Pastor Matt Chandler has some counsel for us about something that\u2019s very hard to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong> One of the worst things you can do, as a married couple, is let the sun go down on your anger; right?\u00a0 The reason that is\u2014is because you\u2019ll lie in bed\u2014she\u2019ll face that way and you\u2019ll face this way\u2014and you\u2019ll just let that root of bitterness start growing down. In fact, you\u2019ll help it go down\u2014you\u2019ll drill it. You\u2019ll be like, \u201cOh, she doesn\u2019t respect me\u201d; and she\u2019ll be doing the same. The root of bitterness will just grow and grow and grow. It will grow and grow and grow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says: \u201cDon\u2019t let that happen. You need to nip it in the bud, man. You need to not go to bed angry. You need to try and resolve it before you go to bed at night.\u201d I think the weight of that falls on the man. I know some of you are like, \u201cYou do not know my wife, Chandler! I\u2019ve seen your wife\u2014she sings, she looks so beautiful, she\u2019s sweet.\u201d Listen, two days ago I saw fire shoot out of my wife\u2019s eyes and kill a puppy. [Laughter] I\u2019m just curious\u2014have you ever seen the fire shoot out of her eyes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have seen that\u2014it\u2019s brought me to my knees! No, she\u2019s never done that\u2014my sweet wife!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We thought that perhaps some of our male listeners today should just gather together around the radio and listen up because they are going to be challenged to live, as godly husbands and godly dads; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. In fact, Bob, as I was thinking about this broadcast, I thought of a quote by Charles Wadsworth. Do you think Charlie was related to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Henry Wadsworth Longfellow? No, because it\u2019s a middle name and a last name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t think there\u2019s any chance they\u2019re related? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wadsworth is not, you know\u2014well, anyway, here\u2019s what Charles Wadsworth said\u2014now, you have to follow this carefully \/ there\u2019s a ton of wisdom wrapped up in this: \u201cBy the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he\u2019s wrong.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, isn\u2019t that the way life goes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is the way life goes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, how many dads out there, right now, are wondering: \u201cAm I right? Am I ever right?\u201d Well, you know what? You\u2019re going to get some encouragement today from a guy who is not on staff with FamilyLife, but he should be because he believes the same book we do\u2014the Bible\u2014has the blueprints for equipping men to be better husbands and fathers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, Matt Chandler is the pastor at The Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas. I know they have a number of campuses around the Dallas area. Matt is one of the guys who is featured on the FamilyLife <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series for men. He\u2019s one of the guys we went down and shot some video with. In fact, we\u2019ve got a segment with Matt and his wife, Lauren, talking about one of the challenges they\u2019ve been through in their marriage. I know a number of people who get Matt\u2019s sermons as podcasts\u2014he\u2019s just a really good preacher. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, they used to have a puppy. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re going to hear the puppy story today as we listen to Part One of a message from Matt Chandler, from the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas. Here\u2019s Matt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong> I want to tackle what I believe is just a <em>massive <\/em>topic. It\u2019s not going to be easy to do, but here\u2019s what I want to talk about. I want to talk about men, and I want to talk about masculinity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to talk about what being a man <em>is<\/em>, and I want to talk about what God created men <em>for<\/em>; alright? It\u2019s a complex subject. I know a lot of women are like: \u201cIt\u2019s not complex; alright!? Feed him \/ hug him\u2014he\u2019s fine!\u201d\u2014alright? I know there are those of you who don\u2019t think it\u2019s\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut did you know that 1 Corinthians 11 said that \u201cmen are the glory of God\u201d? That\u2019s a really big, broad, massive thing. So, if you\u2019re a woman in here, we have addressed women. So we\u2019re going to do men now. I don\u2019t want to offend you. I\u2019m not trying to offend you in any way, but here\u2019s my promise to you: \u201cNo matter who you are, as a woman, you\u2019re affected by men; alright? You either have one\u2014you\u2019re married to one; or you want one; or you had one and now don\u2019t want one; alright?\u201d But all of us are affected. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want to do is to biblically lay out what God has commanded them to be. If they will hear that, then everybody is better off. But here\u2019s the deal I need you to make with yourself\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if you try to play the role of the Holy Spirit in any of this, you will absolutely destroy everything that the Holy Spirit works through the Word tonight. If we get in the car tonight and you\u2019re like, \u201cDid you hear him?\u201d It\u2019s just going to go badly for you. I know some of you are stronger; and you\u2019re not going to listen to me here because you\u2019re, \u201cMake him listen.\u201d I\u2019ll accept your apology next week. Let\u2019s go!\u2014alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis, Chapters 1, 2, and 3\u2014we\u2019ll read some of 3. I\u2019m not going to read all of 1 and 2\u2014says that God creates the entire universe. He creates it rhythmically, and beautifully, and everything is functioning where it\u2019s supposed to function\u2014everything is working perfectly. He creates the earth. On the majority of the earth, He puts this wild, untamed, rugged landscape. In the middle, the Scriptures say, He plants the garden\u2014the Garden of Eden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithin Eden, everything is trimmed. It\u2019s nice, and it works well. It's not untamed, and wild, and rugged like the rest of the earth. He plants that there. Then the Scriptures say that He makes man and woman in His image\u2014He makes them <em>both<\/em>. This is pretty key because, the truth is\u2014men and women are created equally <em>but<\/em> distinctively; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what happens\u2014God creates the man to be a cultivator; alright? Here's what I mean by that: God creates men\u2014all men, alright?\u2014to build and create. After we build and create, to continue the growth of whatever that is\u2014we were designed for it. We were designed to cultivate our wives\u2014to love, nurture, encourage, and build in them so they would be, as Psalm 128 says\u2014they would be a fruitful vine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGo to Genesis 3, verse 17: \u201cAnd to Adam, He said, \u2018Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, \u2018You shall not eat of it,\u2019\u201d\u2014now listen to this\u2014\u201c\u2019cursed is the ground because of you. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you and you shall eat the plants of the field.\u2019\u201d\u2014verse 19: \u201c\u2026by the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread till you return to the ground for out of it you were taken; for you are dust and to dust you shall return.\u201d Now, I want to point this out to you\u2014this is going to be heavy stuff\u2014I\u2019m just warning you, out of the gate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod, when He curses man because of sin, not only curses man but curses what he was supposed to cultivate so that, even when a man tries to cultivate what's right, it wars against him. So, when a man tries to build and cultivate and work with even good, positive things, those things that he's trying to cultivate will, at times, instead of producing fruit, produce thorns and thistles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you an example. If you\u2019ve really tried to speak life into your children \/ if you really try to talk about the glories of Christ \/ even if you\u2019ve just tried to lead them in a way that's good and positive\u2014how difficult is that? If you\u2019ve noticed, most of us have these things in our minds: \u201cOoh, I\u2019m going to do this and all the bills get paid,\u201d and, \u201cI\u2019m going to do that; and that\u2019s going to get done, and this is going to get done,\u201d but it never happens. Like every time you're <em>just<\/em> there, the transmission fails or something; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens in young men is\u2014young men are like: \u201cI\u2019m going to get a woman that ain\u2019t that much work, and a new house, and a new car. Then I\u2019ll be set.\u201d That\u2019s a cool little fantasy world you develop there in your head. I'll tell you\u2014that there's nothing, this side of eternity, that's not a fixer-upper\u2014nothing!\u2014no woman, no car, no house\u2014there\u2019s nothing, this side of death, that doesn\u2019t require effort and work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat takes us to the hard part. Let\u2019s go over to Ephesians 5. We\u2019ll pick it up in 25: \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of the water with the Word so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; that she might be holy and without blemish,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014okay, so here's what He throws on the man. He comes to the woman and says, \u201cIn this relationship that I\u2019ve built out, you\u2019re going to submit to Christ-like leadership.\u201d And then He goes over to the man and says, \u201cYou\u2019re going to love your wife like Christ loved the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you start running through it\u2014how does Christ love the church? He rescues her. He saves her. He becomes sin for her. He has His body ripped apart for her. He does it all, not because the bride asked for it, but he <em>initiates<\/em> it on His own. What does this mean? It means the mantle on men is to initiate\u2014in their marriage\u2014initiate. Initiate the fight for wholeness. Initiate the fight for healing. Initiate. Initiate. Initiate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFar too many women are the initiators in relationships and homes. Let me tell you why I think this is such a big deal and why I think it's nearly impossible without the Holy Spirit\u2019s power. Let me give you just a quick example of what I\u2019m talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so the Bible is really clear that one of the worst things you can do, as a married couple, is let the sun go down on your anger; right? [Laughter] The puppy is just burning\u2014where does that stuff come from? I swear\u2014that is nowhere in my notes. [Laughter] The puppy was just howling and screaming. [Laughter] She\u2019s like, \u201cOh, ho, ho.\u201d [Laughter] I mean, you don\u2019t know who I married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what I would tell you, biblically\u2014here is what I would [Laughter] \u2014I apologize! [Laughter] Here is what I tell you, biblically\u2014if your wife, in that moment\u201410:30\/11:00\/midnight\u2014is facing that way and you\u2019re facing this way\u2014and she is 99.999 percent to blame, it falls on you to roll over, tap her on the shoulder, and say: \u201cI don\u2019t want to go to go to bed like this. I need to apologize for my .0001 percent.\u201d [Laughter] Okay? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust for the record, I wouldn't use numbers; but I would do this: \u201cLauren, before we go to sleep tonight\u2014I know you\u2019re angry \/ I\u2019m angry. I need to apologize for how I handled what happened earlier.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlright\u2014First Corinthians 16\u2014let\u2019s learn how to walk in this. How do we walk in this?\u2014being cultivators\u2014but finding all that we are supposed to cultivate war against us\u2014whether that be business, whether that be family, whether that be wife, whether that be child, whether that be friendships and relationships. We\u2019ve been called to cultivate, and it\u2019s going to war against us. There are going to be times where it produces thorns and thistles versus fruit. So, how do we walk in this deal that God\u2019s created? Look at this\u2014Chapter 16, verse 13: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s always an ego shot anytime you hear, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you act like a man; alright?\u201d It\u2019s just a little shot to the man: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so how do we walk in this system where we\u2019re called, by God, to be cultivators but what we\u2019ve been called to cultivate will, at times, war against us? Alright, it\u2019s in this text: \u201cBe watchful.\u201d Here\u2019s what I think this text means\u2014everyone of us, as men, know where we are weak. If you say you don\u2019t tonight, I would call you a liar. Alright? We know if we have got lust issues. We know if we have got fear issues. We know if we have got pride issues. We know if we have got anger issues. We know where we are weak. We know what keeps us from being the kind of men that God has called us to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, the text says, \u201cBe watchful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where it\u2019s going to come \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where you\u2019re going to get attacked \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where you\u2019re going to get overwhelmed \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s how you\u2019re going to stumble and fall, then be watchful of that area of your life. Build defenses in that area of your life: \u201cBe watchful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike if, when you get tired, everything unravels for you, be watchful\u2014maybe you shouldn\u2019t watch the daily show \/ maybe you should go to bed. Maybe the second <em>SportsCenter,<\/em> right after you finish watching the first one, isn\u2019t a necessity\u2014maybe sleep is. Maybe, instead of living off of red meat and coffee\u2014maybe, God forbid, you eat a vegetable and drink some water\u2014I didn\u2019t go crazy \/ I didn\u2019t say, \u201cDo Pilates.\u201d I\u2019m just saying, \u201cTry a green bean once in a while,\u201d if you getting tired is the thing that starts unraveling\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou watching TV makes you unravel. Then, \u201cCome on, man, be watchful.\u201d This isn\u2019t a game! Do you think this is a game?\u2014be watchful. You <em>know <\/em>where you\u2019re weak \/ everybody does\u2014be watchful. If you know where they\u2019re going to attack from \/ if you <em>know <\/em>where the attack is going to come, wouldn\u2019t it make sense to build some defenses there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWalk in what you believe because\u2014if you\u2019re giving God and the gospel lip service, but you\u2019re not really walking in it, then, good luck. I don\u2019t even know why you do that. That, to me, is church as a hobby; and I think church might be one of the lamest hobbies in the history of the world\u2014get a boat. Seriously, boats are great \/ boats are fun. You can wakeboard behind them, or ski behind them, or the inner tube is great if you are little. Get a boat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t understand\u2014walk in it. Stand firm in our faith. What good is all the power that God has offered us if we\u2019re not ever going to tap into it? \u201cAct like a man,\u201d he says; and then he follows it up with, \u201c<em>Be strong<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is Matt Chandler from The Village Church, in Dallas, challenging us, as men. I have to tell you\u2014listening back to this message today, I\u2019m reminded of the first time I heard it. I was driving in Northern California on my way to a father\/son camp with my son, David. We listened to these messages. There was one point where I turned off the message, and we were talking about something. Then, I just didn\u2019t turn it right back on. David, after a minute, said, \u201cAre we going to keep listening?\u201d And I thought, \u201cCha-ching!\u201d right there; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was tracking with what Matt was saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Matt communicates to folks of all ages\u2014but, you know, that\u2019s a good application for this broadcast, Bob\u2014for some dads to get this and maybe select a little play time on the car radio on your way to, maybe, a sporting event or something you're going to together\u2014but play if for your sons and talk about what it means to be a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like what he said there, at the end, because 1 Corinthians 16: 13 and 14 is one of my favorite passages. It is a charge to men to stand firm, as Matt was talking about.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there a lot of men today, Bob, who make manhood into a hobby\u2014it\u2019s just a game. It\u2019s not the real deal. It takes God to make a man a real man. That\u2019s what Matt is challenging men to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you: \u201cIf a guy is trying to be God's man in his home, and in his marriage, and with his kids, and his wife is just not on the same page or not responding to him, how would you counsel that guy?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great question. I want to talk about men, and I want to talk about masculinity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to talk about what being a man <em>is<\/em>, and I want to talk about what God created men <em>for<\/em>; alright? It\u2019s a complex subject. I know a lot of women are like: \u201cIt\u2019s not complex; alright!? Feed him \/ hug him\u2014he\u2019s fine!\u201d\u2014alright? I know there are those of you who don\u2019t think it\u2019s\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut did you know that 1 Corinthians 11 said that \u201cmen are the glory of God\u201d? That\u2019s a really big, broad, massive thing. So, if you\u2019re a woman in here, we have addressed women. So we\u2019re going to do men now. I don\u2019t want to offend you. I\u2019m not trying to offend you in any way, but here\u2019s my promise to you: \u201cNo matter who you are, as a woman, you\u2019re affected by men; alright? You either have one\u2014you\u2019re married to one; or you want one; or you had one and now don\u2019t want one; alright?\u201d But all of us are affected. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want to do is to biblically lay out what God has commanded them to be. If they will hear that, then everybody is better off. But here\u2019s the deal I need you to make with yourself\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if you try to play the role of the Holy Spirit in any of this, you will absolutely destroy everything that the Holy Spirit works through the Word tonight. If we get in the car tonight and you\u2019re like, \u201cDid you hear him?\u201d It\u2019s just going to go badly for you. I know some of you are stronger; and you\u2019re not going to listen to me here because you\u2019re, \u201cMake him listen.\u201d I\u2019ll accept your apology next week. Let\u2019s go!\u2014alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis, Chapters 1, 2, and 3\u2014we\u2019ll read some of 3. I\u2019m not going to read all of 1 and 2\u2014says that God creates the entire universe. He creates it rhythmically, and beautifully, and everything is functioning where it\u2019s supposed to function\u2014everything is working perfectly. He creates the earth. On the majority of the earth, He puts this wild, untamed, rugged landscape. In the middle, the Scriptures say, He plants the garden\u2014the Garden of Eden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithin Eden, everything is trimmed. It\u2019s nice, and it works well. It's not untamed, and wild, and rugged like the rest of the earth. He plants that there. Then the Scriptures say that He makes man and woman in His image\u2014He makes them <em>both<\/em>. This is pretty key because, the truth is\u2014men and women are created equally <em>but<\/em> distinctively; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what happens\u2014God creates the man to be a cultivator; alright? Here's what I mean by that: God creates men\u2014all men, alright?\u2014to build and create. After we build and create, to continue the growth of whatever that is\u2014we were designed for it. We were designed to cultivate our wives\u2014to love, nurture, encourage, and build in them so they would be, as Psalm 128 says\u2014they would be a fruitful vine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGo to Genesis 3, verse 17: \u201cAnd to Adam, He said, \u2018Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, \u2018You shall not eat of it,\u2019\u201d\u2014now listen to this\u2014\u201c\u2019cursed is the ground because of you. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you and you shall eat the plants of the field.\u2019\u201d\u2014verse 19: \u201c\u2026by the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread till you return to the ground for out of it you were taken; for you are dust and to dust you shall return.\u201d Now, I want to point this out to you\u2014this is going to be heavy stuff\u2014I\u2019m just warning you, out of the gate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod, when He curses man because of sin, not only curses man but curses what he was supposed to cultivate so that, even when a man tries to cultivate what's right, it wars against him. So, when a man tries to build and cultivate and work with even good, positive things, those things that he's trying to cultivate will, at times, instead of producing fruit, produce thorns and thistles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll give you an example. If you\u2019ve really tried to speak life into your children \/ if you really try to talk about the glories of Christ \/ even if you\u2019ve just tried to lead them in a way that's good and positive\u2014how difficult is that? If you\u2019ve noticed, most of us have these things in our minds: \u201cOoh, I\u2019m going to do this and all the bills get paid,\u201d and, \u201cI\u2019m going to do that; and that\u2019s going to get done, and this is going to get done,\u201d but it never happens. Like every time you're <em>just<\/em> there, the transmission fails or something; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens in young men is\u2014young men are like: \u201cI\u2019m going to get a woman that ain\u2019t that much work, and a new house, and a new car. Then I\u2019ll be set.\u201d That\u2019s a cool little fantasy world you develop there in your head. I'll tell you\u2014that there's nothing, this side of eternity, that's not a fixer-upper\u2014nothing!\u2014no woman, no car, no house\u2014there\u2019s nothing, this side of death, that doesn\u2019t require effort and work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat takes us to the hard part. Let\u2019s go over to Ephesians 5. We\u2019ll pick it up in 25: \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of the water with the Word so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; that she might be holy and without blemish,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014okay, so here's what He throws on the man. He comes to the woman and says, \u201cIn this relationship that I\u2019ve built out, you\u2019re going to submit to Christ-like leadership.\u201d And then He goes over to the man and says, \u201cYou\u2019re going to love your wife like Christ loved the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you start running through it\u2014how does Christ love the church? He rescues her. He saves her. He becomes sin for her. He has His body ripped apart for her. He does it all, not because the bride asked for it, but he <em>initiates<\/em> it on His own. What does this mean? It means the mantle on men is to initiate\u2014in their marriage\u2014initiate. Initiate the fight for wholeness. Initiate the fight for healing. Initiate. Initiate. Initiate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFar too many women are the initiators in relationships and homes. Let me tell you why I think this is such a big deal and why I think it's nearly impossible without the Holy Spirit\u2019s power. Let me give you just a quick example of what I\u2019m talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so the Bible is really clear that one of the worst things you can do, as a married couple, is let the sun go down on your anger; right? The reason that is\u2014is because you\u2019ll lie in bed\u2014she\u2019ll face that way and you\u2019ll face this way\u2014and you\u2019ll just let that root of bitterness start growing down. In fact, you\u2019ll help it go down\u2014you\u2019ll drill it. You\u2019ll be like, \u201cOh, she doesn\u2019t respect me\u201d; and she\u2019ll be doing the same. The root of bitterness will just grow and grow and grow. It will grow and grow and grow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says: \u201cDon\u2019t let that happen. You need to nip it in the bud, man. You need to not go to bed angry. You need to try and resolve it before you go to bed at night.\u201d I think the weight of that falls on the man. I know some of you are like: \u201cYou do not know my wife, Chandler! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ve seen your wife\u2014she sings, she looks so beautiful, she\u2019s sweet.\u201d Listen, two days ago, I saw fire shoot out of my wife\u2019s eyes and kill a puppy. [Laughter] The puppy is just burning\u2014where does that stuff come from? I swear\u2014that is nowhere in my notes. [Laughter] The puppy was just howling and screaming. [Laughter] She\u2019s like, \u201cOh, ho, ho.\u201d [Laughter] I mean, you don\u2019t know who I married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what I would tell you, biblically\u2014here is what I would [Laughter] \u2014I apologize! [Laughter] Here is what I tell you, biblically\u2014if your wife, in that moment\u201410:30\/11:00\/midnight\u2014is facing that way and you\u2019re facing this way\u2014and she is 99.999 percent to blame, it falls on you to roll over, tap her on the shoulder, and say: \u201cI don\u2019t want to go to go to bed like this. I need to apologize for my .0001 percent.\u201d [Laughter] Okay? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust for the record, I wouldn't use numbers; but I would do this: \u201cLauren, before we go to sleep tonight\u2014I know you\u2019re angry \/ I\u2019m angry. I need to apologize for how I handled what happened earlier.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlright\u2014First Corinthians 16\u2014let\u2019s learn how to walk in this. How do we walk in this?\u2014being cultivators\u2014but finding all that we are supposed to cultivate war against us\u2014whether that be business, whether that be family, whether that be wife, whether that be child, whether that be friendships and relationships. We\u2019ve been called to cultivate, and it\u2019s going to war against us. There are going to be times where it produces thorns and thistles versus fruit. So, how do we walk in this deal that God\u2019s created? Look at this\u2014Chapter 16, verse 13: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s always an ego shot anytime you hear, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you act like a man; alright?\u201d It\u2019s just a little shot to the man: \u201cBe watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, so how do we walk in this system where we\u2019re called, by God, to be cultivators but what we\u2019ve been called to cultivate will, at times, war against us? Alright, it\u2019s in this text: \u201cBe watchful.\u201d Here\u2019s what I think this text means\u2014everyone of us, as men, know where we are weak. If you say you don\u2019t tonight, I would call you a liar. Alright? We know if we have got lust issues. We know if we have got fear issues. We know if we have got pride issues. We know if we have got anger issues. We know where we are weak. We know what keeps us from being the kind of men that God has called us to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, the text says, \u201cBe watchful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where it\u2019s going to come \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where you\u2019re going to get attacked \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s where you\u2019re going to get overwhelmed \/ if you <em>know<\/em> that\u2019s how you\u2019re going to stumble and fall, then be watchful of that area of your life. Build defenses in that area of your life: \u201cBe watchful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike if, when you get tired, everything unravels for you, be watchful\u2014maybe you shouldn\u2019t watch the daily show \/ maybe you should go to bed. Maybe the second <em>SportsCenter,<\/em> right after you finish watching the first one, isn\u2019t a necessity\u2014maybe sleep is. Maybe, instead of living off of red meat and coffee\u2014maybe, God forbid, you eat a vegetable and drink some water\u2014I didn\u2019t go crazy \/ I didn\u2019t say, \u201cDo Pilates.\u201d I\u2019m just saying, \u201cTry a green bean once in a while,\u201d if you getting tired is the thing that starts unraveling\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou watching TV makes you unravel. Then, \u201cCome on, man, be watchful.\u201d This isn\u2019t a game! Do you think this is a game?\u2014be watchful. You <em>know <\/em>where you\u2019re weak \/ everybody does\u2014be watchful. If you know where they\u2019re going to attack from \/ if you <em>know <\/em>where the attack is going to come, wouldn\u2019t it make sense to build some defenses there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWalk in what you believe because\u2014if you\u2019re giving God and the gospel lip service, but you\u2019re not really walking in it, then, good luck. I don\u2019t even know why you do that. That, to me, is church as a hobby; and I think church might be one of the lamest hobbies in the history of the world\u2014get a boat. Seriously, boats are great \/ boats are fun. You can wakeboard behind them, or ski behind them, or the inner tube is great if you are little. Get a boat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t understand\u2014walk in it. Stand firm in our faith. What good is all the power that God has offered us if we\u2019re not ever going to tap into it? \u201cAct like a man,\u201d he says; and then he follows it up with, \u201c<em>Be strong<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is Matt Chandler from The Village Church, in Dallas, challenging us, as men. I have to tell you\u2014listening back to this message today, I\u2019m reminded of the first time I heard it. I was driving in Northern California on my way to a father\/son camp with my son, David. We listened to these messages. There was one point where I turned off the message, and we were talking about something. Then, I just didn\u2019t turn it right back on. David, after a minute, said, \u201cAre we going to keep listening?\u201d And I thought, \u201cCha-ching!\u201d right there; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was tracking with what Matt was saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Matt communicates to folks of all ages\u2014but, you know, that\u2019s a good application for this broadcast, Bob\u2014for some dads to get this and maybe select a little play time on the car radio on your way to, maybe, a sporting event or something you're going to together\u2014but play if for your sons and talk about what it means to be a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like what he said there, at the end, because 1 Corinthians 16: 13 and 14 is one of my favorite passages. It is a charge to men to stand firm, as Matt was talking about.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there a lot of men today, Bob, who make manhood into a hobby\u2014it\u2019s just a game. It\u2019s not the real deal. It takes God to make a man a real man. That\u2019s what Matt is challenging men to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you: \u201cIf a guy is trying to be God's man in his home, and in his marriage, and with his kids, and his wife is just not on the same page or not responding to him, how would you counsel that guy?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great question. You know, hold that question, though, because Matt addresses that question in a little piece we\u2019re going to play in just a minute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright. So, our first couple of years of marriage were very, very difficult. It wasn\u2019t just my junk; she had some junk too. If you put two dysfunctional people in a house together, it goes badly; right? Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord was really, really merciful.
