You know, if you look back on 2014, there were a lot of movies that came out in 2014 that had spiritual themes to them\u2014a lot of movies about God \/ a lot of movies about spiritual stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And here we are, starting out 2015\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and the first blockbuster, out of the gate, is <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. You wonder, \u201cWhat kind of year it\u2019s going to be\u201d; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And our guests, who are joining us on today\u2019s broadcast, Bob, would say that it, too, is a spiritual movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a good point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Dannah\/ Juli\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They have written a book in response to <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014<em>Pulling Back the Shades<\/em>\u2014subtitled<em>: Erotica, Intimacy, and the Longings of a Woman\u2019s Heart. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you draw a distinction, very quickly in the book\u2014that this is not merely a book about fiction \/ this is about fantasy. You draw a distinction between those two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes; fiction is a story that could possibly be true, but it\u2019s not true. Fantasy is a story that <em>cannot <\/em>be true. You know, for example, <em>Star Wars<\/em>, a famous fantasy\u2014it starts by even telling you, \u201cIn a galaxy far, far away...\u201d\u2014\u201cI want your imagination to go away from today\u2019s reality and accept that there might be talking creatures, or aliens, or whatever.\u201d It\u2019s taking you out of the laws that we live with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSexual fantasy, like <em>Fifty Shades of Grey, <\/em>does that without telling you that it\u2019s stepping into fantasy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, when you told me that the hero in <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> makes $100,000 an hour, I knew it was fantasy, at that point! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> And he\u2019s 27 years old\u2014yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> That was a clue for you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s something here that is fantasy\u2014right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, but there are more dangerous fantasies that break laws of nature\u2014of spiritual nature. For example, you know the whole story line of <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>is this woman falls in love with this man, whose name is Christian Grey, and he\u2019s abusive. He brings her into a bondage-type relationship. Now, in normal life, that doesn\u2019t end well\u2014abusive relationships are destructive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> In fantasy\u2014like <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014they end up falling in love. They end up healing each other\u2019s wounds. They end up with this happy, beautiful marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDannah and I have talked to women who have fallen for the fantasy that: \u201cWow! There is a guy like that out there. He might be a little on the edge\u2014a little dangerous\u2014maybe doing some of this bondage and dominance type stuff.\u201d It doesn\u2019t end in a good place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No. When the <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>series took off, here in the United States, <em>Huffington Post <\/em>ran an article outlining the fact that one match-making affair website\u2014their activity had gone up <em>dramatically<\/em>\u2014something like 42 percent\u2014because women were reading the book and were wanting to try bondage, but didn\u2019t feel like they could ask their husbands about that. They were willing to resort to an affair to do that. So, that\u2019s how real life works\u2014real life ends with sadness \/ real life ends with brokenness. But in this fantasy book, all the laws of nature are overridden.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the things I got from your book, ladies, is the danger of this to the soul\u2014that this movie is dangerous to our spiritual well-being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or, at least, the books are. There are dark spiritual themes in the book; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, just some of the spiritual themes I\u2019ll mention\u2014that there are Bible verses that are quoted throughout the books in different contexts. Christian Grey has what he calls The Red Room of Pain, which is where he would take women to flog them, basically, in a sexual way. In The Red Room of Pain, there is a wooden cross that is used for sexual reasons. Those are just a few examples of how\u2014why would a woman, who\u2019s writing a very erotic, pornographic book, intentionally pull in Biblical themes \/ Christian themes\u2014a wooden cross\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> \u2014the word, \u201choly,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> \u2014over, and over, and over again? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> There are two words that are used in each of the three books over 100 times. One of those words is a very profane word \/ the other one is \u201choly.\u201d Most often, the word \u201choly\u201d is paired with a swear word. So, this just isn\u2019t accidental.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I think this is a good time to interject the reality that there is no statistical difference in the percentage of Christian\u2014active, evangelical Christian women\u2014versus the mainstream public who are reading this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying it\u2019s as likely for a woman at your office to be reading this book as it is for a woman sitting next to you at church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve talked to women who picked up <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>because someone at church recommended it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes. Quite frankly, this whole journey of Juli and me writing this book started because Priscilla Shirer stopped us at a conference we were all speaking at and said: \u201cI\u2019m concerned. I\u2019m really concerned.\u201d So, we flew to Nashville, within a few weeks, and taped some video with Priscilla\u2014that\u2019s online\u2014to discuss this in a biblical manner. It was at that particular meeting that Juli and I said, \u201cWe have to put something in writing as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We know, statistically, that men are engaging in pornography. I think the last statistic I saw said that, in an average month, 60 percent of American men will view pornography at least once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How big\u2019s that number for women and erotica; do you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> We don\u2019t know yet because it would have been like asking the question about men at the advent of the internet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; nobody\u2019s raised their hand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Right, but when you\u2019re looking at a book like this\u2014selling 100 million copies\u2014you can consider the fact that she\u2019s outsold <em>Harry Potter<\/em>. It\u2019s been out here for a few decades. She\u2019s selling at a pace that\u2019s equal to only one author, and that would be God. You know, the only other book that you can compare sales of this to, now that she\u2019s outpaced <em>Harry Potter<\/em>, would be the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What would be the strategy that the enemy is employing through a book like this? What does he want to do with <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>, Juli?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli: <\/strong>Well, I think he wants to get access to our hearts. You know, I think what it comes down to\u2014if I say: \u201cThere\u2019s a part of my life \/ there\u2019s a part of my marriage \/ there\u2019s a part of my sexuality that I willingly just say, \u2018I\u2019m going to just dabble in this a little bit,\u2019\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s a man or a woman\u2014you\u2019re saying: \u201cI\u2019m taking myself outside of God\u2019s protective covering. I\u2019m taking my family and my marriage outside of that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we give, willingly\u2014we give Satan that access to our mind and our heart, there\u2019s no telling what he\u2019s going to do\u2014the kind of foothold he\u2019s going to get. We see this playing out, really, in all aspects of sexuality\u2014with gender and gay marriage and co-habitation. <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>is just one piece of this\u2014where Christians have <em>completely<\/em> lost the discernment of what it means to be set apart as holy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I think the enemy is trying to wipe out the gospel\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014simple as that. If you believe the Scriptures that teach, from Genesis to Revelation\u2014beginning in Genesis\u2014that male and female gender is in the image of God. Then, you read on to Genesis 4, where it says, \u201cAdam lay with his wife Eve,\u201d \/ \u201cAdam <em>yada<\/em> his wife Eve.\u201d The word means to know and to be known\u2014<em>transcending<\/em> the physical into the emotional and into the spiritual. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat same word is used throughout the context of the Old Testament to describe the intimacy we can know with God: \u201cBe still\u2014<em>yada<\/em>\u2014and know that I AM God.\u201d He wants to have this <em>knowing<\/em> with us. Ephesians makes it so clear: \u201cFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh.\u201d Then\u2014almost like the Apostle Paul has ADD\u2014he says, \u201cThis is a mystery, but I\u2019m really talking about Christ and the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the context of a one man\/one woman <em>passionate<\/em> marriage relationship, we see a picture of the greatest spiritual truth there is\u2014that there is a Savior who loves us passionately and wants to know us <em>intimately<\/em>. I agree with you, and I think this has a way of numbing the conscience. This, I think, is going to cause people to grow farther from God rather than closer to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne other loss, I think, or one other thing that the enemy is up to, I think\u2014that\u2019s with husbands. I think husbands are going to become more passive rather than more aggressive in their love and their care for their wives. Their wives are going to go get their needs met somewhere else\u2014so the husband\u2019s going to sense that. He may not know what it is \/ he may not know what he\u2019s missing. So, rather than having to woo his wife \/ to win his wife\u2014to cherish, nourish, and love his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014instead, he lets her go off to this fantasy. He\u2019s going to miss a real relationship with a real woman as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But aren\u2019t there some husbands, who would say: \u201cHey, my wife read those books. Things got a little\u2014they got spicy after that! I liked it! I hope she keeps reading that stuff!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve heard from husbands who\u2019ve said that. As a matter of fact, we\u2019ve heard from pastors\u2014men\u2019s pastors\u2014who don\u2019t know what to do because the men in their church are saying: \u201cWe love <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>! It\u2019s turning on our wives. What\u2019s wrong with that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, what you said is so key\u2014is that it\u2019s the easy way out. You, as men, know that loving your wife \/ understanding her, sexually\u2014wooing her takes work \/ it takes effort. There are times of frustration. What husbands are doing now\u2014are saying: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that work of understanding my wife\u2014of caring for her; of knowing her needs, and meeting them. I want <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>to do that for me so that I can just have a moment of fulfillment with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as Dannah said earlier, at the end of the day, that doesn\u2019t lead to intimacy. It will tear you apart. At the end of the day, you\u2019re not going to get what you want. In the moment, you might; but you are letting your wife be led to fantasies that will pull her away from you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You may have a month where your marital sexual relationship is different than it\u2019s been; but that\u2019s not going to be a lasting phenomenon over a 20-\/30-year period, fueled by erotica; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> She\u2019s not falling in love with you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> \u2014she\u2019s not aroused by you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, it would be the same thing you\u2019d say for a husband who would bring pornography\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014watching video or internet pornography with his wife in their marriage bed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014that does not fuel intimacy with a real person in a real relationship for a lifetime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my heart is just beating within me because I just want women and men, listening right now, to be part of the solution. I know it\u2019s a scary, difficult thing because the verse that comes to my mind is in Galatians 6:1: \u201cIf anyone is caught in sin, you who are spiritual should restore him.\u201d That\u2019s our call, right now\u2014God is saying: \u201cListen! This is happening to the women in the church. You are <em>called<\/em> to restore them in a spirit of gentleness, but keep <em>watch<\/em> over yourself lest you should be tempted too.\u201d That\u2019s the thing\u2014this is thin ice we\u2019re skating on, as we address it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> We have to find\u2014each of us\u2014our own sensitivities. Juli read the book, <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>; I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me stop you there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because you decided, early on, you weren\u2019t going to read it. Let\u2019s say that, on a ten-point scale, you were a \u201cseven\u201d in terms of your conviction about not reading it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Now it\u2019s more like a \u201cten\u201d in my conviction of not reading it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t going to read it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2019ve grown in your conviction that you\u2019re going nowhere near it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No, never. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Well, because I\u2019ve seen the damage that it can do. I want women and men to understand that we do not have to <em>experience<\/em> sinful things to know they are sinful. But, when God burdens my heart and lets me see those who have had their lives ruined by it and He puts a call on my life to move forward\u2014as some people are receiving, right now, a call on their life to help somebody that they know has been reading this or been caught up in it\u2014we must move forward! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to sometimes do things that are uncomfortable. Juli and I looked at how Jesus approached the woman at the well. We decided: \u201cWow! He overrode so many\u2014<em>never<\/em> Scriptural mandates\u2014but religious traditions of the day to reach that woman\u2019s thirsty heart.\u201d He spoke to her\u2014that was not okay. He walked <em>out of His way<\/em> to find her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to break through some of our discomfort because of traditions to reach these lost and sexually-thirsty women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking to some women at the well, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They\u2019ve read it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They may have\u2014or have not\u2014come to the conclusion that they shouldn\u2019t have. Juli, to that woman, who\u2019s dealing with maybe shame\u2014maybe not\u2014what would you say to her because, undoubtedly, if 100 million copies or more have been sold, we\u2019ve got a ton of our listeners who have read it; and they have kind of smirked as they\u2019ve listened to us talk about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, I would say a few things. First of all, there\u2019s a big difference between shame and conviction. We would hate for a woman to walk away from this program, just feeling shame. Shame does nothing but lead you back to the pit of depression and helplessness; whereas conviction is God saying, \u201cMy daughter, I\u2019ve got a better plan for you!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI know you have longings. I <em>know<\/em> what brought you to this well. I know what your thirst is, but you\u2019re not going to be satisfied through <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. You\u2019re not going to be satisfied through living with this guy. You\u2019re not going to be satisfied through leaving your marriage for someone else. Would you trust My plan?\u201d So that\u2019s the first thing\u2014is saying: \u201cPlease don\u2019t leave with shame. If God is convicting you, it is because He loves you and He has a better plan for you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the other thing that we want women to hear is\u2014 we understand and God understands your thirst. God knows what it\u2019s like to live in this world, where you\u2019re surrounded by sexual things. You\u2019re lonely. You don\u2019t know how to have intimacy with your husband. You\u2019re in an unsatisfied or lonely marriage. You\u2019re single\u2014you\u2019re longing. He understands those longings. It takes work to say, \u201cOkay, Lord, help me with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBring companionship into my life \/ bring truth into my life in a way that will satisfy.\u201d But there is satisfaction at the end of that road.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I would just add\u2014kind of hitch-hiking off what you just said\u2014to that woman, who is longing for a relationship with her husband and may not really understand what God\u2019s blueprints are for intimacy \/ how to get there\u2014that\u2019s why we host the biblically-centered <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. It lays out how two imperfect people\u2014two selfish people \/ two broken people\u2014can go the distance in their marriage and not merely exist but truly begin to experience intimacy and oneness over a lifetime. That\u2019s right\u2014Tonda\u2019s single\u2014so this is a different slant at it as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t know anything about the book, and I didn\u2019t really know what their book was until I started reading it. I was a little stunned because I knew there was a fiction book\u2014<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014but I had no friends who read it \/ I had no family who did. I had heard nothing about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t have time to read it because you\u2019re reading all of these books for FamilyLife!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> You\u2019re right! And I don\u2019t read a lot of fiction. I read all non-fiction for FamilyLife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, when you started reading <em>Pulling Back the Shades <\/em>by Dannah and Juli\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I was a little\u2014I was like: \u201cWow! This is going to be an interesting read. It absolutely was kind of disgusting, really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t believe some of the things they referred to in it. In fact, I told Christy, your assistant\u2014it was like: \u201cOh, my gosh, Christy! Listen to this!\u201d I told Christy a few things\u2014about the red room mentioned in the book. She even said: \u201cDon\u2019t tell me that. I don\u2019t want that image in my head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> So, they don\u2019t go <em>too<\/em> far into the description; but just a little basic description was enough to make me go: \u201cNo way! You know, if you look back on 2014, there were a lot of movies that came out in 2014 that had spiritual themes to them\u2014a lot of movies about God \/ a lot of movies about spiritual stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And here we are, starting out 2015\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and the first blockbuster, out of the gate, is <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. You wonder, \u201cWhat kind of year it\u2019s going to be\u201d; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And our guests, who are joining us on today\u2019s broadcast, Bob, would say that it, too, is a spiritual movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a good point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Dannah\/ Juli\u2014welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They have written a book in response to <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014<em>Pulling Back the Shades<\/em>\u2014subtitled<em>: Erotica, Intimacy, and the Longings of a Woman\u2019s Heart. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you draw a distinction, very quickly in the book\u2014that this is not merely a book about fiction \/ this is about fantasy. You draw a distinction between those two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes; fiction is a story that could possibly be true, but it\u2019s not true. Fantasy is a story that <em>cannot <\/em>be true. You know, for example, <em>Star Wars<\/em>, a famous fantasy\u2014it starts by even telling you, \u201cIn a galaxy far, far away...\u201d\u2014\u201cI want your imagination to go away from today\u2019s reality and accept that there might be talking creatures, or aliens, or whatever.\u201d It\u2019s taking you out of the laws that we live with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSexual fantasy, like <em>Fifty Shades of Grey, <\/em>does that without telling you that it\u2019s stepping into fantasy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, when you told me that the hero in <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> makes $100,000 an hour, I knew it was fantasy, at that point! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> And he\u2019s 27 years old\u2014yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> That was a clue for you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s something here that is fantasy\u2014right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, but there are more dangerous fantasies that break laws of nature\u2014of spiritual nature. For example, you know the whole story line of <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>is this woman falls in love with this man, whose name is Christian Grey, and he\u2019s abusive. He brings her into a bondage-type relationship. Now, in normal life, that doesn\u2019t end well\u2014abusive relationships are destructive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> In fantasy\u2014like <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014they end up falling in love. They end up healing each other\u2019s wounds. They end up with this happy, beautiful marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDannah and I have talked to women who have fallen for the fantasy that: \u201cWow! There is a guy like that out there. He might be a little on the edge\u2014a little dangerous\u2014maybe doing some of this bondage and dominance type stuff.\u201d It doesn\u2019t end in a good place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No. When the <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>series took off, here in the United States, <em>Huffington Post <\/em>ran an article outlining the fact that one match-making affair website\u2014their activity had gone up <em>dramatically<\/em>\u2014something like 42 percent\u2014because women were reading the book and were wanting to try bondage, but didn\u2019t feel like they could ask their husbands about that. They were willing to resort to an affair to do that. So, that\u2019s how real life works\u2014real life ends with sadness \/ real life ends with brokenness. But in this fantasy book, all the laws of nature are overridden.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the things I got from your book, ladies, is the danger of this to the soul\u2014that this movie is dangerous to our spiritual well-being.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or, at least, the books are. There are dark spiritual themes in the book; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, just some of the spiritual themes I\u2019ll mention\u2014that there are Bible verses that are quoted throughout the books in different contexts. Christian Grey has what he calls The Red Room of Pain, which is where he would take women to flog them, basically, in a sexual way. In The Red Room of Pain, there is a wooden cross that is used for sexual reasons. Those are just a few examples of how\u2014why would a woman, who\u2019s writing a very erotic, pornographic book, intentionally pull in Biblical themes \/ Christian themes\u2014a wooden cross\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> \u2014the word, \u201choly,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> \u2014over, and over, and over again? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> There are two words that are used in each of the three books over 100 times. One of those words is a very profane word \/ the other one is \u201choly.\u201d Most often, the word \u201choly\u201d is paired with a swear word. So, this just isn\u2019t accidental.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I think this is a good time to interject the reality that there is no statistical difference in the percentage of Christian\u2014active, evangelical Christian women\u2014versus the mainstream public who are reading this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying it\u2019s as likely for a woman at your office to be reading this book as it is for a woman sitting next to you at church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve talked to women who picked up <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>because someone at church recommended it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes. Quite frankly, this whole journey of Juli and me writing this book started because Priscilla Shirer stopped us at a conference we were all speaking at and said: \u201cI\u2019m concerned. I\u2019m really concerned.\u201d So, we flew to Nashville, within a few weeks, and taped some video with Priscilla\u2014that\u2019s online\u2014to discuss this in a biblical manner. It was at that particular meeting that Juli and I said, \u201cWe have to put something in writing as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We know, statistically, that men are engaging in pornography. I think the last statistic I saw said that, in an average month, 60 percent of American men will view pornography at least once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How big\u2019s that number for women and erotica; do you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> We don\u2019t know yet because it would have been like asking the question about men at the advent of the internet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; nobody\u2019s raised their hand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Right, but when you\u2019re looking at a book like this\u2014selling 100 million copies\u2014you can consider the fact that she\u2019s outsold <em>Harry Potter<\/em>. It\u2019s been out here for a few decades. She\u2019s selling at a pace that\u2019s equal to only one author, and that would be God. You know, the only other book that you can compare sales of this to, now that she\u2019s outpaced <em>Harry Potter<\/em>, would be the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What would be the strategy that the enemy is employing through a book like this? What does he want to do with <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>, Juli?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli: <\/strong>Well, I think he wants to get access to our hearts. You know, I think what it comes down to\u2014if I say: \u201cThere\u2019s a part of my life \/ there\u2019s a part of my marriage \/ there\u2019s a part of my sexuality that I willingly just say, \u2018I\u2019m going to just dabble in this a little bit,\u2019\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s a man or a woman\u2014you\u2019re saying: \u201cI\u2019m taking myself outside of God\u2019s protective covering. I\u2019m taking my family and my marriage outside of that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we give, willingly\u2014we give Satan that access to our mind and our heart, there\u2019s no telling what he\u2019s going to do\u2014the kind of foothold he\u2019s going to get. We see this playing out, really, in all aspects of sexuality\u2014with gender and gay marriage and co-habitation. <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>is just one piece of this\u2014where Christians have <em>completely<\/em> lost the discernment of what it means to be set apart as holy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I think the enemy is trying to wipe out the gospel\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014simple as that. If you believe the Scriptures that teach, from Genesis to Revelation\u2014beginning in Genesis\u2014that male and female gender is in the image of God. Then, you read on to Genesis 4, where it says, \u201cAdam lay with his wife Eve,\u201d \/ \u201cAdam <em>yada<\/em> his wife Eve.\u201d The word means to know and to be known\u2014<em>transcending<\/em> the physical into the emotional and into the spiritual. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat same word is used throughout the context of the Old Testament to describe the intimacy we can know with God: \u201cBe still\u2014<em>yada<\/em>\u2014and know that I AM God.\u201d He wants to have this <em>knowing<\/em> with us. Ephesians makes it so clear: \u201cFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh.\u201d Then\u2014almost like the Apostle Paul has ADD\u2014he says, \u201cThis is a mystery, but I\u2019m really talking about Christ and the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the context of a one man\/one woman <em>passionate<\/em> marriage relationship, we see a picture of the greatest spiritual truth there is\u2014that there is a Savior who loves us passionately and wants to know us <em>intimately<\/em>. I agree with you, and I think this has a way of numbing the conscience. This, I think, is going to cause people to grow farther from God rather than closer to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne other loss, I think, or one other thing that the enemy is up to, I think\u2014that\u2019s with husbands. I think husbands are going to become more passive rather than more aggressive in their love and their care for their wives. Their wives are going to go get their needs met somewhere else\u2014so the husband\u2019s going to sense that. He may not know what it is \/ he may not know what he\u2019s missing. So, rather than having to woo his wife \/ to win his wife\u2014to cherish, nourish, and love his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014instead, he lets her go off to this fantasy. He\u2019s going to miss a real relationship with a real woman as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But aren\u2019t there some husbands, who would say: \u201cHey, my wife read those books. Things got a little\u2014they got spicy after that! I liked it! I hope she keeps reading that stuff!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve heard from husbands who\u2019ve said that. As a matter of fact, we\u2019ve heard from pastors\u2014men\u2019s pastors\u2014who don\u2019t know what to do because the men in their church are saying: \u201cWe love <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>! It\u2019s turning on our wives. What\u2019s wrong with that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, what you said is so key\u2014is that it\u2019s the easy way out. You, as men, know that loving your wife \/ understanding her, sexually\u2014wooing her takes work \/ it takes effort. There are times of frustration. What husbands are doing now\u2014are saying: \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that work of understanding my wife\u2014of caring for her; of knowing her needs, and meeting them. I want <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>to do that for me so that I can just have a moment of fulfillment with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as Dannah said earlier, at the end of the day, that doesn\u2019t lead to intimacy. It will tear you apart. At the end of the day, you\u2019re not going to get what you want. In the moment, you might; but you are letting your wife be led to fantasies that will pull her away from you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You may have a month where your marital sexual relationship is different than it\u2019s been; but that\u2019s not going to be a lasting phenomenon over a 20-\/30-year period, fueled by erotica; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> She\u2019s not falling in love with you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> \u2014she\u2019s not aroused by you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, it would be the same thing you\u2019d say for a husband who would bring pornography\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014watching video or internet pornography with his wife in their marriage bed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014that does not fuel intimacy with a real person in a real relationship for a lifetime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my heart is just beating within me because I just want women and men, listening right now, to be part of the solution. I know it\u2019s a scary, difficult thing because the verse that comes to my mind is in Galatians 6:1: \u201cIf anyone is caught in sin, you who are spiritual should restore him.\u201d That\u2019s our call, right now\u2014God is saying: \u201cListen! This is happening to the women in the church. You are <em>called<\/em> to restore them in a spirit of gentleness, but keep <em>watch<\/em> over yourself lest you should be tempted too.\u201d That\u2019s the thing\u2014this is thin ice we\u2019re skating on, as we address it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> We have to find\u2014each of us\u2014our own sensitivities. Juli read the book, <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>; I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me stop you there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because you decided, early on, you weren\u2019t going to read it. Let\u2019s say that, on a ten-point scale, you were a \u201cseven\u201d in terms of your conviction about not reading it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Now it\u2019s more like a \u201cten\u201d in my conviction of not reading it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t going to read it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2019ve grown in your conviction that you\u2019re going nowhere near it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> No, never. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Well, because I\u2019ve seen the damage that it can do. I want women and men to understand that we do not have to <em>experience<\/em> sinful things to know they are sinful. But, when God burdens my heart and lets me see those who have had their lives ruined by it and He puts a call on my life to move forward\u2014as some people are receiving, right now, a call on their life to help somebody that they know has been reading this or been caught up in it\u2014we must move forward! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to sometimes do things that are uncomfortable. Juli and I looked at how Jesus approached the woman at the well. We decided: \u201cWow! He overrode so many\u2014<em>never<\/em> Scriptural mandates\u2014but religious traditions of the day to reach that woman\u2019s thirsty heart.\u201d He spoke to her\u2014that was not okay. He walked <em>out of His way<\/em> to find her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to break through some of our discomfort because of traditions to reach these lost and sexually-thirsty women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking to some women at the well, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They\u2019ve read it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They may have\u2014or have not\u2014come to the conclusion that they shouldn\u2019t have. Juli, to that woman, who\u2019s dealing with maybe shame\u2014maybe not\u2014what would you say to her because, undoubtedly, if 100 million copies or more have been sold, we\u2019ve got a ton of our listeners who have read it; and they have kind of smirked as they\u2019ve listened to us talk about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, I would say a few things. First of all, there\u2019s a big difference between shame and conviction. We would hate for a woman to walk away from this program, just feeling shame. Shame does nothing but lead you back to the pit of depression and helplessness; whereas conviction is God saying, \u201cMy daughter, I\u2019ve got a better plan for you!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI know you have longings. I <em>know<\/em> what brought you to this well. I know what your thirst is, but you\u2019re not going to be satisfied through <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. You\u2019re not going to be satisfied through living with this guy. You\u2019re not going to be satisfied through leaving your marriage for someone else. Would you trust My plan?\u201d So that\u2019s the first thing\u2014is saying: \u201cPlease don\u2019t leave with shame. If God is convicting you, it is because He loves you and He has a better plan for you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the other thing that we want women to hear is\u2014 we understand and God understands your thirst. God knows what it\u2019s like to live in this world, where you\u2019re surrounded by sexual things. You\u2019re lonely. You don\u2019t know how to have intimacy with your husband. You\u2019re in an unsatisfied or lonely marriage. You\u2019re single\u2014you\u2019re longing. He understands those longings. It takes work to say, \u201cOkay, Lord, help me with this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBring companionship into my life \/ bring truth into my life in a way that will satisfy.\u201d But there is satisfaction at the end of that road.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I would just add\u2014kind of hitch-hiking off what you just said\u2014to that woman, who is longing for a relationship with her husband and may not really understand what God\u2019s blueprints are for intimacy \/ how to get there\u2014that\u2019s why we host the biblically-centered <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. It lays out how two imperfect people\u2014two selfish people \/ two broken people\u2014can go the distance in their marriage and not merely exist but truly begin to experience intimacy and oneness over a lifetime. That\u2019s right\u2014Tonda\u2019s single\u2014so this is a different slant at it as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t know anything about the book, and I didn\u2019t really know what their book was until I started reading it. I was a little stunned because I knew there was a fiction book\u2014<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>\u2014but I had no friends who read it \/ I had no family who did. I had heard nothing about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t have time to read it because you\u2019re reading all of these books for FamilyLife!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> You\u2019re right! And I don\u2019t read a lot of fiction. I read all non-fiction for FamilyLife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, when you started reading <em>Pulling Back the Shades <\/em>by Dannah and Juli\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I was a little\u2014I was like: \u201cWow! This is going to be an interesting read. It absolutely was kind of disgusting, really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t believe some of the things they referred to in it. In fact, I told Christy, your assistant\u2014it was like: \u201cOh, my gosh, Christy! Listen to this!\u201d I told Christy a few things\u2014about the red room mentioned in the book. She even said: \u201cDon\u2019t tell me that. I don\u2019t want that image in my head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tonda:<\/strong> So, they don\u2019t go <em>too<\/em> far into the description; but just a little basic description was enough to make me go: \u201cNo way!
