Last Sunday, at your church, was there any mention of the fact that Easter is coming?\u00a0 Here\u2019s the co-creator of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>, Phil Vischer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>I grew up in a church that had kind of thrown away the church calendar, like many evangelical churches. So, we had kind of cut it back down to just: \u201cWe\u2019re going to wave around some palm fronds one Sunday and, then, have eggs the next Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014the completely secularized Easter is a one-day affair. The church Easter, actually, starts several weeks in advance; and you\u2019ve got the whole Holy Week of stuff to do. I\u2019m seeing more and more churches, including my own, go back to \u201cWhat are the stations of the Cross?\u201d\u00a0 So, it\u2019s the story: \u201cJesus is alive!\u00a0 He is risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the end of the story. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>I only know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I really did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014because every now and then I get a promotional piece in the mail from some publisher. And then, I\u2019ll say, \u201cLook, they raised the number again!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019re not done creating. You have created a book, just talking about \u201cWhat is Easter?\u201d and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s the name of the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>That is the name of the book\u2014it\u2019s simple. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You tried to design that for all of us to be able to get accessible to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Phil: <\/strong>Well, you want to know: \u201cWhat is this book?\u00a0 What am I buying here?\u00a0 What do I get?\u00a0 What\u2026\u201d and it tells you very easily. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You think about Easter\u2014and we think about it, often, in relationship to Christmas because these are\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014our two big bookend holidays on the life of Jesus. Christmas gets all the press. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, Christmas keeps getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger. Easter is now in the same category\u2014I think Halloween is now past Easter in size. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In terms of economics and participation?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. We rank our holidays based on economic impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>There needs to be more\u2014I was in Wal-Mart<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> a year ago. I noticed they were running an Easter promotion that said, \u201cWal-Mart: Get more Easter for your money.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember thinking, \u201cHow do you measure the quantity of Easter that you have?\u201d\u00a0 And the only thing I could come up with was marshmallow Peeps<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014just sheer cubic feet of marshmallow Peeps is what we are looking for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, is that what you bought when you went in there, then?\u00a0 You took a whole truckload?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Whoa! \u201cBoy, do I have a lot of Easter for <em>my<\/em> money!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you have Easter memories\u2014compelling childhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Compelling?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014Easter memories?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>I think\u2014yes, I grew up in small-town Iowa\u2014in a town of about 25,000 on the Mississippi River. And we would go over to my grandparents\u2019 house for Easter egg hunts. And that\u2019s kind of what Easter was. I don\u2019t remember a whole lot of explanation as to what that had to do with Jesus, but we would go over and hunt Easter eggs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember, as a kid?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was about the same. I grew up in the Midwest as well, and it was about visiting grandma\u2019s and grandpa\u2019s house and being kind of chilly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And the other tradition, which I also could not connect\u2014I don\u2019t know if your Easter meals\u2014if you had a lamb made of butter. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No, we didn\u2019t. Did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>The butter lamb. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were in Iowa\u2014Iowa, remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, we had butter lambs\u2014it is butter shaped into a lamb. That had something to do with something I was sure\u2014I wasn\u2019t sure if it was bunny-related or egg-related: \u201cDid the lamb lay the egg that the bunny delivers?\u201d\u00a0 So, we had all these animals going on\u2014these animals in play. And the butter lamb\u2014and of course, the first person gets to take a chunk out of the butter lamb. I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019re supposed to say something in Hebrew or you know\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Take a leg or do you take\u2014just chop the head off the lamb to start with?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you have a basket\u2014an Easter basket\u2014as a boy, growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have the green\u2014you know\u2014the green grass?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, the fake grass. In fact, when we did <em>An Easter Carol<\/em>, the <em>VeggieTales<\/em> special, we made a factory. One of the things that that factory was going to produce was the artificial grass. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Easter was becoming more and more artificial, we needed plastic eggs because the real ones don\u2019t last long enough and plastic grass because the real grass fades out. And that was\u2014Mr. Nezzer was running that scam until his factory blew up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the bottom line for this\u2014that you are really challenging parents today \/ grandparents\u2014to really think through, \u201cWhat are you going to do with Easter?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, I think we need to think through our traditions because kids deserve to know \u201cWhy?\u201d I spoke at Christmas in our church on Christmas Eve\u2014I did the Christmas Eve service. The first thing I did was just get up and say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d because I don\u2019t think we ask that question enough\u2014I think we <em>assume<\/em> that we know: \u201cI\u2019m <em>not<\/em> going to ask because then I\u2019ll look like I\u2019m dumb.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSurely, we know why we are here, on Christmas Eve\u201d; but I spent 20 minutes unpacking why we were here on Christmas Eve\u2014\u201cWhat are we celebrating?\u201d\u00a0 And we need to do that with our kids. We drag them along to these traditions; but we never say, \u201cHere\u2019s why.\u201d And then, like with Christmas\u2014and this is why the first thing that I did was a book and a video explaining Christmas--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014was: \u201cWhat does Jesus have to do with Santa?\u201d because we\u2019ve got multiple Christmases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut now, you turn your attention to Easter; and you say: \u201cWell, we kind of have the same thing\u2014we have multiple Easters.\u201d\u00a0 We have the Easter at church of Jesus and the tomb and \u201cHe\u2019s risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we go home and turn on the TV; and it\u2019s \u201cHere comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail,\u201d and \u201cHere are your eggs,\u201d and \u201cHere is your candy,\u201d and \u201cHere is your butter lamb.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And \u201cI don\u2019t know what this stuff means!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what is the big idea of Easter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>The idea of Easter is very simple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I hope he knows\u2014don\u2019t you?\u00a0 I hope that was one of those softball questions. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, \u201cHe is risen. He is risen, indeed!\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the\u2014Easter is the bookend to Christmas. And when we walk kids through it\u2014in <em>What\u2019s in the Bible?<\/em> and the DVD series\u2014it starts with the fall\u2014that\u2019s where Easter starts. That\u2019s one of the reasons some of these holidays don\u2019t mean anything to our kids\u2014is because we\u2019ve kind of skipped over teaching them about sin\u2014teaching them about the problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you don\u2019t know what the problem is, the solution doesn\u2019t really make any sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t have a <em>need<\/em> for Easter because you don\u2019t need a Savior who has defeated\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014death and has paid for our sins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really does kind of feel like Jesus\u2019 resurrection is more like a <em>Ripley\u2019s Believe It or Not!<\/em> than it is the monumental\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cCan you believe what happened?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, as opposed to this monumental event in human history\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that brings redemption, that brings hope \/ that brings new life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And it\u2019s so important\u2014you know, the early church didn\u2019t celebrate Christmas because they didn\u2019t celebrate people\u2019s birthdays. They just didn\u2019t\u2014birthdays weren\u2019t that important. Easter was everything for the early church because it was the source of their hope. Easter is why we have hope. You know, if Christ did not rise, then, we should be pitied among all men because we are just going through the motions for something that is meaningless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd what I tried to do with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>\u2014with the Christmas specials\u2014when I did <em>The Star of Christmas<\/em> and <em>An Easter Carol<\/em> was put the two together in a story that continued so you can see how they bookend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristmas is God inserting Himself in history to bring the solution. Easter is the solution. So, you can\u2019t have one without the other. And we\u2019ve turned Christmas into the Super Bowl of holidays. Easter has just become a different reason to put sugar and marshmallow in a different form and color and sell it to us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Phil, the opportunity for parents to teach their kids about the historicity\/the nature of what happened at Easter\u2014Christ lived, He died, He defeated death\u2014and there is evidence that He is alive today\u2014that our faith is not in vain. It really is an opportunity to be teaching your kids an apologetic for their faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was Josh McDowell, for me, on the college campus, when I was a college junior, who taught me about the proof for the resurrection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Huh?\u00a0 Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that was one of the key components of lighting my fire to be a true Christ-follower and say:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cIf He did defeat death, He\u2019s the only One who has.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and your wife\u2019s been working on all kinds of resources designed to equip\u2014to open up the conversation about what the meaning of Easter is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, this is really her soapbox. She is all about wanting to help families reclaim this holiday and to teach the truth about what took place on Easter weekend, and do it over a period of a week. She\u2019s created a resource called Behold the Lamb that is a group of stories that walk you through, starting with Palm Sunday, and gives you an overview of what took place on Palm Sunday. And it gives you a little card that you open up and you can read this aloud to your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it goes through Monday, where it talks about Jesus being the bread of life; Tuesday, \u201cI am the Light of the World\u201d; Wednesday, \u201cI am the Door\u201d; Thursday, \u201cI am the Good Shepherd\u201d; \u201cI am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,\u201d on Good Friday; and then, Saturday, \u201cI am the True Vine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, \u201cI am the Resurrection and the Life,\u201d on Resurrection Sunday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Phil, what Barbara has done here is\u2014during Holy Week\u2014is really help parents reclaim this holiday, to your very point, around its purpose to teach our kids about the resurrection of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Here\u2019s another problem, though, because some of the symbols of Easter that we know so well\u2014bunnies and eggs, in particular\u2014we no longer see their connection with the gospel message. But what Jesus said was, \u201cI have come to bring life and bring it to you abundantly,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s about <em>new<\/em> life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, then, you get to Easter; and you look at an egg. You say, \u201cWhat does an egg represent?\u201d\u00a0 Ding, ding, ding!\u2014<em>new life<\/em>!\u2014that\u2019s what it represents!\u00a0 Why are bunnies a symbol for Easter?\u2014because, every spring, a gazillion new bunnies show up\u2014<em>it\u2019s new life<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, even in the book for kids, we unpack this by saying: \u201cOkay, let\u2019s talk about winter. What happens in winter?\u00a0 Are there new eggs in winter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDo your trees have leaves in winter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre there baby bunnies in winter?\u201d \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThere is <em>no new life<\/em> in winter; but then, we hit spring. Suddenly, we\u2019ve got bunnies, we\u2019ve got eggs, we\u2019ve got little chicks, we\u2019ve got flowers, we\u2019ve got green grass\u2014the world explodes in new life every spring. And guess when Easter happens?\u00a0 It happens in spring!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, these symbols connect: Jesus, when He died on the cross\u2014it was like winter forever. Then, he rose again; and it was spring. And that\u2019s the new life that we celebrate at Easter which is why eggs and bunnies are actually the perfect symbol because they\u2019ve been symbols forever, going back pre-Christian times, of <em>new life<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can\u2019t help but hear you talk about that\u2014and think about the crack in the stone table and the thaw that begins when the stone table cracks in <em>The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong> Yes. In <em>The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe<\/em>\u2014and what was the curse of that land?\u2014\u201c\u2026always winter but never Christmas.\u201d\u00a0 When that spell is broken, the first thing that happens is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Father Christmas shows up. So, Christmas arrives, followed by the thaw, and the spring and Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you start to see the buds on the trees\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that you haven\u2019t seen before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really does tie together\u2014in fact, I\u2019m also thinking about the fact that, in the early church, the only time they did baptisms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014was on Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>They celebrated new life in Christ, once a year, with baptism services as a part of their Easter celebration. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right; right. And the church has used eggs, for example\u2014way back, in the Middle Ages, they would take eggs and paint them blood red as a symbol of Jesus so they could tell the story. We have to remember that up until the last 400 years, teaching the Bible was teaching illiterate people. So, you weren\u2019t dealing with written words. You were dealing with symbols. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when you go into an old cathedral, the whole purpose of the stained glass windows was to teach the stories to people who couldn\u2019t read. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, everything was in pictures somewhere. So, these symbols\u2014and we\u2019ve lost touch with symbols because we\u2019re <em>so literate<\/em> now\u2014we\u2019re always reading books, we\u2019re always reading blogs, we\u2019re always looking at words. But just an egg\u2014a red egg\u2014was all people needed, in the Middle Ages, to tell the story of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Phil, you probably don\u2019t know this story, but when <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> first started, back in the early 1990\u2019s, we had a grandma come into our studio with a basket of eggs. There was like\u2014Bob, wasn\u2019t there like 25\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in that basket?\u2014kind of a list of objects that were found in each of the eggs that told the Easter story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Okay. That was a grandma who came up with that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, she came in here; and we said, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be interesting if we put those in an egg carton\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand we offered them to our audience?\u201d\u00a0 And we did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>How did it go?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We figure around 30 million children have heard the gospel now through Resurrection Eggs<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>See, and that\u2019s a way to reclaim non-verbal story telling. It doesn\u2019t have to be written words. You can use images. You can use symbols, and it makes things <em>sticky<\/em> for kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And each of those eggs had an object\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that parents would use\u2014or Sunday school teachers, or classroom teachers in public education and Christian schools used them\u2014to open the eggs or have kids discover what was in the egg\u2014all 12 of them\u2014to ultimately explain\u2014back to what the question you are asking in your book\u2014\u201cWhat is Easter all about?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s just a brilliantly simple idea of walking through a pack of eggs to tell the story. It\u2019s a little bit like an Advent calendar, where you can tell the story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014through little windows. There is that sense of discovery, where each day: \u201cLet\u2019s open the next window,\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s open the next egg.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And every year, we get moms and dads who come to the website\u2014come to FamilyLifeToday.com\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and order sets of those because they\u2019re\u2014guess what?\u2014there are new kids being born every year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Is that true?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>New life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>New life!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>New life happening every year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How about in your family?\u00a0 You and your wife have three kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>My wife is really big on Easter baskets. She <em>loves<\/em> Easter baskets and making very elaborate Easter baskets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How do you connect your kids to the real purpose of Easter, then?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Well, my oldest is married now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But when they were growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of our listeners have got toddlers\/young children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>You know what?\u00a0 My wife\u2019s mother gave us a set of Resurrection Eggs, and we used those when my kids were young. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>So, you helped me pass that on to my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you do it differently today, I mean, given where you are in kind of this renaissance around Easter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>See, I love telling stories. I have used some of my own stories. I mean, <em>An Easter Carol<\/em> is\u2014the big one was the first <em>VeggieTales<\/em> episode, where I ever found the opportunity to tell the story of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s the only one where Jesus shows up because my mother made the rule, in the very beginning, \u201cYou will not portray Jesus as a vegetable,\u201d because she was my content advisor, having a doctorate in children\u2019s ministry. She said, \u201cNo, vegetable Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, well, how do I ever tell the story of Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we got to <em>An Easter Carol<\/em>. I realized I could do it in a church, through the stained glass windows. We could have human forms in the stained glass windows and, then, tell the story there. We had a tradition where we would watch that story, every Easter, because I\u2019m better at teaching things that way, through film, than by standing up in front at a chalkboard and trying to do it that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have developed a lot of new characters in the last five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>[In character] \u201cOh, yes! We should go buy some new shoes for the kids.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of the way it works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs there a way that moms and dads can be a little more proactive on this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, you can look for things that churches are doing because the completely secularized Easter is a one-day affair. The church Easter, actually, starts several weeks in advance; and you\u2019ve got the whole Holy Week of stuff to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a church that had kind of thrown away the church calendar, like many evangelical churches. We kind of had cut it back down to just: \u201cWe\u2019re going to wave around some palm fronds one Sunday and, then, have eggs the next Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m seeing more and more churches, including my own, go back to: \u201cWhat are the stations of the Cross?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we do something?\u201d\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve done all family events, where we\u2019ll set up the Stations of the Cross in our church, even though it\u2019s not from our tradition; but we\u2019re bringing it back from the historical church. And then, take our kids\u2014a family event\u2014where you walk your kids through the Stations of the Cross to see what Jesus did that last week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, it\u2019s the story: \u201cJesus is alive!\u00a0 He\u2019s risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s the end of the story! You can\u2019t start with end of the story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014or it doesn\u2019t make any sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think this holiday is a great opportunity for those of us who have faith to begin to become intentional and take a look at some of these various ways we can teach about Easter\u2014like your book\u2014read that aloud \/ talk about new life out of death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take kids into that experience\u2014talk about that\u2014but, also, go a little deeper and begin to equip our kids around apologetics \/ around the proof for the resurrection. Josh McDowell has got some great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And Lee Strobel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014have got some great books to help parents pass on the reality of: \u201cThe tomb is empty. You\u2019re not going to find the body because the body isn\u2019t here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHe is risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u00a0 He is in heaven; and therefore, <em>we<\/em> have hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and the book you\u2019ve written\u2014the target age group for that?\u00a0 Is that for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>It is younger kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s preschool up to early elementary. What I am trying to get across is\u2014these holidays, Christmas and Easter, have all these symbols that we don\u2019t necessarily see a connection back to Jesus\u2014whether it is Santa Claus and Christmas trees or whether it\u2019s the Easter bunny and eggs. Because we don\u2019t see the connection, we get uncomfortable with the symbols, and we kind of want to throw them away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, we do\u2014that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Then, we can strip the holidays of the kind of symbols that are easy for kids to grasp. Rather than doing that, I am trying to say, \u201cLet\u2019s unpack Santa Claus, and go all the way back to Saint Nicholas and talk about a man who <em>loved <\/em>Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, <em>now<\/em>, you can still have the symbol, and it <em>means<\/em> something to kids because you connect it back to Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for Easter: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about bunnies. Let\u2019s talk about eggs. Let\u2019s talk about <em>new life<\/em>. Let\u2019s talk about Jesus\u2019 promise: \u2018I have come to give you life that you may have it abundantly.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when you are eating the marshmallow Peep, [Laughter] you can think, \u201cI <em>know<\/em> what this is about\u2014it\u2019s about new life!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cI just ate new life!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI just ate a truckload!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cI know why I feel sick,\u201d then. churches are starting to sing Christmas carols in the Advent season. Last Sunday, at your church, was there any mention of the fact that Easter is coming?\u00a0 Here\u2019s the co-creator of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>, Phil Vischer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>I grew up in a church that had kind of thrown away the church calendar, like many evangelical churches. So, we had kind of cut it back down to just: \u201cWe\u2019re going to wave around some palm fronds one Sunday and, then, have eggs the next Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014the completely secularized Easter is a one-day affair. The church Easter, actually, starts several weeks in advance; and you\u2019ve got the whole Holy Week of stuff to do. I\u2019m seeing more and more churches, including my own, go back to \u201cWhat are the stations of the Cross?\u201d\u00a0 So, it\u2019s the story: \u201cJesus is alive!\u00a0 He is risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the end of the story. Easter is now in the same category\u2014I think Halloween is now past Easter in size. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In terms of economics and participation?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. I noticed they were running an Easter promotion that said, \u201cWal-Mart: Get more Easter for your money.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember thinking, \u201cHow do you measure the quantity of Easter that you have?\u201d\u00a0 And the only thing I could come up with was marshmallow Peeps<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014just sheer cubic feet of marshmallow Peeps is what we are looking for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, is that what you bought when you went in there, then?\u00a0 You took a whole truckload?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Whoa! \u201cBoy, do I have a lot of Easter for <em>my<\/em> money!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you have Easter memories\u2014compelling childhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Compelling?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014Easter memories?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>I think\u2014yes, I grew up in small-town Iowa\u2014in a town of about 25,000 on the Mississippi River. And we would go over to my grandparents\u2019 house for Easter egg hunts. And that\u2019s kind of what Easter was. I don\u2019t remember a whole lot of explanation as to what that had to do with Jesus, but we would go over and hunt Easter eggs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember, as a kid?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was about the same. I grew up in the Midwest as well, and it was about visiting grandma\u2019s and grandpa\u2019s house and being kind of chilly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And the other tradition, which I also could not connect\u2014I don\u2019t know if your Easter meals\u2014if you had a lamb made of butter. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No, we didn\u2019t. Did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>The butter lamb. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were in Iowa\u2014Iowa, remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, we had butter lambs\u2014it is butter shaped into a lamb. That had something to do with something I was sure\u2014I wasn\u2019t sure if it was bunny-related or egg-related: \u201cDid the lamb lay the egg that the bunny delivers?\u201d\u00a0 So, we had all these animals going on\u2014these animals in play. And the butter lamb\u2014and of course, the first person gets to take a chunk out of the butter lamb. I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019re supposed to say something in Hebrew or you know\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Take a leg or do you take\u2014just chop the head off the lamb to start with?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you have a basket\u2014an Easter basket\u2014as a boy, growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have the green\u2014you know\u2014the green grass?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, the fake grass. In fact, when we did <em>An Easter Carol<\/em>, the <em>VeggieTales<\/em> special, we made a factory. One of the things that that factory was going to produce was the artificial grass. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Easter was becoming more and more artificial, we needed plastic eggs because the real ones don\u2019t last long enough and plastic grass because the real grass fades out. And that was\u2014Mr. Nezzer was running that scam until his factory blew up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the bottom line for this\u2014that you are really challenging parents today \/ grandparents\u2014to really think through, \u201cWhat are you going to do with Easter?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, I think we need to think through our traditions because kids deserve to know \u201cWhy?\u201d I spoke at Christmas in our church on Christmas Eve\u2014I did the Christmas Eve service. The first thing I did was just get up and say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d because I don\u2019t think we ask that question enough\u2014I think we <em>assume<\/em> that we know: \u201cI\u2019m <em>not<\/em> going to ask because then I\u2019ll look like I\u2019m dumb.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSurely, we know why we are here, on Christmas Eve\u201d; but I spent 20 minutes unpacking why we were here on Christmas Eve\u2014\u201cWhat are we celebrating?\u201d\u00a0 And we need to do that with our kids. We drag them along to these traditions; but we never say, \u201cHere\u2019s why.\u201d And then, like with Christmas\u2014and this is why the first thing that I did was a book and a video explaining Christmas--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014was: \u201cWhat does Jesus have to do with Santa?\u201d because we\u2019ve got multiple Christmases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut now, you turn your attention to Easter; and you say: \u201cWell, we kind of have the same thing\u2014we have multiple Easters.\u201d\u00a0 We have the Easter at church of Jesus and the tomb and \u201cHe\u2019s risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we go home and turn on the TV; and it\u2019s \u201cHere comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail,\u201d and \u201cHere are your eggs,\u201d and \u201cHere is your candy,\u201d and \u201cHere is your butter lamb.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And \u201cI don\u2019t know what this stuff means!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what is the big idea of Easter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>The idea of Easter is very simple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I hope he knows\u2014don\u2019t you?\u00a0 I hope that was one of those softball questions. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, \u201cHe is risen. He is risen, indeed!\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the\u2014Easter is the bookend to Christmas. And when we walk kids through it\u2014in <em>What\u2019s in the Bible?<\/em> and the DVD series\u2014it starts with the fall\u2014that\u2019s where Easter starts. That\u2019s one of the reasons some of these holidays don\u2019t mean anything to our kids\u2014is because we\u2019ve kind of skipped over teaching them about sin\u2014teaching them about the problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you don\u2019t know what the problem is, the solution doesn\u2019t really make any sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t have a <em>need<\/em> for Easter because you don\u2019t need a Savior who has defeated\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014death and has paid for our sins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really does kind of feel like Jesus\u2019 resurrection is more like a <em>Ripley\u2019s Believe It or Not!<\/em> than it is the monumental\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cCan you believe what happened?!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, as opposed to this monumental event in human history\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that brings redemption, that brings hope \/ that brings new life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And it\u2019s so important\u2014you know, the early church didn\u2019t celebrate Christmas because they didn\u2019t celebrate people\u2019s birthdays. They just didn\u2019t\u2014birthdays weren\u2019t that important. Easter was everything for the early church because it was the source of their hope. Easter is why we have hope. You know, if Christ did not rise, then, we should be pitied among all men because we are just going through the motions for something that is meaningless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd what I tried to do with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>\u2014with the Christmas specials\u2014when I did <em>The Star of Christmas<\/em> and <em>An Easter Carol<\/em> was put the two together in a story that continued so you can see how they bookend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristmas is God inserting Himself in history to bring the solution. Easter is the solution. So, you can\u2019t have one without the other. And we\u2019ve turned Christmas into the Super Bowl of holidays. Easter has just become a different reason to put sugar and marshmallow in a different form and color and sell it to us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Phil, the opportunity for parents to teach their kids about the historicity\/the nature of what happened at Easter\u2014Christ lived, He died, He defeated death\u2014and there is evidence that He is alive today\u2014that our faith is not in vain. It really is an opportunity to be teaching your kids an apologetic for their faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was Josh McDowell, for me, on the college campus, when I was a college junior, who taught me about the proof for the resurrection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Huh?\u00a0 Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that was one of the key components of lighting my fire to be a true Christ-follower and say:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cIf He did defeat death, He\u2019s the only One who has.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and your wife\u2019s been working on all kinds of resources designed to equip\u2014to open up the conversation about what the meaning of Easter is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, this is really her soapbox. She is all about wanting to help families reclaim this holiday and to teach the truth about what took place on Easter weekend, and do it over a period of a week. She\u2019s created a resource called Behold the Lamb that is a group of stories that walk you through, starting with Palm Sunday, and gives you an overview of what took place on Palm Sunday. And it gives you a little card that you open up and you can read this aloud to your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it goes through Monday, where it talks about Jesus being the bread of life; Tuesday, \u201cI am the Light of the World\u201d; Wednesday, \u201cI am the Door\u201d; Thursday, \u201cI am the Good Shepherd\u201d; \u201cI am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,\u201d on Good Friday; and then, Saturday, \u201cI am the True Vine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, \u201cI am the Resurrection and the Life,\u201d on Resurrection Sunday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Phil, what Barbara has done here is\u2014during Holy Week\u2014is really help parents reclaim this holiday, to your very point, around its purpose to teach our kids about the resurrection of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Here\u2019s another problem, though, because some of the symbols of Easter that we know so well\u2014bunnies and eggs, in particular\u2014we no longer see their connection with the gospel message. But what Jesus said was, \u201cI have come to bring life and bring it to you abundantly,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s about <em>new<\/em> life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, then, you get to Easter; and you look at an egg. You say, \u201cWhat does an egg represent?\u201d\u00a0 Ding, ding, ding!\u2014<em>new life<\/em>!\u2014that\u2019s what it represents!\u00a0 Why are bunnies a symbol for Easter?\u2014because, every spring, a gazillion new bunnies show up\u2014<em>it\u2019s new life<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, even in the book for kids, we unpack this by saying: \u201cOkay, let\u2019s talk about winter. What happens in winter?\u00a0 Are there new eggs in winter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDo your trees have leaves in winter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre there baby bunnies in winter?\u201d \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThere is <em>no new life<\/em> in winter; but then, we hit spring. Suddenly, we\u2019ve got bunnies, we\u2019ve got eggs, we\u2019ve got little chicks, we\u2019ve got flowers, we\u2019ve got green grass\u2014the world explodes in new life every spring. And guess when Easter happens?\u00a0 It happens in spring!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, these symbols connect: Jesus, when He died on the cross\u2014it was like winter forever. Then, he rose again; and it was spring. And that\u2019s the new life that we celebrate at Easter which is why eggs and bunnies are actually the perfect symbol because they\u2019ve been symbols forever, going back pre-Christian times, of <em>new life<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can\u2019t help but hear you talk about that\u2014and think about the crack in the stone table and the thaw that begins when the stone table cracks in <em>The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong> Yes. In <em>The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe<\/em>\u2014and what was the curse of that land?\u2014\u201c\u2026always winter but never Christmas.\u201d\u00a0 When that spell is broken, the first thing that happens is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Father Christmas shows up. So, Christmas arrives, followed by the thaw, and the spring and Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you start to see the buds on the trees\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that you haven\u2019t seen before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really does tie together\u2014in fact, I\u2019m also thinking about the fact that, in the early church, the only time they did baptisms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014was on Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>They celebrated new life in Christ, once a year, with baptism services as a part of their Easter celebration. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right; right. And the church has used eggs, for example\u2014way back, in the Middle Ages, they would take eggs and paint them blood red as a symbol of Jesus so they could tell the story. We have to remember that up until the last 400 years, teaching the Bible was teaching illiterate people. So, you weren\u2019t dealing with written words. You were dealing with symbols. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when you go into an old cathedral, the whole purpose of the stained glass windows was to teach the stories to people who couldn\u2019t read. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, everything was in pictures somewhere. So, these symbols\u2014and we\u2019ve lost touch with symbols because we\u2019re <em>so literate<\/em> now\u2014we\u2019re always reading books, we\u2019re always reading blogs, we\u2019re always looking at words. But just an egg\u2014a red egg\u2014was all people needed, in the Middle Ages, to tell the story of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Phil, you probably don\u2019t know this story, but when <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> first started, back in the early 1990\u2019s, we had a grandma come into our studio with a basket of eggs. There was like\u2014Bob, wasn\u2019t there like 25\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in that basket?\u2014kind of a list of objects that were found in each of the eggs that told the Easter story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Okay. That was a grandma who came up with that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, she came in here; and we said, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be interesting if we put those in an egg carton\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand we offered them to our audience?\u201d\u00a0 And we did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>How did it go?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We figure around 30 million children have heard the gospel now through Resurrection Eggs<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>See, and that\u2019s a way to reclaim non-verbal story telling. It doesn\u2019t have to be written words. You can use images. You can use symbols, and it makes things <em>sticky<\/em> for kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And each of those eggs had an object\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that parents would use\u2014or Sunday school teachers, or classroom teachers in public education and Christian schools used them\u2014to open the eggs or have kids discover what was in the egg\u2014all 12 of them\u2014to ultimately explain\u2014back to what the question you are asking in your book\u2014\u201cWhat is Easter all about?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s just a brilliantly simple idea of walking through a pack of eggs to tell the story. It\u2019s a little bit like an Advent calendar, where you can tell the story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014through little windows. She <em>loves<\/em> Easter baskets and making very elaborate Easter baskets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How do you connect your kids to the real purpose of Easter, then?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Well, my oldest is married now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But when they were growing up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of our listeners have got toddlers\/young children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>You know what?\u00a0 My wife\u2019s mother gave us a set of Resurrection Eggs, and we used those when my kids were young. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>So, you helped me pass that on to my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you do it differently today, I mean, given where you are in kind of this renaissance around Easter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>See, I love telling stories. I have used some of my own stories. I mean, <em>An Easter Carol<\/em> is\u2014the big one was the first <em>VeggieTales<\/em> episode, where I ever found the opportunity to tell the story of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s the only one where Jesus shows up because my mother made the rule, in the very beginning, \u201cYou will not portray Jesus as a vegetable,\u201d because she was my content advisor, having a doctorate in children\u2019s ministry. She said, \u201cNo, vegetable Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, well, how do I ever tell the story of Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we got to <em>An Easter Carol<\/em>. I realized I could do it in a church, through the stained glass windows. We could have human forms in the stained glass windows and, then, tell the story there. We had a tradition where we would watch that story, every Easter, because I\u2019m better at teaching things that way, through film, than by standing up in front at a chalkboard and trying to do it that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have developed a lot of new characters in the last five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>[In character] \u201cOh, yes! I have numerous new characters, Bob Lepine.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Buck Denver shows up in the Easter book; doesn\u2019t he?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, the Easter book is starring Buck Denver and his friends: [In character] \u201cI\u2019m Buck Denver. If you are sitting down with a mom or a dad today and they said: \u201cYou know, here is what happens to us\u2014Easter sneaks up on us. We kind of forget it\u2019s even coming until: \u2018Oh, this is Palm Sunday. I guess next Sunday is Easter. We should go buy some new shoes for the kids.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of the way it works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs there a way that moms and dads can be a little more proactive on this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes, you can look for things that churches are doing because the completely secularized Easter is a one-day affair. The church Easter, actually, starts several weeks in advance; and you\u2019ve got the whole Holy Week of stuff to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a church that had kind of thrown away the church calendar, like many evangelical churches. We kind of had cut it back down to just: \u201cWe\u2019re going to wave around some palm fronds one Sunday and, then, have eggs the next Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m seeing more and more churches, including my own, go back to: \u201cWhat are the stations of the Cross?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we do something?\u201d\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve done all family events, where we\u2019ll set up the Stations of the Cross in our church, even though it\u2019s not from our tradition; but we\u2019re bringing it back from the historical church. And then, take our kids\u2014a family event\u2014where you walk your kids through the Stations of the Cross to see what Jesus did that last week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, it\u2019s the story: \u201cJesus is alive!\u00a0 He\u2019s risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s the end of the story! You can\u2019t start with end of the story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u2014or it doesn\u2019t make any sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think this holiday is a great opportunity for those of us who have faith to begin to become intentional and take a look at some of these various ways we can teach about Easter\u2014like your book\u2014read that aloud \/ talk about new life out of death. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take kids into that experience\u2014talk about that\u2014but, also, go a little deeper and begin to equip our kids around apologetics \/ around the proof for the resurrection. Josh McDowell has got some great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>And Lee Strobel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014have got some great books to help parents pass on the reality of: \u201cThe tomb is empty. You\u2019re not going to find the body because the body isn\u2019t here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHe is risen. He\u2019s risen, indeed!\u201d\u00a0 He is in heaven; and therefore, <em>we<\/em> have hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and the book you\u2019ve written\u2014the target age group for that?\u00a0 Is that for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>It is younger kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s preschool up to early elementary. What I am trying to get across is\u2014these holidays, Christmas and Easter, have all these symbols that we don\u2019t necessarily see a connection back to Jesus\u2014whether it is Santa Claus and Christmas trees or whether it\u2019s the Easter bunny and eggs. Because we don\u2019t see the connection, we get uncomfortable with the symbols, and we kind of want to throw them away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, we do\u2014that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>Then, we can strip the holidays of the kind of symbols that are easy for kids to grasp. Rather than doing that, I am trying to say, \u201cLet\u2019s unpack Santa Claus, and go all the way back to Saint Nicholas and talk about a man who <em>loved <\/em>Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, <em>now<\/em>, you can still have the symbol, and it <em>means<\/em> something to kids because you connect it back to Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for Easter: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about bunnies. Let\u2019s talk about eggs. Let\u2019s talk about <em>new life<\/em>. Let\u2019s talk about Jesus\u2019 promise: \u2018I have come to give you life that you may have it abundantly.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when you are eating the marshmallow Peep, [Laughter] you can think, \u201cI <em>know<\/em> what this is about\u2014it\u2019s about new life!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cI just ate new life!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI just ate a truckload!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil: <\/strong>\u201cI know why I feel sick,\u201d then.
