We\u2019re going to hear today Part One from Karen about the gifts a husband can give to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford: <\/strong>Well, Sweetheart, I want to say in front of all of these people that I\u2019m here to listen to you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> We\u2019ve been married now for 43 years. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s the absolute joy of my life. I actually met her when I was in college, just before the beginning of my sophomore year. Two weeks before I went back on campus, my high school sweetheart broke up with me. I was in my dorm room praying\u2014this is a true story\u2014I went to a Christian college. I was in my dorm room, praying\u2014I was on my knees. I said: \u201cGod, no more women! No more women\u2014they mess you up every time. I\u2019m going to stay focused this semester\u2014just you and me, Jesus. I\u2019m going to be all zeroed in and not distracted.\u201d Anybody that knows me knows that I can be fairly focused once my mind is made up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up off of my knees, after that deep-seated, stalwart, single-minded commitment to Jesus\u2014to be focused and not to date \/ not to be distracted because I needed to heal. I walked down the street to the main administration building. Again, my mind was recycling and going over this deep-seated commitment I\u2019d made to Jesus. I opened the door of the main administration building, and there were these two brown legs at the top of the stairs. [Laughter] I said, \u201cLord, what have we here?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI learned an incredible life-long lesson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Oh, my word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> Never make foolish vows! [Laughter] Those legs belonged to Karen. She was new on campus, and my mama taught me to be hospitable to strangers. So, I said, \u201cI\u2019m your tour guide.\u201d [Laughter] I have been showing her around now for 43 years. She\u2019s the joy of my life! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> My parents had been married for 53 years before my dad passed away and went to be with the Lord. What an incredible marriage God gave them. They lived by vows, and I\u2019m really indebted to them. I\u2019ll never forget the last year that he was alive\u2014he was suffering from congestive heart failure and a number of other issues. They lived in Roanoke, Virginia; and we lived in Atlanta. I was helping them with some of their affairs, and I was up visiting them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had just sold the house\u2014it was a large house. Mom had arthritis and getting around that thing was quite the challenge. They were living in a small apartment. I\u2019ll never forget this. It was about\u2014I would say\u20141:30-2 o\u2019clock in the morning. For some reason, I couldn\u2019t sleep. The bedroom doors were open, and I was in the little bedroom right next to theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of a sudden, I heard my dad say: \u201cOh, Sylvia, I couldn\u2019t make it. I\u2019m so sorry. I couldn\u2019t make it.\u201d You see, what had happened was my father was moving slowly at that point. He had to go to the bathroom, and he had gotten up and he couldn\u2019t make it. He\u2019d had an accident. Listen to what my mother said\u2014I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014she said to him: \u201cCrawford, that ain\u2019t nothing\u2014we\u2019re married. I\u2019ll clean it up.\u201d The tears began to trickle down my cheeks because, right in that moment, my mind just flashed back as\u2014as they lived out their commitment to one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Karen and I will be talking to you and talking about the gifts that we give to one another, I want you to keep this principle in the back of your heart and mind. One of the great problems of our marriages today is that we\u2019re too terribly pragmatic. We\u2019re not <em>noble<\/em> enough. I know that\u2019s a word that\u2019s not used often, but we\u2019ve lost the <em>nobility<\/em> of commitment and the <em>nobility<\/em> of sacrifice. So here\u2019s the principle: \u201cThe richness of your marriage is in direct proportion to the sacrifices that you make for one another.\u201d The richness of your marriage is in direct proportion to the sacrifices that you make for one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Karen\u2019s going to come and talk about the seven gifts that every man needs to give to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Ladies, I want to talk a few minutes to the men. I need for the men to jot these seven gifts down. Ladies, I want you not peeking over their shoulders\u2014not nudging them. Let them write this list for themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese are the seven gifts, men\u2014that I would like to offer that you give to your wife. The first gift is godliness. One of the things that speaks to the heart of a wife is that her husband is seeking the heart of God. Knowing and growing in a loving personal relationship with Jesus is the best gift\u2014the number one gift, guys\u2014that you can give your wife. She needs to know that you love God more than her and that you will do anything to make that relationship tell the truth about their personal relationship with God. So, the first gift is godliness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the second gift, guys\u2014is unconditional love. In the book of Ephesians, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 5, verse 25, it says: \u201cHusbands, love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. Love her as you would your own body.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, 43 years ago, Crawford looked into my eyes and he made a vow\u2014just like your husband did\u2014to love and cherish in sickness and in health, for better\/for worse, for richer\/for poorer til death do you part. Now, guys, he made that commitment 43 years ago. Little did he realize, when he married me, he was marrying a person that had a lot of excess baggage. I came from the ghettos of Philadelphia\u2014lived in projects\u2014the product of an unfaithful mother, as a teenager, who gave birth to me. I came into this marriage, wanting to be a wife; but I was clueless of what it meant to be a wife. This man loved me! I was bitter \/ I was angry. I had no way of knowing what it really meant to be a wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he loved me when our little girl died. Through my own selfishness, I would not let him grieve. He loved me through the pain of this lost child\u2014he kept his vows. I love \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Corinthians, Chapter 13. Guys, let me suggest that you take some time and read through 1 Corinthians, verses 4-8. Ask yourself a question: \u201cIs my love for my wife as described in 1 Corinthians 13?\u2014that unconditional love that my wife needs?\u201d A man who really loves his wife\u2014he will love her <em>unconditionally<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA third gift is the gift of understanding. This is what it says in 1 Peter, Chapter 3, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tverse 7: \u201cLikewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe authors of the book, <em>Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti, <\/em>describes for most women\u2014they describe it this way: \u201cEvery thought and issue is connected to every other thought and issue in some way. Life is much more of a process for women.\u201d So, men, let me just give you, under the guise of understanding your wife, four \u201cT\u2019s\u201d\u2014four \u201cT\u2019s.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first \u201cT\u201d is time. Several years ago, when we dropped off our last child to college, I went through an emotional meltdown. I went through this whole thing about the empty nest, and I was a hot mess. Can I say that? I was a hot mess! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> I cried and I sobbed. I didn\u2019t know what was happening, but what I needed from Crawford\u2014to understand me\u2014what I was going through\u2014was I needed time to build the relationship\u2014to help me through the healing process. In the midst of this empty nest thing I was going through\u2014menopause\u2014menopause\u2014menopause! My insides were like a <em>hot <\/em>furnace. I would just be hot and cold\u2014it was just a terrible time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only thing I needed from Crawford, even though he didn\u2019t understand, I just needed him to <em>pretend<\/em> that he was understanding by giving me time\u2014appropriate time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother \u201cT\u201d is\u2014guys, you have to be tender. Give her tenderness. When your wife goes and has her mammogram\u2014you know that mammogram that wives have? [Laughter] Don\u2019t just say, \u201cOh, you\u2019re just going to the doctor.\u201d It is a <em>painful <\/em>experience as part of this whole process. I had a call-back on my mammogram. I had Crawford go with me because I wanted him to experience what I was going through. We go through an awful lot; don\u2019t we girls? We go through an awful lot! We need, not only time, but we need for you to be <em>tender<\/em> as we\u2019re going through it. Be sympathetic\/empathize with us\u2014encourage us. Don\u2019t tell us to \u201cJust get over it,\u201d\u2014don\u2019t say that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother \u201cT\u201d is being thoughtful\u2014being thoughtful. You know, my love language is\u2014Crawford gives me flowers \/ he gives me notes and all kinds of good things\u2014but do you know what my love language is? \u201cTake out the garbage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust take out the garbage!\u201d [Laughter] So, being thoughtful means you need to do what you need to do\u2014be helpful. I\u2019m working eight hours a day. When I come home, dinner may not be ready. Now, in our house, Crawford has threatened to get rid of the stove; but I put in my thirty-something years of cooking. So, now there\u2019s an empty nest; we can go out a little bit more\u2014be thoughtful on the changes and the seasons in life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe last \u201cT\u201d about understanding is talking. Listen, guys\u2014save some words for when you get home. \u201cPut on your listening ears,\u201d\u2014Judge Judy\u2014\u201cPut on your listening ears and just listen.\u201d We don\u2019t need for you to always want to fix it! When I was going through my emotional meltdown, I didn\u2019t tell Crawford a lot of the things I was going through because he wanted to fix it. I wanted to work it out myself! Is that true? I\u2019m just saying. I\u2019m just saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne little last thing, guys\u2014the process of understanding starts in the morning. If you want to have good fellowship at night, you\u2019d better start early\u2014understanding. [Laughter\/Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth gift is to be a provider. Men, we need for you to provide. One of the things I <em>loved <\/em>\/I just absolutely <em>loved<\/em> about Crawford\u2019s dad is that, for 40-something years, he worked in the A&amp;P Warehouse in New Jersey. He showed his family that, no matter what\u2014whether it\u2019s the night shift or the day shift\u2014that work was what God had called him to do. It wasn\u2019t about building a big bank account or having the greatest place to live; but just being able to have an honest day\u2019s salary for an honest day\u2019s work and to provide for his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what 1 Timothy, Chapter 5, verse 8 says: \u201cBut if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.\u201d Let me ask you a question, guys: \u201cHave you provided for your wife and family should you die before her?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fifth gift is the gift of protection. Men, let me tell you that there are relationship bullies that are ready to go against your wife and your family. I mean, it can be anything from your children\u2014disrespectful children in your home\u2014that talk to your wife any ol\u2019 kind of way\u2014interfering parents, interfering in-laws, interfering co-workers. Lots of people, even within the church, want to interfere. You need to protect her\u2014she is the queen of the house. Are you protecting her the way God has asked you to do? [Applause] You need to be that bullet-proof vest around her heart and her mind\u2014that she knows you are there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians, Chapter 5, again, says a great reminder: \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself and nourishes her and protects her.\u201d There is no doubt in my mind that Crawford is my protector. Does your wife know that you will protect her, even sometimes from herself when she seems overwhelmed by the stresses of life? You need to step in and be the voice of common sense and wisdom sometimes. I\u2019m just saying, we need for you to be the protector.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe sixth gift is the gift of trust\u2014it\u2019s the gift of trust. I like what it says in \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 84, verses 11 and 12: \u201cFor the Lord God is a sun and shield. The Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. Oh, Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in You.\u201d God promises you that, when you walk uprightly \/ if you trust Him\u2014and, ladies, we know that trust from our guys is a biggie; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, we need to know that you can be trusted. We understand\u2014sometimes, if someone has hurt you, guys, or mistrusted you, or violated a trust that you\u2019ve given\u2014it hurts you\u2014the same way with us. We want to know that you will not violate your vows \/ you will not violate your family\u2019s trust in you\u2014you will not violate yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere are a couple of questions: \u201cAre you loyal and do you wear the cloak of integrity? Are you the same in public as you are in private?\u201d Crawford traveled for 20-some years\u201410-14 days per month. He made it his desire that he would go out, knowing that I trusted him in these hotel rooms. When he would be on the road, he would always have someone that he would call to let them know where he was\u2014he had an accountability partner. He always had a picture of the family. There was no way that I would mistrust him. Why? Because he built\u2014he built, within our family relationship, this gift of trust.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen, no matter if you would ever fail guys, we want to know: \u201cWill you do whatever is necessary to build trust again?\u201d We want to know that. I want you to ask her sometime today: \u201cDo you trust me in all things?\u201d If not in all things, then you need to fix it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you the last gift. The last gift is the gift of servant-leadership. 1 Peter, Chapter 5, verses 2-3 says: \u201cShepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.\u201d I found these great lyrics to a song called <em>Lead Me<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me read this to you and see if this speaks to your heart, guys:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look around and see my wonderful life,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlmost perfect from the outside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn picture frames, I see my beautiful wife,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlways smiling; but on the inside\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can hear her saying, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLead me with strong hands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStand up when I can\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t leave me hungry for love,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChasing dreams.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat about us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShow me you\u2019re willing to fight,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat I\u2019m still the love of your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know we call this our home,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I still feel alone.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Father give me the strength to be \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverything I\u2019m called to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, Father, show me the way to lead them \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWon\u2019t You?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo lead them with strong hands,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo stand up when they can\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t want to leave them hungry for love,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChasing things that I could give up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll show them I\u2019m willing to fight\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd give them the best of my life\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we can call this our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLead me, \u2018cause I can\u2019t do this alone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese are seven gifts, guys\u2014that you can present to your wife. It takes time to be committed and the responsibility of seeing it through. Crawford is the pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia. They have spoken at <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> getaways for almost three decades now. The message we\u2019re going to hear today was actually a message they presented at one of our <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> one-day events for couples, back last fall. Everybody was taking notes during this message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a real sampling, I think, of the kinds of issues and sampling of themes that you\u2019ll hear at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, here are Crawford and Karen Loritts. We\u2019re going to hear today Part One from Karen about the gifts a husband can give to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford: <\/strong>Well, Sweetheart, I want to say in front of all of these people that I\u2019m here to listen to you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> We\u2019ve been married now for 43 years. [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s the absolute joy of my life. I actually met her when I was in college, just before the beginning of my sophomore year. Two weeks before I went back on campus, my high school sweetheart broke up with me. I was in my dorm room praying\u2014this is a true story\u2014I went to a Christian college. I was in my dorm room, praying\u2014I was on my knees. I said: \u201cGod, no more women! No more women\u2014they mess you up every time. I\u2019m going to stay focused this semester\u2014just you and me, Jesus. I\u2019m going to be all zeroed in and not distracted.\u201d Anybody that knows me knows that I can be fairly focused once my mind is made up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up off of my knees, after that deep-seated, stalwart, single-minded commitment to Jesus\u2014to be focused and not to date \/ not to be distracted because I needed to heal. I walked down the street to the main administration building. Again, my mind was recycling and going over this deep-seated commitment I\u2019d made to Jesus. I opened the door of the main administration building, and there were these two brown legs at the top of the stairs. [Laughter] I said, \u201cLord, what have we here?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI learned an incredible life-long lesson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Oh, my word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> Never make foolish vows! [Laughter] Those legs belonged to Karen. She was new on campus, and my mama taught me to be hospitable to strangers. So, I said, \u201cI\u2019m your tour guide.\u201d [Laughter] I have been showing her around now for 43 years. She\u2019s the joy of my life! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> My parents had been married for 53 years before my dad passed away and went to be with the Lord. What an incredible marriage God gave them. They lived by vows, and I\u2019m really indebted to them. I\u2019ll never forget the last year that he was alive\u2014he was suffering from congestive heart failure and a number of other issues. They lived in Roanoke, Virginia; and we lived in Atlanta. I was helping them with some of their affairs, and I was up visiting them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had just sold the house\u2014it was a large house. Mom had arthritis and getting around that thing was quite the challenge. They were living in a small apartment. I\u2019ll never forget this. It was about\u2014I would say\u20141:30-2 o\u2019clock in the morning. For some reason, I couldn\u2019t sleep. The bedroom doors were open, and I was in the little bedroom right next to theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of a sudden, I heard my dad say: \u201cOh, Sylvia, I couldn\u2019t make it. I\u2019m so sorry. I couldn\u2019t make it.\u201d You see, what had happened was my father was moving slowly at that point. He had to go to the bathroom, and he had gotten up and he couldn\u2019t make it. He\u2019d had an accident. Listen to what my mother said\u2014I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014she said to him: \u201cCrawford, that ain\u2019t nothing\u2014we\u2019re married. I\u2019ll clean it up.\u201d The tears began to trickle down my cheeks because, right in that moment, my mind just flashed back as\u2014as they lived out their commitment to one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Karen and I will be talking to you and talking about the gifts that we give to one another, I want you to keep this principle in the back of your heart and mind. One of the great problems of our marriages today is that we\u2019re too terribly pragmatic. We\u2019re not <em>noble<\/em> enough. I know that\u2019s a word that\u2019s not used often, but we\u2019ve lost the <em>nobility<\/em> of commitment and the <em>nobility<\/em> of sacrifice. So here\u2019s the principle: \u201cThe richness of your marriage is in direct proportion to the sacrifices that you make for one another.\u201d The richness of your marriage is in direct proportion to the sacrifices that you make for one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Karen\u2019s going to come and talk about the seven gifts that every man needs to give to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> Ladies, I want to talk a few minutes to the men. I need for the men to jot these seven gifts down. Ladies, I want you not peeking over their shoulders\u2014not nudging them. Let them write this list for themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese are the seven gifts, men\u2014that I would like to offer that you give to your wife. The first gift is godliness. One of the things that speaks to the heart of a wife is that her husband is seeking the heart of God. Knowing and growing in a loving personal relationship with Jesus is the best gift\u2014the number one gift, guys\u2014that you can give your wife. She needs to know that you love God more than her and that you will do anything to make that relationship tell the truth about their personal relationship with God. So, the first gift is godliness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the second gift, guys\u2014is unconditional love. In the book of Ephesians, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 5, verse 25, it says: \u201cHusbands, love your wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. Love her as you would your own body.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, 43 years ago, Crawford looked into my eyes and he made a vow\u2014just like your husband did\u2014to love and cherish in sickness and in health, for better\/for worse, for richer\/for poorer til death do you part. Now, guys, he made that commitment 43 years ago. Little did he realize, when he married me, he was marrying a person that had a lot of excess baggage. I came from the ghettos of Philadelphia\u2014lived in projects\u2014the product of an unfaithful mother, as a teenager, who gave birth to me. I came into this marriage, wanting to be a wife; but I was clueless of what it meant to be a wife. This man loved me! I was bitter \/ I was angry. I had no way of knowing what it really meant to be a wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he loved me when our little girl died. Through my own selfishness, I would not let him grieve. He loved me through the pain of this lost child\u2014he kept his vows. I love \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Corinthians, Chapter 13. Guys, let me suggest that you take some time and read through 1 Corinthians, verses 4-8. Ask yourself a question: \u201cIs my love for my wife as described in 1 Corinthians 13?\u2014that unconditional love that my wife needs?\u201d A man who really loves his wife\u2014he will love her <em>unconditionally<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA third gift is the gift of understanding. This is what it says in 1 Peter, Chapter 3, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tverse 7: \u201cLikewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe authors of the book, <em>Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti, <\/em>describes for most women\u2014they describe it this way: \u201cEvery thought and issue is connected to every other thought and issue in some way. Life is much more of a process for women.\u201d So, men, let me just give you, under the guise of understanding your wife, four \u201cT\u2019s\u201d\u2014four \u201cT\u2019s.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first \u201cT\u201d is time. Several years ago, when we dropped off our last child to college, I went through an emotional meltdown. I went through this whole thing about the empty nest, and I was a hot mess. Can I say that? I was a hot mess! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> I cried and I sobbed. I didn\u2019t know what was happening, but what I needed from Crawford\u2014to understand me\u2014what I was going through\u2014was I needed time to build the relationship\u2014to help me through the healing process. In the midst of this empty nest thing I was going through\u2014menopause\u2014menopause\u2014menopause! My insides were like a <em>hot <\/em>furnace. I would just be hot and cold\u2014it was just a terrible time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only thing I needed from Crawford, even though he didn\u2019t understand, I just needed him to <em>pretend<\/em> that he was understanding by giving me time\u2014appropriate time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother \u201cT\u201d is\u2014guys, you have to be tender. Give her tenderness. When your wife goes and has her mammogram\u2014you know that mammogram that wives have? [Laughter] Don\u2019t just say, \u201cOh, you\u2019re just going to the doctor.\u201d It is a <em>painful <\/em>experience as part of this whole process. I had a call-back on my mammogram. I had Crawford go with me because I wanted him to experience what I was going through. We go through an awful lot; don\u2019t we girls? We go through an awful lot! We need, not only time, but we need for you to be <em>tender<\/em> as we\u2019re going through it. Be sympathetic\/empathize with us\u2014encourage us. Don\u2019t tell us to \u201cJust get over it,\u201d\u2014don\u2019t say that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother \u201cT\u201d is being thoughtful\u2014being thoughtful. You know, my love language is\u2014Crawford gives me flowers \/ he gives me notes and all kinds of good things\u2014but do you know what my love language is? \u201cTake out the garbage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust take out the garbage!\u201d [Laughter] So, being thoughtful means you need to do what you need to do\u2014be helpful. I\u2019m working eight hours a day. When I come home, dinner may not be ready. Now, in our house, Crawford has threatened to get rid of the stove; but I put in my thirty-something years of cooking. So, now there\u2019s an empty nest; we can go out a little bit more\u2014be thoughtful on the changes and the seasons in life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe last \u201cT\u201d about understanding is talking. Listen, guys\u2014save some words for when you get home. \u201cPut on your listening ears,\u201d\u2014Judge Judy\u2014\u201cPut on your listening ears and just listen.\u201d We don\u2019t need for you to always want to fix it! When I was going through my emotional meltdown, I didn\u2019t tell Crawford a lot of the things I was going through because he wanted to fix it. I wanted to work it out myself! Is that true? I\u2019m just saying. I\u2019m just saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne little last thing, guys\u2014the process of understanding starts in the morning. If you want to have good fellowship at night, you\u2019d better start early\u2014understanding. [Laughter\/Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth gift is to be a provider. Men, we need for you to provide. One of the things I <em>loved <\/em>\/I just absolutely <em>loved<\/em> about Crawford\u2019s dad is that, for 40-something years, he worked in the A&amp;P Warehouse in New Jersey. He showed his family that, no matter what\u2014whether it\u2019s the night shift or the day shift\u2014that work was what God had called him to do. It wasn\u2019t about building a big bank account or having the greatest place to live; but just being able to have an honest day\u2019s salary for an honest day\u2019s work and to provide for his family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what 1 Timothy, Chapter 5, verse 8 says: \u201cBut if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.\u201d Let me ask you a question, guys: \u201cHave you provided for your wife and family should you die before her?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fifth gift is the gift of protection. Men, let me tell you that there are relationship bullies that are ready to go against your wife and your family. I mean, it can be anything from your children\u2014disrespectful children in your home\u2014that talk to your wife any ol\u2019 kind of way\u2014interfering parents, interfering in-laws, interfering co-workers. Lots of people, even within the church, want to interfere. You need to protect her\u2014she is the queen of the house. Are you protecting her the way God has asked you to do? [Applause] You need to be that bullet-proof vest around her heart and her mind\u2014that she knows you are there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians, Chapter 5, again, says a great reminder: \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself and nourishes her and protects her.\u201d There is no doubt in my mind that Crawford is my protector. Does your wife know that you will protect her, even sometimes from herself when she seems overwhelmed by the stresses of life? You need to step in and be the voice of common sense and wisdom sometimes. I\u2019m just saying, we need for you to be the protector.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe sixth gift is the gift of trust\u2014it\u2019s the gift of trust. I like what it says in \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 84, verses 11 and 12: \u201cFor the Lord God is a sun and shield. The Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. Oh, Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in You.\u201d God promises you that, when you walk uprightly \/ if you trust Him\u2014and, ladies, we know that trust from our guys is a biggie; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, we need to know that you can be trusted. We understand\u2014sometimes, if someone has hurt you, guys, or mistrusted you, or violated a trust that you\u2019ve given\u2014it hurts you\u2014the same way with us. We want to know that you will not violate your vows \/ you will not violate your family\u2019s trust in you\u2014you will not violate yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere are a couple of questions: \u201cAre you loyal and do you wear the cloak of integrity? Are you the same in public as you are in private?\u201d Crawford traveled for 20-some years\u201410-14 days per month. He made it his desire that he would go out, knowing that I trusted him in these hotel rooms. When he would be on the road, he would always have someone that he would call to let them know where he was\u2014he had an accountability partner. He always had a picture of the family. There was no way that I would mistrust him. Why? Because he built\u2014he built, within our family relationship, this gift of trust.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen, no matter if you would ever fail guys, we want to know: \u201cWill you do whatever is necessary to build trust again?\u201d We want to know that. I want you to ask her sometime today: \u201cDo you trust me in all things?\u201d If not in all things, then you need to fix it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you the last gift.
