We went and sat down in the two little dinky chairs in this dimly-lit hotel room. Don sat on the bed; and he said: \u201cWell, you two sure have been spending a lot of time together. I think you\u2019re both old enough and mature enough that you need to decide whether or not it\u2019s God\u2019s will for you to be married or not.\u201d\u00a0 I could have gone through the floor. I\u2019d never, in a million years, expected that to come out of his mouth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, January 28<sup>th<\/sup>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. You know, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking about\u2014we\u2019re exploring, this week, the seasons of a woman\u2019s life\u2014all of the different chapters that a woman goes through in life. We\u2019re doing that by kind of rehearsing your wife\u2019s life story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we heard, earlier, a dramatic story\u2014where my wife, Barbara, was single, content on a mission in ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ at the University of South Carolina\u2014and how, just on the precipice of hearing the hoof beats of a horse bringing the knight in shining armor,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014we had to cut off the program. I said,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Only the knight could describe it that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cYou\u2019ll have to wait\u2014you\u2019ll have to wait to hear the rest of the story.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Barbara, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our hope, here, is that, in telling your story, we can kind of help women calibrate: \u201cAm I about the right things in life at the stage I\u2019m in?\u00a0 Am I focused on what ought to be my priorities, at this time?\u201d\u00a0 But it occurs to me\u2014it\u2019s been 20-plus years that we\u2019ve been on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. This is kind of the first time we\u2019re getting around to this story. I think we are a little late coming to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, anyway, I guess better late than never. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I guess\u2014\u201cBetter late than never.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s helpful for a young woman to think back, \u201cDuring the early chapters of life\u2014when you are single \/ when you are in high school or college\u2014you should be thinking about: \u2018What is God\u2019s design for me?\u00a0 What\u2019s God\u2019s purpose for me?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat ought to be the center hub from which everything else comes; right? So: \u201cWhat\u2019s my job going to be?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s my family going to be?\u201d\u2014or any other choice\u2014really grows out of that hub of: \u201cWhat am I doing to advance the Kingdom?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And if something else gets into that hub space, that\u2019s going to bring you discontentment\u2014but when advancing the Kingdom is at the center\u2014then, God\u2019s design for marriage and family, or for your job, or for where you live, or who your roommates are\u2014all of those kind of get in orbit around the hub; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. And that\u2019s a good way to put it\u2014that Christ needs to be the hub of our life. He told His disciples\u2014and therefore, us\u2014He said, \u201cCome follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.\u201d\u00a0 He challenged those men, who followed Him, to be disciples. When you are a disciple, you do what the teacher does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in my college experience, it was really pivotal for me to understand that my life belonged to the King. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life had been redeemed. I had been changed \/ I had been transformed, and He was the one who owned me\u2014I didn\u2019t own myself. So, even though I certainly didn\u2019t do it perfectly\u2014I made lots of mistakes because I was young, like a child, and I was green\u2014but at the core, I understood that His plan was the best plan and that doing life the way He designed life to be lived was the best road to follow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the favorite quotes I\u2019ve heard on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> over the two-plus decades we\u2019ve been on the air\u2014came from Tommy Nelson, pastor at Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas, who said, \u201cIf you are single, your job is to run as hard and as fast toward Jesus is as you can.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf, while you are running as hard and as fast toward Jesus is as you can, out of the corner of your eye, you see somebody in the same direction, at about the same speed, take a second look.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it was the summer of 1972 when you took a second look. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were in Dallas for a big event that Campus Crusade for Christ was hosting, called Expo-72. You were there all summer. The guy, who was running the bus routes for all of the people there was your old friend from college, Dennis Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Forty thousand high school kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right, and you had to get them\u2014you had to make the buses run. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They had to come from Denton, from Fort Worth, from South Dallas \/ East Dallas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s just hard for me to believe that that was in your 22-year-old hands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, it was hard for all of us to believe\u2014oh my gosh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I believe we\u2019re going to get to heaven and find out there were angels, sent from heaven, driving those buses. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No question! [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, parents\u2014if they had known what was going on\u2014would have been terribly frightened; but yes, that was the summer when both of us were running in the same direction. We both kind of looked out of the corner of our eyes\u2014yes, it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve heard the story; but it\u2019d be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014good for us to bring our listeners up to date with it. You were at the mall, as I remember, walking across the mall parking lot in Dallas; isn\u2019t that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it started\u2014because, when I moved to Dallas, I didn\u2019t know anybody. I didn\u2019t know how to get around the city\u2014I\u2019d never been there. Dennis offered, very kindly and graciously, to show me around. He said, \u201cI will pick you up and take you to work,\u201d\u2014because we were working in the same building, preparing for this conference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, time out\u2014time out. Was there an agenda here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I have to admit\u2014when she showed up at the office that I was working in, I kind of went, \u201cWho-man\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWoman.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cWho-man\u2014woman!\u00a0 Wow!\u201d\u00a0 You know?\u00a0 And we were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She had changed since college?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not really. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, I don\u2019t think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not really; but all of a sudden, the friend that I\u2019d had in college and the friendship we enjoyed\u2014there was just kind of this sprinkled stuff; you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Something new?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Pixie dust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Pixie dust\u2014but all of a sudden, I noticed her\u2014not as a friend, but it was like, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 I remember the dress she was wearing. It was like, \u201cI need to help her around the city. [Laughter]\u00a0 I need to help her from getting lost here,\u201d\u2014this just makes real good sense to a single man. <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have any sense that there was anything more than just he was trying to be helpful?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Not, initially, because we had been such good friends. I had decided that he was a good friend. In fact, I considered him one of my very best friends, and I kind of liked it that way. So, I wasn\u2019t really interested in it being anything other than friendship because it was real comfortable\/predictable\u2014and safe as a friendship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; but one night, it became something more than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And this sounds like it\u2019s an assorted affair or something. What took place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, it does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014was so harmless\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that some of our listeners would go: \u201cHe did what?!\u00a0 She said what?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re walking across a mall parking lot, and Dennis took your hand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He did\u2014he did. We were walking\u2014it was nine o\u2019clock at night. The stores were closed. We were looking in the windows, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The sun was going down\u2014a little soft June breeze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it was June too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And he reached over, and he took my hand. I thought: \u201cUh-oh!\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a move friends make with friends. So, what am I going to do about this?\u201d\u00a0 I thought about it for about 60 seconds. I thought, \u201cI really like him as my friend, and I don\u2019t want to mess up this friendship.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cIf I tell him I don\u2019t like him holding my hand, he\u2019s going to think I\u2019m crazy!\u201d Then, I thought: \u201cIf he thinks I\u2019m crazy, I don\u2019t really care because I don\u2019t want to mess up the friendship. So, why did you hold my hand?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, being the man of God that I was, and ready for a DTR\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014for those of you who don\u2019t know what a DTR is\u2014that\u2019s \u201cDefine the Relationship\u201d\u2014I was stunned\u2014I did not know what to say!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was this the first time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I said nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014your move had been rejected by a young woman like this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I didn\u2019t have an answer for her question,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at least, at that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, I dropped her hand right there in the parking lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 This is awkward\u2014talk about an awkward evening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was\u2014yes, it was awkward. It was really awkward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We continued, over 55 days, for me to show her around town\u2014how to get around town because she still needed help\u201452 out of those 55 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if that had been me with her and she said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that all about?\u201d and I pull my hand back and I don\u2019t know, I\u2019d have been kind of scared to make another\u2014I\u2019d have just said, \u201cI guess she doesn\u2019t like me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I think that would have been contemplating that it was some kind of calculated move on my part\u2014and truthfully, we were just walking across the parking lot. It was kind of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was an impulse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. It was a nice romantic evening. I just kind of reached over to hold her hand. You know, I wasn\u2019t trying to put a move on her or anything\u2014it was just a gesture. So, when she pushed back, it was like: \u201cWell, you know what?\u00a0 I like her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI respect her. I am going to honor her wishes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>At which point, I didn\u2019t hold her hand until we were virtually engaged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how did the subject even come up again?\u00a0 How did you guys go from that awkward parking lot experience to starting to contemplate, \u201cMaybe there is something here\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, we just continued to hang out, which was just fine with me. He seemed to be happy with it too. So, we just did. He continued to pick me up\u2014we went to the office. We went through the conference. We spent a lot of time together. I mean, we ate all of our meals together. He\u2019d come over to the apartment, where I was living, in the evenings. We spent weekends together. We just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019d stay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014we were together a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at her apartment. We\u2019d sit out on the steps and talk at night until 2. I mean, it was just one of those deals where we couldn\u2019t get enough of each other\u2014and getting to know each other, and what was going on, and talking about life together, and about what we were learning about Jesus Christ and the mission we were on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were all about 100,000 high school students, college students, and laymen, from all over the United States, coming to the Cotton Bowl. Then, close to a million hearing Johnny Cash and Billy Graham in a major kind of a festival kind of experience. So, we were into the moment; and we were on a mission, as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But in the midst of that, your feelings for one another began to develop. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t the answer you were expecting; was it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re now getting a picture of how our marriage started, Bob. We were well into our marriage before the feelings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s not true!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s not true. No, what grew was respect\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014because I got to know him\u2014he got to know me. My respect and admiration for him, as a person, and his values and his standards continued to grow\u2014I assume it was mutual with me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because we got to know each other without all the baggage that comes with the physical involvement in a guy\/girl relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Barbara, when did you start to have feelings for Dennis?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t start having feelings for him until we were talking marriage. The reason is because I was thinking this was going to take a long time. We were having fun together. We were talking about me coming to visit him at Thanksgiving and doing some things together in six months because I was living in South Carolina and he was living in Denver. So, we were talking about plans for spending more time together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, in late July that summer, we were both in mutual friends\u2019 weddings. I was a bridesmaid \/ he was a groomsman. We were both in this wedding that was in the evening. That afternoon, before the wedding, a good friend of ours, named Don Meredith\u2014who was our director when we were students on campus\u2014and his wife Sally were at the wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon said to Dennis, \u201cI\u2019d like to sit down and meet with you and Barbara and have a conversation.\u201d\u00a0 Dennis must have said, \u201cYes,\u201d because the next thing I know he\u2019s picking me up and we\u2019re driving to Don\u2019s hotel room. We went in to have a conversation with Don. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we should say that Don\u2019s wife, Sally, is the woman who had led Barbara to Christ when Barbara was a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that conversation was about what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So, we showed up at the hotel room. We went in and sat down in the two little dinky chairs in this dark, dimly-lit hotel room. Don sat on the bed. He promptly said, at the very beginning\u2014he said, \u201cWell, you two sure have been spending a lot of time together, and people are talking.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI think you are both old enough and mature enough that you need to decide whether or not it\u2019s God\u2019s will for you to be married or not.\u201d\u00a0 I <em>absolutely<\/em> could have gone through the floor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was speechless\u2014I was shocked!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you think this was a setup?\u00a0 Did you think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t think it was a setup!\u00a0 But I just\u2014I\u2019d never, in a million years, expected that to come out of his mouth. Now, if I had thought about it, I probably could have figured it out; but I didn\u2019t think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We were not dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, we were not dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We were not dating in defined terms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right, where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014where two people have sat down and gone, \u201cYou\u2019re mine. I\u2019m yours.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re boyfriend\/girlfriend,\u201d\u2014right\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nobody else.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was all back to the parking lot in Northpark Shopping Center\u2014Dallas, Texas. This is a friendship that is being fully developed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, were you, as he said this\u2014and Barbara could have fallen through the floor\u2014were you going: \u201cWay to go, Don\u2014alright\u2014about time!\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I don\u2019t remember thinking that; but I remember it being a little bit like a challenge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat may sound kind of strange to our listeners; but I remember it being, \u201cYou know, I think he\u2019s right.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t say, \u201cYes, way to go!\u201d or anything like that. What I had no way of anticipating was how quickly the ball would start rolling as a result of that challenge being laid out and how fast this whole idea would pick up steam. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how far from that conversation in July, in a hotel room on a Saturday, until the proposal?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Days?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Days. We decided\u2014so, we sat and listened to his little speech about marriage, and God\u2019s will, and all that stuff. We left; and we went and got ready for the wedding\u2014did the wedding \/ did the reception. Afterwards, we got in a car and talked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m a decisive man, Bob. What else can you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He is. And we talked for about two or three hours\u2014probably midnight or after\u2014I don\u2019t know. We talked about it. We decided, that night, that what Don said made sense. Well: \u201cYes, obviously, either it is or isn\u2019t God\u2019s will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod doesn\u2019t give you multiple choices. He has a will \/ He has a plan. He has something that He\u2019s trying to accomplish in your life.\u201d Yes, it\u2014and after I got over the shock, it made sense: \u201cYes, God has a plan. Either Dennis is what God has for me or he\u2019s not.\u201d\u00a0 It made sense to go ahead and decide. \u201cIf he\u2019s not God\u2019s will, then, we shouldn\u2019t be spending so much time together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, within days, he says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Within days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cWill you marry me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what did you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I said, \u201cYes,\u201d because I had prayed\u2014we decided we were going to pray about it for a week. It didn\u2019t take me a week. It took me about two-and-a-half\u2014maybe two days\u2014didn\u2019t take that long because I just prayed and I said: \u201cAlright, God; You have a will. If this is your will for me to marry Dennis, then, I need You to show me because when he calls and asks, I need an answer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ours was not a romantic relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014at the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, at the beginning. [Laughter]\u00a0 Well said, my dear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And there was a wink that went with that, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was a wink and a little\u2014yes, whatever\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but you know, truthfully, feelings\u2014and we say this at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage getaway\u2014feelings are not a good foundation. They are the quicksand of a relationship because they come and go. So: \u201cHad we enjoyed each other as friends?\u201d\u00a0 Yes. \u201cHad we had a great time together?\u201d\u00a0 Absolutely; I mean, that\u2019s how we ended up where we were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, when it came time to look at marriage, it was not a decision based upon emotions. It was a decision based upon two individuals, who were contemplating: \u201cWhat does God want?\u00a0 What is He up to?\u00a0 Is He bringing us more together or moving us more apart?\u00a0 Are there any counselors in our lives who would advise us against this relationship?\u201d\u2014there were none. So, it was like: \u201cWow!\u00a0 Yes.\u201d\u00a0 And so, I call her up at 2am\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>My time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014her time in South Carolina. She says, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I wired a dozen roses that arrive the next morning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014make sure she wasn\u2019t asleep when she said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And we were married six weeks later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Now, people look at us when we tell this story like we must be from another planet; but once the subject was broached\u2014that night that Dennis and I stayed up and talked\u2014I think we started having feelings for each other then. The next morning, we went to church. Before I flew out, he handed me this little note, folded up in the envelope that you get\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You put the offering in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014the little offering envelope. He said, \u201cDon\u2019t open it until you\u2019re on the plane.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is that stealing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think you\u2019re excused. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And so, I waited until I got up and I was looking, out the window, at the clouds. I opened the little envelope. It said, \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 It was like, \u201cOh, really?\u201d\u00a0 You know\u2014so, it\u2014even though it sounds very factual\u2014and it was\u2014it was very faith-based. I think there are a lot of people God calls to be in business, and to be in education, and lots of vocations. hotel room. We went and sat down in the two little dinky chairs in this dimly-lit hotel room. Don sat on the bed; and he said: \u201cWell, you two sure have been spending a lot of time together. I think you\u2019re both old enough and mature enough that you need to decide whether or not it\u2019s God\u2019s will for you to be married or not.\u201d\u00a0 I could have gone through the floor. I\u2019d never, in a million years, expected that to come out of his mouth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, January 28<sup>th<\/sup>. You know, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking about\u2014we\u2019re exploring, this week, the seasons of a woman\u2019s life\u2014all of the different chapters that a woman goes through in life. We\u2019re doing that by kind of rehearsing your wife\u2019s life story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we heard, earlier, a dramatic story\u2014where my wife, Barbara, was single, content on a mission in ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ at the University of South Carolina\u2014and how, just on the precipice of hearing the hoof beats of a horse bringing the knight in shining armor,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014we had to cut off the program. I said,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Only the knight could describe it that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cYou\u2019ll have to wait\u2014you\u2019ll have to wait to hear the rest of the story.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Barbara, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our hope, here, is that, in telling your story, we can kind of help women calibrate: \u201cAm I about the right things in life at the stage I\u2019m in?\u00a0 Am I focused on what ought to be my priorities, at this time?\u201d\u00a0 But it occurs to me\u2014it\u2019s been 20-plus years that we\u2019ve been on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. This is kind of the first time we\u2019re getting around to this story. I think we are a little late coming to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, anyway, I guess better late than never. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I guess\u2014\u201cBetter late than never.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s helpful for a young woman to think back, \u201cDuring the early chapters of life\u2014when you are single \/ when you are in high school or college\u2014you should be thinking about: \u2018What is God\u2019s design for me?\u00a0 What\u2019s God\u2019s purpose for me?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat ought to be the center hub from which everything else comes; right? So: \u201cWhat\u2019s my job going to be?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s my family going to be?\u201d\u2014or any other choice\u2014really grows out of that hub of: \u201cWhat am I doing to advance the Kingdom?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And if something else gets into that hub space, that\u2019s going to bring you discontentment\u2014but when advancing the Kingdom is at the center\u2014then, God\u2019s design for marriage and family, or for your job, or for where you live, or who your roommates are\u2014all of those kind of get in orbit around the hub; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. And that\u2019s a good way to put it\u2014that Christ needs to be the hub of our life. He told His disciples\u2014and therefore, us\u2014He said, \u201cCome follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.\u201d\u00a0 He challenged those men, who followed Him, to be disciples. When you are a disciple, you do what the teacher does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in my college experience, it was really pivotal for me to understand that my life belonged to the King. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life had been redeemed. I had been changed \/ I had been transformed, and He was the one who owned me\u2014I didn\u2019t own myself. So, even though I certainly didn\u2019t do it perfectly\u2014I made lots of mistakes because I was young, like a child, and I was green\u2014but at the core, I understood that His plan was the best plan and that doing life the way He designed life to be lived was the best road to follow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the favorite quotes I\u2019ve heard on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> over the two-plus decades we\u2019ve been on the air\u2014came from Tommy Nelson, pastor at Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas, who said, \u201cIf you are single, your job is to run as hard and as fast toward Jesus is as you can.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf, while you are running as hard and as fast toward Jesus is as you can, out of the corner of your eye, you see somebody in the same direction, at about the same speed, take a second look.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it was the summer of 1972 when you took a second look. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were in Dallas for a big event that Campus Crusade for Christ was hosting, called Expo-72. You were there all summer. The guy, who was running the bus routes for all of the people there was your old friend from college, Dennis Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Forty thousand high school kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right, and you had to get them\u2014you had to make the buses run. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They had to come from Denton, from Fort Worth, from South Dallas \/ East Dallas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s just hard for me to believe that that was in your 22-year-old hands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, it was hard for all of us to believe\u2014oh my gosh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I believe we\u2019re going to get to heaven and find out there were angels, sent from heaven, driving those buses. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No question! [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, parents\u2014if they had known what was going on\u2014would have been terribly frightened; but yes, that was the summer when both of us were running in the same direction. We both kind of looked out of the corner of our eyes\u2014yes, it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve heard the story; but it\u2019d be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014good for us to bring our listeners up to date with it. You were at the mall, as I remember, walking across the mall parking lot in Dallas; isn\u2019t that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it started\u2014because, when I moved to Dallas, I didn\u2019t know anybody. I didn\u2019t know how to get around the city\u2014I\u2019d never been there. Dennis offered, very kindly and graciously, to show me around. He said, \u201cI will pick you up and take you to work,\u201d\u2014because we were working in the same building, preparing for this conference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, time out\u2014time out. Was there an agenda here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I have to admit\u2014when she showed up at the office that I was working in, I kind of went, \u201cWho-man\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWoman.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cWho-man\u2014woman!\u00a0 Wow!\u201d\u00a0 You know?\u00a0 And we were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She had changed since college?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not really. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, I don\u2019t think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not really; but all of a sudden, the friend that I\u2019d had in college and the friendship we enjoyed\u2014there was just kind of this sprinkled stuff; you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Something new?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Pixie dust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Pixie dust\u2014but all of a sudden, I noticed her\u2014not as a friend, but it was like, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 I remember the dress she was wearing. It was like, \u201cI need to help her around the city. [Laughter]\u00a0 I need to help her from getting lost here,\u201d\u2014this just makes real good sense to a single man. <br><br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have any sense that there was anything more than just he was trying to be helpful?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Not, initially, because we had been such good friends. I had decided that he was a good friend. In fact, I considered him one of my very best friends, and I kind of liked it that way. So, I wasn\u2019t really interested in it being anything other than friendship because it was real comfortable\/predictable\u2014and safe as a friendship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; but one night, it became something more than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And this sounds like it\u2019s an assorted affair or something. What took place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes, it does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014was so harmless\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that some of our listeners would go: \u201cHe did what?!\u00a0 She said what?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re walking across a mall parking lot, and Dennis took your hand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He did\u2014he did. We were walking\u2014it was nine o\u2019clock at night. The stores were closed. We were looking in the windows, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The sun was going down\u2014a little soft June breeze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it was June too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And he reached over, and he took my hand. I thought: \u201cUh-oh!\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a move friends make with friends. So, what am I going to do about this?\u201d\u00a0 I thought about it for about 60 seconds. I thought, \u201cI really like him as my friend, and I don\u2019t want to mess up this friendship.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cIf I tell him I don\u2019t like him holding my hand, he\u2019s going to think I\u2019m crazy!\u201d Then, I thought: \u201cIf he thinks I\u2019m crazy, I don\u2019t really care because I don\u2019t want to mess up the friendship. It\u2019s not worth it if he doesn\u2019t respect what I think.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So, I took a deep breath\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your heart did not melt instantly when he took your hand?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe facial expression doesn\u2019t show on the radio; does it?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It doesn\u2019t show on the radio. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, we could see the facial expression with that \u201cNo!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let me describe this for the listeners. Her face was wrinkled with <em>disgust,<\/em> like she\u2019d just eaten a sour grape\/\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a persimmon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, did you pull your hand away?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; I just said, \u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what did you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t pull away; and I didn\u2019t ask him to stop holding it. I just asked him why he did that because it was like: \u201cWe\u2019re really good friends. Friends don\u2019t hold hands. So, why did you hold my hand?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, being the man of God that I was, and ready for a DTR\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014for those of you who don\u2019t know what a DTR is\u2014that\u2019s \u201cDefine the Relationship\u201d\u2014I was stunned\u2014I did not know what to say!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was this the first time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I said nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014your move had been rejected by a young woman like this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I didn\u2019t have an answer for her question,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at least, at that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, I dropped her hand right there in the parking lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 This is awkward\u2014talk about an awkward evening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was\u2014yes, it was awkward. It was really awkward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We continued, over 55 days, for me to show her around town\u2014how to get around town because she still needed help\u201452 out of those 55 days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if that had been me with her and she said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that all about?\u201d and I pull my hand back and I don\u2019t know, I\u2019d have been kind of scared to make another\u2014I\u2019d have just said, \u201cI guess she doesn\u2019t like me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I think that would have been contemplating that it was some kind of calculated move on my part\u2014and truthfully, we were just walking across the parking lot. It was kind of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was an impulse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. It was a nice romantic evening. I just kind of reached over to hold her hand. You know, I wasn\u2019t trying to put a move on her or anything\u2014it was just a gesture. So, when she pushed back, it was like: \u201cWell, you know what?\u00a0 I like her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI respect her. I am going to honor her wishes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>At which point, I didn\u2019t hold her hand until we were virtually engaged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how did the subject even come up again?\u00a0 How did you guys go from that awkward parking lot experience to starting to contemplate, \u201cMaybe there is something here\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, we just continued to hang out, which was just fine with me. He seemed to be happy with it too. So, we just did. He continued to pick me up\u2014we went to the office. We went through the conference. We spent a lot of time together. I mean, we ate all of our meals together. He\u2019d come over to the apartment, where I was living, in the evenings. We spent weekends together. We just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019d stay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014we were together a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at her apartment. We\u2019d sit out on the steps and talk at night until 2. I mean, it was just one of those deals where we couldn\u2019t get enough of each other\u2014and getting to know each other, and what was going on, and talking about life together, and about what we were learning about Jesus Christ and the mission we were on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were all about 100,000 high school students, college students, and laymen, from all over the United States, coming to the Cotton Bowl. Then, close to a million hearing Johnny Cash and Billy Graham in a major kind of a festival kind of experience. So, we were into the moment; and we were on a mission, as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But in the midst of that, your feelings for one another began to develop. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t the answer you were expecting; was it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re now getting a picture of how our marriage started, Bob. We were well into our marriage before the feelings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s not true!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s not true. No, what grew was respect\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014because I got to know him\u2014he got to know me. My respect and admiration for him, as a person, and his values and his standards continued to grow\u2014I assume it was mutual with me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because we got to know each other without all the baggage that comes with the physical involvement in a guy\/girl relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Barbara, when did you start to have feelings for Dennis?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t start having feelings for him until we were talking marriage. The reason is because I was thinking this was going to take a long time. We were having fun together. We were talking about me coming to visit him at Thanksgiving and doing some things together in six months because I was living in South Carolina and he was living in Denver. So, we were talking about plans for spending more time together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, in late July that summer, we were both in mutual friends\u2019 weddings. I was a bridesmaid \/ he was a groomsman. We were both in this wedding that was in the evening. That afternoon, before the wedding, a good friend of ours, named Don Meredith\u2014who was our director when we were students on campus\u2014and his wife Sally were at the wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon said to Dennis, \u201cI\u2019d like to sit down and meet with you and Barbara and have a conversation.\u201d\u00a0 Dennis must have said, \u201cYes,\u201d because the next thing I know he\u2019s picking me up and we\u2019re driving to Don\u2019s hotel room. We went in to have a conversation with Don. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we should say that Don\u2019s wife, Sally, is the woman who had led Barbara to Christ when Barbara was a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that conversation was about what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So, we showed up at the hotel room. We went in and sat down in the two little dinky chairs in this dark, dimly-lit hotel room. Don sat on the bed. He promptly said, at the very beginning\u2014he said, \u201cWell, you two sure have been spending a lot of time together, and people are talking.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI think you are both old enough and mature enough that you need to decide whether or not it\u2019s God\u2019s will for you to be married or not.\u201d\u00a0 I <em>absolutely<\/em> could have gone through the floor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was speechless\u2014I was shocked!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you think this was a setup?\u00a0 Did you think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, I didn\u2019t think it was a setup!\u00a0 But I just\u2014I\u2019d never, in a million years, expected that to come out of his mouth. Now, if I had thought about it, I probably could have figured it out; but I didn\u2019t think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We were not dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No, we were not dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We were not dating in defined terms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right, where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014where two people have sat down and gone, \u201cYou\u2019re mine. I\u2019m yours.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re boyfriend\/girlfriend,\u201d\u2014right\u2014\u201cThere\u2019s nobody else.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was all back to the parking lot in Northpark Shopping Center\u2014Dallas, Texas. This is a friendship that is being fully developed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, were you, as he said this\u2014and Barbara could have fallen through the floor\u2014were you going: \u201cWay to go, Don\u2014alright\u2014about time!\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I don\u2019t remember thinking that; but I remember it being a little bit like a challenge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat may sound kind of strange to our listeners; but I remember it being, \u201cYou know, I think he\u2019s right.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t say, \u201cYes, way to go!\u201d or anything like that. What I had no way of anticipating was how quickly the ball would start rolling as a result of that challenge being laid out and how fast this whole idea would pick up steam. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how far from that conversation in July, in a hotel room on a Saturday, until the proposal?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Days?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Days. We decided\u2014so, we sat and listened to his little speech about marriage, and God\u2019s will, and all that stuff. We left; and we went and got ready for the wedding\u2014did the wedding \/ did the reception. Afterwards, we got in a car and talked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m a decisive man, Bob. What else can you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He is. And we talked for about two or three hours\u2014probably midnight or after\u2014I don\u2019t know. We talked about it. We decided, that night, that what Don said made sense. Well: \u201cYes, obviously, either it is or isn\u2019t God\u2019s will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod doesn\u2019t give you multiple choices. He has a will \/ He has a plan. He has something that He\u2019s trying to accomplish in your life.\u201d Yes, it\u2014and after I got over the shock, it made sense: \u201cYes, God has a plan. Either Dennis is what God has for me or he\u2019s not.\u201d\u00a0 It made sense to go ahead and decide. \u201cIf he\u2019s not God\u2019s will, then, we shouldn\u2019t be spending so much time together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, within days, he says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Within days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cWill you marry me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what did you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I said, \u201cYes,\u201d because I had prayed\u2014we decided we were going to pray about it for a week. It didn\u2019t take me a week. It took me about two-and-a-half\u2014maybe two days\u2014didn\u2019t take that long because I just prayed and I said: \u201cAlright, God; You have a will. If this is your will for me to marry Dennis, then, I need You to show me because when he calls and asks, I need an answer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ours was not a romantic relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014at the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, at the beginning. [Laughter]\u00a0 Well said, my dear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And there was a wink that went with that, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was a wink and a little\u2014yes, whatever\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but you know, truthfully, feelings\u2014and we say this at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage getaway\u2014feelings are not a good foundation. They are the quicksand of a relationship because they come and go. So: \u201cHad we enjoyed each other as friends?\u201d\u00a0 Yes. \u201cHad we had a great time together?\u201d\u00a0 Absolutely; I mean, that\u2019s how we ended up where we were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, when it came time to look at marriage, it was not a decision based upon emotions. It was a decision based upon two individuals, who were contemplating: \u201cWhat does God want?\u00a0 What is He up to?\u00a0 Is He bringing us more together or moving us more apart?\u00a0 Are there any counselors in our lives who would advise us against this relationship?\u201d\u2014there were none. So, it was like: \u201cWow!\u00a0 Yes.\u201d\u00a0 And so, I call her up at 2am\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>My time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014her time in South Carolina. She says, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I wired a dozen roses that arrive the next morning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014make sure she wasn\u2019t asleep when she said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 And we were married six weeks later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Now, people look at us when we tell this story like we must be from another planet; but once the subject was broached\u2014that night that Dennis and I stayed up and talked\u2014I think we started having feelings for each other then. The next morning, we went to church. Before I flew out, he handed me this little note, folded up in the envelope that you get\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You put the offering in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014the little offering envelope. He said, \u201cDon\u2019t open it until you\u2019re on the plane.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is that stealing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think you\u2019re excused. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And so, I waited until I got up and I was looking, out the window, at the clouds. I opened the little envelope. It said, \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 It was like, \u201cOh, really?\u201d\u00a0 You know\u2014so, it\u2014even though it sounds very factual\u2014and it was\u2014it was very faith-based. Once we entertained the idea that this was of God, the feelings came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m trying to figure out what lessons people can learn from this chapter of your life\u2014that our broadly applicable other than the fact that\u2014again, when Christ is at the center of what you are doing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014when your chief goal is to please Him, then, really, at that point, marriage\/family\u2014how it\u2019s all going to come together\u2014that\u2019s going to work if He\u2019s at the center of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you\u2019ve got two people\u2014a man and a woman\u2014who are sold out to Jesus Christ\u2014they have settled the issue of who the Master is \/ who owns their lives\u2014secondly, they know where they are headed and are committed to Him in going there\u2014and I\u2019m not saying you have to be in the ministry to determine that. I think there are a lot of people God calls to be in business, and to be in education, and lots of vocations. I think if you\u2019ve settled the issue of <em>Master<\/em> and <em>mission<\/em>\u2014then, it goes a long ways to helping solidify the last \u201cM\u201d\u2014which is your <em>mate<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve got 30 seconds for you to talk about the resources you\u2019ve been working on here, Barbara, with Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.
