Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you ever looked at family Christmas pictures?\u2014you know, the ones that everybody sends out\u2014the picture of the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Of course.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you know some of the families that you\u2019re getting the picture from and you go\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThis looks a little too perfect!\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s one of the ways\u2014and you\u2019ve heard me talk about this on the air. You can get a perfect Christmas card picture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but you can\u2019t get a perfect family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not this side of the pearly gates.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and to get the perfect picture\u2014you usually have to shoot about 700 different shots to get everybody looking at the camera and smiling just right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We had one child\u2014who will remain anonymous\u2014the photographs were called, \u201cThe many faces of. . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026this child.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026this child.\u201d They were collectors\u2019 pieces. It was like, \u201cHow can the face or the eyes be shut like <em>that<\/em>?\u201d So, we used to offer serious bribery\u2014just flat-out unbelievable bonuses for this child to straighten up his face. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a guest with us who, I think, knows a little bit about imperfect families. Elisa Morgan joins us, here again, on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Elisa, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Thanks for having me. I\u2019ve been stifling my giggles as you have been going through that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, many of our listeners know Elisa, harkening all the way back to MOPS International, when she grew that ministry from 350 groups\u2014I didn\u2019t know this\u2014to more than 4,000 groups around the world; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Stunning; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It was a powerful season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s got a great ministry. She and her husband Evan have two children and one grandchild. She has written a book called <em>The Beauty of Perfect Christmas Card Pictures. <\/em>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Now, there you go again. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, it\u2019s called <em>The Beauty of Broken.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to go back\u2014I want to get your story because I think, a lot of times, we don\u2019t read books that really give us an authentic look at how and where someone grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And here you\u2019ve been the CEO of a major ministry that touched millions of lives\u2014certainly millions of children\u2014and you\u2019ve written a book now that takes us back into your childhood. It really begins with a conversation you had with your dad when you were five years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It does; it does. Yes, the subtitle of this book is <em>There\u2019s No Such Thing as a Perfect Family: My Story and Likely Yours Too<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you\u2019re referencing is that I come from a broken family. Many people do, but I do. When I was five years old, my dad called me into his home study. He had this big white upholstered chair; and I loved \u201cDaddy time.\u201d He beckoned me up onto his lap. He turned my little shoulders so I was eyeball to eyeball. He looked straight into my eyes and he said: \u201cElisa, I\u2019ve decided I don\u2019t love your mother anymore. We\u2019re going to get a divorce.\u201d Truly, in that moment, I felt like my family fell and broke. I wondered what I had done to break it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At five, you thought to yourself, \u201cI did this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, and you know, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s unusual as we look at some of the research with children of divorce. Typically, they do take on responsibility. We\u2019re very narcissistic and appropriately egocentric, you know, at that stage in our development. So children do think: \u201cGood is pleasurable and bad is painful. If this is painful, it\u2019s bad; and I probably had a hand in it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And did you think, at the time, \u201cThis is horrible.\u201d Or did you think, at the time, \u201cThis is just going to be different now\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> No, I thought it was horrible. I loved my daddy and I did understand enough that our family was breaking apart. My mother, and my older sister, and younger brother, and I moved across the United States from my father. That was enormous disruption and change. Now, in the 1960s\u2014maybe the year 1960 to be exact\u2014we were a divorced family. There really were <em>very few<\/em> of those. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lived in the San Francisco Bay area\u2014in a suburb. My mom drove into the city to work. We lived there for several years. Then she moved us to Texas, which was where her roots were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I remember I could go up and down any street in my neighborhood and touch every house of the kids that I knew and I went to school with and I know <em>one<\/em> other single-mom family. We were a great oddity. There was considerable shame about that, especially aided by the fact that I can remember, as a 10-\/12-year-old, waking my mom up to get her to go to work because she couldn\u2019t get herself up because she struggled with alcohol. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I had alcoholism and abandonment\u2014you know\u2014these <em>really<\/em> tough issues. And then, add to that, we had financial struggles because we didn\u2019t have enough money. We lived in an area that looked like we had enough money\u2014so there was the need to keep up the pretense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would look back now\u2014and I\u2019ve had gobs of therapy, just to be honest with all the listeners\u2014but I would look back now and say that I was an over-functioning person. I took on uber-responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the ACOA\u2014or Adult Child of an Alcoholic system\u2014I would be the hero. I thought I could fix it all. I thought it was my fault, and I thought I had better fix it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were aware of your mom\u2019s issue with alcohol at a young age\u2014eight, nine, and ten. How did you\u2014do you remember how you became aware?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It was such a part of the fiber and the fabric of our days and nights. My mom would sit on the end of the couch in our family room with her high ball of Scotch and water\u2014you know, just a little bit. She would have her cigarette trailing up. She was always\u2014I want to be clear here\u2014she was loving, she was creative, she was a brilliant woman; but she was a woman not made for her time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother was a radio talent \/ she was a television person. When she met and married my father, she retired from all of that in the 1950s and really lost herself. Then, as a divorcee, I think she carried around a giant stigma of failure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was obvious that she had a problem with drinking. She would pinball down the hall late at night\u2014I could hear her going against the walls to her room. And, again, she couldn\u2019t get up in the morning. Her alarm would blare, waking me up. I would go in the kitchen\u2014and grab some coke and a couple of chocolate chip cookies and take them into the bedroom\u2014and try to get her to wake up because she needed to go to work because we needed the paycheck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How else did you absorb that divorce and, really, describe kind of what you were like in grade school, growing up, after your parents\u2019 split.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> I was a very good girl. I did everything right\u2014I cleaned the house \/ I took care of the pets. I realized, not long ago\u2014we had a black cocker spaniel. I realized, not long ago, that when she was ill\u2014and we didn\u2019t know it\u2014I guess she had cancer \/ we found out\u2014but when she was ill, she came into <em>my<\/em> room and got up on <em>my<\/em> bed and slept at <em>my<\/em> feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m like 12\/13. She was wheezing. I went in to tell my mom. My mom said, \u201cOh, she must not be well.\u201d Then mother took her to the vet and found out, indeed, she was very ill. I look at that\u2014and really this just hit me a few years ago: \u201cOh, my gosh! Even my <em>dog<\/em> knew that I was the one to come to when she was sick. I was the one who would listen. I was the one who would respond.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your book is about families that are broken. Divorce is not the only way families get broken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, in your book, you make it clear that intact families are broken families; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Every one of us ends up making a broken family in one way or another because we\u2019re all broken. As I go on in my book and talk about my original family being a broken family, I decided I was going to create a perfectly intact second family\u2014bing!\u2014it was going to be awesome!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met my husband in seminary. We pledged we\u2019d never use the word divorce. But, guess what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the years that followed, our own family fell and broke\u2014not through divorce\u2014but through other things. So, now I say, \u201cI come from a broken family, and I still come from a broken family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me go back to your childhood. Your ongoing relationship with your dad\u2014did you have contact with him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> We saw our dad about once \/ maybe twice a year. He lived thousands of miles away from us. He was a professional\u2014very responsible man \/ a CEO of a large corporation. He would come to see us, and he would bring matching dresses for my older sister and myself. We would put them on with our black patent leather shoes and go out to some steakhouse and saw at steaks. I remember trying to think of grown-up things to talk about with him to keep him interested in me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, honestly, some of the hardest things happened when I was a teenager. I remember my dad saying to me, \u201cAs long as I have financial responsibility for you, I\u2019m not going to be able to love you.\u201d Wow! What does a kid do with that?\u2014because I\u2019m 15\/16 years old\u2014of course, you have financial responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat separated us for years! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was in seminary myself\u2014and again working on understanding how God, as a Father, could love me when my earthly father had abandoned me\u2014I really felt drawn to try and reestablish a relationship with my dad. He wasn\u2019t financially responsible for me, at that time. I called him and asked if we could meet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe actually met for a weekend, where he was having a business trip. I was with him maybe for maybe 30 minutes, and I got really uncomfortable. I thought, \u201cSurely he\u2019s bored with me.\u201d You know, \u201cI haven\u2019t seen him more than once a year for 20 years. Thirty minutes is probably plenty for him.\u201d I excused myself and I was going back to my hotel room. I ran into my step-mother. She said, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you with your dad?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, I figured he was done with me.\u201d She said, \u201cNo, Elisa, he set aside the whole weekend to be with you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went back to my room. I picked up my Bible, where I\u2019d been reading it, because I was undone by this. I didn\u2019t know how to pull myself together enough to trust this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had been reading in 1 John, and I went there. I read in 1 John 4:18 that there is \u201cno fear in love but perfect love casts out fear because fear has to do with punishment.\u201d Then it went on to talk about how Jesus had endured any punishment we could ever imagine for us on the cross. I realized I was afraid of the potential punishment that my father would reject me again. I realized God was assuring me that he didn\u2019t have that power\u2014that God had bought complete acceptance for me through His Son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a stepping stone for me. Over the years, I continued to be able to love\u2014learn to love my dad. You know what? I think he loved me too. When I was in my early 30s, I spent Christmas\u2014one particular Christmas season\u2014close with him. Our family was there. We had finished dinner. My husband and kids left and his wife left, and it was just my dad and I at the table. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked across the table at me. He said, \u201cElisa, I\u2019m so sorry that money was always more important than you.\u201d I know a lot of people don\u2019t get that kind of apology, and I was very tempted to just sweep it off the table like bread crumbs because it made me uncomfortable. I felt God just gently say: \u201cWait! You\u2019ve been waiting all of your life to hear these words. Receive them.\u201d And I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at my dad and I said, \u201cThank you.\u201d Then I said, \u201cI\u2019m hopeful for what we can still have.\u201d We did have some years. It wasn\u2019t perfect, but I grew to the place where risking being in an ongoing relationship made sense to me. It grew me, and it grew him. It was never like perfect and\u2014you know, whatever Christmas card you might want to have as your picture\u2014but it was real, and it mattered. I knew I got what he could give.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was another, I guess, player in this drama that was taking place in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA scene that you paint really is etched in my mind of you, as a little girl, waiting for your dad to come on those visits to take you out to dinner\u2014and you being at the window, looking out at his Cadillac pulling up\u2014and also having another woman in the car. It was his new wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was your relationship like with your step-mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> My step-mom came into my dad\u2019s life really quickly. They were married the second the divorce was final pretty much. So, I honestly resented her. I mean, I try to say this nicely in the book, but I pretty much just bluntly said that I hated her. I mean, she took my daddy away\u2014it felt to me like. She hurt my mom, and my dad hurt my mom. In many ways, I felt like they formed this brokenness in our world\u2014so I resented her for <em>many<\/em> years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw her maybe three times or so as a child\u2014really, rarely did I see her\u2014but, as a young adult, I did get to know her. I actually grew to love her. It took a while to understand that\u2014as I became an adult\u2014that adults can fall in love, and that when marriages dissolve, new love can grow. It took me a long time to understand that and not be bitter about it. I grew to love her\u2014but it wasn\u2019t easy. It was always something kind of like a dark cloud in Winnie the Pooh and the honey pot. It would hang over me. When I was with her, it was this dark cloud of: \u201cWow! How did you get into my life? How did this happen again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re really talking about one of the major chapters in your book, which is \u201cForgiveness.\u201d One of the things that you say, I think, is clearly taught in the Scripture\u2014Ephesians 4 says, \u201cForgiving one another just as God in Christ has forgiven you.\u201d You actually make the statement that you can\u2019t give what you haven\u2019t received. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou learned that in some very fresh ways as you went through the process of forgiving your dad, forgiving your mom, and ultimately forgiving your step-mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Exactly. Forgiveness, I think, is a two-way street. There are two processes, and I think they\u2019re a one\/two. We\u2019ve got to get them right in this order. We have to receive forgiveness\u2014we have to get it\u2014before we can give forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t go any other way. For the longest time, I thought: \u201cWell, what do I have to be forgiven for? Really! I mean, I was a kid. I didn\u2019t break my family,\u201d\u2014I thought I did, but I didn\u2019t\u2014as I grew up, I understood that wasn\u2019t within my power. \u201cWhat do I have to be forgiven for? I was just being a child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, as I really looked honestly, I realized: \u201cOh, how about hatred? How about resentment? How about selfishness? How about\u2026\u201d There were plenty of things. As God began to gently show me that I had almost a self-righteous \/ even proud disposition about being the good girl\u2014that was shutting me off from what He wanted to give me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBrennan Manning says beautifully, \u201cIf we just pretend like we\u2019re sinful, then we can only pretend like we\u2019re forgiven.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> And God had to lead me to see: \u201cYou know what? You really have some issues in your life, too, Elisa.\u201d As I began to be able to be open to what my issues were\u2014and see them for what they were and ask God to forgive <em>me<\/em>\u2014then I began to be able to forgive my mom, my dad, my step-mother\u2014each person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And one of the things you illustrate, frankly, in a pretty raw way is that you can go through this process of giving up the right to punish the person you\u2019ve been embittered toward or been full of hate toward\u2014you can give up the right to punish and say: \u201cOkay, God, You\u2019ve forgiven me. I must forgive them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you\u2019re still in a relationship with an imperfect person who\u2019s going to hurt you again. Even when they die, they can hurt you. You tell the story, which I have to say I think it\u2019s remarkable of how both your dad and your step-mom ended up dividing their estates among their living relatives and their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, they ranked us. Actually, my father ranked us in his will. He ranked, in the order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 children. And it was very clear: \u201cThis is your ranking because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t birth order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> \u2014it wasn\u2019t birth order.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And different kids got different amounts, based on their ranking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes. You knew your ranking by the amount you got, basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s all in print, right in front of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because that\u2019s the way it happens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It is. I had never heard of such a thing; but, you know, we didn\u2019t talk about this very much either. It\u2019s not like everybody runs around sharing this stuff. As we began to see this, it was very uncomfortable. It was very uncomfortable to be a person below and it was uncomfortable to be a person \/ or a child ranked above. I was in one of those situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember talking to my step-mother, after my dad had passed, about \u201cWhy did he do this?!\u201d She was embarrassed about it, and she didn\u2019t really seem to think it was fair either. What you\u2019re referring to, Dennis, as we\u2019re talking about this ongoing relationship, where we have to continue to apply what God\u2019s teaching us\u2014when she passed away, she did the same thing!\u2014but in a different order. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. Explain to them what she did. You said she had 900 relatives when she died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, 942.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Which really wasn\u2019t accurate; but your point was that she didn\u2019t just give you a slice of her inheritance\u2014she gave you a fraction of a part of a slice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, yes. What she did was say, \u201cYou get one-half of one unit\u201d kind of a thing. I came away thinking, \u201cI\u2019m a speck!\u201d So here this other person had two shares or this person had fifty shares. I got one-half of one share \/ of one unit. \u201cWait a minute! I\u2019m just like a gnat!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here you are thrown back thinking, \u201cEven in death\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Even in death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201c\u2014you have to forgive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> And God led me right back to it. I mean, this is what I said\u2014you know, I\u2019m pretty honest in this book: \u201cI\u2019ve got more work to do here! I\u2019m not done. I\u2019m mad at her still. I\u2019m angry!\u201d I was writing this book\u2014and it had been years since she had passed\u2014and I realized the resentment was bubbling up. I\u2019m still allowing myself to be measured and evaluated by a parent or step-parent\u2019s ranking. That\u2019s not truth, but it still gets me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, our value needs to be based right here in what this book\u2014the Bible\u2014says about us and about who we are, if we have a relationship in Jesus Christ. To that person today, who\u2019s listening\u2014who has felt the rage begin to bubble up in their soul as they\u2019ve listened to this broadcast\u2014may, first of all, may need to step back and go: \u201cAm I forgiven? Have I admitted that I need a Savior and that, in order to forgive, I need to experience the ultimate forgiveness?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you\u2019ve got to start\u2014right there. But then, perhaps, there is a person, who is listening, who needs to do some business with God and, ultimately, lay aside the right to punish\u2014maybe it\u2019s a dead parent; maybe it\u2019s a living parent; maybe it\u2019s one you continue to clash with. I get it. I understand it. We\u2019re all broken. If you\u2019re going to have healthy relationships, ultimately, you have to practice healthy forgiveness that gives up that right to punish the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And somewhere in that process, you have to come to grips with the fact that God is good \/ God is in control. God does love you, and even things that hurt and feel bad have a divine purpose in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are lessons to be learned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the fact that you were willing, here today and in the book, to pull back the curtain and share from the reality of your own life and not try to pretty it up for everybody\u2014that is a ministry to all of us. I keep coming back to what I\u2019ve heard Pastor Matt Chandler say in Dallas, when he says: \u201cIt\u2019s okay not to be okay in church. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you ever looked at family Christmas pictures?\u2014you know, the ones that everybody sends out\u2014the picture of the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Of course.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you know some of the families that you\u2019re getting the picture from and you go\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThis looks a little too perfect!\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s one of the ways\u2014and you\u2019ve heard me talk about this on the air. You can get a perfect Christmas card picture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but you can\u2019t get a perfect family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not this side of the pearly gates.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and to get the perfect picture\u2014you usually have to shoot about 700 different shots to get everybody looking at the camera and smiling just right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We had one child\u2014who will remain anonymous\u2014the photographs were called, \u201cThe many faces of. . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026this child.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026this child.\u201d They were collectors\u2019 pieces. It was like, \u201cHow can the face or the eyes be shut like <em>that<\/em>?\u201d So, we used to offer serious bribery\u2014just flat-out unbelievable bonuses for this child to straighten up his face. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a guest with us who, I think, knows a little bit about imperfect families. Elisa Morgan joins us, here again, on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Elisa, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Thanks for having me. I\u2019ve been stifling my giggles as you have been going through that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, many of our listeners know Elisa, harkening all the way back to MOPS International, when she grew that ministry from 350 groups\u2014I didn\u2019t know this\u2014to more than 4,000 groups around the world; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Stunning; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It was a powerful season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s got a great ministry. She and her husband Evan have two children and one grandchild. She has written a book called <em>The Beauty of Perfect Christmas Card Pictures. <\/em>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Now, there you go again. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, it\u2019s called <em>The Beauty of Broken.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to go back\u2014I want to get your story because I think, a lot of times, we don\u2019t read books that really give us an authentic look at how and where someone grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And here you\u2019ve been the CEO of a major ministry that touched millions of lives\u2014certainly millions of children\u2014and you\u2019ve written a book now that takes us back into your childhood. It really begins with a conversation you had with your dad when you were five years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It does; it does. Yes, the subtitle of this book is <em>There\u2019s No Such Thing as a Perfect Family: My Story and Likely Yours Too<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you\u2019re referencing is that I come from a broken family. Many people do, but I do. When I was five years old, my dad called me into his home study. He had this big white upholstered chair; and I loved \u201cDaddy time.\u201d He beckoned me up onto his lap. He turned my little shoulders so I was eyeball to eyeball. He looked straight into my eyes and he said: \u201cElisa, I\u2019ve decided I don\u2019t love your mother anymore. We\u2019re going to get a divorce.\u201d Truly, in that moment, I felt like my family fell and broke. I wondered what I had done to break it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At five, you thought to yourself, \u201cI did this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, and you know, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s unusual as we look at some of the research with children of divorce. Typically, they do take on responsibility. We\u2019re very narcissistic and appropriately egocentric, you know, at that stage in our development. So children do think: \u201cGood is pleasurable and bad is painful. If this is painful, it\u2019s bad; and I probably had a hand in it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And did you think, at the time, \u201cThis is horrible.\u201d Or did you think, at the time, \u201cThis is just going to be different now\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> No, I thought it was horrible. I loved my daddy and I did understand enough that our family was breaking apart. My mother, and my older sister, and younger brother, and I moved across the United States from my father. That was enormous disruption and change. Now, in the 1960s\u2014maybe the year 1960 to be exact\u2014we were a divorced family. There really were <em>very few<\/em> of those. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lived in the San Francisco Bay area\u2014in a suburb. My mom drove into the city to work. We lived there for several years. Then she moved us to Texas, which was where her roots were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I remember I could go up and down any street in my neighborhood and touch every house of the kids that I knew and I went to school with and I know <em>one<\/em> other single-mom family. We were a great oddity. There was considerable shame about that, especially aided by the fact that I can remember, as a 10-\/12-year-old, waking my mom up to get her to go to work because she couldn\u2019t get herself up because she struggled with alcohol. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I had alcoholism and abandonment\u2014you know\u2014these <em>really<\/em> tough issues. And then, add to that, we had financial struggles because we didn\u2019t have enough money. We lived in an area that looked like we had enough money\u2014so there was the need to keep up the pretense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would look back now\u2014and I\u2019ve had gobs of therapy, just to be honest with all the listeners\u2014but I would look back now and say that I was an over-functioning person. I took on uber-responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the ACOA\u2014or Adult Child of an Alcoholic system\u2014I would be the hero. I thought I could fix it all. I thought it was my fault, and I thought I had better fix it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were aware of your mom\u2019s issue with alcohol at a young age\u2014eight, nine, and ten. How did you\u2014do you remember how you became aware?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It was such a part of the fiber and the fabric of our days and nights. My mom would sit on the end of the couch in our family room with her high ball of Scotch and water\u2014you know, just a little bit. She would have her cigarette trailing up. She was always\u2014I want to be clear here\u2014she was loving, she was creative, she was a brilliant woman; but she was a woman not made for her time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mother was a radio talent \/ she was a television person. When she met and married my father, she retired from all of that in the 1950s and really lost herself. Then, as a divorcee, I think she carried around a giant stigma of failure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was obvious that she had a problem with drinking. She would pinball down the hall late at night\u2014I could hear her going against the walls to her room. And, again, she couldn\u2019t get up in the morning. Her alarm would blare, waking me up. I would go in the kitchen\u2014and grab some coke and a couple of chocolate chip cookies and take them into the bedroom\u2014and try to get her to wake up because she needed to go to work because we needed the paycheck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How else did you absorb that divorce and, really, describe kind of what you were like in grade school, growing up, after your parents\u2019 split.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> I was a very good girl. I did everything right\u2014I cleaned the house \/ I took care of the pets. I realized, not long ago\u2014we had a black cocker spaniel. I realized, not long ago, that when she was ill\u2014and we didn\u2019t know it\u2014I guess she had cancer \/ we found out\u2014but when she was ill, she came into <em>my<\/em> room and got up on <em>my<\/em> bed and slept at <em>my<\/em> feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m like 12\/13. She was wheezing. I went in to tell my mom. My mom said, \u201cOh, she must not be well.\u201d Then mother took her to the vet and found out, indeed, she was very ill. I look at that\u2014and really this just hit me a few years ago: \u201cOh, my gosh! Even my <em>dog<\/em> knew that I was the one to come to when she was sick. I was the one who would listen. I was the one who would respond.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your book is about families that are broken. Divorce is not the only way families get broken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, in your book, you make it clear that intact families are broken families; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Every one of us ends up making a broken family in one way or another because we\u2019re all broken. As I go on in my book and talk about my original family being a broken family, I decided I was going to create a perfectly intact second family\u2014bing!\u2014it was going to be awesome!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met my husband in seminary. We pledged we\u2019d never use the word divorce. But, guess what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the years that followed, our own family fell and broke\u2014not through divorce\u2014but through other things. So, now I say, \u201cI come from a broken family, and I still come from a broken family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me go back to your childhood. Your ongoing relationship with your dad\u2014did you have contact with him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> We saw our dad about once \/ maybe twice a year. He lived thousands of miles away from us. He was a professional\u2014very responsible man \/ a CEO of a large corporation. He would come to see us, and he would bring matching dresses for my older sister and myself. We would put them on with our black patent leather shoes and go out to some steakhouse and saw at steaks. I remember trying to think of grown-up things to talk about with him to keep him interested in me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, honestly, some of the hardest things happened when I was a teenager. I remember my dad saying to me, \u201cAs long as I have financial responsibility for you, I\u2019m not going to be able to love you.\u201d Wow! What does a kid do with that?\u2014because I\u2019m 15\/16 years old\u2014of course, you have financial responsibility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat separated us for years! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was in seminary myself\u2014and again working on understanding how God, as a Father, could love me when my earthly father had abandoned me\u2014I really felt drawn to try and reestablish a relationship with my dad. He wasn\u2019t financially responsible for me, at that time. I called him and asked if we could meet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe actually met for a weekend, where he was having a business trip. I was with him maybe for maybe 30 minutes, and I got really uncomfortable. I thought, \u201cSurely he\u2019s bored with me.\u201d You know, \u201cI haven\u2019t seen him more than once a year for 20 years. Thirty minutes is probably plenty for him.\u201d I excused myself and I was going back to my hotel room. I ran into my step-mother. She said, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you with your dad?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, I figured he was done with me.\u201d She said, \u201cNo, Elisa, he set aside the whole weekend to be with you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went back to my room. I picked up my Bible, where I\u2019d been reading it, because I was undone by this. I didn\u2019t know how to pull myself together enough to trust this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had been reading in 1 John, and I went there. I read in 1 John 4:18 that there is \u201cno fear in love but perfect love casts out fear because fear has to do with punishment.\u201d Then it went on to talk about how Jesus had endured any punishment we could ever imagine for us on the cross. I realized I was afraid of the potential punishment that my father would reject me again. I realized God was assuring me that he didn\u2019t have that power\u2014that God had bought complete acceptance for me through His Son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a stepping stone for me. Over the years, I continued to be able to love\u2014learn to love my dad. You know what? I think he loved me too. When I was in my early 30s, I spent Christmas\u2014one particular Christmas season\u2014close with him. Our family was there. We had finished dinner. My husband and kids left and his wife left, and it was just my dad and I at the table. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe looked across the table at me. He said, \u201cElisa, I\u2019m so sorry that money was always more important than you.\u201d I know a lot of people don\u2019t get that kind of apology, and I was very tempted to just sweep it off the table like bread crumbs because it made me uncomfortable. I felt God just gently say: \u201cWait! You\u2019ve been waiting all of your life to hear these words. Receive them.\u201d And I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at my dad and I said, \u201cThank you.\u201d Then I said, \u201cI\u2019m hopeful for what we can still have.\u201d We did have some years. It wasn\u2019t perfect, but I grew to the place where risking being in an ongoing relationship made sense to me. It grew me, and it grew him. It was never like perfect and\u2014you know, whatever Christmas card you might want to have as your picture\u2014but it was real, and it mattered. I knew I got what he could give.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was another, I guess, player in this drama that was taking place in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA scene that you paint really is etched in my mind of you, as a little girl, waiting for your dad to come on those visits to take you out to dinner\u2014and you being at the window, looking out at his Cadillac pulling up\u2014and also having another woman in the car. It was his new wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was your relationship like with your step-mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> My step-mom came into my dad\u2019s life really quickly. They were married the second the divorce was final pretty much. So, I honestly resented her. I mean, I try to say this nicely in the book, but I pretty much just bluntly said that I hated her. I mean, she took my daddy away\u2014it felt to me like. She hurt my mom, and my dad hurt my mom. In many ways, I felt like they formed this brokenness in our world\u2014so I resented her for <em>many<\/em> years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw her maybe three times or so as a child\u2014really, rarely did I see her\u2014but, as a young adult, I did get to know her. I actually grew to love her. It took a while to understand that\u2014as I became an adult\u2014that adults can fall in love, and that when marriages dissolve, new love can grow. It took me a long time to understand that and not be bitter about it. I grew to love her\u2014but it wasn\u2019t easy. It was always something kind of like a dark cloud in Winnie the Pooh and the honey pot. It would hang over me. When I was with her, it was this dark cloud of: \u201cWow! How did you get into my life? How did this happen again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re really talking about one of the major chapters in your book, which is \u201cForgiveness.\u201d One of the things that you say, I think, is clearly taught in the Scripture\u2014Ephesians 4 says, \u201cForgiving one another just as God in Christ has forgiven you.\u201d You actually make the statement that you can\u2019t give what you haven\u2019t received. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou learned that in some very fresh ways as you went through the process of forgiving your dad, forgiving your mom, and ultimately forgiving your step-mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Exactly. Forgiveness, I think, is a two-way street. There are two processes, and I think they\u2019re a one\/two. We\u2019ve got to get them right in this order. We have to receive forgiveness\u2014we have to get it\u2014before we can give forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t go any other way. For the longest time, I thought: \u201cWell, what do I have to be forgiven for? Really! I mean, I was a kid. I didn\u2019t break my family,\u201d\u2014I thought I did, but I didn\u2019t\u2014as I grew up, I understood that wasn\u2019t within my power. \u201cWhat do I have to be forgiven for? I was just being a child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, as I really looked honestly, I realized: \u201cOh, how about hatred? How about resentment? How about selfishness? How about\u2026\u201d There were plenty of things. As God began to gently show me that I had almost a self-righteous \/ even proud disposition about being the good girl\u2014that was shutting me off from what He wanted to give me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBrennan Manning says beautifully, \u201cIf we just pretend like we\u2019re sinful, then we can only pretend like we\u2019re forgiven.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> And God had to lead me to see: \u201cYou know what? You really have some issues in your life, too, Elisa.\u201d As I began to be able to be open to what my issues were\u2014and see them for what they were and ask God to forgive <em>me<\/em>\u2014then I began to be able to forgive my mom, my dad, my step-mother\u2014each person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And one of the things you illustrate, frankly, in a pretty raw way is that you can go through this process of giving up the right to punish the person you\u2019ve been embittered toward or been full of hate toward\u2014you can give up the right to punish and say: \u201cOkay, God, You\u2019ve forgiven me. I must forgive them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you\u2019re still in a relationship with an imperfect person who\u2019s going to hurt you again. Even when they die, they can hurt you. You tell the story, which I have to say I think it\u2019s remarkable of how both your dad and your step-mom ended up dividing their estates among their living relatives and their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, they ranked us. Actually, my father ranked us in his will. He ranked, in the order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 children. And it was very clear: \u201cThis is your ranking because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t birth order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> \u2014it wasn\u2019t birth order.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And different kids got different amounts, based on their ranking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes. You knew your ranking by the amount you got, basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s all in print, right in front of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because that\u2019s the way it happens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> It is. I had never heard of such a thing; but, you know, we didn\u2019t talk about this very much either. It\u2019s not like everybody runs around sharing this stuff. As we began to see this, it was very uncomfortable. It was very uncomfortable to be a person below and it was uncomfortable to be a person \/ or a child ranked above. I was in one of those situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember talking to my step-mother, after my dad had passed, about \u201cWhy did he do this?!\u201d She was embarrassed about it, and she didn\u2019t really seem to think it was fair either. What you\u2019re referring to, Dennis, as we\u2019re talking about this ongoing relationship, where we have to continue to apply what God\u2019s teaching us\u2014when she passed away, she did the same thing!\u2014but in a different order. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. Explain to them what she did. You said she had 900 relatives when she died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, 942.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Which really wasn\u2019t accurate; but your point was that she didn\u2019t just give you a slice of her inheritance\u2014she gave you a fraction of a part of a slice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Yes, yes. What she did was say, \u201cYou get one-half of one unit\u201d kind of a thing. I came away thinking, \u201cI\u2019m a speck!\u201d So here this other person had two shares or this person had fifty shares. I got one-half of one share \/ of one unit. \u201cWait a minute! I\u2019m just like a gnat!\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here you are thrown back thinking, \u201cEven in death\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> Even in death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201c\u2014you have to forgive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisa:<\/strong> And God led me right back to it. I mean, this is what I said\u2014you know, I\u2019m pretty honest in this book: \u201cI\u2019ve got more work to do here! I\u2019m not done. I\u2019m mad at her still. I\u2019m angry!\u201d I was writing this book\u2014and it had been years since she had passed\u2014and I realized the resentment was bubbling up. I\u2019m still allowing myself to be measured and evaluated by a parent or step-parent\u2019s ranking. That\u2019s not truth, but it still gets me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, our value needs to be based right here in what this book\u2014the Bible\u2014says about us and about who we are, if we have a relationship in Jesus Christ. To that person today, who\u2019s listening\u2014who has felt the rage begin to bubble up in their soul as they\u2019ve listened to this broadcast\u2014may, first of all, may need to step back and go: \u201cAm I forgiven? Have I admitted that I need a Savior and that, in order to forgive, I need to experience the ultimate forgiveness?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you\u2019ve got to start\u2014right there. But then, perhaps, there is a person, who is listening, who needs to do some business with God and, ultimately, lay aside the right to punish\u2014maybe it\u2019s a dead parent; maybe it\u2019s a living parent; maybe it\u2019s one you continue to clash with. I get it. I understand it. We\u2019re all broken. If you\u2019re going to have healthy relationships, ultimately, you have to practice healthy forgiveness that gives up that right to punish the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And somewhere in that process, you have to come to grips with the fact that God is good \/ God is in control. God does love you, and even things that hurt and feel bad have a divine purpose in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are lessons to be learned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the fact that you were willing, here today and in the book, to pull back the curtain and share from the reality of your own life and not try to pretty it up for everybody\u2014that is a ministry to all of us. I keep coming back to what I\u2019ve heard Pastor Matt Chandler say in Dallas, when he says: \u201cIt\u2019s okay not to be okay in church.
