I like sports\u2014I enjoy a lot of the same media that young men my age enjoy. I like ESPN and these sorts of things. But so much of the encouragement to young men, like me, is to not build a family. It\u2019s to goof off for as long as you can\u2014avoid responsibility for as long as you can\u2014and then maybe, eventually, down the line, have a family. Thanks for joining us. So, do you describe yourself as a risk-taker? Do you think of yourself that way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do. I really do. In fact, I\u2019m thinking back to what we did back last summer\u2014in dusting off an event we used to hold back in the early 2000s\u2014<em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because we felt like it was worth the risk to stand up on behalf of marriage and just go back to the book of Genesis, the book of beginnings, and state the truth about marriage\u2014that it\u2019s between a man and a woman for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think just starting radio, 22 years ago, was kind of taking a risk; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, it was. We were enjoying\u2014Barbara and I\u2014anonymity of occasionally speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoing radio meant you had to become more public. I have to say it really represented a death to self, which is really what Christianity ought to be all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But when I think about risk-taking, I\u2019m just thinking about the 30-foot bluffs that you jump off of into the lake or the sky-diving. Are you that kind of risk-taker?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been known to do some of those, but I don\u2019t really care for the big heights. We have a guest with us today who is the main man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The main man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The main man\u2014He grew up in Maine. [Laughter] Owen Strachan joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve had somebody, who grew up in New England, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome to the broadcast!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Thank you. I\u2019m so glad to be here and to rectify that error. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. Owen is a professor at Boyce College and also at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, which is that other seminary that operates in the country along with Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s how you refer to it\u2014\u201cother\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has been married to Bethany for eight years; is that right?\u2014three children and doesn\u2019t have a fourth one on the way, as far as we know. We had an off [Laughter]\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should explain\u2014just before we came on the air here, Dennis says to Owen, \u201cOh, we just called your wife, and you\u2019re expecting number four.\u201d It was a great\u2014that classic look from Owen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was a great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were stunned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was a great moment. Owen has written a book about risk, though\u2014it\u2019s called <em>The Risky Gospel<\/em>. It actually begins on the coast of Maine, where you were standing on a ledge with some buddies\u2014about to jump in the ocean. I was all set for it to be the reason you didn\u2019t jump is because: \u201cWho in their right mind would jump into that icy water out there?\u201d But that wasn\u2019t the issue; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That was not the issue. I grew up swimming in the Atlantic Ocean\u2014so I\u2019m tough in that way, I guess. Perhaps, that\u2019s the only way I\u2019m tough. Yes, I was standing there. It was in high school, and it was the classic kind of prove-your-manhood moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had trembling legs, quivering hands, and I ultimately did not jump. I was afraid\u2014I didn\u2019t want to take the risk. I wanted to, but I just couldn\u2019t make myself do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes, other guys did\u2014other guys jumped. They were egging me on: \u201cCome on! Do it!\u201d Listen, I wasn\u2019t\u2014here I am, on national radio, making myself out to be some weakling, \u201cThis is really scary\u201d; but I love sports. I played sports\u2014I had injuries. I was a guy\u2014young guy\u2014so all the typical trappings of young manhood were a part of my life; but, in this particular moment, the guys were saying: \u201cCome on! Jump!\u201d and I just couldn\u2019t do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m with you\u2014I get it. I look down there and go: \u201cNo. Idiots jump. I\u2019m staying right up here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do the bungee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No-o-o. No, no, no. Jump into\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Skydiving? You wouldn\u2019t do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No\u2014probably not. I\u2019m not going to do anything that involves falling long distances. I don\u2019t see any sense in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, Owen. Why is it that for many who profess to be followers of Christ, we end up being more controlled by fear than by faith? Why? Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Great question. Well, I think it\u2019s naturally a part of our sinful makeup to be fearful of the wrong things. There is appropriate fear in life, actually\u2014we should fear God in one, as Christians\u2014so we want to cultivate that in a sense. That\u2019s another kind of topic to talk about. But, fundamentally, we are afraid of risks in life. Especially, in a spiritual sense, we want to win the popularity contest. We want an easy, quiet, nice, safe life; and that is <em>not<\/em>\u2014here\u2019s the news flash\u2014that is <em>not<\/em> what Jesus promises us in Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s been interesting to me to watch over the last couple of years books come out like <em>Crazy Love <\/em>by Francis Chan, <em>Radical <\/em>by David Platt\u2014there is something resident in the heart of a follower of Christ to say, \u201cI do want my faith to be something more than just a play-it-safe faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the day to day of life presses me back into play-it-safe mode. I\u2019m not thinking about needing to go out and conquer the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking about the little risks that God\u2019s asking us to take every day in relationships \/ the risks he\u2019s asking us to take in the choices that we make. That\u2019s the kind of risky faith you\u2019re calling people to; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. I think that <em>Radical, Crazy Love<\/em>, and other books in that vein\u2014in this kind of bigger gospel \/ big God vein\u2014have done a great service to the church. I\u2019m very thankful for them, but what I want to do is re-enchant ordinary Christian living. I want more people to go to Africa \/ I want more people to go to the 10\/40 Window and be missionaries behind the enemy lines, so to speak\u2014we need that\u2014we desperately need that. I hope people will listen to this broadcast and do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we also need to give so-called ordinary Christians\u2014and I would put myself in that category \/ I\u2019m not in Africa or the 10\/40 Window\u2014we need to help them see the glory of everyday Christian living. If you wake up in the suburbs, and drive your car into work, and you work eight to five and come back home\u2014you, too, can lead a big God-glorifying, risk-driven life. That\u2019s not closed off from you. I think people respond to that message when they hear it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say in the book that one of the reasons why we\u2019re not living with risky faith is we\u2019ve stopped living aggressively for the Lord. So, what does that look like in the normal Christian life? You live in Louisville \/ I live in Little Rock. What does somebody living aggressively for the Lord\u2014who\u2019s going to his job, and going to church, and taking the kids to softball or football\u2014what does aggressive living for the Lord look like as compared to generic Christian living?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Fundamentally, it\u2019s grounded in this conviction that I have not been called by Jesus into a way of life that\u2019s supposed to be safe, and neat, and clean. I have been called on this glorious gospel-driven adventure with Jesus Christ, who slayed death and rose from the grave, to give me life, and give me purpose and hope. Now, I\u2019m on mission for Him\u2014I\u2019m doing that whether I\u2019m a pastor, whether I\u2019m a missionary, whether I\u2019m a plumber, a homemaker, professor, teacher, whatever I may be \/ businessman\u2014 and I am going after God\u2019s glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI recognize, furthermore, that, in Genesis 1:27, humanity was given the call to take dominion of all the earth. Now, I\u2019m interpreting that through a Jesus-centered, Jesus-focused lens. So, I\u2019m saying, \u201cHow can I\u2014with my particular gifts and abilities \/ with the particular sphere of life into which God has placed me\u2014how can I give God glory right here and now?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not supposed to look at Billy Graham, and Tim Keller, John Piper\u2014whoever your favorite preacher is\u2014and say: \u201cOh, wow! I\u2019m so thankful that they\u2019re giving God glory and taking dominion. I\u2019m just over here, on the sidelines, cheering them on.\u201d Well, many of us are cheering them on; but we are in the game too\u2014every last one of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe kind of Christian life that is <em>not <\/em>exhibiting that kind of faith is a Christianity that isn\u2019t focused on God\u2019s glory. You go through the motions\u2014you show up at work \/ you\u2019re hanging around your kids\u2014but you\u2019re not really investing in them. You go to church\u2014you listen a little bit, every now and then \/ your mind is drifting to the lake and wave runners\u2014but you\u2019re not really plugged in. You\u2019re not really serving \/ not really a witness in your community in any meaningful way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, no expectations from me, Owen Strachan, that you\u2019re going to be this evangelistic dynamo; but you\u2019re not even really caring about your neighbors. Whereas, the person, who is after God\u2019s glory in all of those spheres, is doing everything they can. They\u2019re praying hard that God will bless them and use them\u2014put them to use in taking dominion of all their life for Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I hear you saying\u2014we talk at our church about people drinking in and pouring out. I hear you saying if all you\u2019re doing is drinking in, you\u2019re not living the engaged risky gospel life. The pouring out part\u2014you have to be figuring out: \u201cWhat does pouring out look like in my life?\u201d and \u201cHow do I engage that pattern\/that practice?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is a great illustration over in Israel of this\u2014it\u2019s called the Dead Sea. The Jordan River comes into it, and it stops right there. They actually mine that sea today because it\u2019s full of all kinds of deposits of minerals today. Our lives were not intended to be a dead end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>To be a swamp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People who take in spiritual food\/spiritual drink over, and over, and over again\u2014I\u2019m afraid we become obese. God made us to have tension against the muscle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI compare faith to a muscle. If you don\u2019t use it, you\u2019re going to lose it. Faith was given to us by God as a gift to be able to exercise it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can tell you\u2014today, my faith is stronger today than it was back then because I\u2019ve used it. Now, have I failed in doing that?\u2014over, and over, and over again. I\u2019ve caved into fear\u2014I\u2019ve moved into the camp of the doubting Thomases. Who doesn\u2019t; okay? But you get back up again; and you step out in faith, once again, where you\u2019re living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s an illustration in your life, Owen, where you have faced\u2014maybe it\u2019s back to Bob\u2019s question\u2014more of the everyday run-of-the-mill vanilla stuff that all of us face every day\u2014but it was disguised a bit\u2014but, ultimately, it was a step of faith that was required by God of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Well, we were joking about this announcement of a fourth child on the way for the Strachans, which you guys harassed me with earlier\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s a good thing there\u2019s no in-studio cam there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That would have taken the Strachans by surprise. We would have given God much glory in that, of course; but anyway\u2014listen\u2014I\u2019m a young man today. All the cultural pressure is toward being a goofball. I like sports. I enjoy a lot of the same media that young men my age enjoy. I like ESPN and these sorts of things. But so much of the encouragement to young men, like me, is to not build a family. It\u2019s to goof off for as long as you can\u2014avoid responsibility for as long as you can\u2014and then maybe, eventually, down the line, have a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can say, when I was in my mid-young 20s, I heard this call first from Dr. Al Mohler, who I know is a friend of this ministry. He was challenging young men on my seminary campus to go and build a family: \u201cDo something awesome. Build a family\u2014it\u2019s something that lasts for the rest of your lifetime, Lord willing.\u201d I can say that I have felt, since then, that this is a scary undertaking in certain ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a sacrificial undertaking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>\u2014and that is <em>against<\/em> the spirit of the age. Young men today are not being encouraged to be <em>sacrificial <\/em>in their lives. So, it\u2019s been hard at different points\u2014it\u2019s hard when I come home. I can fully understand what other young fathers feel\u2014or older fathers feel\u2014when they come home from a long day at work. What you want to do is put up your feet, turn on ESPN or whatever else, pick up the paper\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014and you want to tune out \/ you want to rest. Instead, you have\u2014I have three little children who come home and pounce on me, and are so eager to see Dad, and play, and spend time with me. I need to invest. That is just as hard for me, a seminary and college professor teaching theology, as it is for any man\u2014but that is my call\u2014to <em>risk<\/em> my comfort and get active.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have three sons, who have been grafted into my family\u2014they got my daughters; okay?\u2014alright? And there\u2019s a story about one of them\u2014that he won\u2019t mind \/ \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll keep him unnamed. It\u2019s a great story because, when he was dating my daughter, at a point, we were having a good healthy conversation. He said: \u201cYou know, I think I\u2019ll just keep on having a good time with the guys. We\u2019ll camp out down by the fire, sit down\u2014you know, have some fun\u2014go fishing ,\u00a0 swimming down by the lake, and\u2026\u201d I said, \u201cYou know, all that\u2019s good \/ I understand that. I hear that call today; but,\u201d I said, \u201cyou know, if my daughter is the one for you, there\u2019s going to be a D-Day\u2014and it\u2019s not invasion.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s not a Dennis Day; is it? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, it\u2019s not a Dennis Day. It may demand a Dennis Day, though, \u201cBut there\u2019s going to be a D-Day that demands you to go, \u2018You know, that really looks like a waste of time compared to what God\u2019s got in real life in taking a bride\/taking responsibility.\u2019\u201d It was interesting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I gave him my daughter\u2019s hand in marriage, I kind of looked at him and winked. I said, \u201cYou know, there really is something better than going down by the lake, building a bonfire, and sitting by the guys; isn\u2019t there?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think there is some inertia in the lives of guys to just want to\u2014we\u2019re talking about guys here because we are guys. This is probably true for everybody who is listening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014inertia to just relax, or check out, or rest or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you, Bob. It\u2019s back to fear again. Owen\u2019s book has a subtitle: <em>Abandon Fear and Build Something Awesome.<\/em> It sounds like an advertisement for Home Depot<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; okay? But it\u2019s real life! If you\u2019re going to accomplish something with your life, you will have to face down fear. There\u2019s a reason why the David and Goliath story has been popularized today by Malcolm Gladwell. He wrote <em>The Tipping Point.<\/em> He spotted a cultural trend\u2014I think he\u2019s onto something big here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re a generation that is more into our fear and playing it safe than we are into stepping out in faith, and trusting God, and try to do something\u2014what you said here\u2014build something awesome. A marriage and a family are just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes. And listen, this is going to affect all of us. This is not a guy problem alone\u2014this is a generational problem, like you just said. All around us are meta-narratives or big stories that people want to get swept up into. You turn on the TV\u2014you see romantic comedies, you see Jane Austen\u2019s fiction, or something like this. You see the ESPN stuff. You see movies, where there are superheroes conquering the world. Okay, all around us are these grand stories and people are getting swept up into them. Or if people are falling prey to sexual temptation and lust, that\u2019s a grand story too; right?\u2014\u201cI can conquer the world. I can prove my prowess.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristianity needs to not be this kind of padded room that you enter if you trust Jesus, where everything is soft, and safe, and easy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristianity\u2014for guy or girl \/ young or old\u2014needs to be about going on mission with Jesus. Let me give just one example. A young woman today can either play it safe and lead a cultural life\u2014let\u2019s say a young guy hasn\u2019t stepped up to the plate to ask her for her hand. She can build a career that glorifies the Lord. Perhaps, there\u2019s a social justice cause out there that she can apply the gospel to. Perhaps, she\u2019s the next one who is supposed to take on abortion, and be the William Wilberforce of this generation, and shut it down through different means. There is <em>no limit<\/em> to what God can do through us, but we are limiting ourselves through this kind of \u201cbest life now\u201d theology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it may be that she\u2019s investing in her workplace\/in the job. Let\u2019s say she\u2019s a doctor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She\u2019s saying: \u201cOkay, this is where I can focus. This is how I can advance the cause of Christ,\u201d rather than thinking, \u201cI show up, punch the clock, get my paycheck, and then I\u2019ll go to church and do my two hours there\u201d; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re talking about asking the question in every aspect of life, \u201cHow can I make the Kingdom the priority and get in the game?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. Let me give you an example of this\u2014a story from my own life, quickly. I\u2019ve been pro-life for many years. I know this isn\u2019t a show about pro-life or something, but here\u2019s an example. But I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> thought of myself as somebody who would ever go to an abortion clinic and do anything; okay? I have no training \/ I have no background in that\u2014ardently\/passionately pro-life\u2014but I finally, a couple of years ago, decided to go to Market Street in Louisville, Kentucky, and go to the one abortion clinic in town. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that there were some folks from area churches who went down. They didn\u2019t shout at people \/ they didn\u2019t\u2014most of them\u2014hold up signs or something. They tried to counsel women, through the gospel, to not have abortions\u2014to not have abortions and then come to church to be saved. I got involved in that ministry. I didn\u2019t set new standards for any kind of success or something, but that was a risk that I think the Lord called me to take and gave me the grace to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we\u2019ve underscored the need for us to face down our fears in the small issues\/the big issues. For some, who are listening right now, the step of faith may involve a relationship that\u2019s not right. Maybe, it\u2019s one where you need to ask, in faith, for forgiveness. Maybe, it\u2019s one where you need to respond, in faith, with forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Maybe, it\u2019s a person you need to go to and confront\u2014and call them out of some wrong behavior \/ something they\u2019re about to do that\u2019s tragic\u2014that they need a voice from the outside to step into their lives and say: \u201cDon\u2019t do this! I love you, but don\u2019t do this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt also may be something\u2014and Owen, I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re aware of <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>and <em>Stepping Up<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>\u2014but they\u2019re video series that we designed to put in the hands of laymen and women to make a difference in their neighborhoods, their churches, their businesses, their community\u2014and to, frankly, push back against the forces that are seeking to destroy marriage and family today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and to take a positive stand, and to equip people to make their marriage and family go the distance \/ to equip men to know what it looks like to be a man today in the culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It may be there are some listeners, right now, who are listening to our broadcast\u2014and they\u2019ve heard us talk about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\/<em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014and they\u2019ve just been afraid. It\u2019s bigger than any organization to address. It\u2019s the body of Christ\u2014it is the church, ultimately, in action\u2014where they live, making a difference, and pushing back and doing something on behalf of the gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think the question is: \u201cWhen was the last time you took a risk? When was the last time you said, \u2018I\u2019m going to step out in faith\u2014I\u2019m going to take some risk, but I care more about God\u2019s agenda than I do about my own comfort or my own reputation.\u2019?\u201d That\u2019s really what is at the heart of what you\u2019ve written in your book, <em>Risky Gospel,<\/em> calling us to step away from comfort, and ease, and false security; and instead, step into the mission that God has for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have copies of Owen\u2019s book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. Thanks for joining us. So, do you describe yourself as a risk-taker? Do you think of yourself that way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do. I really do. In fact, I\u2019m thinking back to what we did back last summer\u2014in dusting off an event we used to hold back in the early 2000s\u2014<em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because we felt like it was worth the risk to stand up on behalf of marriage and just go back to the book of Genesis, the book of beginnings, and state the truth about marriage\u2014that it\u2019s between a man and a woman for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think just starting radio, 22 years ago, was kind of taking a risk; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, it was. We were enjoying\u2014Barbara and I\u2014anonymity of occasionally speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoing radio meant you had to become more public. I have to say it really represented a death to self, which is really what Christianity ought to be all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But when I think about risk-taking, I\u2019m just thinking about the 30-foot bluffs that you jump off of into the lake or the sky-diving. Are you that kind of risk-taker?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been known to do some of those, but I don\u2019t really care for the big heights. We have a guest with us today who is the main man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The main man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The main man\u2014He grew up in Maine. [Laughter] Owen Strachan joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve had somebody, who grew up in New England, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome to the broadcast!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Thank you. I\u2019m so glad to be here and to rectify that error. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. Owen is a professor at Boyce College and also at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, which is that other seminary that operates in the country along with Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s how you refer to it\u2014\u201cother\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has been married to Bethany for eight years; is that right?\u2014three children and doesn\u2019t have a fourth one on the way, as far as we know. We had an off [Laughter]\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should explain\u2014just before we came on the air here, Dennis says to Owen, \u201cOh, we just called your wife, and you\u2019re expecting number four.\u201d It was a great\u2014that classic look from Owen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was a great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were stunned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was a great moment. Owen has written a book about risk, though\u2014it\u2019s called <em>The Risky Gospel<\/em>. It actually begins on the coast of Maine, where you were standing on a ledge with some buddies\u2014about to jump in the ocean. I was all set for it to be the reason you didn\u2019t jump is because: \u201cWho in their right mind would jump into that icy water out there?\u201d But that wasn\u2019t the issue; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That was not the issue. I grew up swimming in the Atlantic Ocean\u2014so I\u2019m tough in that way, I guess. Perhaps, that\u2019s the only way I\u2019m tough. Yes, I was standing there. It was in high school, and it was the classic kind of prove-your-manhood moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had trembling legs, quivering hands, and I ultimately did not jump. I was afraid\u2014I didn\u2019t want to take the risk. I wanted to, but I just couldn\u2019t make myself do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes, other guys did\u2014other guys jumped. They were egging me on: \u201cCome on! Do it!\u201d Listen, I wasn\u2019t\u2014here I am, on national radio, making myself out to be some weakling, \u201cThis is really scary\u201d; but I love sports. I played sports\u2014I had injuries. I was a guy\u2014young guy\u2014so all the typical trappings of young manhood were a part of my life; but, in this particular moment, the guys were saying: \u201cCome on! Jump!\u201d and I just couldn\u2019t do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m with you\u2014I get it. I look down there and go: \u201cNo. Idiots jump. I\u2019m staying right up here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do the bungee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No-o-o. No, no, no. Jump into\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Skydiving? You wouldn\u2019t do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No\u2014probably not. I\u2019m not going to do anything that involves falling long distances. I don\u2019t see any sense in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, Owen. Why is it that for many who profess to be followers of Christ, we end up being more controlled by fear than by faith? Why? Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Great question. Well, I think it\u2019s naturally a part of our sinful makeup to be fearful of the wrong things. There is appropriate fear in life, actually\u2014we should fear God in one, as Christians\u2014so we want to cultivate that in a sense. That\u2019s another kind of topic to talk about. But, fundamentally, we are afraid of risks in life. Especially, in a spiritual sense, we want to win the popularity contest. We want an easy, quiet, nice, safe life; and that is <em>not<\/em>\u2014here\u2019s the news flash\u2014that is <em>not<\/em> what Jesus promises us in Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s been interesting to me to watch over the last couple of years books come out like <em>Crazy Love <\/em>by Francis Chan, <em>Radical <\/em>by David Platt\u2014there is something resident in the heart of a follower of Christ to say, \u201cI do want my faith to be something more than just a play-it-safe faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the day to day of life presses me back into play-it-safe mode. I\u2019m not thinking about needing to go out and conquer the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking about the little risks that God\u2019s asking us to take every day in relationships \/ the risks he\u2019s asking us to take in the choices that we make. That\u2019s the kind of risky faith you\u2019re calling people to; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. I think that <em>Radical, Crazy Love<\/em>, and other books in that vein\u2014in this kind of bigger gospel \/ big God vein\u2014have done a great service to the church. I\u2019m very thankful for them, but what I want to do is re-enchant ordinary Christian living. I want more people to go to Africa \/ I want more people to go to the 10\/40 Window and be missionaries behind the enemy lines, so to speak\u2014we need that\u2014we desperately need that. I hope people will listen to this broadcast and do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we also need to give so-called ordinary Christians\u2014and I would put myself in that category \/ I\u2019m not in Africa or the 10\/40 Window\u2014we need to help them see the glory of everyday Christian living. If you wake up in the suburbs, and drive your car into work, and you work eight to five and come back home\u2014you, too, can lead a big God-glorifying, risk-driven life. That\u2019s not closed off from you. I think people respond to that message when they hear it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say in the book that one of the reasons why we\u2019re not living with risky faith is we\u2019ve stopped living aggressively for the Lord. So, what does that look like in the normal Christian life? You live in Louisville \/ I live in Little Rock. What does somebody living aggressively for the Lord\u2014who\u2019s going to his job, and going to church, and taking the kids to softball or football\u2014what does aggressive living for the Lord look like as compared to generic Christian living?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Fundamentally, it\u2019s grounded in this conviction that I have not been called by Jesus into a way of life that\u2019s supposed to be safe, and neat, and clean. I have been called on this glorious gospel-driven adventure with Jesus Christ, who slayed death and rose from the grave, to give me life, and give me purpose and hope. Now, I\u2019m on mission for Him\u2014I\u2019m doing that whether I\u2019m a pastor, whether I\u2019m a missionary, whether I\u2019m a plumber, a homemaker, professor, teacher, whatever I may be \/ businessman\u2014 and I am going after God\u2019s glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI recognize, furthermore, that, in Genesis 1:27, humanity was given the call to take dominion of all the earth. Now, I\u2019m interpreting that through a Jesus-centered, Jesus-focused lens. So, I\u2019m saying, \u201cHow can I\u2014with my particular gifts and abilities \/ with the particular sphere of life into which God has placed me\u2014how can I give God glory right here and now?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not supposed to look at Billy Graham, and Tim Keller, John Piper\u2014whoever your favorite preacher is\u2014and say: \u201cOh, wow! I\u2019m so thankful that they\u2019re giving God glory and taking dominion. I\u2019m just over here, on the sidelines, cheering them on.\u201d Well, many of us are cheering them on; but we are in the game too\u2014every last one of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe kind of Christian life that is <em>not <\/em>exhibiting that kind of faith is a Christianity that isn\u2019t focused on God\u2019s glory. You go through the motions\u2014you show up at work \/ you\u2019re hanging around your kids\u2014but you\u2019re not really investing in them. You go to church\u2014you listen a little bit, every now and then \/ your mind is drifting to the lake and wave runners\u2014but you\u2019re not really plugged in. You\u2019re not really serving \/ not really a witness in your community in any meaningful way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, no expectations from me, Owen Strachan, that you\u2019re going to be this evangelistic dynamo; but you\u2019re not even really caring about your neighbors. Whereas, the person, who is after God\u2019s glory in all of those spheres, is doing everything they can. They\u2019re praying hard that God will bless them and use them\u2014put them to use in taking dominion of all their life for Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what I hear you saying\u2014we talk at our church about people drinking in and pouring out. I hear you saying if all you\u2019re doing is drinking in, you\u2019re not living the engaged risky gospel life. The pouring out part\u2014you have to be figuring out: \u201cWhat does pouring out look like in my life?\u201d and \u201cHow do I engage that pattern\/that practice?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is a great illustration over in Israel of this\u2014it\u2019s called the Dead Sea. The Jordan River comes into it, and it stops right there. They actually mine that sea today because it\u2019s full of all kinds of deposits of minerals today. Our lives were not intended to be a dead end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>To be a swamp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People who take in spiritual food\/spiritual drink over, and over, and over again\u2014I\u2019m afraid we become obese. God made us to have tension against the muscle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI compare faith to a muscle. If you don\u2019t use it, you\u2019re going to lose it. Faith was given to us by God as a gift to be able to exercise it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can tell you\u2014today, my faith is stronger today than it was back then because I\u2019ve used it. Now, have I failed in doing that?\u2014over, and over, and over again. I\u2019ve caved into fear\u2014I\u2019ve moved into the camp of the doubting Thomases. Who doesn\u2019t; okay? But you get back up again; and you step out in faith, once again, where you\u2019re living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s an illustration in your life, Owen, where you have faced\u2014maybe it\u2019s back to Bob\u2019s question\u2014more of the everyday run-of-the-mill vanilla stuff that all of us face every day\u2014but it was disguised a bit\u2014but, ultimately, it was a step of faith that was required by God of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Well, we were joking about this announcement of a fourth child on the way for the Strachans, which you guys harassed me with earlier\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s a good thing there\u2019s no in-studio cam there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That would have taken the Strachans by surprise. We would have given God much glory in that, of course; but anyway\u2014listen\u2014I\u2019m a young man today. All the cultural pressure is toward being a goofball. I like sports. I enjoy a lot of the same media that young men my age enjoy. I like ESPN and these sorts of things. But so much of the encouragement to young men, like me, is to not build a family. It\u2019s to goof off for as long as you can\u2014avoid responsibility for as long as you can\u2014and then maybe, eventually, down the line, have a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can say, when I was in my mid-young 20s, I heard this call first from Dr. Al Mohler, who I know is a friend of this ministry. He was challenging young men on my seminary campus to go and build a family: \u201cDo something awesome. Build a family\u2014it\u2019s something that lasts for the rest of your lifetime, Lord willing.\u201d I can say that I have felt, since then, that this is a scary undertaking in certain ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a sacrificial undertaking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>\u2014and that is <em>against<\/em> the spirit of the age. Young men today are not being encouraged to be <em>sacrificial <\/em>in their lives. So, it\u2019s been hard at different points\u2014it\u2019s hard when I come home. I can fully understand what other young fathers feel\u2014or older fathers feel\u2014when they come home from a long day at work. What you want to do is put up your feet, turn on ESPN or whatever else, pick up the paper\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014and you want to tune out \/ you want to rest. Instead, you have\u2014I have three little children who come home and pounce on me, and are so eager to see Dad, and play, and spend time with me. I need to invest. That is just as hard for me, a seminary and college professor teaching theology, as it is for any man\u2014but that is my call\u2014to <em>risk<\/em> my comfort and get active.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have three sons, who have been grafted into my family\u2014they got my daughters; okay?\u2014alright? And there\u2019s a story about one of them\u2014that he won\u2019t mind \/ \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll keep him unnamed. It\u2019s a great story because, when he was dating my daughter, at a point, we were having a good healthy conversation. He said: \u201cYou know, I think I\u2019ll just keep on having a good time with the guys. We\u2019ll camp out down by the fire, sit down\u2014you know, have some fun\u2014go fishing ,\u00a0 swimming down by the lake, and\u2026\u201d I said, \u201cYou know, all that\u2019s good \/ I understand that. I hear that call today; but,\u201d I said, \u201cyou know, if my daughter is the one for you, there\u2019s going to be a D-Day\u2014and it\u2019s not invasion.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s not a Dennis Day; is it? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, it\u2019s not a Dennis Day. It may demand a Dennis Day, though, \u201cBut there\u2019s going to be a D-Day that demands you to go, \u2018You know, that really looks like a waste of time compared to what God\u2019s got in real life in taking a bride\/taking responsibility.\u2019\u201d It was interesting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I gave him my daughter\u2019s hand in marriage, I kind of looked at him and winked. I said, \u201cYou know, there really is something better than going down by the lake, building a bonfire, and sitting by the guys; isn\u2019t there?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think there is some inertia in the lives of guys to just want to\u2014we\u2019re talking about guys here because we are guys. This is probably true for everybody who is listening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014inertia to just relax, or check out, or rest or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you, Bob. It\u2019s back to fear again. Owen\u2019s book has a subtitle: <em>Abandon Fear and Build Something Awesome.<\/em> It sounds like an advertisement for Home Depot<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; okay? But it\u2019s real life! If you\u2019re going to accomplish something with your life, you will have to face down fear. There\u2019s a reason why the David and Goliath story has been popularized today by Malcolm Gladwell. He wrote <em>The Tipping Point.<\/em> He spotted a cultural trend\u2014I think he\u2019s onto something big here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re a generation that is more into our fear and playing it safe than we are into stepping out in faith, and trusting God, and try to do something\u2014what you said here\u2014build something awesome. A marriage and a family are just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes. And listen, this is going to affect all of us. This is not a guy problem alone\u2014this is a generational problem, like you just said. All around us are meta-narratives or big stories that people want to get swept up into. You turn on the TV\u2014you see romantic comedies, you see Jane Austen\u2019s fiction, or something like this. You see the ESPN stuff. You see movies, where there are superheroes conquering the world. Okay, all around us are these grand stories and people are getting swept up into them. Or if people are falling prey to sexual temptation and lust, that\u2019s a grand story too; right?\u2014\u201cI can conquer the world. I can prove my prowess.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristianity needs to not be this kind of padded room that you enter if you trust Jesus, where everything is soft, and safe, and easy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristianity\u2014for guy or girl \/ young or old\u2014needs to be about going on mission with Jesus. Let me give just one example. A young woman today can either play it safe and lead a cultural life\u2014let\u2019s say a young guy hasn\u2019t stepped up to the plate to ask her for her hand. She can build a career that glorifies the Lord. Perhaps, there\u2019s a social justice cause out there that she can apply the gospel to. Perhaps, she\u2019s the next one who is supposed to take on abortion, and be the William Wilberforce of this generation, and shut it down through different means. There is <em>no limit<\/em> to what God can do through us, but we are limiting ourselves through this kind of \u201cbest life now\u201d theology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it may be that she\u2019s investing in her workplace\/in the job. Let\u2019s say she\u2019s a doctor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She\u2019s saying: \u201cOkay, this is where I can focus. This is how I can advance the cause of Christ,\u201d rather than thinking, \u201cI show up, punch the clock, get my paycheck, and then I\u2019ll go to church and do my two hours there\u201d; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re talking about asking the question in every aspect of life, \u201cHow can I make the Kingdom the priority and get in the game?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. Let me give you an example of this\u2014a story from my own life, quickly. I\u2019ve been pro-life for many years. I know this isn\u2019t a show about pro-life or something, but here\u2019s an example. But I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> thought of myself as somebody who would ever go to an abortion clinic and do anything; okay? I have no training \/ I have no background in that\u2014ardently\/passionately pro-life\u2014but I finally, a couple of years ago, decided to go to Market Street in Louisville, Kentucky, and go to the one abortion clinic in town. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that there were some folks from area churches who went down. They didn\u2019t shout at people \/ they didn\u2019t\u2014most of them\u2014hold up signs or something. They tried to counsel women, through the gospel, to not have abortions\u2014to not have abortions and then come to church to be saved. I got involved in that ministry. I didn\u2019t set new standards for any kind of success or something, but that was a risk that I think the Lord called me to take and gave me the grace to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we\u2019ve underscored the need for us to face down our fears in the small issues\/the big issues. For some, who are listening right now, the step of faith may involve a relationship that\u2019s not right. Maybe, it\u2019s one where you need to ask, in faith, for forgiveness. Maybe, it\u2019s one where you need to respond, in faith, with forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Maybe, it\u2019s a person you need to go to and confront\u2014and call them out of some wrong behavior \/ something they\u2019re about to do that\u2019s tragic\u2014that they need a voice from the outside to step into their lives and say: \u201cDon\u2019t do this! I love you, but don\u2019t do this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt also may be something\u2014and Owen, I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re aware of <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>and <em>Stepping Up<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>\u2014but they\u2019re video series that we designed to put in the hands of laymen and women to make a difference in their neighborhoods, their churches, their businesses, their community\u2014and to, frankly, push back against the forces that are seeking to destroy marriage and family today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and to take a positive stand, and to equip people to make their marriage and family go the distance \/ to equip men to know what it looks like to be a man today in the culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Owen: <\/strong>Awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It may be there are some listeners, right now, who are listening to our broadcast\u2014and they\u2019ve heard us talk about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\/<em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014and they\u2019ve just been afraid. It\u2019s bigger than any organization to address. It\u2019s the body of Christ\u2014it is the church, ultimately, in action\u2014where they live, making a difference, and pushing back and doing something on behalf of the gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think the question is: \u201cWhen was the last time you took a risk? When was the last time you said, \u2018I\u2019m going to step out in faith\u2014I\u2019m going to take some risk, but I care more about God\u2019s agenda than I do about my own comfort or my own reputation.\u2019?\u201d That\u2019s really what is at the heart of what you\u2019ve written in your book, <em>Risky Gospel,<\/em> calling us to step away from comfort, and ease, and false security; and instead, step into the mission that God has for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have copies of Owen\u2019s book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center.
