Two, I\u2019d spent my whole life building great teams in organizations\u2014I thought, \u201cGosh, if I could go do that to the least of these\u2014Lord, would that be great!\u201d Then, third\u2014which really goes to our belief\u2014I can still remember coming home that Thursday morning and saying to my wife, \u201cI think this is God\u2019s call for us.\u201d\u00a0 And so, we came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, May 18<sup>th<\/sup>. When you put together the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series, you never imagined that you\u2019d wind up in prison and having dinner with the homeless; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, first of all, I wrote the <em>book<\/em>, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014you put together the video series. [Laughter] So, the question is better asked of you, Bob: \u201cWhen you put together the video series called <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood<\/em>, did you ever\u2014did you ever think it would be used among prisoners or homeless men?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let\u2019s be honest. Neither of us had any idea that that\u2019s how God might use this tool. In fact, that was not whom we had in mind. We just had guys in mind, and we knew that there are some common things that guys are wrestling with. It doesn\u2019t matter whether they are in boardrooms or whether they don\u2019t have a bedroom; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and we\u2019ve got a couple of warriors from the frontlines of homeless missions. Ricky Hall and Jim Reese join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jim, Ricky, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>It is great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been to your place. So, we\u2019ve got you on our home turf now behind a microphone. I\u2019ve been looking forward to chatting with you. Ricky heads up the Spiritual Life of the Atlanta Mission in Atlanta, Georgia, of course; and Jim Reese is the CEO and President of Atlanta Mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said you\u2019ve been to their place. Tell our listeners about how you wound up at their place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, but, Bob, that\u2019s kind of getting to the heart of the story!\u00a0 I\u2019ll give our listeners just a little taste. I was invited by a good friend of mine, Crawford Loritts, who twisted my arm and said, \u201cYou must meet Jim Reese.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, they just took a group of homeless men through <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The video series. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the ten-part series\u2014\u201cand they want to invite you to come over there and speak at the graduation.\u201d\u00a0 Little did I know that, not only would I have the privilege of going, but that it would be such a delightful eye-opening experience to participate with these men in their ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Jim, what I want to do\u2014kind of before we get to <em>that<\/em> story\u2014I just want to talk about who you are \/ where you came from\u2014and you as well, Ricky\u2014but take us back to when you were a child. You had an interesting start as a boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, you know, Dennis, for me, my mom\u2014I\u2019m the oldest of three boys. When I was five years old, my dad left my mom. My mom was a waitress. There were two of us boys that she could still take care of. My youngest brother\u2014she actually had my aunt and uncle take care of. A couple of years later, she would marry who would be my stepdad; and they would be married the rest of their lives. My mom would be an alcoholic\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and not a very functional family. But a call\u2014I\u2019m not sure how\u2014but the Lord had placed on my life, at a young age, Dennis\u2014but it was interesting in my house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there anything going on spiritually in your home as you were growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, on my mom\u2019s side, there were people who were, really, I would say, strong spiritually. My stepdad was Catholic. We never went to church. We actually lived in a house that was owned by missionaries. The interesting part of that was\u2014when they came back to visit every few years, they had a boy that was about my age. We would hit it off, and we went to church camp. We lived next to people who went to a church\u2014really an evangelical church\u2014and they would take us to that in the summer. And that had an impact on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The spiritual turning point in your life happened one night when you were looking at the moon; is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, when I was a little boy\u2014I was about eight years old, Bob. It was\u2014again, our family situation wasn\u2019t great. It was really bad, and there was a full moon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked out the window. It was like the Lord looked down and said to me, \u201cI really have a plan for you, Jim,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ll never forget it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He just impressed you that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be okay. I\u2019m going to be with you. I\u2019ve got a plan,\u201d\u2014because I didn\u2019t feel, based on the house I was growing up in, that you could have a plan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were pretty successful in the marketplace; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Very successful in the marketplace. I started with Post<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Cereals\/General Foods in Battle Creek, Michigan. I spent eight years there\u2014I went to school, eight years, at night. I finished my college degree, going to school, while I worked full-time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe spent a couple years in New York, where my oldest daughter was born\u2014still with General Foods. Six years in Jacksonville, Florida, where I actually ran the world\u2019s largest coffee plant\u2014Maxwell\u2019s Coffee in Jacksonville, Florida. My other two daughters were born there. And then, we moved, about 23\/24 years ago, to Atlanta, where I became Vice President of all operations for Frito Lay<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> South Division. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, in a moment, I\u2019m going to ask you to answer a question that I <em>love<\/em> to ask men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know about this question because it\u2019s the way the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series begins; but I don\u2019t want you to answer it right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That question is\u2014go ahead, you can ask yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right, Dennis?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I want to turn to you, Ricky, and get your story. Take us back to your home. Did you grow up in a Christian family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Indeed, I did. I was tremendously blessed. Being an African American, I know it\u2019s been chronicled, through the news media, about the lack of the father in the home. The Lord blessed me not to have to deal with it. My dad has been one of the greatest men in my life\u2014one of the greatest men I\u2019ve ever known now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way God works, as only He can\u2014my dad didn\u2019t grow up with his father. He became the man of his house at nine years old. That boy\u2014that impact on his life was so great that he purposed that: \u201cIf God blesses me with a family, I\u2019m going to do everything I can to be a man in my boys\u2019 lives; and I\u2019ll take care of my wife.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents have been married nearly 60 years! I speak to my father every single day to this point. Now, I\u2019m not 16 years old; but I need him just as much now, heading into my 50s, as I did when I was 16. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you were growing up in Birmingham, it was a period where there was racial tension; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Indeed. My father really lived in the midst of those times and told me many powerful stories. God sovereignly used those experiences to help forge a faith in him\u2014that he was more focused upon God and never taught us any racial division. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord blessed me that I eventually went into ministry, after a period of really questioning that and running that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school and studied journalism and sociology and was headed towards being a reporter. I was in college, working for my local newspaper, and sitting in the newsroom on Sunday. There was an image of guy on TV\u2014it was a newscaster. Of course, I don\u2019t have anything against what that profession is\u2014but I turned and looked at the TV screen\u2014and I felt the Spirit of the Lord impress me and tell me: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that that person is doing, right now, that\u2019s making an impact in eternity. So, what are you going to do?\u201d\u00a0 At that moment, I felt like God was showing me where I was going to be in 20 years if I didn\u2019t follow Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, at that point, I knew I couldn\u2019t keep on the path that I was on. Now, I didn\u2019t know where I was headed; but I knew, at that point, God had called me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve been knowing that my whole life and just was running. At that point, I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to run anymore.\u201d That would eventually lead me to the mission field in Africa, where I have served for a number of years, leading short-term mission trips. The Lord has always given me a heart for the poor and the needy. I had no idea I would end up here. I planted a church\u2014helped plant churches overseas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, long story short\u2014God has uniquely positioned me in this place, at this time, and connected me with Jim. We kind of joke sometimes how God would bring our paths together \u201cfor such a time as this,\u201d\u2014me, being African American, and Jim having a heart that he has for the Lord\u2014it just seems like it\u2019s a great, great fit for me to be a part of the mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should probably make the long story a little longer because as you described it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014missionary in Africa \/ lots of experience\u2014Jim, you are in corporate America, heading up. You both wind up at the Atlanta Homeless Mission; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, here\u2019s my question\u2014I want to find out what Ricky\u2019s most courageous thing he\u2019s ever done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>I had planted a church in Athens, Georgia, and had been a pastor for eight years. As part of my work with the church, we had an outreach to the Potter\u2019s House in Jefferson, Georgia, which is a part of the Atlanta Mission. We picked up guys for services. I actually had volunteered with the mission and did chapel services at the Potter\u2019s House for about eight years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord opened a door because of some mission work\u2014that I was asked to take position as a counselor. I tried to continue to balance being a counselor, and being a dad, and being a husband, and leading a church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just very difficult. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to answer that question, the most courageous thing that I feel I have ever done is\u2014I prayed and felt like God had led me to step down from the church that I planted so I could come, full time, to help men who needed some guidance. Little did I know\u2014and as we know, how ministry works\u2014sometimes, we think we are going to help other people. Really, God is putting us in the position for us to be helped ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, unpack that a little bit. How has that happened for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>My brother, who has just recently passed away, had estranged himself from our family. My dad\u2019s a godly man \/ my mom\u2014a Christian woman\u2014but it was one of those dysfunctional parts of our family that was kind of private and secret for a long time. I\u2019d seen him cause my parents great pain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn all honesty, I took offense and resentment toward him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in the ministry, I did not like my brother. That resentment and that unforgiveness\u2014it affected me in a very negative way. I felt like it hurt my relationship with my wife, at times \/ with my son. Honestly, in helping other people, that was the one spot that I needed help\u2014and I couldn\u2019t see it. When I went to work at the Potter\u2019s House, and started helping alcoholics and addicts with issues of unforgiveness, God healed <em>me<\/em> at the Potter\u2019s House. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You forgave your brother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>I forgave him, and God restored my heart. Now, my brother didn\u2019t change; but I changed. I began to love him. I began to love his family and reach out to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the Lord did was\u2014through me being able to be healed of that unforgiveness, it allowed me to really have a greater impact in the ministry to our men. Sharing that story has been a great, great impact in my ability to relate to our guys and what they go through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things we don\u2019t realize is\u2014when we have not forgiven someone, it is not <em>them<\/em>\u2014the person we haven\u2019t forgiven\u2014who is in prison. It\u2019s <em>us<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>That is so true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, when you forgive them, it\u2019s <em>you<\/em> who gets set free. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim, I\u2019m coming around to you. I gave you plenty of time to think this through. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, Dennis, I think, for me, it was the decision when I really did decide to come to the mission\u2014I didn\u2019t expect it. You know, I had left the business world\u2014I had all my friends in business saying: \u201cGod\u2019s given you an incredible platform in business. Why would you leave that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about that platform for a moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were Regional Vice President or National?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I was CEO of Randstad on their executive board\u2014so, third largest staffing company in the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Fifty-three thousand employees. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Pretty good-sized operation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, I ran US, UK, and Canada, and had global responsibility. <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, what made you even think, \u201cMaybe, I ought to think about this mission\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I had left the business world in \u201905. I was trying to sort through, \u201cGod, what do You want to do?\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t that I felt like I needed to leave business to go into ministry\u2014I just really wasn\u2019t sure, to be honest with you. And then, about two-and-a-half years later, I\u2019d spent about ten months off\u2014lost both parents during that period of time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe guy who had recruited me to Frito Lay, earlier, called me and said: \u201cI think I\u2019ve got a great opportunity for you for the Atlanta\u201d\u2014at that point\u2014\u201cAtlanta Union Mission to be President\/CEO\u2014that would use your faith and your skills really well. What do you know about it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNothing\u201d; and I <em>knew<\/em> nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, the last thing in my mind was that I would ever do urban inner-city ministry to anybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I walked through that with my family\u2014obviously, <em>enormous<\/em> change for my family \/ three daughters and my wife\u2014and the men that I\u2019d been with and my closest friends\u2014I felt God was really telling me three things. I\u2019ve never had Him speak to me before\u2014but I felt like the three things He said to me [were]: \u201cI want you to really be fully dependent upon Me,\u201d\u2014which I intellectually understand\u2014but it is easy preaching \/ hard living. Two, I\u2019d spent my whole life building great teams in organizations\u2014I thought, \u201cGosh, if I could go do that to the least of these\u2014Lord, would that be great!\u201d\u00a0 And then, third\u2014which really goes to our belief\u2014and I\u2014[emotion in voice] sorry, I just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You get emotional about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>[Emotion in voice] Yes. And I can still remember the board had unbelievable faith. They were talking to pastors, and guys from the missions, and this crazy guy, who had been a CEO of a large company. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember coming home that Thursday morning, after being with some of the men\u2014after we\u2019d had a lot of prayer\u2014and saying to my wife, \u201cI think this is God\u2019s call for us.\u201d\u00a0 So, we came. I just pray, Dennis, honestly, that I would have near the impact that it\u2019s had on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And when you say that\u2014back to the question Bob asked Ricky\u2014unpack that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s given me a whole perspective of how much God really loves everybody. You know, the whole racial reconciliation question\u2014that\u2019s been dear to my heart since \u201993 and Promise Keepers\u2014God\u2019s given me an opportunity to do that in a different way than I would have ever expected. But I think to really be able to have friends that I would have never expected to be my friends who are some of the closest friends in my life. And to get up every day and really believe God\u2019s given us an opportunity and a privilege to show Him to people who I absolutely believe could change the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s dramatically made me better appreciate the poor. It\u2019s made me think about things, that I thought were important, that have no importance to me today\u2014and I know how important those were to me\u2014and so, to let those go\u2014I mean, this is a crazy story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, I think I was at the mission about 18 months\u2014and over my career, I loved to play golf. Every place I\u2019d go, I\u2019d buy a golf hat. Well, they are about $25 each; and I looked at my closet\u2014I had about 40. I thought: \u201cOh, my gosh! What kind of steward were you, Jim?\u201440 hats that you never wore.\u201d And I\u2019ve got guys that would die for one!\u00a0 You know, I had plenty of other things God could convict me on besides golf hats; but that happened to be the one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it just\u2014for me, it\u2019s been the incredible privilege to serve and watch God change two lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is in the multiplication business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s had an impact on your own marriage and family too; hasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, my whole family, as I shared, was pretty dysfunctional. In fact, my youngest brother\u2014when both my parents died in \u201905, he just kind of really disappeared a lot\u2014went across the country. About three years ago, my middle brother had found him and said, if he\u2019d come to his house, he would give him a chance to restart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was going through Atlanta. Bob, my wife, paying close attention to details better than me\u2014said: \u201cHey, he\u2019s going to be in Atlanta for four hours on the bus. Why don\u2019t you\u2014maybe you can go see him.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went and had breakfast with him, and shared with him what I was doing, and drove by and asked him how he was doing\u2014because I really hardly knew him. And he shares that he has a drinking problem and binge drinks\u2014which, then, I know\u2014based upon all the people I serve\u2014he\u2019s got a serious drinking problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really asked him where his relationship with Christ was. He had said, \u201cWell, I accepted Him when I was young,\u201d which I knew was really probably not the answer. And I told him he had no hope without that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he left that, and got on the bus and left. That night, he called and said, \u201cJim, I think I need more help.\u201d\u00a0 And I had mentioned to him, when we were together\u2014totally in passing, not even more than a sentence\u2014that if he needed more help, we had a place called the Potter\u2019s House\u2014didn\u2019t think anything of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he calls me that night. He says, \u201cYou know, I think I need more help.\u201d\u00a0 And he says, \u201cI haven\u2019t been able to get the Potter\u2019s House out of my mind all day!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m immediately defensive, as a brother. I\u2019m saying: \u201cYou know, it\u2019s not going to be easy. Just because I\u2019m in charge, don\u2019t think that\u2014it\u2019s really going to be hard. You better go look at the website, and take the next 24 hours and pray, and call me back.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said to me, \u201cWhat if, Jim, God took you out of the business world because He knew I\u2019d need this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh. Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>And I was taken aback. Then, 24 hours later, I talked to him; and he came. He went through our program, and his life\u2019s been transformed. He\u2019d been at the Potter\u2019s House for probably ten days, and I got up and gave chapel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho\u2019s out in about row12 \/ halfway to the left, but my younger brother?\u2014 hearing me share the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn made a statement: \u201cThere are two kinds of problems\u2014those that are far away and those that are near.\u201d\u00a0 When we go near the poor, the orphan, the brokenhearted, we may think we\u2019re the one that is going to provide help; when, as we give our lives away, God comes and meets us in very specific ways and gives back to us in innumerable ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there is more to this story, Bob, that we\u2019ve got to tell; but I\u2019ll just give them a little bit of a hint\u2014God used Jim and Ricky to take 130 homeless men through <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking about the fact that God used our listeners, as well, in this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a lot of them\u2014because some of our listeners, who support <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, had a hand in making the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series possible. Two, I\u2019d spent my whole life building great teams in organizations\u2014I thought, \u201cGosh, if I could go do that to the least of these\u2014Lord, would that be great!\u201d Then, third\u2014which really goes to our belief\u2014I can still remember coming home that Thursday morning and saying to my wife, \u201cI think this is God\u2019s call for us.\u201d\u00a0 And so, we came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, May 18<sup>th<\/sup>. When you put together the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series, you never imagined that you\u2019d wind up in prison and having dinner with the homeless; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, first of all, I wrote the <em>book<\/em>, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014you put together the video series. [Laughter] So, the question is better asked of you, Bob: \u201cWhen you put together the video series called <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood<\/em>, did you ever\u2014did you ever think it would be used among prisoners or homeless men?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Let\u2019s be honest. Neither of us had any idea that that\u2019s how God might use this tool. In fact, that was not whom we had in mind. We just had guys in mind, and we knew that there are some common things that guys are wrestling with. It doesn\u2019t matter whether they are in boardrooms or whether they don\u2019t have a bedroom; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and we\u2019ve got a couple of warriors from the frontlines of homeless missions. Ricky Hall and Jim Reese join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jim, Ricky, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>It is great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been to your place. So, we\u2019ve got you on our home turf now behind a microphone. I\u2019ve been looking forward to chatting with you. Ricky heads up the Spiritual Life of the Atlanta Mission in Atlanta, Georgia, of course; and Jim Reese is the CEO and President of Atlanta Mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said you\u2019ve been to their place. Tell our listeners about how you wound up at their place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, but, Bob, that\u2019s kind of getting to the heart of the story!\u00a0 I\u2019ll give our listeners just a little taste. I was invited by a good friend of mine, Crawford Loritts, who twisted my arm and said, \u201cYou must meet Jim Reese.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, they just took a group of homeless men through <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The video series. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the ten-part series\u2014\u201cand they want to invite you to come over there and speak at the graduation.\u201d\u00a0 Little did I know that, not only would I have the privilege of going, but that it would be such a delightful eye-opening experience to participate with these men in their ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Jim, what I want to do\u2014kind of before we get to <em>that<\/em> story\u2014I just want to talk about who you are \/ where you came from\u2014and you as well, Ricky\u2014but take us back to when you were a child. You had an interesting start as a boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, you know, Dennis, for me, my mom\u2014I\u2019m the oldest of three boys. When I was five years old, my dad left my mom. My mom was a waitress. There were two of us boys that she could still take care of. My youngest brother\u2014she actually had my aunt and uncle take care of. A couple of years later, she would marry who would be my stepdad; and they would be married the rest of their lives. My mom would be an alcoholic\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and not a very functional family. But a call\u2014I\u2019m not sure how\u2014but the Lord had placed on my life, at a young age, Dennis\u2014but it was interesting in my house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there anything going on spiritually in your home as you were growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, on my mom\u2019s side, there were people who were, really, I would say, strong spiritually. My stepdad was Catholic. We never went to church. We actually lived in a house that was owned by missionaries. The interesting part of that was\u2014when they came back to visit every few years, they had a boy that was about my age. We would hit it off, and we went to church camp. We lived next to people who went to a church\u2014really an evangelical church\u2014and they would take us to that in the summer. And that had an impact on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The spiritual turning point in your life happened one night when you were looking at the moon; is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, when I was a little boy\u2014I was about eight years old, Bob. It was\u2014again, our family situation wasn\u2019t great. It was really bad, and there was a full moon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked out the window. It was like the Lord looked down and said to me, \u201cI really have a plan for you, Jim,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ll never forget it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He just impressed you that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be okay. I\u2019m going to be with you. I\u2019ve got a plan,\u201d\u2014because I didn\u2019t feel, based on the house I was growing up in, that you could have a plan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were pretty successful in the marketplace; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Very successful in the marketplace. I started with Post<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Cereals\/General Foods in Battle Creek, Michigan. I spent eight years there\u2014I went to school, eight years, at night. I finished my college degree, going to school, while I worked full-time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe spent a couple years in New York, where my oldest daughter was born\u2014still with General Foods. Six years in Jacksonville, Florida, where I actually ran the world\u2019s largest coffee plant\u2014Maxwell\u2019s Coffee in Jacksonville, Florida. My other two daughters were born there. And then, we moved, about 23\/24 years ago, to Atlanta, where I became Vice President of all operations for Frito Lay<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> South Division. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, in a moment, I\u2019m going to ask you to answer a question that I <em>love<\/em> to ask men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know about this question because it\u2019s the way the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series begins; but I don\u2019t want you to answer it right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That question is\u2014go ahead, you can ask yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right, Dennis?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I want to turn to you, Ricky, and get your story. Take us back to your home. Did you grow up in a Christian family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Indeed, I did. I was tremendously blessed. Being an African American, I know it\u2019s been chronicled, through the news media, about the lack of the father in the home. The Lord blessed me not to have to deal with it. My dad has been one of the greatest men in my life\u2014one of the greatest men I\u2019ve ever known now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way God works, as only He can\u2014my dad didn\u2019t grow up with his father. He became the man of his house at nine years old. That boy\u2014that impact on his life was so great that he purposed that: \u201cIf God blesses me with a family, I\u2019m going to do everything I can to be a man in my boys\u2019 lives; and I\u2019ll take care of my wife.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents have been married nearly 60 years! I speak to my father every single day to this point. Now, I\u2019m not 16 years old; but I need him just as much now, heading into my 50s, as I did when I was 16. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you were growing up in Birmingham, it was a period where there was racial tension; wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Indeed. My father really lived in the midst of those times and told me many powerful stories. God sovereignly used those experiences to help forge a faith in him\u2014that he was more focused upon God and never taught us any racial division. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord blessed me that I eventually went into ministry, after a period of really questioning that and running that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to school and studied journalism and sociology and was headed towards being a reporter. I was in college, working for my local newspaper, and sitting in the newsroom on Sunday. There was an image of guy on TV\u2014it was a newscaster. Of course, I don\u2019t have anything against what that profession is\u2014but I turned and looked at the TV screen\u2014and I felt the Spirit of the Lord impress me and tell me: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that that person is doing, right now, that\u2019s making an impact in eternity. So, what are you going to do?\u201d\u00a0 At that moment, I felt like God was showing me where I was going to be in 20 years if I didn\u2019t follow Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, at that point, I knew I couldn\u2019t keep on the path that I was on. Now, I didn\u2019t know where I was headed; but I knew, at that point, God had called me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve been knowing that my whole life and just was running. At that point, I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to run anymore.\u201d That would eventually lead me to the mission field in Africa, where I have served for a number of years, leading short-term mission trips. The Lord has always given me a heart for the poor and the needy. I had no idea I would end up here. I planted a church\u2014helped plant churches overseas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, long story short\u2014God has uniquely positioned me in this place, at this time, and connected me with Jim. We kind of joke sometimes how God would bring our paths together \u201cfor such a time as this,\u201d\u2014me, being African American, and Jim having a heart that he has for the Lord\u2014it just seems like it\u2019s a great, great fit for me to be a part of the mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should probably make the long story a little longer because as you described it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014missionary in Africa \/ lots of experience\u2014Jim, you are in corporate America, heading up. You both wind up at the Atlanta Homeless Mission; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, here\u2019s my question\u2014I want to find out what Ricky\u2019s most courageous thing he\u2019s ever done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>I had planted a church in Athens, Georgia, and had been a pastor for eight years. As part of my work with the church, we had an outreach to the Potter\u2019s House in Jefferson, Georgia, which is a part of the Atlanta Mission. We picked up guys for services. I actually had volunteered with the mission and did chapel services at the Potter\u2019s House for about eight years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord opened a door because of some mission work\u2014that I was asked to take position as a counselor. I tried to continue to balance being a counselor, and being a dad, and being a husband, and leading a church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just very difficult. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to answer that question, the most courageous thing that I feel I have ever done is\u2014I prayed and felt like God had led me to step down from the church that I planted so I could come, full time, to help men who needed some guidance. Little did I know\u2014and as we know, how ministry works\u2014sometimes, we think we are going to help other people. Really, God is putting us in the position for us to be helped ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, unpack that a little bit. How has that happened for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>My brother, who has just recently passed away, had estranged himself from our family. My dad\u2019s a godly man \/ my mom\u2014a Christian woman\u2014but it was one of those dysfunctional parts of our family that was kind of private and secret for a long time. I\u2019d seen him cause my parents great pain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn all honesty, I took offense and resentment toward him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven in the ministry, I did not like my brother. That resentment and that unforgiveness\u2014it affected me in a very negative way. I felt like it hurt my relationship with my wife, at times \/ with my son. Honestly, in helping other people, that was the one spot that I needed help\u2014and I couldn\u2019t see it. When I went to work at the Potter\u2019s House, and started helping alcoholics and addicts with issues of unforgiveness, God healed <em>me<\/em> at the Potter\u2019s House. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You forgave your brother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>I forgave him, and God restored my heart. Now, my brother didn\u2019t change; but I changed. I began to love him. I began to love his family and reach out to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the Lord did was\u2014through me being able to be healed of that unforgiveness, it allowed me to really have a greater impact in the ministry to our men. Sharing that story has been a great, great impact in my ability to relate to our guys and what they go through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things we don\u2019t realize is\u2014when we have not forgiven someone, it is not <em>them<\/em>\u2014the person we haven\u2019t forgiven\u2014who is in prison. It\u2019s <em>us<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>That is so true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, when you forgive them, it\u2019s <em>you<\/em> who gets set free. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ricky: <\/strong>Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim, I\u2019m coming around to you. I gave you plenty of time to think this through. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, Dennis, I think, for me, it was the decision when I really did decide to come to the mission\u2014I didn\u2019t expect it. You know, I had left the business world\u2014I had all my friends in business saying: \u201cGod\u2019s given you an incredible platform in business. Why would you leave that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about that platform for a moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were Regional Vice President or National?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I was CEO of Randstad on their executive board\u2014so, third largest staffing company in the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Fifty-three thousand employees. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Pretty good-sized operation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes, I ran US, UK, and Canada, and had global responsibility. <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, what made you even think, \u201cMaybe, I ought to think about this mission\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I had left the business world in \u201905. I was trying to sort through, \u201cGod, what do You want to do?\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t that I felt like I needed to leave business to go into ministry\u2014I just really wasn\u2019t sure, to be honest with you. And then, about two-and-a-half years later, I\u2019d spent about ten months off\u2014lost both parents during that period of time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe guy who had recruited me to Frito Lay, earlier, called me and said: \u201cI think I\u2019ve got a great opportunity for you for the Atlanta\u201d\u2014at that point\u2014\u201cAtlanta Union Mission to be President\/CEO\u2014that would use your faith and your skills really well. What do you know about it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNothing\u201d; and I <em>knew<\/em> nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, the last thing in my mind was that I would ever do urban inner-city ministry to anybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I walked through that with my family\u2014obviously, <em>enormous<\/em> change for my family \/ three daughters and my wife\u2014and the men that I\u2019d been with and my closest friends\u2014I felt God was really telling me three things. I\u2019ve never had Him speak to me before\u2014but I felt like the three things He said to me [were]: \u201cI want you to really be fully dependent upon Me,\u201d\u2014which I intellectually understand\u2014but it is easy preaching \/ hard living. Two, I\u2019d spent my whole life building great teams in organizations\u2014I thought, \u201cGosh, if I could go do that to the least of these\u2014Lord, would that be great!\u201d\u00a0 And then, third\u2014which really goes to our belief\u2014and I\u2014[emotion in voice] sorry, I just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You get emotional about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>[Emotion in voice] Yes. And I can still remember the board had unbelievable faith. They were talking to pastors, and guys from the missions, and this crazy guy, who had been a CEO of a large company. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember coming home that Thursday morning, after being with some of the men\u2014after we\u2019d had a lot of prayer\u2014and saying to my wife, \u201cI think this is God\u2019s call for us.\u201d\u00a0 So, we came. I just pray, Dennis, honestly, that I would have near the impact that it\u2019s had on me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And when you say that\u2014back to the question Bob asked Ricky\u2014unpack that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s given me a whole perspective of how much God really loves everybody. You know, the whole racial reconciliation question\u2014that\u2019s been dear to my heart since \u201993 and Promise Keepers\u2014God\u2019s given me an opportunity to do that in a different way than I would have ever expected. But I think to really be able to have friends that I would have never expected to be my friends who are some of the closest friends in my life. And to get up every day and really believe God\u2019s given us an opportunity and a privilege to show Him to people who I absolutely believe could change the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s dramatically made me better appreciate the poor. It\u2019s made me think about things, that I thought were important, that have no importance to me today\u2014and I know how important those were to me\u2014and so, to let those go\u2014I mean, this is a crazy story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, I think I was at the mission about 18 months\u2014and over my career, I loved to play golf. Every place I\u2019d go, I\u2019d buy a golf hat. Well, they are about $25 each; and I looked at my closet\u2014I had about 40. I thought: \u201cOh, my gosh! What kind of steward were you, Jim?\u201440 hats that you never wore.\u201d And I\u2019ve got guys that would die for one!\u00a0 You know, I had plenty of other things God could convict me on besides golf hats; but that happened to be the one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it just\u2014for me, it\u2019s been the incredible privilege to serve and watch God change two lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is in the multiplication business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s had an impact on your own marriage and family too; hasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>You know, my whole family, as I shared, was pretty dysfunctional. In fact, my youngest brother\u2014when both my parents died in \u201905, he just kind of really disappeared a lot\u2014went across the country. About three years ago, my middle brother had found him and said, if he\u2019d come to his house, he would give him a chance to restart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was going through Atlanta. Bob, my wife, paying close attention to details better than me\u2014said: \u201cHey, he\u2019s going to be in Atlanta for four hours on the bus. Why don\u2019t you\u2014maybe you can go see him.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went and had breakfast with him, and shared with him what I was doing, and drove by and asked him how he was doing\u2014because I really hardly knew him. And he shares that he has a drinking problem and binge drinks\u2014which, then, I know\u2014based upon all the people I serve\u2014he\u2019s got a serious drinking problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really asked him where his relationship with Christ was. He had said, \u201cWell, I accepted Him when I was young,\u201d which I knew was really probably not the answer. And I told him he had no hope without that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he left that, and got on the bus and left. That night, he called and said, \u201cJim, I think I need more help.\u201d\u00a0 And I had mentioned to him, when we were together\u2014totally in passing, not even more than a sentence\u2014that if he needed more help, we had a place called the Potter\u2019s House\u2014didn\u2019t think anything of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he calls me that night. He says, \u201cYou know, I think I need more help.\u201d\u00a0 And he says, \u201cI haven\u2019t been able to get the Potter\u2019s House out of my mind all day!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m immediately defensive, as a brother. I\u2019m saying: \u201cYou know, it\u2019s not going to be easy. Just because I\u2019m in charge, don\u2019t think that\u2014it\u2019s really going to be hard. You better go look at the website, and take the next 24 hours and pray, and call me back.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said to me, \u201cWhat if, Jim, God took you out of the business world because He knew I\u2019d need this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh. Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>And I was taken aback. Then, 24 hours later, I talked to him; and he came. He went through our program, and his life\u2019s been transformed. He\u2019d been at the Potter\u2019s House for probably ten days, and I got up and gave chapel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho\u2019s out in about row12 \/ halfway to the left, but my younger brother?\u2014 hearing me share the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn made a statement: \u201cThere are two kinds of problems\u2014those that are far away and those that are near.\u201d\u00a0 When we go near the poor, the orphan, the brokenhearted, we may think we\u2019re the one that is going to provide help; when, as we give our lives away, God comes and meets us in very specific ways and gives back to us in innumerable ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there is more to this story, Bob, that we\u2019ve got to tell; but I\u2019ll just give them a little bit of a hint\u2014God used Jim and Ricky to take 130 homeless men through <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking about the fact that God used our listeners, as well, in this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014a lot of them\u2014because some of our listeners, who support <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, had a hand in making the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series possible.
