And I just want to tell our listeners\u2014if you are anywhere near a seatbelt, strap it on. Get in a quiet place, where you can listen to this broadcast very carefully because you\u2019re going to hear a message that really, I think, unpacks God\u2019s thinking of why He created marriage and why it is so important for us to understand the nobility and the purpose of marriage and what God was up to\u2014especially in this culture today, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe shouldn\u2019t be apologizing for the Bible and what the Bible says about marriage today. As never before, we need to realize it\u2019s the way it works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was the way God designed it to be successful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You and I first heard this message when Dr. Al Mohler presented it at our <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>marriage event, back in Portland, several months ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; in fact, I want our listeners to know\u2014we hosted three events in arenas and had a simulcast for the third event. We touched about 43,000 lives through those three events and the simulcast. If you\u2019ve not been through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>, go to TheArtofMarriage.com if you want more information. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s listen to Part One of Dr. Al Mohler\u2019s message on God\u2019s design for marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al: <\/strong>We want to celebrate one of God\u2019s greatest gifts to humanity. It just goes by that name that brings us here together\u2014the name of marriage\u2014a name that rings with a certain clarity among us because we recognize, as we are here, not just in the name of marriage, but more importantly in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are here to recognize that marriage is actually a gift\u2014one of God\u2019s greatest gifts to us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let\u2019s forget for a moment that we have any idea that marriage is anything other than a human invention. Let\u2019s just assume, for a moment, that we\u2019re going to look at this from an entirely secular perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to step out of the biblical worldview and just imagine that we\u2019re thinking in purely secular terms, for a just a moment, about marriage. Here is the bottom line of the purely secular understanding of marriage\u2014it is a fantastic thing. It is essential for humanity and for human flourishing. Even the secular world understands the singular importance of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTragically, one of the reasons why there is so much understanding of why marriage is so important now is because of the marginalization and subversion of marriage\u2014the fact that there are so many marital breakups, and there has been so much devastation in marriage. In the wake of that, our pathology and patterns lead even secular observers to say: \u201cNow, wait just a minute. Bad things are happening now that weren\u2019t happening when marriage was the central institution of human existence; and when it was honored, in every way, by society; and when society believed that it was its responsibility to protect marriage\u2014to encourage husbands and wives to stay together\u2014a structure of law and cultural customs and social expectations.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>They understand that, when that fell apart\u2014and when marriage began to also fall apart and fall to the side\u2014bad things have been happening. That means what they are seeing is actually a testimony to the goodness of marriage because\u2014here are some things you need to keep in mind\u2014where marriages are intact and where families are flourishing, the entire society \/ the entire culture flourishes. In reverse, where marriage is not respected\u2014where marriages are not intact \/ where families are not flourishing, the entire civilization begins to crumble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a basic thing, even political scientists understand\u2014and this is an inflexible rule of politics\u2014where marriage and the family are <em>large<\/em>, in terms of significance, the government can be small; but when marriage and the family, in terms of significance are small, the government has to be <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat will give you something to ponder as you think about just the secular understanding of the importance of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEdmund Burke said that society requires the existence of little platoons that make civilization possible. The most fundamental of those little platoons is the little platoon in your house\u2014you, your spouse \/ the two of you together, with your kids\u2014that\u2019s the most important little platoon that makes society possible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s not just society at large \/ it\u2019s not just culture that benefits\u2014even from a secular understanding of the importance of marriage\u2014it\u2019s also the husband and the wife. Both the husband and the wife \/ both the man and the woman, united in the institution of marriage\u2014even from a purely secular perspective\u2014do better than their unmarried counterparts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWomen\u2014especially, over the lifespan and especially as you get to the end of that lifespan\u2014report far higher personal satisfaction if they\u2019ve been in an enduring marriage during that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe experience of being a wife \/ the experience of being a mother\u2014and all that goes with that\u2014brings incredible life satisfactions that simply wouldn\u2019t come any other way. There are all kinds of reasons why women, at every stage of life\u2014but especially toward the end stages of life\u2014indicate that marriage was <em>central<\/em> to their happiness and to their fulfillment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for men, you can even add something else\u2014that is\u2014men, who are married, and men, who then stay married, live longer\u2014just from a purely secular analysis\u2014than men who do not. And guys, let\u2019s just talk amongst ourselves here. We know why that is so. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s because the only reason we ever go to a doctor is because our wife makes the appointment. And let\u2019s just confess. We know that the only reason we know what to take and when\u2014we don\u2019t even worry about why\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is because our wife says, \u201cYou take the blue one right now.\u201d\u00a0 And she watches you do it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one indication. I mean, it tells us something\u2014that men actually live longer because they are married. It\u2019s because someone is watching out for us. It\u2019s also because stress levels and all of the things that combine in order to indicate that married men are healthier than unmarried men. This is just a purely secular perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat about kids?\u00a0 Well, as it turns out\u2014even common, secular sociological\/economic analysis indicates that children raised in intact homes, with a father and a mother in the home\u2014when those kids are compared to other children, there is a <em>spectacular<\/em> difference\u2014an absolutely <em>amazing<\/em> difference. So different that\u2014quite frankly, that is the greatest national emergency we now face because you look at it\u2014and so many of the pathologies that are large across our society \/ so many of the things that make our headline news\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they are minimized to just an unbelievable extent if you just put that same child in the context of an intact family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoys\u2014raised in non-intact homes, which generally means with a single mom\u2014those boys, when they reach adolescence and young adulthood, their likelihood of police contact increases exponentially. Their likelihood of not finishing high school, their likelihood of not going to college, their likelihood of having all kinds of bad behavioral problems, their likelihood of having certain kinds of social and even educational disabilities\u2014they go up tremendously\u2014you just take dad out of the home. Just having dad in the home is a phenomenal gift to an entire society because of its impact upon boys and young men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd upon young women?\u2014here is an amazing thing\u2014we didn\u2019t know this until fairly recently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>hormonal<\/em> impact of a father in the home is actually something that helps to regulate the entire home\u2014even as the mothers regulate other parts of the home. Did you know that where the father \/ the biological father is in the home\u2014and in an intact marriage and where the mom and the dad are living with their kids\u2014girls go into puberty <em>later<\/em> than if you take the father out of the home?\u00a0 And that also impacts a <em>large<\/em> number of things that have to do with the life of that girl or that young woman, and her relationships, and her future. That\u2019s just a secular perspective\u2014that\u2019s just skimming kind of the top of the research. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just consider a purely secular perspective, one thing becomes abundantly clear\u2014where marriages are intact and flourishing, society flourishes. Where marriages and families are intact, the government can be <em>small. <\/em>Where families are intact and where marriage is honored, good things come to every single member of the family\u2014to the wife, to the husband, to the kids\u2014to the neighborhood, the city, the community, and beyond. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019re not here because we just wanted to look at sociology, and economics, and political science. We don\u2019t want to just look at medical research and pediatrics. We\u2019re here because we are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are here because marriage is <em>not <\/em>a human\/sociological development. We\u2019re here because marriage is not merely a sociological contrivance. We are here because <em>God said<\/em>, \u201cIt is not good for man to be alone\u201d; and He gave us the institution of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, before He gave us the institution of marriage, He gave us the gift of gender. As we read in the Book of Genesis\u2014in the very first chapter: \u201cSo God created man in His image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.\u201d So, from the very beginning, God\u2019s creative purpose\u2014His glory in creation was to make this one creature, made in His image, unlike every other creature. That creature He made in His image\u2014He made male and female. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe created us for each other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We are made in God\u2019s image. We are the only creature made in God\u2019s image. None of the other creatures are made in God\u2019s image. Every one of the other creatures displays God\u2019s glory in its creatureliness; but only the human, made in God\u2019s image, can consciously know the Creator and glorify Him. There is a <em>huge<\/em> contrast\u2014an <em>infinite<\/em> contrast. That\u2019s why those who confuse the difference between human beings and mere animals are doing a disservice that fundamentally flies in the face of, not only a reality that should be apparent to us all, but to the reality that is revealed in Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot long ago, a German zoo put together an exhibit. They decided they wanted to show that human beings are just another animal. So, they created an exhibit\u2014that they put human beings in it, wearing loin cloths and similar. They put them in there, and they put \u201c<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>\u201d on the outside. They said, \u201cLook, it just shows that human beings are just like any other animal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was asked by the national media to respond to it. I said, \u201cThat would make perfect sense if the giraffes put them in there and, then, put up the sign.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, if that would have happened\u2014if you had bears, lining up human beings, saying: \u201cGet in right now. We\u2019ll feed you when it\u2019s time,\u201d and if they named us\u2014but that\u2019s not the way it happens. That\u2019s not the way it happens at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is an infinite distinction between the human being and every other creature because, even though we are a creature, we are the creature <em>made in God\u2019s image<\/em>. Every one of those other critters demonstrates the glory of God in its critterness\u2014the giraffe with its neck, the dog that is just so incredibly happy all the time. I know this is a stretch\u2014but the cat shows the glory of God in its catness. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those imponderables\u2014I\u2019m going to understand that in heaven. But right now, I just understand that it\u2019s true. Every time a cat looks at me, I think it\u2019s seeing things that\u2014well, never mind. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, you look at all these animals and you recognize that they are <em>all<\/em> showing God\u2019s glory. It\u2019s easy for me to see that in our dog, Baxter the Wonder Beagle. I mean, he\u2019s just so happy all the time. I just wish I could be that happy. It\u2019s like Martin Luther said, \u201cWe should desire God...\u201d\u2014we should aim to desire God the way our dog enjoys a piece of meat\u2014unbridled joy. He experiences things I don\u2019t experience. I mean, when you go outside with Baxter, he is all into smells. That is his nature, and he smells things\u2014he looks at me like, \u201cYou have no idea what you are missing.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m glad to miss, quite frankly. But you know, God\u2019s glory is in that\u2014that is what he is supposed to do. He is supposed to be a <em>beagle<\/em>. In his beagleness, he\u2019s doing that; but you know, he doesn\u2019t worry about that. He never gives it any thought\u2014he\u2019s not self-conscious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like watching animal shows on television. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was convenient having a son in the house when he was a little boy and then a teenager because I could say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m watching to spend time with him. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s for him.\u201d\u00a0 And it\u2019s true because he was as fascinated with them as I was. You look at these things, and you see it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the ultimate animal show for guys to watch is one in which there\u2019s an act of predation about to happen. And there is a little gazelle or something like that\u2014it\u2019s very cute. Your heart goes out to it, and it\u2019s out there. It\u2019s just kind of prancing around. Then, you see the lion in the grass; and he\u2019s not having his quiet time. [Laughter]\u00a0 He\u2019s got it, and you know what he\u2019s plotting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you see the crouch. You see him start to move, and you see\u2014then, you see the grass move. Then, all of a sudden, you see the <em>act;<\/em> and it\u2019s horrifying. I mean, that lion is not thinking, \u201cThis is a cute little gazelle,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just taking him down. He takes him down, and it\u2019s <em>horrifying<\/em>\u2014and you look at this. Then, at the end of it, he\u2019s sitting there, smacking his lips\u2014blood all over his face. You\u2019ve never had\u2014you\u2019ve never seen one of those lions go: \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 What is in me?!\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI need to see a therapist. This is\u2014I mean\u2014I don\u2019t understand myself. I mean, I look at that thing; and the next thing you know\u2026this!\u201d\u00a0 No, what he\u2014he\u2019s smacking his lips, thinking, \u201cOkay, now, I don\u2019t have to do this for three days.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, human beings have a conscience. We\u2019re the only being made in God\u2019s image\u2014we have that moral understanding. We have a relationship with the Creator. We <em>know<\/em> that He is; and we, furthermore, have <em>built into us<\/em> a desire to <em>know Him<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you\u2019ll notice in Genesis, Chapter 2\u2014there is something very interesting here because, when we think about marriage, we immediately go to Genesis, Chapter 2; and that\u2019s right. That\u2019s where we ought to go; but one of the interesting things about going to Genesis, Chapter 2, is that includes, in its narrative, something most of us forget to include when we talk about God\u2019s gift of marriage. Let\u2019s look at it for a minute. <br><br>Beginning in verse 18 of Genesis, Chapter 2: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the Lord God said, \u201cIt is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him a helper fit for him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, out of the ground, the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But for Adam, there was not found a helper fit for him. So, the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs, and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man, He made into a woman, and he brought her to the man. Then, the man said, \u201cThis, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She should be called woman because she was taken out of man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTherefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe part that many of us don\u2019t remember is included in that\u2014is the part where the Lord says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper fit for him.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we immediately go to: \u201cSo, the Lord caused a great sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He opened his side and took out a rib\u2026\u201d\u2014but, no, there is something <em>between<\/em> those two verses\u2014and that\u2019s Adam naming the other animals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Adam has the privilege, and it\u2019s an incredible privilege. It\u2019s actually a demonstration of what we are\u2014we see commanded in Genesis 1:28 where Adam and Eve are told to take dominion over all the earth\u2014dominion over every creeping and crawling thing and everything that moves upon the earth. Part of that dominion was Adam names every one of these creatures. Whatever Adam named it\u2014that was its <em>name<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the most interesting thing about that is\u2014not only the demonstration of what that must have been like and of the dominion God gave to Adam\u2014but the declaration, \u201cBut for Adam, there was not found a helper fit for him.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s an interesting experience; isn\u2019t it? I mean, just imagine\u2014Adam\u2019s watching everything go by. He\u2019s going: \u201cCute,\u201d \u201cLittle bit scary\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, he\u2019s just naming them all as they go by. He realizes, at the end: \u201cNot one of them is for me. Not one of them is as I am\u2014made in God\u2019s image.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen and only then, did God cause a great sleep to fall upon Adam. And out of Adam, He made the woman. He didn\u2019t make the woman separate from the man. He made the woman <em>out<\/em> of the man. He made Adam to fall asleep; and out of Adam, He created the woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you\u2019ll notice the very same thing happened\u2014even as God presented <em>all the animals<\/em> to Adam and whatever he named them that was its name\u2014so, also, He presents the woman, now, made out of Adam\u2019s side as the complement \/ the helper\u2014the companion for him. When Adam sees <em>her<\/em>, he says, \u201cThis is now flesh of my flesh and bone of my bones,\u201d\u2014\u201cThis corresponds to me \/ she is as I am. She is made for me\/I am for her,\u201d\u2014\u201cShe shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Part One of a message from Al Mohler, the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, speaking on God\u2019s design for marriage. If you\u2019ve not been through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>, go to TheArtofMarriage.com if you want more information. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s listen to Part One of Dr. Al Mohler\u2019s message on God\u2019s design for marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al: <\/strong>We want to celebrate one of God\u2019s greatest gifts to humanity. It just goes by that name that brings us here together\u2014the name of marriage\u2014a name that rings with a certain clarity among us because we recognize, as we are here, not just in the name of marriage, but more importantly in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are here to recognize that marriage is actually a gift\u2014one of God\u2019s greatest gifts to us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let\u2019s forget for a moment that we have any idea that marriage is anything other than a human invention. Let\u2019s just assume, for a moment, that we\u2019re going to look at this from an entirely secular perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to step out of the biblical worldview and just imagine that we\u2019re thinking in purely secular terms, for a just a moment, about marriage. Here is the bottom line of the purely secular understanding of marriage\u2014it is a fantastic thing. It is essential for humanity and for human flourishing. Even the secular world understands the singular importance of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTragically, one of the reasons why there is so much understanding of why marriage is so important now is because of the marginalization and subversion of marriage\u2014the fact that there are so many marital breakups, and there has been so much devastation in marriage. In the wake of that, our pathology and patterns lead even secular observers to say: \u201cNow, wait just a minute. Bad things are happening now that weren\u2019t happening when marriage was the central institution of human existence; and when it was honored, in every way, by society; and when society believed that it was its responsibility to protect marriage\u2014to encourage husbands and wives to stay together\u2014a structure of law and cultural customs and social expectations.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>They understand that, when that fell apart\u2014and when marriage began to also fall apart and fall to the side\u2014bad things have been happening. That means what they are seeing is actually a testimony to the goodness of marriage because\u2014here are some things you need to keep in mind\u2014where marriages are intact and where families are flourishing, the entire society \/ the entire culture flourishes. In reverse, where marriage is not respected\u2014where marriages are not intact \/ where families are not flourishing, the entire civilization begins to crumble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a basic thing, even political scientists understand\u2014and this is an inflexible rule of politics\u2014where marriage and the family are <em>large<\/em>, in terms of significance, the government can be small; but when marriage and the family, in terms of significance are small, the government has to be <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat will give you something to ponder as you think about just the secular understanding of the importance of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEdmund Burke said that society requires the existence of little platoons that make civilization possible. The most fundamental of those little platoons is the little platoon in your house\u2014you, your spouse \/ the two of you together, with your kids\u2014that\u2019s the most important little platoon that makes society possible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s not just society at large \/ it\u2019s not just culture that benefits\u2014even from a secular understanding of the importance of marriage\u2014it\u2019s also the husband and the wife. Both the husband and the wife \/ both the man and the woman, united in the institution of marriage\u2014even from a purely secular perspective\u2014do better than their unmarried counterparts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWomen\u2014especially, over the lifespan and especially as you get to the end of that lifespan\u2014report far higher personal satisfaction if they\u2019ve been in an enduring marriage during that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe experience of being a wife \/ the experience of being a mother\u2014and all that goes with that\u2014brings incredible life satisfactions that simply wouldn\u2019t come any other way. There are all kinds of reasons why women, at every stage of life\u2014but especially toward the end stages of life\u2014indicate that marriage was <em>central<\/em> to their happiness and to their fulfillment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for men, you can even add something else\u2014that is\u2014men, who are married, and men, who then stay married, live longer\u2014just from a purely secular analysis\u2014than men who do not. And guys, let\u2019s just talk amongst ourselves here. We know why that is so. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s because the only reason we ever go to a doctor is because our wife makes the appointment. And let\u2019s just confess. We know that the only reason we know what to take and when\u2014we don\u2019t even worry about why\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is because our wife says, \u201cYou take the blue one right now.\u201d\u00a0 And she watches you do it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one indication. I mean, it tells us something\u2014that men actually live longer because they are married. It\u2019s because someone is watching out for us. It\u2019s also because stress levels and all of the things that combine in order to indicate that married men are healthier than unmarried men. This is just a purely secular perspective. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat about kids?\u00a0 Well, as it turns out\u2014even common, secular sociological\/economic analysis indicates that children raised in intact homes, with a father and a mother in the home\u2014when those kids are compared to other children, there is a <em>spectacular<\/em> difference\u2014an absolutely <em>amazing<\/em> difference. So different that\u2014quite frankly, that is the greatest national emergency we now face because you look at it\u2014and so many of the pathologies that are large across our society \/ so many of the things that make our headline news\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they are minimized to just an unbelievable extent if you just put that same child in the context of an intact family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoys\u2014raised in non-intact homes, which generally means with a single mom\u2014those boys, when they reach adolescence and young adulthood, their likelihood of police contact increases exponentially. Their likelihood of not finishing high school, their likelihood of not going to college, their likelihood of having all kinds of bad behavioral problems, their likelihood of having certain kinds of social and even educational disabilities\u2014they go up tremendously\u2014you just take dad out of the home. Just having dad in the home is a phenomenal gift to an entire society because of its impact upon boys and young men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd upon young women?\u2014here is an amazing thing\u2014we didn\u2019t know this until fairly recently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>hormonal<\/em> impact of a father in the home is actually something that helps to regulate the entire home\u2014even as the mothers regulate other parts of the home. Did you know that where the father \/ the biological father is in the home\u2014and in an intact marriage and where the mom and the dad are living with their kids\u2014girls go into puberty <em>later<\/em> than if you take the father out of the home?\u00a0 And that also impacts a <em>large<\/em> number of things that have to do with the life of that girl or that young woman, and her relationships, and her future. That\u2019s just a secular perspective\u2014that\u2019s just skimming kind of the top of the research. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just consider a purely secular perspective, one thing becomes abundantly clear\u2014where marriages are intact and flourishing, society flourishes. Where marriages and families are intact, the government can be <em>small. <\/em>Where families are intact and where marriage is honored, good things come to every single member of the family\u2014to the wife, to the husband, to the kids\u2014to the neighborhood, the city, the community, and beyond. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019re not here because we just wanted to look at sociology, and economics, and political science. We don\u2019t want to just look at medical research and pediatrics. We\u2019re here because we are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are here because marriage is <em>not <\/em>a human\/sociological development. We\u2019re here because marriage is not merely a sociological contrivance. We are here because <em>God said<\/em>, \u201cIt is not good for man to be alone\u201d; and He gave us the institution of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, before He gave us the institution of marriage, He gave us the gift of gender. As we read in the Book of Genesis\u2014in the very first chapter: \u201cSo God created man in His image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.\u201d So, from the very beginning, God\u2019s creative purpose\u2014His glory in creation was to make this one creature, made in His image, unlike every other creature. That creature He made in His image\u2014He made male and female. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe created us for each other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We are made in God\u2019s image. We are the only creature made in God\u2019s image. None of the other creatures are made in God\u2019s image. Every one of the other creatures displays God\u2019s glory in its creatureliness; but only the human, made in God\u2019s image, can consciously know the Creator and glorify Him. There is a <em>huge<\/em> contrast\u2014an <em>infinite<\/em> contrast. That\u2019s why those who confuse the difference between human beings and mere animals are doing a disservice that fundamentally flies in the face of, not only a reality that should be apparent to us all, but to the reality that is revealed in Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot long ago, a German zoo put together an exhibit. They decided they wanted to show that human beings are just another animal. So, they created an exhibit\u2014that they put human beings in it, wearing loin cloths and similar. They put them in there, and they put \u201c<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>\u201d on the outside. They said, \u201cLook, it just shows that human beings are just like any other animal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was asked by the national media to respond to it. I said, \u201cThat would make perfect sense if the giraffes put them in there and, then, put up the sign.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, if that would have happened\u2014if you had bears, lining up human beings, saying: \u201cGet in right now. We\u2019ll feed you when it\u2019s time,\u201d and if they named us\u2014but that\u2019s not the way it happens. That\u2019s not the way it happens at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is an infinite distinction between the human being and every other creature because, even though we are a creature, we are the creature <em>made in God\u2019s image<\/em>. Every one of those other critters demonstrates the glory of God in its critterness\u2014the giraffe with its neck, the dog that is just so incredibly happy all the time. I know this is a stretch\u2014but the cat shows the glory of God in its catness. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those imponderables\u2014I\u2019m going to understand that in heaven. But right now, I just understand that it\u2019s true. Every time a cat looks at me, I think it\u2019s seeing things that\u2014well, never mind. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, you look at all these animals and you recognize that they are <em>all<\/em> showing God\u2019s glory. It\u2019s easy for me to see that in our dog, Baxter the Wonder Beagle. I mean, he\u2019s just so happy all the time. I just wish I could be that happy. It\u2019s like Martin Luther said, \u201cWe should desire God...\u201d\u2014we should aim to desire God the way our dog enjoys a piece of meat\u2014unbridled joy. He experiences things I don\u2019t experience. I mean, when you go outside with Baxter, he is all into smells. That is his nature, and he smells things\u2014he looks at me like, \u201cYou have no idea what you are missing.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m glad to miss, quite frankly. But you know, God\u2019s glory is in that\u2014that is what he is supposed to do. He is supposed to be a <em>beagle<\/em>. In his beagleness, he\u2019s doing that; but you know, he doesn\u2019t worry about that. He never gives it any thought\u2014he\u2019s not self-conscious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like watching animal shows on television. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was convenient having a son in the house when he was a little boy and then a teenager because I could say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m watching to spend time with him. [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s for him.\u201d\u00a0 And it\u2019s true because he was as fascinated with them as I was. You look at these things, and you see it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the ultimate animal show for guys to watch is one in which there\u2019s an act of predation about to happen. And there is a little gazelle or something like that\u2014it\u2019s very cute. Your heart goes out to it, and it\u2019s out there. It\u2019s just kind of prancing around. Then, you see the lion in the grass; and he\u2019s not having his quiet time. [Laughter]\u00a0 He\u2019s got it, and you know what he\u2019s plotting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you see the crouch. You see him start to move, and you see\u2014then, you see the grass move. Then, all of a sudden, you see the <em>act;<\/em> and it\u2019s horrifying. I mean, that lion is not thinking, \u201cThis is a cute little gazelle,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just taking him down. He takes him down, and it\u2019s <em>horrifying<\/em>\u2014and you look at this. Then, at the end of it, he\u2019s sitting there, smacking his lips\u2014blood all over his face. You\u2019ve never had\u2014you\u2019ve never seen one of those lions go: \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 What is in me?!\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI need to see a therapist. This is\u2014I mean\u2014I don\u2019t understand myself. I mean, I look at that thing; and the next thing you know\u2026this!\u201d\u00a0 No, what he\u2014he\u2019s smacking his lips, thinking, \u201cOkay, now, I don\u2019t have to do this for three days.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, human beings have a conscience. We\u2019re the only being made in God\u2019s image\u2014we have that moral understanding. We have a relationship with the Creator. We <em>know<\/em> that He is; and we, furthermore, have <em>built into us<\/em> a desire to <em>know Him<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you\u2019ll notice in Genesis, Chapter 2\u2014there is something very interesting here because, when we think about marriage, we immediately go to Genesis, Chapter 2; and that\u2019s right. That\u2019s where we ought to go; but one of the interesting things about going to Genesis, Chapter 2, is that includes, in its narrative, something most of us forget to include when we talk about God\u2019s gift of marriage. Let\u2019s look at it for a minute. <br><br>Beginning in verse 18 of Genesis, Chapter 2: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the Lord God said, \u201cIt is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him a helper fit for him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, out of the ground, the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But for Adam, there was not found a helper fit for him. So, the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs, and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man, He made into a woman, and he brought her to the man. Then, the man said, \u201cThis, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She should be called woman because she was taken out of man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTherefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe part that many of us don\u2019t remember is included in that\u2014is the part where the Lord says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper fit for him.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we immediately go to: \u201cSo, the Lord caused a great sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He opened his side and took out a rib\u2026\u201d\u2014but, no, there is something <em>between<\/em> those two verses\u2014and that\u2019s Adam naming the other animals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Adam has the privilege, and it\u2019s an incredible privilege. It\u2019s actually a demonstration of what we are\u2014we see commanded in Genesis 1:28 where Adam and Eve are told to take dominion over all the earth\u2014dominion over every creeping and crawling thing and everything that moves upon the earth. Part of that dominion was Adam names every one of these creatures. Whatever Adam named it\u2014that was its <em>name<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the most interesting thing about that is\u2014not only the demonstration of what that must have been like and of the dominion God gave to Adam\u2014but the declaration, \u201cBut for Adam, there was not found a helper fit for him.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s an interesting experience; isn\u2019t it? I mean, just imagine\u2014Adam\u2019s watching everything go by. He\u2019s going: \u201cCute,\u201d \u201cLittle bit scary\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, he\u2019s just naming them all as they go by. He realizes, at the end: \u201cNot one of them is for me. Not one of them is as I am\u2014made in God\u2019s image.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen and only then, did God cause a great sleep to fall upon Adam. And out of Adam, He made the woman. He didn\u2019t make the woman separate from the man. He made the woman <em>out<\/em> of the man. He made Adam to fall asleep; and out of Adam, He created the woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you\u2019ll notice the very same thing happened\u2014even as God presented <em>all the animals<\/em> to Adam and whatever he named them that was its name\u2014so, also, He presents the woman, now, made out of Adam\u2019s side as the complement \/ the helper\u2014the companion for him. When Adam sees <em>her<\/em>, he says, \u201cThis is now flesh of my flesh and bone of my bones,\u201d\u2014\u201cThis corresponds to me \/ she is as I am. She is made for me\/I am for her,\u201d\u2014\u201cShe shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Part One of a message from Al Mohler, the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, speaking on God\u2019s design for marriage.
