Your name is on a book!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve not written a book about being a husband, but you have!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition. [Laughter] \u201cIdiot\u201d is a little harsh, though; don\u2019t you think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That might depend upon asking Barbara. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Maybe I should ask her! [Laughter] I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014today, listeners are going to get an opportunity to hear\u2014I refer to this message, many times, as your \u201cgreatest hits.\u201d This is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not singing them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s true. After forty years of marriage, most people ought to have learned a few lessons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They ought to be able to sit down and come up with a handful of things that they\u2019ve learned in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you sat down, you came up with forty things; and you could have kept going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You just decided to quit there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve gone a couple of extra innings here. So, you know, we\u2019ve got more than forty now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell everybody who you shared this message with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I had the privilege of speaking at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. It\u2019s really quite astounding that they gave me the grace, as a Dallas Theological Seminary graduate, to speak at their school; [Laughter] but I did grow up in the Southern Baptist Church. So, they let me in and let me speak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget Al Mohler\u2014who is the president of the seminary\u2014he got up, after I spoke; and he said, \u201cWhat is there left to be said?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, when a guy gives a forty-point sermon, and you\u2019re supposed to follow him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was great! [Laughter] Who would have ever thought that Al Mohler would ever be short of words; but he did a fine job after that\u2014in fact, we ought to share that story with our listeners too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we should; but, today, they\u2019re going to get a chance to hear your reflection on some of the lessons you and Barbara have learned together\u2014about marriage, about parenting, about yourselves, about your walk with Christ\u2014because all of that is wrapped into marriage; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I was discipled by Bill Bright. Bill Bright gave some memorable messages. One of them had like 24 points. I thought, \u201cYou know, why not?\u201d I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever given a message that had 40 points; and I gave this message in one hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In one hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s going to take us more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was on time too\u2014you were there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s going to take us a little while to work our way through this one this week. So, let\u2019s dive in. This is Part One of Dennis Rainey\u2019s \u201cForty Lessons in Forty Years of Marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I frequently get asked, \u201cHow\u2019s your family doing?\u201d To answer that question is a little difficult because, you see, Barbara and I have six children\u2014five of whom are married\u2014and we have 19 grandkids. So, we\u2019ve got a lot of humanity in our family. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a little bit of everything taking place in our family. When I sat where you sit, a number of years ago, and was starting my ministry and my family, I had no idea what God had in store for Barbara and for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I thought about coming here to spend these moments with you, I thought, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be good to reflect back on 40 years of what God has taught us as a couple?\u201d I\u2019m reminded of the quote by D.L. Moody, who described Moses. He said, \u201cMoses spent the first 40 years thinking he was somebody; the second 40 years finding out he was a nobody; and the last 40 years finding out how God could take a nobody and use him for His purposes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as I share these \u201cForty Lessons from Forty Years of Marriage, Family, and Ministry\u201d with you, these are shared in the spirit of how God has taken a couple of nobodies; and how He took two broken, imperfect people, who have fouled up in so many ways, and He has used them as vessels to accomplish His purposes. To God be the glory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one lesson: \u201cMarriage and family are about the glory of God.\u201d Genesis 1:26-28 makes it clear, \u201cIn the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.\u201d The Book begins with a marriage. The Book ends with a marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is central to God\u2019s glory on planet earth. What God designed, and lifted up, and gave a transcendent purpose, man has dumbed down to make it this statement of happiness and, \u201cFinding another person who meets my needs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage has a transcendent cause of reflecting God to a fallen world. Make note of this as you begin your ministry: Your marriage \/ your covenant-keeping love will be your greatest witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the coming decades. It\u2019s falling apart rapidly. God created marriage to reflect His image, to reproduce a godly heritage, and He created a couple to rule together in spiritual battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s about the glory of God, not about the happiness of man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: \u201cYour marriage, then, is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony.\u201d\u00a0 Satan\u2019s first attack on the image of God was to destroy the image-bearers\u2019 relationship with God and then their relationship with one another. If he targeted marriage to begin with, why would we think our marriage would be any different?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA.W. Tozer believed that \u201cFar too few Christians ever get into lion country.\u201d For those of us who <em>do<\/em> get into lion country \/ in ministry\u2014I think, all too often, we forget that our marriage \/ our family can be targeted by the enemy to destroy the image-bearers and to destroy the legacy that is passed on to future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is under attack today, in its definition, because of <em>who <\/em>created marriage\u2014God. We are in a <em>fierce<\/em> spiritual battle. You are walking off into a battlefield that is littered with casualties. Your marriage is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber three: \u201cTherefore, your spouse is <em>not <\/em>your enemy.\u201d Ephesians, Chapter 6, verses 10-12 tell us that \u201cOur battle is not against flesh and blood.\u201d That is true in the Word of God; but I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014if you\u2019re married today, you\u2019ve looked across the sheets, in the morning, at your enemy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve said, \u201cWhat did you do, God, in bringing us together?\u201d I promise you, I\u2019ve had those thoughts; but the Scriptures tell us your mate is not your enemy. Your mate is a gift from God to you. In all his imperfections \/ in all her imperfections, God has given you a gift. You can either receive it by faith, or you can reject it. You can be deceived by the enemy to think, \u201cMy mate is, indeed, my enemy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four\u2014and it sounds a little like a slogan from the 50s: \u201cThe couple that prays together stays together.\u201d In the first months of our marriage, I went to a friend, whose name was Carl Wilson. He was a great Presbyterian preacher and a good friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to him and said: \u201cCarl, you\u2019ve been married 25 years. You\u2019ve got five kids. What\u2019s the best single piece of advice you can give me, as a young man, who\u2019s just starting out his marriage?\u201d We\u2019d been married about four months at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy. Pray with your wife every day.\u201d I said: \u201cThat\u2019s it? \u2018Pray with your wife\u2019?\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d So, I went home; and we started praying together. It worked really well for a couple of months. Then, one night, we went to bed. She was facing <em>that <\/em>wall, and I was facing <em>that <\/em>wall. It wasn\u2019t what was most comfortable, physically, but spiritually and emotionally. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a tap on my shoulder, and it wasn\u2019t Barbara. God was speaking to me in my conscience. He said: \u201cHey, Rainey!\u00a0 Aren\u2019t you going to pray with her tonight?\u201d I said, \u201cNo. I don\u2019t like her tonight, God!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes, but you made the commitment to pray every day with your wife.\u201d\u00a0 And I go, \u201cBut God, you know that in this situation, <em>she<\/em> is 90 percent wrong!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod said, \u201cYes, but it was your 10 percent that caused her to be 90 percent wrong.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] So, I\u2019d wrestle with the angel of God there for a few moments. I would roll over; and I would tap her on the shoulder and say, \u201cSweetheart, will you forgive me for being 10 percent wrong?\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo not do that, guys! [Laughter] I did that one night, and that night lasted for two days! No, I will roll over and I will say to her, \u201cWill you forgive me for...?\u201d\u2014and I\u2019ll be specific. And those words get caught right here [pointing to throat]. I do not believe I would be standing here, giving this message today, had it not been for the advice of that mentor in the first four months of my marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are two strong-willed, stubborn, rebellious people\u2014but two strong-willed people, who bow their wills before Almighty God on a daily basis and invite Him into their presence, <em>will be changed<\/em>. It will change the course of your marriage, your ministry, and your legacy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber five: \u201cIsolation is a subtle killer of relationships.\u201d Genesis 2:18-25 gives us the prescription of Scripture: \u201cLeave, cleave, and become\u201d\u2014what? \u2014\u201cone.\u201d Two leave to commit and to cleave to become what?\u2014to become one! But the enemy of our souls wants to divide us because, in isolation, you can be convinced of anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow important is oneness? John 17 points it out. Jesus prayed for the church to be one. Why?\u2014because we\u2019re <em>naturally<\/em> divided. Isolation is a killer of relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber six: \u201cIt\u2019s a whole lot easier for two broken people to build a marriage and a family from the same set of biblical blueprints than from two different sets of blueprints.\u201d\u00a0 Let me warn you, at this point\u2014just because you\u2019re going to seminary and you\u2019re getting a biblical set of blueprints for life and living, doesn\u2019t mean that, by osmosis, it\u2019s going to be absorbed by your spouse. One of the great tragedies in ministry\u2014after one year, two years, three years, four years, or more of getting a theological education\u2014is for a seminary graduate to turn around and to take his spouse\u2019s hand\u2014or her spouse\u2019s hand\u2014and to find them not there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is why, for the last 37 years, we have had the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. If you haven\u2019t been to this, together, with your spouse, GO! Why? Your marriage, your ministry, and your legacy may be at stake. What would a physical house look like if you had two different architects, two different builders, and two different sets of blueprints? You\u2019d get some pretty funny-looking houses; wouldn\u2019t you? Get the same set of blueprints and build from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber seven: \u201cIt is healthy to confess my sins to my spouse.\u201d James 5 reminds us, \u201cConfess your sins to one another that\u201d\u2014what?\u2014\u201cyou may be healed.\u201d If you want to be healthy, develop a marriage relationship where the other has access to the interior of your soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStruggling with bitterness over a betrayal?\u2014I\u2019ve been through that. I\u2019ve asked Barbara, \u201cPray for me!\u201d Maybe, you\u2019re struggling with an attitude \/ maybe a sense of rebellion; maybe you\u2019re toying with something you shouldn\u2019t be toying with\u2014bring your wife into the interior of your soul and invite her to share so that you may be healed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber eight\u2014put a star by this one: \u201cIt is categorically impossible to experience marriage as God designed it without being liberal and lavish in your forgiveness of one another.\u201d Ephesians 4:32: \u201c...forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has forgiven you.\u201d Failing to forgive \/ failing to ask for forgiveness kills oneness, and unity, and life in a marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love this statement by Ruth Bell Graham: \u201cMarriage is the union of two forgivers.\u201d Why is this true?\u2014because forgiveness means we give up the right to punish the other person. There are plenty of things, either committed or omitted, in a marriage relationship, where you\u2019re going to have to give up the right to punish the other person. Bitterness does not create oneness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber nine: \u201cThe greatest threat in any marriage is losing a teachable heart.\u201d\u00a0 Proverbs, Chapter 4, verse 23 reminds us, \u201cGuard your heart, for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmericans are preoccupied and scared of having a heart attack\u2014why?\u2014because there\u2019s a simple equation\u2014if the heart dies, you die. Well, you know what? The Bible is filled with references to our heart. In fact, the Great Commandment is one that calls our heart to love God, totally and fully, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPay attention to your heart. Guard it lest it become hardened or you have hardening of the arteries of the heart. Just because you\u2019re in the Book and in a seminary like this, doesn\u2019t exempt you from that kind of heart disease. Spiritually, protect a heart that can become hardened and isn\u2019t teachable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question: \u201cAre you approachable? When\u2019s the last time you asked your spouse to forgive you? When\u2019s the last time you listened to a child, who, maybe, had been hurt by you, and how that impacted him or her?\u201d A teachable heart is a spongy heart\u2014it\u2019s a spiritually-receptive heart. Guard it!\u2014\u201c\u2026for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber ten: \u201cEvery couple needs a mentor couple, who is one lap ahead of them in the season of life.\u201d Who\u2019s your couple? Who\u2019s your person? If you\u2019re a newlywed, you need someone to coach you on the habits you establish at the beginning of your marriage. If you\u2019re starting out with your kids, you need someone just to say: \u201cYou know what? This is normal. This is the way it happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, if you\u2019re moving into the empty nest with adult children, I\u2019ve got news for you. You <em>really <\/em>need a mentor in that phase!\u00a0 Relating to adult children has been more challenging than the terrible two\u2019s\u2014[Laughter]\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not because our kids are bad kids. It just didn\u2019t turn out the way I envisioned it\u2014like a Norman Rockwell painting!\u00a0 Who\u2019s your mentor? This is challenging, as you get older, because your mentors die. Be careful about who\u2019s speaking into your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re having to break in here. We are listening today to Part One of a message from Dennis Rainey on \u201cLesson Learned on Marriage and Parenting\u201d after forty laps around the track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the adult children piece that I just said\u2014you know, the lessons learned are on the side of Barbara and me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re the ones learning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness! I mean, it\u2019s a new assignment; you know? Who\u2019s ever been there before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know exactly what I thought it would be like; but, you know, it\u2019s interesting to take your hands off and let your children establish their own marriages \/ their own families and allow them to leave \/ allow them to cleave; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I think one of the points you make there is that, during different stages of the life of a family\u2014early parenting; parenting in the golden years; and the teen years, when you start letting go; when you reach the empty nest\u2014your marriage has to be recalibrated throughout those stages. I mean, as you move into different stages in a family, your marriage makes a transition too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it has to be built to outlast your children. I\u2019m sure I make that point somewhere in here because it has to be built to outlast your children. And one of the key things that will help it do that is if the husband and the wife have a common mission\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if they\u2019re doing something together that makes a difference in other peoples\u2019 lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, it\u2019s why, for over four years, we\u2019ve pounded the table, here, saying to folks, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you get <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>? Host a small group \/ host an event\u2014whatever you want to do\u2014but get five or six couples or get thirty or forty couples and get them together and take them through a resource that can change their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve heard back from lots of couples who have gone through this material with other couples. We\u2019ve asked them, \u201cWould you recommend this to friends of yours?\u201d The interesting thing is, as we\u2019ve done the surveys on this, 97 percent have said, \u201cWe would recommend this material.\u201d I think folks really are surprised when they go through the video series because it\u2019s not a talking head. After forty years of marriage, most people ought to have learned a few lessons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They ought to be able to sit down and come up with a handful of things that they\u2019ve learned in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you sat down, you came up with forty things; and you could have kept going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You just decided to quit there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve gone a couple of extra innings here. So, you know, we\u2019ve got more than forty now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell everybody who you shared this message with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I had the privilege of speaking at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. It\u2019s really quite astounding that they gave me the grace, as a Dallas Theological Seminary graduate, to speak at their school; [Laughter] but I did grow up in the Southern Baptist Church. So, they let me in and let me speak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget Al Mohler\u2014who is the president of the seminary\u2014he got up, after I spoke; and he said, \u201cWhat is there left to be said?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, when a guy gives a forty-point sermon, and you\u2019re supposed to follow him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was great! [Laughter] Who would have ever thought that Al Mohler would ever be short of words; but he did a fine job after that\u2014in fact, we ought to share that story with our listeners too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we should; but, today, they\u2019re going to get a chance to hear your reflection on some of the lessons you and Barbara have learned together\u2014about marriage, about parenting, about yourselves, about your walk with Christ\u2014because all of that is wrapped into marriage; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I was discipled by Bill Bright. Bill Bright gave some memorable messages. One of them had like 24 points. I thought, \u201cYou know, why not?\u201d I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever given a message that had 40 points; and I gave this message in one hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In one hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s going to take us more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was on time too\u2014you were there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s going to take us a little while to work our way through this one this week. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a little bit of everything taking place in our family. When I sat where you sit, a number of years ago, and was starting my ministry and my family, I had no idea what God had in store for Barbara and for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I thought about coming here to spend these moments with you, I thought, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be good to reflect back on 40 years of what God has taught us as a couple?\u201d I\u2019m reminded of the quote by D.L. Moody, who described Moses. He said, \u201cMoses spent the first 40 years thinking he was somebody; the second 40 years finding out he was a nobody; and the last 40 years finding out how God could take a nobody and use him for His purposes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as I share these \u201cForty Lessons from Forty Years of Marriage, Family, and Ministry\u201d with you, these are shared in the spirit of how God has taken a couple of nobodies; and how He took two broken, imperfect people, who have fouled up in so many ways, and He has used them as vessels to accomplish His purposes. To God be the glory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one lesson: \u201cMarriage and family are about the glory of God.\u201d Genesis 1:26-28 makes it clear, \u201cIn the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.\u201d The Book begins with a marriage. The Book ends with a marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is central to God\u2019s glory on planet earth. What God designed, and lifted up, and gave a transcendent purpose, man has dumbed down to make it this statement of happiness and, \u201cFinding another person who meets my needs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage has a transcendent cause of reflecting God to a fallen world. Make note of this as you begin your ministry: Your marriage \/ your covenant-keeping love will be your greatest witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the coming decades. It\u2019s falling apart rapidly. God created marriage to reflect His image, to reproduce a godly heritage, and He created a couple to rule together in spiritual battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s about the glory of God, not about the happiness of man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two: \u201cYour marriage, then, is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony.\u201d\u00a0 Satan\u2019s first attack on the image of God was to destroy the image-bearers\u2019 relationship with God and then their relationship with one another. If he targeted marriage to begin with, why would we think our marriage would be any different?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA.W. Tozer believed that \u201cFar too few Christians ever get into lion country.\u201d For those of us who <em>do<\/em> get into lion country \/ in ministry\u2014I think, all too often, we forget that our marriage \/ our family can be targeted by the enemy to destroy the image-bearers and to destroy the legacy that is passed on to future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage is under attack today, in its definition, because of <em>who <\/em>created marriage\u2014God. We are in a <em>fierce<\/em> spiritual battle. You are walking off into a battlefield that is littered with casualties. Your marriage is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber three: \u201cTherefore, your spouse is <em>not <\/em>your enemy.\u201d Ephesians, Chapter 6, verses 10-12 tell us that \u201cOur battle is not against flesh and blood.\u201d That is true in the Word of God; but I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014if you\u2019re married today, you\u2019ve looked across the sheets, in the morning, at your enemy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve said, \u201cWhat did you do, God, in bringing us together?\u201d I promise you, I\u2019ve had those thoughts; but the Scriptures tell us your mate is not your enemy. Your mate is a gift from God to you. In all his imperfections \/ in all her imperfections, God has given you a gift. You can either receive it by faith, or you can reject it. You can be deceived by the enemy to think, \u201cMy mate is, indeed, my enemy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four\u2014and it sounds a little like a slogan from the 50s: \u201cThe couple that prays together stays together.\u201d In the first months of our marriage, I went to a friend, whose name was Carl Wilson. He was a great Presbyterian preacher and a good friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to him and said: \u201cCarl, you\u2019ve been married 25 years. You\u2019ve got five kids. What\u2019s the best single piece of advice you can give me, as a young man, who\u2019s just starting out his marriage?\u201d We\u2019d been married about four months at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said: \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy. Pray with your wife every day.\u201d I said: \u201cThat\u2019s it? \u2018Pray with your wife\u2019?\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u201d So, I went home; and we started praying together. It worked really well for a couple of months. Then, one night, we went to bed. She was facing <em>that <\/em>wall, and I was facing <em>that <\/em>wall. It wasn\u2019t what was most comfortable, physically, but spiritually and emotionally. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a tap on my shoulder, and it wasn\u2019t Barbara. God was speaking to me in my conscience. He said: \u201cHey, Rainey!\u00a0 Aren\u2019t you going to pray with her tonight?\u201d I said, \u201cNo. I don\u2019t like her tonight, God!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes, but you made the commitment to pray every day with your wife.\u201d\u00a0 And I go, \u201cBut God, you know that in this situation, <em>she<\/em> is 90 percent wrong!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod said, \u201cYes, but it was your 10 percent that caused her to be 90 percent wrong.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] So, I\u2019d wrestle with the angel of God there for a few moments. I would roll over; and I would tap her on the shoulder and say, \u201cSweetheart, will you forgive me for being 10 percent wrong?\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo not do that, guys! [Laughter] I did that one night, and that night lasted for two days! No, I will roll over and I will say to her, \u201cWill you forgive me for...?\u201d\u2014and I\u2019ll be specific. And those words get caught right here [pointing to throat]. I do not believe I would be standing here, giving this message today, had it not been for the advice of that mentor in the first four months of my marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are two strong-willed, stubborn, rebellious people\u2014but two strong-willed people, who bow their wills before Almighty God on a daily basis and invite Him into their presence, <em>will be changed<\/em>. It will change the course of your marriage, your ministry, and your legacy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber five: \u201cIsolation is a subtle killer of relationships.\u201d Genesis 2:18-25 gives us the prescription of Scripture: \u201cLeave, cleave, and become\u201d\u2014what? \u2014\u201cone.\u201d Two leave to commit and to cleave to become what?\u2014to become one! But the enemy of our souls wants to divide us because, in isolation, you can be convinced of anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow important is oneness? John 17 points it out. Jesus prayed for the church to be one. Why?\u2014because we\u2019re <em>naturally<\/em> divided. Isolation is a killer of relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber six: \u201cIt\u2019s a whole lot easier for two broken people to build a marriage and a family from the same set of biblical blueprints than from two different sets of blueprints.\u201d\u00a0 Let me warn you, at this point\u2014just because you\u2019re going to seminary and you\u2019re getting a biblical set of blueprints for life and living, doesn\u2019t mean that, by osmosis, it\u2019s going to be absorbed by your spouse. One of the great tragedies in ministry\u2014after one year, two years, three years, four years, or more of getting a theological education\u2014is for a seminary graduate to turn around and to take his spouse\u2019s hand\u2014or her spouse\u2019s hand\u2014and to find them not there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is why, for the last 37 years, we have had the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. If you haven\u2019t been to this, together, with your spouse, GO! Why? Your marriage, your ministry, and your legacy may be at stake. What would a physical house look like if you had two different architects, two different builders, and two different sets of blueprints? You\u2019d get some pretty funny-looking houses; wouldn\u2019t you? Get the same set of blueprints and build from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber seven: \u201cIt is healthy to confess my sins to my spouse.\u201d James 5 reminds us, \u201cConfess your sins to one another that\u201d\u2014what?\u2014\u201cyou may be healed.\u201d If you want to be healthy, develop a marriage relationship where the other has access to the interior of your soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStruggling with bitterness over a betrayal?\u2014I\u2019ve been through that. I\u2019ve asked Barbara, \u201cPray for me!\u201d Maybe, you\u2019re struggling with an attitude \/ maybe a sense of rebellion; maybe you\u2019re toying with something you shouldn\u2019t be toying with\u2014bring your wife into the interior of your soul and invite her to share so that you may be healed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber eight\u2014put a star by this one: \u201cIt is categorically impossible to experience marriage as God designed it without being liberal and lavish in your forgiveness of one another.\u201d Ephesians 4:32: \u201c...forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has forgiven you.\u201d Failing to forgive \/ failing to ask for forgiveness kills oneness, and unity, and life in a marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love this statement by Ruth Bell Graham: \u201cMarriage is the union of two forgivers.\u201d Why is this true?\u2014because forgiveness means we give up the right to punish the other person. There are plenty of things, either committed or omitted, in a marriage relationship, where you\u2019re going to have to give up the right to punish the other person. Bitterness does not create oneness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber nine: \u201cThe greatest threat in any marriage is losing a teachable heart.\u201d\u00a0 Proverbs, Chapter 4, verse 23 reminds us, \u201cGuard your heart, for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmericans are preoccupied and scared of having a heart attack\u2014why?\u2014because there\u2019s a simple equation\u2014if the heart dies, you die. Well, you know what? The Bible is filled with references to our heart. In fact, the Great Commandment is one that calls our heart to love God, totally and fully, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPay attention to your heart. Guard it lest it become hardened or you have hardening of the arteries of the heart. Just because you\u2019re in the Book and in a seminary like this, doesn\u2019t exempt you from that kind of heart disease. Spiritually, protect a heart that can become hardened and isn\u2019t teachable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question: \u201cAre you approachable? When\u2019s the last time you asked your spouse to forgive you? When\u2019s the last time you listened to a child, who, maybe, had been hurt by you, and how that impacted him or her?\u201d A teachable heart is a spongy heart\u2014it\u2019s a spiritually-receptive heart. Guard it!\u2014\u201c\u2026for from it flow the wellsprings of life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber ten: \u201cEvery couple needs a mentor couple, who is one lap ahead of them in the season of life.\u201d Who\u2019s your couple? Who\u2019s your person? If you\u2019re a newlywed, you need someone to coach you on the habits you establish at the beginning of your marriage. If you\u2019re starting out with your kids, you need someone just to say: \u201cYou know what? This is normal. This is the way it happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, if you\u2019re moving into the empty nest with adult children, I\u2019ve got news for you. You <em>really <\/em>need a mentor in that phase!\u00a0 Relating to adult children has been more challenging than the terrible two\u2019s\u2014[Laughter]\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not because our kids are bad kids. It just didn\u2019t turn out the way I envisioned it\u2014like a Norman Rockwell painting!\u00a0 Who\u2019s your mentor? This is challenging, as you get older, because your mentors die. Be careful about who\u2019s speaking into your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re having to break in here. We are listening today to Part One of a message from Dennis Rainey on \u201cLesson Learned on Marriage and Parenting\u201d after forty laps around the track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the adult children piece that I just said\u2014you know, the lessons learned are on the side of Barbara and me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re the ones learning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness! I mean, it\u2019s a new assignment; you know? Who\u2019s ever been there before?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know exactly what I thought it would be like; but, you know, it\u2019s interesting to take your hands off and let your children establish their own marriages \/ their own families and allow them to leave \/ allow them to cleave; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I think one of the points you make there is that, during different stages of the life of a family\u2014early parenting; parenting in the golden years; and the teen years, when you start letting go; when you reach the empty nest\u2014your marriage has to be recalibrated throughout those stages. I mean, as you move into different stages in a family, your marriage makes a transition too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it has to be built to outlast your children. I\u2019m sure I make that point somewhere in here because it has to be built to outlast your children. And one of the key things that will help it do that is if the husband and the wife have a common mission\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if they\u2019re doing something together that makes a difference in other peoples\u2019 lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, it\u2019s why, for over four years, we\u2019ve pounded the table, here, saying to folks, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you get <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>? Host a small group \/ host an event\u2014whatever you want to do\u2014but get five or six couples or get thirty or forty couples and get them together and take them through a resource that can change their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve heard back from lots of couples who have gone through this material with other couples. We\u2019ve asked them, \u201cWould you recommend this to friends of yours?\u201d The interesting thing is, as we\u2019ve done the surveys on this, 97 percent have said, \u201cWe would recommend this material.\u201d I think folks really are surprised when they go through the video series because it\u2019s not a talking head.
