201cWell, he needs to go in because he has been sort of belligerent out there.\u201d\u00a0 And then<em>, he<\/em> goes\u2014and she\u2019s looking at me, like, \u201cNo, that\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cYes, this dad\u2014I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing, Mr. Wilson. Who do you think you are?!\u201d\u00a0 She saw that and she goes, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re going inside.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And she took him in; right?\u00a0 And that was the end of the day; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, a week later, I\u2019m at parent\/teacher conferences at that school. I\u2019m in a class, and I\u2019m just getting ready to leave that class. I just turned, and this woman walks up to me\u2014I\u2019ve never met her before. She goes, \u201cAre you Dave Wilson?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre you CJ Wilson\u2019s dad?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOh, this is Ben\u2019s mom,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I first thought. I go, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And she starts <em>weeping<\/em>. I go, \u201cCan I help you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe goes: \u201cI\u2019m Timmy\u2019s mom. Timmy told me that you defended him to the bully last week on the playground. I just want to say to you, \u2018Thank you.\u2019\u00a0 You made my little boy feel like a man and like he was valuable. Thank you!\u201d Guys, I was <em>weeping<\/em> as I heard this. What did I do?\u2014rejected passivity\u2014that\u2019s all I did. A real man rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talked about this one time at my church. One of the guys in my small group came up to me, years ago, and he goes, \u201cDude, do you know they are selling porn at the Mobile station right by our house?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cNo, I had no idea.\u201d\u00a0 This was back when they had magazines. He goes: \u201cYes, I went in there. I told them, \u2018I want this out of this gas station because my kids go to this high school and they live near here.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cThey just laughed at me.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019m taking some men back in\u2014you in?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m in.\u201d\u00a0 So, we walk in this Mobile station. I\u2019m telling you\u2014we weren\u2019t idiots\u2014we were very graceful and tender but <em>firm<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe stood there, as men in the community, and said, \u201cWe are asking you to remove this porn.\u201d They <em>did<\/em> because some men came together and did what?\u2014rejected passivity. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here is the deal\u2014as I was thinking about this week, I thought, \u201cOkay, I want to challenge you to reject passivity in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 I sat right over there, Monday night, when Kirk Cameron came up here. I don\u2019t know if you heard what he said\u2014but if you want to reject passivity in your marriage, do what he said. He said, \u201cStudy your wives.\u201d\u00a0 Do you remember him saying that?\u00a0 He said, \u201cI challenge you guys\u2014study your wives to understand who they are.\u201d\u00a0 Reject passivity\u2014become an expert of her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read a book, years ago, by Willard F. Harley\u2014he\u2019s a counselor in Minnesota. He said: \u201cI\u2019ve counseled 3,000 couples. I can tell you the top five needs of a man and the top five needs of a woman.\u201d\u00a0 He listed them, and he had a chapter on each one. I looked at those top five needs\u2014I read them. I went to Ann and I said: \u201cIs this true?\u00a0 Are these your top five needs?\u201d\u00a0 What am I doing?\u2014studying her \/ rejecting passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got to become an expert of her\u2014I\u2019ve got to meet those needs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know what God really wants from me\u2014I\u2019ve got to meet them. I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014if you guys don\u2019t know the top three\u2014because I showed them to my wife \/ she goes, \u201c<em>That\u2019s exactly<\/em> my top three.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you the top three; alright?\u00a0 You go, after this, and ask your wife if these are her top three. Hers may be different, but study her and find out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cNumber one: affection. Number two: conversation. Number three: openness and honesty.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNumber one: affection. Number two: conversation\u2014honesty and openness.\u201d\u00a0 Do you think he\u2019s right?\u00a0 Oh, yes, they always want us to non-sexually touch them. You know what I mean?\u2014whatever. [Laughter]\u00a0 But they want that, and they long for that. They love to TALK; right?\u2014not just talk; right?\u00a0 And they love it when we are honest \/ we share our struggles\u2014are open; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when I went to Ann\u2014I said to her \/ I said: \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d\u00a0 The number one need of men, according to Harley in this book, back in the 80\u2019s\u2014you know what it was?\u2014sex. Number one: sex. Then, I don\u2019t know if it was respect, but it was sex. So, I go to her and go, \u201cSex isn\u2019t even in your top five!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw one study, years ago, that asked women what they would do, if they could, in their leisure time. Sex came out like 29<sup>th<\/sup>, right before sewing for pleasure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou got to be kidding me?!\u201d\u2014[Laughter] \u2014right?\u00a0 And for men, it was right up there at the top. So, I said to her\u2014I said, \u201cWhy isn\u2019t sex in your top five?\u201d\u00a0 And she goes, \u201cWell, it\u2019s the top three.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d She goes, \u201cThat\u2019s foreplay\u2014affection, conversation, honesty and openness.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cLet\u2019s go talk.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I was just like\u2014it was unbelievable. I was like\u2014okay, guys, you want to reject passivity in your marriage?\u2014study your wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the other thing Kirk said the other night: \u201cServe your wife.\u201d\u00a0 All I wrote down in my notes for you guys\u2014and it is for me, as well, because I do this so badly: \u201cGet off the couch!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, guys: \u201cGet off the couch!\u201d\u00a0 I told my sons, when they got married: \u201cWhenever your wife is up, you are up. If she\u2019s in the kitchen, you\u2019re helping. Don\u2019t lie on the couch playing video game. Don\u2019t lie on the couch and watch football all day. Get off the couch and serve her in any way you can.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love what Tim Keller says\u2014how to apply the gospel to your marriage\u2014he says this: \u201cDo for your spouse what Christ did for you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s applying the gospel to marriage. When we were dead in sin, Christ died for us. He says, \u201cDie for your spouse.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what rejecting passivity looks like for a real man in his marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m going to ask you guys to say it aloud: \u201cA real man is \u2018R\u2019\u2014say, \u2018Rejects passivity.\u2019\u00a0 A real man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Rejects passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Alright. So, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do this four times; alright?\u00a0 We just started with the first one. When you say, \u201cRejects passivity,\u201d it can\u2019t be [Sounding weak] \u201c<em>Rejects passivity<\/em>,\u201d\u2014it has to be manly \/ you\u2019ve got to grunt it out. Try it again\u2014one, two, three: \u201cA real man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>REJECTS PASSIVITY. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dave: <\/strong>Now, that\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about; okay?\u00a0 Here is the \u201cE\u201d\u2014and this is the one I actually got permission from Robert to change. I say this: \u201cA real man engages with God.\u201d\u00a0 Engages\u2014action verb\u2014engages with God\u2014pursues God \/ goes after God. It\u2019s a guy on a kickoff team\u2014coming\/flying down the field. He\u2019ll do whatever it takes to get to that ball. Same thing\u2014you chase down God no matter what. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the reason I wanted this in the four pillars is\u2014I think our culture gets it all messed up. Our culture thinks a man is a man when they\u2019re tough \/ they\u2019re strong; right?\u00a0 The opposite is true. A real man is a man that realizes we are weak, we are sinful, and we are prone to get in big trouble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithout God and His power, we are <em>dead<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a real man\u2014in our culture\u2014man, it\u2019s like\u2014really, in our culture\u2014it\u2019s like: \u201cIf you have Jesus,\u201d or \u201cIf you go to church,\u201d or you\u2014even in the football team\u2014if you go to chapel, they are like: \u201cAh, weak. Weak men need that stuff, but real men don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 No, it\u2019s the opposite. <em>Real <\/em>men realize they are weak and need God\u2014so, they <em>engage<\/em> with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a message from Dave Wilson talking to men onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, back in February.
