The Christmas season can be overwhelming; can\u2019t it? Barbara Rainey remembers, as she was raising her children, all of the expectations she placed on herself\u2014expectations about gift-giving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to the people that delivered our mail. I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to their piano teacher, and the list went on and on. I was imposing a standard on myself\u2014and it was probably all skewed up and all wrong. I was, at some level, looking for affirmation from people; or, at some level, I was probably looking for someone to give me a pat on the back that I was the best mom in the world\u2014I don\u2019t know. So, I\u2019m often my worst enemy. I think a lot of women are like that. We\u2019re often our own worst enemy. We have expectations of ourself that God does not have of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, December 1<sup>st<\/sup>. You know, you get to the end of the Thanksgiving celebration\u2014the weekend is over\u2014and you feel like, [big sigh] \u201cI can take a breath<em>.\u201d<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And then you turn the calendar\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>--<em>and it\u2019s upon you<\/em>\u2014the Christmas rush!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cI can\u2019t stop for anything!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It would be interesting to have a stress meter, especially on young moms who are really trying to make Christmas the holiday of holidays during the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Maybe it\u2019s an Ever Thine Home<em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> product you can create\u2014a stress meter. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Barbara joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> Welcome back to the broadcast, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks. Glad to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This season of the year\u2014Thanksgiving\/Christmas\u2014this is your favorite time of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s also a time of the year that you always dread.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It\u2019s the craziest; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For most moms, they feel a burden during this season to want to pull off a great family holiday thing. That burden can just punch them in the gut; can\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it makes it impossible. It\u2019s truly <em>impossible<\/em> to create the kind of Christmas that can be imagined. Most moms and women imagine creating something that\u2019s truly memorable, and it\u2019s meaningful, and it touches our lives. We get up in the morning\u2014we\u2019re full of energy\u2014we play carols, and we bake cookies, and we take them to our neighbors. We do something for the postman and for all the teachers. We just have a desire to do all of that, and it\u2019s just overwhelming. I ended up, every year, feeling like a failure in so many ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And now you\u2019re blaming Pinterest<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for the whole thing; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I didn\u2019t\u2014I just stop and think, \u201cWhat would it have been like had I had Pinterest?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because I\u2019m thinking it was bad enough with my <em>own<\/em> expectations that I put on myself to make Christmas memorable for my kids and to do all these things that, in my mind, would communicate love to all these people in our lives. If I had had Pinterest, I don\u2019t know what would have happened to me\u2014I would have had a nervous breakdown\u2014I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A million of your closest friends would have taken their images of what they\u2019re doing, and you would have compared what you\u2019re doing unfavorably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, for sure I would have. Of course, I would have because all women do that\u2014we always are comparing our homes, and our kids, and our clothes, and our yards, and our everything with other women. From a distance, we always fall short\u2014so, at Christmas, it\u2019s no different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would have gotten on Pinterest, ostensibly, to look for some really cool ideas because there are recipes, and decorating ideas, and crafts\u2014you name it\u2014it\u2019s on Pinterest. I would have gotten on, looking for those things, thinking, \u201cThis is going to help me,\u201d when, in fact, it probably would have squashed me and killed me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you\u2019ve taken all of your theological background\/your gift in art, and you have designed something else for moms to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the reason\u2014yes, I have. [Laughter] Yes, now that you put it that way. But here\u2019s the deal\u2014I think what we women\u2014because it\u2019s not just young moms \/ because I feel the same thing today, although to a lesser degree, because I don\u2019t have kids\u2014but I think what we women want to do is: We feel a desire, and I think it\u2019s a good desire, to make the holidays\u2014our Christian holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter\u2014to make them meaningful because we <em>know <\/em>that there is great, deep, eternal meaning in the incarnation of Christ and His resurrection at Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, because we <em>know<\/em> that, we think: \u201cOkay, if I bake all these cookies\u2026\u201d or \u201cIf I give all these gifts\u2026\u201d or \u201cIf I decorate my house so that it\u2019s really, really special with lots of lights, it will make it meaningful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, it is different from our everyday, normal routine. But you can\u2019t find meaning in the superficial. I think we get confused, as women, thinking that adding all these things\u2014these exterior things\u2014is going to impart meaning \/ it\u2019s going to make something special. Well, maybe it does make it special, at a certain level; but it doesn\u2019t connect us to the eternal. I think that\u2019s what we\u2019re longing for in our hearts\u2014is to be connected to the eternal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When we were raising our kids, we\u2019d come to this season of the year\u2014and here were the things that we kind of had to juggle\u2014we had family traditions that really had no spiritual significance at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes\u2014but we don\u2019t want to let them go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cWe can\u2019t give up Mom\u2019s cookie recipe or Grandma\u2019s whatever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For us\u2014fajitas on Christmas Eve were a big deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, you get nothing spiritual out of fajitas; but that was important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014now wait a second. [Laughter] That\u2019s an important part of the holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Then we had all of the kids\u2019 school stuff going on\u2014whether it\u2019s a Christmas pageant, or the church cantata, or those things. Then we had all of the business or social\u2014the small group Christmas party, the FamilyLife Christmas party that\u2019s going on, the teen Christmas party\u2014so we had all of that happening. By the time you loaded everything into the schedule, the opportunity to do anything meaningful and spiritual with the family\u2014there was just no time left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not just time\u2014there\u2019s no energy left. There\u2019s no emotional energy or the ability to infuse it with life. I think we get so depleted, emotionally and spiritually, because we\u2019re investing so much in these activities and in these physical manifestations of our celebration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I wish our listeners had some idea of\u2014is the amount of time Barbara has prayed, worked, and labored over these resources to teach your children to make Christ the center of the Christmas holidays\u2014just to see the care she has gone to, not only in the beautiful artistic design, but in the research that is done. Some of our listeners know that a couple years ago you started designing Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> as a way to make the Christmas tree declare Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Adorenaments were the names of Christ. The first year, it was the Christmas names; and then the second year were His royal names. Our listeners have responded. We get comments, all the time, from people coming up, saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve helped us put Christ back into Christmas and have turned our Christmas tree into a tool to declare Christ to our friends, our family members, our neighbors.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this year, you\u2019ve taken it another step further. You\u2019ve created a third set of seven Adorenaments that declare His Savior names. Explain why you chose the Savior names.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, you can\u2019t separate Christmas from Easter because, when Jesus came to earth, He was born to die. We don\u2019t think about that at Christmas\u2014we like the sweet baby in the manger, we like the angels, we like all the things that have been woven into the story that make us feel really good\u2014but we have to remember that He didn\u2019t come just to make us feel good. He came to redeem us, and that redemption meant His life. It meant He had to suffer and die on the cross for us in order to purchase us back to a relationship with Him and the Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, while I was really excited about doing Jesus\u2019 Christmas names, which are the names from Isaiah and the Luke story in Luke\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and while I loved doing His royal names, which are the names etched into crowns like King of kings and Lord of lords and Lion of Judah\u2014there is something about the Savior names that are indispensable in understanding who Christ is. I\u2019m really excited about His Savior names this year because there are seven of His names that represent His salvation work for us. Each one is on a different shape of a cross\u2014so even though we don\u2019t tend to associate the cross with Christmas\u2014they have to go together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as a family, one of the things that you can do to impart that meaning \/ those moments of spiritual depth or discussion in your family is to talk about the names of Christ, during the month of December, as you\u2019re hanging your tree. Or you could read the little book as part of devotions or before school. There are a host of different ways you can do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what women are longing for\u2014in all of the things that they see on Pinterest, and the things that they see in magazines, and that they talk about with their friends\u2014is they want that meaning. They want to put Christ back in Christmas. They just don\u2019t know how to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis talked about the prayer that you put into this and the hours that you\u2019ve worked on this. You really had, as I see it, two objectives in mind. One was that you wanted to give moms and dads something that\u2014as you said, they\u2019re exhausted \/ they\u2019re overwhelmed\u2014this is something that they don\u2019t have to spend a lot of time preparing for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s kind of a turn-key spiritual opportunity for the family that\u2019s already built into activity you\u2019re going to be doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re going to be trimming the Christmas tree\u2014so here\u2019s a way to bring some spiritual sense to what you\u2019re doing. And then you wanted it to be really pretty. You wanted it\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Bob, you know me well, now! Yes, I wanted it to be very pretty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I have to tell you\u2014I have really thought the ornaments in past years were beautiful\u2014these are my favorites\u2014the ones you\u2019ve done this year. You\u2019ve said they\u2019re crosses, but they\u2019re just really elegant-looking. I love what you\u2019ve done with the ornaments in this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, thanks, I appreciate that. I\u2019m encouraged to hear you say that, but I\u2019m hearing that from lots and lots of people. Everyone who sees them says, \u201cThey\u2019re my favorite.\u201d I think it\u2019s because we know and understand that the cross is central to our faith. So, when we see the cross done beautifully, it elevates and adds elegance to the truth of the Scripture. I just think that helps us worship because God is a beautiful God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we should just say\u2014if folks are interested in seeing\u2014because it\u2019s hard to describe these on radio\u2014but folks can go to EverThineHome.com and they can see exactly what we\u2019re talking about. They can see the ornaments and how they\u2019re available. Part of what you\u2019re hoping is\u2014that when they come down from the Christmas tree, they\u2019ll get put back up around the home a few months later; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. We\u2019re actually creating some stands. You can purchase, if you want to, a set of three stands. You can take your favorite three crosses and put them on the stands, and put them on a shelf or on your fireplace mantel, and leave them up all year long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m going to add my voice to both of you and say this is my favorite too. The reason is, they\u2019re not only beautiful, but the names are powerful names. Every time I think about what you\u2019ve done, Sweetheart, I think about\u2014I really do\u2014I think about this a lot\u2014from Philippians 2, it says, \u201cTherefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him\u201d\u2014that\u2019s Jesus\u2014\u201cthe name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>name<\/em> of Jesus is really important\u2014it tells us about the God-Man. It tells us what He came to do. The thing that really is\u2014I just think is really fun about this is\u2014you\u2019ve not just chosen any cross\u2014you\u2019ve chosen seven crosses from distinct periods of history, and many of them are from different continents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>As I started looking at the different kinds of cross shapes, I realized that there are different crosses from different cultures. For instance, one of the crosses that I ended up using is called the Coptic cross. The Coptic cross is and has been used by the Coptic Christians, who live in Egypt, for almost since the time of Christ. It\u2019s been around for centuries, and it has a distinct shape\u2014it\u2019s always been that shape\u2014and that\u2019s a symbol, to them, of their faith in Christ. There\u2019s also the Ethiopian cross, which is also a part of that culture and has been a part of that culture for centuries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was fun to find these different historical crosses because I think it <em>reminds<\/em> us that Christianity is an international faith\u2014it\u2019s not just an American western faith\u2014we get so narrow in our thinking. These crosses open our eyes to see that there are people, all around the world, who believe in Christ and who follow Him. They have different symbols\u2014all forms of the cross\u2014and we can be united around that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the devotional book that comes with the set of seven, not only talks about the name that is on the cross, but it also talks about the design of the cross and gives parents an opportunity, with their kids, to talk about the attributes of Jesus\u2014but also to talk about the universality of the Christian faith\u2014and the fact that we have brothers and sisters who live in Egypt, and who live in Ethiopia, and who live in places, all around the world, and worship the Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. I just think: \u201cWhat a wonderful opportunity for families to be able to talk about these things,\u201d because that\u2019s essentially what I longed for when I was a mom, raising our kids\u2014when Dennis and I were parenting, full-time. I wanted <em>something <\/em>that would help me communicate biblical truth to my kids at Christmas, and I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe read the Luke 2 story. Sometimes, our kids acted it out; but I just wanted more than that. That\u2019s a part of the reason that I\u2019m really excited about this because moms can look at all the things on their list\u2014they can look at the cookies, and the Christmas cards, and the gifts, and all of that stuff\u2014and decide, \u201cWhat is really most important?\u201d If at the top of your list, you say, \u201cTeaching my kids about Christ in the month of December,\u201d some of those other things on your list might have to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the long run, if you teach your kids about Christ at Christmas\u2014if you read the stories of His names\u2014His Savior names, or His Christmas names, or His royal names\u2014you will have done the most important thing in the month of December. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you don\u2019t get the cookies done, no one\u2019s going to remember. If you don\u2019t get that last whatever, nobody\u2019s going to really remember. But your kids might remember some of what they heard about Jesus, and that\u2019s worth more than any of the traditions you\u2019re trying to keep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if you\u2019re sitting down with a young mom, and she\u2019s saying, \u201cI\u2019m already starting to feel overwhelmed by the season,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you would coach her to kind of list the priorities and figure out: \u201cWhat are the essential ones?\u201d and \u201cWhat are the ones you can throw overboard if you need to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s like my friend, Lysa TerKeurst, says in her book, <em>The Best Yes,<\/em> it\u2019s: \u201cWhat is the most important? What are the things that would please God the most?\u201d Learning about Him is going to be the most important thing\u2014that\u2019s going to be the activity or the event that is going to be the most lasting in your family. So, you put those things that are the most important at the top. You make sure those happen, even if some of the other things that you really care about, emotionally\u2014like making Mom\u2019s Christmas cookies or whatever it is that you care about emotionally\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those things you say, \u201cOkay, God, I\u2019m willing to let those go.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But it could be that the kids, in terms of what they\u2019re begging you for, is not \u201cLet\u2019s sit down and do devotions around the names of Jesus.\u201d It\u2019s, \u201cLet\u2019s make the Christmas cookies.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But there are things that moms put on their list that their kids aren\u2019t begging for because, see, one of the things I like so much about Lysa\u2019s book is\u2014she said, \u201cI\u2019m often my own worst enemy.\u201d There were <em>lots<\/em> of things that were on my list that my kids weren\u2019t begging me for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Like what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I mentioned, earlier, taking gifts to all these people. Why I felt like I needed to do that I don\u2019t know, but I wanted to take some kind of meaningful gift to all of my kids\u2019 teachers. We had six\u2014so we had a lot of teachers. I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to the people that delivered our mail. I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to their piano teacher\u2014the list went on and on. I was imposing a standard on myself, and it was probably all skewed up and all wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was, at some level, looking for affirmation from people; or, at some level, I was probably looking for someone to give me a pat on the back that I was the best mom in the world\u2014I don\u2019t know. I just know that I was putting expectations on myself\u2014I was putting them on myself. My husband wasn\u2019t putting them on me. My kids weren\u2019t saying, \u201cOh, Mom, we have to take gifts to all these people.\u201d They were saying, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make Grandma\u2019s cookies,\u201d but they weren\u2019t saying all those other things. So, I\u2019m often my own worst enemy. I think a lot of women are like that\u2014we\u2019re often our own worst enemy. We have expectations of ourself that God does not have of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Today, you just send the kids to school with some ornaments that they\u2019ve gotten\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I would. I would, absolutely I would. I would give them each an ornament. I would buy a set of seven\u2014and I would divide that set up\u2014and I would put it in a card or something. That\u2019s another reason why I have done these ornaments is because they make great gifts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What I would want a mom to hear\u2014in fact, I would charge the moms, who are listening: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou need to decide what really matters and what really counts. It doesn\u2019t matter if it made your kids\u2019 top ten list or not.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you have a sense of wanting to pass on spiritual truth and guide them in making discoveries about Jesus Christ, and helping your husband look good, because what you can do is\u2014give him this book, which is called <em>A Son is Given. <\/em>It has all the information about all seven of the crosses. You can read this in less than five minutes. This is not some lengthy theological education, but you can make a big deal out of these seven this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor those who have the previous two sets of seven\u2014the Christmas names and the royal names\u2014if you wanted to\u2014now again, I\u2019m not trying to heap this on anybody\u2014but if you wanted to, you could take 21 days, throughout the month of December, and begin the process of making your tree declare the One who made Christmas famous and giving your kids an introduction to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve actually had kids come to faith in Christ through the discussion that occurs around what these Adorenaments mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>If you do have the previous sets, and you have read the book to your children, chances are they\u2019re not going to remember a tenth of it. So, you might as well read it again. Then that rereading every year can become a new tradition that\u2019s a very meaningful tradition\u2014that <em>will<\/em> make a lasting impact on your kids\u2019 lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When we celebrate the names of Christ, increasingly, as I grow older, His name is above every name, and His name will be the name that causes every knee to bow. So, why not go ahead and introduce your kids to Christ? Glad to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This season of the year\u2014Thanksgiving\/Christmas\u2014this is your favorite time of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s also a time of the year that you always dread.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It\u2019s the craziest; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For most moms, they feel a burden during this season to want to pull off a great family holiday thing. That burden can just punch them in the gut; can\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it makes it impossible. It\u2019s truly <em>impossible<\/em> to create the kind of Christmas that can be imagined. Most moms and women imagine creating something that\u2019s truly memorable, and it\u2019s meaningful, and it touches our lives. We get up in the morning\u2014we\u2019re full of energy\u2014we play carols, and we bake cookies, and we take them to our neighbors. We do something for the postman and for all the teachers. We just have a desire to do all of that, and it\u2019s just overwhelming. I ended up, every year, feeling like a failure in so many ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And now you\u2019re blaming Pinterest<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for the whole thing; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I didn\u2019t\u2014I just stop and think, \u201cWhat would it have been like had I had Pinterest?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because I\u2019m thinking it was bad enough with my <em>own<\/em> expectations that I put on myself to make Christmas memorable for my kids and to do all these things that, in my mind, would communicate love to all these people in our lives. If I had had Pinterest, I don\u2019t know what would have happened to me\u2014I would have had a nervous breakdown\u2014I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A million of your closest friends would have taken their images of what they\u2019re doing, and you would have compared what you\u2019re doing unfavorably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, for sure I would have. Of course, I would have because all women do that\u2014we always are comparing our homes, and our kids, and our clothes, and our yards, and our everything with other women. From a distance, we always fall short\u2014so, at Christmas, it\u2019s no different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would have gotten on Pinterest, ostensibly, to look for some really cool ideas because there are recipes, and decorating ideas, and crafts\u2014you name it\u2014it\u2019s on Pinterest. I would have gotten on, looking for those things, thinking, \u201cThis is going to help me,\u201d when, in fact, it probably would have squashed me and killed me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you\u2019ve taken all of your theological background\/your gift in art, and you have designed something else for moms to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the reason\u2014yes, I have. [Laughter] Yes, now that you put it that way. But here\u2019s the deal\u2014I think what we women\u2014because it\u2019s not just young moms \/ because I feel the same thing today, although to a lesser degree, because I don\u2019t have kids\u2014but I think what we women want to do is: We feel a desire, and I think it\u2019s a good desire, to make the holidays\u2014our Christian holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter\u2014to make them meaningful because we <em>know <\/em>that there is great, deep, eternal meaning in the incarnation of Christ and His resurrection at Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, because we <em>know<\/em> that, we think: \u201cOkay, if I bake all these cookies\u2026\u201d or \u201cIf I give all these gifts\u2026\u201d or \u201cIf I decorate my house so that it\u2019s really, really special with lots of lights, it will make it meaningful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, it is different from our everyday, normal routine. But you can\u2019t find meaning in the superficial. I think we get confused, as women, thinking that adding all these things\u2014these exterior things\u2014is going to impart meaning \/ it\u2019s going to make something special. Well, maybe it does make it special, at a certain level; but it doesn\u2019t connect us to the eternal. I think that\u2019s what we\u2019re longing for in our hearts\u2014is to be connected to the eternal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When we were raising our kids, we\u2019d come to this season of the year\u2014and here were the things that we kind of had to juggle\u2014we had family traditions that really had no spiritual significance at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes\u2014but we don\u2019t want to let them go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cWe can\u2019t give up Mom\u2019s cookie recipe or Grandma\u2019s whatever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For us\u2014fajitas on Christmas Eve were a big deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, you get nothing spiritual out of fajitas; but that was important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014now wait a second. [Laughter] That\u2019s an important part of the holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Then we had all of the kids\u2019 school stuff going on\u2014whether it\u2019s a Christmas pageant, or the church cantata, or those things. Then we had all of the business or social\u2014the small group Christmas party, the FamilyLife Christmas party that\u2019s going on, the teen Christmas party\u2014so we had all of that happening. By the time you loaded everything into the schedule, the opportunity to do anything meaningful and spiritual with the family\u2014there was just no time left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not just time\u2014there\u2019s no energy left. There\u2019s no emotional energy or the ability to infuse it with life. I think we get so depleted, emotionally and spiritually, because we\u2019re investing so much in these activities and in these physical manifestations of our celebration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I wish our listeners had some idea of\u2014is the amount of time Barbara has prayed, worked, and labored over these resources to teach your children to make Christ the center of the Christmas holidays\u2014just to see the care she has gone to, not only in the beautiful artistic design, but in the research that is done. Some of our listeners know that a couple years ago you started designing Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> as a way to make the Christmas tree declare Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Adorenaments were the names of Christ. The first year, it was the Christmas names; and then the second year were His royal names. Our listeners have responded. We get comments, all the time, from people coming up, saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve helped us put Christ back into Christmas and have turned our Christmas tree into a tool to declare Christ to our friends, our family members, our neighbors.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this year, you\u2019ve taken it another step further. You\u2019ve created a third set of seven Adorenaments that declare His Savior names. Explain why you chose the Savior names.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, you can\u2019t separate Christmas from Easter because, when Jesus came to earth, He was born to die. We don\u2019t think about that at Christmas\u2014we like the sweet baby in the manger, we like the angels, we like all the things that have been woven into the story that make us feel really good\u2014but we have to remember that He didn\u2019t come just to make us feel good. He came to redeem us, and that redemption meant His life. It meant He had to suffer and die on the cross for us in order to purchase us back to a relationship with Him and the Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, while I was really excited about doing Jesus\u2019 Christmas names, which are the names from Isaiah and the Luke story in Luke\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and while I loved doing His royal names, which are the names etched into crowns like King of kings and Lord of lords and Lion of Judah\u2014there is something about the Savior names that are indispensable in understanding who Christ is. I\u2019m really excited about His Savior names this year because there are seven of His names that represent His salvation work for us. Each one is on a different shape of a cross\u2014so even though we don\u2019t tend to associate the cross with Christmas\u2014they have to go together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as a family, one of the things that you can do to impart that meaning \/ those moments of spiritual depth or discussion in your family is to talk about the names of Christ, during the month of December, as you\u2019re hanging your tree. Or you could read the little book as part of devotions or before school. There are a host of different ways you can do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what women are longing for\u2014in all of the things that they see on Pinterest, and the things that they see in magazines, and that they talk about with their friends\u2014is they want that meaning. They want to put Christ back in Christmas. They just don\u2019t know how to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis talked about the prayer that you put into this and the hours that you\u2019ve worked on this. You really had, as I see it, two objectives in mind. One was that you wanted to give moms and dads something that\u2014as you said, they\u2019re exhausted \/ they\u2019re overwhelmed\u2014this is something that they don\u2019t have to spend a lot of time preparing for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s kind of a turn-key spiritual opportunity for the family that\u2019s already built into activity you\u2019re going to be doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re going to be trimming the Christmas tree\u2014so here\u2019s a way to bring some spiritual sense to what you\u2019re doing. And then you wanted it to be really pretty. You wanted it\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Bob, you know me well, now! Yes, I wanted it to be very pretty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I have to tell you\u2014I have really thought the ornaments in past years were beautiful\u2014these are my favorites\u2014the ones you\u2019ve done this year. You\u2019ve said they\u2019re crosses, but they\u2019re just really elegant-looking. I love what you\u2019ve done with the ornaments in this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, thanks, I appreciate that. I\u2019m encouraged to hear you say that, but I\u2019m hearing that from lots and lots of people. Everyone who sees them says, \u201cThey\u2019re my favorite.\u201d I think it\u2019s because we know and understand that the cross is central to our faith. So, when we see the cross done beautifully, it elevates and adds elegance to the truth of the Scripture. I just think that helps us worship because God is a beautiful God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we should just say\u2014if folks are interested in seeing\u2014because it\u2019s hard to describe these on radio\u2014but folks can go to EverThineHome.com and they can see exactly what we\u2019re talking about. They can see the ornaments and how they\u2019re available. Part of what you\u2019re hoping is\u2014that when they come down from the Christmas tree, they\u2019ll get put back up around the home a few months later; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. We\u2019re actually creating some stands. You can purchase, if you want to, a set of three stands. You can take your favorite three crosses and put them on the stands, and put them on a shelf or on your fireplace mantel, and leave them up all year long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m going to add my voice to both of you and say this is my favorite too. The reason is, they\u2019re not only beautiful, but the names are powerful names. Every time I think about what you\u2019ve done, Sweetheart, I think about\u2014I really do\u2014I think about this a lot\u2014from Philippians 2, it says, \u201cTherefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him\u201d\u2014that\u2019s Jesus\u2014\u201cthe name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>name<\/em> of Jesus is really important\u2014it tells us about the God-Man. It tells us what He came to do. The thing that really is\u2014I just think is really fun about this is\u2014you\u2019ve not just chosen any cross\u2014you\u2019ve chosen seven crosses from distinct periods of history, and many of them are from different continents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>As I started looking at the different kinds of cross shapes, I realized that there are different crosses from different cultures. For instance, one of the crosses that I ended up using is called the Coptic cross. The Coptic cross is and has been used by the Coptic Christians, who live in Egypt, for almost since the time of Christ. It\u2019s been around for centuries, and it has a distinct shape\u2014it\u2019s always been that shape\u2014and that\u2019s a symbol, to them, of their faith in Christ. There\u2019s also the Ethiopian cross, which is also a part of that culture and has been a part of that culture for centuries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was fun to find these different historical crosses because I think it <em>reminds<\/em> us that Christianity is an international faith\u2014it\u2019s not just an American western faith\u2014we get so narrow in our thinking. These crosses open our eyes to see that there are people, all around the world, who believe in Christ and who follow Him. They have different symbols\u2014all forms of the cross\u2014and we can be united around that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the devotional book that comes with the set of seven, not only talks about the name that is on the cross, but it also talks about the design of the cross and gives parents an opportunity, with their kids, to talk about the attributes of Jesus\u2014but also to talk about the universality of the Christian faith\u2014and the fact that we have brothers and sisters who live in Egypt, and who live in Ethiopia, and who live in places, all around the world, and worship the Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. I just think: \u201cWhat a wonderful opportunity for families to be able to talk about these things,\u201d because that\u2019s essentially what I longed for when I was a mom, raising our kids\u2014when Dennis and I were parenting, full-time. I wanted <em>something <\/em>that would help me communicate biblical truth to my kids at Christmas, and I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe read the Luke 2 story. Sometimes, our kids acted it out; but I just wanted more than that. That\u2019s a part of the reason that I\u2019m really excited about this because moms can look at all the things on their list\u2014they can look at the cookies, and the Christmas cards, and the gifts, and all of that stuff\u2014and decide, \u201cWhat is really most important?\u201d If at the top of your list, you say, \u201cTeaching my kids about Christ in the month of December,\u201d some of those other things on your list might have to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the long run, if you teach your kids about Christ at Christmas\u2014if you read the stories of His names\u2014His Savior names, or His Christmas names, or His royal names\u2014you will have done the most important thing in the month of December. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you don\u2019t get the cookies done, no one\u2019s going to remember. If you don\u2019t get that last whatever, nobody\u2019s going to really remember. But your kids might remember some of what they heard about Jesus, and that\u2019s worth more than any of the traditions you\u2019re trying to keep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if you\u2019re sitting down with a young mom, and she\u2019s saying, \u201cI\u2019m already starting to feel overwhelmed by the season,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you would coach her to kind of list the priorities and figure out: \u201cWhat are the essential ones?\u201d and \u201cWhat are the ones you can throw overboard if you need to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s like my friend, Lysa TerKeurst, says in her book, <em>The Best Yes,<\/em> it\u2019s: \u201cWhat is the most important? What are the things that would please God the most?\u201d Learning about Him is going to be the most important thing\u2014that\u2019s going to be the activity or the event that is going to be the most lasting in your family. So, you put those things that are the most important at the top. You make sure those happen, even if some of the other things that you really care about, emotionally\u2014like making Mom\u2019s Christmas cookies or whatever it is that you care about emotionally\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those things you say, \u201cOkay, God, I\u2019m willing to let those go.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But it could be that the kids, in terms of what they\u2019re begging you for, is not \u201cLet\u2019s sit down and do devotions around the names of Jesus.\u201d It\u2019s, \u201cLet\u2019s make the Christmas cookies.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But there are things that moms put on their list that their kids aren\u2019t begging for because, see, one of the things I like so much about Lysa\u2019s book is\u2014she said, \u201cI\u2019m often my own worst enemy.\u201d There were <em>lots<\/em> of things that were on my list that my kids weren\u2019t begging me for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Like what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I mentioned, earlier, taking gifts to all these people. Why I felt like I needed to do that I don\u2019t know, but I wanted to take some kind of meaningful gift to all of my kids\u2019 teachers. We had six\u2014so we had a lot of teachers. I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to the people that delivered our mail. I wanted to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to their piano teacher\u2014the list went on and on. I was imposing a standard on myself, and it was probably all skewed up and all wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was, at some level, looking for affirmation from people; or, at some level, I was probably looking for someone to give me a pat on the back that I was the best mom in the world\u2014I don\u2019t know. I just know that I was putting expectations on myself\u2014I was putting them on myself. My husband wasn\u2019t putting them on me. My kids weren\u2019t saying, \u201cOh, Mom, we have to take gifts to all these people.\u201d They were saying, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make Grandma\u2019s cookies,\u201d but they weren\u2019t saying all those other things. So, I\u2019m often my own worst enemy. I think a lot of women are like that\u2014we\u2019re often our own worst enemy. We have expectations of ourself that God does not have of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Today, you just send the kids to school with some ornaments that they\u2019ve gotten\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I would. I would, absolutely I would. I would give them each an ornament. I would buy a set of seven\u2014and I would divide that set up\u2014and I would put it in a card or something. That\u2019s another reason why I have done these ornaments is because they make great gifts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What I would want a mom to hear\u2014in fact, I would charge the moms, who are listening: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou need to decide what really matters and what really counts. It doesn\u2019t matter if it made your kids\u2019 top ten list or not.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you have a sense of wanting to pass on spiritual truth and guide them in making discoveries about Jesus Christ, and helping your husband look good, because what you can do is\u2014give him this book, which is called <em>A Son is Given. <\/em>It has all the information about all seven of the crosses. You can read this in less than five minutes. This is not some lengthy theological education, but you can make a big deal out of these seven this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor those who have the previous two sets of seven\u2014the Christmas names and the royal names\u2014if you wanted to\u2014now again, I\u2019m not trying to heap this on anybody\u2014but if you wanted to, you could take 21 days, throughout the month of December, and begin the process of making your tree declare the One who made Christmas famous and giving your kids an introduction to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve actually had kids come to faith in Christ through the discussion that occurs around what these Adorenaments mean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>If you do have the previous sets, and you have read the book to your children, chances are they\u2019re not going to remember a tenth of it. So, you might as well read it again. Then that rereading every year can become a new tradition that\u2019s a very meaningful tradition\u2014that <em>will<\/em> make a lasting impact on your kids\u2019 lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When we celebrate the names of Christ, increasingly, as I grow older, His name is above every name, and His name will be the name that causes every knee to bow. So, why not go ahead and introduce your kids to Christ?
