He has also known profound loss and suffering, as a dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>My pastor in Pittsburgh had a great lesson on that when we were a young married couple. He said: \u201cYou know, James and Peter were in prison; and the church prayed for both. James got beheaded, and Peter got released.\u201d\u00a0 Both of them were God\u2019s will. We can feel badly for James\u2014and I\u2019m sure they all did\u2014but God had a plan for that. So, that's how I've kind of looked at it. Welcome back, Coach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Thank you very much. It's great to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014a lot of us miss seeing you on the sidelines when we watch the games on Sunday\u2014but it is fun to see you in the broadcast booth every Sunday night. I know that way you get a chance to catch a few of the Oregon games and watch your son play college football. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. And we just appreciate you taking some time out to talk to with us today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Coach, there is an event that you're a part of\u2014and have been a part of for a number of years\u2014called the \u201cSuper Bowl Breakfast.\u201d\u00a0 Athletes in Action host this on the day before the Super Bowl. It\u2019s a gathering of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u20141,500 \/ a couple of thousand people, in a magnificent setting, to honor football players who have character. They give an award called \u201cThe Bart Starr Award\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014which is just a\u2014it's a great event. I've attended it a couple of times. A couple of years ago, you found yourself on that stage, speaking in a situation that you didn't think you would find yourself in whatsoever. You had helped start a ministry called \u201cAll Pro Dad.\u201d\u00a0 You were helping dads be better parents; and yet, your own son, Jamey, had taken his life. I want you to listen to a clip that we have from that breakfast and what you said. Then, I want to ask you to take us to what you were thinking and feeling as you made those statements a couple of years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>But I think the most important lesson that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord, I learned from my oldest son, James. As you heard, James would have been 19; but he died right before Christmas. James was a Christian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was, by far, the most sensitive \/ the most compassionate of all our boys. As most teenage boys today, James was getting a lot of messages from the world that maybe that's not the way to be. He was struggling very much with how you should respond to the world, and he ended up taking his life right before Christmas. It was tough\u2014it was very, very painful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as painful as it was, there were some good things that came out of it. When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets. James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014and just the normal process. You don't think about it. I said, \u201cHey, I'll see you later.\u201d\u00a0 My daughter took him to the airport. We just exchanged, \u201cSee you later,\u201d and that was the last time I saw him. I talked to him on the phone a lot, but never saw him again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn't give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met a guy, the next day, after the funeral. He said: \u201cYou know, I was there\u2014I heard you talking. I took off work today. I called my son; and I said, \u2018I\u2019m going to take you to the movies, and we\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That was a real, real blessing to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to the Organ Donors program. We got a letter back, about two weeks ago, that two people had received his corneas and now can see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got a letter from a girl in our church, who had grown up with James. She said: \u201cWe've been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years. I sat there in church, every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI came to the funeral because I knew James. When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u2018There has to be a God\u2019; and I accepted Christ into my life. My life's been different since that day.\u201d\u00a0 [Applause] And that was an awesome blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, all those things have kind of made me realize what God's love is all about. But here is the biggest part of that\u2014if God had had a conversation with me and said: \u201cI can help some people see. I can heal some relationships. I can give some people eternal life, but I have to take your son to do it\u2014you make the choice.\u201d\u00a0 I know how I\u2019d have answered that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would have said: \u201cNo, I\u2019m sorry. As great as all that is, I don't want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God\u2014He had that choice\u2014and He said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going to do it,\u201d 2,000 years ago, with His Son, Jesus, on the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Coach, what\u2019s it like to listen to your words?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I can hardly even believe it. I guess, when you\u2019re up there talking, you don\u2019t know how it sounds. I\u2019d always had the dream of taking my team to that breakfast and talking about the game, and that\u2019s what I had hoped to do that year. It didn\u2019t work out that way. But I realize, at the time, I had a great opportunity to tell people about something more important than the Super Bowl\u2014more important than the team\u2014to talk about Christ and the lessons that I had learned from all three of my boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd listening to it\u2014it\u2019s hard to believe\u2014but that was really what was on my heart, at the time. It was just the proper place to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve taken the story\u2014on more than one occasion\u2014to be able to point people back to God and not become embittered toward Him but ultimately to move toward Him, and toward faith, and trust in Him. You really believe that\u2019s what we must do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We have to do that. There are things that we don\u2019t understand and: \u201cWhy does God allow these things to happen?\u00a0 Why does God take situations that we think are tragic and use them?\u00a0 Why doesn\u2019t He always bless us the way we want to be blessed?\u201d\u00a0 Those are the questions that we\u2019ll never really be able to answer, but faith and believing really mean believing in all situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us to the phone call you received. It was 1:45\u2014three days before Christmas. I mean, you were accustomed, on occasion, to getting a phone call, perhaps, about a player getting into trouble. And when the phone rang that night, you had no idea what was about to be said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, you really don\u2019t. It\u2019s quite a shock. It\u2019s not a phone call you\u2019d ever wish anyone would get; but I\u2019ve talked to a lot of parents, since then, who have gotten the same type of call. And it\u2019s just\u2014as painful as it is, you have to understand that it does happen\u2014that we can\u2019t allow it to shake our faith, and we do have to move forward. And, really, the only way to move forward is with God\u2019s help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You describe the last time you saw your son that Thanksgiving\u2014there had been phone calls. Do you remember the last conversation with him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember, specifically, the last conversation; but it was kind of like they all are: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cHey, what\u2019s going on?\u00a0 How was work?\u00a0 How was school?\u00a0 What are you up to?\u00a0 What are you going to do tonight?\u00a0 Where are you headed?\u201d\u2014just the normal things. And that\u2019s probably the biggest lesson I learned out of all that\u2014is we just can\u2019t take life for granted. The Bible says tomorrow is not promised to us, and we tend to think it is. We think everything is going to go along the way it normally does. I think it\u2019s just made me more thankful for every little thing and the things that I don\u2019t want to take for granted anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s natural for a parent to think: \u201cDid I miss a signal?\u00a0 Was there something I should have seen and should have known?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>You know, I talk to people all the time about that. You can second-guess yourself forever and go back and look at things that you\u2019d hope to see. Most of the parents that I talked to are in the same boat. They really can\u2019t explain it. They\u2019ll never understand why. That\u2019s the hurtful thing is: \u201cIs there something I could have done?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t I see this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the fact is\u2014most of the time, you don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were there any hints that he was struggling with depression or with suicidal thoughts, along the way, that you recall at all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Not really\u2014not really. And, again, as I say, with most of the people I talked to, it\u2019s the same way\u2014never, really, any idea at all\u2014it\u2019s a total surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, folks are going to hear you talking about this on the radio, and it\u2019s going to sound like the ache is gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It really isn\u2019t, but you have to move on. You have to move forward, and you have to try to think about why God allows things to happen. One of\u2014my pastor in Pittsburgh had a great lesson on that\u2014when we were a young married couple. It\u2019s painful\u2014you never want it to happen\u2014but: \u201cWhat can be positive from it?\u201d \u201cHow can you move on?\u201d \u201cHow can you make the situation better?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things I\u2019ve heard you say, Coach, is that rather than asking the question, \u201cWhy?\u201d we need to ask the question, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the question you\u2019re trying to answer in the loss of your son. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I supposed to learn from this?\u00a0 What am I supposed to do to help other people?\u00a0 How can we make it as positive as we can?\u201d\u00a0 And you\u2019re always going to have the heartbreak \/ you\u2019re always going to have the pain in your heart, but how do you really look forward and see how you can go and grow from that point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t go through this alone. In preparation for our time together, I called a friend, whom you also called\u2014Tom Lamphere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe day after you received the news of your son\u2019s death, you got on the phone with Tom and said, \u201cWould you come and stay with our family over Christmas and spend some time with us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, Tom called me and said he was coming. I said, \u201cNo, Tom, you need to be with your family.\u201d\u00a0 But Tom was our chaplain with the Vikings. I had been gone, probably, six years, at that point. But he\u2019s the type of person that is never going to leave you alone once you\u2019re one of his guys. So, he\u2014got a reservation, got on a plane, left his family at Christmas\u2014and came and stayed with our family. That\u2019s just the type of person he is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what did he do during that time, Coach?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>He just prayed with us. He talked about how we could move forward and how we had to stay together, as a family, and really just was there and ministered to us. That\u2019s what gave me the sense of what I had to do with other people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s probably why I talked to so many people, at this point in time, because he gave our family a lift when we needed it. I felt I can do that for some other people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s critical\u2014if you\u2019re going through something like this\u2014to open the door to community and to guys like this to come in\u2014not to go it alone; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It is, and we were very fortunate. Obviously, part of being in such a public position, it\u2019s tough because everybody knows about it. You feel you\u2019re out there, but part of the benefit was\u2014we got so many cards, we got so many letters, so many encouraging notes\u2014but there are a lot of people, that those kind of tragedies happen to, that don\u2019t have that. How do they get encouraged, and where are we for the normal person?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You might find it interesting, Coach\u2014in my conversation with Tom, I asked him what he remembered most about those three days with you over Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI was not surprised but was watching him lead his family, spiritually. Coach was quoting Job when Job was addressing his wife and said, \u2018Do we accept the good things from God and not accept the trouble that comes our way?\u2019\u201d and that you were leading your family, in faith, in the midst of what had to be just an enormous heartbreak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the other thing\u2014he said you went to church on Christmas Day. You led your family in, not withdrawing or retreating, but going ahead and stepping out and joining a community of believers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We did, and it was a great thing for us. We got to see just how much the church cared and got that encouragement from the congregation and our pastor. It was hard to do because you really, at that point, didn\u2019t want to talk to a lot of people; but again, I think that\u2019s what\u2014to me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014sports kind of prepares you for\u2014that there are disappointments \/ there are things\u2014there are losses \/ you lose games\u2014but you have to go on. We\u2019re disappointed in life; but, if we really believe in God and really believe that He is in charge \/ He is working everything according to His plan for His glory, then, you\u2019ve got to accept it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m sitting, here, listening to you relive some of what has to be the most tragic moments of your entire life. And usually, when we pick a spouse, we pick someone who is the direct opposite of us. And I\u2019m wondering how your wife, Lauren, has handled this tragedy because she has, undoubtedly, handled it differently than you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No question\u2014different emotions. It\u2019s been much tougher, I think, on her. She is one that wears her emotions on her sleeve, and she was close to James. And that\u2019s one of the things that I\u2019ve related to a lot of people that I\u2019ve talked to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the pain of losing a child never goes away\u2014and I think for the moms, more so than the dads\u2014it\u2019s even more acute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Given the differences between how the two of you processed this, how have you tried to love her and lead her in the midst of this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>You have to try to be understanding. And that is one of the things in the loss of a child\u2014no matter how it is\u2014people grieve at different times \/ different ways. They process at different speeds. You have to be understanding of the other person. There will be some days when you\u2019re doing well and the other person isn\u2019t, and vice-versa. You\u2019ve got to be understanding\u2014you\u2019ve got to be loving at those times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Parents, who lose a child\u2014it often has an impact on their marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Very much so\u2014we had read that. We heard that from counselors. You have to take steps to avoid that; and you have to, every day, say: \u201cNo matter how it goes, we are going to be together in this. We\u2019re going to be united. We\u2019re not going to let Satan get a foothold in our marriage because of our emotional feelings.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something you have to really work through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You experienced your first Father\u2019s Day after that\u2014and you happened to be with some NFL coaches on that first Father\u2019s Day, after you lost your son, James. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Yes, and the first time around is tough\u2014all those anniversaries\u2014the first time; but I was with a group of guys that understood about fathering. They had the same type of Christian spirit. So, it was a good group to be with. Again, I was able to share some things with them about the importance of not taking your kids for granted and that. I think it was good for me to be with them; and I think probably they heard some things and saw some things from me that helped them too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I asked Tom Lamphere about just how you processed this. It was interesting, Coach. He said, \u201cCoach Tony Dungy is the same man\u2014when he has lost a son to suicide \/ as he was the same man, when he won the Super Bowl \/ as he was the same man who was leading his family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou\u2019re just consistently keeping on placing your faith in Jesus Christ \/ walking with Him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he went on to tell the story of what you had done, that morning, on that first Father\u2019s Day. He said he asked you how you were handling it. You said this\u2014this is what Tom said\u2014said: \u201cWell, I got up that morning and spent time in God\u2019s Word; and I was focused on how much God loved me. I was just overcome with how much God really does care for me, and has a plan for me, and loves me.\u201d And you shared that with those NFL coaches. Anyone else could share something like that, in the midst of life, Tony, but to share that\u2014in the midst of a tragedy, on a day like that\u2014that\u2019s a remarkable thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, for me, that\u2019s what's gotten me through everything\u2014is to look forward and to understand that God is in control and God is there for us, not as an adversary, but as one who does love us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if we understand that, then, I think you can take everything. It\u2019s just like with your parents\u2014sometimes, you\u2019re mad at them \/ sometimes, they\u2019re not letting you do what you think you ought to be able to do, as a kid\u2014but you understand they have your best interests at heart. Even when you\u2019re not sure of why they\u2019re doing things, you know that they love you; and they\u2019re doing it for your best. I think we\u2019ve got to develop that same type of thought and relationship with the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Coach, I want to thank you for allowing us to draw the water out of the well of what God has done in your heart and your life. And we just appreciate you\u2014the man you are and how you represent Jesus Christ. And we\u2019re cheering you on, as you continue to represent Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, thank you.\u00a0 And it\u2019s just a wonderful, wonderful privilege. It\u2019s a gathering of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u20141,500 \/ a couple of thousand people, in a magnificent setting, to honor football players who have character. They give an award called \u201cThe Bart Starr Award\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014which is just a\u2014it's a great event. I've attended it a couple of times. A couple of years ago, you found yourself on that stage, speaking in a situation that you didn't think you would find yourself in whatsoever. You had helped start a ministry called \u201cAll Pro Dad.\u201d\u00a0 You were helping dads be better parents; and yet, your own son, Jamey, had taken his life. I want you to listen to a clip that we have from that breakfast and what you said. Then, I want to ask you to take us to what you were thinking and feeling as you made those statements a couple of years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>But I think the most important lesson that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord, I learned from my oldest son, James. As you heard, James would have been 19; but he died right before Christmas. James was a Christian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was, by far, the most sensitive \/ the most compassionate of all our boys. As most teenage boys today, James was getting a lot of messages from the world that maybe that's not the way to be. He was struggling very much with how you should respond to the world, and he ended up taking his life right before Christmas. It was tough\u2014it was very, very painful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as painful as it was, there were some good things that came out of it. When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets. James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014and just the normal process. You don't think about it. I said, \u201cHey, I'll see you later.\u201d\u00a0 My daughter took him to the airport. We just exchanged, \u201cSee you later,\u201d and that was the last time I saw him. I talked to him on the phone a lot, but never saw him again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn't give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met a guy, the next day, after the funeral. He said: \u201cYou know, I was there\u2014I heard you talking. I took off work today. I called my son; and I said, \u2018I\u2019m going to take you to the movies, and we\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That was a real, real blessing to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to the Organ Donors program. We got a letter back, about two weeks ago, that two people had received his corneas and now can see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got a letter from a girl in our church, who had grown up with James. She said: \u201cWe've been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years. I sat there in church, every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI came to the funeral because I knew James. When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u2018There has to be a God\u2019; and I accepted Christ into my life. My life's been different since that day.\u201d\u00a0 [Applause] And that was an awesome blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, all those things have kind of made me realize what God's love is all about. But here is the biggest part of that\u2014if God had had a conversation with me and said: \u201cI can help some people see. I can heal some relationships. I can give some people eternal life, but I have to take your son to do it\u2014you make the choice.\u201d\u00a0 I know how I\u2019d have answered that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would have said: \u201cNo, I\u2019m sorry. As great as all that is, I don't want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God\u2014He had that choice\u2014and He said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going to do it,\u201d 2,000 years ago, with His Son, Jesus, on the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Coach, what\u2019s it like to listen to your words?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I can hardly even believe it. I guess, when you\u2019re up there talking, you don\u2019t know how it sounds. I\u2019d always had the dream of taking my team to that breakfast and talking about the game, and that\u2019s what I had hoped to do that year. It didn\u2019t work out that way. But I realize, at the time, I had a great opportunity to tell people about something more important than the Super Bowl\u2014more important than the team\u2014to talk about Christ and the lessons that I had learned from all three of my boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd listening to it\u2014it\u2019s hard to believe\u2014but that was really what was on my heart, at the time. It was just the proper place to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve taken the story\u2014on more than one occasion\u2014to be able to point people back to God and not become embittered toward Him but ultimately to move toward Him, and toward faith, and trust in Him. You really believe that\u2019s what we must do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We have to do that. There are things that we don\u2019t understand and: \u201cWhy does God allow these things to happen?\u00a0 Why does God take situations that we think are tragic and use them?\u00a0 Why doesn\u2019t He always bless us the way we want to be blessed?\u201d\u00a0 Those are the questions that we\u2019ll never really be able to answer, but faith and believing really mean believing in all situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us to the phone call you received. It was 1:45\u2014three days before Christmas. I mean, you were accustomed, on occasion, to getting a phone call, perhaps, about a player getting into trouble. And when the phone rang that night, you had no idea what was about to be said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, you really don\u2019t. It\u2019s quite a shock. It\u2019s not a phone call you\u2019d ever wish anyone would get; but I\u2019ve talked to a lot of parents, since then, who have gotten the same type of call. And it\u2019s just\u2014as painful as it is, you have to understand that it does happen\u2014that we can\u2019t allow it to shake our faith, and we do have to move forward. And, really, the only way to move forward is with God\u2019s help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You describe the last time you saw your son that Thanksgiving\u2014there had been phone calls. Do you remember the last conversation with him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember, specifically, the last conversation; but it was kind of like they all are: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cHey, what\u2019s going on?\u00a0 How was work?\u00a0 How was school?\u00a0 What are you up to?\u00a0 What are you going to do tonight?\u00a0 Where are you headed?\u201d\u2014just the normal things. And that\u2019s probably the biggest lesson I learned out of all that\u2014is we just can\u2019t take life for granted. The Bible says tomorrow is not promised to us, and we tend to think it is. We think everything is going to go along the way it normally does. I think it\u2019s just made me more thankful for every little thing and the things that I don\u2019t want to take for granted anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s natural for a parent to think: \u201cDid I miss a signal?\u00a0 Was there something I should have seen and should have known?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>You know, I talk to people all the time about that. You can second-guess yourself forever and go back and look at things that you\u2019d hope to see. Most of the parents that I talked to are in the same boat. They really can\u2019t explain it. They\u2019ll never understand why. That\u2019s the hurtful thing is: \u201cIs there something I could have done?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t I see this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the fact is\u2014most of the time, you don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were there any hints that he was struggling with depression or with suicidal thoughts, along the way, that you recall at all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Not really\u2014not really. And, again, as I say, with most of the people I talked to, it\u2019s the same way\u2014never, really, any idea at all\u2014it\u2019s a total surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, folks are going to hear you talking about this on the radio, and it\u2019s going to sound like the ache is gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It really isn\u2019t, but you have to move on. You have to move forward, and you have to try to think about why God allows things to happen. One of\u2014my pastor in Pittsburgh had a great lesson on that\u2014when we were a young married couple. He said: \u201cYou know, James and Peter were in prison; and the church prayed for both. James got beheaded, and Peter got released.\u201d\u00a0 Both of them were God\u2019s will. We can feel badly for James\u2014and I\u2019m sure they all did\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but God had a plan for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, that\u2019s how I\u2019ve kind of looked at it. It\u2019s painful\u2014you never want it to happen\u2014but: \u201cWhat can be positive from it?\u201d \u201cHow can you move on?\u201d \u201cHow can you make the situation better?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things I\u2019ve heard you say, Coach, is that rather than asking the question, \u201cWhy?\u201d we need to ask the question, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the question you\u2019re trying to answer in the loss of your son. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I supposed to learn from this?\u00a0 What am I supposed to do to help other people?\u00a0 How can we make it as positive as we can?\u201d\u00a0 And you\u2019re always going to have the heartbreak \/ you\u2019re always going to have the pain in your heart, but how do you really look forward and see how you can go and grow from that point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t go through this alone. In preparation for our time together, I called a friend, whom you also called\u2014Tom Lamphere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe day after you received the news of your son\u2019s death, you got on the phone with Tom and said, \u201cWould you come and stay with our family over Christmas and spend some time with us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No, Tom called me and said he was coming. I said, \u201cNo, Tom, you need to be with your family.\u201d\u00a0 But Tom was our chaplain with the Vikings. I had been gone, probably, six years, at that point. But he\u2019s the type of person that is never going to leave you alone once you\u2019re one of his guys. So, he\u2014got a reservation, got on a plane, left his family at Christmas\u2014and came and stayed with our family. That\u2019s just the type of person he is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what did he do during that time, Coach?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>He just prayed with us. He talked about how we could move forward and how we had to stay together, as a family, and really just was there and ministered to us. That\u2019s what gave me the sense of what I had to do with other people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s probably why I talked to so many people, at this point in time, because he gave our family a lift when we needed it. I felt I can do that for some other people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s critical\u2014if you\u2019re going through something like this\u2014to open the door to community and to guys like this to come in\u2014not to go it alone; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>It is, and we were very fortunate. Obviously, part of being in such a public position, it\u2019s tough because everybody knows about it. You feel you\u2019re out there, but part of the benefit was\u2014we got so many cards, we got so many letters, so many encouraging notes\u2014but there are a lot of people, that those kind of tragedies happen to, that don\u2019t have that. How do they get encouraged, and where are we for the normal person?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You might find it interesting, Coach\u2014in my conversation with Tom, I asked him what he remembered most about those three days with you over Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI was not surprised but was watching him lead his family, spiritually. Coach was quoting Job when Job was addressing his wife and said, \u2018Do we accept the good things from God and not accept the trouble that comes our way?\u2019\u201d and that you were leading your family, in faith, in the midst of what had to be just an enormous heartbreak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the other thing\u2014he said you went to church on Christmas Day. You led your family in, not withdrawing or retreating, but going ahead and stepping out and joining a community of believers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>We did, and it was a great thing for us. We got to see just how much the church cared and got that encouragement from the congregation and our pastor. It was hard to do because you really, at that point, didn\u2019t want to talk to a lot of people; but again, I think that\u2019s what\u2014to me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014sports kind of prepares you for\u2014that there are disappointments \/ there are things\u2014there are losses \/ you lose games\u2014but you have to go on. We\u2019re disappointed in life; but, if we really believe in God and really believe that He is in charge \/ He is working everything according to His plan for His glory, then, you\u2019ve got to accept it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m sitting, here, listening to you relive some of what has to be the most tragic moments of your entire life. And usually, when we pick a spouse, we pick someone who is the direct opposite of us. And I\u2019m wondering how your wife, Lauren, has handled this tragedy because she has, undoubtedly, handled it differently than you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>No question\u2014different emotions. It\u2019s been much tougher, I think, on her. She is one that wears her emotions on her sleeve, and she was close to James. And that\u2019s one of the things that I\u2019ve related to a lot of people that I\u2019ve talked to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the pain of losing a child never goes away\u2014and I think for the moms, more so than the dads\u2014it\u2019s even more acute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Given the differences between how the two of you processed this, how have you tried to love her and lead her in the midst of this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>You have to try to be understanding. And that is one of the things in the loss of a child\u2014no matter how it is\u2014people grieve at different times \/ different ways. They process at different speeds. You have to be understanding of the other person. There will be some days when you\u2019re doing well and the other person isn\u2019t, and vice-versa. You\u2019ve got to be understanding\u2014you\u2019ve got to be loving at those times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Parents, who lose a child\u2014it often has an impact on their marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Very much so\u2014we had read that. We heard that from counselors. You have to take steps to avoid that; and you have to, every day, say: \u201cNo matter how it goes, we are going to be together in this. We\u2019re going to be united. We\u2019re not going to let Satan get a foothold in our marriage because of our emotional feelings.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something you have to really work through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You experienced your first Father\u2019s Day after that\u2014and you happened to be with some NFL coaches on that first Father\u2019s Day, after you lost your son, James. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Yes, and the first time around is tough\u2014all those anniversaries\u2014the first time; but I was with a group of guys that understood about fathering. They had the same type of Christian spirit. So, it was a good group to be with. Again, I was able to share some things with them about the importance of not taking your kids for granted and that. I think it was good for me to be with them; and I think probably they heard some things and saw some things from me that helped them too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I asked Tom Lamphere about just how you processed this. It was interesting, Coach. He said, \u201cCoach Tony Dungy is the same man\u2014when he has lost a son to suicide \/ as he was the same man, when he won the Super Bowl \/ as he was the same man who was leading his family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou\u2019re just consistently keeping on placing your faith in Jesus Christ \/ walking with Him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he went on to tell the story of what you had done, that morning, on that first Father\u2019s Day. He said he asked you how you were handling it. You said this\u2014this is what Tom said\u2014said: \u201cWell, I got up that morning and spent time in God\u2019s Word; and I was focused on how much God loved me. I was just overcome with how much God really does care for me, and has a plan for me, and loves me.\u201d And you shared that with those NFL coaches. Anyone else could share something like that, in the midst of life, Tony, but to share that\u2014in the midst of a tragedy, on a day like that\u2014that\u2019s a remarkable thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony: <\/strong>Well, for me, that\u2019s what's gotten me through everything\u2014is to look forward and to understand that God is in control and God is there for us, not as an adversary, but as one who does love us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if we understand that, then, I think you can take everything. It\u2019s just like with your parents\u2014sometimes, you\u2019re mad at them \/ sometimes, they\u2019re not letting you do what you think you ought to be able to do, as a kid\u2014but you understand they have your best interests at heart. Even when you\u2019re not sure of why they\u2019re doing things, you know that they love you; and they\u2019re doing it for your best. I think we\u2019ve got to develop that same type of thought and relationship with the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Coach, I want to thank you for allowing us to draw the water out of the well of what God has done in your heart and your life. And we just appreciate you\u2014the man you are and how you represent Jesus Christ. And we\u2019re cheering you on, as you continue to represent Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tony:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, thank you.\u00a0 And it\u2019s just a wonderful, wonderful privilege. I think the guys are going to find it beneficial. I think they are going to be challenged. I think they are going to be encouraged.
