Stay tuned.<\/p>\n<p>And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition. I was looking at the Table of Contents for our guest\u2019s, Jerry Bridges\u2019, book, <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>\u2014because one of the sins that comes up regularly, when we talk about Christians, is the sin of gluttony. It doesn\u2019t get preached on very much\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did it make Jerry\u2019s list?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought it was off the list\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> It is self-control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> There it is\u2014\u201cLack of Self-control\u201d\u2014yes, Chapter 13. So, I\u2019m just not going to read that chapter and skip over it and go on to the rest; is that okay?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Is that what you want to do with it, in the presence of Jerry?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I guess not\u2014I guess not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Maybe, we need to talk about that one, off the top, Jerry. Jerry Bridges joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jerry, welcome back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Thank you. It\u2019s good to be back with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He is the author of a new book called <em>Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate<\/em>. And I guess I just kind of want to know\u2014because I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve really touched on it\u2014what motivated you to write this in the first place?\u00a0 I mean, did you finally get enough of the lack of authenticity among the evangelical community and what you\u2019re seeing among Christians today?\u00a0 Why write this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, over the last, I would say, half-dozen years, I\u2019ve become increasingly concerned about the tendency of Christians to define sin in terms of the flagrant sins out in society\u2014the homosexuality, the abortion, the drug dealing, the easy divorce\u2014these kinds of things\u2014and, meanwhile, just ignore our own sins. It\u2019s not that those sins in society are not serious\u2014they certainly are\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014but, in confronting those sins, it\u2019s easy to slip into a sort of a self-righteous frame of mind and be condemnatory toward those people out there and not see our own sins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about this issue of self-control, then. I mean, obviously, this has to be at the core of all of them as part of the fruit of the Spirit\u2014love, joy, peace, patience\u2026 self-control. It\u2019s one of the things God\u2019s at work, in all of our lives, creating. How does it manifest itself?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, the lack of self-control can be in several areas. It can be in our use of food. I think of a friend of mine\u2014and this is no longer true of him\u2014but he used to drink 12 cans of pop a day. I mean, he was just\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say he was addicted, but he just went after it. And so, in my own case, years ago, it was ice cream. And I still\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, wait a second.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I\u2019m down to four or five cans of pop a day, but ice cream is where you stepped on Dennis\u2019s toes here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I actually\u2014I\u2019m a whole lot better than I used to be. I used to think it was a human right\u2014one of the basic rights of living in America to end every day with a bowl of ice cream\u2014sometimes, littered with Oreos \/ other times with almonds and chocolate cascading over the edge. Excuse me while I leave the studio for a few moments\u2014but, seriously, ice cream was one of mine. That was one of yours too?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That was one of mine. But the thing I began to notice was that\u2014well, God\u2014first of all, the Holy Spirit began to speak to me\u2014began to convict me and my conscience that I was not exercising self-control\u2014that I was just letting it run wild, so to speak. And so, then, I began to try to pull back. I noticed that when I would indulge, then, impure thoughts or something like that would follow very frequently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I realized I cannot pick and choose the areas in which I am going to exercise self-control: \u201cI want to exercise self-control in my thought life, but I will indulge ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, wait a second. How can impure thoughts be tied to a bowl of ice cream?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> It\u2019s because we\u2019ve let it breach in the wall of our self-control. A man who lacks self-control is like a city whose walls are broken down\u2014the food, and drink, and ice cream\u2014that\u2019s just one area. Another area can be temper, finances\u2014people who just spend money without regard. I mention in the book that one of our national radio speakers mentioned, one day, that the average credit card debt in American households is $7,000\u2014that\u2019s just the average. To me, that\u2019s unthinkable\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014that people would just buy whatever they want; and they\u2019ll just pay a little bit every month, and so forth\u2014and their debt just mounts up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to brag on my wife here for a second because, as we\u2019re talking about this, she is in the midst of a fast. She decided, on Sunday, that she was going to go a week without the internet. Now, I said, \u201cCompletely without the internet for a week?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cI am going to check my email on the home computer, from time to time, just so that I am aware of communication.\u201d\u00a0 But she said: \u201cOther than that, I am not going to surf the web. I\u2019m not going to read the blogs that I normally read. I\u2019m just going to stay away.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cBecause I feel like I\u2019ve been wasting time on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, she\u2019s imposing this weeklong fast in an attempt to exercise authority over her own appetites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s really what we're talking about here; isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly. And you\u2019ve picked a very good one because I think that it\u2019s become a real issue with people. They can just spend hours at the computer, surfing the net.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wish I hadn\u2019t picked it\u2014I wish she hadn\u2019t picked it because now I\u2019m starting to feel convicted. I\u2019m thinking maybe the next day\u2014I might go a day and just see how I do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Just a day?\u00a0 Well, you know, usually, Bob, we take the month of August, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and we have what we call, Jerry, \u201cTurn off the TV Fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s a fast from TV for the month of August. This year, we decided not to do it. And some of my adult children have come back and said, \u201cNow, Dad, are you turning off\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had the same conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you really?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> My son, David, said, \u201cAre we doing the fast thing this month?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 And it\u2019s almost like he was a little disappointed that we weren\u2019t going to do it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And Jerry, to your point about this\u2014and as well to Bob\u2019s\u2014I think there is something good about this\u2014about getting out of a habit\u2014like watching television, getting on the internet\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014eating ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014eating ice cream. And for me, Bob, it\u2019s not that I\u2019ve moved from ice cream to some other kind of addiction here; but I\u2019d have to say television can be, for me, a temptation to just kind of check out\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014veg out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and veg out. I really have to watch it. I have to be careful\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have to watch it so that you don\u2019t watch it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Don\u2019t watch it\u2014exactly!\u00a0 I was walking by our television, the other night. I\u2019ve got a little saying above the top of it\u2014it\u2019s from Psalm 101, verse 3: \u201cI will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away. It shall not fasten its grip on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That\u2019s very good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think what we\u2019re talking about here is giving up something so that the grip is loosened\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and we can reflect on how much of a grip it had on our lives. While we\u2019re talking about a grip, let\u2019s talk about a big one\u2014and I think this is huge, within the Christian community\u2014it\u2019s the general topic that you write about in your book, \u201cworldliness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think this is a huge sin?\u00a0 Am I the only one that thinks this is huge, within the Christian community?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s a huge thing because, again, we have defined worldliness in terms of the biggies out there. I define worldliness in two ways: First of all, from<\/p>\n<p>1 Corinthians 7:31: \u201cThose who use the things in the world as if not engrossed in them\u201d\u2014and worldliness is just simply being engrossed in the things in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another practical meaning is just going along with the culture around us as long as that culture is not obviously sinful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jerry, some people think that anything that is in the world is worldly. So, they will say, \u201cWell, if you play cards, you\u2019re being worldly,\u201d or \u201cIf you dance, you\u2019re being worldly,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s a square dance, or a ballroom dance, or whatever. There are some who try to isolate themselves from the world in order not to be worldly. That\u2019s not what you\u2019re suggesting here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> No, no\u2014not that at all. I\u2019m talking about just going along with the things in society. Paul says, \u201cDon\u2019t become engrossed in the things of this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, a big one\u2014and this is one I had to struggle with, and it still can creep back in\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>11:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014is sports. Now, I realize I\u2019m walking in where angels fear to tread when I talk about sports\u2014especially football, basketball, maybe even baseball for some; but the two biggies are football and basketball.<\/p>\n<p>I happen to come from a school that has a very successful football program\u2014over the years, they\u2019ve won seven national championships. They won the first one when I was a junior there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> What school is this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> University of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want you to be able to do a little cheerleading for your alma mater there. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re feeding his idolatry here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> But, you know, it\u2019s\u2014and I remember when God first convicted me of this, several years ago\u2014and this can show you how insidious it is. It was toward the end of the season\u2014and my responses were, \u201cWell, Lord, let's way until the season is over.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of women, listening to us right now, saying, \u201cYou know, when he started talking about modesty, I just didn\u2019t care for that\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014but now that you\u2019re talking about sports\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThere you go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014go, \u201cSpeak, Jerry, speak!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> And the same way with the men when we were talking about the way women dress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, there you go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay. So, basically, I\u2019ve had to just back off. The way I have attacked this is to say: \u201cIt\u2019s just a game. At the end of the day, I don\u2019t think God is glorified, regardless of who wins the Super Bowl, or the Bowl Championship Game, or the Orange Bowl, or whatever it happens to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if the Sooners are on TV\u2014you\u2019ll still watch?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Probably not\u2014no, because it just feeds that thing. I\u2019ll read about it in the paper the next day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you would say to someone who does watch, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean that you\u2019re worldly for watching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly. Some people can watch the game, and it\u2019s just a game. Actually, the way I\u2019m cut out, I cannot watch any game for five minutes without taking sides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It can be South Carolina versus VMI [Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019re going to root for somebody.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to root for one of those teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> As we\u2019ve been talking about this, I keep coming back to 1 John, Chapter 2, where John says, \u201cDo not love the world or the things in the world.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s really the issue: \u201cDo we <em>love <\/em>the world?\u00a0 Is our affection, which ought to be exclusively for God, being given to temporal things?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re really talking about idolatry here; aren\u2019t we?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> We are, yes. And you brought out that our affection, which ought to be for God\u2014back in the 19<sup>th <\/sup>century, the Scotsman, Thomas Chalmers, preached a famous sermon called \u201cThe Expulsive Power of a New Affection.\u201d\u00a0 What he brings out is\u2014you cannot just say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do that,\u201d or you can\u2019t say, \u201cBob, you shouldn\u2019t do that,\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got to replace it with another affection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, to me, that\u2019s where the gospel comes in. I get so excited about the gospel that I say, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t want to do these things. I want to concentrate over here with You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You just talk about the gospel all the time; don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That\u2019s the <em>only<\/em> message\u2014I mean, everything has got to flow out of the gospel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is one other area of worldliness that we haven\u2019t touched on here\u2014that I think is a creeping cancer, within the Christian community\u2014and that\u2019s how we handle our finances, and our love of things, and our comparison of what we have with what other people have\u2014what we drive with what they drive, the schools our kids go to, and where our friends send their kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> The whole Joneses-thing you\u2019re talking about?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s huge. I think within there\u2014I think there is what you refer to, in your book, as idolatry; is that right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, it is idolatry; yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our materialism is idolatry because it\u2019s taking the place of God. Anything that\u2019s more important than our relationship with God is idolatry. Again, because materialism seems so respectable\u2014I mean, everybody is into the game\u2014you\u2019ve got to have this new car with all the bells and whistles that your old car didn\u2019t have\u2014and these kinds of things. We\u2019re into that; and as a result, it shows up in our giving patterns.<\/p>\n<p>I quote statistics that the overall population of America gives less than 2 percent of their income to any charitable cause\u2014whether it\u2019s United Way, the Red Cross, or their local church, or whatever. You\u2019d think that Christians would be better, but we give about 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that the issue of whether tithing is a New Testament thing or not\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>16:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014there\u2019s disagreement on both sides of that issue\u2014and I respect that\u2014but I come back to the fact\u2014if God required the Jews, who didn\u2019t have the gospel revelation that we have, and they were still offering burnt offerings and this kind of thing\u2014and yet, they were to give 10 percent. Now, we have the gospel\u2014we have Christ crucified, and risen again, and ascended, and sitting at the right hand of God. We have our sins forgiven. We are clothed in His righteousness; see?\u00a0 And Paul says, \u201cSet your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, in spite of all that we have, we\u2019re into this. We are\u2014I think I can safely say\u2014we are the wealthiest nation in all of history, per capita. We are the wealthiest nation in all of history; and yet we are so stingy toward God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To give 4 percent of our income to God\u2014that\u2019s scandalous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you talk about that, I think about the Prophet Haggai, who came to the nation of Israel as they were rebuilding Jerusalem, following their exile into Babylon. He said, \u201cGod wants to know about your paneled houses that you\u2019re building, while the temple is in ruins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a picture of people who are more concerned about their own comfort than about the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And we might be guilty of that very same thing; don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, yes; absolutely. Again, I think, for me, tithing is simply a benchmark. It\u2019s not a legalistic thing, but it\u2019s a benchmark. In fact, I would say that many, many Christians should be giving way beyond the 10 percent because they can afford to do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If a person making, say, $40,000 a year can give $4,000, a person making $400,000 should be able to give more than $40,000; but they don\u2019t\u2014their lifestyle just increases. The cars get more expensive and these kinds of things.<\/p>\n<p>The point I want to make is\u2014if every Christian just gave 10 percent of their income, we wouldn\u2019t know what to do with all the money. I mean, you know\u2014there would not be any\u2014I\u2019m sure you men are like me\u2014you get requests for funds all the time. You say, \u201cOh, I wish I could respond to that,\u201d kind of thing. I really believe, if all Christians gave 10 percent, all of these needs would be met.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there would be a lot of ministry taking place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you\u2019ve talked here, the real antidote for dealing with worldliness is found in Romans, Chapter 12:1-2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Presenting our bodies to God, totally\u2014sacrificially giving ourselves to His ownership, His authority, to be His bond slaves, and then, not being conformed to the world but being transformed by the renewing of our mind.<\/p>\n<p>And to this very subject here, you go to James, Chapter 1, verse 27, where the Scriptures challenge us to renew our mind about visiting the widow and the orphan in their distress. If you\u2019re struggling with materialism, find a way to go near an orphan\u2014to get close to those who only have what they are wearing\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and what\u2019s in their pockets and to somehow put your lifestyle back in perspective with the world scene because you\u2019re not going to find it watching cable TV in the evening or looking next door to your neighbor\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014that\u2019s not going to give you a right standard. That\u2019s the very point you\u2019re making about not being worldly.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, I have one last question for you. How do you think Oklahoma is going to do this year?\u00a0 [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re tempting him to sin there; aren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> You know, Dennis, I haven\u2019t even given it a thought! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think they could be in the contention for the\u2014\u201cYou better turn your TV on,\u201d is what I think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, you know, the last two years they have just stumbled badly. [Laughter]\u00a0 And, I don\u2019t know\u2014but I think God is causing them to do that just to help me get weaned off of it. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Thanks for being on our broadcast, Jerry. You\u2019re a good sport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And could I just ask, before we invite him back, can I get some steel-toed boots to wear?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow! I was looking at the Table of Contents for our guest\u2019s, Jerry Bridges\u2019, book, <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>\u2014because one of the sins that comes up regularly, when we talk about Christians, is the sin of gluttony. It doesn\u2019t get preached on very much\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did it make Jerry\u2019s list?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought it was off the list\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> It is self-control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> There it is\u2014\u201cLack of Self-control\u201d\u2014yes, Chapter 13. So, I\u2019m just not going to read that chapter and skip over it and go on to the rest; is that okay?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Is that what you want to do with it, in the presence of Jerry?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I guess not\u2014I guess not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Maybe, we need to talk about that one, off the top, Jerry. Jerry Bridges joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jerry, welcome back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Thank you. It\u2019s good to be back with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He is the author of a new book called <em>Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate<\/em>. And I guess I just kind of want to know\u2014because I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve really touched on it\u2014what motivated you to write this in the first place?\u00a0 I mean, did you finally get enough of the lack of authenticity among the evangelical community and what you\u2019re seeing among Christians today?\u00a0 Why write this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, over the last, I would say, half-dozen years, I\u2019ve become increasingly concerned about the tendency of Christians to define sin in terms of the flagrant sins out in society\u2014the homosexuality, the abortion, the drug dealing, the easy divorce\u2014these kinds of things\u2014and, meanwhile, just ignore our own sins. It\u2019s not that those sins in society are not serious\u2014they certainly are\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014but, in confronting those sins, it\u2019s easy to slip into a sort of a self-righteous frame of mind and be condemnatory toward those people out there and not see our own sins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about this issue of self-control, then. I mean, obviously, this has to be at the core of all of them as part of the fruit of the Spirit\u2014love, joy, peace, patience\u2026 self-control. It\u2019s one of the things God\u2019s at work, in all of our lives, creating. How does it manifest itself?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, the lack of self-control can be in several areas. It can be in our use of food. I think of a friend of mine\u2014and this is no longer true of him\u2014but he used to drink 12 cans of pop a day. I mean, he was just\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say he was addicted, but he just went after it. And so, in my own case, years ago, it was ice cream. And I still\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, wait a second.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I\u2019m down to four or five cans of pop a day, but ice cream is where you stepped on Dennis\u2019s toes here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I actually\u2014I\u2019m a whole lot better than I used to be. I used to think it was a human right\u2014one of the basic rights of living in America to end every day with a bowl of ice cream\u2014sometimes, littered with Oreos \/ other times with almonds and chocolate cascading over the edge. Excuse me while I leave the studio for a few moments\u2014but, seriously, ice cream was one of mine. That was one of yours too?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That was one of mine. But the thing I began to notice was that\u2014well, God\u2014first of all, the Holy Spirit began to speak to me\u2014began to convict me and my conscience that I was not exercising self-control\u2014that I was just letting it run wild, so to speak. And so, then, I began to try to pull back. I noticed that when I would indulge, then, impure thoughts or something like that would follow very frequently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I realized I cannot pick and choose the areas in which I am going to exercise self-control: \u201cI want to exercise self-control in my thought life, but I will indulge ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, wait a second. How can impure thoughts be tied to a bowl of ice cream?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> It\u2019s because we\u2019ve let it breach in the wall of our self-control. A man who lacks self-control is like a city whose walls are broken down\u2014the food, and drink, and ice cream\u2014that\u2019s just one area. Another area can be temper, finances\u2014people who just spend money without regard. I mention in the book that one of our national radio speakers mentioned, one day, that the average credit card debt in American households is $7,000\u2014that\u2019s just the average. To me, that\u2019s unthinkable\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014that people would just buy whatever they want; and they\u2019ll just pay a little bit every month, and so forth\u2014and their debt just mounts up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to brag on my wife here for a second because, as we\u2019re talking about this, she is in the midst of a fast. She decided, on Sunday, that she was going to go a week without the internet. Now, I said, \u201cCompletely without the internet for a week?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cI am going to check my email on the home computer, from time to time, just so that I am aware of communication.\u201d\u00a0 But she said: \u201cOther than that, I am not going to surf the web. I\u2019m not going to read the blogs that I normally read. I\u2019m just going to stay away.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cBecause I feel like I\u2019ve been wasting time on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, she\u2019s imposing this weeklong fast in an attempt to exercise authority over her own appetites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s really what we're talking about here; isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly. And you\u2019ve picked a very good one because I think that it\u2019s become a real issue with people. They can just spend hours at the computer, surfing the net.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wish I hadn\u2019t picked it\u2014I wish she hadn\u2019t picked it because now I\u2019m starting to feel convicted. I\u2019m thinking maybe the next day\u2014I might go a day and just see how I do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Just a day?\u00a0 Well, you know, usually, Bob, we take the month of August, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and we have what we call, Jerry, \u201cTurn off the TV Fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s a fast from TV for the month of August. This year, we decided not to do it. And some of my adult children have come back and said, \u201cNow, Dad, are you turning off\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had the same conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you really?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> My son, David, said, \u201cAre we doing the fast thing this month?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 And it\u2019s almost like he was a little disappointed that we weren\u2019t going to do it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And Jerry, to your point about this\u2014and as well to Bob\u2019s\u2014I think there is something good about this\u2014about getting out of a habit\u2014like watching television, getting on the internet\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014eating ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014eating ice cream. And for me, Bob, it\u2019s not that I\u2019ve moved from ice cream to some other kind of addiction here; but I\u2019d have to say television can be, for me, a temptation to just kind of check out\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014veg out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and veg out. I really have to watch it. I have to be careful\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have to watch it so that you don\u2019t watch it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Don\u2019t watch it\u2014exactly!\u00a0 I was walking by our television, the other night. I\u2019ve got a little saying above the top of it\u2014it\u2019s from Psalm 101, verse 3: \u201cI will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away. It shall not fasten its grip on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That\u2019s very good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think what we\u2019re talking about here is giving up something so that the grip is loosened\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and we can reflect on how much of a grip it had on our lives. While we\u2019re talking about a grip, let\u2019s talk about a big one\u2014and I think this is huge, within the Christian community\u2014it\u2019s the general topic that you write about in your book, \u201cworldliness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think this is a huge sin?\u00a0 Am I the only one that thinks this is huge, within the Christian community?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s a huge thing because, again, we have defined worldliness in terms of the biggies out there. I define worldliness in two ways: First of all, from<\/p>\n<p>1 Corinthians 7:31: \u201cThose who use the things in the world as if not engrossed in them\u201d\u2014and worldliness is just simply being engrossed in the things in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another practical meaning is just going along with the culture around us as long as that culture is not obviously sinful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jerry, some people think that anything that is in the world is worldly. So, they will say, \u201cWell, if you play cards, you\u2019re being worldly,\u201d or \u201cIf you dance, you\u2019re being worldly,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s a square dance, or a ballroom dance, or whatever. There are some who try to isolate themselves from the world in order not to be worldly. That\u2019s not what you\u2019re suggesting here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> No, no\u2014not that at all. I\u2019m talking about just going along with the things in society. Paul says, \u201cDon\u2019t become engrossed in the things of this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, a big one\u2014and this is one I had to struggle with, and it still can creep back in\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>11:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014is sports. Now, I realize I\u2019m walking in where angels fear to tread when I talk about sports\u2014especially football, basketball, maybe even baseball for some; but the two biggies are football and basketball.<\/p>\n<p>I happen to come from a school that has a very successful football program\u2014over the years, they\u2019ve won seven national championships. They won the first one when I was a junior there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> What school is this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> University of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want you to be able to do a little cheerleading for your alma mater there. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re feeding his idolatry here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> But, you know, it\u2019s\u2014and I remember when God first convicted me of this, several years ago\u2014and this can show you how insidious it is. It was toward the end of the season\u2014and my responses were, \u201cWell, Lord, let's way until the season is over.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of women, listening to us right now, saying, \u201cYou know, when he started talking about modesty, I just didn\u2019t care for that\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014but now that you\u2019re talking about sports\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThere you go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014go, \u201cSpeak, Jerry, speak!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> And the same way with the men when we were talking about the way women dress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, there you go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay. So, basically, I\u2019ve had to just back off. The way I have attacked this is to say: \u201cIt\u2019s just a game. At the end of the day, I don\u2019t think God is glorified, regardless of who wins the Super Bowl, or the Bowl Championship Game, or the Orange Bowl, or whatever it happens to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if the Sooners are on TV\u2014you\u2019ll still watch?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Probably not\u2014no, because it just feeds that thing. I\u2019ll read about it in the paper the next day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you would say to someone who does watch, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean that you\u2019re worldly for watching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly. Some people can watch the game, and it\u2019s just a game. Actually, the way I\u2019m cut out, I cannot watch any game for five minutes without taking sides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It can be South Carolina versus VMI [Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019re going to root for somebody.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to root for one of those teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> As we\u2019ve been talking about this, I keep coming back to 1 John, Chapter 2, where John says, \u201cDo not love the world or the things in the world.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s really the issue: \u201cDo we <em>love <\/em>the world?\u00a0 Is our affection, which ought to be exclusively for God, being given to temporal things?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re really talking about idolatry here; aren\u2019t we?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> We are, yes. And you brought out that our affection, which ought to be for God\u2014back in the 19<sup>th <\/sup>century, the Scotsman, Thomas Chalmers, preached a famous sermon called \u201cThe Expulsive Power of a New Affection.\u201d\u00a0 What he brings out is\u2014you cannot just say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do that,\u201d or you can\u2019t say, \u201cBob, you shouldn\u2019t do that,\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got to replace it with another affection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, to me, that\u2019s where the gospel comes in. I get so excited about the gospel that I say, \u201cLord, I don\u2019t want to do these things. I want to concentrate over here with You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You just talk about the gospel all the time; don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> That\u2019s the <em>only<\/em> message\u2014I mean, everything has got to flow out of the gospel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is one other area of worldliness that we haven\u2019t touched on here\u2014that I think is a creeping cancer, within the Christian community\u2014and that\u2019s how we handle our finances, and our love of things, and our comparison of what we have with what other people have\u2014what we drive with what they drive, the schools our kids go to, and where our friends send their kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> The whole Joneses-thing you\u2019re talking about?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s huge. I think within there\u2014I think there is what you refer to, in your book, as idolatry; is that right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, it is idolatry; yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our materialism is idolatry because it\u2019s taking the place of God. Anything that\u2019s more important than our relationship with God is idolatry. Again, because materialism seems so respectable\u2014I mean, everybody is into the game\u2014you\u2019ve got to have this new car with all the bells and whistles that your old car didn\u2019t have\u2014and these kinds of things. We\u2019re into that; and as a result, it shows up in our giving patterns.<\/p>\n<p>I quote statistics that the overall population of America gives less than 2 percent of their income to any charitable cause\u2014whether it\u2019s United Way, the Red Cross, or their local church, or whatever. You\u2019d think that Christians would be better, but we give about 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that the issue of whether tithing is a New Testament thing or not\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>16:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014there\u2019s disagreement on both sides of that issue\u2014and I respect that\u2014but I come back to the fact\u2014if God required the Jews, who didn\u2019t have the gospel revelation that we have, and they were still offering burnt offerings and this kind of thing\u2014and yet, they were to give 10 percent. Now, we have the gospel\u2014we have Christ crucified, and risen again, and ascended, and sitting at the right hand of God. We have our sins forgiven. We are clothed in His righteousness; see?\u00a0 And Paul says, \u201cSet your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, in spite of all that we have, we\u2019re into this. We are\u2014I think I can safely say\u2014we are the wealthiest nation in all of history, per capita. We are the wealthiest nation in all of history; and yet we are so stingy toward God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To give 4 percent of our income to God\u2014that\u2019s scandalous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you talk about that, I think about the Prophet Haggai, who came to the nation of Israel as they were rebuilding Jerusalem, following their exile into Babylon. He said, \u201cGod wants to know about your paneled houses that you\u2019re building, while the temple is in ruins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a picture of people who are more concerned about their own comfort than about the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And we might be guilty of that very same thing; don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, yes; absolutely. Again, I think, for me, tithing is simply a benchmark. It\u2019s not a legalistic thing, but it\u2019s a benchmark. In fact, I would say that many, many Christians should be giving way beyond the 10 percent because they can afford to do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If a person making, say, $40,000 a year can give $4,000, a person making $400,000 should be able to give more than $40,000; but they don\u2019t\u2014their lifestyle just increases. The cars get more expensive and these kinds of things.<\/p>\n<p>The point I want to make is\u2014if every Christian just gave 10 percent of their income, we wouldn\u2019t know what to do with all the money. I mean, you know\u2014there would not be any\u2014I\u2019m sure you men are like me\u2014you get requests for funds all the time. You say, \u201cOh, I wish I could respond to that,\u201d kind of thing. I really believe, if all Christians gave 10 percent, all of these needs would be met.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there would be a lot of ministry taking place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you\u2019ve talked here, the real antidote for dealing with worldliness is found in Romans, Chapter 12:1-2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Presenting our bodies to God, totally\u2014sacrificially giving ourselves to His ownership, His authority, to be His bond slaves, and then, not being conformed to the world but being transformed by the renewing of our mind.<\/p>\n<p>And to this very subject here, you go to James, Chapter 1, verse 27, where the Scriptures challenge us to renew our mind about visiting the widow and the orphan in their distress. If you\u2019re struggling with materialism, find a way to go near an orphan\u2014to get close to those who only have what they are wearing\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and what\u2019s in their pockets and to somehow put your lifestyle back in perspective with the world scene because you\u2019re not going to find it watching cable TV in the evening or looking next door to your neighbor\u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>20:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014that\u2019s not going to give you a right standard. That\u2019s the very point you\u2019re making about not being worldly.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, I have one last question for you. How do you think Oklahoma is going to do this year?\u00a0 [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re tempting him to sin there; aren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> You know, Dennis, I haven\u2019t even given it a thought! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think they could be in the contention for the\u2014\u201cYou better turn your TV on,\u201d is what I think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, you know, the last two years they have just stumbled badly. [Laughter]\u00a0 And, I don\u2019t know\u2014but I think God is causing them to do that just to help me get weaned off of it. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Thanks for being on our broadcast, Jerry. You\u2019re a good sport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And could I just ask, before we invite him back, can I get some steel-toed boots to wear?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow! Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, your toes do get stepped on; but the reality is\u2014if you want to be like Jesus, we\u2019re going to have to address some of this stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21:00<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got to wake up to it. We\u2019ve got to be willing to respond to what the Scriptures say about what it means to live a righteous and godly life\u2014to pursue righteousness and godliness in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>And I want to encourage our listeners to get a copy of the book that Jerry has written.
