Steven Curtis Chapman and Mary Beth, his wife, join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Love you guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we were thrilled to have you guys on. Last night, Steven, you did a concert, here, onboard the cruise. It brought back memories because\u2014Dennis, I don\u2019t know if you know this\u2014the first time I ever met Steven and Mary Beth Chapman was the summer of 1986. 1986 was year one for you\u2014right?\u2014in the Christian music business?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>That\u2019s the year Emily was born as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The year Emily was born. I think you were pregnant with Emily when we met\u2014because I was managing a radio station, we did a concert at the local water park. We needed cheap bargain entertainment\u2014we did. So, we got\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>I was about as bargain as you could get at that point; wasn\u2019t I?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We got the new kid\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who was a new recording artist for Sparrow Records. We were able to get him for a deal; right?\u00a0 You guys pulled up in the Pinto\u2014with your records in the back of the Pinto\u2014and Mary Beth handling the merchandise over at the tables and you playing out at the water park while every body\u2019s riding the waves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think that\u2019s where the song <em>Dive<\/em> was born\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014wasn\u2019t it?\u2014right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>It might have been. Very well could have been. [Laughter]\u00a0 The seed was planted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you really have a Pinto?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Absolutely; it was hers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Actually, funny story\u2014because last night, he told, in concert, that, when we got married, we had $50 to our name and a green Ford Pinto. That Pinto was not completely paid off. I was a waitress at a Friendly\u2019s ice creams. I don\u2019t know if anybody has heard of Friendly\u2019s. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Oh, we\u2019ve got some Friendly\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>So, I used to pay for that car\u2014I\u2019d give my dad a roll of quarters every week. [Laughter] That\u2019s how I was paying that car off\u2014a roll of quarters. I would probably still be giving him a roll of quarters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>That was a token payment; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>But he forgave the debt when I got married. So, we really did have $50 and a green Ford Pinto. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Steven, you also shared\u2014last night, in the concert, with your wife\u2019s permission\u2014you referenced what Mary Beth\u2014you\u2019ve written about your [Mary Beth\u2019s] battle with depression, which, as you said last night, is a chronic battle. This is not something that\u2019s just a part of the past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a part of the ongoing struggle of life for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Share with our listeners how that manifested itself\u2014how it began to manifest itself in your marriage and what it\u2019s like today for you. Can you do that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Sure. I think early on, at the beginning\u2014Steven was right at the point of\u2014it was around 1991\u2014<em>The Great Adventure<\/em> was just coming out. I don\u2019t know if you remember this, but that was back in the day when there were <em>massive<\/em> tours. I mean, we were still so young; and we didn\u2019t know what was going on. Will Franklin was just born\u2014he was born in February of \u201991 \u2014and he\u2019s [Curtis\u2019] getting ready to put this show together. I mean, it was back in the day when he was going to Texas, and they had Reunion Arena for like five days of rehearsal. I mean, this stuff is not even heard of anymore; and they were going down there to rehearse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d just had Will \/ we had just moved into a different home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for anybody that has followed us\u2014our journey\u2014it\u2019s holy wedlock and holy headlock\u2014all mixed together. [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s what our pastor, who has done much counseling with us over the years, kind of dubbed it\u2014and dubbed him Tigger, and I\u2019m Eeyore. Looking back, I had struggled, all along\u2014didn\u2019t really realize or know how to put a finger on it. Not many people were talking about depression back then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut right after Will Franklin was born, I had a gallbladder attack. I had it the night\u2014well, I hadn\u2019t been feeling well for a long time. I had it the night he got on a bus to go to Texas to be Steven Curtis Chapman\u2014big concert in Texas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mr. Big Shot\u2014Mr. Steven Curtis Chapman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Well, if you\u2019ll remember the song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Saddling up his horse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>\u2014<em>I Will Be Here<\/em> was on that record, and he was <em>there<\/em>. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Honestly, I remember I was working at a local Christian radio station. We heard: \u201cThis tour may get canceled. Steven\u2019s having to decide whether he\u2019s going to go out on tour.\u201d\u00a0 And here\u2019s what you have to know\u2014there are contracts that are written,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Oh, there\u2019s a lot. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and there are record companies that have got this, and there is all of this. There are people\u2019s lives and livelihoods that are dependent on this. Back home, there\u2019s a wife who is going, \u201cI need my husband.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And here is a guy, in the middle, who is having to go, \u201cWhat do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>And all of this as I was the ripe old age of 26\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>\u2014three children, at that point. I <em>really <\/em>wanted him to go, and I <em>really<\/em> was trying to be behind him and support him; but obviously, didn\u2019t know I was going to have this gallbladder thing come up. My mom was in town helping because Will Franklin was brand-new, Caleb was 15 months old, and Emily was, I guess, four-and-a-half at the time. So, she came to help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think, looking back, the enemy knew what was getting ready to happen. I think he knew that there was going to be this longevity of a career\u2014not because of the talent\/not because of the songs\u2014you are talented and you have great songs\u2014but because of what God was going to accomplish through him. There was just this full onslaught attack. It was really the first time that I just kind of imploded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough that, we\u2019ve always been committed to finish the race together. We\u2019ve\u2014I tell people, all the time\u2014that we\u2019ve built wings onto counselors\u2019 offices in Nashville and the surrounding United States. I\u2019ve been on all kinds of journeys to work through grief, and to work through depression, and to work through all this stuff; but that\u2019s when I really began to become something that I had to recognize\u2014as well as Steve, then, had to recognize with me\u2014and then kind of get a good game plan, as far as that goes, to help me begin to deal with it the best way that we knew how and with the right help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it continues to this day. It\u2019s been manageable and kind of getting all of that balanced out\u2014continuing to work on the marriage when he\u2019s gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he was <em>always<\/em>\u2014still is\u2014committed to each tour: \u201cWhat does it look like?\u00a0 What are the ages of the kids?\u00a0 Is it better that I\u2019m gone two weeks \/ come home two weeks?\u00a0 Is it better that I get home on Wednesday \/ come back on Sunday?\u00a0 Is it better that I just do weekends?\u201d\u00a0 Every tour\u2014he slaved over how to do it and still be involved with kids. It\u2019s not for the faint of heart\u2014it is very, very hard\u2014and it continues today. About the time you get a good handle on it, something else happens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 2008\u2014when Maria passed away\u2014and it was traumatic, and a tragedy, and it involved another child of ours\u2014it rears its ugly head again\u2014so, we\u2019re just really kind of committed to take it a day at a time. We\u2019re very honest, obviously\u2014and with my own children too\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and they know the journey that I\u2019m on; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, as a husband, Steven\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014tell us about what it\u2019s been like for you on this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, you know, initially, we battled so much with the guilt. I, as a husband, heard, early on\u2014very respected, godly author\/counselor say, \u201cYou are, as a husband, responsible for the emotional well-being of your wife.\u201d\u00a0 I would have many counselors and many others say, afterwards, that was a little heavy to lay on a husband and not really completely true. But I took that on and really felt this incredible burden of \u201cHow do I fix this?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m a guy\u2014guys are fixers: \u201cHow do we fix this?\u00a0 I need to pray harder. I need to fast and pray more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our early marriage, too, I don\u2019t want to misrepresent it that I was always doing it right either. There were early days of our marriage that I would say and imply things that made her feel, spiritually, like: \u201cI\u2019m just not enough. I\u2019m not spiritual enough to be the wife of Steven Curtis Chapman, and all that that entails, or what people would expect for me to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>So, I knew that that was part of the weight that she was carrying. And then, just trying to be aware of the ways that I would even, unknowingly, add weight onto that expectation of \u201cWhat does it look like to be the spiritual woman\/wife?\u201d that you should feel responsible to be. I think, as this began to come to the surface\u2014and it was tied in with wounds from past and hard things that began to come to the surface that were all woven into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart was really broken for my wife because there is not a harder working, more brave\/courageous woman on the planet. I\u2019d see her just: \u201cI\u2019m just going to fight through this, and I just need to pray harder. I just need to have more faith,\u201d and see that weight that she carried, and to pray with her, and really have to come to a place of really, not just in theory, but believing that, in our weakness, His strength is made perfect and that we will boast in our weaknesses and not try to hide them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe do that so much in the church if we don\u2019t have the appearance of what everyone might expect us to be and how together we need to have it. Most of the stories that you would read\u2014we\u2019d look for stories \/ she would look\u2014and you would read these stories of: \u201cWell, I struggled\u201d\u2014with a \u201cD\u201d on the end\u2014\u201cwith this.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was always that victory in place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was such a heavy thing for her to carry\u2014to think: \u201cWell, I don\u2019t have that victory. How do we get that?\u00a0 How do we fix this?\u00a0 How do we\u2014who do we talk to?\u00a0 What counselor?\u00a0 Where do we go?\u00a0 What do we do?\u201d\u00a0 And then, just to begin to recognize and realize, on our journey together, that this was going to be something that God would continue to use to keep us broken, and humble, and desperate for Him \/ trusting Him that He does know the plans He has for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s been so much of our journey. I can\u2019t say enough just about how proud and grateful I am of her courage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe songs\u2014as people know what our journey has been\u2014people often say, \u201cMan, where do those songs come from?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking: \u201cBoy, you have no idea where these are coming from\u2014the depth of the pain and the heartache, and the struggle, and trusting God and then not trusting Him, and trusting Him again and dropping anchor\u2014like I talked about last night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014in His promises for my wife and us together\u2014and fighting through it, and fighting against each other sometimes through it, and then fighting together.\u201d\u00a0 I know part of what God has used to minister out of our lives\/our journey\u2014it\u2019s been the depth of that pain that these songs and so much of what we\u2019ve been able to share and encourage people with over the years has come from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, there\u2019s something that comes with the mantle that has been given this couple\u2014that most of us can never begin to fathom and realize the weight of what it\u2019s like to be looked up to on the pedestal where people put you\u2014but to still have a heavy weight to carry. Some of the greatest, most powerful things that we have to say come out of our deepest anguish and our hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you wish it could come some other way; you know?\u00a0 Don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Steven: <\/strong>Absolutely. You\u2019re going to have to fight this battle for us against the enemy\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s through the loss of our daughter \/ the attack that that was on so many levels or just our journey together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI immediately said: \u201cWell, absolutely. It brought back memories because\u2014Dennis, I don\u2019t know if you know this\u2014the first time I ever met Steven and Mary Beth Chapman was the summer of 1986. 1986 was year one for you\u2014right?\u2014in the Christian music business?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>That\u2019s the year Emily was born as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The year Emily was born. I think you were pregnant with Emily when we met\u2014because I was managing a radio station, we did a concert at the local water park. We needed cheap bargain entertainment\u2014we did. So, we got\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>I was about as bargain as you could get at that point; wasn\u2019t I?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We got the new kid\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who was a new recording artist for Sparrow Records. We were able to get him for a deal; right?\u00a0 You guys pulled up in the Pinto\u2014with your records in the back of the Pinto\u2014and Mary Beth handling the merchandise over at the tables and you playing out at the water park while every body\u2019s riding the waves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. That Pinto was not completely paid off. I was a waitress at a Friendly\u2019s ice creams. I don\u2019t know if anybody has heard of Friendly\u2019s. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Oh, we\u2019ve got some Friendly\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>So, I used to pay for that car\u2014I\u2019d give my dad a roll of quarters every week. [Laughter] That\u2019s how I was paying that car off\u2014a roll of quarters. I would probably still be giving him a roll of quarters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>That was a token payment; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>But he forgave the debt when I got married. So, we really did have $50 and a green Ford Pinto. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Steven, you also shared\u2014last night, in the concert, with your wife\u2019s permission\u2014you referenced what Mary Beth\u2014you\u2019ve written about your [Mary Beth\u2019s] battle with depression, which, as you said last night, is a chronic battle. This is not something that\u2019s just a part of the past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a part of the ongoing struggle of life for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Share with our listeners how that manifested itself\u2014how it began to manifest itself in your marriage and what it\u2019s like today for you. Can you do that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Sure. I think early on, at the beginning\u2014Steven was right at the point of\u2014it was around 1991\u2014<em>The Great Adventure<\/em> was just coming out. I don\u2019t know if you remember this, but that was back in the day when there were <em>massive<\/em> tours. I mean, we were still so young; and we didn\u2019t know what was going on. Will Franklin was just born\u2014he was born in February of \u201991 \u2014and he\u2019s [Curtis\u2019] getting ready to put this show together. I mean, it was back in the day when he was going to Texas, and they had Reunion Arena for like five days of rehearsal. I mean, this stuff is not even heard of anymore; and they were going down there to rehearse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d just had Will \/ we had just moved into a different home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for anybody that has followed us\u2014our journey\u2014it\u2019s holy wedlock and holy headlock\u2014all mixed together. [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s what our pastor, who has done much counseling with us over the years, kind of dubbed it\u2014and dubbed him Tigger, and I\u2019m Eeyore. Looking back, I had struggled, all along\u2014didn\u2019t really realize or know how to put a finger on it. Not many people were talking about depression back then. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut right after Will Franklin was born, I had a gallbladder attack. I had it the night\u2014well, I hadn\u2019t been feeling well for a long time. I had it the night he got on a bus to go to Texas to be Steven Curtis Chapman\u2014big concert in Texas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mr. Big Shot\u2014Mr. Steven Curtis Chapman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Well, if you\u2019ll remember the song\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Saddling up his horse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>\u2014<em>I Will Be Here<\/em> was on that record, and he was <em>there<\/em>. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Honestly, I remember I was working at a local Christian radio station. We heard: \u201cThis tour may get canceled. Steven\u2019s having to decide whether he\u2019s going to go out on tour.\u201d\u00a0 And here\u2019s what you have to know\u2014there are contracts that are written,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Oh, there\u2019s a lot. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and there are record companies that have got this, and there is all of this. There are people\u2019s lives and livelihoods that are dependent on this. Back home, there\u2019s a wife who is going, \u201cI need my husband.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And here is a guy, in the middle, who is having to go, \u201cWhat do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>And all of this as I was the ripe old age of 26\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth: <\/strong>\u2014three children, at that point. I <em>really <\/em>wanted him to go, and I <em>really<\/em> was trying to be behind him and support him; but obviously, didn\u2019t know I was going to have this gallbladder thing come up. My mom was in town helping because Will Franklin was brand-new, Caleb was 15 months old, and Emily was, I guess, four-and-a-half at the time. So, she came to help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I think, looking back, the enemy knew what was getting ready to happen. I think he knew that there was going to be this longevity of a career\u2014not because of the talent\/not because of the songs\u2014you are talented and you have great songs\u2014but because of what God was going to accomplish through him. There was just this full onslaught attack. It was really the first time that I just kind of imploded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough that, we\u2019ve always been committed to finish the race together. We\u2019ve\u2014I tell people, all the time\u2014that we\u2019ve built wings onto counselors\u2019 offices in Nashville and the surrounding United States. I\u2019ve been on all kinds of journeys to work through grief, and to work through depression, and to work through all this stuff; but that\u2019s when I really began to become something that I had to recognize\u2014as well as Steve, then, had to recognize with me\u2014and then kind of get a good game plan, as far as that goes, to help me begin to deal with it the best way that we knew how and with the right help. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it continues to this day. It\u2019s been manageable and kind of getting all of that balanced out\u2014continuing to work on the marriage when he\u2019s gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he was <em>always<\/em>\u2014still is\u2014committed to each tour: \u201cWhat does it look like?\u00a0 What are the ages of the kids?\u00a0 Is it better that I\u2019m gone two weeks \/ come home two weeks?\u00a0 Is it better that I get home on Wednesday \/ come back on Sunday?\u00a0 Is it better that I just do weekends?\u201d\u00a0 Every tour\u2014he slaved over how to do it and still be involved with kids. It\u2019s not for the faint of heart\u2014it is very, very hard\u2014and it continues today. About the time you get a good handle on it, something else happens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 2008\u2014when Maria passed away\u2014and it was traumatic, and a tragedy, and it involved another child of ours\u2014it rears its ugly head again\u2014so, we\u2019re just really kind of committed to take it a day at a time. We\u2019re very honest, obviously\u2014and with my own children too\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and they know the journey that I\u2019m on; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, as a husband, Steven\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014tell us about what it\u2019s been like for you on this journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, you know, initially, we battled so much with the guilt. I, as a husband, heard, early on\u2014very respected, godly author\/counselor say, \u201cYou are, as a husband, responsible for the emotional well-being of your wife.\u201d\u00a0 I would have many counselors and many others say, afterwards, that was a little heavy to lay on a husband and not really completely true. But I took that on and really felt this incredible burden of \u201cHow do I fix this?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m a guy\u2014guys are fixers: \u201cHow do we fix this?\u00a0 I need to pray harder. I need to fast and pray more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our early marriage, too, I don\u2019t want to misrepresent it that I was always doing it right either. There were early days of our marriage that I would say and imply things that made her feel, spiritually, like: \u201cI\u2019m just not enough. I\u2019m not spiritual enough to be the wife of Steven Curtis Chapman, and all that that entails, or what people would expect for me to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>So, I knew that that was part of the weight that she was carrying. And then, just trying to be aware of the ways that I would even, unknowingly, add weight onto that expectation of \u201cWhat does it look like to be the spiritual woman\/wife?\u201d that you should feel responsible to be. I think, as this began to come to the surface\u2014and it was tied in with wounds from past and hard things that began to come to the surface that were all woven into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart was really broken for my wife because there is not a harder working, more brave\/courageous woman on the planet. I\u2019d see her just: \u201cI\u2019m just going to fight through this, and I just need to pray harder. I just need to have more faith,\u201d and see that weight that she carried, and to pray with her, and really have to come to a place of really, not just in theory, but believing that, in our weakness, His strength is made perfect and that we will boast in our weaknesses and not try to hide them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe do that so much in the church if we don\u2019t have the appearance of what everyone might expect us to be and how together we need to have it. Most of the stories that you would read\u2014we\u2019d look for stories \/ she would look\u2014and you would read these stories of: \u201cWell, I struggled\u201d\u2014with a \u201cD\u201d on the end\u2014\u201cwith this.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was always that victory in place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was such a heavy thing for her to carry\u2014to think: \u201cWell, I don\u2019t have that victory. How do we get that?\u00a0 How do we fix this?\u00a0 How do we\u2014who do we talk to?\u00a0 What counselor?\u00a0 Where do we go?\u00a0 What do we do?\u201d\u00a0 And then, just to begin to recognize and realize, on our journey together, that this was going to be something that God would continue to use to keep us broken, and humble, and desperate for Him \/ trusting Him that He does know the plans He has for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s been so much of our journey. I can\u2019t say enough just about how proud and grateful I am of her courage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe songs\u2014as people know what our journey has been\u2014people often say, \u201cMan, where do those songs come from?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking: \u201cBoy, you have no idea where these are coming from\u2014the depth of the pain and the heartache, and the struggle, and trusting God and then not trusting Him, and trusting Him again and dropping anchor\u2014like I talked about last night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014in His promises for my wife and us together\u2014and fighting through it, and fighting against each other sometimes through it, and then fighting together.\u201d\u00a0 I know part of what God has used to minister out of our lives\/our journey\u2014it\u2019s been the depth of that pain that these songs and so much of what we\u2019ve been able to share and encourage people with over the years has come from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, there\u2019s something that comes with the mantle that has been given this couple\u2014that most of us can never begin to fathom and realize the weight of what it\u2019s like to be looked up to on the pedestal where people put you\u2014but to still have a heavy weight to carry. Some of the greatest, most powerful things that we have to say come out of our deepest anguish and our hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you wish it could come some other way; you know?\u00a0 Don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Steven: <\/strong>Absolutely. But they were talking to you about something we didn\u2019t get to see in the movie yet because it hasn\u2019t been added,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Right. So, no surprise\u2014that prayer battle \/ battles in prayer have been a big, big part of our journey over the last 30 years of our marriage\u2014so many places we\u2019ve said: \u201cGod, You\u2019re going to have to do this. You\u2019re going to have to fight this battle for us against the enemy\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s through the loss of our daughter \/ the attack that that was on so many levels or just our journey together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI immediately said: \u201cWell, absolutely.
