Here is Sheri Hairston.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I gave birth to four children. I have stretch marks, and I struggle to see myself the way that God sees me and the way my husband sees me; but he frees me up by that kind of love\u2014to see the beauty that\u2019s in me and to know that I can remind my daughters that they have the same kind of beauty. Perfection is not the goal, but God has formed us and shaped us wonderfully. I think this is the first time we\u2019ve had a guest who\u2014as far as I know\u2014first time a guest who has taken his daughter and handed her over to the police\u2014took her to jail. Can you think of anybody who has done that other than the guy sitting across from you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should probably get the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have you ever done it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Take my daughter to jail?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>I took her to court\u2014I took her to traffic court because I wanted the judge to scare her a little bit, and I sat there with her\u2014but not to jail. He is\u2014Rod is a pastor in Owings Mills, Maryland. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Some people are going,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There are some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cWhat was Bob humming there?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014there are some old-timers that get that one; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 Okay, so, my daughter was 12. This is at the time when everyone is instant messaging\u2014and you know\u2014loose restrictions, if any at all. We said to her: \u201cListen, you cannot IM strangers because there are perverts\u2014there are predators. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019ll try to get in contact with you and try to get your information. Don\u2019t do it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is you, being a dad, who is covering his daughter\u2014protecting her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I\u2019m trying to do my job\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014trying to fulfill my assignment. We tell her\u2014she doesn\u2019t follow suit. We tell her again\u2014she doesn\u2019t follow suit. I caught her on her phone\u2014I go into her bedroom, and I just happened to say, \u201cLet me see your phone.\u201d\u00a0 I just do random phone checks. I said, \u201cLet me see your phone.\u201d\u00a0 She goes\u2014she gets those big eyes like: \u201cReally?\u00a0 You want to see my phone?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGive me the phone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, anyway, I look at her phone. I\u2019m like, \u201cWho is this guy?!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d\u00a0 I take the phone, and I just\u2014I lose it. I smashed the phone on the floor. Her eyes got even bigger. I said: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 You obviously don\u2019t want to live under my roof with my rules.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is to a 12 year old?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>This is to my 12 year old. Yes, because I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou don\u2019t like the food I provide? The heat is not warm enough, maybe?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know, \u201cBut you don\u2019t like it here because my rules don\u2019t work for you.\u201d\u00a0 So, I say, \u201cI\u2019ll tell you what, let\u2019s go have a family meeting.\u201d\u00a0 We went into the family room. We called all the family together. I said, \u201cYou need to tell your family what just happened.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You mean about Dad smashing the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No, about what Dad found on her phone. Now, it\u2019s family accountability. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, you remember this happening, Sheri; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I remember this happening; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you didn\u2019t know what was going on when Dad brought her into the room; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I did not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what were you thinking?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>\u201cWhat is all this commotion?\u00a0 What is going on?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, what happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>So, I said, \u201cLeah has something to share with you,\u201d\u2014and Leah knows\u2014we talk about this all the time. It\u2019s funny now, but she shared what happened. I said, \u201cAnd she\u2019s going to juvie\u201d\u2014that\u2019s juvenile detention. So, everybody started crying. There was great weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth in our family room. And I said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Hold it\u2014hold it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You announced to the whole family that you were taking her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>To juvie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Juvenile detention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Juvenile detention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Jail for kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes, jail for kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>But we have to say\u2014you did call a friend down there and say: \u201cListen, I need to teach my daughter a lesson. I\u2019m bringing her down.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like: \u201cBring her down. I\u2019m waiting for her. Come on. Bring her down to teach her a lesson.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>This was all fixed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a big <em>Lesson<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong><em>Lesson<\/em>. So, she had no idea of this, of course. All of the family is in tears and all of this. So, I call my buddies down. I know a lot of police officers in town. I called them and said, \u201cHey, can you call down to juvie?\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cAbsolutely, we\u2019ve got you. We\u2019ll take care of that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI drive her all the way downtown. It\u2019s a 30-minute ride downtown. There were tears. I said: \u201cOh, by the way, call your grandmother, too, and tell her where you are headed. You know you want to use the cell phone.\u201d\u00a0 She called her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow, you\u2019re milking this thing; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Oh, yes, the whole way\u2014the whole way. This is going to be a big lesson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you know, before we get to kind of the punch line of where this went\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what did you see on the phone that caused the bells and whistles to go off in your mind?\u2014you go, \u201cI\u2019ve got to teach a <em>Lesson<\/em> because my daughter\u2019s life may be on the line.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I saw a predator, talking to her with sexual language\u2014my 12 year old\u2014after we had said several times, \u201cDon\u2019t IM anyone.\u201d\u00a0 And when I saw that sexual language from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That she was entertaining. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That she was entertaining\u2014I said, \u201cThis has got to stop.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you wanted to make an impression that would never be forgotten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. She needed to put together the outcome of her actions\u2014that: \u201cThis can never lead to anything productive. She said she was sorry the whole way. I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d\u00a0 And he explained that it was all fixed. He told me who was down there, waiting for her, how long they were going to be there\u2014that he would be in the same building\u2014that she\u2019d be put in a cell by herself for a few minutes to really feel the effects of it. But I knew that she would learn a lesson\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>\u2014because this is the first child \/ the firstborn. She\u2019s the one who that verse applies to\u2014and we knew that, as parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I just want to say\u2014some of our listeners may remember a broadcast we did with the father and the FBI agents for Kacie Woody, who was 13 years old, Bob\u2014wasn\u2019t that about right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014just north of here in Arkansas about 35 miles\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014who was abducted by a guy from San Diego\u2014a 45-year-old man. And she was assaulted and murdered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this is a life-and-death issue that you were dealing with on your daughter\u2019s phone. That\u2019s why you reacted the way you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right\u2014it was life and death to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, keep on telling the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to run this on out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>So, we get to the juvenile detention center. I said, \u201cYou come with me.\u201d\u00a0 I went to the lady at the front desk. I said: \u201cI have a child here who doesn\u2019t want to live in my home. She does not want to obey the rules that me and my wife have laid out; and we do our best to love her \/ take care of her.\u201d\u00a0 The lady said: \u201cOh, no problem. We have the place for her. I\u2019ll get one of the officers, and he\u2019ll escort her to where she needs to go.\u201d She calls the officer\u2014she said: \u201cSir, you just need to drive around the back of the building. Officer So-and-so will be waiting for you. He\u2019ll take her in and book her and take her to her cell.\u201d\u00a0 So, she\u2019s now thinking: \u201cOh my goodness!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is really happening.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI drove her around the building. The officer met us; and he said, \u201cOh, is this the one that we heard about?\u00a0 Is this the daughter that\u2014oh,\u201d and he began to lecture her, \u201cSo, young lady, don\u2019t you know that your parents love you and they try to provide for you?\u201d\u00a0 He just read her the riot act. She said [Tearfully], \u201cYes, sir, I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe took her right into a cell, where it\u2019s cold and it\u2019s hard. I just leave around the corner. I just sit for about 30 or 40 minutes, while she is sitting in a cell, back there, thinking about her life. So, the officer said, \u201cI think it\u2019s been about long enough.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI agree.\u201d She came out. I said, \u201cSo, what did you decide while you\u2014did you want to stay in my house or would you like to stay here?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDaddy, I want to go home!\u00a0 I want to go home!\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cWell, let\u2019s have a conversation before we make this decision. Now, if you come back to my house, you need to live under the guidelines your mom and I have set\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014no IM\u2019ing \/ no rebellion.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDaddy, I\u2026\u201d\u2014she has been a model child ever since. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, there are some listeners wondering if you got that number at the juvie. Yes, I\u2019m just going back to the Kacie Woody story. So, when I don\u2019t understand them, I have to simply say: \u201cI don\u2019t understand, but how can I love you?\u00a0 What do you need from me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I appreciate your candor there, as a man. I really do. I mean, you\u2019re admitting what every man thinks\u2014it is like: \u201cNow, wait a second, just flip a switch and get over this!\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s not the way they\u2019re wired. I\u2019m an introvert\u2014my husband is an extrovert. He feeds off of people. He\u2019s refueled and energized by people. I\u2019m drained by that expenditure. So, we always have these discussions about: \u201cWhat\u2019s manageable for me? Does it seem to be manageable for him?\u201d He didn\u2019t understand my need for a little more structure and calm\u2014so, we had a discussion about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A little fellowship on that subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes, intense fellowship on that subject. My wife is drop-dead gorgeous. I tell guys when I go speak out at conferences: \u201cMy wife is bad! I mean, she\u2019s just bad!\u00a0 She is fine!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And she is. She is a beautiful woman. I love her deeply. I love this woman. [Emotion in voice] I can\u2019t even\u2014I can\u2019t even get it out of my mouth sometimes how much she means to me. And there are times when I drop the ball, and I miss it in terms of her emotional needs; but I want to get it right because I love her, and I need her in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sheri, when you hear your husband describe you as \u201cbad\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I think a lot of women look at themselves in the mirror and all they see are flaws. I have stretch marks, and it\u2019s\u2014I struggle with my self-esteem that way. I struggle to see myself the way God sees me and the way my husband sees me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sheri: <\/strong>But he frees me up by that kind of love\u2014to see the beauty that\u2019s in me and to know that I can remind my daughters that they have the same kind of beauty. Perfection is not the goal, but God has formed us and shaped us wonderfully. His love reminds me of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And when he chokes up talking about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That just fills me up. It makes deposits in places I can\u2019t even tell you. Well, if you do that or if you do that, everything will be okay.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m a little slow sometimes. It took me a while to figure out that doesn\u2019t work very well. So, what I have learned is to just let her talk about it: \u201cSo, tell me what you are thinking; okay?\u00a0 You\u2019re thinking this. I have stretch marks, and I struggle to see myself the way that God sees me and the way my husband sees me; but he frees me up by that kind of love\u2014to see the beauty that\u2019s in me and to know that I can remind my daughters that they have the same kind of beauty. Perfection is not the goal, but God has formed us and shaped us wonderfully. I\u2019m like, \u201cWho is this guy?!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d\u00a0 I take the phone, and I just\u2014I lose it. I smashed the phone on the floor. Her eyes got even bigger. I said: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 You obviously don\u2019t want to live under my roof with my rules.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is to a 12 year old?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>This is to my 12 year old. Yes, because I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou don\u2019t like the food I provide? There was great weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth in our family room. So, she had no idea of this, of course. All of the family is in tears and all of this. So, I call my buddies down. I know a lot of police officers in town. I called them and said, \u201cHey, can you call down to juvie?\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cAbsolutely, we\u2019ve got you. We\u2019ll take care of that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI drive her all the way downtown. It\u2019s a 30-minute ride downtown. There were tears. I said: \u201cOh, by the way, call your grandmother, too, and tell her where you are headed. You know you want to use the cell phone.\u201d\u00a0 She called her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow, you\u2019re milking this thing; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Oh, yes, the whole way\u2014the whole way. This is going to be a big lesson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you know, before we get to kind of the punch line of where this went\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what did you see on the phone that caused the bells and whistles to go off in your mind?\u2014you go, \u201cI\u2019ve got to teach a <em>Lesson<\/em> because my daughter\u2019s life may be on the line.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I saw a predator, talking to her with sexual language\u2014my 12 year old\u2014after we had said several times, \u201cDon\u2019t IM anyone.\u201d\u00a0 And when I saw that sexual language from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That she was entertaining. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That she was entertaining\u2014I said, \u201cThis has got to stop.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you wanted to make an impression that would never be forgotten. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. She needed to put together the outcome of her actions\u2014that: \u201cThis can never lead to anything productive. She said she was sorry the whole way. I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d\u00a0 And he explained that it was all fixed. He told me who was down there, waiting for her, how long they were going to be there\u2014that he would be in the same building\u2014that she\u2019d be put in a cell by herself for a few minutes to really feel the effects of it. But I knew that she would learn a lesson\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>\u2014because this is the first child \/ the firstborn. She\u2019s the one who that verse applies to\u2014and we knew that, as parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I just want to say\u2014some of our listeners may remember a broadcast we did with the father and the FBI agents for Kacie Woody, who was 13 years old, Bob\u2014wasn\u2019t that about right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014just north of here in Arkansas about 35 miles\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014who was abducted by a guy from San Diego\u2014a 45-year-old man. And she was assaulted and murdered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this is a life-and-death issue that you were dealing with on your daughter\u2019s phone. That\u2019s why you reacted the way you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right\u2014it was life and death to me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, keep on telling the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to run this on out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>So, we get to the juvenile detention center. I said, \u201cYou come with me.\u201d\u00a0 I went to the lady at the front desk. I said: \u201cI have a child here who doesn\u2019t want to live in my home. She does not want to obey the rules that me and my wife have laid out; and we do our best to love her \/ take care of her.\u201d\u00a0 The lady said: \u201cOh, no problem. We have the place for her. I\u2019ll get one of the officers, and he\u2019ll escort her to where she needs to go.\u201d She calls the officer\u2014she said: \u201cSir, you just need to drive around the back of the building. Officer So-and-so will be waiting for you. He\u2019ll take her in and book her and take her to her cell.\u201d\u00a0 So, she\u2019s now thinking: \u201cOh my goodness!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is really happening.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI drove her around the building. The officer met us; and he said, \u201cOh, is this the one that we heard about?\u00a0 Is this the daughter that\u2014oh,\u201d and he began to lecture her, \u201cSo, young lady, don\u2019t you know that your parents love you and they try to provide for you?\u201d\u00a0 He just read her the riot act. She said [Tearfully], \u201cYes, sir, I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe took her right into a cell, where it\u2019s cold and it\u2019s hard. I just leave around the corner. I just sit for about 30 or 40 minutes, while she is sitting in a cell, back there, thinking about her life. So, the officer said, \u201cI think it\u2019s been about long enough.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI agree.\u201d She came out. I said, \u201cSo, what did you decide while you\u2014did you want to stay in my house or would you like to stay here?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDaddy, I want to go home!\u00a0 I want to go home!\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cWell, let\u2019s have a conversation before we make this decision. The same guy who did this with his daughter is a guy who is talking about the need to cover the women in his life and care for their emotional needs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay, so, they need to understand that that\u2019s the framework you\u2019re operating from\u2014which is, \u201cI\u2019m going to care for the emotional needs of my wife and my daughters.\u201d\u00a0 This is not how you treat your girls, day in and day out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No; no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was a silver bullet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That was a silver\u2014you know the Bible says, \u201cFolly is bound up in the heart of a child, and the rod of correction\u201d\u2014the rod of discipline\u2014\u201cwill drive it far from them.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you are that Rod; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rod, there\u2019s\u2014oh, Bob, that was pretty good. Rod did not even know what he\u2019d said. What are the kinds of things you do\u2014what are the kinds of things a man ought to be doing to invest in and demonstrate \u201cI\u2019m here to make sure that your emotional life is as whole as it can be\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>You know, one of the most important things, I think, I have learned on this journey is that her being emotional and having emotional needs does not mean she\u2019s crazy. Her emotions are valid\u2014they are real. It\u2019s what she\u2019s feeling, and I\u2019ve had to learn to treat her emotions as if they are valid. So, when I don\u2019t understand them, I have to simply say: \u201cI don\u2019t understand, but how can I love you?\u00a0 What do you need from me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I appreciate your candor there, as a man. I really do. I mean, you\u2019re admitting what every man thinks\u2014it is like: \u201cNow, wait a second, just flip a switch and get over this!\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s not the way they\u2019re wired. That\u2019s not\u2014we didn\u2019t want a replica of ourselves when we married our wives; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sheri, you just had a conversation like this with Rod about your emotional needs\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014that he did not understand; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Absolutely, on the way here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can you tell us what\u2014so tell us the circumstances. What was it about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>It was about an emotional need that I have for calm\u2014for the pace of life not to be overwhelming. I\u2019m an introvert\u2014my husband is an extrovert. He feeds off of people. He\u2019s refueled and energized by people. I\u2019m drained by that expenditure. So, we always have these discussions about: \u201cWhat\u2019s manageable for me? Does it seem to be manageable for him?\u201d He didn\u2019t understand my need for a little more structure and calm\u2014so, we had a discussion about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A little fellowship on that subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes, intense fellowship on that subject. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know what?\u00a0 Dennis and Barbara Rainey have had some intense fellowship on that exact subject; haven\u2019t you? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I would say that you used almost the exact same words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that Barbara would use\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cPeople drain me,\u201d\u2014you like them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I like them\u2014I\u2019m not antisocial. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I like people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You do, but it doesn\u2019t mean that is what gives you energy and strength\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s solitude, and it\u2019s a pace of life that\u2019s a little slower. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Help the men, who are listening right now, Sheri, better understand: \u201cWhat are the emotional needs of a woman?\u201d Now, you described what you needed in that situation from Rod, but what are the top emotional needs of a wife?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know about all wives; but I know, for me, I need to be loved, to be accepted, to be heard. I need to have my voice not squelched. I need to know that what I feel matters. I need space to feel it\u2014even if it doesn\u2019t make sense. If I feel it, it is real. I need not be told, \u201cIt is all hormones.\u201d\u00a0 I need to be who I am and express myself and feel valued. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You not only esteem her for her value, as your wife and as the mother of your children, but you also talk about her beauty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Do you see what I am looking at here?\u00a0 I get to look at this every day. My wife is drop-dead gorgeous. I tell guys when I go speak out at conferences: \u201cMy wife is bad! I mean, she\u2019s just bad!\u00a0 She is fine!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And she is. She is a beautiful woman. I love her deeply. I love this woman. [Emotion in voice] I can\u2019t even\u2014I can\u2019t even get it out of my mouth sometimes how much she means to me. And there are times when I drop the ball, and I miss it in terms of her emotional needs; but I want to get it right because I love her, and I need her in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sheri, when you hear your husband describe you as \u201cbad\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I think a lot of women look at themselves in the mirror and all they see are flaws. So, do you think he\u2019s just up to something?\u00a0 Do you think he\u2019s\u2014I mean, what does it do for you when you hear him talk about the fact that he sees you as a beautiful woman?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>It challenges my mindset because, like most women, I gave birth to four children. I have stretch marks, and it\u2019s\u2014I struggle with my self-esteem that way. I struggle to see myself the way God sees me and the way my husband sees me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sheri: <\/strong>But he frees me up by that kind of love\u2014to see the beauty that\u2019s in me and to know that I can remind my daughters that they have the same kind of beauty. Perfection is not the goal, but God has formed us and shaped us wonderfully. His love reminds me of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And when he chokes up talking about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That just fills me up. It makes deposits in places I can\u2019t even tell you. It fills me up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You also, Rod\u2014you, not only affirm her emotions for what they are, and who she is, and talk to her about her beauty\u2014your commitment \/ your love for her\u2014but, when she\u2019s uncertain \/ when she doesn\u2019t know which way to go,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014you\u2019ll step in and provide gentle coaching\/leadership and guide her a bit. Explain how you do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. Early on, I used to just say: \u201cWell, you just need to do this. Well, if you do that or if you do that, everything will be okay.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m a little slow sometimes. It took me a while to figure out that doesn\u2019t work very well. So, what I have learned is to just let her talk about it: \u201cSo, tell me what you are thinking; okay?\u00a0 You\u2019re thinking this. Okay.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019ll just kind of listen; and then, I\u2019ll say, \u201cSo, what kind of steps do you think would be helpful to take?\u201d\u00a0 So, I find that, if I let her talk about how she\u2019s thinking \/ process it with me, then, I can more helpfully guide her to the solution. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>As opposed to fixing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what they call that in the NFL\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>What\u2019s that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014when you just try to fix it and you don\u2019t really listen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>What?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s called a rookie season. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I had a long rookie season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, some of us repeat our rookie year\u2014or make some rookie errors\u2014even though we are veterans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In 1 Peter, Chapter 3, verse 7, it really wraps up what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014we\u2019re talking about here: \u201cLikewise, husbands live with your wives in an understanding way\u201d\u2014that is what you\u2019ve been talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cshowing honor to the woman as a weaker vessel since they are heirs with you of the grace of life so that your prayers may not be hindered.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That is our assignment, as men.
