We have one in our family we are going to talk about today that every family can adapt and use in their family in a meaningful way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, what we are going to do is go back and hear how you guys celebrated Thanksgiving\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014back when the kids were still at home\u2014because we came across a <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> program\u2014this is from the year, 2000.\u00a0 Now, I remember when 2000 sounded like it was out there in the future\u2014now, it\u2019s way, way back there; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was Y2K.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was getting ready to call that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were getting ready to fire up the generator\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014for Y2K.\u00a0 But we were talking about how you guys celebrate Thanksgiving and giving families a glimpse inside your home.\u00a0 There is a lot that is still the same at your house\u2014a lot of traditions that remain\u2014but a few things that have changed over the years.\u00a0 You\u2019ve added some things to the Thanksgiving celebration; haven\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 We mostly added people.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, really, the tradition has not changed.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the number of seats around the table.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s mostly people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many tables it took on our deck, here a couple of Thanksgivings ago, where we read the Thanksgiving story that Barbara has written in her book, <em>Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember<\/em>, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the parents conveniently all collected at one end of the table and put Barbara and me down with all the children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the grandchildren.\u00a0 Here I was\u2014attempting to read\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were standing up and walking around to keep their attention so they would hear a few words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was using every professional skill I have ever developed around speaking to keep my grandkids\u2019 attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how long did that last?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It didn\u2019t work\u2014maybe, five minutes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the point is\u2014we all wrote down on cards\u2014and you\u2019ll hear about this in a moment\u2014what we were thankful about during the past 12 months.\u00a0 I think, Bob, that spiritual discipline ought to be a part of every family, every Thanksgiving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we\u2019re really hoping that families will stop to consider that the day can be about more than just food and football. You can have some spiritual significance on that day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Barbara, folks ought to go to your website at EverThineHome.com\u2014it\u2019s EverThineHome.com\u2014because you\u2019ve been working on resources\u2014home decorations\u2014things that families can use that will make the holiday more meaningful.\u00a0 But we thought it would be fun for folks to kind of jump back in time when you only had one grandchild, only one child who was married\u2014you still had kids at home\u2014and hear how you handled Thanksgiving back then. So, this is from 14 years ago.\u00a0 This is our conversation about Thanksgiving back with Dennis and Barbara.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Aired]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re a couple of weeks away from celebrating Thanksgiving. We wanted to take a few days, here on the broadcast, just to encourage parents to recapture this holiday and make it a significant day in the life of your family and use it for spiritual purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In fact, Bob, I\u2019m going to change your wording there a bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to say, \u201cNo, we want to <em>challenge<\/em> parents\u2014just challenge parents and grandparents alike\u2014to take back this holiday for your family for Jesus Christ.\u201d This holiday is one about praise to God \/ thanksgiving to God\u2014reflecting upon what He has done. There\u2019s a biblical principle that\u2019s found in Psalm 78, Psalm 103, and Psalm 106.\u00a0 It\u2019s called the Landmark Principle or the Milestone Principle:\u00a0 \u201cGod has made His works to be remembered so that we might remember what He\u2019s done so that we might praise Him for who He is and so that we might trust Him for the problems that we\u2019re facing today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we forget what God has done and we don\u2019t give thanks to Him for what He\u2019s done, then, we forget to trust Him today.\u00a0 Thanksgiving <em>ought<\/em> to be a day that rivets us back to our Creator. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read Psalm 103 here quickly.\u00a0 \u201cBless the Lord, oh, my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.\u00a0 Bless the Lord, oh, my soul, and forget none of His benefits.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving and the word, \u201cthanks,\u201d\u2014both have within them the idea that they need an object.\u00a0 If you give thanks for your food before you eat it over a meal, you\u2019re praying to God.\u00a0 If you thank someone, you\u2019re taking an attitude of gratitude to that person\u2014expressing it.\u00a0 It\u2019s acknowledging that which you feel in your heart and you want to confess to the other person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what Thanksgiving is all about\u2014is getting our eyes off the horizontal\u2014 it\u2019s getting our eyes off of ourselves; and it\u2019s focusing on God and saying, \u201cThank you, God, for our spiritual roots.\u00a0 Thank you for the Pilgrims who gave their lives and who took a great spiritual risk to establish this nation and give us the spiritual freedom that we enjoy today.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were many hardships suffered by the Pilgrims.\u00a0 In fact, it might seem incongruous to gather together and give thanks to God when you consider some of what was suffered onboard the ship\u2014as people died \/ as children died through long, hard winters\u2014the same kind of situation.\u00a0 And yet, the Pilgrims understood that we are to give thanks in <em>all things<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 In everything.\u00a0 Yes, they endured an enormous number of trials because there were so, so many of them who died through, as you said, the process of sailing to the New World. But those first few years they lived in very desperate conditions, and many, many of them died.\u00a0 The ones who didn\u2019t die were sick, and they were worn out for caring for the others.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t have good shelter.\u00a0 They had very little food.\u00a0 All of that was a huge sacrifice because they were willing to stake their lives on religious freedom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we bring those things to mind with our children \/ as we reflect back on the Thanksgiving story, they can see the parallels with what we ought to be thankful for today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things I\u2019m grateful to Barbara for is bringing history alive in our family.\u00a0 As Barbara was talking about\u2014the trip over on the <em>Mayflower<\/em>\u2014I quickly opened to one of the devotionals around Thanksgiving. Just listen to this:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the journey grew long, the Pilgrims became weary with many suffering from seasickness.\u00a0 Oftentimes, they were at odds with the strangers, those passengers who were not Pilgrims.\u00a0 All 102 passengers shared cramped quarters in the ship\u2019s cabin\u2014which was about the size of a volleyball court\u201d\u2014102 people!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn a few sunny days, the children might have been allowed to play on the deck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the older children would entertain the younger ones, reading them stories, playing games, and working puzzles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight!\u2014for how many weeks?\u00a0 All of a sudden, that story of the Pilgrims, coming over, has flesh and blood wrapped around it.\u00a0 These are families\u2014these are moms and dads who were sick in the hold of a ship, who risked their lives to establish this nation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read you this one:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDuring one storm, a man named John Howland began to panic.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t stand another minute in the damp, crowded cabin.\u00a0 He desperately wanted to go above deck to get some fresh air, but the captain had forbidden anyone to leave the cabin because it was too dangerous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut John felt as though he would suffocate if he stayed.\u00a0 So, he disobediently climbed the stairs and went out on the wet, slippery deck.\u00a0 That was a big mistake.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe huge waves tossed the little ship about so violently that John was thrown into the raging sea and nearly drowned.\u00a0 After he was miraculously saved, John never disobeyed the captain\u2019s orders again.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is a great story to read to your children because it illustrates the whole principle of obedience, and why we have rules, and why we expect the things we do out of our kids.\u00a0 My kids have never forgotten it.\u00a0 Every time I read that part of the story, they remember that vividly because they can so relate to that passenger who just thought he had to disobey.\u00a0 It was more important to get out on the deck than to obey.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anybody, who has ever ridden on a roller coaster, might have some idea of what it must have been like.\u00a0 The kids had to be screaming\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the parents had to think: \u201cThis is it for us.\u00a0 We could die, right here at sea.\u00a0 Did we really do the right thing in leaving England?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I mean, think about the questions we ask ourselves: \u201cGosh, I wonder if I did the right thing by putting my child in this school,\u201d or \u201c\u2026letting him play with that friend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you think about what they had to question, being out on that ship\u2014I can\u2019t imagine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me continue to read.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDuring another storm, rough waves caused the ship to sway so far over on its side\u2014[Picture that]\u2014that some of the passengers worried that it might turn over.\u00a0 They were very afraid. [Understatement]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuddenly, a loud, terrifying noise rumbled through the ship.\u00a0 The beam that supported the main mast had cracked and was in danger of collapsing at any minute.\u00a0 As the Pilgrims prayed to God for help, William Brewster remembered that he had packed a large iron screw for his printing press.\u00a0 The crew hauled it into place and began to crank\u2014it worked.\u00a0 The screw raised the beam back into its original position.\u00a0 Everyone, including the sailors, thanked God for His protection.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many lessons of faith for our children\u2014for them to learn from these men and women who had to trust God in the midst of very real, frightening circumstances, where they could have lost their lives and their children\u2019s lives as well.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s helpful to paint those pictures vividly for them, and take them to those scenes, and then interact around it. Let them recall how this nation was formed at great cost and at great price and sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You use these stories and these spiritual lessons as a part of what you do in celebrating Thanksgiving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara\u2014when we first started doing this\u2014would read for about an hour \/\u00a0 hour and 15 minutes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t exaggerate.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two hours? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not over an hour\u2014but I agree it was lengthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have to waken him during the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we, every once in a while, would stop and go: \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll take a break.\u00a0 Let\u2019s do this or do that.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I\u2019d pick back up again.\u00a0 I usually never ended up eating, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She had all these\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014there were just too many good things\u2014to leave out!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, they were great stories!\u00a0 There were all these little snapshots of stories that needed to be told; you know?\u00a0 Squanto\u2014or whatever his name was\u2014the Indian who had been trained in England, who spoke English\u2014and how he was the key to their survival.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and you have a captive audience.\u00a0 I mean, how often do you get everybody listening at one time?\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve got to take advantage of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s because you\u2019re holding the turkey hostage until\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, you\u2019re holding the Company French Toast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s how we do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s how we do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Somebody else might do the turkey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, really, what\u2019s become the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving celebration for you has been to encourage your children to write down things for which they are thankful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you shared some of the things they wrote when they were younger; but you said, as they got older, some of that has become richer and even more meaningful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Well, after we read the story, which sets the context for them and being thankful, it\u2019s much easier for them to be thankful after they\u2019ve heard what the Pilgrims went through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have everyone write five things that they\u2019re thankful for.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1997, our son, Benjamin, spent a year in Estonia\u2014overseas.\u00a0 About a month before Thanksgiving, I packed up a little Thanksgiving goody box for him and sent it. I included a card, just like the ones we were going to have on Thanksgiving Day.\u00a0 When he came home from Estonia, at the end of the year, he brought his card\u2014I think we probably called him that day, and he may have read it to us\u2014but anyway, this is the card he wrote while he was in Estonia.\u00a0 He was\u2014what?\u201421 years old or something?\u00a0 He was a junior in college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and was gone, obviously, for Thanksgiving because once you go to a place like that you don\u2019t come home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wrote: \u201cI am thankful for:\u00a0 Number one: my family\u2014being away for this long certainly increases my appreciation for each one of them.\u00a0 Number two: being in Estonia\u2014yes, it is hard; but knowing I am following God, there is no place I\u2019d rather be.\u00a0 Number three: the Lada,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the kind of car they drove while they were over there.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes, she ain\u2019t much to look at, but she is wonderful and dependable.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe can even depend on her to break down every month.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He used to say it was the finest car Russia ever made\u2014it was the <em>only <\/em>car\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only car.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014Russians ever made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, that was really especially fun.\u00a0 He has two more, of course, on there; but it was really a sort of bitter\/sweet Thanksgiving because we were all together, obviously, except for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone had things to write that were related to that.\u00a0 Laura put on her card:\u00a0 \u201cI am thankful for Benjamin that he has the courage to go to Estonia and tell people about God.\u201d I think pretty much every one of us put something like that that year because that was very important to all of us that he had taken a year of his life to go minister to people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it was the first time in the history of the Rainey family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that one person\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That one person wasn\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014wasn\u2019t home on Thanksgiving?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, what he sent us was a lengthy email\u2014that we all went to the computer and read\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And read together\u2014that\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we wept.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we stood there and cried\u2014all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We wept.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was incredible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m not going to read all of these for our listeners, but let me read a couple of them:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTo Samuel\u2014my little brother I used to beat up all the time. He would go crying to Mom and, then, I\u2019d have to re-stripe the parking lot out front or [indecipherable] dirt and leaves for a month for it. He has turned into a mighty man of God.\u00a0 You are simply the man, and I truly and honestly look up to you.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s more than one reason for that\u2014Samuel is 6\u20193\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter] My feeble words fail me trying to let you know how much I love you.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll use someone else\u2019s.\u00a0 John 15:13 says, \u2018Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.\u2019\u00a0 My life is yours.\u00a0 I would do anything for you.\u201d\u00a0 Read that and not get choked up; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cTo Mom:\u00a0 I want you to know that if I wrote all day and all night for the next 100 years, I would not even begin to say enough thanks and praises to you for all the things you have done for me in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou deserve much more than I could ever give or say in words; but someday, I shall try.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI miss you\u2014your warm hugs, your constant smile, your words of encouragement, your wonderful food, and your love for Dad.\u00a0 You and Dad have made me who I am today.\u00a0 I want you to know that you are the best mom in the whole entire world.\u00a0 I know this because I am on the other side of the world, and I know these things now.\u00a0 [Laughter] I love you, Benjamin.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Bob, I think this tradition\u2014this is why, at the first of the broadcast, I wanted to say, \u201cWe want to challenge you to recapture this holiday.\u201d\u00a0 Start now\u2014regardless of the ages of your children\u2014you may say, \u201cBut my kids are all old.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if they\u2019re adults! You get back together again\u2014pass a three-by-five card \/ one per person\u2014and ask everybody to write down five things that they\u2019re thankful for.\u00a0 The exercise alone, I promise you, will be priceless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the first few years of it\u2014maybe weak attempts at expressing thanks because, frankly, it\u2019s not a muscle we have exercised very well in this culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you discipline that muscle, and if you practice the discipline, what\u2019ll happen is\u2014you\u2019ll come to a point when you\u2019ll get this kind of statement of thanks from a mature, young man, who has had a heart of thanksgiving cultivated in him through a regular practice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I just want to say a word to all the moms\u2014that this is not that hard.\u00a0 Now, the first year you do it, you may feel some resistance.\u00a0 You may feel that it\u2019s a little difficult, but it\u2019s not a big project.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a huge thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that, I think, is very do-able.\u00a0 So, I just want to encourage the moms because, so often, we hear all these great ideas\u2014and all this wonderful stuff we can do in our family\u2014and it can feel very overwhelming.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think that this is an overwhelming thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I want to encourage the moms that it can be done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can initiate it \/ you can orchestrate it. You\u2019ll be glad you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening back to a conversation that took place almost a decade-and-a-half ago\u2014back a long time ago\u2014back 19 grandchildren ago, for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of grandkids!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a lot of grandkids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did that happen?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure how that happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2014when you have six kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know how it happened.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it is fun to go back and to remember what Thanksgiving was like and how you have been purposeful about that holiday for a long, long time in your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m really glad that I did it.\u00a0 It was born out of my love for history. I started watching some of the things that my children were learning in school about the first Thanksgiving and about the Pilgrims.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t think that sounds right.\u201d\u00a0 So, I started digging to find out if what I was thinking was right or if what they were learning was correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to find out that they weren\u2019t learning the story exactly the way it happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was motivated, as a mom, to make sure that my children understood the true story of our beginnings in our country and, especially, that they understood the spiritual foundation\u2014the biblical basis upon which these people, who came on the <em>Mayflower<\/em>, based their lives.\u00a0 It just was very staggering to me the sacrifice they made and their faith in some pretty difficult circumstances.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I knew that\u2014if my kids understood that \/ if they began to hear these stories\u2014they might help them say: \u201cOh, my life is pretty good.\u00a0 Oh, maybe, I should be grateful.\u201d\u00a0 So, that was the genesis of the story. morning.\u00a0 It just sort of grew into a more and more meaningful celebration; but I did it, initially, because I wanted the eight of us to have some time together alone, without extended family \/ without friends.\u00a0 I wanted us to have a little bit of time on that day to be together and to focus on what we were grateful for.\u00a0 considered\u2014that\u2019s what\u2014now, I knew in elementary school \/ we learned\u2014in fact, in elementary school \/ in public school, we learned, [singing]\u201cWe gather together We have one in our family we are going to talk about today that every family can adapt and use in their family in a meaningful way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, what we are going to do is go back and hear how you guys celebrated Thanksgiving\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014back when the kids were still at home\u2014because we came across a <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> program\u2014this is from the year, 2000.\u00a0 Now, I remember when 2000 sounded like it was out there in the future\u2014now, it\u2019s way, way back there; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was Y2K.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was getting ready to call that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were getting ready to fire up the generator\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014for Y2K.\u00a0 But we were talking about how you guys celebrate Thanksgiving and giving families a glimpse inside your home.\u00a0 There is a lot that is still the same at your house\u2014a lot of traditions that remain\u2014but a few things that have changed over the years.\u00a0 You\u2019ve added some things to the Thanksgiving celebration; haven\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 We mostly added people.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, really, the tradition has not changed.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the number of seats around the table.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s mostly people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many tables it took on our deck, here a couple of Thanksgivings ago, where we read the Thanksgiving story that Barbara has written in her book, <em>Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember<\/em>, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the parents conveniently all collected at one end of the table and put Barbara and me down with all the children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the grandchildren.\u00a0 Here I was\u2014attempting to read\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were standing up and walking around to keep their attention so they would hear a few words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was using every professional skill I have ever developed around speaking to keep my grandkids\u2019 attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how long did that last?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It didn\u2019t work\u2014maybe, five minutes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the point is\u2014we all wrote down on cards\u2014and you\u2019ll hear about this in a moment\u2014what we were thankful about during the past 12 months.\u00a0 I think, Bob, that spiritual discipline ought to be a part of every family, every Thanksgiving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we\u2019re really hoping that families will stop to consider that the day can be about more than just food and football. There\u2019s a biblical principle that\u2019s found in Psalm 78, Psalm 103, and Psalm 106.\u00a0 It\u2019s called the Landmark Principle or the Milestone Principle:\u00a0 \u201cGod has made His works to be remembered so that we might remember what He\u2019s done so that we might praise Him for who He is and so that we might trust Him for the problems that we\u2019re facing today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we forget what God has done and we don\u2019t give thanks to Him for what He\u2019s done, then, we forget to trust Him today.\u00a0 Thanksgiving <em>ought<\/em> to be a day that rivets us back to our Creator. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read Psalm 103 here quickly.\u00a0 \u201cBless the Lord, oh, my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.\u00a0 Bless the Lord, oh, my soul, and forget none of His benefits.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving and the word, \u201cthanks,\u201d\u2014both have within them the idea that they need an object.\u00a0 If you give thanks for your food before you eat it over a meal, you\u2019re praying to God.\u00a0 If you thank someone, you\u2019re taking an attitude of gratitude to that person\u2014expressing it.\u00a0 It\u2019s acknowledging that which you feel in your heart and you want to confess to the other person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what Thanksgiving is all about\u2014is getting our eyes off the horizontal\u2014 it\u2019s getting our eyes off of ourselves; and it\u2019s focusing on God and saying, \u201cThank you, God, for our spiritual roots.\u00a0 Thank you for the Pilgrims who gave their lives and who took a great spiritual risk to establish this nation and give us the spiritual freedom that we enjoy today.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were many hardships suffered by the Pilgrims.\u00a0 In fact, it might seem incongruous to gather together and give thanks to God when you consider some of what was suffered onboard the ship\u2014as people died \/ as children died through long, hard winters\u2014the same kind of situation.\u00a0 And yet, the Pilgrims understood that we are to give thanks in <em>all things<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 In everything.\u00a0 Yes, they endured an enormous number of trials because there were so, so many of them who died through, as you said, the process of sailing to the New World. But those first few years they lived in very desperate conditions, and many, many of them died.\u00a0 The ones who didn\u2019t die were sick, and they were worn out for caring for the others.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t have good shelter.\u00a0 They had very little food.\u00a0 All of that was a huge sacrifice because they were willing to stake their lives on religious freedom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we bring those things to mind with our children \/ as we reflect back on the Thanksgiving story, they can see the parallels with what we ought to be thankful for today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things I\u2019m grateful to Barbara for is bringing history alive in our family.\u00a0 As Barbara was talking about\u2014the trip over on the <em>Mayflower<\/em>\u2014I quickly opened to one of the devotionals around Thanksgiving. Just listen to this:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the journey grew long, the Pilgrims became weary with many suffering from seasickness.\u00a0 Oftentimes, they were at odds with the strangers, those passengers who were not Pilgrims.\u00a0 All 102 passengers shared cramped quarters in the ship\u2019s cabin\u2014which was about the size of a volleyball court\u201d\u2014102 people!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn a few sunny days, the children might have been allowed to play on the deck. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the older children would entertain the younger ones, reading them stories, playing games, and working puzzles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight!\u2014for how many weeks?\u00a0 All of a sudden, that story of the Pilgrims, coming over, has flesh and blood wrapped around it.\u00a0 These are families\u2014these are moms and dads who were sick in the hold of a ship, who risked their lives to establish this nation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read you this one:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDuring one storm, a man named John Howland began to panic.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t stand another minute in the damp, crowded cabin.\u00a0 He desperately wanted to go above deck to get some fresh air, but the captain had forbidden anyone to leave the cabin because it was too dangerous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut John felt as though he would suffocate if he stayed.\u00a0 So, he disobediently climbed the stairs and went out on the wet, slippery deck.\u00a0 That was a big mistake.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe huge waves tossed the little ship about so violently that John was thrown into the raging sea and nearly drowned.\u00a0 After he was miraculously saved, John never disobeyed the captain\u2019s orders again.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is a great story to read to your children because it illustrates the whole principle of obedience, and why we have rules, and why we expect the things we do out of our kids.\u00a0 My kids have never forgotten it.\u00a0 Every time I read that part of the story, they remember that vividly because they can so relate to that passenger who just thought he had to disobey.\u00a0 It was more important to get out on the deck than to obey.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anybody, who has ever ridden on a roller coaster, might have some idea of what it must have been like.\u00a0 The kids had to be screaming\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the parents had to think: \u201cThis is it for us.\u00a0 We could die, right here at sea.\u00a0 Did we really do the right thing in leaving England?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I mean, think about the questions we ask ourselves: \u201cGosh, I wonder if I did the right thing by putting my child in this school,\u201d or \u201c\u2026letting him play with that friend.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you think about what they had to question, being out on that ship\u2014I can\u2019t imagine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me continue to read.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDuring another storm, rough waves caused the ship to sway so far over on its side\u2014[Picture that]\u2014that some of the passengers worried that it might turn over.\u00a0 They were very afraid. [Understatement]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuddenly, a loud, terrifying noise rumbled through the ship.\u00a0 The beam that supported the main mast had cracked and was in danger of collapsing at any minute.\u00a0 As the Pilgrims prayed to God for help, William Brewster remembered that he had packed a large iron screw for his printing press.\u00a0 The crew hauled it into place and began to crank\u2014it worked.\u00a0 The screw raised the beam back into its original position.\u00a0 Everyone, including the sailors, thanked God for His protection.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many lessons of faith for our children\u2014for them to learn from these men and women who had to trust God in the midst of very real, frightening circumstances, where they could have lost their lives and their children\u2019s lives as well.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s helpful to paint those pictures vividly for them, and take them to those scenes, and then interact around it. Let them recall how this nation was formed at great cost and at great price and sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You use these stories and these spiritual lessons as a part of what you do in celebrating Thanksgiving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara\u2014when we first started doing this\u2014would read for about an hour \/\u00a0 hour and 15 minutes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t exaggerate.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two hours? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not over an hour\u2014but I agree it was lengthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have to waken him during the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we, every once in a while, would stop and go: \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll take a break.\u00a0 Let\u2019s do this or do that.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I\u2019d pick back up again.\u00a0 I usually never ended up eating, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She had all these\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014there were just too many good things\u2014to leave out!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, they were great stories!\u00a0 There were all these little snapshots of stories that needed to be told; you know?\u00a0 Squanto\u2014or whatever his name was\u2014the Indian who had been trained in England, who spoke English\u2014and how he was the key to their survival.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and you have a captive audience.\u00a0 I mean, how often do you get everybody listening at one time?\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve got to take advantage of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s because you\u2019re holding the turkey hostage until\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, you\u2019re holding the Company French Toast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s how we do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s how we do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Somebody else might do the turkey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, really, what\u2019s become the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving celebration for you has been to encourage your children to write down things for which they are thankful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you shared some of the things they wrote when they were younger; but you said, as they got older, some of that has become richer and even more meaningful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Well, after we read the story, which sets the context for them and being thankful, it\u2019s much easier for them to be thankful after they\u2019ve heard what the Pilgrims went through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have everyone write five things that they\u2019re thankful for.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1997, our son, Benjamin, spent a year in Estonia\u2014overseas.\u00a0 About a month before Thanksgiving, I packed up a little Thanksgiving goody box for him and sent it. I included a card, just like the ones we were going to have on Thanksgiving Day.\u00a0 When he came home from Estonia, at the end of the year, he brought his card\u2014I think we probably called him that day, and he may have read it to us\u2014but anyway, this is the card he wrote while he was in Estonia.\u00a0 He was\u2014what?\u201421 years old or something?\u00a0 He was a junior in college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and was gone, obviously, for Thanksgiving because once you go to a place like that you don\u2019t come home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wrote: \u201cI am thankful for:\u00a0 Number one: my family\u2014being away for this long certainly increases my appreciation for each one of them.\u00a0 Number two: being in Estonia\u2014yes, it is hard; but knowing I am following God, there is no place I\u2019d rather be.\u00a0 Number three: the Lada,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the kind of car they drove while they were over there.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes, she ain\u2019t much to look at, but she is wonderful and dependable.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe can even depend on her to break down every month.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He used to say it was the finest car Russia ever made\u2014it was the <em>only <\/em>car\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only car.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014Russians ever made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, that was really especially fun.\u00a0 He has two more, of course, on there; but it was really a sort of bitter\/sweet Thanksgiving because we were all together, obviously, except for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone had things to write that were related to that.\u00a0 Laura put on her card:\u00a0 \u201cI am thankful for Benjamin that he has the courage to go to Estonia and tell people about God.\u201d I think pretty much every one of us put something like that that year because that was very important to all of us that he had taken a year of his life to go minister to people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it was the first time in the history of the Rainey family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that one person\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That one person wasn\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014wasn\u2019t home on Thanksgiving?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, what he sent us was a lengthy email\u2014that we all went to the computer and read\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And read together\u2014that\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we wept.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we stood there and cried\u2014all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We wept.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was incredible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m not going to read all of these for our listeners, but let me read a couple of them:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTo Samuel\u2014my little brother I used to beat up all the time. He would go crying to Mom and, then, I\u2019d have to re-stripe the parking lot out front or [indecipherable] dirt and leaves for a month for it. He has turned into a mighty man of God.\u00a0 You are simply the man, and I truly and honestly look up to you.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s more than one reason for that\u2014Samuel is 6\u20193\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter] My feeble words fail me trying to let you know how much I love you.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll use someone else\u2019s.\u00a0 John 15:13 says, \u2018Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.\u2019\u00a0 My life is yours.\u00a0 I would do anything for you.\u201d\u00a0 Read that and not get choked up; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cTo Mom:\u00a0 I want you to know that if I wrote all day and all night for the next 100 years, I would not even begin to say enough thanks and praises to you for all the things you have done for me in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou deserve much more than I could ever give or say in words; but someday, I shall try.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI miss you\u2014your warm hugs, your constant smile, your words of encouragement, your wonderful food, and your love for Dad.\u00a0 You and Dad have made me who I am today.\u00a0 I want you to know that you are the best mom in the whole entire world.\u00a0 I know this because I am on the other side of the world, and I know these things now.\u00a0 [Laughter] I love you, Benjamin.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Bob, I think this tradition\u2014this is why, at the first of the broadcast, I wanted to say, \u201cWe want to challenge you to recapture this holiday.\u201d\u00a0 Start now\u2014regardless of the ages of your children\u2014you may say, \u201cBut my kids are all old.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if they\u2019re adults! You get back together again\u2014pass a three-by-five card \/ one per person\u2014and ask everybody to write down five things that they\u2019re thankful for.\u00a0 The exercise alone, I promise you, will be priceless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the first few years of it\u2014maybe weak attempts at expressing thanks because, frankly, it\u2019s not a muscle we have exercised very well in this culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you discipline that muscle, and if you practice the discipline, what\u2019ll happen is\u2014you\u2019ll come to a point when you\u2019ll get this kind of statement of thanks from a mature, young man, who has had a heart of thanksgiving cultivated in him through a regular practice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I just want to say a word to all the moms\u2014that this is not that hard.\u00a0 Now, the first year you do it, you may feel some resistance.\u00a0 You may feel that it\u2019s a little difficult, but it\u2019s not a big project.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a huge thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that, I think, is very do-able.\u00a0 So, I just want to encourage the moms because, so often, we hear all these great ideas\u2014and all this wonderful stuff we can do in our family\u2014and it can feel very overwhelming.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think that this is an overwhelming thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I want to encourage the moms that it can be done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can initiate it \/ you can orchestrate it. You\u2019ll be glad you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening back to a conversation that took place almost a decade-and-a-half ago\u2014back a long time ago\u2014back 19 grandchildren ago, for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of grandkids!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a lot of grandkids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did that happen?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure how that happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2014when you have six kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know how it happened.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it is fun to go back and to remember what Thanksgiving was like and how you have been purposeful about that holiday for a long, long time in your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m really glad that I did it.\u00a0 It was born out of my love for history. I started watching some of the things that my children were learning in school about the first Thanksgiving and about the Pilgrims.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t think that sounds right.\u201d\u00a0 So, I started digging to find out if what I was thinking was right or if what they were learning was correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to find out that they weren\u2019t learning the story exactly the way it happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was motivated, as a mom, to make sure that my children understood the true story of our beginnings in our country and, especially, that they understood the spiritual foundation\u2014the biblical basis upon which these people, who came on the <em>Mayflower<\/em>, based their lives.\u00a0 It just was very staggering to me the sacrifice they made and their faith in some pretty difficult circumstances.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I knew that\u2014if my kids understood that \/ if they began to hear these stories\u2014they might help them say: \u201cOh, my life is pretty good.\u00a0 Oh, maybe, I should be grateful.\u201d\u00a0 So, that was the genesis of the story.
