Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou really like it when you go hear someone speak\u2014and whoever the speaker is\u2014just kind of cuts it straight; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You like it when they just kind of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you do too; don\u2019t you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do. You don\u2019t want somebody who\u2019s abrasive, or who\u2019s hostile, or harsh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just say it like it is\u2014no namby-pamby around\u2014let\u2019s just get to the Scripture. Let it say what it says, and then take me to application.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear one of those kinds of messages this week on our program; aren\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are\u2014Dr. Robert Lewis\u2014who was, for a number of years, the lead pastor at Fellowship Bible Church of Little Rock, Arkansas. That means he was my pastor\u2014more than 24 years. He has been in the pastorate over 28 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of our listeners, especially those who have gone through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series know Robert Lewis. He was the designer of <em>The Quest for Authentic Manhood.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014<\/em>he got that started\u2014and then he helped us out with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series for men, offering guys a solid definition of what real, authentic biblical manhood looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to hear today a portion of a message from Robert, taken from Ephesians 5, where he talks about our responsibility, as men and as husbands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I heard this message, I thought: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get back to the office tomorrow and tell Bob: \u2018We need to play this for our listeners\u2014they need to hear this. This is a great message.\u2019<em>\u201d<\/em> Here\u2019s Dr. Robert Lewis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want to take your Bibles and turn over to Ephesians 5 there. Today, as you\u2019re doing that, I just want you to know the passage that is before us in this practical section of Ephesians is a passage that I think we could call \u201cexclusive\u201d rather than \u201cinclusive.\u201d I say exclusive because it targets specifically one particular group here, in the congregation today\u2014and that is us married men. How many of you guys have a ring on your left hand?\u2014let me just see. Hold it up high\u2014be proud of it. Yes, there you are. This is our passage, guys, here today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me begin by looking at the first couple of verses there, starting in verse 22. It says: \u201cWives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ also is head of the church, He himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if this were 1950, those words would go down pretty smooth\u2014they would not probably even cause a ripple in the congregation because the idea of a husband being the head of his wife was a no-brainer. That\u2019s just the way it was. In fact, if I were preaching in 1950, most of you women would be in the congregation this morning, with hats on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons you would wear those hats is to make a symbolic social statement, as many women do on this Sunday in other parts of the world \/ in churches, making a strong social statement that you agree with this text\u2014that you have a head covering \/ a head called a husband. Unfortunately, for me, today, it\u2019s not 1950. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in our day, even in a church like ours\u2014a Bible-believing church\u2014reading a text like this causes some unrest \/ some unease. I\u2019m aware of that\u2014some discomfort among some of you; right? You feel that because there are two hard spots in this passage. For us, the two hard spots are right up at the top of the passage\u2014and that is these: First of all, it says\u2014you can see them there\u2014\u201cthe husband is the head of the wife.\u201d And then that second statement: \u201cWives, submit to your husbands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn Stott, who today is one of our premier theologians in the world\u2014he made this comment about this text. He said: \u201cIn a world of equality, freedom, and permissiveness, nothing is so out of fashion today than headship and submission.\u201d And yet, here we are this morning\u2014and for whatever reason these words have not been taken out of the Bible\u2014they\u2019re still in there. We can\u2019t avoid them\u2014we can\u2019t go around them, or over them, or under them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to go through this text because I don\u2019t think God intended for this text to be a minefield for us that blows us up. I think He intended it to be a gold mine, and I want to share with you why, especially for us husbands. So let me begin by offering you some what I call \u201cstarting perspectives.\u201d Let me give them to you\u2014here\u2019s the first one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMen need clear directions to do well in <em>anything<\/em>, especially marriage! We need maps when we\u2019re driving through the countryside, and we need maps for our marriages. A number of years ago, I was in the Atlanta airport. I picked up the <em>Atlanta Journal<\/em>. There, on the front page, was an article that said, \u201cSwiss Laws End the Reign of Men as Head of Their Homes.\u201d I read it. What they did in Switzerland is\u2014they passed a law that said men could no longer be considered the head of their home. From this point on, in Switzerland, marriage roles would be left undefined. I thought to myself, \u201cFrom what I\u2019ve learned about men, over the last 30 years, <em>nothing<\/em> could be so unnerving to a man than to enter marriage undefined\u2014<em>undefined<\/em>\u2014not clear about what he\u2019s supposed to do! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s supposed to be in this partnership for life; but doing <em>what<\/em>?\u2014he\u2019s got to make it up? It was the great social anthropologist, Margaret Meade, who said this\u2014listen very carefully\u2014as she looked at cultures throughout human history, she made this concluding statement: \u201cThe chief responsibility of every society is to define appropriate roles for its men.\u201d Men desperately need to know what\u2019s expected of them, especially in their marriages. The worst thing that a culture\u2014a society\u2014a state can do for a man, especially in marriage, is tell them <em>nothing<\/em>\u2014you have to make it up. Without social roadmaps, men become confused\u2014they become lost \/ they become problematic, as we all know. For many of them, they become passive\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they just hang around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands, without marital roadmaps, suffer the same fate, not\u2014from what I\u2019ve discovered\u2014not because of a lack of desire to want to do well. That\u2019s not why they fail. It\u2019s just no one has spelled out the directions for them of <em>how<\/em> to do well, and <em>how <\/em>to define their life, and how to be called up to something with some specifics they can grab onto and pull themselves up to a more noble perch, both in life and in marriage. That\u2019s why I like this text\u2014because Paul spells it out clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second perspective is this\u2014notice what words are linked with \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014you might just peruse over the passage for just a moment. Let me tell you what\u2019s not linked with \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014words like boss, ruler, best one, chief, or master. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know why you won\u2019t find any words like that linked to \u201chead\u201d here or anywhere else in the Scripture? Because the Scripture is very clear that male domination is a personal moral failure in marriage\u2014it\u2019s very clear about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the word that is linked to \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014and the word is linked three times\u2014you see it there in verses 23, 25, and 28\u2014here\u2019s the word that is linked to it: Christ\u2014to be a head, <em>as Christ<\/em>; to love, <em>as Christ<\/em>; to nourish and cherish, <em>as Christ<\/em>. In other words, if you want a good definition of headship, it\u2019s simply this\u2014modeling Christ, as a man, in some specific ways to your wife\u2014that\u2019s headship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird, I want to say a word about submission since that\u2019s a hot word today. I believe submission is the space a wife gives her husband to assume his God-given responsibilities, whether loving her, leading her, or serving her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, it happens in practical ways\u2014when it finally massages itself down into the social fabric of a marriage \/ the everyday of a marriage. Here\u2019s what happens when young men grow up understanding what a head is and women understand what submission is. This is how it plays out in the social landscape of life:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSherard and I are walking up to a door; okay? We walk up to a door. When we get to the door, my wife gives me space to do what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sit down at the dinner table with all our kids. We sit down \/ the dinner is served\u2014it\u2019s there. There\u2019s a moment of silence, and my wife gives me <em>space<\/em> to do what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re sleeping together\u2014it\u2019s 3:00 am. We hear some disturbances in the room next to ours. My wife gives me space to do what? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGet up and get him! Protect me!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are little things. Then the big things\u2014when we\u2019re determining the direction of our family: \u201cWhat standards we\u2019re going to hold that are going to make this family healthy?\u201d My wife also gives me space to step forward. When we\u2019re making a big financial decision or determining what amount of our income we\u2019re going to give to the church, a lot of times, my wife will give me space to see: \u201cAre you going to lead like Christ?\u201d You see\u2014submission is the space a wife gives for her husband to grow up, as a head, and not fill it for him. That\u2019s what submission is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fourth perspective is this\u2014the husband who doesn\u2019t grow up, as a head \/maybe neglects or shuns these responsibilities\u2014here\u2019s what you will do to your wife, guys. This is after 30 years of counseling\u2014you\u2019re going to force her into a fallback position. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I can tell you what the fallback positions are\u2014here\u2019s what they are:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, you\u2019re going to force her to be a doormat, who has to submit to a dictator\u2014which is awful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr you\u2019re going to force her to become a manipulator to get her way\u2014kind of like in the movie <em>My Big Fat Greek Wedding.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember the mom, Maria, and the daughter, Toula? Toula goes in to the daddy and says, \u201cI want to go to college.\u201d He tells her she can\u2019t go to college\u2014that\u2019s not right for her and all that. She comes out crying. Maria, her mom, says to Toula, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d She says, \u201cDaddy says I can\u2019t go to college, and he\u2019s the head of the home.\u201d Maria kind of laughs; and she goes: \u201cNonsense! The husband may be the head of the home, but the wife is the woman who is the neck that turns the head,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a manipulator.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there\u2019s an enabler. That\u2019s the wife who is always covering up and filling in for the irresponsibilities of her husband, like my mom did for 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t like it, and she didn\u2019t like it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr she can become a warrior and fight with her husband for what\u2019s right and keep trying to push him to do what\u2019s right. It takes a terrible toll of wounds on both of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr she can do what a lot of young women are doing today\u2014growing up in our new, more liberated society\u2014she can become the head herself\u2014and take over the marriage and assume the responsibilities that her husband is ignoring. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting\u2014in 1950, most women under an irresponsible head would become a doormat; but today\u2019s woman doesn\u2019t take that. Most women today just simply take over; and if that doesn\u2019t work, she leaves. That\u2019s the world we live in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow we\u2019re going to look at what Paul really wants to say\u2014his focus, remember, is\u2014husbands. He wants to give three of what I call \u201cBest Practices for a Head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the first one: \u201cA real head is a lover,\u201d\u2014very simple. Look at verse 25\u2014he says, \u201cHusbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church.\u201d Now the comparison is to Christ. The question we have to ask is: \u201cHow did Christ love the church?\u201d The answer is: \u201cHe loved the church by connecting with the church where it most needed Him.\u201d It needed redemption, and Jesus stepped into that and redeemed His church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the husband doesn\u2019t redeem the wife; but it, at least, invites this question: \u201cWhere does the wife most need the husband to love her?\u201d I believe it\u2019s a very basic answer\u2014it is this: \u201cShe needs to\u2014in the dailyness of marriage\u2014she needs to <em>feel <\/em>loved.\u201d That\u2019s so basic, but that\u2019s the great connection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe needs to feel, in an ongoing way, a positive, healthy, <em>emotional <\/em>connection of love with her husband. In other words, you\u2019ve got to, as a man, show her your heart. Practically, that\u2019s going to mean regularly opening up when you come home\u2014talking to her, listening to her, caring about what she\u2019s feeling in life, sharing with her where you\u2019re going, what\u2019s happening around you, understanding her, and moments of intimacy where you just kind of connect, soul to soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan I hear an \u201cAmen,\u201d ladies? Is that right? Do you believe that? That\u2019s what you most need. This is what it means to love a woman. Guys, it\u2019s so easy just to forget that or miss that\u2014like the guy who took his wife out to dinner. They went out, and the dinner was served. He immediately went to eating\u2014there was very little talking or any kind of interaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey looked next to them, and there was this couple\u2014this younger couple. They were having the same meal, but they were conversing. He was talking in kind of an animated fashion, and she was looking adoringly at him. Every so often, he would lean over and whisper something in her ear; and she would laugh and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the midst of that, the first woman, at the other table, said to her husband: \u201cLook at how he talks to her. Wow! Why don\u2019t you do something like that?\u201d He looks up from his Caesar salad and says, \u201cHoney, I don\u2019t even know the woman!\u201d [Laughter] Now, that\u2019s a guy that doesn\u2019t get it!\u2014see? He\u2019s missed the whole point of this text. Loving is connecting, at an <em>emotional<\/em> level, where a woman <em>feels<\/em> loved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands, here\u2019s what I want you to know. One of the best ways to emotionally connect with your wife is by learning her love language. I love the fact\u2014I\u2019ve said this in Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t--but Gary Chapman has given men one of the best and easiest ways to emotionally connect with their wives by just simply learning their love language. Let me just give them to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, by the way, if you would\u2014this is the only thing I\u2019m going to ask you to do\u2014write these down because I have something for you at the end of the sermon. Here they are: First, affirming words. Some women love to be loved by affirming words\u2014when you speak them, it just builds them up \/ lifts them up. Others: by physical touch\u2014hugs or whatever. Some by quality time together\u2014they want just <em>you<\/em>, undistracted. Some: by receiving gifts. You\u2019re helping around the house, fixing certain things, stuff like that\u2014the last one is acts of service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are the love languages that women engage with. Here\u2019s the thing that Chapman pointed out\u2014every woman, here in this room, has a primary love language. She can look at that list and pretty much <em>immediately<\/em> choose the one that\u2019s hers. She knows what her primary love language is\u2014but here\u2019s the question: \u201cDo you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you?\u201d Even deeper, let me ask this question: \u201cEven if you knew it, do you know the most meaningful ways \/ practical ways to speak that love language into her life?\u201d See, that\u2019s what a real head does\u2014he takes the time to open up his heart\u2014go in to his wife in a way that connects deeply into her heart\u2014and they feel this deep emotional-love connection. A real head loves his wife \/ shows her his heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve listened to Part One of a message from Dr. Robert Lewis on a husband\u2019s responsibility to love his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know some of our listeners may say, \u201cHaven\u2019t we heard that message?\u201d But you look around, and maybe we\u2019ve heard it, but we need to move beyond hearing it and start doing a little more doing of it\u2014do you know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it. In fact, what man doesn\u2019t need to hear a message like that every few months? You know, Bob, we teach, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, what the Apostle Paul taught in Ephesians 5\u2014that the husband is the head of the wife. What that means is\u2014he has a God-ordained responsibility to serve, love, lead, care for, nourish and cherish his wife. Being the head doesn\u2019t let him off the hook to become a dictator.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Being the head means he has the ultimate responsibility to care for his wife\u2019s soul. What Robert was doing today was\u2014he was just taking men into the practical workings of: \u201cWhat does it mean for a man to truly love his wife?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur wives want our hearts, as Robert said. They want to know we are on their team and we want to care for them like they need to be cared for. I don\u2019t think we can hear that message too often.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting to me\u2014whenever I get a chance to talk to the wives of guys who have gone through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series for men\u2014they\u2019re always smiling. They\u2019re always saying: \u201cI am so encouraged that (a) my husband wanted to go through this material \/ they stuck with it\u2014and I can tell it\u2019s making a difference in how he views his assignment, as a man, in our home, as my husband, as a father to our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRobert is one of the key contributors to the <em>Stepping Up <\/em>video series, along with guys like Matt Chandler and Crawford Loritts. Let it say what it says, and then take me to application.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear one of those kinds of messages this week on our program; aren\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are\u2014Dr. Robert Lewis\u2014who was, for a number of years, the lead pastor at Fellowship Bible Church of Little Rock, Arkansas. That means he was my pastor\u2014more than 24 years. He has been in the pastorate over 28 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of our listeners, especially those who have gone through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series know Robert Lewis. He was the designer of <em>The Quest for Authentic Manhood.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014<\/em>he got that started\u2014and then he helped us out with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series for men, offering guys a solid definition of what real, authentic biblical manhood looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to hear today a portion of a message from Robert, taken from Ephesians 5, where he talks about our responsibility, as men and as husbands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I heard this message, I thought: \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get back to the office tomorrow and tell Bob: \u2018We need to play this for our listeners\u2014they need to hear this. This is a great message.\u2019<em>\u201d<\/em> Here\u2019s Dr. Robert Lewis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want to take your Bibles and turn over to Ephesians 5 there. Today, as you\u2019re doing that, I just want you to know the passage that is before us in this practical section of Ephesians is a passage that I think we could call \u201cexclusive\u201d rather than \u201cinclusive.\u201d I say exclusive because it targets specifically one particular group here, in the congregation today\u2014and that is us married men. How many of you guys have a ring on your left hand?\u2014let me just see. Hold it up high\u2014be proud of it. Yes, there you are. This is our passage, guys, here today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me begin by looking at the first couple of verses there, starting in verse 22. It says: \u201cWives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ also is head of the church, He himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if this were 1950, those words would go down pretty smooth\u2014they would not probably even cause a ripple in the congregation because the idea of a husband being the head of his wife was a no-brainer. That\u2019s just the way it was. In fact, if I were preaching in 1950, most of you women would be in the congregation this morning, with hats on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons you would wear those hats is to make a symbolic social statement, as many women do on this Sunday in other parts of the world \/ in churches, making a strong social statement that you agree with this text\u2014that you have a head covering \/ a head called a husband. Unfortunately, for me, today, it\u2019s not 1950. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in our day, even in a church like ours\u2014a Bible-believing church\u2014reading a text like this causes some unrest \/ some unease. I\u2019m aware of that\u2014some discomfort among some of you; right? You feel that because there are two hard spots in this passage. For us, the two hard spots are right up at the top of the passage\u2014and that is these: First of all, it says\u2014you can see them there\u2014\u201cthe husband is the head of the wife.\u201d And then that second statement: \u201cWives, submit to your husbands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn Stott, who today is one of our premier theologians in the world\u2014he made this comment about this text. He said: \u201cIn a world of equality, freedom, and permissiveness, nothing is so out of fashion today than headship and submission.\u201d And yet, here we are this morning\u2014and for whatever reason these words have not been taken out of the Bible\u2014they\u2019re still in there. We can\u2019t avoid them\u2014we can\u2019t go around them, or over them, or under them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to go through this text because I don\u2019t think God intended for this text to be a minefield for us that blows us up. I think He intended it to be a gold mine, and I want to share with you why, especially for us husbands. So let me begin by offering you some what I call \u201cstarting perspectives.\u201d Let me give them to you\u2014here\u2019s the first one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMen need clear directions to do well in <em>anything<\/em>, especially marriage! We need maps when we\u2019re driving through the countryside, and we need maps for our marriages. A number of years ago, I was in the Atlanta airport. I picked up the <em>Atlanta Journal<\/em>. There, on the front page, was an article that said, \u201cSwiss Laws End the Reign of Men as Head of Their Homes.\u201d I read it. What they did in Switzerland is\u2014they passed a law that said men could no longer be considered the head of their home. From this point on, in Switzerland, marriage roles would be left undefined. I thought to myself, \u201cFrom what I\u2019ve learned about men, over the last 30 years, <em>nothing<\/em> could be so unnerving to a man than to enter marriage undefined\u2014<em>undefined<\/em>\u2014not clear about what he\u2019s supposed to do! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s supposed to be in this partnership for life; but doing <em>what<\/em>?\u2014he\u2019s got to make it up? It was the great social anthropologist, Margaret Meade, who said this\u2014listen very carefully\u2014as she looked at cultures throughout human history, she made this concluding statement: \u201cThe chief responsibility of every society is to define appropriate roles for its men.\u201d Men desperately need to know what\u2019s expected of them, especially in their marriages. The worst thing that a culture\u2014a society\u2014a state can do for a man, especially in marriage, is tell them <em>nothing<\/em>\u2014you have to make it up. Without social roadmaps, men become confused\u2014they become lost \/ they become problematic, as we all know. For many of them, they become passive\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they just hang around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands, without marital roadmaps, suffer the same fate, not\u2014from what I\u2019ve discovered\u2014not because of a lack of desire to want to do well. That\u2019s not why they fail. It\u2019s just no one has spelled out the directions for them of <em>how<\/em> to do well, and <em>how <\/em>to define their life, and how to be called up to something with some specifics they can grab onto and pull themselves up to a more noble perch, both in life and in marriage. That\u2019s why I like this text\u2014because Paul spells it out clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second perspective is this\u2014notice what words are linked with \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014you might just peruse over the passage for just a moment. Let me tell you what\u2019s not linked with \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014words like boss, ruler, best one, chief, or master. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know why you won\u2019t find any words like that linked to \u201chead\u201d here or anywhere else in the Scripture? Because the Scripture is very clear that male domination is a personal moral failure in marriage\u2014it\u2019s very clear about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the word that is linked to \u201chead\u201d in this passage\u2014and the word is linked three times\u2014you see it there in verses 23, 25, and 28\u2014here\u2019s the word that is linked to it: Christ\u2014to be a head, <em>as Christ<\/em>; to love, <em>as Christ<\/em>; to nourish and cherish, <em>as Christ<\/em>. In other words, if you want a good definition of headship, it\u2019s simply this\u2014modeling Christ, as a man, in some specific ways to your wife\u2014that\u2019s headship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird, I want to say a word about submission since that\u2019s a hot word today. I believe submission is the space a wife gives her husband to assume his God-given responsibilities, whether loving her, leading her, or serving her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, it happens in practical ways\u2014when it finally massages itself down into the social fabric of a marriage \/ the everyday of a marriage. Here\u2019s what happens when young men grow up understanding what a head is and women understand what submission is. This is how it plays out in the social landscape of life:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSherard and I are walking up to a door; okay? We walk up to a door. When we get to the door, my wife gives me space to do what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sit down at the dinner table with all our kids. We sit down \/ the dinner is served\u2014it\u2019s there. There\u2019s a moment of silence, and my wife gives me <em>space<\/em> to do what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re sleeping together\u2014it\u2019s 3:00 am. We hear some disturbances in the room next to ours. My wife gives me space to do what? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGet up and get him! Protect me!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are little things. Then the big things\u2014when we\u2019re determining the direction of our family: \u201cWhat standards we\u2019re going to hold that are going to make this family healthy?\u201d My wife also gives me space to step forward. When we\u2019re making a big financial decision or determining what amount of our income we\u2019re going to give to the church, a lot of times, my wife will give me space to see: \u201cAre you going to lead like Christ?\u201d You see\u2014submission is the space a wife gives for her husband to grow up, as a head, and not fill it for him. That\u2019s what submission is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fourth perspective is this\u2014the husband who doesn\u2019t grow up, as a head \/maybe neglects or shuns these responsibilities\u2014here\u2019s what you will do to your wife, guys. This is after 30 years of counseling\u2014you\u2019re going to force her into a fallback position. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I can tell you what the fallback positions are\u2014here\u2019s what they are:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, you\u2019re going to force her to be a doormat, who has to submit to a dictator\u2014which is awful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr you\u2019re going to force her to become a manipulator to get her way\u2014kind of like in the movie <em>My Big Fat Greek Wedding.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember the mom, Maria, and the daughter, Toula? Toula goes in to the daddy and says, \u201cI want to go to college.\u201d He tells her she can\u2019t go to college\u2014that\u2019s not right for her and all that. She comes out crying. Maria, her mom, says to Toula, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d She says, \u201cDaddy says I can\u2019t go to college, and he\u2019s the head of the home.\u201d Maria kind of laughs; and she goes: \u201cNonsense! The husband may be the head of the home, but the wife is the woman who is the neck that turns the head,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a manipulator.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there\u2019s an enabler. That\u2019s the wife who is always covering up and filling in for the irresponsibilities of her husband, like my mom did for 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t like it, and she didn\u2019t like it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr she can become a warrior and fight with her husband for what\u2019s right and keep trying to push him to do what\u2019s right. It takes a terrible toll of wounds on both of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr she can do what a lot of young women are doing today\u2014growing up in our new, more liberated society\u2014she can become the head herself\u2014and take over the marriage and assume the responsibilities that her husband is ignoring. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting\u2014in 1950, most women under an irresponsible head would become a doormat; but today\u2019s woman doesn\u2019t take that. Most women today just simply take over; and if that doesn\u2019t work, she leaves. That\u2019s the world we live in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow we\u2019re going to look at what Paul really wants to say\u2014his focus, remember, is\u2014husbands. He wants to give three of what I call \u201cBest Practices for a Head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the first one: \u201cA real head is a lover,\u201d\u2014very simple. Look at verse 25\u2014he says, \u201cHusbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church.\u201d Now the comparison is to Christ. The question we have to ask is: \u201cHow did Christ love the church?\u201d The answer is: \u201cHe loved the church by connecting with the church where it most needed Him.\u201d It needed redemption, and Jesus stepped into that and redeemed His church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the husband doesn\u2019t redeem the wife; but it, at least, invites this question: \u201cWhere does the wife most need the husband to love her?\u201d I believe it\u2019s a very basic answer\u2014it is this: \u201cShe needs to\u2014in the dailyness of marriage\u2014she needs to <em>feel <\/em>loved.\u201d That\u2019s so basic, but that\u2019s the great connection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe needs to feel, in an ongoing way, a positive, healthy, <em>emotional <\/em>connection of love with her husband. In other words, you\u2019ve got to, as a man, show her your heart. Practically, that\u2019s going to mean regularly opening up when you come home\u2014talking to her, listening to her, caring about what she\u2019s feeling in life, sharing with her where you\u2019re going, what\u2019s happening around you, understanding her, and moments of intimacy where you just kind of connect, soul to soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan I hear an \u201cAmen,\u201d ladies? Is that right? Do you believe that? That\u2019s what you most need. This is what it means to love a woman. Guys, it\u2019s so easy just to forget that or miss that\u2014like the guy who took his wife out to dinner. They went out, and the dinner was served. He immediately went to eating\u2014there was very little talking or any kind of interaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey looked next to them, and there was this couple\u2014this younger couple. They were having the same meal, but they were conversing. He was talking in kind of an animated fashion, and she was looking adoringly at him. Every so often, he would lean over and whisper something in her ear; and she would laugh and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the midst of that, the first woman, at the other table, said to her husband: \u201cLook at how he talks to her. Wow! Why don\u2019t you do something like that?\u201d He looks up from his Caesar salad and says, \u201cHoney, I don\u2019t even know the woman!\u201d [Laughter] Now, that\u2019s a guy that doesn\u2019t get it!\u2014see? He\u2019s missed the whole point of this text. Loving is connecting, at an <em>emotional<\/em> level, where a woman <em>feels<\/em> loved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands, here\u2019s what I want you to know. One of the best ways to emotionally connect with your wife is by learning her love language. I love the fact\u2014I\u2019ve said this in Men\u2019s Fraternity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t--but Gary Chapman has given men one of the best and easiest ways to emotionally connect with their wives by just simply learning their love language. Let me just give them to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, by the way, if you would\u2014this is the only thing I\u2019m going to ask you to do\u2014write these down because I have something for you at the end of the sermon. Here they are: First, affirming words. Some women love to be loved by affirming words\u2014when you speak them, it just builds them up \/ lifts them up. Others: by physical touch\u2014hugs or whatever. Some by quality time together\u2014they want just <em>you<\/em>, undistracted. Some: by receiving gifts. You\u2019re helping around the house, fixing certain things, stuff like that\u2014the last one is acts of service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are the love languages that women engage with. Here\u2019s the thing that Chapman pointed out\u2014every woman, here in this room, has a primary love language. She can look at that list and pretty much <em>immediately<\/em> choose the one that\u2019s hers. She knows what her primary love language is\u2014but here\u2019s the question: \u201cDo you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you?\u201d Even deeper, let me ask this question: \u201cEven if you knew it, do you know the most meaningful ways \/ practical ways to speak that love language into her life?\u201d See, that\u2019s what a real head does\u2014he takes the time to open up his heart\u2014go in to his wife in a way that connects deeply into her heart\u2014and they feel this deep emotional-love connection. A real head loves his wife \/ shows her his heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve listened to Part One of a message from Dr. Robert Lewis on a husband\u2019s responsibility to love his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know some of our listeners may say, \u201cHaven\u2019t we heard that message?\u201d But you look around, and maybe we\u2019ve heard it, but we need to move beyond hearing it and start doing a little more doing of it\u2014do you know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it. In fact, what man doesn\u2019t need to hear a message like that every few months? You know, Bob, we teach, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, what the Apostle Paul taught in Ephesians 5\u2014that the husband is the head of the wife. What that means is\u2014he has a God-ordained responsibility to serve, love, lead, care for, nourish and cherish his wife. Being the head doesn\u2019t let him off the hook to become a dictator.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Being the head means he has the ultimate responsibility to care for his wife\u2019s soul. What Robert was doing today was\u2014he was just taking men into the practical workings of: \u201cWhat does it mean for a man to truly love his wife?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur wives want our hearts, as Robert said. They want to know we are on their team and we want to care for them like they need to be cared for. I don\u2019t think we can hear that message too often.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting to me\u2014whenever I get a chance to talk to the wives of guys who have gone through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series for men\u2014they\u2019re always smiling.
