I just randomly said: \u201cHaley, we\u2019re going to stop in this gas station. Daddy is going to go in. You sure about this?\u2014the fifth Gospel here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am\u2014got the author of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re going to have to explain to our audience why we have a fifth Gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve got Bobby Conway joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014who has written <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Is that right?\u00a0 Have you done that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, I would not want to say that I\u2019ve done that\u2014no. There are four Gospels, but this is a fifth one\u2014but it\u2019s not an inspired one\u2014but, hopefully, it is an inspiring one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ll get to that in a second. Bobby is a good friend. He is pastor of Life Fellowship Church near Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We are adding the \u201cThe\u201d to it now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are. We are. Yes, I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Ohio State University. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s good. I just think it\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Southern Baptist\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. I get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He and his wife Heather serve on our FamilyLife <em>Weekend to <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>marriage conference speaker team. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, you\u2019ve served for almost a decade; haven\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s been a long time. I think it\u2019s going on nine years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unbelievable. They have two children\u2014a 15-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son. He is the author of <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Before you start calling the ECFA or someone to report us to for heresy\u2014we\u2019re going to find out from Bobby what he means by the fifth Gospel; okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, several years ago, I heard a quote by the late British evangelist, Gypsy Smith, who once quipped, \u201cThere are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the Christian.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cBut most people never read the first four.\u201d\u00a0 I was <em>stunned<\/em> by that quote. The more I thought about it\u2014I thought, \u201cBoy, this really has some relevance\u2014especially in a culture where people do not read the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnfortunately, the church doesn\u2019t always have the best reputation. So, just the whole idea of: \u201cWhat would it look like to write a book called <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to challenge people to ask each other, \u201cAre you a fifth Gospel Christian?\u201d\u00a0 I just said a moment ago, \u201cI\u2019m not implying that this is an inspired Gospel or life but, hopefully, our lives are inspiring.\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s the whole idea behind <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Again, I\u2019m not saying that we just got to live this moral life and everybody is going to get saved because the gospel is meant to do more than be lived\u2014it\u2019s meant to leak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as Paul says, \u201cHow can they hear unless someone tells them?\u201d\u00a0 At the same token, our message will have such a greater impact if we really seek to follow the Messenger, Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And live it out in our homes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and equip our kids to do the same. I think that\u2019s a good bit of the reason why so many young people today are leaving the church. Their parents have talked about the Gospels and the gospel of Jesus Christ; but when it comes time to live it, the children have looked up and they\u2019ve gone, \u201cNot so much.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, certainly, a lot of unbelievers have said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not a Christian\u2014those Christians are all a bunch of\u2026\u201d What\u2019s the word that comes next?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Hypocrites. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. And so, in writing a book called <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>, you\u2019re saying we\u2019ve got to address the hypocrisy gap that\u2019s there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In fact, you have a quote in your book by Gandhi. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever read this before. He said: \u201cI like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s exactly what he did say. I think that a lot of people would share that sentiment, Dennis. And so, for us, it\u2019s important for us to figure out how we can really be the real deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, when this book came out recently\u2014even on the day it came out\u2014I told my wife\u2014I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to begin talking about this whole idea of the fifth Gospel, and I hope I\u2019m a fifth Gospel Christian,\u201d because I know what it feels like, even in the home, as Heather and I\u2014we do these marriage conferences. I can remember a time I couldn\u2019t get her out of the car at the airport\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were getting ready to go to a FamilyLife conference\u2014because we were having an argument on the way to the airport. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On your way to a marriage conference?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I didn\u2019t want you to know because I figured you\u2019d fire me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019re speaking\u2014you\u2019re speaking at our conferences?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, probably\u2014I probably shouldn\u2019t have admitted this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do you know how many times that has happened to Barbara and me?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>How did it happen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh my goodness!\u00a0 Some of our <em>worst<\/em> arguments have occurred on <em>our way<\/em> to do a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway\u2014it\u2019s game time. You\u2019re about to instruct several hundred couples\u2014if not a thousand couples\u2014in how to do marriage God\u2019s way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And maybe that\u2019s one of the places we need to start in unpacking this idea of us being a fifth Gospel because, as you said, the first four are not only inspired\u2014they are infallible \/ they\u2019re perfect. Our fifth Gospel will never be perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things\u2014when people say, \u201cWell, Christians are hypocrites,\u201d it\u2019s because we are flawed and imperfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow can we be a legitimate representation of the gospel when our lives are as flawed as they are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019ve got to correct you, though, Bob. We will be perfect someday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, okay, I\u2019ll give you that. You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. There is a day when we are going to be perfect because we will be transformed. We will see Him as He is, and He will finish up the job of redeeming us and transforming us into His likeness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In the meantime, however,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. We\u2019re not there yet. So, how can we be an accurate representation of the gospel when our lives are messy?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, I think that we need to be honest and humble as Christians. I think that that\u2019s one way that those we are trying to share Christ with\u2014is that if we can just concede the fact that we <em>don\u2019t<\/em> have life all together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had somebody go out to lunch with me several years ago. He wanted to sit down\u2014and as we were talking, he said: \u201cYou know? What do you fear the most?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, besides God\u2014I fear myself the most because I know how fallen and flawed I am. Sometimes, the thought of living 40 or 50 more years and not messing this whole thing up\u2014it\u2019s a scary thought. I want to be faithful to Jesus, and I want to love Him. I want to give Him my life and surrender to Him, and I don\u2019t want to give the world an excuse to blast Christ at the expense of my unsubmitted life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same token, when I do blow it and when I mess up\u2014maybe as we just talked about with my wife\u2014to quickly say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d to repent \/ to remind my kids that \u201cDaddy\u2019s a work in progress,\u201d to get on my knees before them and say, \u201cForgive me.\u201d And so, asking for forgiveness\u2014not\u2014you know, you get into this whole thing called Christianity by admitting you\u2019re a sinner. Then, many Christians go on spending the rest of their life acting like they\u2019re not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to remember the cross every day. A Fifth Gospel Christian needs to go before the cross to remember our need for Jesus and really live a God-dependent life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we live that way, hopefully, they\u2019ll see that we are depending on something beyond ourselves for life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m glad you started where you did\u2014in the home. Truthfully, Chuck Swindoll said, \u201cIt\u2019s at home, among family members, that life makes up its mind.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s at home, among family members, where our Christianity\u2014our walk with Jesus Christ \/ our Christlikeness or our lack of it\u2014will most often be displayed and be seen by our spouse and by our children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s the proving ground; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is. And so, I\u2019m so glad you started right there. Some listeners may be hearing us and go, \u201cSo, what does the fifth Gospel have to do with my marriage?\u2014for me, as a parent \/ a grandparent?\u201d\u00a0 And the answer is: \u201cEverything.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read a verse that I want to make a comment about it\u2014maybe the most often repeated verse here, in the last five years, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Maybe I\u2019m learning something at home, myself, here. Ephesians 4:32: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBack, last summer and fall, we did three <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> events in Washington, DC, Chicago, and Portland. We have\u2014it\u2019s not a ceremony, as such, but we have a moment that we come to\u2014that\u2019s a point of decision where we ask those in attendance if there is something they need to ask their spouse to forgive them for. I\u2019m always amazed at this moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn one of the locations, we had about 4,000 people. We had about 1,000 roses on the table. We challenged people\u2014if they have something they need to ask their spouse to forgive them for\u2014to come forward, and to get a rose, and to take the rose back to their spouse and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for such and such?\u201d\u00a0 Then, wait. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m always amazed when we do this how many people come forward. We had very few of those roses\u2014the 1,000 roses\u2014at the end of the event. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what you just tapped into, Bobby\u2014what you just talked about\u2014of our need to ask for forgiveness \/ our need to forgive\u2014is at the core of Christianity; but it\u2019s also at the core of having a marriage that\u2019s a fifth Gospel marriage that looks like Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. It\u2019s one of the ways that God distinguishes us in the world\u2014is through forgiveness. Many people in the world, outside of a Christian worldview\u2014they are all about justice. Jesus calls us to forgive. It happens to be that marriage is the greatest training ground for us to forgive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, think of it like this\u2014we can\u2019t even be like Jesus unless we forgive. So, that means God has to allow us to be hurt in life <em>so that<\/em> we can be like Jesus and forgive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the place where we are hurt the most often in life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>\u2014is in the home. As the disciples said: \u201cHow often should we forgive?\u2014seven times?\u201d\u00a0 And then, Jesus says, \u201cSeven times seventy.\u201d\u00a0 So, \u201cOh great\u2014we can do the math. All we have to do is forgive each other 490 times!\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 Well, obviously, he was saying, \u201cKeep on doing it.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>You know what?\u00a0 Forgiveness is hard work, but we are never acting more like Jesus than when we say: \u201cFather, forgive them. They know not what they do.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, so, I\u2019m just speaking theoretically here. Mind you, it\u2019s not reality at all. Has there ever been a time when you wounded Heather and you needed to ask for forgiveness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bobby: <\/strong>No, not at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and you could share that story with our listeners to give them an illustration of what that looks like and what the process looks like of coming to the conclusion of asking for forgiveness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, for a specific story\u2014I can remember we were living in Dallas during our seminary days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a home where my mom was obsessive about ironing. I mean, she would iron our underwear. She would iron a curtain. She irons the sheets. I mean\u2014anything. You\u2019re going to get ironed if you are in her way. She loved ironing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHeather\u2014her philosophy\u2014and she doesn\u2019t mind me sharing this. She says, \u201cHey, why bother ironing it when you\u2019re going to sit down and it\u2019s going to get wrinkled up anyway?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I go into this marital relationship with my bride. I go out, while we\u2019re in seminary, where the laundry room is in the garage. I was looking for my jeans. I found my jeans all scrunched up. It looked like they\u2019d be sitting in the dryer for about a month. I took these jeans\u2014that now looked like toddler-sized jeans\u2014and I walked into the kitchen where she was. I held the jeans up in front of her. I said this: \u201cDo you plan on ironing these anytime soon?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Not a good statement; right?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How long did that night last?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I slept outside that night; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she had me right where she wanted me because she knows that I equally hate mowing the lawn. The lawn got so high that\u2014it got so high that I needed to wear long rubber boots to go out and mow it because I\u2019m scared of snakes. If you think Indiana Jones hates snakes, you haven\u2019t seen anything\u2014I <em>really<\/em> hate snakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe looked over my shoulder as I was holding those jeans up, and she was looking out the window. She said, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll plan on ironing those when you plan on mowing the lawn.\u201d\u00a0 And you know?\u00a0 We just had this moment where we started laughing together. It was a tit for tat. I just realized that I\u2019m calling her out on something that I was frustrated by; when on the same token, I wasn\u2019t doing what I was supposed to be doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just provided a good opportunity for me to kind of show more grace in the home\u2014don\u2019t walk around with a log in my own eye. Be a humble\/forgiving kind of a husband, and ask for forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, again, that\u2019s back to: \u201cWhat\u2019s at the core of the gospel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve received great grace from God for multiple offenses. Now, the question is: \u201cCan you be a dispenser of that grace to others in your life?\u201d or \u201cAre you going to hold them to a standard that\u2019s higher than the one God holds you to?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019ve got a question for you. I know you are raising two teenagers right now. Nothing was as challenging as the teenage years for us; okay?\u00a0 I want to know\u2014other than modeling\u2014how are you teaching a teenage young lady, 15 \/ a young man, who is 13\u2014 to be a fifth-Gospel-practicing follower of Jesus Christ?\u00a0 How are you passing it on to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, one of the things that I\u2019ve done that was just so thrilling for me\u2014last year, I took my son\u2019s friends and I created a discipleship group. I discipled these boys\u2014they were 12 and 13 last year, at the time\u2014and spent an entire year. They would get dropped at our church offices, and I would just invest in them and talk to them about: \u201cWhat is manhood? What does it mean to follow Jesus?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do you read your Bible? What does a life of prayer look like? How do you share the gospel? How do you be a leader amongst leaders?\u201d Some of those discipleship principles were <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember driving home one night after church. I felt a sense of: \u201cI want to model, as a dad, what it looks like to share Jesus with others before my kids. I don\u2019t want them to grow up in a home and just learn about a bunch of moral principles from me as their father.\u201d\u00a0 I remember I was just driving. I just randomly thought\u2014and I\u2019m not suggesting people need to go do this, but I felt like I needed to do it. I said: \u201cHaley, we\u2019re going to stop in this gas station. Daddy is going to go in. I\u2019m just going to look for someone to tell about Jesus, and I want you to pray.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 She probably thought, \u201cThis guy is nuts!\u201d\u00a0 But that\u2019s exactly what we did. We went into the gas station, and I went looking for an opportunity to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother time, Heather and I\u2014we said, \u201cLet\u2019s just go\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, wait. What happened in the gas station?\u00a0 Did you find somebody to talk to?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I did. I just walked up to the person at the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>At the counter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>\u2014counter. I don\u2019t remember what the person said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t anything magical. Sometimes, you don\u2019t see\u2014it\u2019s not that the person ends up getting saved like we would like them to. It\u2019s just that we were faithful \/ we were bold, and we did what we felt we needed to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you were doing something on purpose. You were intentional\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014about being a part of the Great Commission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Exactly. There have been times where I feel like I\u2019ve really missed out on those moments. But another thing that we did to model the Great Commission is\u2014we went out, and we got a bunch of gift certificates one time. We said, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s just start driving into this real poor area,\u201d\u2014where we felt like we could be helpful and give need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started walking around, as a family, praying for the community. We said, \u201cGod, lead us to people outside who could use a gift certificate, and some prayer, and we could share the gospel with them,\u201d\u2014and just simple little things like that. There hasn\u2019t been enough of those moments in our lives, but there has been some where they can hold on to a few stories where they can see that Mom and Dad tried to do more than just teach them moral behavior but missional living\u2014giving our lives away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, where did you catch this disease?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, you are on a serious mission. You want to implant this disease in other followers of Christ, where they are like Christ\u2014living out His life where they do theirs. Where did you get the picture for this?\u00a0 Who was the most influential person who passed this onto you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Dennis, I never heard the gospel until I was 19. I grew up in California. At about the age of 15, I started abusing alcohol\u2014got into drugs\u2014became very promiscuous \/ always looking for the next girl. My life was empty. I didn\u2019t know why I existed. I remember taking LSD and saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to go find myself.\u201d\u00a0 I was desperately looking for purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t have any education. I was so uneducated I failed the ASVAB three times to get in the military to be an infantry man. In the United States Army, you needed a 28. I got a 27. I wanted to be a Marine\u2014you needed a 31. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just utterly uneducated\u2014full of guilt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I was playing baseball\u2014and it was about the only thing in my life that protected me from imploding. I was playing at a community college, and a teammate took me hear an evangelist by the name of Greg Laurie. I resonated with Greg because he used words like, \u201cDude, cool, bro, and stoked.\u201d\u00a0 He spoke in a vernacular that I could understand at that season of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bobby: <\/strong>I ended up placing my faith in Jesus. About a year-and-a-half after I got saved, I went to an AA meeting. I would go to an AA meeting on October 9, 1994. By God\u2019s grace, I did over 400 meetings in my first year of sobriety; and I just came alive. I got engaged at Saddleback Church. I was part of Celebrate Recovery program there. I wanted to witness to everything that moved. I was working at the Ritz-Carlton as a valet parker. I started getting in trouble because people started complaining about the guy who is pulling up their car and putting it on the Christian radio stations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\u00a0 So, then, I ended up having a powerful moment where I sensed the Lord calling me into fulltime ministry. Andy Stanley once said: \u201cGod gives you a vision. Then, He grows you into it.\u201d\u00a0 I needed to get educated, and it was a long time coming for me to prepare to be a pastor because this empty head needed to be filled. I had a big heart and a small head. I went off to Bible college in Conway, Arkansas. I started witnessing, on my own, to 50 to 100 people per week. I said, \u201cMy burden took me and taught me.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can remember working in Conway at Virco, as a security guard. I had nobody to share the gospel with. I started opening up the white pages and randomly calling people, asking if I could share Jesus with them. I stood up on a bench at UCA, and I would share Jesus. People just thought, \u201cThis guy is nuts\u2014he\u2019s weird.\u201d\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t trying to be like the weirdo. I was so in love with Jesus Christ\u2014and all of a sudden, that changed my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started reading\u2014not because I wanted to read\u2014but because I loved God and reading was my ticket to knowing the God I loved. I started growing, and growing, and growing. My life was transformed. Now, I\u2019ve been married for 18 years. I\u2019ve got two kids, and I go on to Dallas Theological Seminary. Then, I go and graduate with my doctorate summa cum laude. Now, I\u2019m in a Russell Group school in England. I\u2019m working on my second doctorate in moral philosophy. It\u2019s all God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And God has a plan for every listener, who is hearing this story. He wants to use you as well. It may not be the same route as He\u2019s taken Bobby, but the point is\u2014God does have a plan. He has a mission for you and an assignment for you. It may just be right there in your marriage \/ in your home\u2014raising this brood of children who will follow Christ. That is a holy assignment. The issue is\u2014you need to be helping them become followers of Christ. As Bobby Conway has written\u2014they need to be the fifth Gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, Fifth Gospel Christians are those who live it out\u2014who put the gospel on display where people see: \u201cThis makes a difference in how they live \/ it makes a difference in what they do when they mess up.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not just that they live perfectly. It\u2019s that, when they mess up\u2014they confess, they repent, they turn around, and go in a different direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love the way Paul says it in Titus, Chapter 2, when he says that our lives are supposed to adorn the doctrine of God. That is, our life should beautify that doctrine. You sure about this?\u2014the fifth Gospel here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I am\u2014got the author of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re going to have to explain to our audience why we have a fifth Gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve got Bobby Conway joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014who has written <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Is that right?\u00a0 Have you done that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, I would not want to say that I\u2019ve done that\u2014no. There are four Gospels, but this is a fifth one\u2014but it\u2019s not an inspired one\u2014but, hopefully, it is an inspiring one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ll get to that in a second. Bobby is a good friend. He is pastor of Life Fellowship Church near Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a graduate of <em>The<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We are adding the \u201cThe\u201d to it now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are. We are. Yes, I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Ohio State University. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s good. I just think it\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Southern Baptist\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. I get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He and his wife Heather serve on our FamilyLife <em>Weekend to <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>marriage conference speaker team. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, you\u2019ve served for almost a decade; haven\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s been a long time. I think it\u2019s going on nine years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unbelievable. They have two children\u2014a 15-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son. He is the author of <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Before you start calling the ECFA or someone to report us to for heresy\u2014we\u2019re going to find out from Bobby what he means by the fifth Gospel; okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, several years ago, I heard a quote by the late British evangelist, Gypsy Smith, who once quipped, \u201cThere are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the Christian.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cBut most people never read the first four.\u201d\u00a0 I was <em>stunned<\/em> by that quote. The more I thought about it\u2014I thought, \u201cBoy, this really has some relevance\u2014especially in a culture where people do not read the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnfortunately, the church doesn\u2019t always have the best reputation. So, just the whole idea of: \u201cWhat would it look like to write a book called <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to challenge people to ask each other, \u201cAre you a fifth Gospel Christian?\u201d\u00a0 I just said a moment ago, \u201cI\u2019m not implying that this is an inspired Gospel or life but, hopefully, our lives are inspiring.\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s the whole idea behind <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>. Again, I\u2019m not saying that we just got to live this moral life and everybody is going to get saved because the gospel is meant to do more than be lived\u2014it\u2019s meant to leak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as Paul says, \u201cHow can they hear unless someone tells them?\u201d\u00a0 At the same token, our message will have such a greater impact if we really seek to follow the Messenger, Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And live it out in our homes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and equip our kids to do the same. I think that\u2019s a good bit of the reason why so many young people today are leaving the church. Their parents have talked about the Gospels and the gospel of Jesus Christ; but when it comes time to live it, the children have looked up and they\u2019ve gone, \u201cNot so much.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, certainly, a lot of unbelievers have said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not a Christian\u2014those Christians are all a bunch of\u2026\u201d What\u2019s the word that comes next?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Hypocrites. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. And so, in writing a book called <em>The Fifth Gospel<\/em>, you\u2019re saying we\u2019ve got to address the hypocrisy gap that\u2019s there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In fact, you have a quote in your book by Gandhi. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever read this before. He said: \u201cI like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s exactly what he did say. I think that a lot of people would share that sentiment, Dennis. And so, for us, it\u2019s important for us to figure out how we can really be the real deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, when this book came out recently\u2014even on the day it came out\u2014I told my wife\u2014I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to begin talking about this whole idea of the fifth Gospel, and I hope I\u2019m a fifth Gospel Christian,\u201d because I know what it feels like, even in the home, as Heather and I\u2014we do these marriage conferences. I can remember a time I couldn\u2019t get her out of the car at the airport\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were getting ready to go to a FamilyLife conference\u2014because we were having an argument on the way to the airport. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On your way to a marriage conference?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I didn\u2019t want you to know because I figured you\u2019d fire me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019re speaking\u2014you\u2019re speaking at our conferences?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, probably\u2014I probably shouldn\u2019t have admitted this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do you know how many times that has happened to Barbara and me?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>How did it happen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh my goodness!\u00a0 Some of our <em>worst<\/em> arguments have occurred on <em>our way<\/em> to do a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway\u2014it\u2019s game time. You\u2019re about to instruct several hundred couples\u2014if not a thousand couples\u2014in how to do marriage God\u2019s way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And maybe that\u2019s one of the places we need to start in unpacking this idea of us being a fifth Gospel because, as you said, the first four are not only inspired\u2014they are infallible \/ they\u2019re perfect. Our fifth Gospel will never be perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things\u2014when people say, \u201cWell, Christians are hypocrites,\u201d it\u2019s because we are flawed and imperfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow can we be a legitimate representation of the gospel when our lives are as flawed as they are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019ve got to correct you, though, Bob. We will be perfect someday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, okay, I\u2019ll give you that. You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. There is a day when we are going to be perfect because we will be transformed. We will see Him as He is, and He will finish up the job of redeeming us and transforming us into His likeness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In the meantime, however,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. We\u2019re not there yet. So, how can we be an accurate representation of the gospel when our lives are messy?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, I think that we need to be honest and humble as Christians. I think that that\u2019s one way that those we are trying to share Christ with\u2014is that if we can just concede the fact that we <em>don\u2019t<\/em> have life all together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had somebody go out to lunch with me several years ago. He wanted to sit down\u2014and as we were talking, he said: \u201cYou know? What do you fear the most?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, besides God\u2014I fear myself the most because I know how fallen and flawed I am. Sometimes, the thought of living 40 or 50 more years and not messing this whole thing up\u2014it\u2019s a scary thought. I want to be faithful to Jesus, and I want to love Him. I want to give Him my life and surrender to Him, and I don\u2019t want to give the world an excuse to blast Christ at the expense of my unsubmitted life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same token, when I do blow it and when I mess up\u2014maybe as we just talked about with my wife\u2014to quickly say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d to repent \/ to remind my kids that \u201cDaddy\u2019s a work in progress,\u201d to get on my knees before them and say, \u201cForgive me.\u201d And so, asking for forgiveness\u2014not\u2014you know, you get into this whole thing called Christianity by admitting you\u2019re a sinner. Then, many Christians go on spending the rest of their life acting like they\u2019re not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to remember the cross every day. A Fifth Gospel Christian needs to go before the cross to remember our need for Jesus and really live a God-dependent life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we live that way, hopefully, they\u2019ll see that we are depending on something beyond ourselves for life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m glad you started where you did\u2014in the home. Truthfully, Chuck Swindoll said, \u201cIt\u2019s at home, among family members, that life makes up its mind.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s at home, among family members, where our Christianity\u2014our walk with Jesus Christ \/ our Christlikeness or our lack of it\u2014will most often be displayed and be seen by our spouse and by our children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s the proving ground; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is. And so, I\u2019m so glad you started right there. Some listeners may be hearing us and go, \u201cSo, what does the fifth Gospel have to do with my marriage?\u2014for me, as a parent \/ a grandparent?\u201d\u00a0 And the answer is: \u201cEverything.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read a verse that I want to make a comment about it\u2014maybe the most often repeated verse here, in the last five years, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Maybe I\u2019m learning something at home, myself, here. Ephesians 4:32: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBack, last summer and fall, we did three <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> events in Washington, DC, Chicago, and Portland. We have\u2014it\u2019s not a ceremony, as such, but we have a moment that we come to\u2014that\u2019s a point of decision where we ask those in attendance if there is something they need to ask their spouse to forgive them for. I\u2019m always amazed at this moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn one of the locations, we had about 4,000 people. We had about 1,000 roses on the table. We challenged people\u2014if they have something they need to ask their spouse to forgive them for\u2014to come forward, and to get a rose, and to take the rose back to their spouse and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for such and such?\u201d\u00a0 Then, wait. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m always amazed when we do this how many people come forward. We had very few of those roses\u2014the 1,000 roses\u2014at the end of the event. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what you just tapped into, Bobby\u2014what you just talked about\u2014of our need to ask for forgiveness \/ our need to forgive\u2014is at the core of Christianity; but it\u2019s also at the core of having a marriage that\u2019s a fifth Gospel marriage that looks like Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right. It\u2019s one of the ways that God distinguishes us in the world\u2014is through forgiveness. Many people in the world, outside of a Christian worldview\u2014they are all about justice. Jesus calls us to forgive. It happens to be that marriage is the greatest training ground for us to forgive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, think of it like this\u2014we can\u2019t even be like Jesus unless we forgive. So, that means God has to allow us to be hurt in life <em>so that<\/em> we can be like Jesus and forgive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the place where we are hurt the most often in life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>\u2014is in the home. As the disciples said: \u201cHow often should we forgive?\u2014seven times?\u201d\u00a0 And then, Jesus says, \u201cSeven times seventy.\u201d\u00a0 So, \u201cOh great\u2014we can do the math. All we have to do is forgive each other 490 times!\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 Well, obviously, he was saying, \u201cKeep on doing it.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>You know what?\u00a0 Forgiveness is hard work, but we are never acting more like Jesus than when we say: \u201cFather, forgive them. They know not what they do.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, so, I\u2019m just speaking theoretically here. Mind you, it\u2019s not reality at all. Has there ever been a time when you wounded Heather and you needed to ask for forgiveness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bobby: <\/strong>No, not at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and you could share that story with our listeners to give them an illustration of what that looks like and what the process looks like of coming to the conclusion of asking for forgiveness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, for a specific story\u2014I can remember we were living in Dallas during our seminary days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a home where my mom was obsessive about ironing. I mean, she would iron our underwear. She would iron a curtain. She irons the sheets. I mean\u2014anything. You\u2019re going to get ironed if you are in her way. She loved ironing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHeather\u2014her philosophy\u2014and she doesn\u2019t mind me sharing this. She says, \u201cHey, why bother ironing it when you\u2019re going to sit down and it\u2019s going to get wrinkled up anyway?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I go into this marital relationship with my bride. I go out, while we\u2019re in seminary, where the laundry room is in the garage. I was looking for my jeans. I found my jeans all scrunched up. It looked like they\u2019d be sitting in the dryer for about a month. I took these jeans\u2014that now looked like toddler-sized jeans\u2014and I walked into the kitchen where she was. I held the jeans up in front of her. I said this: \u201cDo you plan on ironing these anytime soon?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Not a good statement; right?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How long did that night last?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I slept outside that night; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she had me right where she wanted me because she knows that I equally hate mowing the lawn. The lawn got so high that\u2014it got so high that I needed to wear long rubber boots to go out and mow it because I\u2019m scared of snakes. If you think Indiana Jones hates snakes, you haven\u2019t seen anything\u2014I <em>really<\/em> hate snakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe looked over my shoulder as I was holding those jeans up, and she was looking out the window. She said, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll plan on ironing those when you plan on mowing the lawn.\u201d\u00a0 And you know?\u00a0 We just had this moment where we started laughing together. It was a tit for tat. I just realized that I\u2019m calling her out on something that I was frustrated by; when on the same token, I wasn\u2019t doing what I was supposed to be doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just provided a good opportunity for me to kind of show more grace in the home\u2014don\u2019t walk around with a log in my own eye. Be a humble\/forgiving kind of a husband, and ask for forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, again, that\u2019s back to: \u201cWhat\u2019s at the core of the gospel?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve received great grace from God for multiple offenses. Now, the question is: \u201cCan you be a dispenser of that grace to others in your life?\u201d or \u201cAre you going to hold them to a standard that\u2019s higher than the one God holds you to?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019ve got a question for you. I know you are raising two teenagers right now. Nothing was as challenging as the teenage years for us; okay?\u00a0 I want to know\u2014other than modeling\u2014how are you teaching a teenage young lady, 15 \/ a young man, who is 13\u2014 to be a fifth-Gospel-practicing follower of Jesus Christ?\u00a0 How are you passing it on to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Well, one of the things that I\u2019ve done that was just so thrilling for me\u2014last year, I took my son\u2019s friends and I created a discipleship group. I discipled these boys\u2014they were 12 and 13 last year, at the time\u2014and spent an entire year. They would get dropped at our church offices, and I would just invest in them and talk to them about: \u201cWhat is manhood? What does it mean to follow Jesus?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do you read your Bible? What does a life of prayer look like? How do you share the gospel? How do you be a leader amongst leaders?\u201d Some of those discipleship principles were <em>huge<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember driving home one night after church. I felt a sense of: \u201cI want to model, as a dad, what it looks like to share Jesus with others before my kids. I don\u2019t want them to grow up in a home and just learn about a bunch of moral principles from me as their father.\u201d\u00a0 I remember I was just driving. I just randomly thought\u2014and I\u2019m not suggesting people need to go do this, but I felt like I needed to do it. I said: \u201cHaley, we\u2019re going to stop in this gas station. Daddy is going to go in. I\u2019m just going to look for someone to tell about Jesus, and I want you to pray.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 She probably thought, \u201cThis guy is nuts!\u201d\u00a0 But that\u2019s exactly what we did. We went into the gas station, and I went looking for an opportunity to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother time, Heather and I\u2014we said, \u201cLet\u2019s just go\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, wait. What happened in the gas station?\u00a0 Did you find somebody to talk to?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes, I did. I just walked up to the person at the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>At the counter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>\u2014counter. I don\u2019t remember what the person said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t anything magical. Sometimes, you don\u2019t see\u2014it\u2019s not that the person ends up getting saved like we would like them to. It\u2019s just that we were faithful \/ we were bold, and we did what we felt we needed to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you were doing something on purpose. You were intentional\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014about being a part of the Great Commission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Exactly. There have been times where I feel like I\u2019ve really missed out on those moments. But another thing that we did to model the Great Commission is\u2014we went out, and we got a bunch of gift certificates one time. We said, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s just start driving into this real poor area,\u201d\u2014where we felt like we could be helpful and give need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started walking around, as a family, praying for the community. We said, \u201cGod, lead us to people outside who could use a gift certificate, and some prayer, and we could share the gospel with them,\u201d\u2014and just simple little things like that. There hasn\u2019t been enough of those moments in our lives, but there has been some where they can hold on to a few stories where they can see that Mom and Dad tried to do more than just teach them moral behavior but missional living\u2014giving our lives away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, where did you catch this disease?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, you are on a serious mission. You want to implant this disease in other followers of Christ, where they are like Christ\u2014living out His life where they do theirs. Where did you get the picture for this?\u00a0 Who was the most influential person who passed this onto you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby: <\/strong>Dennis, I never heard the gospel until I was 19. I grew up in California. At about the age of 15, I started abusing alcohol\u2014got into drugs\u2014became very promiscuous \/ always looking for the next girl. My life was empty. I didn\u2019t know why I existed. I remember taking LSD and saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to go find myself.\u201d\u00a0 I was desperately looking for purpose. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t have any education. I was so uneducated I failed the ASVAB three times to get in the military to be an infantry man. In the United States Army, you needed a 28. I got a 27. I wanted to be a Marine\u2014you needed a 31. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just utterly uneducated\u2014full of guilt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I was playing baseball\u2014and it was about the only thing in my life that protected me from imploding. I was playing at a community college, and a teammate took me hear an evangelist by the name of Greg Laurie. I resonated with Greg because he used words like, \u201cDude, cool, bro, and stoked.\u201d\u00a0 He spoke in a vernacular that I could understand at that season of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bobby: <\/strong>I ended up placing my faith in Jesus. About a year-and-a-half after I got saved, I went to an AA meeting. I would go to an AA meeting on October 9, 1994. By God\u2019s grace, I did over 400 meetings in my first year of sobriety; and I just came alive. I got engaged at Saddleback Church. I was part of Celebrate Recovery program there. I wanted to witness to everything that moved. I was working at the Ritz-Carlton as a valet parker. I started getting in trouble because people started complaining about the guy who is pulling up their car and putting it on the Christian radio stations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\u00a0 So, then, I ended up having a powerful moment where I sensed the Lord calling me into fulltime ministry. Andy Stanley once said: \u201cGod gives you a vision. Then, He grows you into it.\u201d\u00a0 I needed to get educated, and it was a long time coming for me to prepare to be a pastor because this empty head needed to be filled. I had a big heart and a small head. I went off to Bible college in Conway, Arkansas. I started witnessing, on my own, to 50 to 100 people per week. I said, \u201cMy burden took me and taught me.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can remember working in Conway at Virco, as a security guard. I had nobody to share the gospel with. I started opening up the white pages and randomly calling people, asking if I could share Jesus with them. I stood up on a bench at UCA, and I would share Jesus. People just thought, \u201cThis guy is nuts\u2014he\u2019s weird.\u201d\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t trying to be like the weirdo. I was so in love with Jesus Christ\u2014and all of a sudden, that changed my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started reading\u2014not because I wanted to read\u2014but because I loved God and reading was my ticket to knowing the God I loved. I started growing, and growing, and growing. My life was transformed. Now, I\u2019ve been married for 18 years. I\u2019ve got two kids, and I go on to Dallas Theological Seminary. Then, I go and graduate with my doctorate summa cum laude. Now, I\u2019m in a Russell Group school in England. I\u2019m working on my second doctorate in moral philosophy. It\u2019s all God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And God has a plan for every listener, who is hearing this story. He wants to use you as well. It may not be the same route as He\u2019s taken Bobby, but the point is\u2014God does have a plan. He has a mission for you and an assignment for you. It may just be right there in your marriage \/ in your home\u2014raising this brood of children who will follow Christ. That is a holy assignment. The issue is\u2014you need to be helping them become followers of Christ. As Bobby Conway has written\u2014they need to be the fifth Gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, Fifth Gospel Christians are those who live it out\u2014who put the gospel on display where people see: \u201cThis makes a difference in how they live \/ it makes a difference in what they do when they mess up.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not just that they live perfectly. It\u2019s that, when they mess up\u2014they confess, they repent, they turn around, and go in a different direction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love the way Paul says it in Titus, Chapter 2, when he says that our lives are supposed to adorn the doctrine of God. That is, our life should beautify that doctrine.
