Did you read the acronym that Joanne Kraft included in her book\u2014the acronym for \u201cBUSY\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did; I did. I think it would be good if she shared it with moms, right off the bat. Joanne\u2014welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s a busy mom of four kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had better not call her busy, given what that acronym\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, she is still busy. I mean, I don\u2019t think just because she called a sabbatical for a year and did nothing with her kids except build into their lives and also write a book called <em>Just Too Busy<\/em>: <em>Taking Your Family on a Radical Sabbatical<\/em>. Now, explain what BUSY\u2014\u201cB\u201d \u201cU\u201d \u201cS\u201d \u201cY\u201d\u2014 stands for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Burdened Under Satan\u2019s Yoke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Say it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Burdened Under Satan\u2019s Yoke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now that sounds a little harsh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It\u2019s pretty harsh; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Wow!\u00a0 My girlfriend showed that to me; and I thought: \u201cWow! Thanks a lot. I don\u2019t want to take your call next time.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you felt a little bit of that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Most definitely. It\u2019s from the Scriptures. God says that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. When we\u2019re in a family situation, as it is, it\u2019s busy. But when it starts to feel like you\u2019re in captivity to it\u2014when you\u2019re in the captivity of activity\u2014then there is bondage and something is wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You already shared with our listeners about the year-long radical sabbatical that you took, where anything that involved an extra trip for Mom was off limits for the kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious: \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d I mean, as soon as you pared away all of the stuff that you were used to doing, I see the family sitting around watching a lot of TV or saying, \u201cI\u2019m bored.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, if the children say they\u2019re bored, my husband tells them they\u2019re bored because they\u2019re boring and he hands them a broom. [Laughter] So, they didn\u2019t say that too much\u2014I\u2019m joking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe kids\u2014what surprised me the most and what was most surprising about how this book came about was\u2014though the \u201cradical sabbatical\u201d gets top billing as the topic, it\u2019s really only a few chapters in my book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened was that, once you took away the busyness, you got to get to the deep part of the family. You got to get to those places that I was able to\u2014really\u2014I just think it was a refocus. It was taking my face and focusing it back on the most precious people in my life. At the time, our kids were, I believe, between the ages of kindergarten and sophomore in high school. That brevity of time with our children was drawing to a finish line, especially with our oldest. We thought, \u201cThis is our only time that we have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband and I shared with the kids: \u201cWe want to make this time matter. We want to be as strong together now as we\u2019re going to be later. We want to focus on us, as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what did that look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> What happened was that the kids had school and they would come home. We actually talked \/ we actually did homework at a normal time. I wasn\u2019t doing homework after a practice or rushing around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe actually had communication\u2014there was relationship going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Family meals showed up again?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Family meals\u2014\u201cAmen and hallelujah!\u201d my kids would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what did you do at the family dinner table? Because, seriously, I think some moms have so lost the wonder of a meal together because of activity. They don\u2019t know what they would do with the time if they had it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, you know, it\u2019s interesting about meals as well\u2014is that, not only are people having a hard time sitting around a kitchen table\u2014and every family is going to struggle with it\u2014we still have to commit to doing that. What\u2019s interesting now is\u2014people have meals, sometimes, around the TV. So, not only are you having meals, but you\u2019re being distracted by this white noise; and you\u2019re not able to focus on your kids or your husband.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we did is\u2014we talked, as a family. We talked about the day. It\u2019s really amazing how God created us actually to have relationship; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> And how He created it to happen organically. We actually would start talking about something; and we would bring up an old memory, or we would talk about relatives, or family, or what\u2019s coming up. It was life, as it should be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was there a withdrawal period? I mean, I\u2019m wondering if: \u201cWeek one of the radical sabbatical\u2014was everybody having to detox from what they\u2019d been doing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, one of the things we did with our radical sabbatical\u2014and, actually, our pastor coined that term, which is funny because I told him, \u201cWe\u2019re just taking a break,\u201d\u2014\u00a0 is what I said; and he said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re taking a radical sabbatical.\u201d The word radical means \u201cextreme\u201d but it also means \u201crevolutionary.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Okay. What made it a little bit easier, and helped the detox time, is\u2014we told the kids, when we sat down with them on that day: \u201cWhat we\u2019re going to do is\u2014every month, we\u2019re going to set aside one day on the weekend; and we\u2019re going to plan a trip. I didn\u2019t like being the field trip mom\u2014sorry if that\u2019s blasphemy\u2014I did it. I love my children greatly; but, to me, it was like [Sounding wearisome]: \u201cOh, a field trip?! I have to go on a field trip?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But did that change in the midst of your sabbatical?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, what was interesting was\u2014with the kids\u2014each month, when we chose a family field trip, I actually enjoyed getting together and doing those things, as a family. I always loved it with my family\u2014I just didn\u2019t want to go take care of somebody else\u2019s children on a field trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, when you talk about a field trip\u2014if one of the kids said, \u201cI want to go to Maui!\u201d That wasn\u2019t on the\u2014did somebody say that? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re giving them ideas now because they\u2019re listening to you. Thanks a lot, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I see Grace in there\u2014she\u2019s pounding the table for Maui. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> That\u2019s usually Samuel\u2019s choice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, but was this a tour of the local dairy or what did you do for your field trips?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne: <\/strong>Okay. What happened was\u2014this was where I realized how ingrained our busy\u2014this universal epidemic of busyness is, even when we chose to do something together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you what we did. We let Grace\u2014since January was her birthday month\u2014let her choose the field trip for January. January\u2019s field trip was\u2014we went on a picnic, we went ice skating, we went to a matinee, we went to the boutique. It was ridiculous!\u2014we were running!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Cram as much into the day as you can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> That mom-guilt again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It was incredible! It took us a while to detox from even our good stuff was over-the-top and ridiculous!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Still cramming too much in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Cramming too much in, but you know what the real breakthrough moment was for me? It was in the spring when it was my turn to choose the family field trip. I went to write down on the calendar, \u201cDaffodil Hill.\u201d\u00a0 Now, anybody, from the Northern California area, will recognize Daffodil Hill as a farm where 300,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs explode for their two weeks of glory\u2014that\u2019s really it! When my kids saw me write, \u201cDaffodil Hill,\u201d it was not their top destination choice for the trip of the month. They started to say, \u201cOh, no!\u2014not Daffodil Hill!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I had a flashback\u2014I remembered, as a child, vacations weren\u2019t common in our home\u2014we didn\u2019t have a lot of money. I was the oldest of four. So, when rumor had it that a vacation was going to happen, I decided to help my parents out and tell my younger siblings we were going to Disneyland. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe didn\u2019t go to Disneyland. [Laughter] When our nine-passenger, wood-paneled station wagon arrived in front of a lumber mill for a tour and in front of a fish hatchery, I thought I would die\u2014I did. Years later, our family splurged and took us to Disneyland. You know, as adults, we siblings laugh\u2014we don\u2019t remember anything about Disneyland\u2014we remember the fish hatchery. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We remember the lumber mill. So, I kept Daffodil Hill down\u2014I did that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s your favorite memory from Daffodil Hill\u2014if you could just give a snapshot of one scene from that time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It would be putting my children\u2014having them all sit amongst the daffodils and the horrible looks on their faces, like they were eating worms, as I took a picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes! I figured it had to do with taking a picture [Laughter] because we did the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to go back to kind of the start of the year and just ask you a question about you and Paul:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDid you guys have a planning session for your year, where you kind of sat down and said, \u2018What would we like to really accomplish out of this, in terms of experiences \/ way to go about this?\u2019\u201d Were you intentional from the very start, or did that intentionality happen more over the months as it unfolded?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I believe that, in the beginning, it was more of a sporadic: \u201cLet\u2019s just do this. We need something different.\u201d Then, I think, it happened gradually, as we started to see and unfold the areas that were changing\u2014like our kids. My teen-aged daughter, Meghan\u2014you can imagine, as a sophomore in high school\u2014your children really don\u2019t want to hang out with you too much!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I mean, they\u2019ll climb over your dead body to get to their girlfriends. They don\u2019t want to be with you that much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> What I realized, by the end of the year, when it was Meghan\u2019s choice for a field trip, I asked her. I was all ready to say, \u201cNo,\u201d thinking she\u2019s going to want to go to Maui\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014or she\u2019s going to want\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she said, \u201cMom, how about if we just hang out all day today on my day and stay in our pajamas all day and watch movies?\u201d That\u2019s <em>huge<\/em> for a parent of a teenager!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> There wasn\u2019t any pushback by that time\u2014she wanted to hang out with us. That was huge for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dennis already asked you to kind of bottom-line what the benefit of this year was\u2014you said it was in relationships\u2014but, along the way, there were some surprising, unexpected God-moments. Something happened with your son, David\u2014that was unexpected; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Right\u2014with David. We have some friends from Australia, and they came for a visit. They asked us if David could be the jackaroo on their sheep ranch\u2014their 3,000-acre property in Australia. I mean, they\u2019re Australian\u2014it\u2019s \u201cjackaroo\u201d and \u201cmate.\u201d They\u2019re the most precious people you ever want to meet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid was so excited. He said, \u201cOh, Mom and Dad, can I go to Australia?\u201d My husband said, \u201cWell, how much does it cost?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid said: \u201cWell, it is $1,000 for my ticket. It\u2019s $200 for my passport. Dad, can you pay for that?\u201d My husband looked at him and he said: \u201cYou know what, son? I can pay for that, but I\u2019m not going to pay for that. That\u2019s between you and the Lord.\u201d David said: \u201cBut Dad, I\u2019m only 15! How am I going to earn money to go?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking, as a mom, because fear robs our kids so often\u2014as a parent, I\u2019m thinking: \u201cHa ha! You\u2019re not going,\u201d because I don\u2019t want my son to travel across the world without me. My son, that summer, decided to start refereeing soccer games\u2014this was the year after our sabbatical. He earned enough money to buy his passport. He bought a pig for the FFA program at his high school. He\u2014I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever been to a pig auction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not recently. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> They are pretty fun. I had no idea they were so exciting. My son had to earn enough on his pig\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well now, wait\u2014why are they exciting? I\u2019ve got to ask that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness. They\u2019re exciting because you\u2019re auctioning them off\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you\u2019re auctioning\u2014basically, the county comes together. It\u2019s a way for the county to support the kids and the programs. It\u2019s so exciting! Have you ever seen a rabbit sell for $800?\u2014that\u2019s exciting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I would think it would be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To the owner of the rabbit, particularly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> The kids are happy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Anyway, my son had to earn so much money. We knew how much he had to make in order to buy his ticket. He had named his pig Australia. When we get there, there were 13 of our family waiting in the seats there. I\u2019m waving at my friends\u2014my husband was having a heart attack because he was thinking I was waving and the auctioneer is going to count it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To take your bid. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014and we\u2019re going to buy a $5,000 sheep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son gets up there. He got third-place pig in the whole fair, which was so awesome for his first time. He needed\u2014I think the first-place pig made $350\u2014David needed to make at least that. We thought, \u201cWell, there\u2019s no way our son\u2019s going to make $350 because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s third place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sure, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014\u201che\u2019s third place.\u201d How sad! Poor guy isn\u2019t going to Australia. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey did it\u2014they auctioned it off\u2014$400\u2014the gavel came crashing down. Our son flew to Australia. His plane landed in Brisbane, Australia, where he got to be a jackaroo. I tell this story, when I share with parents at conferences or at women\u2019s conferences, about entitlement and how we are robbing from our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We\u2019re stealing opportunities. We\u2019re really strangling the Holy Spirit because how do we expect to raise independent, God-honoring, hard-working children if we don\u2019t allow them those opportunities? We can\u2019t expect our kids to want to lean on God if they\u2019re not doing it now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s some serious bacon\u2014that\u2019s all I can say. [Laughter] That must have been some really good bacon!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We steal from our kids. I\u2019ll tell you what was kind of interesting\u2014we get to the San Francisco airport. My son was getting ready to get on the plane. Every single person there, I believed, was a terrorist\u2014you couldn\u2019t tell me differently. [Laughter] The cute little Swedish grandmother, with a bun\u2014she had a shoe bomb\u2014I knew it! My husband took my son aside. He touched his eyes, and he touched his mouth, and he touched his heart\u2014he said, \u201cKeep them holy, son.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s cool. That\u2019s cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You invited your oldest two kids\u2014your son and your daughter\u2014to add a chapter to this book and they didn\u2019t. They fell through on the deal; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> You share everything I\u2019m telling you; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But your daughter, Meghan, wrote you a letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes, she did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Read for our listeners what Meghan had to say about the radical sabbatical and her reflection on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes. I did ask both of my children because I wanted to give parents a true glimpse into our life: \u201cHow many kids really were interested in doing this?\u201d It wasn\u2019t perfect\u2014my son didn\u2019t enjoy it. He wasn\u2019t happy he was taken off of the pitching mound. I didn\u2019t want to edit it, but parts of it I did because she shares the truth to me in this letter. She says:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDear Mom, it\u2019s early in the morning as I reach back into my own memory, bringing forth our radical sabbatical into lessons I learned so long ago. It was New Year\u2019s Eve and I was ecstatic to be with family friends rather than staying home, which promised a much earlier bedtime. While I was engaging myself with friends, you began to concoct an idea that was to begin in a mere couple of hours. I was oblivious to your thoughts as you received support from Dad, felt questioning from yourself, and set your mind to twist our lives around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut truthfully, Mom, if I knew your radical plan, I probably wouldn\u2019t have thought much about it because early on New Year\u2019s Day, when you and Dad called a family meeting, after our devotion, I thought this was another of your little phases\u2014like the lemonade stand you painted and we used once, or the move we were going to make to Texas, or the family trip we were supposed to take to Washington, DC, that never materialized. I wasn\u2019t worried. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, this was a phase. You would break down in the spring, when we signed up for soccer. There was no way you were going to cut my weekly singing lessons\u2014you were Mom\u2014the nice one!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went to you with cut knees and broken little hearts. You made yummy dinners and talked to Dad in the late hours of the night if he was too hard on us. Yet, somehow, your creative mind, usually used for good, warped with exhaustion and spun out your radical sabbatical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou didn\u2019t change your mind. We learned that extremely fast; and our activities, as a family, changed quickly. Our ice skating escapade was an exhausting, expensive wreck. We suffered through Daffodil Hill. However, we also turned our fingers all colors of purple and blue as we picked berries. We had movie nights, filled with laughter, and long car rides discovering the town we grew up in. I found out that Dad was pretty funny and I wouldn\u2019t die if my hand brushed my brother David\u2019s in the car. I learned sharing drinks with my siblings wasn\u2019t poisonous and school friends weren\u2019t always the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI find it funny that my hardest year in high school was the year of the radical sabbatical. I cried for the first time at school after the experience of a fire-spitting bully. I found myself with an overwhelming crush on a boy who simply liked the idea of being liked, and I lost my best girlfriend to a young man she found more important than me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>17:00<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that during our sabbatical year, you held me more than you had in quite a while, allowing your arms to run with hot tears and shirts to soak with salty heartbreak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that I think about it, our year-long sabbatical experiment not only taught me about being too busy, but about my mom. I was no longer too busy\u2014but now I had time to see who you really were. As a parent, you have had an immeasurable impact on me. Not only do I look like you and make your facial expressions, but I dream like you and think like you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour lessons spanning from simple childhood \u201cDo this,\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t do that,\u201d of stealing and sharing, or how to treat others who are different than me with the love of God and form honoring relationships have stuck with me. Each tidbit of advice from sidelong whispers to messages on Facebook has glued themselves to my psyche. Your words have never died in my heart. If I disagree or disobey, they are still there, sticking like sharp pangs and hot needles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Mom, your words get to affect others. The advice I get for free is going to have a price tag on it and sit on a shelf. I am so proud of you and that I get to call you \u201cMom.\u201d\u00a0 Your life has taught me so much and helped create the person I am now. I might struggle and give in to the urges of the young, but you\u2019re always somewhere in my mind. You\u2019ve done well, if I do say so myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur sabbatical taught me I can enjoy my life rather than allow busyness to drive it away. Thank you for giving me this lesson so young. I will, one day, be able to love my husband and spend time with my children and be able to guard myself from being painfully selfish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you knew the way I felt about you then and the way I feel about you now, I am sure you would be encouraged. I remember telling people that, if I had only one child, I wanted a girl. You know why? Because I wanted to be a mom\u2014a confidante\u2014to someone in the same way you were to me. One of my biggest dreams is to be like you. I really hope I encourage parents to hold onto the reins\u2014that if they know they\u2019re doing the God-honoring thing\u2014turning their focus on their family, and on their children, and their time to their husbands and their kids\u2014God honors that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He does. As you were talking there, I couldn\u2019t help but think\u2014and we don\u2019t think of this passage being for a mother\/daughter. It was actually the Apostle Paul writing a letter to his spiritual son, Timothy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cFor I am already being poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a father\u2019s heart \/ it could be a mom\u2019s heart too\u2014of running the race well and passing the baton to the next generation. It really sounds like Meghan got it. You did do a good job, Joanne. Did you read the acronym that Joanne Kraft included in her book\u2014the acronym for \u201cBUSY\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did; I did. I think it would be good if she shared it with moms, right off the bat. Joanne\u2014welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Thank you so much for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s a busy mom of four kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had better not call her busy, given what that acronym\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, she is still busy. I mean, I don\u2019t think just because she called a sabbatical for a year and did nothing with her kids except build into their lives and also write a book called <em>Just Too Busy<\/em>: <em>Taking Your Family on a Radical Sabbatical<\/em>. Now, explain what BUSY\u2014\u201cB\u201d \u201cU\u201d \u201cS\u201d \u201cY\u201d\u2014 stands for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Burdened Under Satan\u2019s Yoke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Say it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Burdened Under Satan\u2019s Yoke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now that sounds a little harsh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It\u2019s pretty harsh; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Wow!\u00a0 My girlfriend showed that to me; and I thought: \u201cWow! Thanks a lot. I don\u2019t want to take your call next time.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you felt a little bit of that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Most definitely. It\u2019s from the Scriptures. God says that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. When we\u2019re in a family situation, as it is, it\u2019s busy. But when it starts to feel like you\u2019re in captivity to it\u2014when you\u2019re in the captivity of activity\u2014then there is bondage and something is wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You already shared with our listeners about the year-long radical sabbatical that you took, where anything that involved an extra trip for Mom was off limits for the kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious: \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d I mean, as soon as you pared away all of the stuff that you were used to doing, I see the family sitting around watching a lot of TV or saying, \u201cI\u2019m bored.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, if the children say they\u2019re bored, my husband tells them they\u2019re bored because they\u2019re boring and he hands them a broom. [Laughter] So, they didn\u2019t say that too much\u2014I\u2019m joking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe kids\u2014what surprised me the most and what was most surprising about how this book came about was\u2014though the \u201cradical sabbatical\u201d gets top billing as the topic, it\u2019s really only a few chapters in my book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened was that, once you took away the busyness, you got to get to the deep part of the family. You got to get to those places that I was able to\u2014really\u2014I just think it was a refocus. It was taking my face and focusing it back on the most precious people in my life. At the time, our kids were, I believe, between the ages of kindergarten and sophomore in high school. That brevity of time with our children was drawing to a finish line, especially with our oldest. We thought, \u201cThis is our only time that we have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband and I shared with the kids: \u201cWe want to make this time matter. We want to be as strong together now as we\u2019re going to be later. We want to focus on us, as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what did that look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> What happened was that the kids had school and they would come home. We actually talked \/ we actually did homework at a normal time. I wasn\u2019t doing homework after a practice or rushing around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe actually had communication\u2014there was relationship going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Family meals showed up again?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Family meals\u2014\u201cAmen and hallelujah!\u201d my kids would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what did you do at the family dinner table? Because, seriously, I think some moms have so lost the wonder of a meal together because of activity. They don\u2019t know what they would do with the time if they had it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, you know, it\u2019s interesting about meals as well\u2014is that, not only are people having a hard time sitting around a kitchen table\u2014and every family is going to struggle with it\u2014we still have to commit to doing that. What\u2019s interesting now is\u2014people have meals, sometimes, around the TV. So, not only are you having meals, but you\u2019re being distracted by this white noise; and you\u2019re not able to focus on your kids or your husband.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we did is\u2014we talked, as a family. We talked about the day. It\u2019s really amazing how God created us actually to have relationship; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> And how He created it to happen organically. We actually would start talking about something; and we would bring up an old memory, or we would talk about relatives, or family, or what\u2019s coming up. It was life, as it should be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was there a withdrawal period? I mean, I\u2019m wondering if: \u201cWeek one of the radical sabbatical\u2014was everybody having to detox from what they\u2019d been doing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, one of the things we did with our radical sabbatical\u2014and, actually, our pastor coined that term, which is funny because I told him, \u201cWe\u2019re just taking a break,\u201d\u2014\u00a0 is what I said; and he said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re taking a radical sabbatical.\u201d The word radical means \u201cextreme\u201d but it also means \u201crevolutionary.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Okay. What made it a little bit easier, and helped the detox time, is\u2014we told the kids, when we sat down with them on that day: \u201cWhat we\u2019re going to do is\u2014every month, we\u2019re going to set aside one day on the weekend; and we\u2019re going to plan a trip. I didn\u2019t like being the field trip mom\u2014sorry if that\u2019s blasphemy\u2014I did it. I love my children greatly; but, to me, it was like [Sounding wearisome]: \u201cOh, a field trip?! I have to go on a field trip?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But did that change in the midst of your sabbatical?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Well, what was interesting was\u2014with the kids\u2014each month, when we chose a family field trip, I actually enjoyed getting together and doing those things, as a family. I always loved it with my family\u2014I just didn\u2019t want to go take care of somebody else\u2019s children on a field trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, when you talk about a field trip\u2014if one of the kids said, \u201cI want to go to Maui!\u201d That wasn\u2019t on the\u2014did somebody say that? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re giving them ideas now because they\u2019re listening to you. Thanks a lot, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I see Grace in there\u2014she\u2019s pounding the table for Maui. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> That\u2019s usually Samuel\u2019s choice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, but was this a tour of the local dairy or what did you do for your field trips?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne: <\/strong>Okay. What happened was\u2014this was where I realized how ingrained our busy\u2014this universal epidemic of busyness is, even when we chose to do something together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you what we did. We let Grace\u2014since January was her birthday month\u2014let her choose the field trip for January. January\u2019s field trip was\u2014we went on a picnic, we went ice skating, we went to a matinee, we went to the boutique. It was ridiculous!\u2014we were running!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Cram as much into the day as you can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> That mom-guilt again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It was incredible! It took us a while to detox from even our good stuff was over-the-top and ridiculous!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Still cramming too much in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Cramming too much in, but you know what the real breakthrough moment was for me? It was in the spring when it was my turn to choose the family field trip. I went to write down on the calendar, \u201cDaffodil Hill.\u201d\u00a0 Now, anybody, from the Northern California area, will recognize Daffodil Hill as a farm where 300,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs explode for their two weeks of glory\u2014that\u2019s really it! When my kids saw me write, \u201cDaffodil Hill,\u201d it was not their top destination choice for the trip of the month. They started to say, \u201cOh, no!\u2014not Daffodil Hill!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I had a flashback\u2014I remembered, as a child, vacations weren\u2019t common in our home\u2014we didn\u2019t have a lot of money. I was the oldest of four. So, when rumor had it that a vacation was going to happen, I decided to help my parents out and tell my younger siblings we were going to Disneyland. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe didn\u2019t go to Disneyland. [Laughter] When our nine-passenger, wood-paneled station wagon arrived in front of a lumber mill for a tour and in front of a fish hatchery, I thought I would die\u2014I did. Years later, our family splurged and took us to Disneyland. You know, as adults, we siblings laugh\u2014we don\u2019t remember anything about Disneyland\u2014we remember the fish hatchery. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We remember the lumber mill. So, I kept Daffodil Hill down\u2014I did that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s your favorite memory from Daffodil Hill\u2014if you could just give a snapshot of one scene from that time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> It would be putting my children\u2014having them all sit amongst the daffodils and the horrible looks on their faces, like they were eating worms, as I took a picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes! I figured it had to do with taking a picture [Laughter] because we did the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to go back to kind of the start of the year and just ask you a question about you and Paul:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDid you guys have a planning session for your year, where you kind of sat down and said, \u2018What would we like to really accomplish out of this, in terms of experiences \/ way to go about this?\u2019\u201d Were you intentional from the very start, or did that intentionality happen more over the months as it unfolded?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I believe that, in the beginning, it was more of a sporadic: \u201cLet\u2019s just do this. We need something different.\u201d Then, I think, it happened gradually, as we started to see and unfold the areas that were changing\u2014like our kids. My teen-aged daughter, Meghan\u2014you can imagine, as a sophomore in high school\u2014your children really don\u2019t want to hang out with you too much!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> I mean, they\u2019ll climb over your dead body to get to their girlfriends. They don\u2019t want to be with you that much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> What I realized, by the end of the year, when it was Meghan\u2019s choice for a field trip, I asked her. I was all ready to say, \u201cNo,\u201d thinking she\u2019s going to want to go to Maui\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014or she\u2019s going to want\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she said, \u201cMom, how about if we just hang out all day today on my day and stay in our pajamas all day and watch movies?\u201d That\u2019s <em>huge<\/em> for a parent of a teenager!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> There wasn\u2019t any pushback by that time\u2014she wanted to hang out with us. That was huge for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dennis already asked you to kind of bottom-line what the benefit of this year was\u2014you said it was in relationships\u2014but, along the way, there were some surprising, unexpected God-moments. Something happened with your son, David\u2014that was unexpected; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Right\u2014with David. We have some friends from Australia, and they came for a visit. They asked us if David could be the jackaroo on their sheep ranch\u2014their 3,000-acre property in Australia. I mean, they\u2019re Australian\u2014it\u2019s \u201cjackaroo\u201d and \u201cmate.\u201d They\u2019re the most precious people you ever want to meet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid was so excited. He said, \u201cOh, Mom and Dad, can I go to Australia?\u201d My husband said, \u201cWell, how much does it cost?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid said: \u201cWell, it is $1,000 for my ticket. It\u2019s $200 for my passport. Dad, can you pay for that?\u201d My husband looked at him and he said: \u201cYou know what, son? I can pay for that, but I\u2019m not going to pay for that. That\u2019s between you and the Lord.\u201d David said: \u201cBut Dad, I\u2019m only 15! How am I going to earn money to go?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking, as a mom, because fear robs our kids so often\u2014as a parent, I\u2019m thinking: \u201cHa ha! You\u2019re not going,\u201d because I don\u2019t want my son to travel across the world without me. My son, that summer, decided to start refereeing soccer games\u2014this was the year after our sabbatical. He earned enough money to buy his passport. He bought a pig for the FFA program at his high school. He\u2014I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever been to a pig auction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not recently. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> They are pretty fun. I had no idea they were so exciting. My son had to earn enough on his pig\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well now, wait\u2014why are they exciting? I\u2019ve got to ask that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness. They\u2019re exciting because you\u2019re auctioning them off\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you\u2019re auctioning\u2014basically, the county comes together. It\u2019s a way for the county to support the kids and the programs. It\u2019s so exciting! Have you ever seen a rabbit sell for $800?\u2014that\u2019s exciting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I would think it would be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To the owner of the rabbit, particularly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> The kids are happy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Anyway, my son had to earn so much money. We knew how much he had to make in order to buy his ticket. He had named his pig Australia. When we get there, there were 13 of our family waiting in the seats there. I\u2019m waving at my friends\u2014my husband was having a heart attack because he was thinking I was waving and the auctioneer is going to count it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To take your bid. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014and we\u2019re going to buy a $5,000 sheep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son gets up there. He got third-place pig in the whole fair, which was so awesome for his first time. He needed\u2014I think the first-place pig made $350\u2014David needed to make at least that. We thought, \u201cWell, there\u2019s no way our son\u2019s going to make $350 because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s third place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sure, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014\u201che\u2019s third place.\u201d How sad! Poor guy isn\u2019t going to Australia. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey did it\u2014they auctioned it off\u2014$400\u2014the gavel came crashing down. Our son flew to Australia. His plane landed in Brisbane, Australia, where he got to be a jackaroo. I tell this story, when I share with parents at conferences or at women\u2019s conferences, about entitlement and how we are robbing from our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We\u2019re stealing opportunities. We\u2019re really strangling the Holy Spirit because how do we expect to raise independent, God-honoring, hard-working children if we don\u2019t allow them those opportunities? We can\u2019t expect our kids to want to lean on God if they\u2019re not doing it now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s some serious bacon\u2014that\u2019s all I can say. [Laughter] That must have been some really good bacon!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> We steal from our kids. I\u2019ll tell you what was kind of interesting\u2014we get to the San Francisco airport. My son was getting ready to get on the plane. Every single person there, I believed, was a terrorist\u2014you couldn\u2019t tell me differently. [Laughter] The cute little Swedish grandmother, with a bun\u2014she had a shoe bomb\u2014I knew it! My husband took my son aside. He touched his eyes, and he touched his mouth, and he touched his heart\u2014he said, \u201cKeep them holy, son.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s cool. That\u2019s cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You invited your oldest two kids\u2014your son and your daughter\u2014to add a chapter to this book and they didn\u2019t. They fell through on the deal; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> You share everything I\u2019m telling you; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But your daughter, Meghan, wrote you a letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes, she did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Read for our listeners what Meghan had to say about the radical sabbatical and her reflection on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Joanne:<\/strong> Yes. I did ask both of my children because I wanted to give parents a true glimpse into our life: \u201cHow many kids really were interested in doing this?\u201d It wasn\u2019t perfect\u2014my son didn\u2019t enjoy it. He wasn\u2019t happy he was taken off of the pitching mound. I didn\u2019t want to edit it, but parts of it I did because she shares the truth to me in this letter. She says:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDear Mom, it\u2019s early in the morning as I reach back into my own memory, bringing forth our radical sabbatical into lessons I learned so long ago. It was New Year\u2019s Eve and I was ecstatic to be with family friends rather than staying home, which promised a much earlier bedtime. While I was engaging myself with friends, you began to concoct an idea that was to begin in a mere couple of hours. I was oblivious to your thoughts as you received support from Dad, felt questioning from yourself, and set your mind to twist our lives around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut truthfully, Mom, if I knew your radical plan, I probably wouldn\u2019t have thought much about it because early on New Year\u2019s Day, when you and Dad called a family meeting, after our devotion, I thought this was another of your little phases\u2014like the lemonade stand you painted and we used once, or the move we were going to make to Texas, or the family trip we were supposed to take to Washington, DC, that never materialized. I wasn\u2019t worried. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, this was a phase. You would break down in the spring, when we signed up for soccer. There was no way you were going to cut my weekly singing lessons\u2014you were Mom\u2014the nice one!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went to you with cut knees and broken little hearts. You made yummy dinners and talked to Dad in the late hours of the night if he was too hard on us. Yet, somehow, your creative mind, usually used for good, warped with exhaustion and spun out your radical sabbatical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou didn\u2019t change your mind. We learned that extremely fast; and our activities, as a family, changed quickly. Our ice skating escapade was an exhausting, expensive wreck. We suffered through Daffodil Hill. However, we also turned our fingers all colors of purple and blue as we picked berries. We had movie nights, filled with laughter, and long car rides discovering the town we grew up in. I found out that Dad was pretty funny and I wouldn\u2019t die if my hand brushed my brother David\u2019s in the car. I learned sharing drinks with my siblings wasn\u2019t poisonous and school friends weren\u2019t always the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI find it funny that my hardest year in high school was the year of the radical sabbatical. I cried for the first time at school after the experience of a fire-spitting bully. I found myself with an overwhelming crush on a boy who simply liked the idea of being liked, and I lost my best girlfriend to a young man she found more important than me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>17:00<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that during our sabbatical year, you held me more than you had in quite a while, allowing your arms to run with hot tears and shirts to soak with salty heartbreak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that I think about it, our year-long sabbatical experiment not only taught me about being too busy, but about my mom. I was no longer too busy\u2014but now I had time to see who you really were. As a parent, you have had an immeasurable impact on me. Not only do I look like you and make your facial expressions, but I dream like you and think like you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour lessons spanning from simple childhood \u201cDo this,\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t do that,\u201d of stealing and sharing, or how to treat others who are different than me with the love of God and form honoring relationships have stuck with me. Each tidbit of advice from sidelong whispers to messages on Facebook has glued themselves to my psyche. Your words have never died in my heart. If I disagree or disobey, they are still there, sticking like sharp pangs and hot needles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Mom, your words get to affect others. The advice I get for free is going to have a price tag on it and sit on a shelf. I am so proud of you and that I get to call you \u201cMom.\u201d\u00a0 Your life has taught me so much and helped create the person I am now. I might struggle and give in to the urges of the young, but you\u2019re always somewhere in my mind. You\u2019ve done well, if I do say so myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur sabbatical taught me I can enjoy my life rather than allow busyness to drive it away. Thank you for giving me this lesson so young. I will, one day, be able to love my husband and spend time with my children and be able to guard myself from being painfully selfish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you knew the way I felt about you then and the way I feel about you now, I am sure you would be encouraged. I remember telling people that, if I had only one child, I wanted a girl. You know why? Because I wanted to be a mom\u2014a confidante\u2014to someone in the same way you were to me. One of my biggest dreams is to be like you. I really hope I encourage parents to hold onto the reins\u2014that if they know they\u2019re doing the God-honoring thing\u2014turning their focus on their family, and on their children, and their time to their husbands and their kids\u2014God honors that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He does. As you were talking there, I couldn\u2019t help but think\u2014and we don\u2019t think of this passage being for a mother\/daughter. It was actually the Apostle Paul writing a letter to his spiritual son, Timothy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cFor I am already being poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a father\u2019s heart \/ it could be a mom\u2019s heart too\u2014of running the race well and passing the baton to the next generation. It really sounds like Meghan got it. You did do a good job, Joanne.
