I hope you\u2019re having a <em>merry<\/em> Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition\u2014the Christmas Day edition. We\u2019re glad that you have tuned in, spending part of your Christmas Day with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you the theme of what we\u2019re going to consider today is something that, I think, is absent from too much of our Christian faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. In fact, I think a lot of us need to tell our face that we need to have joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our face that we\u2019re saved; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re saved and our eternal destiny is secure because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. This sacred holiday of Christmas\u2014I hate to say that it\u2019s second to Easter\u2014but, without Christmas, Easter can\u2019t be a reality either\u2014so it\u2019s equal to Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, of course, without Easter, the significance of Jesus\u2019 birthday would not matter. I mean, if it weren\u2019t for what He did at Easter, we wouldn\u2019t be remembering His birth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So I think you\u2019re right\u2014I think the manger and the cross are tied together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are and, as our listeners know, all this month, we\u2019ve been talking about Barbara\u2019s Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I hope your Christmas tree has the Savior names of Jesus Christ hanging on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I hope you\u2019ve had a chance to talk to your kids about \u201cjoy to the world, the Lord has come.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, I really do think that\u2014of all of the fruit of the Spirit\u2014joy is an apologetic for our faith that I think is missing from our witness, for many of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me ask you a question because we\u2019re getting ready to listen to a sermon that you gave, around Christmas time, about six years ago. In this message, do you give a comprehensive air-tight description of joy?\u2014because, honestly, Bob, I think joy is one of the most misunderstood terms that are thrown around in the community of faith in Christ. Have you got a definition that you can give our listeners?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s been six years, but I think I do. Let\u2019s listen and, if I don\u2019t, by the end of what we hear today, you can wrap it up for us; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; I\u2019ll be able to take care of it with an air-tight description of joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This morning, I want to talk about the theme of joy. It\u2019s really central to the message of Christmas. If you stop and think about it\u2014think about how often, in the Christmas carols and hymns that we sing, the word \u201cjoy\u201d or \u201crejoice\u201d shows up:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2026tidings of comfort and\u201d\u2014what? \u2014\u201c<em>joy<\/em>\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGood Christian men, <em>rejoice<\/em>\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cO come, all ye faithful, <em>joyful <\/em>and triumphant\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c<em>Joyful, <\/em>all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies...\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2026the mountains in reply echo back their <em>joyous <\/em>strains.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe thrill of earth a weary world <em>rejoices...<\/em>\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cSweet hymns of <em>joy <\/em>in grateful chorus raise we\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201c<em>Rejoice! Rejoice! <\/em>Emmanuel has come to thee, O Israel!<em>\u201d<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, of course, \u201c<em>Joy <\/em>to the world\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason that joy is so central to everything that we celebrate at Christmas is because, in part, of what the angels told the shepherds in Luke, Chapter 2, in verse 10\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when he told them, first of all, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d He said, \u201cI bring you good tidings of great joy, for unto you is born this day\u201d\u2014and, by the way, it\u2019s\u2014\u201cgreat joy which shall be for all men; for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, anytime a baby is born\u2014almost any time a baby is born\u2014there is joy. I mean, when your babies were born, you had joy; didn\u2019t you? And when a close friend has a birth of a newborn baby, there\u2019s typically joy among those who know that baby. But here, the angel says this joy is going to be \u201cfor all men,\u201d\u2014that the birth of this baby is not just joy because a woman\u2019s having a baby in a stable in Bethlehem, but there\u2019s something about this baby that is going to bring joy to all people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, with that in mind, I wanted us to take some time just to reflect on this theme of joy, and why it\u2019s tied to Christmas, and how it ought to be tied to everything about our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you need to know that we can only scratch the surface on the subject of joy. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve stopped to do this\u2014but if you ever look through the Bible at how many times \u201cjoy,\u201d \u201crejoicing,\u201d \u201cgladness\u201d\u2014how those themes show up\u2014do a word study sometime on those words: \u201cjoy\u201d or \u201crejoice\u201d or \u201cgladness.\u201d Get out your <em>Strong\u2019s Commentary<\/em>. If you\u2019ve got Bible study software, type those in and just see how many times those words show up and in what kinds of environments and situations they show up. Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll find\u2014you\u2019ll find that the theme of joy is all through the Bible\u2014it\u2019s everywhere \/ it\u2019s central.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know why I never thought about this before\u2014but you know, we think about redemption, and salvation, and the gospel\u2014and how that is central to the message of God. But, in the midst of all of that, God is saying: \u201cLook! There ought to be joy here!\u201d Joy is central to what God has in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the Bible, as I said, talks a lot about joy\u2014you know that joy is a fruit of the Spirit. You know that we\u2019re to come into God\u2019s presence with joy and with thanksgiving. Then, when we go out, we\u2019re to go out with joy and be led forth in peace. \u201cWe\u2019re to rejoice in the Lord always; and, again, we say rejoice!\u201d We\u2019re to serve the Lord with joy and with gladness. It says, when children are living righteous lives, that parents know no greater joy than that. John says about his spiritual children: \u201cI have no greater joy than to see my children walking in the truth.\u201d We could go on and on with passages that you\u2019re familiar with that talk about joy\u2014you get the idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the question is: \u201cWhy is this theme so central to the Scriptures? Why is this here?\u201d I believe\u2014and here is what I\u2019m going to suggest, as we go through this\u2014I believe that God created all of us with a longing for joy. In the heart of every person in this room and every person in the world, there is a longing to experience joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason God put that in your heart is because real joy comes in a reconciled connected relationship with God. God put the desire for joy in your heart to drive you in His direction \/ to press you toward Him. One more verse\u2014this is one that may be less familiar\u2014Psalm 63, verse 3 says: \u201cBut the righteous shall be glad. They shall exult before God. They shall be jubilant with joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a picture of what God\u2014He puts a desire in our hearts for joy; and then He says, \u201cAnd I\u2019ve got it\u2014it\u2019s here.\u201d I don\u2019t know much about hunting, but the salt lick idea\u2014you put salt out there, and the deer lick it, and then they go for water; right? Is that how it works? The idea, I think, is that God has put in our heart\u2014He has salted us for joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen He says: \u201cIt\u2019s here. Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll find fulfillment.\u201d So he puts the desire there to drive us to Himself. Let\u2019s, first of all, define what we\u2019re talking about when we\u2019re talking about joy. Joy is different than\u2014we\u2019ll talk about what it is\u2014but we have to first start by talking about what it\u2019s not. Joy is different than happiness; isn\u2019t it? I mean, that\u2019s pretty simple \/ pretty elementary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard a British gentleman speak one time. He said, in England\u2014in the old days\u2014they used to have an expression where they would say, \u201cMay the haps be with you.\u201d What they were saying was, \u201cMay you have good fortune that would bring you happiness.\u201d He said: \u201cTied to happiness were your circumstances. If your fortunes were good, you would have happiness.\u201d So, \u201cMay the haps be with you,\u201d was a way of saying, \u201cMay stuff go well so that you\u2019ll have happiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went, online, to see if I could find verification for that. What I did find that was interesting is\u2014that the number of people that are using the term \u201chaps\u201d today, just to talk about\u2014as a short-hand for what\u2019s happening in their life\u2014so lots of blogs that are: \u201cHere\u2019s the haps,\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s the haps?\u201d Those are the expressions being used. But happiness is tied to circumstance. If you\u2019re having a good day and things are going well, you\u2019re happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJoy is different\u2014joy is deeper. When we talk about joy, we are talking about a sense of peace and well-being in your soul that results in contentment and may result in some experience of exuberance\u2014not always. When you think of joyful people, you think of somebody jumping, or dancing, or feeling exuberant; but you\u2019ve all experienced that quiet, contented, soul-satisfying joy\u2014that there\u2019s no jumping or dancing going on. There might be in some circumstances; but in others, there\u2019s just a sense of peace and well-being in your soul\u2014a contentedness that is great soul-satisfaction and joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe experienced some of that at Thanksgiving this year. Our whole family flew to Seattle and had a great time celebrating Thanksgiving together, as a family. We went to the Pike Market, near downtown Seattle, and did the shopping around there. We went to see a movie together. We had one night, where we just sat around and we shared memories and talked about family stuff. Mary Ann said, later on, that was probably the highlight of the trip for her\u2014was just sitting around with the family, talking about family and memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I have to tell you\u2014I have been in cities that I think are nicer than Seattle. Seattle\u2019s a nice town, but I\u2019ve been in nicer places. I\u2019ve stayed in nicer hotels than the hotel we stayed in. I\u2019ve eaten better food than what we ate that week, although the food was fine. I\u2019ve had better weather and a better climate than we experienced. I think nice cities, and nice hotels, and nice food, and nice climate are all nice things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we had joy, not because of that stuff\u2014we experienced a taste of joy based on the relationships\u2014not based on our circumstances or our environment. You\u2019ve heard couples\u2014and some of you have said this\u2014I\u2019ve heard couples, who have said: \u201cYou know, back when we first got married, we were so poor we lived in a small apartment. All we had to eat were beanie weenies and all of that.\u201d You know? You get the whole thing; but they say, \u201cThose were some of the happiest times of our lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat are they saying? They\u2019re saying there\u2019s something about joy that transcends your experiences. Now let me just ask you: \u201cWhen I was talking about our family being together, and what we experienced, did some of you resonate with that just a little bit and have just kind of a taste of the joy?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I\u2019m describing it, you\u2019re thinking\u2014there\u2019s this longing in all of our hearts, where we say: \u201cI want that! I crave that.\u201d I mean, you\u2019re glad for me\u2014that we had a taste of it\u2014but you\u2019re also thinking, \u201cWhere do I get some of that?\u201d I think that that longing is in everyone\u2019s heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I\u2019m suggesting this morning is that joy is deeper than happiness. The second thing I want to suggest this morning is that I believe that everybody, in this room, and everybody, in the world, has this deep desire \/ a heart longing to experience joy. I believe that that longing really is what motivates the decision-making of your life on a day-in\/day-out basis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFollow me on this\u2014I believe that your longing for joy is the motivating driver for every choice you make, day in and day out. You\u2019re making decisions that you think\u2014either consciously or subconsciously\u2014that you calculate, \u201cIf I do these things, it will maximize my experience of joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe, not only is the heart longing for joy, fundamentally and primarily\u2014I think it drives everybody\u2019s life. I think the decisions you make are based on, \u201cWill this bring me joy?\u201d When you got up this morning, you got dressed to come to church. Somewhere, in the motivational structure of your life, was this thought, \u201cI will have more joy if I get up this morning, and go and get dressed, and come to church than if I sleep in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know some of you are thinking, \u201cNo, I was actually thinking I\u2019d have more joy if I slept in this morning.\u201d [Laughter] But, really, deep down, whether you\u2019re here out of a sense of longing and desire to be with God\u2019s people and to hear God\u2019s Word preached and you just couldn\u2019t wait to get here and be with everybody else; or whether you\u2019re here because you thought, \u201cWell, I kind of have a duty and a responsibility.\u201d Whatever it was\u2014the calculation in your mind was, \u201cI\u2019ll have more joy at the end of the day if I do that than if I don\u2019t.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you go to work tomorrow, you\u2019ll be going to work because you believe something about going to work will bring more joy than if you don\u2019t go to work tomorrow\u2014whether it\u2019s a paycheck, whether it\u2019s keeping your job, whatever it is. Something\u2019s calculated to say, \u201cI\u2019ll be happier \/ I\u2019ll have more joy, at the end of the day, if I do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you go out to lunch today and you decide not to have the dessert, there will be something in your motivational structure that says, \u201cI will have more joy if I don\u2019t eat the dessert today than if I do eat the dessert.\u201d Or if you <em>do <\/em>eat the dessert, you\u2019ll think, \u201cI\u2019ll have more joy if I do that!\u201d It\u2019s all based on what\u2019s going to bring the most joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019m suggesting is that every choice you make\u2014everything you do or don\u2019t do\u2014everything you eat or don\u2019t eat\u2014everything you ingest, or smoke, or snort, or don\u2019t ingest, or don\u2019t smoke, or don\u2019t snort\u2014all of that is fueled by a longing for joy. Everyone, on planet earth, is doing whatever we do, at any given moment, because we think, \u201cThat thing will maximize our joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m also suggesting that it\u2019s God who put that longing in your heart because, as I think we\u2019ll see, God designed it to lead us\u2014not to food, or to friends, or to family\u2014but back to Him. C.S. Lewis said this: \u201cJoy is the serious business of heaven,\u201d\u2014I like that quote. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhich brings me to the third thing I want to talk about\u2014I want to talk about where joy comes from and where it doesn\u2019t come from. When I was a kid\u2014at Christmas, I remember this progression that took place every year in my life. The progression was this\u2014back, right after Thanksgiving, you started making your list of what you wanted for Christmas. That started to maybe generate some longing in your heart for the realization of joy that would come when you got what you wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the things I wanted for Christmas had been not so subtly implanted in my brain from\u00a0 watching cartoons on Saturday mornings; okay? You younger people here need to know that, when your parents were growing up, the only time you could see cartoons was an hour after school and on Saturday morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know, now, you\u2019ve got Cartoon Disney, and Nickelodeon, and the Cartoon Network\u2014you can watch a cartoon any time you want\u2014but in those days, getting up to watch the cartoons on Saturday morning, or watching <em>Huckleberry Hound<\/em>, and <em>Deputy Dog<\/em>, and those guys right after school\u2014<em>Rocky and Bullwinkle<\/em>\u2014right after school\u2014I mean, this was big stuff! And the toymakers knew it. Right before Christmas, they were showing 30 seconds of the flashiest toys\u2014the desire was in your heart to want those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you made out your list \/ you put the toys you wanted on that list. That was the first part of the progression. The <em>longing <\/em>was beginning to evolve in your heart. You put the list together and now, you\u2019ve got weeks to go before Christmas. Every day, the longing intensifies. You think, \u201cShould I look under my parents\u2019 bed?\u201d\u2014right? Or you think, \u201cShould I try to see if I\u2019m going to get it?\u201d You pick up the package and do this\u2014or you try to figure out what it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there\u2019s Christmas morning. On Christmas morning, we got up early. I was always up early. My parents would say, \u201cWe\u2019ll wait \u2018til 8:00 to open the presents.\u201d I said: \u201cNo! You can\u2019t wait \u2018til 8:00.\u201d I wanted to start at <em>5:00<\/em> on Christmas morning; right? Now, that I\u2019m a parent, I understand what a crazy thought that was\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but I wanted to get up and get it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019d go down and you\u2019d get your presents. You\u2019d have to wait patiently until the one that was yours was passed to you. You\u2019d <em>rip <\/em>off the paper and there it is!\u2014the thing you\u2019d been longing, more often than not, the thing that was on your list\u2014that you\u2019d been longing for\u2014is there. There\u2019s this rush\u2014this flood of: \u201cYes!! Joy! I have what is going to bring me great joy and happiness\u2014this toy!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, one year, it was a racetrack that I got. The controllers for the race cars had steering wheels on them. To make the car go around the track, you had to steer the wheel in order to get the car to go around the track. If you were racing with a friend, I mean, it was a real test of skill. It wasn\u2019t just that you had a faster car\u2014you were skillfully driving your car around the track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was excited to get it and I got it. We spent the rest of the morning setting it up, down on a table down in the basement. We got the track all set up and, finally, it\u2019s ready to play\u2014and you can put it on there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMan, oh man, you\u2019re steering! You\u2019ve got the speed on one side \/ you\u2019ve got the steering wheel on the other. It was a test of skill, and I loved it!\u2014for about an hour-and-a-half. And then\u2014what had looked, on the TV, like it was going to be the thing that would make me happy and joyful for so long\u2014started to feel the fade real quick. You started to just drain out and you started to feel\u2014interestingly, you started to feel kind of empty and kind of lonely\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because this thing you thought was going to satisfy\u2014it did for a minute or half a day\u2014and then it just didn\u2019t happen. There were still glimpses\u2014you\u2019d come home from school, a week or two later. You\u2019d go down and play with the car for about 15 or 20 minutes and then get bored with that. A month later, the cars are boxed up in a box somewhere because you need the table for something else and, besides, \u201cYou never play with that thing anyway\u201d; and it\u2019s gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat progression, year in and year out\u2014longing, followed by an experience of joy, followed by loneliness or emptiness\u2014what I experienced on Christmas morning, year after year, I think, becomes the regular rhythm of life for a lot of people. I think this is how many people are living their lives, whether it\u2019s living for the weekend or whether it\u2019s living for the next promotion, or whether it\u2019s living for the next moment or memory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe rhythm of their life is expectation, and longing, fulfillment, and then a sense that: \u201cThat didn\u2019t really satisfy the way I thought it was going to satisfy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re going to cut in here, as we\u2019ve been considering the subject of joy, here on Christmas Day. I almost hate that we have to cut in because what we\u2019re doing here\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really liked your message, Bob! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The rest of the story, which our listeners are going to have to hear tomorrow, really talks about the source of joy\u2014and how you get out of the trap of that experiential, momentary euphoria and get to know real joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes! God created us to be joyful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the deal\u2014because of Christmas Day, it ought to be found in us. I think, here on Christmas\u2014if your family is still gathered together, maybe over dinner tonight or a little bit later on \/ sitting by the fire\u2014maybe what you ought to do is just push back and say, \u201cWhat is the source of joy in your life?\u201d Because we\u2019re going to hear Bob finish his message tomorrow. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition\u2014the Christmas Day edition. We\u2019re glad that you have tuned in, spending part of your Christmas Day with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you the theme of what we\u2019re going to consider today is something that, I think, is absent from too much of our Christian faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. In fact, I think a lot of us need to tell our face that we need to have joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our face that we\u2019re saved; right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re saved and our eternal destiny is secure because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. This sacred holiday of Christmas\u2014I hate to say that it\u2019s second to Easter\u2014but, without Christmas, Easter can\u2019t be a reality either\u2014so it\u2019s equal to Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, of course, without Easter, the significance of Jesus\u2019 birthday would not matter. I mean, if it weren\u2019t for what He did at Easter, we wouldn\u2019t be remembering His birth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So I think you\u2019re right\u2014I think the manger and the cross are tied together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are and, as our listeners know, all this month, we\u2019ve been talking about Barbara\u2019s Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I hope your Christmas tree has the Savior names of Jesus Christ hanging on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I hope you\u2019ve had a chance to talk to your kids about \u201cjoy to the world, the Lord has come.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, I really do think that\u2014of all of the fruit of the Spirit\u2014joy is an apologetic for our faith that I think is missing from our witness, for many of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me ask you a question because we\u2019re getting ready to listen to a sermon that you gave, around Christmas time, about six years ago. In this message, do you give a comprehensive air-tight description of joy?\u2014because, honestly, Bob, I think joy is one of the most misunderstood terms that are thrown around in the community of faith in Christ. Have you got a definition that you can give our listeners?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s been six years, but I think I do. If you stop and think about it\u2014think about how often, in the Christmas carols and hymns that we sing, the word \u201cjoy\u201d or \u201crejoice\u201d shows up:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2026tidings of comfort and\u201d\u2014what? \u2014\u201c<em>joy<\/em>\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGood Christian men, <em>rejoice<\/em>\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cO come, all ye faithful, <em>joyful <\/em>and triumphant\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c<em>Joyful, <\/em>all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies...\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2026the mountains in reply echo back their <em>joyous <\/em>strains.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe thrill of earth a weary world <em>rejoices...<\/em>\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cSweet hymns of <em>joy <\/em>in grateful chorus raise we\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201c<em>Rejoice! Rejoice! <\/em>Emmanuel has come to thee, O Israel!<em>\u201d<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, of course, \u201c<em>Joy <\/em>to the world\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason that joy is so central to everything that we celebrate at Christmas is because, in part, of what the angels told the shepherds in Luke, Chapter 2, in verse 10\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when he told them, first of all, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d He said, \u201cI bring you good tidings of great joy, for unto you is born this day\u201d\u2014and, by the way, it\u2019s\u2014\u201cgreat joy which shall be for all men; for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, anytime a baby is born\u2014almost any time a baby is born\u2014there is joy. I mean, when your babies were born, you had joy; didn\u2019t you? And when a close friend has a birth of a newborn baby, there\u2019s typically joy among those who know that baby. But here, the angel says this joy is going to be \u201cfor all men,\u201d\u2014that the birth of this baby is not just joy because a woman\u2019s having a baby in a stable in Bethlehem, but there\u2019s something about this baby that is going to bring joy to all people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, with that in mind, I wanted us to take some time just to reflect on this theme of joy, and why it\u2019s tied to Christmas, and how it ought to be tied to everything about our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you need to know that we can only scratch the surface on the subject of joy. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve stopped to do this\u2014but if you ever look through the Bible at how many times \u201cjoy,\u201d \u201crejoicing,\u201d \u201cgladness\u201d\u2014how those themes show up\u2014do a word study sometime on those words: \u201cjoy\u201d or \u201crejoice\u201d or \u201cgladness.\u201d Get out your <em>Strong\u2019s Commentary<\/em>. If you\u2019ve got Bible study software, type those in and just see how many times those words show up and in what kinds of environments and situations they show up. Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll find\u2014you\u2019ll find that the theme of joy is all through the Bible\u2014it\u2019s everywhere \/ it\u2019s central.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know why I never thought about this before\u2014but you know, we think about redemption, and salvation, and the gospel\u2014and how that is central to the message of God. But, in the midst of all of that, God is saying: \u201cLook! There ought to be joy here!\u201d Joy is central to what God has in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the Bible, as I said, talks a lot about joy\u2014you know that joy is a fruit of the Spirit. You know that we\u2019re to come into God\u2019s presence with joy and with thanksgiving. Then, when we go out, we\u2019re to go out with joy and be led forth in peace. \u201cWe\u2019re to rejoice in the Lord always; and, again, we say rejoice!\u201d We\u2019re to serve the Lord with joy and with gladness. It says, when children are living righteous lives, that parents know no greater joy than that. John says about his spiritual children: \u201cI have no greater joy than to see my children walking in the truth.\u201d We could go on and on with passages that you\u2019re familiar with that talk about joy\u2014you get the idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the question is: \u201cWhy is this theme so central to the Scriptures? Why is this here?\u201d I believe\u2014and here is what I\u2019m going to suggest, as we go through this\u2014I believe that God created all of us with a longing for joy. In the heart of every person in this room and every person in the world, there is a longing to experience joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason God put that in your heart is because real joy comes in a reconciled connected relationship with God. God put the desire for joy in your heart to drive you in His direction \/ to press you toward Him. One more verse\u2014this is one that may be less familiar\u2014Psalm 63, verse 3 says: \u201cBut the righteous shall be glad. They shall exult before God. They shall be jubilant with joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a picture of what God\u2014He puts a desire in our hearts for joy; and then He says, \u201cAnd I\u2019ve got it\u2014it\u2019s here.\u201d I don\u2019t know much about hunting, but the salt lick idea\u2014you put salt out there, and the deer lick it, and then they go for water; right? Is that how it works? The idea, I think, is that God has put in our heart\u2014He has salted us for joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen He says: \u201cIt\u2019s here. Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll find fulfillment.\u201d So he puts the desire there to drive us to Himself. Let\u2019s, first of all, define what we\u2019re talking about when we\u2019re talking about joy. Joy is different than\u2014we\u2019ll talk about what it is\u2014but we have to first start by talking about what it\u2019s not. Joy is different than happiness; isn\u2019t it? I mean, that\u2019s pretty simple \/ pretty elementary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard a British gentleman speak one time. He said, in England\u2014in the old days\u2014they used to have an expression where they would say, \u201cMay the haps be with you.\u201d What they were saying was, \u201cMay you have good fortune that would bring you happiness.\u201d He said: \u201cTied to happiness were your circumstances. If your fortunes were good, you would have happiness.\u201d So, \u201cMay the haps be with you,\u201d was a way of saying, \u201cMay stuff go well so that you\u2019ll have happiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went, online, to see if I could find verification for that. What I did find that was interesting is\u2014that the number of people that are using the term \u201chaps\u201d today, just to talk about\u2014as a short-hand for what\u2019s happening in their life\u2014so lots of blogs that are: \u201cHere\u2019s the haps,\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s the haps?\u201d Those are the expressions being used. But happiness is tied to circumstance. If you\u2019re having a good day and things are going well, you\u2019re happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJoy is different\u2014joy is deeper. When we talk about joy, we are talking about a sense of peace and well-being in your soul that results in contentment and may result in some experience of exuberance\u2014not always. When you think of joyful people, you think of somebody jumping, or dancing, or feeling exuberant; but you\u2019ve all experienced that quiet, contented, soul-satisfying joy\u2014that there\u2019s no jumping or dancing going on. There might be in some circumstances; but in others, there\u2019s just a sense of peace and well-being in your soul\u2014a contentedness that is great soul-satisfaction and joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe experienced some of that at Thanksgiving this year. Our whole family flew to Seattle and had a great time celebrating Thanksgiving together, as a family. We went to the Pike Market, near downtown Seattle, and did the shopping around there. We went to see a movie together. We had one night, where we just sat around and we shared memories and talked about family stuff. Mary Ann said, later on, that was probably the highlight of the trip for her\u2014was just sitting around with the family, talking about family and memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I have to tell you\u2014I have been in cities that I think are nicer than Seattle. Seattle\u2019s a nice town, but I\u2019ve been in nicer places. I\u2019ve stayed in nicer hotels than the hotel we stayed in. I\u2019ve eaten better food than what we ate that week, although the food was fine. I\u2019ve had better weather and a better climate than we experienced. I think nice cities, and nice hotels, and nice food, and nice climate are all nice things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we had joy, not because of that stuff\u2014we experienced a taste of joy based on the relationships\u2014not based on our circumstances or our environment. You\u2019ve heard couples\u2014and some of you have said this\u2014I\u2019ve heard couples, who have said: \u201cYou know, back when we first got married, we were so poor we lived in a small apartment. All we had to eat were beanie weenies and all of that.\u201d You know? You get the whole thing; but they say, \u201cThose were some of the happiest times of our lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat are they saying? They\u2019re saying there\u2019s something about joy that transcends your experiences. Now let me just ask you: \u201cWhen I was talking about our family being together, and what we experienced, did some of you resonate with that just a little bit and have just kind of a taste of the joy?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I\u2019m describing it, you\u2019re thinking\u2014there\u2019s this longing in all of our hearts, where we say: \u201cI want that! I crave that.\u201d I mean, you\u2019re glad for me\u2014that we had a taste of it\u2014but you\u2019re also thinking, \u201cWhere do I get some of that?\u201d I think that that longing is in everyone\u2019s heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I\u2019m suggesting this morning is that joy is deeper than happiness. The second thing I want to suggest this morning is that I believe that everybody, in this room, and everybody, in the world, has this deep desire \/ a heart longing to experience joy. I believe that that longing really is what motivates the decision-making of your life on a day-in\/day-out basis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFollow me on this\u2014I believe that your longing for joy is the motivating driver for every choice you make, day in and day out. You\u2019re making decisions that you think\u2014either consciously or subconsciously\u2014that you calculate, \u201cIf I do these things, it will maximize my experience of joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe, not only is the heart longing for joy, fundamentally and primarily\u2014I think it drives everybody\u2019s life. I think the decisions you make are based on, \u201cWill this bring me joy?\u201d When you got up this morning, you got dressed to come to church. Somewhere, in the motivational structure of your life, was this thought, \u201cI will have more joy if I get up this morning, and go and get dressed, and come to church than if I sleep in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know some of you are thinking, \u201cNo, I was actually thinking I\u2019d have more joy if I slept in this morning.\u201d [Laughter] But, really, deep down, whether you\u2019re here out of a sense of longing and desire to be with God\u2019s people and to hear God\u2019s Word preached and you just couldn\u2019t wait to get here and be with everybody else; or whether you\u2019re here because you thought, \u201cWell, I kind of have a duty and a responsibility.\u201d Whatever it was\u2014the calculation in your mind was, \u201cI\u2019ll have more joy at the end of the day if I do that than if I don\u2019t.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you go to work tomorrow, you\u2019ll be going to work because you believe something about going to work will bring more joy than if you don\u2019t go to work tomorrow\u2014whether it\u2019s a paycheck, whether it\u2019s keeping your job, whatever it is. Something\u2019s calculated to say, \u201cI\u2019ll be happier \/ I\u2019ll have more joy, at the end of the day, if I do that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you go out to lunch today and you decide not to have the dessert, there will be something in your motivational structure that says, \u201cI will have more joy if I don\u2019t eat the dessert today than if I do eat the dessert.\u201d Or if you <em>do <\/em>eat the dessert, you\u2019ll think, \u201cI\u2019ll have more joy if I do that!\u201d It\u2019s all based on what\u2019s going to bring the most joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019m suggesting is that every choice you make\u2014everything you do or don\u2019t do\u2014everything you eat or don\u2019t eat\u2014everything you ingest, or smoke, or snort, or don\u2019t ingest, or don\u2019t smoke, or don\u2019t snort\u2014all of that is fueled by a longing for joy. Everyone, on planet earth, is doing whatever we do, at any given moment, because we think, \u201cThat thing will maximize our joy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m also suggesting that it\u2019s God who put that longing in your heart because, as I think we\u2019ll see, God designed it to lead us\u2014not to food, or to friends, or to family\u2014but back to Him. C.S. Lewis said this: \u201cJoy is the serious business of heaven,\u201d\u2014I like that quote. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhich brings me to the third thing I want to talk about\u2014I want to talk about where joy comes from and where it doesn\u2019t come from. When I was a kid\u2014at Christmas, I remember this progression that took place every year in my life. The progression was this\u2014back, right after Thanksgiving, you started making your list of what you wanted for Christmas. That started to maybe generate some longing in your heart for the realization of joy that would come when you got what you wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the things I wanted for Christmas had been not so subtly implanted in my brain from\u00a0 watching cartoons on Saturday mornings; okay? You younger people here need to know that, when your parents were growing up, the only time you could see cartoons was an hour after school and on Saturday morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know, now, you\u2019ve got Cartoon Disney, and Nickelodeon, and the Cartoon Network\u2014you can watch a cartoon any time you want\u2014but in those days, getting up to watch the cartoons on Saturday morning, or watching <em>Huckleberry Hound<\/em>, and <em>Deputy Dog<\/em>, and those guys right after school\u2014<em>Rocky and Bullwinkle<\/em>\u2014right after school\u2014I mean, this was big stuff! And the toymakers knew it. Right before Christmas, they were showing 30 seconds of the flashiest toys\u2014the desire was in your heart to want those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you made out your list \/ you put the toys you wanted on that list. That was the first part of the progression. The <em>longing <\/em>was beginning to evolve in your heart. You put the list together and now, you\u2019ve got weeks to go before Christmas. Every day, the longing intensifies. You think, \u201cShould I look under my parents\u2019 bed?\u201d\u2014right? Or you think, \u201cShould I try to see if I\u2019m going to get it?\u201d You pick up the package and do this\u2014or you try to figure out what it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there\u2019s Christmas morning. On Christmas morning, we got up early. I was always up early. My parents would say, \u201cWe\u2019ll wait \u2018til 8:00 to open the presents.\u201d I said: \u201cNo! You can\u2019t wait \u2018til 8:00.\u201d I wanted to start at <em>5:00<\/em> on Christmas morning; right? Now, that I\u2019m a parent, I understand what a crazy thought that was\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but I wanted to get up and get it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019d go down and you\u2019d get your presents. You\u2019d have to wait patiently until the one that was yours was passed to you. You\u2019d <em>rip <\/em>off the paper and there it is!\u2014the thing you\u2019d been longing, more often than not, the thing that was on your list\u2014that you\u2019d been longing for\u2014is there. There\u2019s this rush\u2014this flood of: \u201cYes!! Joy! I have what is going to bring me great joy and happiness\u2014this toy!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, one year, it was a racetrack that I got. The controllers for the race cars had steering wheels on them. To make the car go around the track, you had to steer the wheel in order to get the car to go around the track. If you were racing with a friend, I mean, it was a real test of skill. It wasn\u2019t just that you had a faster car\u2014you were skillfully driving your car around the track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was excited to get it and I got it. We spent the rest of the morning setting it up, down on a table down in the basement. We got the track all set up and, finally, it\u2019s ready to play\u2014and you can put it on there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMan, oh man, you\u2019re steering! You\u2019ve got the speed on one side \/ you\u2019ve got the steering wheel on the other. It was a test of skill, and I loved it!\u2014for about an hour-and-a-half. And then\u2014what had looked, on the TV, like it was going to be the thing that would make me happy and joyful for so long\u2014started to feel the fade real quick. You started to just drain out and you started to feel\u2014interestingly, you started to feel kind of empty and kind of lonely\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because this thing you thought was going to satisfy\u2014it did for a minute or half a day\u2014and then it just didn\u2019t happen. There were still glimpses\u2014you\u2019d come home from school, a week or two later. You\u2019d go down and play with the car for about 15 or 20 minutes and then get bored with that. A month later, the cars are boxed up in a box somewhere because you need the table for something else and, besides, \u201cYou never play with that thing anyway\u201d; and it\u2019s gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat progression, year in and year out\u2014longing, followed by an experience of joy, followed by loneliness or emptiness\u2014what I experienced on Christmas morning, year after year, I think, becomes the regular rhythm of life for a lot of people. I think this is how many people are living their lives, whether it\u2019s living for the weekend or whether it\u2019s living for the next promotion, or whether it\u2019s living for the next moment or memory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe rhythm of their life is expectation, and longing, fulfillment, and then a sense that: \u201cThat didn\u2019t really satisfy the way I thought it was going to satisfy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re going to cut in here, as we\u2019ve been considering the subject of joy, here on Christmas Day. I almost hate that we have to cut in because what we\u2019re doing here\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really liked your message, Bob! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The rest of the story, which our listeners are going to have to hear tomorrow, really talks about the source of joy\u2014and how you get out of the trap of that experiential, momentary euphoria and get to know real joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!
