Thanks for joining us. You know, I remember reading a business book a couple of years ago. One of the key ideas of this book was: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to see if you\u2019ve got the right people on the right seat on the bus,\u201d\u2014you remember that phrase coming up in a business book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I guess what we\u2019re hearing, this week, is that there are a lot of people, who are on the bus, who\u2014it\u2019s time for a shuffle for some of them; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, they need to make sure they\u2019ve located the right seat and also maybe determine if they\u2019re on the right bus or not. They may have a ticket heading in the wrong direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBill Hendricks joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Bill\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Dennis\/Bob\u2014it\u2019s good to be with you again. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just want our listeners to know\u2014Bill knows what he\u2019s talking about. He is the President of The Giftedness Center, which is a Dallas-based consulting firm that helps organizations, businesses, and individuals find out how to be effective. A part of that is helping them find their giftedness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re talking about a book called <em>The Person Called You. <\/em>As we start out the broadcast, Bob, I want to read a verse here, in just a second, that I\u2019ve been reading all week. We appreciate you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mentioned I want to read a verse that has to do with what we\u2019re talking about here, which is finding out how God gifted you and being used up by Him for His purposes. It is Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014this is from The Message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019ve not read verses from The Message recently, Eugene Peterson takes some liberty in kind of explaining the text.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, a little poetry here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is a good rendition. He said: [God] creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re about; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> It\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re about helping people find out how God made them\u2014what they\u2019re good at \/ plugging in\u2014whether it be in their work or volunteering, perhaps; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Absolutely! Your giftedness can be used in every area of your life. That verse talks about the good work that God has prepared for each one of us. I find that a lot of people\u2014if their life is given to Christ\u2014they sincerely want to do the thing that God designed them to do. The problem is\u2014they don\u2019t know what their workmanship is \/ they don\u2019t know what the good works are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese aren\u2019t just generic good works\u2014these are specific good works, tied to the nature of the workmanship. If you figure out what the workmanship is, you now know what the good works are about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, Bill, as we\u2019ve talked about this, I\u2019ve been thinking about jobs like a pipefitter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know what a pipefitter does; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He fits pipe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; right! [Laughter] I\u2019ve been thinking about a guy, who is a janitor\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014or somebody who\u2014they just have a job\u2014that they would say, \u201cIt\u2019s my job,\u201d you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> There are a lot of people who say, \u201cIt\u2019s just my job\u201d; but there are people, who are gifted at the task of pipe-fitting\u2014I\u2019ve seen them at work\u2014I mean, they\u2019re efficient \/ they love what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They take pride in what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They take pride in the workmanship. They\u2019re good with their hands \/ they love to serve people\u2014that\u2019s a good fit for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve met janitors\u2014for whom that was a perfect fit\u2014because they loved taking responsibility to keep a place in good working condition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really matter whether you\u2019re a lawyer or a coalminer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Oh, listen! Years ago, somebody wrote a wonderful book, with the title, <em>Who Moved the Price Tags? <\/em>The point of the book is that we have reassigned all the values in our culture. You know, we pay people that are doing <em>incredible<\/em> work that affects the next generation and has all kinds of implications for what goes on in this world\u2014and we pay them a pittance. And then, we have people that are doing stuff that, at the end of the day\u2014it may be entertaining\u2014but it doesn\u2019t really amount to just a whole lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And yet they get paid, as they say, \u201clike a rock star.\u201d We\u2019ve got all our values messed up. As a result, we tend to assign value to different occupations. God doesn\u2019t look at it that way. God sees that every kind of work is valuable and needs to be done. To that end, He\u2019s created somebody out there who\u2019s gifted at the task of doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a thing we have really skirted around but really haven\u2019t talked much about\u2014it\u2019s calling. I recruited a guy out of a major industry, a number of years ago, to come here, to FamilyLife, and to give leadership here. We had just taken a job satisfaction survey, here at FamilyLife, among all of our staff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at the numbers for FamilyLife staff; and he goes: \u201cWe would kill, in industry, for these numbers! These people are <em>motivated<\/em> out of their minds! Your scores are the highest I have ever seen in terms of people who\u2014maybe they aren\u2019t in the perfect job for them and all that\u2014but they have a sense of being where they are on purpose for God has called them there. They\u2019ve walked away from money \/ they\u2019ve walked away from security. They have decided to move forward to make a difference because of what\u2019s happening in our country.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would you say about this whole issue of calling, Bill?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, I think that you\u2019ve gotten people that felt called to it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s a good thing. Part of the reason you\u2019ve done that is you\u2019ve set up a venture that (a) has a well-defined purpose\u2014that\u2019s bigger than any person\u2014so, \u201cI\u2019m getting to participate in something that\u2019s bigger than just me.\u201d In your case, it has the added benefit of, not only affecting lives for now, which is important, but also affecting them for eternity, which is also important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, \u201ccalling\u201d is a theological term that\u2019s been kicked around for so long we\u2019ve almost lost sight of what it means. I\u2019m afraid people, like me, who\u2019ve had theological training, we managed to complicate it <em>all out of proportion<\/em>\u2014so it\u2019s a bit of a mystery for people. At the end of the day, calling starts with God\u2019s voice. God <em>calls<\/em> somebody into existence\u2014just, as in Genesis 1, He <em>called<\/em> the worlds into existence. Well, He calls people into existence\u2014when He calls them into existence, that\u2019s a very specific name that He puts on that person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember, God is eternal, which means, whatever His thought about you is, that thought is eternal. I don\u2019t want to get too deep here; but in eternity\u2014where God dwells\u2014in His mind, there\u2019s a person that He thinks of when He thinks of you. That means He always thinks of you. All of the thoughts of God are perfect\u2014all of the thoughts of God, He delights in. He can\u2019t have a thought that He doesn\u2019t delight in, which means that His thought of you is something He delights in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, as I said, in time and space, He <em>calls<\/em> you into existence. He puts you into the world with a body that connects you to the world and with gifts that allow you to add value to this world and make it more fruitful. So, just by virtue of putting you here and calling you into existence, God has put a call on your life. He\u2019s got you here for a purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven people who haven\u2019t yet come to faith in Christ are still put here for a purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was God\u2019s intent for them. He had something for them to do. The reason they really need to come to faith in Christ is so that they can have their eyes opened to pursue that with intentionality, under the Lordship of Christ and to His glory, empowered by His Spirit to accomplish His purposes. And not, as commonly happens, people just kind of live their life with their gifting\u2014they\u2019re not bad people \/ they\u2019re fallen people\u2014they need a Savior. They feed their families but, at the end of the day, it\u2019s pretty much about them and their personal comfort, convenience, and satisfaction. That calling just kind of goes by the wayside. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has called people into existence. The calling has to do with how He\u2019s put them together, which should live itself out in terms of what they actually <em>do<\/em> in their day-to-day life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Back to that verse I read earlier\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cWe are His workmanship,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in Ephesians 2:10. That word means: \u201cWe are God\u2019s work of art.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has pulled out a paint brush, and He has created a painting that\u2019s intended to live out a story that honors Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That should occur in our lives\u2014as men and women, husbands and wives, moms and dads. We should help our children recognize that workmanship too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, let me plus that\u2014not only are we a beautiful piece of art, which has beauty to it\u2014but it also has functionality to it. You know, if you go back to the original context\u2014here in Ephesians\u2014Ephesus was a first century city in Greece. Imagine an artisan in Greece\u2014in Ephesus\u2014who\u2019s working in pottery. He\u2019s fashioning this piece of pottery\u2014because it is God\u2019s hands that are on the pottery, it\u2019s a masterpiece.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, if the potter fashions that piece of clay one way, it\u2019s perfect for holding wine or water. If he fashions it yet another way, it\u2019s perfect for holding bread or grain. If he fashions it yet another way, it\u2019s perfect for putting oil in and a wick, and burning it as a lantern. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, the artist gives that vessel design features which gives it functionality\u2014which has the idea of purpose to it. So, not only is this thing beautiful, it also is purposeful\u2014there\u2019s a reason why it was put together\u2014it\u2019s got a use to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why the verse goes on to say that we\u2019re created in Christ Jesus <em>for <\/em>good works\u2014not just generic good works like helping little old ladies across the street and feeding the homeless\u2014those are good works \/ they need to be done\u2014but, in light of that word, \u201cworkmanship,\u201d those are specific good works tied to the nature of the workmanship\u2014which means: \u201cIf you figure out your workmanship, you figure out the nature of the good works that have your name on them. You\u2019ve thereby figured out, \u2018What am I called to do?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my case, let me just speak for me\u2014if you were to look in my motivational pattern, you would see God\u2019s given me some facility with words and the ability to write. You know, Paul said, \u201cWoe is me if I do not preach the gospel.\u201d I feel like \u201cWoe is me if I do not write.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s a sense of calling. I need to take the thoughts, and experiences, and stories that God has given to me and, in some way, shape or form\u2014find a way to put those into writing because, somehow, He wants to benefit other people through me doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, you talk about writing\u2014I\u2019m thinking about John Grisham\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the lawyer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but he\u2019d go home at night, after working in the law office, and he started writing novels.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tom Clancy was an insurance salesman who went home at night and worked on spy thrillers; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Both of them found they really were better at\u2014or liked\u2014writing better than what they were originally doing. What about the person who says: \u201cOkay, I do my job. It\u2019s kind of the way I support my habit. My habit is what I do at night and on weekends\u2014that\u2019s really where my passion is. My job\u2019s just what I\u2019ve got to do so I can pay the bills so I can do what I\u2019m really called to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> I call that waiting tables. Waiting tables is a very noble occupation; but as we all know, there are many artisans and creative types who have to wait tables in order to, as you say, support their habit. I guess I want to put a little nobler vision on that task. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not be in a position where you can get paid to do this thing that\u2019s in you\u2014like an actor, or a musician, or a novelist, or something like that\u2014again, because of the values in our culture. Whatever you do, don\u2019t say, \u201cWell, because I can\u2019t make a living at it, I guess I shouldn\u2019t do it at all.\u201d Do it avocationally\u2014it\u2019s <em>imperative<\/em> for you to do that. If you do it and you apply yourself to it, you absolutely don\u2019t know when that so-called break will come through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually challenge people by saying: \u201cYou\u2019re running around telling everybody you\u2019re an accountant. You don\u2019t really like accounting but it\u2019s a way to pay the bills because what you really love to do is watercolors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGreat! The next time somebody asks you, \u2018What do you do?\u2019 say, \u2018I\u2019m an artist.\u2019 You say, \u2018But Bill, I can\u2019t say I\u2019m an artist!\u2019 I say, \u2018Well, do you do art?\u2019 \u2018Yes.\u2019 Have people responded to that art? \u2018Yes.\u2019 Have you ever sold any of that art? \u2018Oh, yes. I had one little thing that sold in a craft show\u2019 or whatever. That\u2019s in your soul\u2014that\u2019s your gift! Accounting is your form of waiting tables while you\u2019re developing your art and hoping that life cooperates, and something good happens, and, next thing you know, you\u2019re\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a friend who says he worked 25 years to be an overnight success. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And I want to encourage a lot of our listeners who are\u2014particularly Boomers\u2014and they are like: \u201cBill, you don\u2019t understand. I\u2019ve got three kids in college. I\u2019ve got to do whatever I can to bring money in the door.\u201d I say, \u201cI understand that, but you\u2019re not going to have those kids to be responsible for forever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s say your youngest is in eighth grade. That means you\u2019ve got another\u2014what?\u2014nine more years, roughly, that I believe you should take some responsibility to make sure that they\u2019re provided for. Well, that\u2019s a wonderful runway\u2014a nine-year runway\u2014for you to start to dream about: \u201cIf I really figure out what my gifting is\u2014I think I have a clue\u2014but maybe confirm that and let me lean into that. Let me start to do some things on the side that fit that and that really give me energy. Let me begin to create a vision for my life, for nine years out. What could it look like if I trust that and I think, \u2018Okay, when my options open up, how can I really start to lean into that?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat will give you hope to get through those nine years in a job that may not fit you very well; but more importantly, when you start to gain energy from doing this thing, even if it\u2019s at night and on the weekends, that energy gets translated back to give you the energy you need to do work that doesn\u2019t really fit you\u2014because that\u2019s draining.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can give you a great illustration of this. Barbara was, for a number of years\u2014I think it was 29 years\u2014a mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, she did not\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s still a mom\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s still a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019re just talking about not having kids in the home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. Job description-wise, she did it all. I mean, when they left to go establish their own homes, in essence, she got fired. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Her job, for the most part, went away. So, we took a planning retreat to evaluate how best to use her gifts and abilities in this next vocational assignment for her. It took about four or five years to figure that out. To your point, about how you have to kind of discover\u2014or, in her case, rediscover\u2014some latent gifts that had to be put on the shelf because raising kids would not allow it to occur.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe took her study of the Bible\u2014which she has been a student of the Bible for decades\u2014and her ability as an artist to create beautiful things around holidays for moms and dads \/ grandmas and grandpas to pass on truth, generationally, to their children and grandchildren. It\u2019s called Ever Thine Home. So, she\u2019s a great illustration of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question that I want you to answer\u2014that\u2019s this: \u201cIf we transported the three of us, right now, to a country in Africa, our discussion around satisfaction and giftedness in jobs might be nuanced just a bit differently. Do you think we\u2019re expecting too much today out of our work and out of our jobs, Bill, here in America?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Really, the question I think you\u2019re asking is: \u201cIs giftedness just a luxury?\u201d I get asked that all the time: \u201cBill, this is great if you have options; but if you don\u2019t have options, what good does your giftedness do?\u201d My answer is that giftedness is not a luxury\u2014giftedness is a <em>reality<\/em>\u2014it is the human condition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t change the fact that many parts of our world are impoverished, but neither can I change the fact that people have giftedness within them\u2014it\u2019s simply <em>there<\/em>. When I put it together with the fact that the reason it\u2019s there is God actually wants humans to create value, and that includes economic value, a light goes on in my head and I ask: \u201cWhat we\u2019re saying is that it\u2019s not for lack of giftedness that these people don\u2019t have the means that they have. Well then, what\u2019s the lack? The lack is opportunity.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure enough, today, people are discovering microfinance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They\u2019re discovering that you make a loan to a guy, who otherwise is sitting around, starving. He buys a bicycle. He can begin to transport bananas to market with that bicycle. Next thing you know, he\u2019s making money\u2014he pays back the loan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNext thing you know, his business is expanding so he hires some more people. This <em>whole <\/em>community benefits because his giftedness got unleashed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the book, I have an example of a community in South America, where the community is very poor people\u2014they basically live in a garbage dump. It\u2019s a terrible place to live \/ it\u2019s a terrible place to grow up. But somebody began to form and fashion musical instruments out of the scraps in the garbage dump. All the men got excited about crafting these things together. Then they formed an orchestra with the young people in the community. You listen to these kids play this music, and it brings tears to your eyes\u2014you see the joy\/the excitement. One little girl\u2014her reaction to the whole thing\u2014she says, \u201cI love the music because it makes me feel joy.\u201d Light, you see, is kind of shed on this little community that lives in a garbage dump because somebody unleashed the giftedness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one last assignment I\u2019ve got for you that I want to ask you before we conclude today\u2019s broadcast; but, first, Bob, tell them how to get a copy of the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The book is called <em>The Person Called You. <\/em>We\u2019ve got copies of the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. You, and your brother, and sister gave tributes to your dad. We\u2019ve featured them, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought, in preparation for this broadcast, I would give you the opportunity to give your mom a tribute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness\u2014yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She really enjoyed listening to your tribute to your dad. I\u2019d like to surprise her with a tribute. Could you give her a tribute?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said at the memorial service\u2014and it\u2019s absolutely true\u2014that I was the youngest of four, but the truth is I was mom\u2019s favorite. [Laughter] What I mean by that is she saw in me things that I did not see in myself. From a very young age, she nurtured me. We talk about sort of encouraging the giftedness\u2014Mom did that with me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother <em>never <\/em>shamed me for the energy that I would display. Now, look! I was a very rambunctious kid \/ I was the classic precocious kid. Worst of all, I was the classic mischievous kid. You know, people talk about coming to faith and they came out of a background of crime, and drugs, and all of this stuff. Well, I didn\u2019t grow up in that background; but, trust me, when, at four-and-a-half, I was confronted with the notion of sin, that made all the sense in the world to me\u2014I knew I was a sinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom believed in me. Despite whatever sins I had, she saw there was real potential in me\u2014she nurtured it \/ she encouraged it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, I want to say, \u201cThank you.\u201d I said it at the memorial service and I believe it even more so today\u2014when I was a child, growing up, you were there. You held me. You nurtured me. You read to me. You showed me right from wrong. One of the key ideas of this book was: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to see if you\u2019ve got the right people on the right seat on the bus,\u201d\u2014you remember that phrase coming up in a business book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I guess what we\u2019re hearing, this week, is that there are a lot of people, who are on the bus, who\u2014it\u2019s time for a shuffle for some of them; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, they need to make sure they\u2019ve located the right seat and also maybe determine if they\u2019re on the right bus or not. They may have a ticket heading in the wrong direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBill Hendricks joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Bill\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Dennis\/Bob\u2014it\u2019s good to be with you again. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just want our listeners to know\u2014Bill knows what he\u2019s talking about. He is the President of The Giftedness Center, which is a Dallas-based consulting firm that helps organizations, businesses, and individuals find out how to be effective. We appreciate you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mentioned I want to read a verse that has to do with what we\u2019re talking about here, which is finding out how God gifted you and being used up by Him for His purposes. It is Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014this is from The Message.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019ve not read verses from The Message recently, Eugene Peterson takes some liberty in kind of explaining the text.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, a little poetry here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is a good rendition. He said: [God] creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re about; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> It\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re about helping people find out how God made them\u2014what they\u2019re good at \/ plugging in\u2014whether it be in their work or volunteering, perhaps; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Absolutely! Your giftedness can be used in every area of your life. That verse talks about the good work that God has prepared for each one of us. I find that a lot of people\u2014if their life is given to Christ\u2014they sincerely want to do the thing that God designed them to do. The problem is\u2014they don\u2019t know what their workmanship is \/ they don\u2019t know what the good works are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese aren\u2019t just generic good works\u2014these are specific good works, tied to the nature of the workmanship. If you figure out what the workmanship is, you now know what the good works are about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, Bill, as we\u2019ve talked about this, I\u2019ve been thinking about jobs like a pipefitter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know what a pipefitter does; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He fits pipe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; right! [Laughter] I\u2019ve been thinking about a guy, who is a janitor\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014or somebody who\u2014they just have a job\u2014that they would say, \u201cIt\u2019s my job,\u201d you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> There are a lot of people who say, \u201cIt\u2019s just my job\u201d; but there are people, who are gifted at the task of pipe-fitting\u2014I\u2019ve seen them at work\u2014I mean, they\u2019re efficient \/ they love what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They take pride in what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They take pride in the workmanship. They\u2019re good with their hands \/ they love to serve people\u2014that\u2019s a good fit for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve met janitors\u2014for whom that was a perfect fit\u2014because they loved taking responsibility to keep a place in good working condition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really matter whether you\u2019re a lawyer or a coalminer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Oh, listen! Years ago, somebody wrote a wonderful book, with the title, <em>Who Moved the Price Tags? <\/em>The point of the book is that we have reassigned all the values in our culture. You know, we pay people that are doing <em>incredible<\/em> work that affects the next generation and has all kinds of implications for what goes on in this world\u2014and we pay them a pittance. And then, we have people that are doing stuff that, at the end of the day\u2014it may be entertaining\u2014but it doesn\u2019t really amount to just a whole lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And yet they get paid, as they say, \u201clike a rock star.\u201d We\u2019ve got all our values messed up. As a result, we tend to assign value to different occupations. God doesn\u2019t look at it that way. God sees that every kind of work is valuable and needs to be done. To that end, He\u2019s created somebody out there who\u2019s gifted at the task of doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a thing we have really skirted around but really haven\u2019t talked much about\u2014it\u2019s calling. I recruited a guy out of a major industry, a number of years ago, to come here, to FamilyLife, and to give leadership here. We had just taken a job satisfaction survey, here at FamilyLife, among all of our staff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked at the numbers for FamilyLife staff; and he goes: \u201cWe would kill, in industry, for these numbers! These people are <em>motivated<\/em> out of their minds! Your scores are the highest I have ever seen in terms of people who\u2014maybe they aren\u2019t in the perfect job for them and all that\u2014but they have a sense of being where they are on purpose for God has called them there. They\u2019ve walked away from money \/ they\u2019ve walked away from security. They have decided to move forward to make a difference because of what\u2019s happening in our country.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would you say about this whole issue of calling, Bill?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, I think that you\u2019ve gotten people that felt called to it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s a good thing. Part of the reason you\u2019ve done that is you\u2019ve set up a venture that (a) has a well-defined purpose\u2014that\u2019s bigger than any person\u2014so, \u201cI\u2019m getting to participate in something that\u2019s bigger than just me.\u201d In your case, it has the added benefit of, not only affecting lives for now, which is important, but also affecting them for eternity, which is also important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, \u201ccalling\u201d is a theological term that\u2019s been kicked around for so long we\u2019ve almost lost sight of what it means. I\u2019m afraid people, like me, who\u2019ve had theological training, we managed to complicate it <em>all out of proportion<\/em>\u2014so it\u2019s a bit of a mystery for people. At the end of the day, calling starts with God\u2019s voice. God <em>calls<\/em> somebody into existence\u2014just, as in Genesis 1, He <em>called<\/em> the worlds into existence. Well, He calls people into existence\u2014when He calls them into existence, that\u2019s a very specific name that He puts on that person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember, God is eternal, which means, whatever His thought about you is, that thought is eternal. I don\u2019t want to get too deep here; but in eternity\u2014where God dwells\u2014in His mind, there\u2019s a person that He thinks of when He thinks of you. That means He always thinks of you. All of the thoughts of God are perfect\u2014all of the thoughts of God, He delights in. He can\u2019t have a thought that He doesn\u2019t delight in, which means that His thought of you is something He delights in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, as I said, in time and space, He <em>calls<\/em> you into existence. He puts you into the world with a body that connects you to the world and with gifts that allow you to add value to this world and make it more fruitful. So, just by virtue of putting you here and calling you into existence, God has put a call on your life. He\u2019s got you here for a purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven people who haven\u2019t yet come to faith in Christ are still put here for a purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was God\u2019s intent for them. He had something for them to do. The reason they really need to come to faith in Christ is so that they can have their eyes opened to pursue that with intentionality, under the Lordship of Christ and to His glory, empowered by His Spirit to accomplish His purposes. And not, as commonly happens, people just kind of live their life with their gifting\u2014they\u2019re not bad people \/ they\u2019re fallen people\u2014they need a Savior. They feed their families but, at the end of the day, it\u2019s pretty much about them and their personal comfort, convenience, and satisfaction. That calling just kind of goes by the wayside. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has called people into existence. The calling has to do with how He\u2019s put them together, which should live itself out in terms of what they actually <em>do<\/em> in their day-to-day life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Back to that verse I read earlier\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cWe are His workmanship,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in Ephesians 2:10. That word means: \u201cWe are God\u2019s work of art.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has pulled out a paint brush, and He has created a painting that\u2019s intended to live out a story that honors Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That should occur in our lives\u2014as men and women, husbands and wives, moms and dads. We should help our children recognize that workmanship too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, let me plus that\u2014not only are we a beautiful piece of art, which has beauty to it\u2014but it also has functionality to it. You know, if you go back to the original context\u2014here in Ephesians\u2014Ephesus was a first century city in Greece. Imagine an artisan in Greece\u2014in Ephesus\u2014who\u2019s working in pottery. He\u2019s fashioning this piece of pottery\u2014because it is God\u2019s hands that are on the pottery, it\u2019s a masterpiece.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, if the potter fashions that piece of clay one way, it\u2019s perfect for holding wine or water. If he fashions it yet another way, it\u2019s perfect for holding bread or grain. If he fashions it yet another way, it\u2019s perfect for putting oil in and a wick, and burning it as a lantern. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, the artist gives that vessel design features which gives it functionality\u2014which has the idea of purpose to it. So, not only is this thing beautiful, it also is purposeful\u2014there\u2019s a reason why it was put together\u2014it\u2019s got a use to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why the verse goes on to say that we\u2019re created in Christ Jesus <em>for <\/em>good works\u2014not just generic good works like helping little old ladies across the street and feeding the homeless\u2014those are good works \/ they need to be done\u2014but, in light of that word, \u201cworkmanship,\u201d those are specific good works tied to the nature of the workmanship\u2014which means: \u201cIf you figure out your workmanship, you figure out the nature of the good works that have your name on them. You\u2019ve thereby figured out, \u2018What am I called to do?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my case, let me just speak for me\u2014if you were to look in my motivational pattern, you would see God\u2019s given me some facility with words and the ability to write. You know, Paul said, \u201cWoe is me if I do not preach the gospel.\u201d I feel like \u201cWoe is me if I do not write.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s a sense of calling. I need to take the thoughts, and experiences, and stories that God has given to me and, in some way, shape or form\u2014find a way to put those into writing because, somehow, He wants to benefit other people through me doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, you talk about writing\u2014I\u2019m thinking about John Grisham\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the lawyer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but he\u2019d go home at night, after working in the law office, and he started writing novels.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tom Clancy was an insurance salesman who went home at night and worked on spy thrillers; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Both of them found they really were better at\u2014or liked\u2014writing better than what they were originally doing. What about the person who says: \u201cOkay, I do my job. It\u2019s kind of the way I support my habit. My habit is what I do at night and on weekends\u2014that\u2019s really where my passion is. My job\u2019s just what I\u2019ve got to do so I can pay the bills so I can do what I\u2019m really called to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> I call that waiting tables. Waiting tables is a very noble occupation; but as we all know, there are many artisans and creative types who have to wait tables in order to, as you say, support their habit. I guess I want to put a little nobler vision on that task. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not be in a position where you can get paid to do this thing that\u2019s in you\u2014like an actor, or a musician, or a novelist, or something like that\u2014again, because of the values in our culture. Whatever you do, don\u2019t say, \u201cWell, because I can\u2019t make a living at it, I guess I shouldn\u2019t do it at all.\u201d Do it avocationally\u2014it\u2019s <em>imperative<\/em> for you to do that. If you do it and you apply yourself to it, you absolutely don\u2019t know when that so-called break will come through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually challenge people by saying: \u201cYou\u2019re running around telling everybody you\u2019re an accountant. You don\u2019t really like accounting but it\u2019s a way to pay the bills because what you really love to do is watercolors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGreat! The next time somebody asks you, \u2018What do you do?\u2019 say, \u2018I\u2019m an artist.\u2019 You say, \u2018But Bill, I can\u2019t say I\u2019m an artist!\u2019 I say, \u2018Well, do you do art?\u2019 \u2018Yes.\u2019 Have people responded to that art? \u2018Yes.\u2019 Have you ever sold any of that art? \u2018Oh, yes. I had one little thing that sold in a craft show\u2019 or whatever. That\u2019s in your soul\u2014that\u2019s your gift! Accounting is your form of waiting tables while you\u2019re developing your art and hoping that life cooperates, and something good happens, and, next thing you know, you\u2019re\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a friend who says he worked 25 years to be an overnight success. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And I want to encourage a lot of our listeners who are\u2014particularly Boomers\u2014and they are like: \u201cBill, you don\u2019t understand. I\u2019ve got three kids in college. I\u2019ve got to do whatever I can to bring money in the door.\u201d I say, \u201cI understand that, but you\u2019re not going to have those kids to be responsible for forever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s say your youngest is in eighth grade. That means you\u2019ve got another\u2014what?\u2014nine more years, roughly, that I believe you should take some responsibility to make sure that they\u2019re provided for. Well, that\u2019s a wonderful runway\u2014a nine-year runway\u2014for you to start to dream about: \u201cIf I really figure out what my gifting is\u2014I think I have a clue\u2014but maybe confirm that and let me lean into that. Let me start to do some things on the side that fit that and that really give me energy. Let me begin to create a vision for my life, for nine years out. What could it look like if I trust that and I think, \u2018Okay, when my options open up, how can I really start to lean into that?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat will give you hope to get through those nine years in a job that may not fit you very well; but more importantly, when you start to gain energy from doing this thing, even if it\u2019s at night and on the weekends, that energy gets translated back to give you the energy you need to do work that doesn\u2019t really fit you\u2014because that\u2019s draining.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can give you a great illustration of this. Barbara was, for a number of years\u2014I think it was 29 years\u2014a mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, she did not\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s still a mom\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s still a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you\u2019re just talking about not having kids in the home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. Job description-wise, she did it all. I mean, when they left to go establish their own homes, in essence, she got fired. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Her job, for the most part, went away. So, we took a planning retreat to evaluate how best to use her gifts and abilities in this next vocational assignment for her. It took about four or five years to figure that out. To your point, about how you have to kind of discover\u2014or, in her case, rediscover\u2014some latent gifts that had to be put on the shelf because raising kids would not allow it to occur.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe took her study of the Bible\u2014which she has been a student of the Bible for decades\u2014and her ability as an artist to create beautiful things around holidays for moms and dads \/ grandmas and grandpas to pass on truth, generationally, to their children and grandchildren. It\u2019s called Ever Thine Home. So, she\u2019s a great illustration of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question that I want you to answer\u2014that\u2019s this: \u201cIf we transported the three of us, right now, to a country in Africa, our discussion around satisfaction and giftedness in jobs might be nuanced just a bit differently. Do you think we\u2019re expecting too much today out of our work and out of our jobs, Bill, here in America?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Really, the question I think you\u2019re asking is: \u201cIs giftedness just a luxury?\u201d I get asked that all the time: \u201cBill, this is great if you have options; but if you don\u2019t have options, what good does your giftedness do?\u201d My answer is that giftedness is not a luxury\u2014giftedness is a <em>reality<\/em>\u2014it is the human condition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t change the fact that many parts of our world are impoverished, but neither can I change the fact that people have giftedness within them\u2014it\u2019s simply <em>there<\/em>. When I put it together with the fact that the reason it\u2019s there is God actually wants humans to create value, and that includes economic value, a light goes on in my head and I ask: \u201cWhat we\u2019re saying is that it\u2019s not for lack of giftedness that these people don\u2019t have the means that they have. Well then, what\u2019s the lack? The lack is opportunity.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure enough, today, people are discovering microfinance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They\u2019re discovering that you make a loan to a guy, who otherwise is sitting around, starving. He buys a bicycle. He can begin to transport bananas to market with that bicycle. Next thing you know, he\u2019s making money\u2014he pays back the loan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNext thing you know, his business is expanding so he hires some more people. This <em>whole <\/em>community benefits because his giftedness got unleashed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the book, I have an example of a community in South America, where the community is very poor people\u2014they basically live in a garbage dump. It\u2019s a terrible place to live \/ it\u2019s a terrible place to grow up. But somebody began to form and fashion musical instruments out of the scraps in the garbage dump. All the men got excited about crafting these things together. Then they formed an orchestra with the young people in the community. You listen to these kids play this music, and it brings tears to your eyes\u2014you see the joy\/the excitement. One little girl\u2014her reaction to the whole thing\u2014she says, \u201cI love the music because it makes me feel joy.\u201d Light, you see, is kind of shed on this little community that lives in a garbage dump because somebody unleashed the giftedness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one last assignment I\u2019ve got for you that I want to ask you before we conclude today\u2019s broadcast; but, first, Bob, tell them how to get a copy of the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The book is called <em>The Person Called You. <\/em>We\u2019ve got copies of the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. You, and your brother, and sister gave tributes to your dad. We\u2019ve featured them, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought, in preparation for this broadcast, I would give you the opportunity to give your mom a tribute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness\u2014yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She really enjoyed listening to your tribute to your dad. I\u2019d like to surprise her with a tribute. Could you give her a tribute?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said at the memorial service\u2014and it\u2019s absolutely true\u2014that I was the youngest of four, but the truth is I was mom\u2019s favorite. [Laughter] What I mean by that is she saw in me things that I did not see in myself. From a very young age, she nurtured me. We talk about sort of encouraging the giftedness\u2014Mom did that with me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother <em>never <\/em>shamed me for the energy that I would display. Now, look! I was a very rambunctious kid \/ I was the classic precocious kid. Worst of all, I was the classic mischievous kid. You know, people talk about coming to faith and they came out of a background of crime, and drugs, and all of this stuff. Well, I didn\u2019t grow up in that background; but, trust me, when, at four-and-a-half, I was confronted with the notion of sin, that made all the sense in the world to me\u2014I knew I was a sinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom believed in me. Despite whatever sins I had, she saw there was real potential in me\u2014she nurtured it \/ she encouraged it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, I want to say, \u201cThank you.\u201d I said it at the memorial service and I believe it even more so today\u2014when I was a child, growing up, you were there. You held me. You nurtured me. You read to me. You showed me right from wrong.
