We\u2019re going to hear on today\u2019s program about the things that make for a strong partnership in every marriage relationship. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition. I have to tell our listeners\u2014you were jazzed, back a few months ago, when you had the opportunity to spend a few days with some young men and women\u2014who are in the middle of preparing to be future pastors\u2014going to seminary at your <em>alma mater<\/em>, Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Future teachers\/professors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a chance to get with them and talk about how important their marriage relationship is in the middle of this preparation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. I started out by talking about a mistress. I guess what I would say to you, as a listener, is\u2014what would you think if I told you that your pastor, maybe your youth pastor, is tempted by a mistress? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, this is a mistress that tempts every person who breaks the spiritual bread and feeds the sheep. It\u2019s a very tempting and alluring mistress. It\u2019s a mistress called \u201cministry\u201d \u2014meeting people\u2019s needs. It can be so addictive that, frankly, it can cost a pastor his marriage, his family, and his ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought this was important for our listeners to hear, not only because we want them to have understanding and empathy for what their pastor may be experiencing, but the truth is\u2014any of us can be lured away by a temptation to place something of lesser importance in the middle of our lives and neglect our marriage; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re right, Bob. It can be children, it can be career, it can be a hobby, it can be materialism, it can be TV, it can be media, or it can be a computer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, our hearts, as it is said, are made to worship something. As one person said: \u201cWhen we don\u2019t worship God, we don\u2019t go on to worship nothing\u2014we go on to worship everything.\u201d We can, frankly, make an idol out of just about anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what I was talking to these young seminarians\u2014who, by the way, I think the seminary\u2014Dallas Seminary\u2014is represented by\u2014I think it\u2019s more than three dozen countries from around the world. These are young folks\u2014twenties, thirties, forties, and even some a bit older\u2014who have come to study the Scriptures and prepare to make a difference in other people\u2019s lives. What they don\u2019t realize is\u2014they\u2019re entering a very dangerous profession.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well and again, these lectures were provided to the student body over a four-day period. The seminary really felt it was important to take time-out and call these young men and women to make marriage a priority. They asked you to come and speak to the students. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a powerful four days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was called a Spiritual Life Week. I took it in the direction of the family because I know\u2014when you go to seminary\u2014that you can study a lot about God \/ you can study a lot about God\u2019s Word. You can be missing the main point of how you\u2019re doing in your most important relationships\u2014as a single person, as a married person, as a mom, as a dad\u2014because they were all in various roles, who were seated in the audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright. Well, let\u2019s listen to what you shared with the students on the first day of the Spiritual Life Week at Dallas Seminary, recently, as you talked to them about being aware of the possible mistress in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When I was a young lad\u2014starting out in ministry, here, in 1971\u2014a man by the name of Ron Dunn, a Baptist preacher, marked my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a very simple statement that has haunted me and yet compelled me to come back to the Word and to my Savior on numerous occasions. He said this: \u201cOn my way to the Savior, I met a mistress called service.\u201d The first principle I\u2019ve come to share with you is where we must start\u2014you <em>must <\/em>cultivate your first love for Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI suppose, if Bill Bright spoke on this 50 times, he spoke on it a hundred times. We used to say to Bill, \u201cDon\u2019t you know any other messages?\u201d But he would speak out of Revelation 2: \u201cI know your toil. I know your work, but I have this against you, you have left\u201d\u2014what?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cyour first love.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cyour first love.\u201d It is so easy, folks. I\u2019m telling you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it is so easy! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, I try to cultivate what the Scriptures command us to do, which is: \u201cDo the deeds you did at first,\u201d with some anchor points that I recall in those days\u2014when I first found the exciting adventure of joining Christ in life\u2014where I was aware of His presence. I was delighting in seeing Him work around me, work through me, work in other people. I would go to the Scripture and find Him there. I would apply the Scripture with a spongy and teachable heart. One of the things that concerns me most about my own heart is that I would lose my teachability \/ that I would not be able to admit I\u2019m wrong. It usually shows up in life\u2019s most intimate relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019ve not read Paul David Tripp\u2019s book <em>Dangerous Calling<\/em>, it should be required reading, here, at the seminary. Paul Tripp was an angry man, as he went into seminary, and even more angry, as he graduated. This comes from his book\u2014and I quote\u2014he said: \u201cI was in the middle of destroying my marriage and my ministry, and I didn\u2019t have a clue. I told my wife that 95 percent of the women in our church would love to be married to a man like me. [Sounds of surprise] To which his wife informed him she was in the 5 percent.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaul David Tripp has a chapter in his book, <em>Dangerous Calling<\/em>, that basically has this as its premise\u2014listen carefully: \u201cSeminary is a set-up for big theological brains and heart disease.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs it possible to come here for a year\/four years or more, and miss God? Of course, it is! \u201cGuard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: Make your spouse your life partner. First Peter 3:7 reminds husbands: \u201cLikewise husbands live with your lives in an understanding way, showing her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.\u201d So how do you make your spouse your partner? I asked Barbara about that\u2014we talked about partnerships. Partnerships usually have to do with ownership\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014sharing profits and losses. There are partners that are sought for their perspective, their input, and their wisdom. There are also silent partners. Marriage in ministry will never be between one who runs the show and the other who is a silent partner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo how do you do it? The word is share\u2014share. One of those words we supposedly learned when we were two: \u201cShare your toys. Share your things.\u201d Share with your spouse what God\u2019s doing in your life \/ share what\u2019s going on in your ministry. When she asks, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d the answer is not, \u201cFine,\u201d \/ \u201cGood.\u201d She doesn\u2019t want a two-minute news report, gentlemen. She wants a <em>Gone with the Wind<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she wants to know what happened! And if you want your wife to be your partner \/ or your husband to be your partner in ministry\u2014you have to share it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were raising our six kids, we\u2019d take walks around the garden. Sometimes, I was decompressing from a tough day; but I was very careful not to turn my wife into a toxic waste dump. There\u2019re a lot of bad things that happen in ministry that my wife doesn\u2019t need to know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShare more deeply on dates\u2014share some time together \/ get away on a regular basis. Sunday night was our date night. We\u2019d occasionally miss a night. The waitress would come up, after a couple weeks, and say, when we arrived back: \u201cAre you guys okay? Is your marriage okay? You haven\u2019t been here in a couple of weeks.\u201d [Laughter] Getaways\u2014get away together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSit and soak in the Scriptures and teach. Get alone. Share your love and appreciation for her. Make your marriage and your family a priority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Pray together, as a couple, every day. I was in my first four months of marriage\u2014I ran into a Presbyterian preacher\u2014hope it\u2019s okay to quote a Presbyterian, here, at Dallas\u2014name was Carl Wilson. I went up to Carl, who had been married 25 years and had five kids. I said, \u201cCarl, what\u2019s the single best piece of advice you can give me, as a young man, starting out my marriage?\u201d He said, \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy, Denny.\u201d He said, \u201cPray every day with Barbara.\u201d I said: \u201cThat\u2019s it?! That\u2019s the best advice?!\u201d He said: \u201cI suppose, in our 25 years, we haven\u2019t missed a handful of times. It has cemented our relationship around the Savior and connected us, spiritually, to Him and to each other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went home\u2014grabbed Barbara\u2019s hand, that night, as we got into bed\u2014and that\u2019s when we chose to do it. I prayed and began to pray every night until, one night, I went to bed\u2014I was facing that wall and she was facing that wall. It wasn\u2019t what was most comfortable, physically, but emotionally and spiritually. There was a tap on the shoulder\u2014my shoulder\u2014and it wasn\u2019t Barbara. It was God speaking to me through the Holy Spirit, telling me I\u2019d made a rookie mistake. He said, \u201cAren\u2019t you going to pray with her tonight?\u201d I said, \u201cUh-uh. I don\u2019t like her tonight, God.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you something\u2014there is something that takes place when two very strong-willed people bend their wills before Almighty God and invite His presence in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have gone to bed, burdened beyond description\u2014battling a child who wasn\u2019t doing well\u2014but when two people do that for 42 years\u2014you know!\u2014when God shows up, He changes things!\u2014maybe not instantly or as soon as I wish He would change me\u2014which reminds me of what\u2019s written on Ruth Bell Graham\u2019s tombstone: \u201cConstruction complete.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re all under construction. We need that reminder of: \u201cGod, You are God and I am not.\u201d To pray with your wife \/ to put your hands on her and pray <em>for her<\/em>\u2014to cast your burdens on Him\u2014it has changed the course of our marriage and family. I am convinced today that I would not be in ministry if we had not done that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are too many crafty ways of the enemy to get at us. Pray together every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four: Resolve conflict\u2014resolve conflict: \u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.\u201d You know the passage\u2014Ephesians 4:32. Forgiveness means we give up the right \/ we relinquish the right to punish the other person. It is very unnatural, from a human perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I have this thing\u2014where she knows and I know that, if one of us is repenting and coming forth, that it then moves it to the other person\u2019s camp: \u201cWill you forgive me?\u201d Sometimes, she has said to me: \u201cNo. I\u2019m not sure you\u2019re really repentant,\u201d which creates some interesting discussion, at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tResolve conflict. It\u2019s important for your marriage \/ it\u2019s important for your family. There\u2019s an African proverb that says, \u201cWhen the elephants fight, it\u2019s the grass that suffers.\u201d There\u2019s a lot at stake in your marriage. You\u2019re training your children, the next generation, how to resolve conflict. Why?\u2014because they\u2019re going to have a lot of it. The family is the training-ground for great theology and great practice of theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when\u2019s the last time you asked your spouse for forgiveness?\u2014\u201cI am sorry for when I\u2026\u201d \u201cWill you forgive me for\u2026\u201d and naming it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRomance can never grow in the toxic soil of a human heart filled with bitterness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was right after 9\/11\u2014I was in an arena filled with 14,000 people, at an event called <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, calling people to keep the most sacred pledge they ever make to another human being. My mind was wandering. My eyes drifted down to a vase, filled with two dozen roses. As I concluded my message, I reached down and got one of those roses out. I said: \u201cIf there\u2019s anybody here, who came to this event, and you need to take a rose back to your spouse to ask her \/ ask him to forgive you and make things right\u2014to ask God to help you be the man \/ to help you be the woman that you need to be\u2014then I want to invited you to come up here and get a rose.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked out of the corner of my eye. There was a guy, who was up on the top row. He was hitting about every third step, coming down. [Laughter] The entire audience was just quiet. We all watched, and I stopped. I didn\u2019t know what would happen. He walked out, and he started tugging at the rose, and got one. He sprinted back up faster than when he had come down. They met each other at\u2014seemed like in mid-air\u2014[Laughter] \u2014halfway down the row. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked down. There were people completely crowding around. Two dozen roses were gone in 30 seconds. So, the next event, we had 400 roses, and they lasted 90 seconds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next event, we had a thousand roses for 12,000 people. I made it clear\u2014this was not a chance to get a free rose [Laughter]\u2014they\u2019re expensive! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone has said, \u201cOne thought driven home is better than three left on base.\u201d I wonder if there\u2019s anybody, here, who needs to get real and say: \u201cYou know what? I don\u2019t care\u2014I\u2019m going to go back home, and I\u2019m going to ask for forgiveness. I\u2019m going to be God\u2019s man\/God\u2019s woman and make it right.\u201d These roses are going to be right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a first lecture given, recently, at Dallas Theological Seminary, as Dennis Rainey was speaking at Spiritual Life Week. Every listener wants to know what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know what? None of the roses got taken for about five minutes. And then, a really sharp man, in his forties, came up. He goes: \u201cThis has been tough. Seminary has been really tough\u2014five years.\u201d He said, \u201cI need a rose.\u201d I said, \u201cYou better go get one, now.\u201d And he did. You know\u2014you couldn\u2019t do something like that in a more threatening place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but by the time the week was over, nearly all of those roses were gone. People had come up, at various times, and had slipped a rose out and taken it back to their spouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I don\u2019t care where our listeners are, right now. There are a lot of flower shops where you live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPerhaps you need to stop, on your way home\u2014or run by the grocery store\u2014and pick out a rose. Take it back to your spouse, and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for\u2026\u201d and then name it. And then give them a chance to process and offer back forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is a sacred relationship between two people, who will hurt one another multiple times, over their lifetimes together. Forgiveness has to be practiced repeatedly. Oh, how I wish it weren\u2019t so! I wish I didn\u2019t have to do that\u2014and ask Barbara to forgive me\u2014but I do, regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m thinking about the scenes in <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series that talk about the need to seek forgiveness \/ the need to grant forgiveness to another person. This is a discipline in a marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a practice that is a part of marriage, all the way through. I have to tell our listeners\u2014you were jazzed, back a few months ago, when you had the opportunity to spend a few days with some young men and women\u2014who are in the middle of preparing to be future pastors\u2014going to seminary at your <em>alma mater<\/em>, Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Future teachers\/professors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a chance to get with them and talk about how important their marriage relationship is in the middle of this preparation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. I started out by talking about a mistress. I guess what I would say to you, as a listener, is\u2014what would you think if I told you that your pastor, maybe your youth pastor, is tempted by a mistress? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, this is a mistress that tempts every person who breaks the spiritual bread and feeds the sheep. It\u2019s a very tempting and alluring mistress. It\u2019s a mistress called \u201cministry\u201d \u2014meeting people\u2019s needs. It can be so addictive that, frankly, it can cost a pastor his marriage, his family, and his ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought this was important for our listeners to hear, not only because we want them to have understanding and empathy for what their pastor may be experiencing, but the truth is\u2014any of us can be lured away by a temptation to place something of lesser importance in the middle of our lives and neglect our marriage; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re right, Bob. It can be children, it can be career, it can be a hobby, it can be materialism, it can be TV, it can be media, or it can be a computer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, our hearts, as it is said, are made to worship something. As one person said: \u201cWhen we don\u2019t worship God, we don\u2019t go on to worship nothing\u2014we go on to worship everything.\u201d We can, frankly, make an idol out of just about anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what I was talking to these young seminarians\u2014who, by the way, I think the seminary\u2014Dallas Seminary\u2014is represented by\u2014I think it\u2019s more than three dozen countries from around the world. These are young folks\u2014twenties, thirties, forties, and even some a bit older\u2014who have come to study the Scriptures and prepare to make a difference in other people\u2019s lives. What they don\u2019t realize is\u2014they\u2019re entering a very dangerous profession.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well and again, these lectures were provided to the student body over a four-day period. The seminary really felt it was important to take time-out and call these young men and women to make marriage a priority. They asked you to come and speak to the students. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a powerful four days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was called a Spiritual Life Week. I took it in the direction of the family because I know\u2014when you go to seminary\u2014that you can study a lot about God \/ you can study a lot about God\u2019s Word. You can be missing the main point of how you\u2019re doing in your most important relationships\u2014as a single person, as a married person, as a mom, as a dad\u2014because they were all in various roles, who were seated in the audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright. Well, let\u2019s listen to what you shared with the students on the first day of the Spiritual Life Week at Dallas Seminary, recently, as you talked to them about being aware of the possible mistress in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When I was a young lad\u2014starting out in ministry, here, in 1971\u2014a man by the name of Ron Dunn, a Baptist preacher, marked my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a very simple statement that has haunted me and yet compelled me to come back to the Word and to my Savior on numerous occasions. He said this: \u201cOn my way to the Savior, I met a mistress called service.\u201d The first principle I\u2019ve come to share with you is where we must start\u2014you <em>must <\/em>cultivate your first love for Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI suppose, if Bill Bright spoke on this 50 times, he spoke on it a hundred times. We used to say to Bill, \u201cDon\u2019t you know any other messages?\u201d But he would speak out of Revelation 2: \u201cI know your toil. I know your work, but I have this against you, you have left\u201d\u2014what?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cyour first love.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cyour first love.\u201d It is so easy, folks. I\u2019m telling you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it is so easy! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, I try to cultivate what the Scriptures command us to do, which is: \u201cDo the deeds you did at first,\u201d with some anchor points that I recall in those days\u2014when I first found the exciting adventure of joining Christ in life\u2014where I was aware of His presence. I was delighting in seeing Him work around me, work through me, work in other people. I would go to the Scripture and find Him there. I would apply the Scripture with a spongy and teachable heart. One of the things that concerns me most about my own heart is that I would lose my teachability \/ that I would not be able to admit I\u2019m wrong. It usually shows up in life\u2019s most intimate relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019ve not read Paul David Tripp\u2019s book <em>Dangerous Calling<\/em>, it should be required reading, here, at the seminary. Paul Tripp was an angry man, as he went into seminary, and even more angry, as he graduated. This comes from his book\u2014and I quote\u2014he said: \u201cI was in the middle of destroying my marriage and my ministry, and I didn\u2019t have a clue. I told my wife that 95 percent of the women in our church would love to be married to a man like me. [Sounds of surprise] To which his wife informed him she was in the 5 percent.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaul David Tripp has a chapter in his book, <em>Dangerous Calling<\/em>, that basically has this as its premise\u2014listen carefully: \u201cSeminary is a set-up for big theological brains and heart disease.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs it possible to come here for a year\/four years or more, and miss God? Of course, it is! \u201cGuard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: Make your spouse your life partner. First Peter 3:7 reminds husbands: \u201cLikewise husbands live with your lives in an understanding way, showing her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.\u201d So how do you make your spouse your partner? I asked Barbara about that\u2014we talked about partnerships. Partnerships usually have to do with ownership\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014sharing profits and losses. There are partners that are sought for their perspective, their input, and their wisdom. There are also silent partners. Marriage in ministry will never be between one who runs the show and the other who is a silent partner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo how do you do it? The word is share\u2014share. One of those words we supposedly learned when we were two: \u201cShare your toys. Share your things.\u201d Share with your spouse what God\u2019s doing in your life \/ share what\u2019s going on in your ministry. When she asks, \u201cHow was your day?\u201d the answer is not, \u201cFine,\u201d \/ \u201cGood.\u201d She doesn\u2019t want a two-minute news report, gentlemen. She wants a <em>Gone with the Wind<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she wants to know what happened! And if you want your wife to be your partner \/ or your husband to be your partner in ministry\u2014you have to share it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were raising our six kids, we\u2019d take walks around the garden. Sometimes, I was decompressing from a tough day; but I was very careful not to turn my wife into a toxic waste dump. There\u2019re a lot of bad things that happen in ministry that my wife doesn\u2019t need to know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShare more deeply on dates\u2014share some time together \/ get away on a regular basis. Sunday night was our date night. We\u2019d occasionally miss a night. The waitress would come up, after a couple weeks, and say, when we arrived back: \u201cAre you guys okay? Is your marriage okay? You haven\u2019t been here in a couple of weeks.\u201d [Laughter] Getaways\u2014get away together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSit and soak in the Scriptures and teach. Get alone. Share your love and appreciation for her. Make your marriage and your family a priority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird: Pray together, as a couple, every day. I was in my first four months of marriage\u2014I ran into a Presbyterian preacher\u2014hope it\u2019s okay to quote a Presbyterian, here, at Dallas\u2014name was Carl Wilson. I went up to Carl, who had been married 25 years and had five kids. I said, \u201cCarl, what\u2019s the single best piece of advice you can give me, as a young man, starting out my marriage?\u201d He said, \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy, Denny.\u201d He said, \u201cPray every day with Barbara.\u201d I said: \u201cThat\u2019s it?! That\u2019s the best advice?!\u201d He said: \u201cI suppose, in our 25 years, we haven\u2019t missed a handful of times. It has cemented our relationship around the Savior and connected us, spiritually, to Him and to each other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went home\u2014grabbed Barbara\u2019s hand, that night, as we got into bed\u2014and that\u2019s when we chose to do it. I prayed and began to pray every night until, one night, I went to bed\u2014I was facing that wall and she was facing that wall. It wasn\u2019t what was most comfortable, physically, but emotionally and spiritually. There was a tap on the shoulder\u2014my shoulder\u2014and it wasn\u2019t Barbara. It was God speaking to me through the Holy Spirit, telling me I\u2019d made a rookie mistake. He said, \u201cAren\u2019t you going to pray with her tonight?\u201d I said, \u201cUh-uh. I don\u2019t like her tonight, God.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you something\u2014there is something that takes place when two very strong-willed people bend their wills before Almighty God and invite His presence in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have gone to bed, burdened beyond description\u2014battling a child who wasn\u2019t doing well\u2014but when two people do that for 42 years\u2014you know!\u2014when God shows up, He changes things!\u2014maybe not instantly or as soon as I wish He would change me\u2014which reminds me of what\u2019s written on Ruth Bell Graham\u2019s tombstone: \u201cConstruction complete.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re all under construction. We need that reminder of: \u201cGod, You are God and I am not.\u201d To pray with your wife \/ to put your hands on her and pray <em>for her<\/em>\u2014to cast your burdens on Him\u2014it has changed the course of our marriage and family. I am convinced today that I would not be in ministry if we had not done that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are too many crafty ways of the enemy to get at us. Pray together every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four: Resolve conflict\u2014resolve conflict: \u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.\u201d You know the passage\u2014Ephesians 4:32. Forgiveness means we give up the right \/ we relinquish the right to punish the other person. It is very unnatural, from a human perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I have this thing\u2014where she knows and I know that, if one of us is repenting and coming forth, that it then moves it to the other person\u2019s camp: \u201cWill you forgive me?\u201d Sometimes, she has said to me: \u201cNo. I\u2019m not sure you\u2019re really repentant,\u201d which creates some interesting discussion, at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tResolve conflict. It\u2019s important for your marriage \/ it\u2019s important for your family. There\u2019s an African proverb that says, \u201cWhen the elephants fight, it\u2019s the grass that suffers.\u201d There\u2019s a lot at stake in your marriage. You\u2019re training your children, the next generation, how to resolve conflict. Why?\u2014because they\u2019re going to have a lot of it. The family is the training-ground for great theology and great practice of theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when\u2019s the last time you asked your spouse for forgiveness?\u2014\u201cI am sorry for when I\u2026\u201d \u201cWill you forgive me for\u2026\u201d and naming it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRomance can never grow in the toxic soil of a human heart filled with bitterness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was right after 9\/11\u2014I was in an arena filled with 14,000 people, at an event called <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, calling people to keep the most sacred pledge they ever make to another human being. My mind was wandering. My eyes drifted down to a vase, filled with two dozen roses. As I concluded my message, I reached down and got one of those roses out. I said: \u201cIf there\u2019s anybody here, who came to this event, and you need to take a rose back to your spouse to ask her \/ ask him to forgive you and make things right\u2014to ask God to help you be the man \/ to help you be the woman that you need to be\u2014then I want to invited you to come up here and get a rose.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked out of the corner of my eye. There was a guy, who was up on the top row. He was hitting about every third step, coming down. [Laughter] The entire audience was just quiet. We all watched, and I stopped. I didn\u2019t know what would happen. He walked out, and he started tugging at the rose, and got one. He sprinted back up faster than when he had come down. They met each other at\u2014seemed like in mid-air\u2014[Laughter] \u2014halfway down the row. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked down. There were people completely crowding around. Two dozen roses were gone in 30 seconds. So, the next event, we had 400 roses, and they lasted 90 seconds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next event, we had a thousand roses for 12,000 people. I made it clear\u2014this was not a chance to get a free rose [Laughter]\u2014they\u2019re expensive! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone has said, \u201cOne thought driven home is better than three left on base.\u201d I wonder if there\u2019s anybody, here, who needs to get real and say: \u201cYou know what? I don\u2019t care\u2014I\u2019m going to go back home, and I\u2019m going to ask for forgiveness. I\u2019m going to be God\u2019s man\/God\u2019s woman and make it right.\u201d These roses are going to be right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a first lecture given, recently, at Dallas Theological Seminary, as Dennis Rainey was speaking at Spiritual Life Week. Every listener wants to know what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know what? None of the roses got taken for about five minutes. And then, a really sharp man, in his forties, came up. He goes: \u201cThis has been tough. Seminary has been really tough\u2014five years.\u201d He said, \u201cI need a rose.\u201d I said, \u201cYou better go get one, now.\u201d And he did. You know\u2014you couldn\u2019t do something like that in a more threatening place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but by the time the week was over, nearly all of those roses were gone. People had come up, at various times, and had slipped a rose out and taken it back to their spouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I don\u2019t care where our listeners are, right now. There are a lot of flower shops where you live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPerhaps you need to stop, on your way home\u2014or run by the grocery store\u2014and pick out a rose. Take it back to your spouse, and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for\u2026\u201d and then name it. And then give them a chance to process and offer back forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is a sacred relationship between two people, who will hurt one another multiple times, over their lifetimes together. Forgiveness has to be practiced repeatedly. Oh, how I wish it weren\u2019t so! I wish I didn\u2019t have to do that\u2014and ask Barbara to forgive me\u2014but I do, regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m thinking about the scenes in <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series that talk about the need to seek forgiveness \/ the need to grant forgiveness to another person. This is a discipline in a marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a practice that is a part of marriage, all the way through. That\u2019s why it\u2019s good for couples, whether they\u2019re in the first year of marriage, or they\u2019re in the 31<sup>st<\/sup> or 41<sup>st<\/sup> year of marriage, to get some regular marriage maintenance\u2014to read a book together or to go through a series, like <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> video series. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, let me just remind our listeners that we\u2019re down to the last couple of days on the special offer that we are making.
