I want you to have our guest tell about the time that his apartment got broken into, back when he was a kid. It\u2019s a great story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, let\u2019s get right to it. We have with us today Sheri and Rod Hairston on the broadcast. Sheri\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Hello. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014Rod, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s great to be back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rod has written a book called <em>Cover Her<\/em>. He is a pastor. He is the former chaplain of the Baltimore\u2014I keep wanting to say Colts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Colts; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I keep wanting to say the Colts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, do a lot of people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Don\u2019t say that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it\u2019s the Ravens. I\u2019ve got to tell our listeners this story\u2014in fact, some of them were there. I spoke in Washington, DC, after they won one of their two recent Super Bowl rings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>After the Ravens won. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Ravens, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not after Washington. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Not the Redskins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember the last time Washington won. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s just the Cowboy side of me coming out, at that point. Anyway, but I had a Raven ball cap because I got a chance to go to Monday Night Football in your stadium, probably back when you were a chaplain. I had a guy who put me with some of the best seats in the place and bought me a hat, and I thought it would kind of be fun to wear it there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In Washington, DC\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at the Washington, DC\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to put on a Baltimore Ravens?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I did\u2014like: \u201cThere has got to be a lot of Raven fans here,\u201d because Washington was out of the playoffs\u2014they hadn\u2019t done that well that year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Baltimore\u2019s just real close up the road; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, so, you\u2019d think that neighbors\u2014they\u2019d kind of be\u2014I nearly got booed off the stage at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. You\u2019d think you\u2019d be among friends there. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s go to the story, Rod, about your apartment being broken into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How old were you when this happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I\u2019ll never forget\u2014I was probably about ten years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>My mother was going out with some friends one evening; and you know, I was raised by my mom\u2014we lived in the projects. She\u2019d gone out to have some fun with some friends. When she came to get us, we returned to the house, only to discover that the TV was missing and her jewelry was missing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014the drawers had been ransacked. So, we were startled. We were trying to figure out what the heck had gone on. I remember, at ten years old, feeling extraordinarily vulnerable, but feeling like my mom probably feels more vulnerable. I saw my mom cry. I saw the fear come over her, just for a moment, because she realized, in a moment, \u201cBut I still have to protect my boys.\u201d\u00a0 Something went through my mind: \u201cI don\u2019t want anybody to ever harm my mom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I made a black club\u2014it was a piece of metal pipe. At ten years old, I wrapped black tape around it\u2014very carefully \/ very meticulously to cover every portion of the metal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI put a little piece of white string in two holes at the end of it, like a billy club. I told my mom\u2014I said: \u201cYou take this club, and you keep it by your bed. If anybody ever comes in here while I\u2019m gone, you take it and crack them upside the head.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you the oldest of the boys in your family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No, actually, I was the youngest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you are the youngest; but something inside of you was saying, \u201cI need to step up and be a protector to my mom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. I just\u2014it was something that I <em>sensed<\/em> as important. I knew the pain of growing up without a man in the house, and I always felt this kind of undercurrent of vulnerability. So, the only way\u2014and my grandfather actually kind of modeled for me, before he passed when I was eight\u2014this strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you caught a picture of it from him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I caught a picture of it from him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You grew up in the hood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Grew up in the hood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What about you, Sheri?\u00a0 Where did you grow up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I grew up in Trinidad with my grandparents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what kind of family did you come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I came from a broken family as well. My parents got divorced when I was five years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy grandparents really stepped in and took my sister and me and raised us as their children. I thank God every day for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rod, if we just looked at statistics\u2014for you, growing up where you grew up, with a single-parent mom, trying to hold the family together\u2014the odds that you\u2019re going to be married today, with a job, taking care of a wife\u2014you beat the odds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Significantly. And I think about that often. I think about it with tears in my eyes, and my mother gave us extraordinary vision. Even though we grew up in the hood, she would always make home very nice. She would make sure that we had what we needed, and she would take us out for dinner and train us how to have etiquette when we went out to eat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>So, she cast vision tremendously for us. I began to see myself in other places. And she told me: \u201cYou are going to go to college. Either you go to Army, or Air Force, Navy, Marines or college.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cGive me college.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is that where you guys\u2014where you and Sheri met?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>We met at a Campus Crusade for Christ\u2014Cru\u2014Josh McDowell\u2019s \u201cWhy Wait\u201d conference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good place to meet. [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019ll set you up right\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to be with Josh next month\u2014I\u2019ll tell him he\u2019s a great matchmaker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>He is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what about the first time you met Rod?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>The first time I met Rod, he was such a gentleman. I had never had anyone ask me\u2014for the first time ever\u2014\u201cSo, how long have you been a Christian?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSince I was nine years old.\u201d\u00a0 And that began the conversation\u2014our conversation was about Christ and about His work in our lives. It never stopped. He\u2019s being a gentleman was incredible, and I just felt honored and cherished in his presence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, how did he ask you out for a date?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>[Laughter] That first day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I remember\u2014we were at the conference. Josh would speak and, then, he\u2019d take a little break. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came up to me during one of the breaks and had the conversation with me. Then, he said: \u201cWell, what are you doing for dinner?\u00a0 I\u2019d love to take you out for dinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, he didn\u2019t waste any time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That very day!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He asked you when you became a Christian and then asked you out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes, he sure did. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I knew I was seeing something different\u2014I did!\u00a0 [Laughter] I really did. So, you\u2019ve got to catch this part of my journey because\u2014up to this point, before I met her\u2014I recently made a commitment to live pure before God, which had not been a part of my story and my upbringing. I told the Lord, \u201cMake me the man You need me to be for the woman You have for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I prayed that prayer\u2014I\u2019ll never forget it. Then, I saw her. I just said, \u201cOkay, God, I\u2019ve messed up enough. I don\u2019t want to mess up anymore. I just want to go to dinner.\u201d\u00a0 And the conversation we had\u2014I just thought, \u201cOh, my goodness\u2014really, this is alright.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bone of my bones \/ flesh of my flesh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Flesh of my flesh\u2014wow!\u00a0 Wow\u2014something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, back to your book, <em>Cover Her<\/em>. You believe that the mandate for this is given in the greatest marriage preparation manual of all time\u2014the Bible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And in the book of all books\u2014Judges?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Explain to our listeners what the passage is and what you are talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. So, really this covering principle is born out of God\u2019s theology of hospitality. We see it throughout the Old Testament\u2014particularly in Deuteronomy 24. He says to Israel, \u201cRemember when you were slaves.\u201d He says, \u201cDon\u2019t ever treat anybody the way you were treated,\u201d\u2014in essence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get to the book of Judges. We see in Judges, Chapter 19, there is this young woman, who is in the story as a concubine, and her husband is a Levite. She leaves him. Then, eventually, he pursues her at her father\u2019s home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer father lets him in. Now, you know, if she\u2019s a concubine\u2014means she has no marital rights \/ she\u2019s not really his wife\u2014she is his sleeping partner. The father lets this man in. I was just mesmerized, watching this picture in the Scriptures unfold. You are a father, and you would entertain, for some five days or so, a man who didn\u2019t have enough respect for your daughter to make her his wife. So, the husband doesn\u2019t cover her\u2014this Levite, or rather, this man of God, I would say. The father doesn\u2019t cover her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe recovers the woman. They leave\u2014head back to his hometown. They run into this old man, who offers him hospitality\u2014they go into his home. He seems like a great guy; but then, these characters come to the door of this older man. They say, \u201cWe want to sleep with your guests.\u201d\u00a0 He says: \u201cWell, don\u2019t do that. Don\u2019t dishonor this man. I\u2019ll send you my virgin daughter.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the Levite says, \u201cNo, let me send my wife out,\u201d\u2014he sends her out. The horror of the story is that they abuse and rape this young woman all night long. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s\u2014I told people, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to read it for yourself because, otherwise, you wouldn\u2019t believe it\u2019s in the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 No one covered her\u2014not the Levites, not the father, not the old man, not the men in the culture\u2014these, what I call, filthy men. None of them covered this woman. She dies there, on the doorstep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We read a story like that in Judges, Chapter 19, and our jaw drops. We go, \u201cThis is horrible.\u201d\u00a0 But then, the next morning, we get up, read our newspaper\u2014there are stories like that all through the\u2014I mean, we can be shocked when it\u2019s in the Bible\u2014but it\u2019s in our neighborhoods; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s everywhere. It is everywhere\u2014it\u2019s in India \/ it\u2019s in Nigeria. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s in Little Rock \/ it\u2019s in Baltimore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese stories are everywhere\u2014women who are being neglected and abused\u2014sometimes as wives, sometimes in the church, sometimes by men who just commit these vile acts against them\u2014it\u2019s everywhere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk for a moment about how you protect Sheri and your three daughters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things that I did in an attempt to protect my daughters was I interviewed their dates\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014okay?\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember reading Judges\u2014 and thinking and really learning from that\u2014that a man ought to protect, but there was something within my chest that told me, as a father, I could not afford to be passive in this culture\u2014that I was sending my daughters and my wife into a culture that was truly dangerous, both spiritually, morally, physically. I needed to be the man to protect them. How did you do that with your daughters?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Very similarly. My principle was\u2014listen\u2014I\u2019ve invested way too much \/ we have invested way too much in our children \/ our daughters to just hand them over to some careless young man. So, it\u2019s very clear to our girls\u2014we set this standard: \u201cWhenever you begin to date, he needs to come to me.\u201d\u00a0 I said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>They are my responsibility, and they are my investment, and they are my assignment\u2014is to cover them because I\u2019ve been down the road longer than them. I know what guys are like \/ I know what guys want. I know what a responsible, caring young man looks like; and I know what a creep looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, did you ever meet with one of these young men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know what a creep looks like, too, I want you to know. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I used to be one!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you ever meet with one of these young men and then come back to your daughter and say, \u201cNo, no; you\u2019re not going out with him\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. One of my daughters became interested in this young man. They were developing a long-distance relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wanted to come and visit our home. I said, \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d\u00a0 So, I had begun talking to him by phone. In fact, I said, \u201cI\u2019ll buy the plane ticket.\u201d\u00a0 I want him to come to my home so I can have a conversation with him. After about a day, I told my daughter: \u201cHe\u2019s not the one. He\u2019s not the one.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou are far more mature than he is. He is really just all over the place. He\u2019s got so many things that don\u2019t make sense here that it\u2019s not going to work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of those things that I found was\u2014on one occasion, he was going to be driving to our home\u2014his car broke down. He got mad because my daughter wouldn\u2019t drive five hours to come and pick him up. I said: \u201cMy daughter is never going to drive five hours to come and pick you up. So, that\u2019s never going to work. Don\u2019t even ask.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you said, \u201cNo, this is not the one for you,\u201d\u2014now, that\u2019s a risky thing for a dad to say because your daughter could have said: \u201cI\u2019ll decide for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll run away. I\u2019ll do what I want to do.\u201d\u00a0 That was a risky choice. Did that produce tears for her when you said, \u201cNo\u201d; or did she say, \u201cThank you, Dad\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It produced disappointment for her, but we have developed a relationship over the years to the point that she knows what covering is all about. She knows, if she will allow me to lead her, that God will honor that in her life. She came back and she said: \u201cI\u2019m disappointed, but I see what you mean. Thank you for covering me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sheri, you\u2019ve, undoubtedly, had some conversations with your daughters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014some side conversations about this. What are they thinking about this as all this is taking place?\u00a0 Are they feeling truly valued, and loved, and feeling safe or are they really just flat-out rejecting it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>They are not rejecting it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think they definitely want to be covered and experience the blessings of being covered. They are provided for \/ they are cared for and they appreciate that. I think there are times when it seems over-the-top\u2014especially, my youngest daughter. She would say: \u201cThis is a conversation I don\u2019t want to have with Daddy. I want to talk to you about \u2018Why is he asking me about boys?\u2019\u00a0 This is not appropriate!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes, it\u2019s appropriate because you <em>were<\/em> a boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Exactly; exactly. So, she just has to get over that. She\u2019s kind of\u2014she\u2019s more introverted. It\u2019s kind of a stretching subject for her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But you are gentle with her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes, I am; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are recognizing she\u2019s a little shy about the whole deal, but you are still pressing into it. And the reason I\u2019m making that point is\u2014what you are doing is really demanding a chest from you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a courageous heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve refused to allow your fear, her words, her pushback\u2014which is understandable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to define who you are and your responsibility, as a man; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. Listen, Dennis, one day my daughters are going to be launched from my home, as is my son. I don\u2019t want to launch them with regret if I can help it. So, to not have offered them covering, guidance, and council would be\u2014it would be a disservice to them, as a dad. So, I just say: \u201cYou\u2019ll love me one day. You may not like me today\u2014I\u2019m cool with that. I\u2019m really cool with that.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re really not running a popularity contest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I am not. I tell them, \u201cI don\u2019t run my house on democratic votes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Or public opinion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Or public opinion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rod, what you are talking about, in terms of how a man should care for the women in his life\u2014a wife, daughters, even other women in his sphere of influence\u2014I\u2019m trying to put that message with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and forgive me here\u2014the impression I have of the NFL culture. You are working with NFL players, as a chaplain, for ten-plus years\u2014fourteen years at the Ravens\u2014the hip-hop culture that\u2019s a part of all of this. You are suggesting something that is so countercultural. I mean, men today are raised to think a woman\u2019s primary purpose in life is to satisfy whatever urge I might have at the moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. The conversation is difficult in our culture\u2014whether it\u2019s the NFL or whether it\u2019s in this culture of men who refuse to grow up and to simply walk in responsibility and commitment. What we\u2019ve found is that, when you can help men begin to grab a hold of relationship with God, something inside of them changes. They begin to see their relationship with women\u2014with their daughters, even women around them\u2014very differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Rod, I just want to thank you for your courage\u2014not only in providing a covering for your wife \/ your daughters\u2014but also providing an example to a lot of guys, who don\u2019t have a man like you in their life, who is hammering this out in a culture that doesn\u2019t want daddies involved\u2014they\u2019d much rather do their own thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd as you\u2019ve been talking here, I think about a verse that I\u2019ve shared ,many times, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. It says: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong.\u201d\u00a0 But it\u2019s not just being strong; the verse concludes by saying, \u201cLet all that you do be done in love.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you are never heavy-handed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014as you interview these young men; but you are firm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You say, \u201cNo daughter of mine is going to drive five hours\u2026\u201d\u2014you know what?\u00a0 I am absolutely with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s not who you want to be your daughter\u2019s prince, you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s not going to treat her like a queen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking, as you read through that verse\u2014I\u2019m thinking that\u2019s really the antithesis of what the men did in Judges 19. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were not watchful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014not on the alert. They were not standing firm on anything. They were not acting like men. They were not showing strength, and they were not responding in love to what was going on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were just doing what felt good to them at the moment; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. And the thing men need to know is: \u201cWe can do this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And men just\u2014well, shall I say it?\u2014step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I knew that\u2019s where we were headed with this. It\u2019s a great story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, let\u2019s get right to it. We have with us today Sheri and Rod Hairston on the broadcast. Sheri\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Hello. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014Rod, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s great to be back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rod has written a book called <em>Cover Her<\/em>. He is a pastor. He is the former chaplain of the Baltimore\u2014I keep wanting to say Colts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Colts; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I keep wanting to say the Colts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, do a lot of people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Don\u2019t say that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it\u2019s the Ravens. I\u2019ve got to tell our listeners this story\u2014in fact, some of them were there. I spoke in Washington, DC, after they won one of their two recent Super Bowl rings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>After the Ravens won. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Ravens, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not after Washington. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Not the Redskins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember the last time Washington won. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s just the Cowboy side of me coming out, at that point. Anyway, but I had a Raven ball cap because I got a chance to go to Monday Night Football in your stadium, probably back when you were a chaplain. I had a guy who put me with some of the best seats in the place and bought me a hat, and I thought it would kind of be fun to wear it there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In Washington, DC\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at the Washington, DC\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to put on a Baltimore Ravens?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I did\u2014like: \u201cThere has got to be a lot of Raven fans here,\u201d because Washington was out of the playoffs\u2014they hadn\u2019t done that well that year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Baltimore\u2019s just real close up the road; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, so, you\u2019d think that neighbors\u2014they\u2019d kind of be\u2014I nearly got booed off the stage at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. You\u2019d think you\u2019d be among friends there. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s go to the story, Rod, about your apartment being broken into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How old were you when this happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I\u2019ll never forget\u2014I was probably about ten years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>My mother was going out with some friends one evening; and you know, I was raised by my mom\u2014we lived in the projects. She\u2019d gone out to have some fun with some friends. When she came to get us, we returned to the house, only to discover that the TV was missing and her jewelry was missing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014the drawers had been ransacked. So, we were startled. We were trying to figure out what the heck had gone on. I remember, at ten years old, feeling extraordinarily vulnerable, but feeling like my mom probably feels more vulnerable. I saw my mom cry. I saw the fear come over her, just for a moment, because she realized, in a moment, \u201cBut I still have to protect my boys.\u201d\u00a0 Something went through my mind: \u201cI don\u2019t want anybody to ever harm my mom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I made a black club\u2014it was a piece of metal pipe. At ten years old, I wrapped black tape around it\u2014very carefully \/ very meticulously to cover every portion of the metal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI put a little piece of white string in two holes at the end of it, like a billy club. I told my mom\u2014I said: \u201cYou take this club, and you keep it by your bed. If anybody ever comes in here while I\u2019m gone, you take it and crack them upside the head.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Were you the oldest of the boys in your family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No, actually, I was the youngest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you are the youngest; but something inside of you was saying, \u201cI need to step up and be a protector to my mom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. I just\u2014it was something that I <em>sensed<\/em> as important. I knew the pain of growing up without a man in the house, and I always felt this kind of undercurrent of vulnerability. So, the only way\u2014and my grandfather actually kind of modeled for me, before he passed when I was eight\u2014this strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you caught a picture of it from him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I caught a picture of it from him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You grew up in the hood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Grew up in the hood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What about you, Sheri?\u00a0 Where did you grow up?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I grew up in Trinidad with my grandparents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what kind of family did you come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I came from a broken family as well. My parents got divorced when I was five years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy grandparents really stepped in and took my sister and me and raised us as their children. I thank God every day for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rod, if we just looked at statistics\u2014for you, growing up where you grew up, with a single-parent mom, trying to hold the family together\u2014the odds that you\u2019re going to be married today, with a job, taking care of a wife\u2014you beat the odds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Significantly. And I think about that often. I think about it with tears in my eyes, and my mother gave us extraordinary vision. Even though we grew up in the hood, she would always make home very nice. She would make sure that we had what we needed, and she would take us out for dinner and train us how to have etiquette when we went out to eat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>So, she cast vision tremendously for us. I began to see myself in other places. And she told me: \u201cYou are going to go to college. Either you go to Army, or Air Force, Navy, Marines or college.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cGive me college.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Is that where you guys\u2014where you and Sheri met?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>We met at a Campus Crusade for Christ\u2014Cru\u2014Josh McDowell\u2019s \u201cWhy Wait\u201d conference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good place to meet. [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019ll set you up right\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to be with Josh next month\u2014I\u2019ll tell him he\u2019s a great matchmaker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>He is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what about the first time you met Rod?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>The first time I met Rod, he was such a gentleman. I had never had anyone ask me\u2014for the first time ever\u2014\u201cSo, how long have you been a Christian?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSince I was nine years old.\u201d\u00a0 And that began the conversation\u2014our conversation was about Christ and about His work in our lives. It never stopped. He\u2019s being a gentleman was incredible, and I just felt honored and cherished in his presence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, how did he ask you out for a date?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>[Laughter] That first day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>I remember\u2014we were at the conference. Josh would speak and, then, he\u2019d take a little break. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came up to me during one of the breaks and had the conversation with me. Then, he said: \u201cWell, what are you doing for dinner?\u00a0 I\u2019d love to take you out for dinner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, he didn\u2019t waste any time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>That very day!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He asked you when you became a Christian and then asked you out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes, he sure did. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I knew I was seeing something different\u2014I did!\u00a0 [Laughter] I really did. So, you\u2019ve got to catch this part of my journey because\u2014up to this point, before I met her\u2014I recently made a commitment to live pure before God, which had not been a part of my story and my upbringing. I told the Lord, \u201cMake me the man You need me to be for the woman You have for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I prayed that prayer\u2014I\u2019ll never forget it. Then, I saw her. I just said, \u201cOkay, God, I\u2019ve messed up enough. I don\u2019t want to mess up anymore. I just want to go to dinner.\u201d\u00a0 And the conversation we had\u2014I just thought, \u201cOh, my goodness\u2014really, this is alright.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bone of my bones \/ flesh of my flesh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Flesh of my flesh\u2014wow!\u00a0 Wow\u2014something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, back to your book, <em>Cover Her<\/em>. You believe that the mandate for this is given in the greatest marriage preparation manual of all time\u2014the Bible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And in the book of all books\u2014Judges?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Explain to our listeners what the passage is and what you are talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. So, really this covering principle is born out of God\u2019s theology of hospitality. We see it throughout the Old Testament\u2014particularly in Deuteronomy 24. He says to Israel, \u201cRemember when you were slaves.\u201d He says, \u201cDon\u2019t ever treat anybody the way you were treated,\u201d\u2014in essence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get to the book of Judges. We see in Judges, Chapter 19, there is this young woman, who is in the story as a concubine, and her husband is a Levite. She leaves him. Then, eventually, he pursues her at her father\u2019s home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer father lets him in. Now, you know, if she\u2019s a concubine\u2014means she has no marital rights \/ she\u2019s not really his wife\u2014she is his sleeping partner. The father lets this man in. I was just mesmerized, watching this picture in the Scriptures unfold. You are a father, and you would entertain, for some five days or so, a man who didn\u2019t have enough respect for your daughter to make her his wife. So, the husband doesn\u2019t cover her\u2014this Levite, or rather, this man of God, I would say. The father doesn\u2019t cover her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe recovers the woman. They leave\u2014head back to his hometown. They run into this old man, who offers him hospitality\u2014they go into his home. He seems like a great guy; but then, these characters come to the door of this older man. They say, \u201cWe want to sleep with your guests.\u201d\u00a0 He says: \u201cWell, don\u2019t do that. Don\u2019t dishonor this man. I\u2019ll send you my virgin daughter.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the Levite says, \u201cNo, let me send my wife out,\u201d\u2014he sends her out. The horror of the story is that they abuse and rape this young woman all night long. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s\u2014I told people, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to read it for yourself because, otherwise, you wouldn\u2019t believe it\u2019s in the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 No one covered her\u2014not the Levites, not the father, not the old man, not the men in the culture\u2014these, what I call, filthy men. None of them covered this woman. She dies there, on the doorstep. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We read a story like that in Judges, Chapter 19, and our jaw drops. We go, \u201cThis is horrible.\u201d\u00a0 But then, the next morning, we get up, read our newspaper\u2014there are stories like that all through the\u2014I mean, we can be shocked when it\u2019s in the Bible\u2014but it\u2019s in our neighborhoods; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s everywhere. It is everywhere\u2014it\u2019s in India \/ it\u2019s in Nigeria. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It\u2019s in Little Rock \/ it\u2019s in Baltimore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese stories are everywhere\u2014women who are being neglected and abused\u2014sometimes as wives, sometimes in the church, sometimes by men who just commit these vile acts against them\u2014it\u2019s everywhere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk for a moment about how you protect Sheri and your three daughters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things that I did in an attempt to protect my daughters was I interviewed their dates\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014okay?\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember reading Judges\u2014 and thinking and really learning from that\u2014that a man ought to protect, but there was something within my chest that told me, as a father, I could not afford to be passive in this culture\u2014that I was sending my daughters and my wife into a culture that was truly dangerous, both spiritually, morally, physically. I needed to be the man to protect them. How did you do that with your daughters?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Very similarly. My principle was\u2014listen\u2014I\u2019ve invested way too much \/ we have invested way too much in our children \/ our daughters to just hand them over to some careless young man. So, it\u2019s very clear to our girls\u2014we set this standard: \u201cWhenever you begin to date, he needs to come to me.\u201d\u00a0 I said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>They are my responsibility, and they are my investment, and they are my assignment\u2014is to cover them because I\u2019ve been down the road longer than them. I know what guys are like \/ I know what guys want. I know what a responsible, caring young man looks like; and I know what a creep looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, did you ever meet with one of these young men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know what a creep looks like, too, I want you to know. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I used to be one!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you ever meet with one of these young men and then come back to your daughter and say, \u201cNo, no; you\u2019re not going out with him\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. One of my daughters became interested in this young man. They were developing a long-distance relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wanted to come and visit our home. I said, \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d\u00a0 So, I had begun talking to him by phone. In fact, I said, \u201cI\u2019ll buy the plane ticket.\u201d\u00a0 I want him to come to my home so I can have a conversation with him. After about a day, I told my daughter: \u201cHe\u2019s not the one. He\u2019s not the one.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou are far more mature than he is. He is really just all over the place. He\u2019s got so many things that don\u2019t make sense here that it\u2019s not going to work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of those things that I found was\u2014on one occasion, he was going to be driving to our home\u2014his car broke down. He got mad because my daughter wouldn\u2019t drive five hours to come and pick him up. I said: \u201cMy daughter is never going to drive five hours to come and pick you up. So, that\u2019s never going to work. Don\u2019t even ask.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you said, \u201cNo, this is not the one for you,\u201d\u2014now, that\u2019s a risky thing for a dad to say because your daughter could have said: \u201cI\u2019ll decide for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll run away. I\u2019ll do what I want to do.\u201d\u00a0 That was a risky choice. Did that produce tears for her when you said, \u201cNo\u201d; or did she say, \u201cThank you, Dad\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>It produced disappointment for her, but we have developed a relationship over the years to the point that she knows what covering is all about. She knows, if she will allow me to lead her, that God will honor that in her life. She came back and she said: \u201cI\u2019m disappointed, but I see what you mean. Thank you for covering me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sheri, you\u2019ve, undoubtedly, had some conversations with your daughters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014some side conversations about this. What are they thinking about this as all this is taking place?\u00a0 Are they feeling truly valued, and loved, and feeling safe or are they really just flat-out rejecting it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>They are not rejecting it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think they definitely want to be covered and experience the blessings of being covered. They are provided for \/ they are cared for and they appreciate that. I think there are times when it seems over-the-top\u2014especially, my youngest daughter. She would say: \u201cThis is a conversation I don\u2019t want to have with Daddy. I want to talk to you about \u2018Why is he asking me about boys?\u2019\u00a0 This is not appropriate!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes, it\u2019s appropriate because you <em>were<\/em> a boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Exactly; exactly. So, she just has to get over that. She\u2019s kind of\u2014she\u2019s more introverted. It\u2019s kind of a stretching subject for her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But you are gentle with her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes, I am; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are recognizing she\u2019s a little shy about the whole deal, but you are still pressing into it. And the reason I\u2019m making that point is\u2014what you are doing is really demanding a chest from you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014a courageous heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve refused to allow your fear, her words, her pushback\u2014which is understandable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to define who you are and your responsibility, as a man; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. Listen, Dennis, one day my daughters are going to be launched from my home, as is my son. I don\u2019t want to launch them with regret if I can help it. So, to not have offered them covering, guidance, and council would be\u2014it would be a disservice to them, as a dad. So, I just say: \u201cYou\u2019ll love me one day. You may not like me today\u2014I\u2019m cool with that. I\u2019m really cool with that.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re really not running a popularity contest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>I am not. I tell them, \u201cI don\u2019t run my house on democratic votes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>Or public opinion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Or public opinion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rod, what you are talking about, in terms of how a man should care for the women in his life\u2014a wife, daughters, even other women in his sphere of influence\u2014I\u2019m trying to put that message with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and forgive me here\u2014the impression I have of the NFL culture. You are working with NFL players, as a chaplain, for ten-plus years\u2014fourteen years at the Ravens\u2014the hip-hop culture that\u2019s a part of all of this. You are suggesting something that is so countercultural. I mean, men today are raised to think a woman\u2019s primary purpose in life is to satisfy whatever urge I might have at the moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. The conversation is difficult in our culture\u2014whether it\u2019s the NFL or whether it\u2019s in this culture of men who refuse to grow up and to simply walk in responsibility and commitment. What we\u2019ve found is that, when you can help men begin to grab a hold of relationship with God, something inside of them changes. They begin to see their relationship with women\u2014with their daughters, even women around them\u2014very differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Rod, I just want to thank you for your courage\u2014not only in providing a covering for your wife \/ your daughters\u2014but also providing an example to a lot of guys, who don\u2019t have a man like you in their life, who is hammering this out in a culture that doesn\u2019t want daddies involved\u2014they\u2019d much rather do their own thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd as you\u2019ve been talking here, I think about a verse that I\u2019ve shared ,many times, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. It says: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong.\u201d\u00a0 But it\u2019s not just being strong; the verse concludes by saying, \u201cLet all that you do be done in love.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you are never heavy-handed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014as you interview these young men; but you are firm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You say, \u201cNo daughter of mine is going to drive five hours\u2026\u201d\u2014you know what?\u00a0 I am absolutely with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s not who you want to be your daughter\u2019s prince, you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s not going to treat her like a queen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking, as you read through that verse\u2014I\u2019m thinking that\u2019s really the antithesis of what the men did in Judges 19. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were not watchful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014not on the alert. They were not standing firm on anything. They were not acting like men. They were not showing strength, and they were not responding in love to what was going on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rod: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were just doing what felt good to them at the moment; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>Absolutely. And the thing men need to know is: \u201cWe can do this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And men just\u2014well, shall I say it?\u2014step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I knew that\u2019s where we were headed with this.
