We\u2019re going to help get you ready for those today. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. There are some topics\u2014as you\u2019re raising kids, some topics that can come up\u2014either come up in the home or come up in the news\/in the culture that, as a parent, you just go: \u201cI would rather not have to deal with that right now. I\u2019d rather not have to talk about that. I don\u2019t know what to say!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou felt like that when you were raising your kids; didn\u2019t you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did; and the Scriptures really warn us, as dads\u2014but I think also moms\u2014even though the Bible doesn\u2019t have a mother\u2019s name right there. It says, \u201cFathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what can make children angry is if their parents stick their head in the sand about issues that these kids are facing\u2014as they go to school, as they play sports, as they\u2019re watching the news\u2014and not explain it. I remember when our youngest, Laura, was still at home. There was some national news around sex\u2014that really demanded that we have to have a conversation with her, even though she was only\u2014as I recall\u201413 or 14 years old. I would have preferred only to have had that conversation with her <em>maybe<\/em> before she got married; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But when it\u2019s on the evening news every night, you have to address it; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You do. You have to press into it, with sweaty palms and a shaking heart\u2014not knowing all the answers and maybe not even knowing all of what you\u2019re going to say before you say it. You can\u2019t stick your head in the sand in this culture today and raise children. They demand more than that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and especially if you\u2019re following the blueprints of Scripture because this is a gritty book\u2014this isn\u2019t about some kind of fairy tale.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is about the <em>ugliness<\/em> of humanity and our need for a Savior. We have a couple of authors with us today, who have written a book called, <em>Answering Your Kids\u2019 Toughest Questions<\/em>. Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson join us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jessica, Elyse, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Thanks so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As mother and daughter, they have collaborated together to tackle some really tough issues. We\u2019re not going to get to all of these today, but let me just list some of the issues we have to talk about today\u2014natural disasters: \u201cWhy does God allow a hurricane, or a tsunami, or a tornado?\u201d We lost a staff member, here at FamilyLife, less than a year ago, to a tornado\u2014and two of his daughters\/teenage daughters. \u201cWhy does God allow that?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cterrorism\u2014what about divorce, suicide, doubt?\u2014or, as we talked about earlier, pornography?\u201d How do you deal with these questions? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, I\u2019m going to take you to one of the top issues that kids will ask about and that\u2019s about death\u2014maybe it\u2019s a grandparent\u2019s death, maybe it\u2019s a child or a classmate at school. How do you handle the question when your child comes home, Jessica, and says, \u201cMom, what happens when people die?\u201d or \u201cWhy was she allowed to die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; actually, as I was writing this chapter on death, both my grandparents had passed away within six weeks, I think, of each other. As I was writing this chapter, it was still very fresh for me. So, walking my kids through that was a very difficult thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things that is hard for kids to understand is: \u201cWell, you say that they go to heaven; but at a funeral I see them right there. How are they in heaven and right here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne thing that we want to talk to our kids about is\u2014what it means to have a soul. This body is like our home. We\u2019ll come home now\u2014after we do this interview, we\u2019ll fly home and I\u2019ll go in my home. It\u2019s the same thing\u2014your soul is using your body as your home, right now\u2014but then, when you die, your soul is in heaven with Christ, which is actually our true home. This is just a temporary dwelling place; but soon, we\u2019ll be in our <em>true <\/em>home\u2014where there will be no more sadness, no more tears, no more death\u2014we\u2019ll stay there forever. Death takes you away from here but then you\u2019re with Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That question and that answer can bring comfort, and it can bring hope. It can really minister to a child; but there\u2019s another side to that, Elyse\u2014and that\u2019s the question, when a loved one \/ a friend, who was a person you really cared about, dies\u2014they never went to church \/ didn\u2019t give any profession of faith\u2014and your child goes, \u201cSo, did Aunt Betty go to hell?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes. I don\u2019t think that any of us can answer with complete assurance; however, yes, I do believe in a literal hell. I would say to a child: \u201cWhat Jesus Christ has done is <em>so beautiful, so magnificent<\/em> \/ so glorious\u2014that to <em>refuse<\/em> that gift, and to turn your back on His incarnation\u2014His condescension in becoming a man and then living a perfect life in our place and dying our death, and then being resurrected\u2014to spurn that is a sin that is <em>so heinous<\/em> it deserves punishment, eternally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is important because you\u2019re saying that before you can really talk about hell, you have to help your child have a different understanding of sin than most kids have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And who God is, importantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s a God of justice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s a God of mercy. He does deal with people with loving kindness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You may not know\u2014back to your point\u2014you may not know what has taken place in the soul of that person; but you have a chance, in my opinion, at that point, to explain how that child can know Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Use that opportunity to explain how they can have a relationship with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And to explain that we\u2019re not simply talking about: \u201cDid that person have good behavior or bad behavior in their lives?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019re talking about: \u201cHow did that person relate to or respond to the grace of God? Did they embrace it, or did they reject it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the essence of what keeps us out of hell\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014or what consigns us to hell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We ought to be looking for opportunities to introduce our children to God. That means explaining what Jesus Christ did on my behalf, as a parent, and on the child\u2019s behalf, as a young person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take the issue of death one step further and talk about the issue of suicide. This is one that is occurring, increasingly, in our culture. When we\u2019ve done broadcasts on suicide, I\u2019m amazed to have the letters we get and how broad this is across our country. It seems that everybody is impacted around suicide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, of course, back last summer, when Robin Williams committed suicide, there were a lot of parents, who were getting questions from their kids like: \u201cHow did he do it? Why did he do it? What\u2019s going on?\u201d So, did you handle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely! I sat and talked with my boys. I don\u2019t think my daughter was there, at the time; but both of my boys asked: \u201cWait! What?\u201d They know him from movies that they\u2019ve seen\u2014<em>Night at the Museum<\/em>, <em>Jumanji<\/em>\u2014all these different movies. We talked about what comes with suicide\u2014this hopelessness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you were saying that, in the conversation of death, we get to talk about Jesus Christ. Every conversation\u2014it is like in Deuteronomy\u2014\u201cTalk about it when you walk by the way. Talk about it no matter what\u2014when you go in \/ when you come out.\u201d This is just another conversation, where we can talk to our children about: \u201cThis is what hopelessness leads to,\u201d\u2014this sort of realization that\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nothing left for me, and it\u2019s better for me now to take my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked to our kids\u2014we talked to both of our boys\u2014about we, as Christians, don\u2019t have to experience that hopelessness. Now, that\u2019s not to say that there aren\u2019t Christians who commit suicide. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that there <em>are<\/em> Christians who commit suicide\u2014I think there is a serious issue of mental illness that needs to be addressed. We talk to our kids a little bit about that too: \u201cWhat is mental illness?\u201d The beauty is\u2014for the Christian \/ for the <em>true believer<\/em>, even suicide doesn\u2019t separate you from the love of Christ. Romans 8\u2014\u201cneither death nor life\u201d\u2014nothing separates you from His love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you had this discussion\u2014I just have to add\u2014you have to use it as an opportunity to do two things with your kids. Number one, to instruct them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about how they handle a friend who may be <em>talking<\/em> about suicide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>All<\/strong>: Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This can happen at some pretty young ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t just happen in the late teens and into the 20\u2019s. This is happening at earlier\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and earlier ages. Then\u2014secondly\u2014what to do if your child ever really has suicidal thoughts? Again, this is back to the issue we talked about earlier, pornography. As a parent, we\u2019re afraid, by introducing the subject, that we\u2019re going to introduce the possibility or the idea that it might happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to get them thinking about something they wouldn\u2019t otherwise be thinking about\u2014that\u2019s our concern. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when I was a teenager, I didn\u2019t have suicidal thoughts; but I remember listening to Blood, Sweat, and Tears; okay?\u2014they\u2019re a band from the 60\u2019s. Here was David Clayton Thomas, lead singer, and he was singing, \u201c\u2026 and when I die, and when I\u2019m gone, there\u2019ll be one child born in this world to carry on.\u201d I remember thinking, \u201cSo, if I died, there\u2019ll be a child to carry on.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cThen, if I died and I went to heaven, I\u2019d be in a better place.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cWell, maybe the best thing for me\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s just the logical side of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you took the words literally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sure! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s back to what Elyse talked to Jessica about\u2014music, movies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014all have a worldview. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A child is, at some point, likely to, at least, have that thought of: \u201cI wonder what would happen. I wonder what it would feel like. I wonder, if I took these pills\u2026I wonder what death would feel like.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re going to have those thoughts. We ought to be having some kind of conversation with them about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely\u2014be proactive, please!\u2014not just leave them to look to the internet for their answers. They have questions. I don\u2019t know if we think that they\u2019re too stupid or maybe they\u2019re not fully-developed enough. Kids have questions. I think that the most important thing is to create this environment where they feel like they can ask them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> That they can ask anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Anything at all. We said that to our kids, over and over\u2014create the environment of\u2014<em>not<\/em> this huge sort of judgment: \u201cYou\u2019re not my favorite kid if you ask that question or if you broach that topic with me,\u201d\u2014that, somehow\u2014\u201cMy love for you is going to diminish,\u201d\u2014\u201cIf you ask me, \u2018Is God real?\u2019 my love for you won\u2019t diminish. My love for you will actually probably increase because it will build relationship.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And \u201cI won\u2019t freak out if you ask.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever freak out when your kids asked questions that you were uncomfortable with?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that I actually freaked out simply because I thought that I was wanting to have answers. We always were that kind of family. But, I don\u2019t think we really encouraged a lot of questions because we didn\u2019t have the kind of context that Jessica is talking about, where we were very open about our own doubts and struggles. But, I think, as you were getting older, Jessica, we began to really practice confessing our sins. It became more of an atmosphere where we could talk about our sin, but I don\u2019t know how much we actually talked about our own doubt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you notice things changing as you got older? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Well, I think, for sure. I mean\u2014as probably late high school or right around in there\u2014things definitely started changing. I think, even for <em>my <\/em>family, things have been changing even more dramatically. The more I\u2019m willing to talk to my boys\u2014when they say: \u201cI go to church, and it doesn\u2019t mean anything to me,\u201d\u2014instead of saying, \u201cOh, you just need to listen more and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ctake good notes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ctake better notes!\u201d I\u2019ve been able to say to them: \u201cThere are weeks that I go, that my heart isn\u2019t alive either\u2014like I don\u2019t feel quickened.\u201d If we can stay centered on \u201cJesus Christ is the Author and Perfecter of our faith,\u201d\u2014there\u2014that\u2019s where we can build confidence in our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, the faith issue is one of those issues that parents can have a tendency to freak out over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A child asks a question like: \u201cHow can I trust God?\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t believe there is a God,\u201d or something like that\u2014they make those statements. We can get itchy about that. When you turn on the news, and there\u2019s a question about 250,000 people dying in a natural disaster, and your child says, \u201cWell why did God allow that or cause it?\u201d\u2014did God cause that to happen, Elyse?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right; you know, that\u2019s where having built an understanding of what we would call a worldview paradigm, which is: creation, fall, redemption, consummation. We want to say: \u201cWhen the world was first created, in its beauty and goodness, there would not have been tsunamis that killed 250,000 people\u2014but, at the fall, not only did mankind fall into this bent state, but Romans 8 tells us that creation itself fell. The world is now groaning.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo I want to say, \u201cDid God set out that day to kill 250,000 people?\u201d I don\u2019t think I want to say <em>that<\/em>\u2014but what I do want to say is: \u201cGod is sovereign. He is ruling over this creation and part of what happens with sin is that the creation itself has fallen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe are waiting for the redemption of the creation, with a new heaven and a new earth, where these things will not happen anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, I could see having that conversation with my 14-year-old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now Jessica, how do you have that conversation with the six-year-old?\u2014who says, talking about creation being under the curse and groaning. Can you have that kind of conversation with a six year old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; obviously, you would use different terms. I\u2019ll go into that a little bit differently. I do think, though, that talking to them continually about this paradigm: \u201cOkay, so listen, Sweetie\u2014when God created the world, He created it perfect.\u201d I think I like to use the term, \u201cunnatural disasters,\u201d\u2014these actually <em>aren\u2019t <\/em>the way they were intended to be: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod created the world so it would be perfect, but then you know what happened?\u2014sin. Adam and Eve sinned. You know what? Where sin goes, tears go; where sin goes, death goes; unless Jesus Christ redeems it. One day\u2014one day, it\u2019ll be totally redeemed and we\u2019ll be in a place where there will be no more unnatural disasters.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cAnd in those disasters, there were some people who died who loved Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cFor them, that was the best day of their life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Because, for the believer, death is a <em>release <\/em>from the body of sin. I mean, what could be worse than living millennia after millennia in these sin-cursed bodies? So, for the believer\u2014who knows the ultimate Resurrection and who knows the Christ, who has gone before him through death, and will take him through death to Himself\u2014for the believer, as terrifying as death is, because we\u2019ve never been there \/ we\u2019ve never experienced it; it\u2019s like Christian crossing the river to the Celestial City.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> There will be someone there, with us, who will walk us to that celestial city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, what we\u2019re talking about here really is faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s: \u201cWho do you trust?\u201d and \u201cWhat story are you going to believe?\u201d What I\u2019d like to say, here, to that parent who has to have all the answers, let me tell you\u2014this world is going to throw enough stuff at you\u2014you\u2019re simply not going to be able to make practical sense out of everything you see happening. I don\u2019t think God wants us to figure it out. I think He\u2019s up to something far beyond our own imagination\u2014He\u2019s at work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we lost a granddaughter, who lived seven days. Now, how do you explain to that little girl\u2014Molly\u2019s cousins\u2014what that is all about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I look at the Book and I ask this question: \u201cShow me a better book, other than the Bible, that explains what\u2019s happened here on the planet?\u201d That yes, it is broken\u2014it groans because of its desire for redemption. He\u2019s coming back\u2014there\u2019s hope. He\u2019s going to take us out of here, and there is a place called heaven where there will not be those tears anymore. There won\u2019t be any unanswered questions because we\u2019re going to see the answer, face to face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think this is important because I think a lot of people are looking for the air-tight case for Christianity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that leaves no questions unanswered\u2014and that the truth is\u2014we\u2019re not going to make that case.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If you could answer them all,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019d be God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay. I just say\u2014to the parent: \u201cIt\u2019s okay not to know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt is okay not to know\u201d; but it is, I think, important to say to your child: \u201cYou know, as we look at these things, we are going to doubt \/ we are going to struggle. We are going to have unanswered questions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the preponderance of evidence\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s back to my statement that I have quoted Tom Skinner\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tom Skinner; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014Tom Skinner on, years ago. This is really one of the key statements that turned my faith in the right direction when I was in college as well\u2014Jessica, as you shared earlier. He said this\u2014he said: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I\u2019d better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape. And that is a great relief!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s that kind of understanding that you\u2019re trying to help moms, dads, and kids come to as they battle with hard questions. These are legitimately hard questions that you\u2019re tackling, here, in your book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are issues like homosexuality, pornography, violence in the home, abuse, war, terror\u2014all of the issues that we\u2019re facing in our culture today. It\u2019s legitimate for kids to have questions about that; and parents need to have a thoughtful response, even if it doesn\u2019t answer the question completely. I don\u2019t know what to say!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou felt like that when you were raising your kids; didn\u2019t you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did; and the Scriptures really warn us, as dads\u2014but I think also moms\u2014even though the Bible doesn\u2019t have a mother\u2019s name right there. It says, \u201cFathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what can make children angry is if their parents stick their head in the sand about issues that these kids are facing\u2014as they go to school, as they play sports, as they\u2019re watching the news\u2014and not explain it. I remember when our youngest, Laura, was still at home. There was some national news around sex\u2014that really demanded that we have to have a conversation with her, even though she was only\u2014as I recall\u201413 or 14 years old. I would have preferred only to have had that conversation with her <em>maybe<\/em> before she got married; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But when it\u2019s on the evening news every night, you have to address it; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You do. You have to press into it, with sweaty palms and a shaking heart\u2014not knowing all the answers and maybe not even knowing all of what you\u2019re going to say before you say it. You can\u2019t stick your head in the sand in this culture today and raise children. They demand more than that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and especially if you\u2019re following the blueprints of Scripture because this is a gritty book\u2014this isn\u2019t about some kind of fairy tale.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is about the <em>ugliness<\/em> of humanity and our need for a Savior. We have a couple of authors with us today, who have written a book called, <em>Answering Your Kids\u2019 Toughest Questions<\/em>. Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson join us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jessica, Elyse, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Thanks so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As mother and daughter, they have collaborated together to tackle some really tough issues. We\u2019re not going to get to all of these today, but let me just list some of the issues we have to talk about today\u2014natural disasters: \u201cWhy does God allow a hurricane, or a tsunami, or a tornado?\u201d We lost a staff member, here at FamilyLife, less than a year ago, to a tornado\u2014and two of his daughters\/teenage daughters. \u201cWhy does God allow that?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cterrorism\u2014what about divorce, suicide, doubt?\u2014or, as we talked about earlier, pornography?\u201d How do you deal with these questions? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, I\u2019m going to take you to one of the top issues that kids will ask about and that\u2019s about death\u2014maybe it\u2019s a grandparent\u2019s death, maybe it\u2019s a child or a classmate at school. How do you handle the question when your child comes home, Jessica, and says, \u201cMom, what happens when people die?\u201d or \u201cWhy was she allowed to die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; actually, as I was writing this chapter on death, both my grandparents had passed away within six weeks, I think, of each other. As I was writing this chapter, it was still very fresh for me. So, walking my kids through that was a very difficult thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things that is hard for kids to understand is: \u201cWell, you say that they go to heaven; but at a funeral I see them right there. How are they in heaven and right here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne thing that we want to talk to our kids about is\u2014what it means to have a soul. This body is like our home. We\u2019ll come home now\u2014after we do this interview, we\u2019ll fly home and I\u2019ll go in my home. It\u2019s the same thing\u2014your soul is using your body as your home, right now\u2014but then, when you die, your soul is in heaven with Christ, which is actually our true home. This is just a temporary dwelling place; but soon, we\u2019ll be in our <em>true <\/em>home\u2014where there will be no more sadness, no more tears, no more death\u2014we\u2019ll stay there forever. Death takes you away from here but then you\u2019re with Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That question and that answer can bring comfort, and it can bring hope. It can really minister to a child; but there\u2019s another side to that, Elyse\u2014and that\u2019s the question, when a loved one \/ a friend, who was a person you really cared about, dies\u2014they never went to church \/ didn\u2019t give any profession of faith\u2014and your child goes, \u201cSo, did Aunt Betty go to hell?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes. I don\u2019t think that any of us can answer with complete assurance; however, yes, I do believe in a literal hell. I would say to a child: \u201cWhat Jesus Christ has done is <em>so beautiful, so magnificent<\/em> \/ so glorious\u2014that to <em>refuse<\/em> that gift, and to turn your back on His incarnation\u2014His condescension in becoming a man and then living a perfect life in our place and dying our death, and then being resurrected\u2014to spurn that is a sin that is <em>so heinous<\/em> it deserves punishment, eternally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is important because you\u2019re saying that before you can really talk about hell, you have to help your child have a different understanding of sin than most kids have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And who God is, importantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s a God of justice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s a God of mercy. He does deal with people with loving kindness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You may not know\u2014back to your point\u2014you may not know what has taken place in the soul of that person; but you have a chance, in my opinion, at that point, to explain how that child can know Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Use that opportunity to explain how they can have a relationship with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And to explain that we\u2019re not simply talking about: \u201cDid that person have good behavior or bad behavior in their lives?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019re talking about: \u201cHow did that person relate to or respond to the grace of God? Did they embrace it, or did they reject it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the essence of what keeps us out of hell\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014or what consigns us to hell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We ought to be looking for opportunities to introduce our children to God. That means explaining what Jesus Christ did on my behalf, as a parent, and on the child\u2019s behalf, as a young person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to take the issue of death one step further and talk about the issue of suicide. This is one that is occurring, increasingly, in our culture. When we\u2019ve done broadcasts on suicide, I\u2019m amazed to have the letters we get and how broad this is across our country. It seems that everybody is impacted around suicide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, of course, back last summer, when Robin Williams committed suicide, there were a lot of parents, who were getting questions from their kids like: \u201cHow did he do it? Why did he do it? What\u2019s going on?\u201d So, did you handle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely! I sat and talked with my boys. I don\u2019t think my daughter was there, at the time; but both of my boys asked: \u201cWait! What?\u201d They know him from movies that they\u2019ve seen\u2014<em>Night at the Museum<\/em>, <em>Jumanji<\/em>\u2014all these different movies. We talked about what comes with suicide\u2014this hopelessness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you were saying that, in the conversation of death, we get to talk about Jesus Christ. Every conversation\u2014it is like in Deuteronomy\u2014\u201cTalk about it when you walk by the way. Talk about it no matter what\u2014when you go in \/ when you come out.\u201d This is just another conversation, where we can talk to our children about: \u201cThis is what hopelessness leads to,\u201d\u2014this sort of realization that\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nothing left for me, and it\u2019s better for me now to take my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked to our kids\u2014we talked to both of our boys\u2014about we, as Christians, don\u2019t have to experience that hopelessness. Now, that\u2019s not to say that there aren\u2019t Christians who commit suicide. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that there <em>are<\/em> Christians who commit suicide\u2014I think there is a serious issue of mental illness that needs to be addressed. We talk to our kids a little bit about that too: \u201cWhat is mental illness?\u201d The beauty is\u2014for the Christian \/ for the <em>true believer<\/em>, even suicide doesn\u2019t separate you from the love of Christ. Romans 8\u2014\u201cneither death nor life\u201d\u2014nothing separates you from His love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you had this discussion\u2014I just have to add\u2014you have to use it as an opportunity to do two things with your kids. Number one, to instruct them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about how they handle a friend who may be <em>talking<\/em> about suicide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>All<\/strong>: Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This can happen at some pretty young ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t just happen in the late teens and into the 20\u2019s. This is happening at earlier\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and earlier ages. Then\u2014secondly\u2014what to do if your child ever really has suicidal thoughts? Again, this is back to the issue we talked about earlier, pornography. As a parent, we\u2019re afraid, by introducing the subject, that we\u2019re going to introduce the possibility or the idea that it might happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to get them thinking about something they wouldn\u2019t otherwise be thinking about\u2014that\u2019s our concern. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when I was a teenager, I didn\u2019t have suicidal thoughts; but I remember listening to Blood, Sweat, and Tears; okay?\u2014they\u2019re a band from the 60\u2019s. Here was David Clayton Thomas, lead singer, and he was singing, \u201c\u2026 and when I die, and when I\u2019m gone, there\u2019ll be one child born in this world to carry on.\u201d I remember thinking, \u201cSo, if I died, there\u2019ll be a child to carry on.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cThen, if I died and I went to heaven, I\u2019d be in a better place.\u201d Then I thought, \u201cWell, maybe the best thing for me\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, it\u2019s just the logical side of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you took the words literally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sure! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s back to what Elyse talked to Jessica about\u2014music, movies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014all have a worldview. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A child is, at some point, likely to, at least, have that thought of: \u201cI wonder what would happen. I wonder what it would feel like. I wonder, if I took these pills\u2026I wonder what death would feel like.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re going to have those thoughts. We ought to be having some kind of conversation with them about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely\u2014be proactive, please!\u2014not just leave them to look to the internet for their answers. They have questions. I don\u2019t know if we think that they\u2019re too stupid or maybe they\u2019re not fully-developed enough. Kids have questions. I think that the most important thing is to create this environment where they feel like they can ask them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> That they can ask anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Anything at all. We said that to our kids, over and over\u2014create the environment of\u2014<em>not<\/em> this huge sort of judgment: \u201cYou\u2019re not my favorite kid if you ask that question or if you broach that topic with me,\u201d\u2014that, somehow\u2014\u201cMy love for you is going to diminish,\u201d\u2014\u201cIf you ask me, \u2018Is God real?\u2019 my love for you won\u2019t diminish. My love for you will actually probably increase because it will build relationship.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And \u201cI won\u2019t freak out if you ask.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever freak out when your kids asked questions that you were uncomfortable with?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that I actually freaked out simply because I thought that I was wanting to have answers. We always were that kind of family. But, I don\u2019t think we really encouraged a lot of questions because we didn\u2019t have the kind of context that Jessica is talking about, where we were very open about our own doubts and struggles. But, I think, as you were getting older, Jessica, we began to really practice confessing our sins. It became more of an atmosphere where we could talk about our sin, but I don\u2019t know how much we actually talked about our own doubt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you notice things changing as you got older? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Well, I think, for sure. I mean\u2014as probably late high school or right around in there\u2014things definitely started changing. I think, even for <em>my <\/em>family, things have been changing even more dramatically. The more I\u2019m willing to talk to my boys\u2014when they say: \u201cI go to church, and it doesn\u2019t mean anything to me,\u201d\u2014instead of saying, \u201cOh, you just need to listen more and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ctake good notes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> \u2014\u201ctake better notes!\u201d I\u2019ve been able to say to them: \u201cThere are weeks that I go, that my heart isn\u2019t alive either\u2014like I don\u2019t feel quickened.\u201d If we can stay centered on \u201cJesus Christ is the Author and Perfecter of our faith,\u201d\u2014there\u2014that\u2019s where we can build confidence in our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, the faith issue is one of those issues that parents can have a tendency to freak out over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A child asks a question like: \u201cHow can I trust God?\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t believe there is a God,\u201d or something like that\u2014they make those statements. We can get itchy about that. When you turn on the news, and there\u2019s a question about 250,000 people dying in a natural disaster, and your child says, \u201cWell why did God allow that or cause it?\u201d\u2014did God cause that to happen, Elyse?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right; you know, that\u2019s where having built an understanding of what we would call a worldview paradigm, which is: creation, fall, redemption, consummation. We want to say: \u201cWhen the world was first created, in its beauty and goodness, there would not have been tsunamis that killed 250,000 people\u2014but, at the fall, not only did mankind fall into this bent state, but Romans 8 tells us that creation itself fell. The world is now groaning.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo I want to say, \u201cDid God set out that day to kill 250,000 people?\u201d I don\u2019t think I want to say <em>that<\/em>\u2014but what I do want to say is: \u201cGod is sovereign. He is ruling over this creation and part of what happens with sin is that the creation itself has fallen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe are waiting for the redemption of the creation, with a new heaven and a new earth, where these things will not happen anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, I could see having that conversation with my 14-year-old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now Jessica, how do you have that conversation with the six-year-old?\u2014who says, talking about creation being under the curse and groaning. Can you have that kind of conversation with a six year old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; obviously, you would use different terms. I\u2019ll go into that a little bit differently. I do think, though, that talking to them continually about this paradigm: \u201cOkay, so listen, Sweetie\u2014when God created the world, He created it perfect.\u201d I think I like to use the term, \u201cunnatural disasters,\u201d\u2014these actually <em>aren\u2019t <\/em>the way they were intended to be: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod created the world so it would be perfect, but then you know what happened?\u2014sin. Adam and Eve sinned. You know what? Where sin goes, tears go; where sin goes, death goes; unless Jesus Christ redeems it. One day\u2014one day, it\u2019ll be totally redeemed and we\u2019ll be in a place where there will be no more unnatural disasters.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cAnd in those disasters, there were some people who died who loved Jesus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cFor them, that was the best day of their life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Because, for the believer, death is a <em>release <\/em>from the body of sin. I mean, what could be worse than living millennia after millennia in these sin-cursed bodies? So, for the believer\u2014who knows the ultimate Resurrection and who knows the Christ, who has gone before him through death, and will take him through death to Himself\u2014for the believer, as terrifying as death is, because we\u2019ve never been there \/ we\u2019ve never experienced it; it\u2019s like Christian crossing the river to the Celestial City.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> There will be someone there, with us, who will walk us to that celestial city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, what we\u2019re talking about here really is faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s: \u201cWho do you trust?\u201d and \u201cWhat story are you going to believe?\u201d What I\u2019d like to say, here, to that parent who has to have all the answers, let me tell you\u2014this world is going to throw enough stuff at you\u2014you\u2019re simply not going to be able to make practical sense out of everything you see happening. I don\u2019t think God wants us to figure it out. I think He\u2019s up to something far beyond our own imagination\u2014He\u2019s at work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we lost a granddaughter, who lived seven days. Now, how do you explain to that little girl\u2014Molly\u2019s cousins\u2014what that is all about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I look at the Book and I ask this question: \u201cShow me a better book, other than the Bible, that explains what\u2019s happened here on the planet?\u201d That yes, it is broken\u2014it groans because of its desire for redemption. He\u2019s coming back\u2014there\u2019s hope. He\u2019s going to take us out of here, and there is a place called heaven where there will not be those tears anymore. There won\u2019t be any unanswered questions because we\u2019re going to see the answer, face to face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think this is important because I think a lot of people are looking for the air-tight case for Christianity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that leaves no questions unanswered\u2014and that the truth is\u2014we\u2019re not going to make that case.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If you could answer them all,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019d be God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay. I just say\u2014to the parent: \u201cIt\u2019s okay not to know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt is okay not to know\u201d; but it is, I think, important to say to your child: \u201cYou know, as we look at these things, we are going to doubt \/ we are going to struggle. We are going to have unanswered questions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the preponderance of evidence\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s back to my statement that I have quoted Tom Skinner\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tom Skinner; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014Tom Skinner on, years ago. This is really one of the key statements that turned my faith in the right direction when I was in college as well\u2014Jessica, as you shared earlier. He said this\u2014he said: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I\u2019d better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape. And that is a great relief!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s that kind of understanding that you\u2019re trying to help moms, dads, and kids come to as they battle with hard questions. These are legitimately hard questions that you\u2019re tackling, here, in your book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are issues like homosexuality, pornography, violence in the home, abuse, war, terror\u2014all of the issues that we\u2019re facing in our culture today. It\u2019s legitimate for kids to have questions about that; and parents need to have a thoughtful response, even if it doesn\u2019t answer the question completely. In fact, I know the church that this guy goes to; and I knew that their church would be willing to scholarship this couple to attend the getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI drove away from that lunch, thinking to myself: \u201cWhat would I do in situations like that if I didn\u2019t have <em>FamilyLife<\/em> to point people to?
