You said, after the end of the broadcast\u2014you turned to me and said, \u201cAre you sure you want to share that on national radio?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, \u201cWe can edit that back out,\u201d\u2014and this is the first week we\u2019re on the air.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I said to Bob\u2014I said, \u201cLook, if I can\u2019t share my humanity and our failures and show people how to apply the Bible to that, then, we don\u2019t have a program\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t have anything to say; do we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because if I\u2019ve always got to share how I did it perfectly, we\u2019re going to run out of material real quickly.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what we are going to hear today is Part Two of a message that you presented when you got a chance to speak to students at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.\u00a0 They took a day at the beginning of the school year, and they brought the students together.\u00a0 They said, \u201cLet\u2019s spend a full day\u201d\u2014they put classes on hold for the day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just have to say, \u201cThis is great leadership,\u201d\u2014not that they asked us to speak and us to be a part of it\u2014but that they made marriage and family a priority at what is, I think, the largest seminary in the world. It is a <em>phenomenal <\/em>statement of priority; and something that has to occur, frankly, in more seminaries across the country and ought to happen in Christian colleges and universities and ought to happen in Christian schools. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe ought to take a day and celebrate marriage and family and talk about it from God\u2019s perspective and talk about how we make it go the distance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, this was an equipping day because you spoke, Dr. Russell Moore spoke, Dr. Al Mohler spoke, C.J. Mahaney spoke. All of you were really pouring into the lives of these young men and women\u2014many of them, in the first years of marriage, facing the challenges of seminary\u2014trying to live on a budget while they parse their Greek vocabulary, and some of them raising kids in the middle of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou shared 40 lessons that you\u2019ve learned from 40 years of marriage to Barbara.\u00a0 And I think we\u2019ve gotten through the first 10 of them already this week. We\u2019re going to pick up where we left off with another one of the principles that you\u2019ve learned over four decades of marriage to Barbara.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat you remember is just as important as what you forget.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really like this one!\u00a0 This is fun.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about collecting stones\u2014spiritual milestones.\u00a0 Why?\u2014because we suffer from spiritual amnesia.\u00a0 When we forget what God has done, we forget who God is; and we forget to trust Him today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI checked my spiritual milestone file in preparation for this message.\u00a0 I started this file in 1998.\u00a0 It has 920 spiritual milestones in it\u2014to God be the glory.\u00a0 They are reminders of the little things, and the big things, that God has done so that\u2014look at Psalm 106\u2014you can see these principles in there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong><br><br>Milestones remind us of three things.\u00a0 Number one:\u00a0 \u201cWhat God has done;\u201d secondly:\u00a0 \u201cWho God is\u2014the truth about God\u2014that He provides, He cares, He delivers;\u201d and third:\u00a0 \u201cTo trust God, to walk by faith, and to not wander into unbelief.\u201d\u00a0 When we forget the deeds of God, we will ultimately forget to trust Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 12:\u00a0 \u201cMarriage was designed by God to be missional.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s the Great Commission\u2014Matthew 28:19 and 20, \u201cGo and make disciples of all the earth.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s Acts 13:36\u2014which I love\u2014that describes David\u2019s life.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAnd after David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to be about the purposes of God, in my generation, <em>with<\/em> my wife.\u00a0 She is a partner in ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not two individual people who are just successfully going our own way.\u00a0 We are two people who work at merging our life purpose and mission together so that we share it, increasingly, as we move toward the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other evening, Barbara and I sat in our living room, in two chairs, that we bought in 1972 for $5 apiece.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been reupholstered three times.\u00a0 We sat in those chairs, talking about, \u201cShould we reupholster them, or go buy new ones?\u201d\u00a0 I turned to her and I said:\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We have not given our lives to stuff.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, do we live in a nice home?\u00a0 Do we live better than we deserve?\u00a0 Absolutely!\u2014but my wife and I, as imperfect as we are \/ as many struggles as we\u2019ve had\u2014we are headed toward the same mission\u2014we are a part of the Great Commission.\u00a0 We want to be fulfilling the great commandment, together, as a couple.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy challenge to you is this:\u00a0 \u201cAs a couple, believe God for too much, rather than too little.\u201d\u00a0 A.W. Tozer said this: \u201cGod is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible.\u00a0 What a pity we plan to do the things we can only do by ourselves.\u201d\u00a0 Why is this so important?\u00a0 Listen to me\u2014because life can wear you down.\u00a0 It can wear you out!\u00a0 Disappointment chips away at faith.\u00a0 As a couple, you have to work on this to go to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 13:\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s okay to have one rookie season; but it\u2019s not okay to repeat it, repeatedly.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to have one rookie season in marriage; it\u2019s not okay to repeat it, repeatedly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was an <em>idiot <\/em>in our first 12 months of marriage\u2014repeatedly, ignoring the dignity of the woman that God had brought me.\u00a0 Those lessons have to be learned and applied.\u00a0 It\u2019s not good to be repeating rookie errors in your 39<sup>th<\/sup> season of marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 14:\u00a0 \u201cNever use the d-word in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 Never!\u00a0 Never use the d-word in your marriage.\u00a0 Never let it cross your lips, ever!\u00a0 Instead, use the c-word\u2014commitment\/ covenant\u2014covenant-keeping love that says, \u201cI\u2019d marry you all over again.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can still remember an argument my parents had when I was five years old, as a little boy, when divorce was not in vogue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour kids are highly sensitized to what your relationship is like and how you do your arguments and your disagreements.\u00a0 Let them hear of your commitment to one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 15\u2014put a star by this one\u2014it\u2019s good enough.\u00a0 It\u2019s in the Ten Commandments: \u201cHonoring our parents brought life to our marriage,\u201d\u2014Exodus 20:12, the first commandment with a promise.\u00a0 We are a generation that has bashed and blamed our parents, ignoring this commandment.\u00a0 It is time for us to return back home to our parents with honor.\u00a0 A practical way you can do that is by writing them a tribute, and then, reading it to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInstead of giving them a dumb dust buster for Christmas, or a tie, or a pair of house slippers, give them something they can hang on the wall, for goodness\u2019 sakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut I might cry.\u201d\u00a0 Good!\u00a0 They spent the first 18 to 20 years of their lives crying\u2014I promise you!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Barbara did this with her parents \/ I did it with mine.\u00a0 Ladies and gentlemen, this is a life-giver!\u00a0 I\u2019ve got God\u2019s Word on it\u2014\u201cThat it may go well with you and you may live a long life in the land which the Lord your God gives you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 16:\u00a0 \u201cDifferent isn\u2019t wrong; it\u2019s just different.\u201d\u00a0 Different isn\u2019t wrong; it\u2019s just different.\u00a0 Your spouse\u2019s differences are not wrong; they\u2019re just different.\u00a0 We marry one another because we\u2019re different, and we divorce each other because we\u2019re different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you\u2014we just moved into this empty-nest phase in the last half dozen years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is so true.\u00a0 Barbara and I are much more different than we ever imagined.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the key\u2014your spouse\u2019s differences are new capacities that He has brought to your life to complete you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told Barbara, about six years ago\u2014because she\u2019s an artist\u2014\u201cWherever you go, you make things beautiful.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t appreciate beauty.\u00a0 I had no idea how beauty reflected the glory of God. Your spouse is God\u2019s added dimension to your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 17:\u00a0 \u201cTalk about the gospel\u2014my marriage and family are redemptive.\u201d\u00a0 They have saved me from toxic self-absorption.\u00a0 The way to have a godly marriage and family is the same path as coming to faith in Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it is surrender\u2014giving up your rights to Him first, and then, to your spouse\u2014serving them.\u00a0 <br><br>I have a confession to make.\u00a0 I mistakenly thought that God gave Barbara and me six children so that we could raise them.\u00a0 I think He gave six children, at least to me, so He could finish the process of helping me grow up.\u00a0 Nothing has taught me more about self-sacrifice than having a family that is attempting\u2014attempting\u2014to follow this Book in loving and leading my children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 18:\u00a0 \u201cYour wife is your number one disciple.\u201d\u00a0 Dr. Bill Bright, Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ\u2014I bet he made that a thousand\u2014made that statement a thousand times, as I worked for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber the orphan.\u00a0 The Father\u2019s heart is with the orphan.\u00a0 When you go near the orphan, as a couple, you go near the Father\u2019s heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlexander Solzhenitsyn said:\u00a0 \u201cThere are two kinds of issues today.\u00a0 There are those issues that are far away\u2014that we watch on TV or hear about in the newspaper or on the internet\u2014and there are those issues that are right up close and personal.\u201d\u00a0 He talked about going near the issue so that you can make a difference.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a global crisis with the orphan\u2014150 million who are fatherless.\u00a0 The church is the only institution on the planet that can even begin to address that size of need.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I went near the orphan, and we adopted.\u00a0 One of our six is adopted.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know which one.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I want to tell you something\u2014someday, we\u2019re going to be able to tell the whole story.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned more about the Father\u2019s heart through adoption\u2014of \u201cchoosing you and loving you.\u201d\u00a0 This is pure and undefiled religion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 20:\u00a0 \u201cMake your home a storm shelter.\u201d\u00a0 Make your home a storm shelter.\u00a0 I grew up in southwest Missouri and spent many a night in a cellar, down with the potatoes and green beans\u2014musty smelling place\u2014all kinds of things, creepy things that lived in there\u2014trying to dodge a tornado that never hit.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize it, but suffering is in the fine print of the marriage covenant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about it for a moment\u2014Matthew, Chapter 7, verse 24 through 27 is the summary of the Sermon on the Mount.\u00a0 It is Jesus Christ\u2019s haymaker.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does He say, and what does He compare all of His teachings to?\u2014two builders of two homes\u2014both in storms.\u00a0 We should get a clue from that\u2014that we\u2019re going to build our marriage, our family, our homes\u2014in the midst of storm warnings, floods, wind, and rain.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara nearly died, on four different occasions, with a heart rate of more than 300 beats a minute.\u00a0 I was wondering what I was going to do with two kids, the first time, under the age of two\u2014then, four\u2014then, six before we got it fixed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a 13-year-old son\u2014our athletic son\u2014being stricken with a rare neurological disorder.\u00a0 He can no longer run.\u00a0 He is crippled.\u00a0 There was a prodigal.\u00a0 There was the day my dad died.\u00a0 There were short paychecks in ministry.\u00a0 There were challenges in my ministry\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014all kinds of issues with people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour marriage covenant is more than just saying, \u201cI do,\u201d for a lifetime.\u00a0 It is for better and for worse.\u00a0 Make your home a storm shelter\u2014a safe place to go in the storm.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 21:\u00a0 \u201cSuffering will either drive you apart, or it will be used by God to merge you together.\u201d\u00a0 All of Scripture is teaching us that our response to God and His Word is the difference-maker in how we handle suffering.\u00a0 You and your spouse have to decide to suffer together rather than falling apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 22:\u00a0 \u201cMen and women process suffering very differently.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSorrow shared is grief divided.\u00a0 It is a wise husband who gives his wife space and grace to process loss and suffering, as a woman, different from how he processes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter Barbara nearly died\u2014the year we started FamilyLife, 1976 and \u201877\u2014and her heart raced over 300 beats a minute\u2014I remember wanting her to just flip a switch and move on with life.\u00a0 Easy for me to say\u2014I hadn\u2019t been the one who was on that cart\u2014that they took away in the ambulance, with her heart beating so fast that the bed was shaking.\u00a0 Give your spouse grace to process grief and suffering differently than you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwenty-three\u2014put a star by this one\u2014for most of you, this may be later in life.\u00a0 For others, it may be just around the corner.\u00a0 \u201cLoss is a part of life and increases as we age.\u201d\u00a0 Loss is a part of life and increases as we age.\u00a0 How you and your spouse process loss, by faith, will determine whether you grow old\u2014blessing others \/ giving life to others\u2014or whether you curse them and become a bitter, crotchety, gripey old person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink with me, for a moment, \u201cHow many old people do you know who still have a vision for life, as they move into their sunset years?\u201d\u00a0 Loss is a part of life.\u00a0 Process it well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019re going to have to interrupt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re in the middle of a message, listening to Dennis Rainey share \u201cForty Lessons from Forty Years of Marriage,\u201d to his wife Barbara.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am noticing that, even without loss, I\u2019m becoming kind of crotchety as I become older\u2014[Laughter]\u2014just a little more gripey.\u00a0 Mary Ann and I are nudging one another\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re kind of getting crotchety and gripey.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what, Bob?\u00a0 Let\u2019s go back and visit another one because somebody, who is getting crotchety \/ somebody who is getting kind of gripey and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019ve got some help for me?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014kind of focusing on self.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go back to\u2014what was it?\u2014number 11\/12 that was\u2014\u201cAs a couple, we need to be missional.\u201d\u00a0 I think, when you are focused outward, as a couple, instead of focused inward, it saves you from yourself.\u00a0 It\u2019s why I love to challenge couples, \u201cWhat are you two, as a couple, going to grow old for?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese are days when a generation of marriages and families hang in the balance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what it needs?\u00a0 It needs some people, who have been married 10 years\u201420,30,40, or longer\u2014to step into the fray and say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We want to make a difference in couples\u2019 lives.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, you\u2019ve been married five years, and you feel like you\u2019ve got a little something to share.\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 Step up \/ share it\u2014grab a tool like what we\u2019ve created, called <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014host a small group for a handful of couples, or host an event, and make a difference in of other people?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There ought to be some kind of mission that you, as a husband and a wife, are lock-step together, wanting to make a difference in the next generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if that\u2019s marriage and family, then, what we\u2019ve tried to do here, at FamilyLife, is put together some tools\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> event kit.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of couples who have hosted Friday night and Saturday events at their church around <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. In fact, we heard of one church that had more than 900 people come out for their <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And we\u2019ve had other couples who have hosted a small group\u2014five or six couples.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing\u2014as a listener, you ought to know more than 600,000 people have now been through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. And this has been translated into Spanish, Mandarin\u2014and is available in China.\u00a0 I mean, we want to make a difference, globally, because family is an international language. It\u2019s the place to start\u2014here in America, I believe\u2014if we are going to rebuild the spiritual and moral backbone of our nation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and the small group material is probably the easiest tool for couples to use because you can call four or five couples you know and say, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you guys come over to the house?\u201d\u2014do a potluck or do a cookout or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014invite them over for dessert. Say: \u201cWe\u2019ve been thinking about going through this video series on marriage with anybody who is interested in going through it.\u00a0 We thought tonight we\u2019d watch the first video and go through some of the questions. You said, after the end of the broadcast\u2014you turned to me and said, \u201cAre you sure you want to share that on national radio?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, \u201cWe can edit that back out,\u201d\u2014and this is the first week we\u2019re on the air.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I said to Bob\u2014I said, \u201cLook, if I can\u2019t share my humanity and our failures and show people how to apply the Bible to that, then, we don\u2019t have a program\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t have anything to say; do we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because if I\u2019ve always got to share how I did it perfectly, we\u2019re going to run out of material real quickly.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what we are going to hear today is Part Two of a message that you presented when you got a chance to speak to students at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.\u00a0 They took a day at the beginning of the school year, and they brought the students together.\u00a0 They said, \u201cLet\u2019s spend a full day\u201d\u2014they put classes on hold for the day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just have to say, \u201cThis is great leadership,\u201d\u2014not that they asked us to speak and us to be a part of it\u2014but that they made marriage and family a priority at what is, I think, the largest seminary in the world. It is a <em>phenomenal <\/em>statement of priority; and something that has to occur, frankly, in more seminaries across the country and ought to happen in Christian colleges and universities and ought to happen in Christian schools. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe ought to take a day and celebrate marriage and family and talk about it from God\u2019s perspective and talk about how we make it go the distance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, this was an equipping day because you spoke, Dr. Russell Moore spoke, Dr. Al Mohler spoke, C.J. Mahaney spoke. All of you were really pouring into the lives of these young men and women\u2014many of them, in the first years of marriage, facing the challenges of seminary\u2014trying to live on a budget while they parse their Greek vocabulary, and some of them raising kids in the middle of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou shared 40 lessons that you\u2019ve learned from 40 years of marriage to Barbara.\u00a0 And I think we\u2019ve gotten through the first 10 of them already this week. We\u2019re going to pick up where we left off with another one of the principles that you\u2019ve learned over four decades of marriage to Barbara.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat you remember is just as important as what you forget.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really like this one!\u00a0 This is fun.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about collecting stones\u2014spiritual milestones.\u00a0 Why?\u2014because we suffer from spiritual amnesia.\u00a0 When we forget what God has done, we forget who God is; and we forget to trust Him today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI checked my spiritual milestone file in preparation for this message.\u00a0 I started this file in 1998.\u00a0 It has 920 spiritual milestones in it\u2014to God be the glory.\u00a0 They are reminders of the little things, and the big things, that God has done so that\u2014look at Psalm 106\u2014you can see these principles in there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong><br><br>Milestones remind us of three things.\u00a0 Number one:\u00a0 \u201cWhat God has done;\u201d secondly:\u00a0 \u201cWho God is\u2014the truth about God\u2014that He provides, He cares, He delivers;\u201d and third:\u00a0 \u201cTo trust God, to walk by faith, and to not wander into unbelief.\u201d\u00a0 When we forget the deeds of God, we will ultimately forget to trust Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 12:\u00a0 \u201cMarriage was designed by God to be missional.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s the Great Commission\u2014Matthew 28:19 and 20, \u201cGo and make disciples of all the earth.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s Acts 13:36\u2014which I love\u2014that describes David\u2019s life.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAnd after David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to be about the purposes of God, in my generation, <em>with<\/em> my wife.\u00a0 She is a partner in ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not two individual people who are just successfully going our own way.\u00a0 We are two people who work at merging our life purpose and mission together so that we share it, increasingly, as we move toward the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other evening, Barbara and I sat in our living room, in two chairs, that we bought in 1972 for $5 apiece.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been reupholstered three times.\u00a0 We sat in those chairs, talking about, \u201cShould we reupholster them, or go buy new ones?\u201d\u00a0 I turned to her and I said:\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We have not given our lives to stuff.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, do we live in a nice home?\u00a0 Do we live better than we deserve?\u00a0 Absolutely!\u2014but my wife and I, as imperfect as we are \/ as many struggles as we\u2019ve had\u2014we are headed toward the same mission\u2014we are a part of the Great Commission.\u00a0 We want to be fulfilling the great commandment, together, as a couple.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy challenge to you is this:\u00a0 \u201cAs a couple, believe God for too much, rather than too little.\u201d\u00a0 A.W. Tozer said this: \u201cGod is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible.\u00a0 What a pity we plan to do the things we can only do by ourselves.\u201d\u00a0 Why is this so important?\u00a0 Listen to me\u2014because life can wear you down.\u00a0 It can wear you out!\u00a0 Disappointment chips away at faith.\u00a0 As a couple, you have to work on this to go to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 13:\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s okay to have one rookie season; but it\u2019s not okay to repeat it, repeatedly.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to have one rookie season in marriage; it\u2019s not okay to repeat it, repeatedly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was an <em>idiot <\/em>in our first 12 months of marriage\u2014repeatedly, ignoring the dignity of the woman that God had brought me.\u00a0 Those lessons have to be learned and applied.\u00a0 It\u2019s not good to be repeating rookie errors in your 39<sup>th<\/sup> season of marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 14:\u00a0 \u201cNever use the d-word in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 Never!\u00a0 Never use the d-word in your marriage.\u00a0 Never let it cross your lips, ever!\u00a0 Instead, use the c-word\u2014commitment\/ covenant\u2014covenant-keeping love that says, \u201cI\u2019d marry you all over again.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can still remember an argument my parents had when I was five years old, as a little boy, when divorce was not in vogue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour kids are highly sensitized to what your relationship is like and how you do your arguments and your disagreements.\u00a0 Let them hear of your commitment to one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 15\u2014put a star by this one\u2014it\u2019s good enough.\u00a0 It\u2019s in the Ten Commandments: \u201cHonoring our parents brought life to our marriage,\u201d\u2014Exodus 20:12, the first commandment with a promise.\u00a0 We are a generation that has bashed and blamed our parents, ignoring this commandment.\u00a0 It is time for us to return back home to our parents with honor.\u00a0 A practical way you can do that is by writing them a tribute, and then, reading it to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInstead of giving them a dumb dust buster for Christmas, or a tie, or a pair of house slippers, give them something they can hang on the wall, for goodness\u2019 sakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut I might cry.\u201d\u00a0 Good!\u00a0 They spent the first 18 to 20 years of their lives crying\u2014I promise you!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Barbara did this with her parents \/ I did it with mine.\u00a0 Ladies and gentlemen, this is a life-giver!\u00a0 I\u2019ve got God\u2019s Word on it\u2014\u201cThat it may go well with you and you may live a long life in the land which the Lord your God gives you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 16:\u00a0 \u201cDifferent isn\u2019t wrong; it\u2019s just different.\u201d\u00a0 Different isn\u2019t wrong; it\u2019s just different.\u00a0 Your spouse\u2019s differences are not wrong; they\u2019re just different.\u00a0 We marry one another because we\u2019re different, and we divorce each other because we\u2019re different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you\u2014we just moved into this empty-nest phase in the last half dozen years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is so true.\u00a0 Barbara and I are much more different than we ever imagined.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the key\u2014your spouse\u2019s differences are new capacities that He has brought to your life to complete you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told Barbara, about six years ago\u2014because she\u2019s an artist\u2014\u201cWherever you go, you make things beautiful.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t appreciate beauty.\u00a0 I had no idea how beauty reflected the glory of God. Your spouse is God\u2019s added dimension to your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 17:\u00a0 \u201cTalk about the gospel\u2014my marriage and family are redemptive.\u201d\u00a0 They have saved me from toxic self-absorption.\u00a0 The way to have a godly marriage and family is the same path as coming to faith in Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it is surrender\u2014giving up your rights to Him first, and then, to your spouse\u2014serving them.\u00a0 <br><br>I have a confession to make.\u00a0 I mistakenly thought that God gave Barbara and me six children so that we could raise them.\u00a0 I think He gave six children, at least to me, so He could finish the process of helping me grow up.\u00a0 Nothing has taught me more about self-sacrifice than having a family that is attempting\u2014attempting\u2014to follow this Book in loving and leading my children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 18:\u00a0 \u201cYour wife is your number one disciple.\u201d\u00a0 Dr. Bill Bright, Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ\u2014I bet he made that a thousand\u2014made that statement a thousand times, as I worked for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 19:\u00a0 \u201cGo near the orphan.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGo near the orphan.\u00a0 The Father\u2019s heart is with the orphan.\u00a0 When you go near the orphan, as a couple, you go near the Father\u2019s heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlexander Solzhenitsyn said:\u00a0 \u201cThere are two kinds of issues today.\u00a0 There are those issues that are far away\u2014that we watch on TV or hear about in the newspaper or on the internet\u2014and there are those issues that are right up close and personal.\u201d\u00a0 He talked about going near the issue so that you can make a difference.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a global crisis with the orphan\u2014150 million who are fatherless.\u00a0 The church is the only institution on the planet that can even begin to address that size of need.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I went near the orphan, and we adopted.\u00a0 One of our six is adopted.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know which one.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I want to tell you something\u2014someday, we\u2019re going to be able to tell the whole story.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned more about the Father\u2019s heart through adoption\u2014of \u201cchoosing you and loving you.\u201d\u00a0 This is pure and undefiled religion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 20:\u00a0 \u201cMake your home a storm shelter.\u201d\u00a0 Make your home a storm shelter.\u00a0 I grew up in southwest Missouri and spent many a night in a cellar, down with the potatoes and green beans\u2014musty smelling place\u2014all kinds of things, creepy things that lived in there\u2014trying to dodge a tornado that never hit.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize it, but suffering is in the fine print of the marriage covenant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about it for a moment\u2014Matthew, Chapter 7, verse 24 through 27 is the summary of the Sermon on the Mount.\u00a0 It is Jesus Christ\u2019s haymaker.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does He say, and what does He compare all of His teachings to?\u2014two builders of two homes\u2014both in storms.\u00a0 We should get a clue from that\u2014that we\u2019re going to build our marriage, our family, our homes\u2014in the midst of storm warnings, floods, wind, and rain.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara nearly died, on four different occasions, with a heart rate of more than 300 beats a minute.\u00a0 I was wondering what I was going to do with two kids, the first time, under the age of two\u2014then, four\u2014then, six before we got it fixed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a 13-year-old son\u2014our athletic son\u2014being stricken with a rare neurological disorder.\u00a0 He can no longer run.\u00a0 He is crippled.\u00a0 There was a prodigal.\u00a0 There was the day my dad died.\u00a0 There were short paychecks in ministry.\u00a0 There were challenges in my ministry\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014all kinds of issues with people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour marriage covenant is more than just saying, \u201cI do,\u201d for a lifetime.\u00a0 It is for better and for worse.\u00a0 Make your home a storm shelter\u2014a safe place to go in the storm.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 21:\u00a0 \u201cSuffering will either drive you apart, or it will be used by God to merge you together.\u201d\u00a0 All of Scripture is teaching us that our response to God and His Word is the difference-maker in how we handle suffering.\u00a0 You and your spouse have to decide to suffer together rather than falling apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 22:\u00a0 \u201cMen and women process suffering very differently.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSorrow shared is grief divided.\u00a0 It is a wise husband who gives his wife space and grace to process loss and suffering, as a woman, different from how he processes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter Barbara nearly died\u2014the year we started FamilyLife, 1976 and \u201877\u2014and her heart raced over 300 beats a minute\u2014I remember wanting her to just flip a switch and move on with life.\u00a0 Easy for me to say\u2014I hadn\u2019t been the one who was on that cart\u2014that they took away in the ambulance, with her heart beating so fast that the bed was shaking.\u00a0 Give your spouse grace to process grief and suffering differently than you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwenty-three\u2014put a star by this one\u2014for most of you, this may be later in life.\u00a0 For others, it may be just around the corner.\u00a0 \u201cLoss is a part of life and increases as we age.\u201d\u00a0 Loss is a part of life and increases as we age.\u00a0 How you and your spouse process loss, by faith, will determine whether you grow old\u2014blessing others \/ giving life to others\u2014or whether you curse them and become a bitter, crotchety, gripey old person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink with me, for a moment, \u201cHow many old people do you know who still have a vision for life, as they move into their sunset years?\u201d\u00a0 Loss is a part of life.\u00a0 Process it well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019re going to I\u2019m becoming kind of crotchety as I become older\u2014[Laughter]\u2014just a little more gripey.\u00a0 Mary Ann and I are nudging one another\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re kind of getting crotchety and gripey.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what, Bob?\u00a0 Let\u2019s go back and visit another one because somebody, who is getting crotchety \/ somebody who is getting kind of gripey and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019ve got some help for me?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014kind of focusing on self.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go back to\u2014what was it?\u2014number 11\/12 that was\u2014\u201cAs a couple, we need to be missional.\u201d\u00a0 I think, when you are focused outward, as a couple, instead of focused inward, it saves you from yourself.\u00a0 It\u2019s why I love to challenge couples, \u201cWhat are you two, as a couple, going to grow old for?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese are days when a generation of marriages and families hang in the balance.\u00a0 who have been married 10 years\u201420,30,40, or longer\u2014to step into the fray and say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We want to make a difference in couples\u2019 lives.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, you\u2019ve been married five years, and you feel like you\u2019ve got a little something to share.\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 Step up \/ share it\u2014grab a tool like what we\u2019ve created, called <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014host a small group for a handful of couples, or host an event, and make a difference in other peoples\u2019 lives.\u00a0 But be on a mission together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Obviously, people are going to have different passions; and so, they may aim their missional selves in a different direction than marriage and family.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 You\u2019re really saying, \u201cAsk God, \u2018Where can we be pouring into the lives of other people?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There ought to be some kind of mission that you, as a husband and a wife, are lock-step together, wanting to make a difference in the next generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if that\u2019s marriage and family, then, what we\u2019ve tried to do here, at FamilyLife, is put together some tools\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> event kit.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of couples who have hosted Friday night and Saturday events at their church around <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. In fact, we heard of one church that had more than 900 people come out for their <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And we\u2019ve had other couples who have hosted a small group\u2014five or six couples.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing\u2014as a listener, you ought to know more than 600,000 people have now been through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. And this has been translated into Spanish, Mandarin\u2014and is available in China.\u00a0 I mean, we want to make a difference, globally, because family is an international language. It\u2019s the place to start\u2014here in America, I believe\u2014if we are going to rebuild the spiritual and moral backbone of our nation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and the small group material is probably the easiest tool for couples to use because you can call four or five couples you know and say, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you guys come over to the house?\u201d\u2014do a potluck or do a cookout or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014invite them over for dessert. Say: \u201cWe\u2019ve been thinking about going through this video series on marriage with anybody who is interested in going through it.\u00a0 We thought tonight we\u2019d watch the first video and go through some of the questions. Then, if you are interested, we can do this again next week or do it again in a couple of weeks.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s really simple.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great way to build relationships with couples you\u2019ve wanted to spend some time with and have some spiritual focus and a marriage focus to what you are doing.
