So when do you think you had figured out what you were good at?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you think you knew in high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no. I knew I was good at playing basketball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew you were \u201cgood for nothing\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what you knew. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not going to make a living, being as short as I was, at playing basketball. I would say\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you were not just short, you were slow, too, so that\u2019s one thing. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was very, very slow, and was not that good of a shot. But why bore people with the facts?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I would say it wasn\u2019t until I was in my 30s \/ I think a good bit of the 20s\u2014at least, in my life\u2014was spent testing some things to find out what I <em>didn\u2019t <\/em>want to do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014kind of eliminated\u2014you know, the diagnosis \/ like a doctor does. I began to hone in and kind of sharpen it to say, \u201cYou know,\u201d\u2014by the time I got in my 20s, I thought\u2014\u201cI like this thing called leadership; and I like seeing people\u2019s lives transformed\/redeemed by the reality of coming into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also kind of look back on my own story\u2014I was surrounded by family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> That helps a lot; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really does help a lot when you look back and say, \u201cYou know, I was always surrounded by family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a guest with us here\u2014Bill Hendricks\u2014who joins us again. Bill\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s the President of the Giftedness Center, a Dallas-based consulting firm that specializes in helping organizations and individuals be effective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re really talking about a verse of Scripture. I\u2019m reading from different translations this week. This one\u2014you can tell from this\u2014is an old, old Bible\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the Amplified Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is the Bible where they find every possible meaning of the word and just throw it all in there so you get really long verses. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You get really long verses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014with lots of parentheses. If you don\u2019t have an Amplified Bible in your library, you need to get one because, sometimes, it\u2019s really healthy to pull this out and just kind of let the amplification of the Scriptures speak. I want to read one verse\u2014Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014which is the passage that comes right after the promise of how we are saved through faith in Christ and by grace alone. Verse 10 says: \u201cFor we are God\u2019s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we might do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn essence, what this is saying is: \u201cGod\u2019s got a plan for your life. He has gifted you to do certain things. So, it would really be in both God\u2019s best interest and yours to figure out what your gifting is to be able to do that.\u201d To help you in that, Bill has written a book called <em>The Person Called You: Why You\u2019re Here, Why You Matter, &amp; What You Should Do with Your Life.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is this your fingerprint that\u2019s on the cover?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Fortunately not! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just checking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Fortunately not. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bill, take us to an individual that you helped\u2014you helped them find out what they were specifically gifted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Sure. I had a young man, who came to me three years out of law school. He was very discouraged\u2014he had a lot of law school debt, he was at a failing law firm, and he hated life. Law doesn\u2019t fit him and he thinks: \u201cI\u2019ve made a terrible choice and now I\u2019m in debt. My life\u2019s over. What else can I do besides law?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I do the process that I do to help people determine their giftedness\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, let me stop you here, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said you \u201cdo the process that you do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Can you describe what you did at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes, I had Alex tell me eight stories from his life about activities he has done that he\u2019s enjoyed doing and he felt that he did well\u2014going back to childhood and all the way to the present. Then, we analyze those stories. We discover there are all of these dots that connect among the stories\u2014there\u2019s a pattern of motivation and behavior that\u2019s very consistent for him. At the heart of that consistent pattern was to coordinate people and projects\u2014he took the most joy or satisfaction from that kind of a situation\u2014but he was in law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLook, I really think, for now, we\u2019re going to just have to keep you in law and see where this goes.\u201d Fortunately, God opened up a door. He got into a firm that was not failing\u2014much bigger and it was stable\u2014it was still far from a good fit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout three years into it, he called me up one night \/ on a Friday night. He was all excited. I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d He said: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to believe it! The guy, who\u2019s head of the legal department, called me in today and said, \u2018I want you to go home and figure out what your best use to this company\u2019.\u201d In other words, he was basically asking him to write his own job description.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He took the information that I had given him about his giftedness and he kind of put a job together. What he ended up doing was this: He went around the country to these local and regional firms that they hired to do the work and made sure that they were doing the work the way this firm wanted. Technically-speaking, this fellow was not practicing law\u2014technically-speaking, he was doing what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Management.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Coordinating people and projects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He just knew enough about the law to be able to do that work. It\u2019s a great picture of what happens when somebody really discovers, and then leans into their gifting, and trusts it, and exercises it. Opportunities come and they kind of move up the ladder of \u201cfit,\u201d if you will. I\u2019ve seen that thousands of times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do most people, who are going to work today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You knew the question!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> I already know the question you\u2019re going to ask. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, are they doing what they were made to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s let Gallup tell us what that is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Gallup, since 2000, has kept track of what it calls \u201cemployee engagement.\u201d Engagement means how emotionally-connected a person feels to their job. The latest statistics that they have are from 2012, and it\u2019s the lowest it\u2019s ever been. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirty percent of American workers feel engaged with their work\u2014that means they really kind of like their job and gain energy from it\u2014that means that 70 percent of American workers are unengaged\/disengaged from their work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf those, 52 percent are what they call \u201cunengaged,\u201d which means they go to work, they get a paycheck, they do the work\u2014but it\u2019s just a job\u2014they don\u2019t put their heart into it. But then there\u2019s 18 percent, who are what they call \u201cactively disengaged.\u201d Those people actually hate their job\u2014they\u2019re mad about it\u2014and they are actually undermining the work that everybody else is doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you stop and think about 70 percent of our work force is unengaged in their work. That probably means that 70 percent of our work force is in work that really doesn\u2019t fit them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And think of the economic cost of that because they\u2019re not as productive. Think of the human cost of that! Think of the stress \/ think of the boredom. Think of the waste of human capital. Think of the things that they take home at the end of the day because they\u2019ve been in conflict with their co-workers or their boss\u2014they feel like they\u2019re living a purposeless life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know you deal with families. My heart goes out to people who\u2014when their father and\/or mother come home\u2014their mother or father has hated their job all day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well what kind of frame of mind does that bring to a parent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, let\u2019s talk about that person, who is listening to your description. They say: \u201cThat\u2019s me! I\u2019m stuck! Am I stuck here for the rest of my life?\u201d What should that person do?\u2014other than get a copy of your book, obviously, and begin to wade through this and do a bit of a diagnosis of what they\u2019re gifted to do. Where should they start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They start by figuring out what their gifts are. Then they start generating options of what kind of work would be meaningful. Look, if you\u2019re in a bad-job fit, that doesn\u2019t make you a bad person. It simply means there\u2019s a mismatch between what the employer\u2014who\u2019s legitimately got a function they need done\u2014what they expect and what you\u2019re, made by God, to deliver. There\u2019s a mismatch between those two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first and foremost step is: \u201cWell, what kind of work <em>should<\/em> you be doing?\u201d That\u2019s all dependent on this gifting\u2014so that\u2019s the place to start. Having begun to discover something of that, you have to sort of look around at the options that are available and say, \u201cWhere might be a better fit?\u201d Then, begin to try to move toward that. Now, if people are <em>praying<\/em> as they\u2019re doing this, they can trust that, behind the scenes, God\u2019s at work. God did not put you here on the planet to waste your life in work that really is not about you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou read Ephesians 2:10\u2014let me give you Bill\u2019s sort of take on that. One of the take-aways I take from that verse is that\u2014from eternity, God looks out on the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. He sees certain good work that He wants done. He wants that good work done\u2014not just in churches, and mission agencies, and ministries\u2014He wants that good work done in every aspect of our economy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He wants good work in finance; He wants good work in management; He wants good work in putting parts together; He wants good work in doing farming; and He wants good work in homemaking. He\u2019s got all of this work that He\u2019s got for humans to do. At any rate, He\u2019s identified \/ certain of that and He says, \u201cI want this done.\u201d So, to get that done, what does He do? He dreams up a person\u2014the person we now call by your name. At just the right point in time and space, He renders you, as it were, with His own hands. He <em>fashions<\/em> you\u2014just like that verse says\u2014you\u2019re His handiwork\u2014His made-thing \/ His crafted-thing. He put just the right pieces into you and you\u2019re now the perfect tool, if you will, for those specific good works.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour privilege now\u2014having awakened to what this gifting is\u2014is to then begin to ask: \u201cWow, Lord! If you\u2019ve given me this, where might I begin to apply that? Where might I begin to deploy that for your purposes and also\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to be perfectly practical about it\u2014\u201cas a means of providing for myself?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in Genesis 1, the very first thing that God ever says to human beings is, \u201cI want you to make the world fruitful.\u201d The world, on its own, is not very fruitful\u2014it just provides the raw resources\u2014only humans can add value. Well, how do they do that? God has given to each person a means of adding value\u2014that\u2019s what we call your giftedness. Your giftedness is a means of making the world more fruitful\u2014whatever that looks like\u2014and then, that translates into getting paid so that you can meet your needs\/and your family\u2019s needs and you can be a self-supporting human being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, I can hear the person right now, saying: \u201cOkay, I hear what you\u2019ve said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is, ultimately, going to demand a <em>huge<\/em> massive step of faith and trust in God, as I pray and ask God to lead me, but step out of all the benefits\u2014pay, vacation, number of years I\u2019ve been there,\u201d\u2014maybe it\u2019s tenure\u2014maybe it\u2019s insurance \/ health insurance, pension\u2014golden handcuffs\u2014they call it on Wall Street.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You call these, in your book, traps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They\u2019re traps. Let\u2019s face it\u2014if you <em>love<\/em> your job, there\u2019s a sense in which you would do it whether you got paid to do it or not. Well, what if you don\u2019t love what you do? Unless the energy to do that comes from somewhere, you\u2019re not going to stick around with that. Well, where do you think that energy tends to come from? The biggest source of it tends to be more money from the employer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou asked the question: \u201cSo what does that person do?\u201d And my answer is: \u201cIt all depends on how great the pain is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see\u2014in my work, many of the people that come my way are in significant pain. I had a woman come to me\u2014she had been promoted so many times. They wanted her to be CEO \/ she had refused. She came into my office and said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to do something else.\u201d I said: \u201cWell, it sounds like you\u2019ve been at this company for a long time. You must like it.\u201d She said, \u201cI hate it!\u201d I said: \u201cReally? Tell me about that.\u201d She said: \u201cBill, every time I try to walk away, they offer me more money. I\u2019m just at the point where I don\u2019t care about the money anymore. I just can\u2019t do this anymore\u2014I\u2019ve got to find out something else to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis kind of gives the lie to this idea\u2014it\u2019s very prevalent in self-help books\u2014where most people start with this discussion of what you should do with your life is to say, \u201cIf money were no object, what would you do?\u201d as if the money is the key factor. Well, I can tell you\u2014that\u2019s not even the determining factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a guy call me up from San Antonio one day. He said: \u201cBill, I\u2019ve got to come see you. I\u2019ve got so much money I don\u2019t know what to do with it all, but I don\u2019t know what to do with my life.\u201d This is what happens for people who cash-out and somehow end up independently wealthy. They\u2019re still trying to figure out what they \u201creally should be doing,\u201d\u2014\u201cWhat was I born to do? What should I do when I grow up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have some very wealthy people struggling with that issue\u2014which tells me\u2014that while money, yes, is a consideration, it is <em>not <\/em>the <em>key<\/em> to determining what you should be doing with your life. I\u2019m afraid, unfortunately, the way our culture has worked\u2014so many people have taken on those golden handcuffs. They got into work that maybe didn\u2019t fit them, but they kept getting paid. Now, they\u2019ve got the mortgage, and the private schools, and the second house. Boy, if they make any change in that, they\u2019re going to have problems at home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me take you to the other end of the spectrum, though\u2014to the person who, in Bono\u2019s words, \u201cstill hasn\u2019t found what he\u2019s looking for.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He goes: \u201cYou know\u2014I like watching TV; I like skateboarding; I like playing video games. I\u2019m just not sure what I want to do.\u201d What should he be doing while he\u2019s trying to figure out what he wants to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a tough situation because somebody\u2019s, who\u2019s just kind of slacking off\u2014 I guess is the best way I can describe it\u2014and sort of just playing, you have to ask: \u201cHow much pain they\u2019re really in?\u201d Somebody may have made it very, very comfortable for them\u2014like their parents. I mean, this is one of the big problems for too many Millennials.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Their parents, in a sense, have made it too comfortable. That\u2019s a complicated discussion\u2014I don\u2019t want to get too deep into it\u2014but I\u2019d say to that person: \u201cListen, we\u2019re not talking about the path of least resistance or passive engagement in watching TV\/something like that. We need to go back and find out where, if anywhere, we can find some instances where you actually spent time putting energy into something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe may have to go back to when you were a little kid and you played with LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s,\u201d for instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> \u201cWe may have to go back and find that, when you were in eighth grade, you suddenly got a fascination with computers. You learned a little bit about computer programming, and you spent some time kind of trying to put together a little program, which you did for how to balance a checkbook,\u201d or whatever it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> If we can get even the simplest kind of activity that the person engaged in\u2014where they put energy into it and they gained satisfaction from it\u2014we now have somewhat of a basis to begin to tell some stories and then look for a pattern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was thinking back to Bob\u2019s question about what you do with the guy, who\u2019s skateboarding, and watching video games, and movies, and TV, and who\u2019s not on a mission\u2014and I reflected back to\u2014I don\u2019t remember \/ early in my years, upon graduation\u2014of memorizing a Proverb that talks about, \u201cConsider the ant, o thou sluggard.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The phrase says, \u201cA little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest\u201d\u2014and you can just picture a guy taking a nap in the morning, and a nap in the afternoon, and sleeping in the next day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My daughter told me that was her life verse, at one point. [Laughter] She said: \u201cThat\u2019s my life verse\u2014\u2018A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can just tell you that that verse got me off my duff on more than one occasion and go: \u201cYou know what? There\u2019s destruction headed my way if I don\u2019t consider the way of one of the smallest creatures on the planet.\u201d I think, in some of these situations, the issue\u2019s a spiritual issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> At its core, Bill, it\u2019s someone who needs to take a step back and say: \u201cWait a second! God didn\u2019t put you here to <em>rust out<\/em>. He put you here to <em>wear out<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbeing used by Him in the greatest commission ever given man\u2014the Great Commission\u2014the commandment to \u201cGo and make disciples of all nations...\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re living in a country, right now, where the fires are burning all over the nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not talking about fires in California, and Oregon, and Washington\u2014I\u2019m talking about moral brushfires, where our country is breaking into pieces because of its lack of morality and lack of spiritual heritage. There\u2019s an opportunity today to make a difference in young people\u2019s lives and to invest your life, for Jesus Christ, as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m glad you mentioned, at the top of the show, this whole business about older people investing in the lives of younger people. You know, I wrote this book for two audiences\u2014one was the person, who\u2019s trying to figure out what to do with their lives\u2014the second was for people who <em>work<\/em> with people who are trying to figure out what to do with their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That would be parents, by the way!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes. I actually think that the latter audience is, in some ways, more important to me, right here, than the other because, if you don\u2019t know what to do with your life\u2014particularly, if you\u2019re younger\u2014you may never pick up this book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you\u2019re somebody who actually is paying attention to helping somebody figure out what to do with their life, you\u2019re always looking for tools and resources. Well, this book is for you: You may be a college professor, or a pastor, or a youth worker \/ you may work in a college ministry; you may be a counselor; you may just be somebody in a company and you see a younger person, who\u2019s been hired recently, and you think: \u201cYou know, they have potential. But they <em>really<\/em> need to figure out who they are,\u201d\u2014you kind of have a heart for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, this is a tool that you can use. In the back of the book, there\u2019s an exercise which, frankly, is an abridged version of a much larger exercise on my website that will help you take somebody through this process of telling stories and looking for patterns. So when do you think you had figured out what you were good at?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you think you knew in high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no. I knew I was good at playing basketball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew you were \u201cgood for nothing\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what you knew. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not going to make a living, being as short as I was, at playing basketball. I would say\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you were not just short, you were slow, too, so that\u2019s one thing. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was very, very slow, and was not that good of a shot. But why bore people with the facts?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I would say it wasn\u2019t until I was in my 30s \/ I think a good bit of the 20s\u2014at least, in my life\u2014was spent testing some things to find out what I <em>didn\u2019t <\/em>want to do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014kind of eliminated\u2014you know, the diagnosis \/ like a doctor does. I began to hone in and kind of sharpen it to say, \u201cYou know,\u201d\u2014by the time I got in my 20s, I thought\u2014\u201cI like this thing called leadership; and I like seeing people\u2019s lives transformed\/redeemed by the reality of coming into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also kind of look back on my own story\u2014I was surrounded by family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> That helps a lot; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really does help a lot when you look back and say, \u201cYou know, I was always surrounded by family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a guest with us here\u2014Bill Hendricks\u2014who joins us again. Bill\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s the President of the Giftedness Center, a Dallas-based consulting firm that specializes in helping organizations and individuals be effective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re really talking about a verse of Scripture. I\u2019m reading from different translations this week. This one\u2014you can tell from this\u2014is an old, old Bible\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the Amplified Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is the Bible where they find every possible meaning of the word and just throw it all in there so you get really long verses. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You get really long verses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014with lots of parentheses. If you don\u2019t have an Amplified Bible in your library, you need to get one because, sometimes, it\u2019s really healthy to pull this out and just kind of let the amplification of the Scriptures speak. I want to read one verse\u2014Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014which is the passage that comes right after the promise of how we are saved through faith in Christ and by grace alone. Verse 10 says: \u201cFor we are God\u2019s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we might do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn essence, what this is saying is: \u201cGod\u2019s got a plan for your life. He has gifted you to do certain things. So, it would really be in both God\u2019s best interest and yours to figure out what your gifting is to be able to do that.\u201d To help you in that, Bill has written a book called <em>The Person Called You: Why You\u2019re Here, Why You Matter, &amp; What You Should Do with Your Life.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is this your fingerprint that\u2019s on the cover?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Fortunately not! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just checking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Fortunately not. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bill, take us to an individual that you helped\u2014you helped them find out what they were specifically gifted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Sure. I had a young man, who came to me three years out of law school. He was very discouraged\u2014he had a lot of law school debt, he was at a failing law firm, and he hated life. Law doesn\u2019t fit him and he thinks: \u201cI\u2019ve made a terrible choice and now I\u2019m in debt. My life\u2019s over. What else can I do besides law?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I do the process that I do to help people determine their giftedness\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, let me stop you here, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said you \u201cdo the process that you do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Can you describe what you did at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes, I had Alex tell me eight stories from his life about activities he has done that he\u2019s enjoyed doing and he felt that he did well\u2014going back to childhood and all the way to the present. Then, we analyze those stories. We discover there are all of these dots that connect among the stories\u2014there\u2019s a pattern of motivation and behavior that\u2019s very consistent for him. At the heart of that consistent pattern was to coordinate people and projects\u2014he took the most joy or satisfaction from that kind of a situation\u2014but he was in law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLook, I really think, for now, we\u2019re going to just have to keep you in law and see where this goes.\u201d Fortunately, God opened up a door. He got into a firm that was not failing\u2014much bigger and it was stable\u2014it was still far from a good fit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout three years into it, he called me up one night \/ on a Friday night. He was all excited. I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d He said: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to believe it! The guy, who\u2019s head of the legal department, called me in today and said, \u2018I want you to go home and figure out what your best use to this company\u2019.\u201d In other words, he was basically asking him to write his own job description.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He took the information that I had given him about his giftedness and he kind of put a job together. What he ended up doing was this: He went around the country to these local and regional firms that they hired to do the work and made sure that they were doing the work the way this firm wanted. Technically-speaking, this fellow was not practicing law\u2014technically-speaking, he was doing what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Management.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Coordinating people and projects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He just knew enough about the law to be able to do that work. It\u2019s a great picture of what happens when somebody really discovers, and then leans into their gifting, and trusts it, and exercises it. Opportunities come and they kind of move up the ladder of \u201cfit,\u201d if you will. I\u2019ve seen that thousands of times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do most people, who are going to work today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You knew the question!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> I already know the question you\u2019re going to ask. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, are they doing what they were made to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s let Gallup tell us what that is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Gallup, since 2000, has kept track of what it calls \u201cemployee engagement.\u201d Engagement means how emotionally-connected a person feels to their job. The latest statistics that they have are from 2012, and it\u2019s the lowest it\u2019s ever been. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirty percent of American workers feel engaged with their work\u2014that means they really kind of like their job and gain energy from it\u2014that means that 70 percent of American workers are unengaged\/disengaged from their work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf those, 52 percent are what they call \u201cunengaged,\u201d which means they go to work, they get a paycheck, they do the work\u2014but it\u2019s just a job\u2014they don\u2019t put their heart into it. But then there\u2019s 18 percent, who are what they call \u201cactively disengaged.\u201d Those people actually hate their job\u2014they\u2019re mad about it\u2014and they are actually undermining the work that everybody else is doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you stop and think about 70 percent of our work force is unengaged in their work. That probably means that 70 percent of our work force is in work that really doesn\u2019t fit them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> And think of the economic cost of that because they\u2019re not as productive. Think of the human cost of that! Think of the stress \/ think of the boredom. Think of the waste of human capital. Think of the things that they take home at the end of the day because they\u2019ve been in conflict with their co-workers or their boss\u2014they feel like they\u2019re living a purposeless life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know you deal with families. My heart goes out to people who\u2014when their father and\/or mother come home\u2014their mother or father has hated their job all day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well what kind of frame of mind does that bring to a parent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, let\u2019s talk about that person, who is listening to your description. They say: \u201cThat\u2019s me! I\u2019m stuck! Am I stuck here for the rest of my life?\u201d What should that person do?\u2014other than get a copy of your book, obviously, and begin to wade through this and do a bit of a diagnosis of what they\u2019re gifted to do. Where should they start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They start by figuring out what their gifts are. Then they start generating options of what kind of work would be meaningful. Look, if you\u2019re in a bad-job fit, that doesn\u2019t make you a bad person. It simply means there\u2019s a mismatch between what the employer\u2014who\u2019s legitimately got a function they need done\u2014what they expect and what you\u2019re, made by God, to deliver. There\u2019s a mismatch between those two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first and foremost step is: \u201cWell, what kind of work <em>should<\/em> you be doing?\u201d That\u2019s all dependent on this gifting\u2014so that\u2019s the place to start. Having begun to discover something of that, you have to sort of look around at the options that are available and say, \u201cWhere might be a better fit?\u201d Then, begin to try to move toward that. Now, if people are <em>praying<\/em> as they\u2019re doing this, they can trust that, behind the scenes, God\u2019s at work. God did not put you here on the planet to waste your life in work that really is not about you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou read Ephesians 2:10\u2014let me give you Bill\u2019s sort of take on that. One of the take-aways I take from that verse is that\u2014from eternity, God looks out on the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. He sees certain good work that He wants done. He wants that good work done\u2014not just in churches, and mission agencies, and ministries\u2014He wants that good work done in every aspect of our economy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> He wants good work in finance; He wants good work in management; He wants good work in putting parts together; He wants good work in doing farming; and He wants good work in homemaking. He\u2019s got all of this work that He\u2019s got for humans to do. At any rate, He\u2019s identified \/ certain of that and He says, \u201cI want this done.\u201d So, to get that done, what does He do? He dreams up a person\u2014the person we now call by your name. At just the right point in time and space, He renders you, as it were, with His own hands. He <em>fashions<\/em> you\u2014just like that verse says\u2014you\u2019re His handiwork\u2014His made-thing \/ His crafted-thing. He put just the right pieces into you and you\u2019re now the perfect tool, if you will, for those specific good works.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour privilege now\u2014having awakened to what this gifting is\u2014is to then begin to ask: \u201cWow, Lord! If you\u2019ve given me this, where might I begin to apply that? Where might I begin to deploy that for your purposes and also\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to be perfectly practical about it\u2014\u201cas a means of providing for myself?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in Genesis 1, the very first thing that God ever says to human beings is, \u201cI want you to make the world fruitful.\u201d The world, on its own, is not very fruitful\u2014it just provides the raw resources\u2014only humans can add value. Well, how do they do that? God has given to each person a means of adding value\u2014that\u2019s what we call your giftedness. Your giftedness is a means of making the world more fruitful\u2014whatever that looks like\u2014and then, that translates into getting paid so that you can meet your needs\/and your family\u2019s needs and you can be a self-supporting human being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, I can hear the person right now, saying: \u201cOkay, I hear what you\u2019ve said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is, ultimately, going to demand a <em>huge<\/em> massive step of faith and trust in God, as I pray and ask God to lead me, but step out of all the benefits\u2014pay, vacation, number of years I\u2019ve been there,\u201d\u2014maybe it\u2019s tenure\u2014maybe it\u2019s insurance \/ health insurance, pension\u2014golden handcuffs\u2014they call it on Wall Street.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You call these, in your book, traps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> They\u2019re traps. Let\u2019s face it\u2014if you <em>love<\/em> your job, there\u2019s a sense in which you would do it whether you got paid to do it or not. Well, what if you don\u2019t love what you do? Unless the energy to do that comes from somewhere, you\u2019re not going to stick around with that. Well, where do you think that energy tends to come from? The biggest source of it tends to be more money from the employer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou asked the question: \u201cSo what does that person do?\u201d And my answer is: \u201cIt all depends on how great the pain is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see\u2014in my work, many of the people that come my way are in significant pain. I had a woman come to me\u2014she had been promoted so many times. They wanted her to be CEO \/ she had refused. She came into my office and said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to do something else.\u201d I said: \u201cWell, it sounds like you\u2019ve been at this company for a long time. You must like it.\u201d She said, \u201cI hate it!\u201d I said: \u201cReally? Tell me about that.\u201d She said: \u201cBill, every time I try to walk away, they offer me more money. I\u2019m just at the point where I don\u2019t care about the money anymore. I just can\u2019t do this anymore\u2014I\u2019ve got to find out something else to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis kind of gives the lie to this idea\u2014it\u2019s very prevalent in self-help books\u2014where most people start with this discussion of what you should do with your life is to say, \u201cIf money were no object, what would you do?\u201d as if the money is the key factor. Well, I can tell you\u2014that\u2019s not even the determining factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a guy call me up from San Antonio one day. He said: \u201cBill, I\u2019ve got to come see you. I\u2019ve got so much money I don\u2019t know what to do with it all, but I don\u2019t know what to do with my life.\u201d This is what happens for people who cash-out and somehow end up independently wealthy. They\u2019re still trying to figure out what they \u201creally should be doing,\u201d\u2014\u201cWhat was I born to do? What should I do when I grow up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have some very wealthy people struggling with that issue\u2014which tells me\u2014that while money, yes, is a consideration, it is <em>not <\/em>the <em>key<\/em> to determining what you should be doing with your life. I\u2019m afraid, unfortunately, the way our culture has worked\u2014so many people have taken on those golden handcuffs. They got into work that maybe didn\u2019t fit them, but they kept getting paid. Now, they\u2019ve got the mortgage, and the private schools, and the second house. Boy, if they make any change in that, they\u2019re going to have problems at home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me take you to the other end of the spectrum, though\u2014to the person who, in Bono\u2019s words, \u201cstill hasn\u2019t found what he\u2019s looking for.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He goes: \u201cYou know\u2014I like watching TV; I like skateboarding; I like playing video games. I\u2019m just not sure what I want to do.\u201d What should he be doing while he\u2019s trying to figure out what he wants to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a tough situation because somebody\u2019s, who\u2019s just kind of slacking off\u2014 I guess is the best way I can describe it\u2014and sort of just playing, you have to ask: \u201cHow much pain they\u2019re really in?\u201d Somebody may have made it very, very comfortable for them\u2014like their parents. I mean, this is one of the big problems for too many Millennials.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Their parents, in a sense, have made it too comfortable. That\u2019s a complicated discussion\u2014I don\u2019t want to get too deep into it\u2014but I\u2019d say to that person: \u201cListen, we\u2019re not talking about the path of least resistance or passive engagement in watching TV\/something like that. We need to go back and find out where, if anywhere, we can find some instances where you actually spent time putting energy into something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe may have to go back to when you were a little kid and you played with LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s,\u201d for instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> \u201cWe may have to go back and find that, when you were in eighth grade, you suddenly got a fascination with computers. You learned a little bit about computer programming, and you spent some time kind of trying to put together a little program, which you did for how to balance a checkbook,\u201d or whatever it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> If we can get even the simplest kind of activity that the person engaged in\u2014where they put energy into it and they gained satisfaction from it\u2014we now have somewhat of a basis to begin to tell some stories and then look for a pattern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was thinking back to Bob\u2019s question about what you do with the guy, who\u2019s skateboarding, and watching video games, and movies, and TV, and who\u2019s not on a mission\u2014and I reflected back to\u2014I don\u2019t remember \/ early in my years, upon graduation\u2014of memorizing a Proverb that talks about, \u201cConsider the ant, o thou sluggard.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The phrase says, \u201cA little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest\u201d\u2014and you can just picture a guy taking a nap in the morning, and a nap in the afternoon, and sleeping in the next day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My daughter told me that was her life verse, at one point. [Laughter] She said: \u201cThat\u2019s my life verse\u2014\u2018A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can just tell you that that verse got me off my duff on more than one occasion and go: \u201cYou know what? There\u2019s destruction headed my way if I don\u2019t consider the way of one of the smallest creatures on the planet.\u201d I think, in some of these situations, the issue\u2019s a spiritual issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> At its core, Bill, it\u2019s someone who needs to take a step back and say: \u201cWait a second! God didn\u2019t put you here to <em>rust out<\/em>. He put you here to <em>wear out<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbeing used by Him in the greatest commission ever given man\u2014the Great Commission\u2014the commandment to \u201cGo and make disciples of all nations...\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re living in a country, right now, where the fires are burning all over the nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not talking about fires in California, and Oregon, and Washington\u2014I\u2019m talking about moral brushfires, where our country is breaking into pieces because of its lack of morality and lack of spiritual heritage. There\u2019s an opportunity today to make a difference in young people\u2019s lives and to invest your life, for Jesus Christ, as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m glad you mentioned, at the top of the show, this whole business about older people investing in the lives of younger people. You know, I wrote this book for two audiences\u2014one was the person, who\u2019s trying to figure out what to do with their lives\u2014the second was for people who <em>work<\/em> with people who are trying to figure out what to do with their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That would be parents, by the way!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> Yes. I actually think that the latter audience is, in some ways, more important to me, right here, than the other because, if you don\u2019t know what to do with your life\u2014particularly, if you\u2019re younger\u2014you may never pick up this book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you\u2019re somebody who actually is paying attention to helping somebody figure out what to do with their life, you\u2019re always looking for tools and resources. Well, this book is for you: You may be a college professor, or a pastor, or a youth worker \/ you may work in a college ministry; you may be a counselor; you may just be somebody in a company and you see a younger person, who\u2019s been hired recently, and you think: \u201cYou know, they have potential. But they <em>really<\/em> need to figure out who they are,\u201d\u2014you kind of have a heart for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, this is a tool that you can use. In the back of the book, there\u2019s an exercise which, frankly, is an abridged version of a much larger exercise on my website that will help you take somebody through this process of telling stories and looking for patterns.
