Well, a husband has the assignment to provide defensive coverage for his wife and for his family. Rod Hairston says, when that coverage breaks down, the family finds itself under attack.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> When it comes to spiritually covering, sometimes it\u2019s just a simple prayer\u2014 sometimes it\u2019s not even praying with your wife\u2014it\u2019s just whispering a prayer for her. If a guy will do that, it will make a tremendous difference. Sometimes I just have to say, \u201cI prayed for you today.\u201d When it comes to emotionally covering, it\u2019s simply being able to say: \u201cAre you okay? Do you need anything from me?\u201d That\u2019s the scary space for a man. We\u2019ll talk to Rod Hairston today, along with his wife Sheri, about a husband\u2019s assignment in marriage. I think we will, but\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> People are going to be shocked that this is not rehearsed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not rehearsed \/ we did not talk about this ahead of time. We never talk about things\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s what I was getting ready to say! [Laughter] Let\u2019s just clear that up\u2014this is not a scripted broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is <em>real <\/em>family life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so a woman\u2019s number one need from a man\u2014what does she need?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, she needs to be loved, and she needs to be secure. I\u2019d put those words together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because if she doesn\u2019t feel safe, she hasn\u2019t been loved and she\u2019s not secure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was going to say safety too. So, we were on the same page to start with. The number one thing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s ask our guests!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we should.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Rod and Sheri Hairston join us on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Sheri, Rod\u2014welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> What a joy to be here!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sheri, what about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: I would say, for me, the answer is security.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What does that look like to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: It looks like protection, provision, prayer covering. It looks like love\u2014acceptance of who I am.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like you\u2019ve been reading the book your husband wrote. [Laughter] It does; doesn\u2019t it?\u2014because that\u2019s exactly what he talks about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The book is <em>Cover Her<\/em>. How would you answer the question; Rod?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I would say, definitely, security. I would say \u201cvalued.\u201d As you put the two words \u201clove\u201d and \u201csecurity\u201d together, I would put \u201csecurity\u201d and \u201cvalued\u201d together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay\u2014that\u2019s great. Well, Rod and Sheri have been married since 1991. They have four children, ages 17-22. Rod doesn\u2019t have these rings on his fingers\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014and I\u2019m ticked off because\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wanted to see them! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wanted\u2014no, I didn\u2019t want to see them \/ I wanted to wear them! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to put both rings on my fingers and then post or send it out on my Twitter account.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do a hand selfie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes! [Laughter] Absolutely, because he\u2019s been a part of two Super Bowl\u2014count them\u2014NFL championships with the Baltimore Ravens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he has been the chaplain for the Ravens for 14 years. He is, today, the pastor at Messiah Community Church in Owens Mills, Maryland.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just recently retired from that chaplain role with the Ravens; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes, just a year ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, so the next time they get a Super Bowl ring, you don\u2019t get it; do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Unfortunately; [Laughter] but I can say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>We want them to win.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014that we definitely want them to win. It was such a blessing to be part of two Super Bowls. I\u2019m the only pastor I know with two Super Bowl rings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hey! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I want to go back to your book because a number of guys have read my book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. What I\u2019d like to say is\u2014this book, right here, fills in a lot of blanks that I left in <em>Stepping Up <\/em>about how a man can step up, as a husband, and truly protect, and care for, and spiritually guide and cover his wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s just pull back to the beginning and what the big idea for the book is, Rod.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> The big idea for <em>Cover Her <\/em>is\u2014and it\u2019s in the subtitle\u2014<em>How Men Can Create a Safe Place for the Ladies in Their Lives<\/em>\u2014physically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Our job\u2014our calling\/our assignment from God\u2014and we get this from Genesis by virtue of the principle of first mention\u2014that: \u201cAdam was assigned and called to protect the space God had put him in. Because He put Eve in that space, he was thereby to protect her as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You actually start the book, not by talking about a man\u2019s role in relation to the women in his life, but you start by talking about a man understanding what manhood\u2019s all about in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you worked with the Baltimore Ravens. I mean, guys in the NFL are kind of the epitome of masculinity in a culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I\u2019m guessing that some of those guys were confused about what real manhood is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely! They were; I was; so many of the men that I encounter in my ministry are confused about what it means to be a man. In the book, I talk about how society has really kind of confused and feminized what it means to be a man. So we have to have a conversation, early in the book and early in our relationships with men, about: \u201cWhat does it really mean to be a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if you\u2019re sitting down with a guy, and we\u2019ll just say he\u2019s a rookie; okay? He\u2019s come on the football team; he\u2019s a rookie; he\u2019s kind of got some swagger about him and all of that. He\u2019s got this idea that manhood looks like being tough or bragging. If you\u2019re going to correct him on that, where do you start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I start with his number one issue\u2014and this is the number one issue for all of us, as men. My number one responsibility, as a man\u2014the number one thing that identifies me, as a man\u2014is my response to God and my responsibility under that call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, it\u2019s a man\u2019s relationship with God that defines his manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A lot of guys get their identity from their career path, their address, what they\u2019re driving, what they\u2019re wearing,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the amount of money in their checking account. You\u2019re saying it\u2019s a spiritual address that gives a guy a sense of significance in knowing who he is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. The clarity comes when I begin to commune with God \/ relate to God. I begin to find out who I really am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> You see, because what I learned first is all of the extrinsic things. When I come to God, He begins to work on the inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> He begins to tell me who I am against the backdrop of my brokenness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s where you develop, in the book, this idea of man-strength.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That a guy has got to develop man-strength. Unpack what you mean by that phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, before you do that, though, Bob, I\u2019ve got to just turn to Sheri, at this point. Go all the way back to 1991.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes\u2014May 26<sup>th<\/sup>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go!\u2014when you married Rod. How well did he know his address\u2014his identity as a man, back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Well, I have to say that, in the past 23 years, he\u2019s grown a lot in that area. But there was always been something about Rod. The thing that attracted me most to him was his heart for God\u2014that has never changed\u2014his desire to know God, and to love God, and to let others know God and love God has been very attractive to me. That hasn\u2019t changed. So some of it, he already had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So he had the DNA.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> He had the DNA; it\u2019s grown and developed over the years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he\u2019s learned some of the skills, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where I want to develop, for men, some hope that they don\u2019t have to be exactly like Rod Hairston 23 years later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, you\u2019ve been in the incubator here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. This has been a journey\u2014it\u2019s been a process. I grew up without my dad. I was <em>constantly<\/em> trying to find my identity\u2014searching for significance. In that short span of years, I looked for it in <em>all <\/em>of the wrong things; but, when I began to connect with God, intimately, something changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of guys, Rod, who probably were near to turning this radio program off because they are going: \u201cHere we go again! Here\u2019s a guy who\u2019s got it all together. He did it from Day One. He\u2019s had all of the gears in place since the beginning.\u201d But you just said you didn\u2019t have a dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t have most of the gears in place\u2014I promise you. In fact, when my wife got me, she kind of got me just out of the bakery shop, if you will. [Laughter] I was just done\u2014I mean, just half-baked. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was really <em>raw <\/em>in the process of my manhood. One of the big things for me was that I struggled with my identity. I spent a lot of time discouraged about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She told me that it was one of those take home and bake pizzas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014she controlled the temperature! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! Yes, she did; yes, she did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So let\u2019s go back to the subject of man-strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What is man-strength?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Man-strength is the inherent strength we\u2019ve been given by God, as men. God gave Adam authority, right off the block \/ right out of the chute\u2014He gave him the power to name the animals \/ He gave him the power to name his wife\u2014that is symbolic of God giving authority. Adam had that authority right away. My argument is that we have that simply because we\u2019re created in the image of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have strength that can shape things and shape people\u2019s lives, just by virtue of our presence\u2014how we carry ourselves, and the things that we say. We have that man-strength in our DNA from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What I hear you saying is\u2014God created man and instantly imbued, within him, the assignment of having dominion\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014dominion over creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, ultimately, as He made Eve\u2014a dominion\/a responsibility, not to rule over, with a fist or to use her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but to properly protect her, care for her, and love her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, because some guys hear you say, \u201cOkay, man-strength is authority\u2014got it! I\u2019m glad you said that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Tender warrior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s right. The authority has connected to it significant responsibility to care for that which is under your care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. That\u2019s exactly why God gives us the authority. It is so that we can expand God\u2019s rule in the earth\u2014expand the reflection of God in my children\u2019s lives, in my wife\u2019s life, in my work, in everything that I touch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to operate in that authority because there is a sinister plot, by the devil, to make men operate as if we have no authority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, Sheri, I heard you kind of saying, \u201cAmen,\u201d as we were talking about the need for a man to properly protect his wife. What gives Rod that authority? Now, we know God gave him the responsibility to care for you and protect you but, practically speaking, as you see him living that out, what gives him that authority in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> The fact that he is a tender warrior\u2014the fact that he is sacrificial in his love for me\u2014the fact that he denies himself to see the kids and I prosper and do well \/ that he serves us. His servant heart gives him the ability to rule in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How have you seen him deny himself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Well, you know, the simple things like going to work every day to serve us. There\u2019s not a need or a desire that we have that he does not get on his knees about, and asking God, \u201cHow am I going to make a way for my family?\u201d There is not an emotional need that I can\u2019t come to him with and experience his tender understanding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want to stop there. I want to say\u2014I\u2019m glad you mentioned that he sacrifices by going to work every day. I really mean that because I think sometimes men, in this culture\u2014where having much, or having more, or gaining more assets and accumulating things\u2014that\u2019s where it\u2019s really found. What I heard you saying\u2014he communicates your value\/your worth by being a man who faithfully provides for you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as a wife and as the mother of your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you talk about man-strength in the book, but you didn\u2019t put barbells on the front of the book. You put an umbrella on the front of the book. [Laughter] Why is that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes, because the covering is about creating that safe space. Red is for the blood of Christ. I believe that that blood\u2014as Christ\u2019s blood is operating in my life\u2014I become a better \u201ccoverer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a red umbrella. That\u2019s why\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the book is called <em>Cover Her;<\/em> right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Rod, you differentiate, in the book, between what you call \u201cactive covering\u201d and \u201cpassive covering.\u201d You also talk about \u201ccorrupted covering.\u201d Explain all three of those; can you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Sure; absolutely. Active covering is for those God has assigned to you in marriage and as your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> It\u2019s where I make sure that Sheri and the kids\u2014financially\u2014to the best of my ability \/ anything that I can do\u2014they are provided for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is your duty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> This is my duty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If we were talking football terms, because you\u2019ve been a chaplain for the Baltimore Ravens for years, when a linebacker or a defensive back has a coverage area, that\u2019s his turf. He\u2019s supposed to make sure nothing happens on that turf that causes the ball to get past him; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s his assignment. If he blows his coverage, the entire team suffers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> If I blow my coverage toward my wife and my children, not only do they suffer presently, but they could suffer for generations. It\u2019s an enormous responsibility. So, I take the active covering. I have to be very intentional about covering them physically: \u201cDo you have what you need in your account?\u201d \u201cWhat are the needs coming up in the family?\u201d Emotionally: \u201cWhat do you need from me?\u201d I have to ask that question, and that\u2019s a scary question for a man. I have to be very intentional about that with my wife and with my kids. I say the girls but, of course, that applies to my son as well. That\u2019s active covering. Passive covering\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before you go on\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I just want to say that your son is getting a lesson in manhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in men being strong\u2014by watching you care for your wife and your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And not blow your coverage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes. That\u2019s been one of the joys of my journey. I have one son and, as I mentioned, I didn\u2019t have a father, growing up. I\u2019ve been very conscious about what I pass on to him because I know he\u2019ll carry the torch for the next generation. It has been fun. I talk to him about learning how to\u2014what the girls need from him as their brother \/ how to create that safe place for them, even as a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; what is passive covering?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Passive covering has to do with women who are in my sphere, as a man, otherwise\u2014whether they\u2019re in church, whether they\u2019re at work, even if I\u2019m on the bus or somewhere in the market. I have a posture that says to them: \u201cI\u2019m safe to be around. There won\u2019t be any aggression. I won\u2019t be offensive. I won\u2019t look at you or approach you inappropriately.\u201d That\u2019s passive covering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, now about corrupted covering\u2014what\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Corrupted covering is when you try to cover people that you have no business covering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> So, for example, as a married person, it\u2019s inappropriate for me to go to a single woman\u2019s home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014to fix her faucet, or to fix a flat tire, or to try to provide for the needs of her and her children when God has assigned me my wife and my kids. That is corrupted covering. One of the ways we\u2019ve seen corrupted covering has been the misuse of power and authority in the church, where a lot of bad ministry has taken place when men of God have stepped beyond the boundaries and kind of twisted their protection and covering of women for sexual reasons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019ve used their authority\u2014the position that God\u2019s given them\u2014for gain \/ for their own purposes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014rather than for what God would intend; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I can\u2019t help but think, Sheri, as you listen to Rod talk about his assignment and his understanding of his assignment, that it just kind of causes your heart to swell\u2014and your face is bursting with a smile right now. [Laughter] I mean\u2014really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes! I feel very blessed. I feel very loved\u2014I\u2019m thankful \/ I\u2019m thankful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A woman was made to be cared for like this by God. A man is never more of a man than when he\u2019s making his wife feel like you look right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes, thank you. I would say that, coming from my own background of being uncovered, Rod is a true blessing. When we first met and we were dating, I was just in awe that God would, in my own brokenness, still provide me with someone who would love me beyond my shame, beyond my guilt, beyond my sin, and that God would give me such a gift to provide me with someone who would cover me for the rest of my life\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Rod, you\u2019re a pastor. We\u2019re calling men to step up here. We can\u2019t do this physically\u2014there are a lot of guys who didn\u2019t have a dad either\u2014I think they need to be commissioned, right here. Would you pray over them and, in the process of praying over them, would you commission them to find a Crawford Loritts \/ to find a mentor and to get serious about God in their lives and about becoming the man God made them to be, even in their brokenness and in the vacuum they\u2019ve got in their lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFather, in Jesus\u2019 name, we pray for every man\u2014not only listening to this broadcast, but in our nation \/ in our world\u2014who has no idea of the power and the authority residing in him to make such a tremendous difference in the lives of the ladies around him. Rod Hairston says, when that coverage breaks down, the family finds itself under attack.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> When it comes to spiritually covering, sometimes it\u2019s just a simple prayer\u2014 sometimes it\u2019s not even praying with your wife\u2014it\u2019s just whispering a prayer for her. If a guy will do that, it will make a tremendous difference. Sometimes I just have to say, \u201cI prayed for you today.\u201d When it comes to emotionally covering, it\u2019s simply being able to say: \u201cAre you okay? Do you need anything from me?\u201d That\u2019s the scary space for a man. We\u2019ll talk to Rod Hairston today, along with his wife Sheri, about a husband\u2019s assignment in marriage. I think we will, but\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> People are going to be shocked that this is not rehearsed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not rehearsed \/ we did not talk about this ahead of time. We never talk about things\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s what I was getting ready to say! [Laughter] Let\u2019s just clear that up\u2014this is not a scripted broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is <em>real <\/em>family life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so a woman\u2019s number one need from a man\u2014what does she need?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, she needs to be loved, and she needs to be secure. I\u2019d put those words together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because if she doesn\u2019t feel safe, she hasn\u2019t been loved and she\u2019s not secure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was going to say safety too. So, we were on the same page to start with. The number one thing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s ask our guests!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we should.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Rod and Sheri Hairston join us on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Sheri, Rod\u2014welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> What a joy to be here!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sheri, what about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: I would say, for me, the answer is security.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What does that look like to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri<\/strong>: It looks like protection, provision, prayer covering. It looks like love\u2014acceptance of who I am.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like you\u2019ve been reading the book your husband wrote. [Laughter] It does; doesn\u2019t it?\u2014because that\u2019s exactly what he talks about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The book is <em>Cover Her<\/em>. How would you answer the question; Rod?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I would say, definitely, security. I would say \u201cvalued.\u201d As you put the two words \u201clove\u201d and \u201csecurity\u201d together, I would put \u201csecurity\u201d and \u201cvalued\u201d together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay\u2014that\u2019s great. Well, Rod and Sheri have been married since 1991. They have four children, ages 17-22. Rod doesn\u2019t have these rings on his fingers\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014and I\u2019m ticked off because\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wanted to see them! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wanted\u2014no, I didn\u2019t want to see them \/ I wanted to wear them! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to put both rings on my fingers and then post or send it out on my Twitter account.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do a hand selfie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes! [Laughter] Absolutely, because he\u2019s been a part of two Super Bowl\u2014count them\u2014NFL championships with the Baltimore Ravens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he has been the chaplain for the Ravens for 14 years. He is, today, the pastor at Messiah Community Church in Owens Mills, Maryland.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just recently retired from that chaplain role with the Ravens; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes, just a year ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, so the next time they get a Super Bowl ring, you don\u2019t get it; do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Unfortunately; [Laughter] but I can say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri: <\/strong>We want them to win.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014that we definitely want them to win. It was such a blessing to be part of two Super Bowls. I\u2019m the only pastor I know with two Super Bowl rings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hey! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I want to go back to your book because a number of guys have read my book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. What I\u2019d like to say is\u2014this book, right here, fills in a lot of blanks that I left in <em>Stepping Up <\/em>about how a man can step up, as a husband, and truly protect, and care for, and spiritually guide and cover his wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s just pull back to the beginning and what the big idea for the book is, Rod.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> The big idea for <em>Cover Her <\/em>is\u2014and it\u2019s in the subtitle\u2014<em>How Men Can Create a Safe Place for the Ladies in Their Lives<\/em>\u2014physically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Our job\u2014our calling\/our assignment from God\u2014and we get this from Genesis by virtue of the principle of first mention\u2014that: \u201cAdam was assigned and called to protect the space God had put him in. Because He put Eve in that space, he was thereby to protect her as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You actually start the book, not by talking about a man\u2019s role in relation to the women in his life, but you start by talking about a man understanding what manhood\u2019s all about in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you worked with the Baltimore Ravens. I mean, guys in the NFL are kind of the epitome of masculinity in a culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I\u2019m guessing that some of those guys were confused about what real manhood is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely! They were; I was; so many of the men that I encounter in my ministry are confused about what it means to be a man. In the book, I talk about how society has really kind of confused and feminized what it means to be a man. So we have to have a conversation, early in the book and early in our relationships with men, about: \u201cWhat does it really mean to be a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if you\u2019re sitting down with a guy, and we\u2019ll just say he\u2019s a rookie; okay? He\u2019s come on the football team; he\u2019s a rookie; he\u2019s kind of got some swagger about him and all of that. He\u2019s got this idea that manhood looks like being tough or bragging. If you\u2019re going to correct him on that, where do you start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I start with his number one issue\u2014and this is the number one issue for all of us, as men. My number one responsibility, as a man\u2014the number one thing that identifies me, as a man\u2014is my response to God and my responsibility under that call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, it\u2019s a man\u2019s relationship with God that defines his manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A lot of guys get their identity from their career path, their address, what they\u2019re driving, what they\u2019re wearing,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the amount of money in their checking account. You\u2019re saying it\u2019s a spiritual address that gives a guy a sense of significance in knowing who he is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. The clarity comes when I begin to commune with God \/ relate to God. I begin to find out who I really am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> You see, because what I learned first is all of the extrinsic things. When I come to God, He begins to work on the inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> He begins to tell me who I am against the backdrop of my brokenness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s where you develop, in the book, this idea of man-strength.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That a guy has got to develop man-strength. Unpack what you mean by that phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, before you do that, though, Bob, I\u2019ve got to just turn to Sheri, at this point. Go all the way back to 1991.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes\u2014May 26<sup>th<\/sup>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go!\u2014when you married Rod. How well did he know his address\u2014his identity as a man, back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Well, I have to say that, in the past 23 years, he\u2019s grown a lot in that area. But there was always been something about Rod. The thing that attracted me most to him was his heart for God\u2014that has never changed\u2014his desire to know God, and to love God, and to let others know God and love God has been very attractive to me. That hasn\u2019t changed. So some of it, he already had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So he had the DNA.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> He had the DNA; it\u2019s grown and developed over the years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he\u2019s learned some of the skills, though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where I want to develop, for men, some hope that they don\u2019t have to be exactly like Rod Hairston 23 years later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, you\u2019ve been in the incubator here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. This has been a journey\u2014it\u2019s been a process. I grew up without my dad. I was <em>constantly<\/em> trying to find my identity\u2014searching for significance. In that short span of years, I looked for it in <em>all <\/em>of the wrong things; but, when I began to connect with God, intimately, something changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of guys, Rod, who probably were near to turning this radio program off because they are going: \u201cHere we go again! Here\u2019s a guy who\u2019s got it all together. He did it from Day One. He\u2019s had all of the gears in place since the beginning.\u201d But you just said you didn\u2019t have a dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t have most of the gears in place\u2014I promise you. In fact, when my wife got me, she kind of got me just out of the bakery shop, if you will. [Laughter] I was just done\u2014I mean, just half-baked. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was really <em>raw <\/em>in the process of my manhood. One of the big things for me was that I struggled with my identity. I spent a lot of time discouraged about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She told me that it was one of those take home and bake pizzas. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014she controlled the temperature! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! Yes, she did; yes, she did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So let\u2019s go back to the subject of man-strength. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What is man-strength?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Man-strength is the inherent strength we\u2019ve been given by God, as men. God gave Adam authority, right off the block \/ right out of the chute\u2014He gave him the power to name the animals \/ He gave him the power to name his wife\u2014that is symbolic of God giving authority. Adam had that authority right away. My argument is that we have that simply because we\u2019re created in the image of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have strength that can shape things and shape people\u2019s lives, just by virtue of our presence\u2014how we carry ourselves, and the things that we say. We have that man-strength in our DNA from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What I hear you saying is\u2014God created man and instantly imbued, within him, the assignment of having dominion\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014dominion over creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, ultimately, as He made Eve\u2014a dominion\/a responsibility, not to rule over, with a fist or to use her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but to properly protect her, care for her, and love her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, because some guys hear you say, \u201cOkay, man-strength is authority\u2014got it! I\u2019m glad you said that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Tender warrior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s right. The authority has connected to it significant responsibility to care for that which is under your care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely. That\u2019s exactly why God gives us the authority. It is so that we can expand God\u2019s rule in the earth\u2014expand the reflection of God in my children\u2019s lives, in my wife\u2019s life, in my work, in everything that I touch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to operate in that authority because there is a sinister plot, by the devil, to make men operate as if we have no authority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, Sheri, I heard you kind of saying, \u201cAmen,\u201d as we were talking about the need for a man to properly protect his wife. What gives Rod that authority? Now, we know God gave him the responsibility to care for you and protect you but, practically speaking, as you see him living that out, what gives him that authority in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> The fact that he is a tender warrior\u2014the fact that he is sacrificial in his love for me\u2014the fact that he denies himself to see the kids and I prosper and do well \/ that he serves us. His servant heart gives him the ability to rule in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How have you seen him deny himself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Well, you know, the simple things like going to work every day to serve us. There\u2019s not a need or a desire that we have that he does not get on his knees about, and asking God, \u201cHow am I going to make a way for my family?\u201d There is not an emotional need that I can\u2019t come to him with and experience his tender understanding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want to stop there. I want to say\u2014I\u2019m glad you mentioned that he sacrifices by going to work every day. I really mean that because I think sometimes men, in this culture\u2014where having much, or having more, or gaining more assets and accumulating things\u2014that\u2019s where it\u2019s really found. What I heard you saying\u2014he communicates your value\/your worth by being a man who faithfully provides for you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as a wife and as the mother of your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you talk about man-strength in the book, but you didn\u2019t put barbells on the front of the book. You put an umbrella on the front of the book. [Laughter] Why is that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes, because the covering is about creating that safe space. Red is for the blood of Christ. I believe that that blood\u2014as Christ\u2019s blood is operating in my life\u2014I become a better \u201ccoverer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a red umbrella. That\u2019s why\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the book is called <em>Cover Her;<\/em> right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Rod, you differentiate, in the book, between what you call \u201cactive covering\u201d and \u201cpassive covering.\u201d You also talk about \u201ccorrupted covering.\u201d Explain all three of those; can you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Sure; absolutely. Active covering is for those God has assigned to you in marriage and as your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> It\u2019s where I make sure that Sheri and the kids\u2014financially\u2014to the best of my ability \/ anything that I can do\u2014they are provided for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is your duty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> This is my duty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If we were talking football terms, because you\u2019ve been a chaplain for the Baltimore Ravens for years, when a linebacker or a defensive back has a coverage area, that\u2019s his turf. He\u2019s supposed to make sure nothing happens on that turf that causes the ball to get past him; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s his assignment. If he blows his coverage, the entire team suffers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> If I blow my coverage toward my wife and my children, not only do they suffer presently, but they could suffer for generations. It\u2019s an enormous responsibility. So, I take the active covering. I have to be very intentional about covering them physically: \u201cDo you have what you need in your account?\u201d \u201cWhat are the needs coming up in the family?\u201d Emotionally: \u201cWhat do you need from me?\u201d I have to ask that question, and that\u2019s a scary question for a man. I have to be very intentional about that with my wife and with my kids. I say the girls but, of course, that applies to my son as well. That\u2019s active covering. Passive covering\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before you go on\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I just want to say that your son is getting a lesson in manhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in men being strong\u2014by watching you care for your wife and your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And not blow your coverage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Yes. That\u2019s been one of the joys of my journey. I have one son and, as I mentioned, I didn\u2019t have a father, growing up. I\u2019ve been very conscious about what I pass on to him because I know he\u2019ll carry the torch for the next generation. It has been fun. I talk to him about learning how to\u2014what the girls need from him as their brother \/ how to create that safe place for them, even as a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; what is passive covering?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Passive covering has to do with women who are in my sphere, as a man, otherwise\u2014whether they\u2019re in church, whether they\u2019re at work, even if I\u2019m on the bus or somewhere in the market. I have a posture that says to them: \u201cI\u2019m safe to be around. There won\u2019t be any aggression. I won\u2019t be offensive. I won\u2019t look at you or approach you inappropriately.\u201d That\u2019s passive covering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, now about corrupted covering\u2014what\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Corrupted covering is when you try to cover people that you have no business covering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> So, for example, as a married person, it\u2019s inappropriate for me to go to a single woman\u2019s home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod: <\/strong>\u2014to fix her faucet, or to fix a flat tire, or to try to provide for the needs of her and her children when God has assigned me my wife and my kids. That is corrupted covering. One of the ways we\u2019ve seen corrupted covering has been the misuse of power and authority in the church, where a lot of bad ministry has taken place when men of God have stepped beyond the boundaries and kind of twisted their protection and covering of women for sexual reasons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019ve used their authority\u2014the position that God\u2019s given them\u2014for gain \/ for their own purposes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014rather than for what God would intend; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I can\u2019t help but think, Sheri, as you listen to Rod talk about his assignment and his understanding of his assignment, that it just kind of causes your heart to swell\u2014and your face is bursting with a smile right now. [Laughter] I mean\u2014really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes! I feel very blessed. I feel very loved\u2014I\u2019m thankful \/ I\u2019m thankful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A woman was made to be cared for like this by God. A man is never more of a man than when he\u2019s making his wife feel like you look right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sheri:<\/strong> Yes, thank you. I would say that, coming from my own background of being uncovered, Rod is a true blessing. When we first met and we were dating, I was just in awe that God would, in my own brokenness, still provide me with someone who would love me beyond my shame, beyond my guilt, beyond my sin, and that God would give me such a gift to provide me with someone who would cover me for the rest of my life\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Rod, you\u2019re a pastor. We\u2019re calling men to step up here. We can\u2019t do this physically\u2014there are a lot of guys who didn\u2019t have a dad either\u2014I think they need to be commissioned, right here. Would you pray over them and, in the process of praying over them, would you commission them to find a Crawford Loritts \/ to find a mentor and to get serious about God in their lives and about becoming the man God made them to be, even in their brokenness and in the vacuum they\u2019ve got in their lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rod:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFather, in Jesus\u2019 name, we pray for every man\u2014not only listening to this broadcast, but in our nation \/ in our world\u2014who has no idea of the power and the authority residing in him to make such a tremendous difference in the lives of the ladies around him.
