At the risk of embarrassing our guest today, you know the name J.C. Ryle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He is the Anglican bishop who lived more than 100 years ago in England, who wrote a number of books that we still read and benefit from today. I have often wondered, \u201cWhose books, that are being written today, will still be read 100 years from now and will be appreciated the way Bishop Ryle\u2019s books are?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I have to tell you that I think my grandchildren may be talking about this guy, who lived way back in the late 1900s, in the earliest part of the 21<sup>st <\/sup>century\u2014this guy named Jerry Bridges. I think they may still be reading books like <em>The Pursuit of Holiness<\/em> or <em>The Practice of Godliness<\/em> or the book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we\u2019re going to talk about today, <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>. I think these books may stand the test of time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right, Bob. And Jerry was on our broadcast about a decade ago, and his Christian life has withstood the test of time\u2014with tongue in cheek I say that. He's been on staff with the Navigators for more than 53 years\u2014has been a faithful steward of the gospel. It is fun to have you back in the studio, Jerry. Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, thank you, Dennis. It\u2019s a privilege to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You have written this book called <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>. I\u2019m with Bob\u2014I think a number of your books are going to withstand the test of time. And I just have to ask you\u2014this was one of the questions I was looking forward to asking you about this\u2014in your lifetime, how have you seen the concept of sin change?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, I would say that, with all of the increase in the flagrant sins out in society\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the abortion, homosexuality, the drug dealing, and the easy divorce, and these kinds of things\u2014that the Christian community has that as their target: \u201cThat\u2019s sin.\u201d\u00a0 And they don\u2019t see their gossip, and their pride, and their jealousy as sin. I would say that's been a big thing\u2014in other words, society has gone downhill. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that Romans\u2014the latter half of Romans, Chapter 1, from verse 18 on\u2014\u201cGod gave them up\u2026. God gave them up\u2026. God gave them up,\u201d is so descriptive of what we see in society today. And so, those of us, who are believers, can look at that and fail to see our own sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A.W. Tozer, who was another great writer, said that he believed the low view of God has given birth to a low view of sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Absolutely. Yes, I agree with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite passages of Scripture is Isaiah\u2019s vision of the holiness of God in Isaiah, Chapter 6. Isaiah was a good man. He had access to the kings. He was part of the Jewish elite\u2014these kinds of things\u2014and yet, when he saw the holiness of God, he said, \u201cWoe is me!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter\u2014after Jesus had told him to cast his net on the right side and get this <em>huge<\/em> catch of fish\u2014we might say: \u201cWell, Jesus, I\u2019ll sign you up. You be our fishing guide, and we\u2019ll give you half the profit,\u201d or something like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> He fell on his face and said, \u201cDepart from me, God, for I am a sinful man.\u201d\u00a0 So, when we see God as He really is\u2014and that\u2019s what he saw\u2014he saw the sovereign power of God in Jesus that day, and it scared him. And, well, I would say today\u2014I would say one of the characteristics of our society \/ our Christian society today is there is no fear of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy that, as you know, that doesn\u2019t mean to be afraid of God. It does mean to have a very reverent awe of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019d say that characterizes the evangelical community?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I would say so\u2014yes. We want God to be our buddy. God rebukes the nation of Israel in Psalm 50. He said, \u201cYou thought that I was altogether like you\u201d; and so, we make God in our own image. We know He\u2019s more powerful, He knows more, and so forth, but basically\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Bible does teach there is an eminent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014relationship that we can have with a holy God; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. This has to be both the transcendence and the eminence, and the transcendence has been lost.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it's interesting that you talked about how we tend to look at these manifestations of sin in the culture and say, \u201cLook at how bad things are\u201d; and we fail to see sin patterns in our own lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a little reminiscent of Luke 18, where the Pharisee looks around and says, \u201cI thank You that I am not like other men.\u201d\u00a0 Is that what we\u2019ve become; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I think so. In fact, I would say you go one step further. I don\u2019t even think that they\u2019re thanking God. Now, I don\u2019t think that he was really thankful to God\u2014I think that was just an expression. Basically, what he was saying is: \u201cGod, look how good I am. I don\u2019t do this, this, that, and so forth\u2014and, you know\u2014especially, this tax collector over here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You tell a story in the book, <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>, about a meeting of a group of church leaders or pastors, where there was a time of confession of sin. The sins that were being confessed were all other people\u2019s sins; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right, yes. Actually, the story was\u2014this pastor called a prayer meeting for men in the church. He was fairly new in the church; and so, he wanted to get acquainted with the men and called this prayer meeting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just said, \u201cLet\u2019s pray around.\u201d He told me that every man, without exception, prayed about the sins in the culture\u2014none of them prayed about their own sins \/ none of them prayed about the ministry of the church\u2014they were just so concerned. When it finally came to him, his closing prayer was, \u201cGod, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, really. As we talk about this\u2014this whole concept of kind of what\u2019s happened with sin in our Christian community today\u2014I think there are really two reasons why this has occurred, and we talked about one. There has been a reduction of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We no longer talk about who God is\u2014in terms of His glory, the greatness of God, a God to be feared\u2014as you\u2019ve just mentioned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think there is a second thing that you touch on in your book, and I think we\u2019ve forgotten the definition of sin\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of what sin is in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How would you define sin for a layman or woman or a young man or woman who is listening to this today, who\u2019d go: \u201cWhat\u2019s the big deal about sin?\u00a0 I mean, why even have this conversation?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, I use four words to describe sin, and they\u2019re all biblical words. In 1 John 4, he says, \u201cSin is lawlessness\u201d; and that word is a very strong word. It doesn\u2019t mean just getting a traffic ticket\u2014it means somebody who just persistently violates the law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s say that there is somebody out here and he is just, every day, getting picked up for speeding in the school zone. Well, pretty soon, he\u2019s out\u2014he\u2019s lost his license. Of course, the next day, he\u2019s out driving without his license. And John says that\u2019s what sin is\u2014it is utter disregard for the law of God. We don\u2019t like to think that, but that\u2019s the term he uses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Ten Commandments really aren\u2019t in vogue today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We don\u2019t hear much discussion about them at all. In fact, our mutual friend, Bill Bright, when he was alive, used to talk a great deal about the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule as really one of the keys to being able to live a fruitful life that\u2019s well-pleasing to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, right. So, the second word, then, that\u2019s found in the Bible, is the word, \u201ctransgression\u201d\u2014which doesn\u2019t mean anything to the average person\u2014except the definition of that word is: rebellion against authority. And so, when we sin, we are, in effect, rebelling against the sovereign authority of the Creator of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the third word is the word, \u201cdespise\u201d; and that\u2019s the word the Prophet Nathan used when he confronted David about his sin of adultery and, essentially, murder\u2014having Bathsheba\u2019s husband killed in battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou\u2019ve despised the Word of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 And then, God puts His words in Nathan\u2019s mouth\u2014He says, \u201cAnd you have despised Me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you stop and think about that, when I gossip\u2014when I tell a little lie, exaggerate, or something like that\u2014in effect, I am despising God \/ I am despising His Word\u2014I am despising Him. In effect, I am saying: \u201cGod, in this instance, I don\u2019t want to live like You.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be like You. I want to do my thing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the fourth word\u2014and this one is really a tough one\u2014it\u2019s the word, \u201cdefiance.\u201d\u00a0 Now, in some translations, it\u2019s used\u2014\u201cSins with a high hand\u201d\u2014kind of your fist in the air against God\u2014an attitude of defiance. And so, when we intentionally sin, it\u2019s an attitude of defiance against God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you add the compounding effect of those four words, you can see that all sin\u2014be it ever so small or incidental in our eyes\u2014is very serious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you group all of that under the major heading of ungodliness?\u00a0 I know that\u2019s one of the things you talk about in your book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, interestingly, Bob, there is a distinction between ungodliness and unrighteousness or wickedness. Most people assume that ungodliness is synonymous with wickedness. But consistently, in the Bible, it talks about ungodliness and unrighteousness or pursuing godliness and holiness. So, there is a distinction. Godliness has to do with our attitude with respect to God. An ungodly person is a person who lives as if God doesn\u2019t exist. He may have said that he believes in God, but it has absolutely no impact in his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, we know\u2014all of us have nice respectable friends, who never give God a thought or, maybe, they go to church on Sunday\u2014sort of tip their hat to God, as we would have said in the old days\u2014but, basically, they live as if God is totally irrelevant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s\u2014there is this sense of which all sin is lawlessness \/ all sin is defying God. And so, that\u2019s what I want to help people to see. I\u2019m not saying that your gossip is as bad as murder or abortion, but I\u2019m saying your gossip is sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and an offense before a holy God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Offense before a holy God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I come back to, many times, Psalm 51 and David\u2019s acknowledgement, after he has had Uriah killed and after he has committed adultery with Bathsheba. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says what?\u2014\u201cAgainst You and You only have I sinned.\u201d\u00a0 We have to have that right perspective before we really see the sinfulness of our sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Jerry, I don\u2019t want to leave people with just the conviction that they are falling under, at this point, wherever they are on the spectrum\u2014whether one of the bigger sins\u2014like adultery, like abortion \/ the taking of a human life\u2014or that of discontentment, and griping, and complaining, et cetera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s go back to those four manifestations of sin that you talked about. Would you just, real practically, explain to our listeners\u2014if they tend to deal with lawlessness, how do they deal with that?\u00a0 If they tend to be filled with rebellion against God \/ defying God, how do you deal with that?\u00a0 If you despise God and the Scriptures, how do we deal with that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the fourth one\u2014ultimately, defying God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re basically asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the antidote for sin?\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly, I am because I think, at this point, we\u2019ve talked about it. I think people go, \u201cYou got me.\u201d\u00a0 So, I don\u2019t want to leave them\u2014I don\u2019t want to leave them just grappling with their sin. Give us a way out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay, and the way out is the gospel. That\u2019s why Chapter 4 in the book is the gospel. I have determined, Dennis, that I will never preach or teach another convicting message\u2014or, that is, a message that\u2019s designed to convict people without giving them the hope of the gospel. I don\u2019t want people to go out, leaving my meeting with a big burden on their shoulders. I want them to go out, in the words of John Newton, \u201cI am a great sinner, but I have a great Savior.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I believe\u2014and this is something that came to me, back in about 1979. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPrior to that, I would say my ministry was characterized by the word, \u201cought\u201d: \u201cYou <em>ought<\/em> to do this,\u201d \u201cYou <em>ought<\/em> not to do that,\u201d and so forth. I saw the bankruptcy\u2014God helped me to see the bankruptcy of that in my own life and in seeing people around me. I believe that the gospel is the greatest motivator for wanting to deal with sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot only that, if I know that my sin has been forgiven\u2014and I\u2019m talking about a judicial forgiveness by God so that He has forgiven us of our sin and He\u2019s clothed us with the righteousness of Christ\u2014then, I am freed up to face my sin. If I don\u2019t believe God has forgiven me, then, I have to live in denial about it because I can\u2019t stand that prospect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or paying penance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Paying penance for something like that. So, the solution to this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014first of all, we have to face the fact that we are sinners\u2014and that, not only have we sinned, we\u2019re just flat-out sinners. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember an incident I talk about vaguely in the book where God used one specific instance of selfishness\u2014a very subtle instance in my life\u2014and reminded me of that. Then, the Holy Spirit helped me to see that that was not an isolated instance. Then, I thought, \u201cI am a selfish person.\u201d\u00a0 That really hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, you see, I can come to God and realize that Jesus died, not only for my sins, but for my iniquity\u2014my sinful nature\/my flesh\u2014all of that. He died for the guilt of that. He died for the pollution of that. And so, the gospel frees me up to face my sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gospel <em>motivates<\/em> me to want to deal with my sin and to want to live a life that\u2019s pleasing to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And let me read these verses that came to mind as you were explaining that. This is from Titus, Chapter 2\u2014and you know these verses: \u201cThe grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; who gave Himself up for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, who are zealous for good works.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s the effect of grace. And the gospel is the gospel of the grace of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. So, to the person, who is struggling with lawlessness and being a lawbreaker\u2014or another one, who says, \u201cI have despised God and the authority of Scripture,\u201d\u2014or another one: \u201cI've just been, outright, defying God, shaking my fist at Him for this circumstance,\u201d or \u201c\u2026that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026my lot in life,\u201d\u2014the place to turn is from self and from this condition to Jesus Christ and what He offers, which is absolute forgiveness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014forgiveness from all of the activities, and heart attitudes, and, as you\u2019ve said, the many, many ways we are even unconscious about God and living our lives without a thought of Him on a daily basis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then\u2014with that forgiveness comes transformation and hope. There, we have the offer of God: \u201cI can forgive your past. I can change your present, and I can give you a future.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And to that person, who doesn\u2019t know Christ like that\u2014who doesn't know right now that they are forgiven of their lawlessness, their rebellion, their defiance\u2014everything they've done\u2014you just cry out, \u201cLord, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Amen, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThank You for the cross of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I pray that prayer every morning: \u201cGod be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I quickly say, \u201cYou have been merciful, but I just want to acknowledge I live by Your mercy every day of my life.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I love the words in that old hymn: \u201cMy hope is built on nothing less than Jesus\u2019 blood and righteousness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just say one other thing, Dennis. I think that people\u2014when we talk about lawlessness, and rebellion, and defiance, their minds automatically go to the big sins\u2014but our gossip, and our jealousy, and our pride, and our anxiety, and so forth\u2014that\u2019s lawlessness \/ that\u2019s rebellion against God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I hope people will see\u2014will see the seriousness of even the respectable sins, which is an oxymoron, of course, but they are respectable to us\u2014but to see that, and then, to turn to God and to appreciate the gospel. Oftentimes, as you well know, it\u2019s the people who have really blown their life that love the gospel. I\u2019m saying there should not be that distinction\u2014every one of us should love the gospel!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I like the way you said it earlier. I mean, who among us is clean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I just appreciate you and what you\u2019ve said here. And, Bob, this would not only make a great book to read, but the truths contained in this would be excellent for a small group Bible study, which is what the Navigators do so well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like they\u2019re a sister organization with Campus Crusade for Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You guys have been kindred spirits about the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> We have been. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014gospel and the Great Commission for over five decades with Crusade. And I just have to ask you\u2014this was one of the questions I was looking forward to asking you about this\u2014in your lifetime, how have you seen the concept of sin change?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, I would say that, with all of the increase in the flagrant sins out in society\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the abortion, homosexuality, the drug dealing, and the easy divorce, and these kinds of things\u2014that the Christian community has that as their target: \u201cThat\u2019s sin.\u201d\u00a0 And they don\u2019t see their gossip, and their pride, and their jealousy as sin. I would say that's been a big thing\u2014in other words, society has gone downhill. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that Romans\u2014the latter half of Romans, Chapter 1, from verse 18 on\u2014\u201cGod gave them up\u2026. God gave them up\u2026. God gave them up,\u201d is so descriptive of what we see in society today. And so, those of us, who are believers, can look at that and fail to see our own sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A.W. Tozer, who was another great writer, said that he believed the low view of God has given birth to a low view of sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Absolutely. Yes, I agree with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of my favorite passages of Scripture is Isaiah\u2019s vision of the holiness of God in Isaiah, Chapter 6. Isaiah was a good man. He had access to the kings. He was part of the Jewish elite\u2014these kinds of things\u2014and yet, when he saw the holiness of God, he said, \u201cWoe is me!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter\u2014after Jesus had told him to cast his net on the right side and get this <em>huge<\/em> catch of fish\u2014we might say: \u201cWell, Jesus, I\u2019ll sign you up. You be our fishing guide, and we\u2019ll give you half the profit,\u201d or something like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> He fell on his face and said, \u201cDepart from me, God, for I am a sinful man.\u201d\u00a0 So, when we see God as He really is\u2014and that\u2019s what he saw\u2014he saw the sovereign power of God in Jesus that day, and it scared him. And, well, I would say today\u2014I would say one of the characteristics of our society \/ our Christian society today is there is no fear of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy that, as you know, that doesn\u2019t mean to be afraid of God. It does mean to have a very reverent awe of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019d say that characterizes the evangelical community?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I would say so\u2014yes. We want God to be our buddy. God rebukes the nation of Israel in Psalm 50. He said, \u201cYou thought that I was altogether like you\u201d; and so, we make God in our own image. We know He\u2019s more powerful, He knows more, and so forth, but basically\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The Bible does teach there is an eminent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014relationship that we can have with a holy God; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. This has to be both the transcendence and the eminence, and the transcendence has been lost.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it's interesting that you talked about how we tend to look at these manifestations of sin in the culture and say, \u201cLook at how bad things are\u201d; and we fail to see sin patterns in our own lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a little reminiscent of Luke 18, where the Pharisee looks around and says, \u201cI thank You that I am not like other men.\u201d\u00a0 Is that what we\u2019ve become; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I think so. In fact, I would say you go one step further. I don\u2019t even think that they\u2019re thanking God. Now, I don\u2019t think that he was really thankful to God\u2014I think that was just an expression. Basically, what he was saying is: \u201cGod, look how good I am. I don\u2019t do this, this, that, and so forth\u2014and, you know\u2014especially, this tax collector over here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You tell a story in the book, <em>Respectable Sins<\/em>, about a meeting of a group of church leaders or pastors, where there was a time of confession of sin. The sins that were being confessed were all other people\u2019s sins; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right, yes. Actually, the story was\u2014this pastor called a prayer meeting for men in the church. He was fairly new in the church; and so, he wanted to get acquainted with the men and called this prayer meeting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just said, \u201cLet\u2019s pray around.\u201d He told me that every man, without exception, prayed about the sins in the culture\u2014none of them prayed about their own sins \/ none of them prayed about the ministry of the church\u2014they were just so concerned. When it finally came to him, his closing prayer was, \u201cGod, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, really. As we talk about this\u2014this whole concept of kind of what\u2019s happened with sin in our Christian community today\u2014I think there are really two reasons why this has occurred, and we talked about one. There has been a reduction of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We no longer talk about who God is\u2014in terms of His glory, the greatness of God, a God to be feared\u2014as you\u2019ve just mentioned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think there is a second thing that you touch on in your book, and I think we\u2019ve forgotten the definition of sin\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of what sin is in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How would you define sin for a layman or woman or a young man or woman who is listening to this today, who\u2019d go: \u201cWhat\u2019s the big deal about sin?\u00a0 I mean, why even have this conversation?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, I use four words to describe sin, and they\u2019re all biblical words. In 1 John 4, he says, \u201cSin is lawlessness\u201d; and that word is a very strong word. It doesn\u2019t mean just getting a traffic ticket\u2014it means somebody who just persistently violates the law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s say that there is somebody out here and he is just, every day, getting picked up for speeding in the school zone. Well, pretty soon, he\u2019s out\u2014he\u2019s lost his license. Of course, the next day, he\u2019s out driving without his license. And John says that\u2019s what sin is\u2014it is utter disregard for the law of God. We don\u2019t like to think that, but that\u2019s the term he uses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Ten Commandments really aren\u2019t in vogue today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We don\u2019t hear much discussion about them at all. In fact, our mutual friend, Bill Bright, when he was alive, used to talk a great deal about the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule as really one of the keys to being able to live a fruitful life that\u2019s well-pleasing to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, right. So, the second word, then, that\u2019s found in the Bible, is the word, \u201ctransgression\u201d\u2014which doesn\u2019t mean anything to the average person\u2014except the definition of that word is: rebellion against authority. And so, when we sin, we are, in effect, rebelling against the sovereign authority of the Creator of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the third word is the word, \u201cdespise\u201d; and that\u2019s the word the Prophet Nathan used when he confronted David about his sin of adultery and, essentially, murder\u2014having Bathsheba\u2019s husband killed in battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou\u2019ve despised the Word of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 And then, God puts His words in Nathan\u2019s mouth\u2014He says, \u201cAnd you have despised Me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you stop and think about that, when I gossip\u2014when I tell a little lie, exaggerate, or something like that\u2014in effect, I am despising God \/ I am despising His Word\u2014I am despising Him. In effect, I am saying: \u201cGod, in this instance, I don\u2019t want to live like You.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be like You. I want to do my thing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the fourth word\u2014and this one is really a tough one\u2014it\u2019s the word, \u201cdefiance.\u201d\u00a0 Now, in some translations, it\u2019s used\u2014\u201cSins with a high hand\u201d\u2014kind of your fist in the air against God\u2014an attitude of defiance. And so, when we intentionally sin, it\u2019s an attitude of defiance against God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you add the compounding effect of those four words, you can see that all sin\u2014be it ever so small or incidental in our eyes\u2014is very serious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you group all of that under the major heading of ungodliness?\u00a0 I know that\u2019s one of the things you talk about in your book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Well, interestingly, Bob, there is a distinction between ungodliness and unrighteousness or wickedness. Most people assume that ungodliness is synonymous with wickedness. But consistently, in the Bible, it talks about ungodliness and unrighteousness or pursuing godliness and holiness. So, there is a distinction. Godliness has to do with our attitude with respect to God. An ungodly person is a person who lives as if God doesn\u2019t exist. He may have said that he believes in God, but it has absolutely no impact in his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, we know\u2014all of us have nice respectable friends, who never give God a thought or, maybe, they go to church on Sunday\u2014sort of tip their hat to God, as we would have said in the old days\u2014but, basically, they live as if God is totally irrelevant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s\u2014there is this sense of which all sin is lawlessness \/ all sin is defying God. And so, that\u2019s what I want to help people to see. I\u2019m not saying that your gossip is as bad as murder or abortion, but I\u2019m saying your gossip is sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and an offense before a holy God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Offense before a holy God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I come back to, many times, Psalm 51 and David\u2019s acknowledgement, after he has had Uriah killed and after he has committed adultery with Bathsheba. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says what?\u2014\u201cAgainst You and You only have I sinned.\u201d\u00a0 We have to have that right perspective before we really see the sinfulness of our sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Jerry, I don\u2019t want to leave people with just the conviction that they are falling under, at this point, wherever they are on the spectrum\u2014whether one of the bigger sins\u2014like adultery, like abortion \/ the taking of a human life\u2014or that of discontentment, and griping, and complaining, et cetera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s go back to those four manifestations of sin that you talked about. Would you just, real practically, explain to our listeners\u2014if they tend to deal with lawlessness, how do they deal with that?\u00a0 If they tend to be filled with rebellion against God \/ defying God, how do you deal with that?\u00a0 If you despise God and the Scriptures, how do we deal with that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the fourth one\u2014ultimately, defying God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re basically asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the antidote for sin?\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly, I am because I think, at this point, we\u2019ve talked about it. I think people go, \u201cYou got me.\u201d\u00a0 So, I don\u2019t want to leave them\u2014I don\u2019t want to leave them just grappling with their sin. Give us a way out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Okay, and the way out is the gospel. That\u2019s why Chapter 4 in the book is the gospel. I have determined, Dennis, that I will never preach or teach another convicting message\u2014or, that is, a message that\u2019s designed to convict people without giving them the hope of the gospel. I don\u2019t want people to go out, leaving my meeting with a big burden on their shoulders. I want them to go out, in the words of John Newton, \u201cI am a great sinner, but I have a great Savior.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I believe\u2014and this is something that came to me, back in about 1979. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPrior to that, I would say my ministry was characterized by the word, \u201cought\u201d: \u201cYou <em>ought<\/em> to do this,\u201d \u201cYou <em>ought<\/em> not to do that,\u201d and so forth. I saw the bankruptcy\u2014God helped me to see the bankruptcy of that in my own life and in seeing people around me. I believe that the gospel is the greatest motivator for wanting to deal with sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot only that, if I know that my sin has been forgiven\u2014and I\u2019m talking about a judicial forgiveness by God so that He has forgiven us of our sin and He\u2019s clothed us with the righteousness of Christ\u2014then, I am freed up to face my sin. If I don\u2019t believe God has forgiven me, then, I have to live in denial about it because I can\u2019t stand that prospect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or paying penance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Paying penance for something like that. So, the solution to this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014first of all, we have to face the fact that we are sinners\u2014and that, not only have we sinned, we\u2019re just flat-out sinners. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember an incident I talk about vaguely in the book where God used one specific instance of selfishness\u2014a very subtle instance in my life\u2014and reminded me of that. Then, the Holy Spirit helped me to see that that was not an isolated instance. Then, I thought, \u201cI am a selfish person.\u201d\u00a0 That really hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, you see, I can come to God and realize that Jesus died, not only for my sins, but for my iniquity\u2014my sinful nature\/my flesh\u2014all of that. He died for the guilt of that. He died for the pollution of that. And so, the gospel frees me up to face my sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gospel <em>motivates<\/em> me to want to deal with my sin and to want to live a life that\u2019s pleasing to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And let me read these verses that came to mind as you were explaining that. This is from Titus, Chapter 2\u2014and you know these verses: \u201cThe grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; who gave Himself up for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, who are zealous for good works.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s the effect of grace. And the gospel is the gospel of the grace of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. So, to the person, who is struggling with lawlessness and being a lawbreaker\u2014or another one, who says, \u201cI have despised God and the authority of Scripture,\u201d\u2014or another one: \u201cI've just been, outright, defying God, shaking my fist at Him for this circumstance,\u201d or \u201c\u2026that,\u201d or \u201c\u2026my lot in life,\u201d\u2014the place to turn is from self and from this condition to Jesus Christ and what He offers, which is absolute forgiveness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014forgiveness from all of the activities, and heart attitudes, and, as you\u2019ve said, the many, many ways we are even unconscious about God and living our lives without a thought of Him on a daily basis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then\u2014with that forgiveness comes transformation and hope. There, we have the offer of God: \u201cI can forgive your past. I can change your present, and I can give you a future.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And to that person, who doesn\u2019t know Christ like that\u2014who doesn't know right now that they are forgiven of their lawlessness, their rebellion, their defiance\u2014everything they've done\u2014you just cry out, \u201cLord, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Amen, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThank You for the cross of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> I pray that prayer every morning: \u201cGod be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I quickly say, \u201cYou have been merciful, but I just want to acknowledge I live by Your mercy every day of my life.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I love the words in that old hymn: \u201cMy hope is built on nothing less than Jesus\u2019 blood and righteousness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just say one other thing, Dennis. I think that people\u2014when we talk about lawlessness, and rebellion, and defiance, their minds automatically go to the big sins\u2014but our gossip, and our jealousy, and our pride, and our anxiety, and so forth\u2014that\u2019s lawlessness \/ that\u2019s rebellion against God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I hope people will see\u2014will see the seriousness of even the respectable sins, which is an oxymoron, of course, but they are respectable to us\u2014but to see that, and then, to turn to God and to appreciate the gospel. Oftentimes, as you well know, it\u2019s the people who have really blown their life that love the gospel. I\u2019m saying there should not be that distinction\u2014every one of us should love the gospel!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I like the way you said it earlier. I mean, who among us is clean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerry:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I just appreciate you and what you\u2019ve said here.
