She grew up in a Christian home; but still, there was something that drove her to crave the attention and the affection of a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I could tell that these guys were only after one thing. They didn\u2019t truly\u2014they didn\u2019t know me\u2014they didn\u2019t care to know me\u2014so I set my eyes on the most godly guy that I could find. But you know what was interesting is\u2014I felt\u2014during that season, I felt like there had been real transformation in my heart because, suddenly, I was liking godly guys instead of non-Christians\u2014but nothing had really changed. My heart was still the exact same. I was still\u2014I lived for a look, or a smile, or a laugh. There was really no life at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, August 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. I\u2019m thinking back to when our girls were teenagers. It seemed, to me, that when they started to develop an interest in boys, they did not come home and sit at the dinner table and say, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve started to take a liking to a particular guy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They didn\u2019t spill the beans? They weren\u2019t forthcoming with a lot of information?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Seems to me like we had to be the Federal Bureau of Investigation and have all kinds of agents, out in the field, getting information and feeding it back to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we have a guest on today\u2019s broadcast\u2014who has come clean. The book is entitled\u2014you\u2019re going to like this book, folks\u2014<em>Confessions of a Boy-Crazy Girl<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaula Hendricks joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Paula, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Thank you. Good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paula\u2019s a graduate of Moody, back in 2005\u2014works at <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> with our friend, Nancy Leigh DeMoss. You confess, early in your book, that as you started the book, you actually found yourself changing the message, as you wrote it. I really like this because I think this is good stuff for every single person\u2014whether they\u2019re ten, eleven, twelve, all the way up to women in their 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s, who are single. This is good for men and women both. Share with our listeners how you changed your mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I dreamed of writing this book for probably about five years. Throughout my journals, I would write: \u201cGod, please, some day, can I write a book for boy-crazy girls? I know I\u2019m not ready yet, but some day.\u201d At one point, I felt like the Lord had taught me enough, and I had a life message, and I could share. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, there was a guy in my life. I don\u2019t know that it was so much him, but it was so much of how I was doing things different. For the first time in my life, I wasn\u2019t manipulating\u2014I was praying. I was having friends hold me accountable. I was waiting on God \/ I was trusting God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really felt like: \u201cWell, the Lord\u2019s done such a transformation in my life. Of course, now that I\u2019m doing everything right\u2014of course, He\u2019s going to bless me with this relationship. It\u2019s going to end in marriage. I\u2019m going to have this great story of \u201cfrom the bad and the ugly\u201d to \u201cthe dream fulfilled.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t go like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>It was pretty brutal, actually! He was a good friend. I could not understand why he would come in and out of my life. He traveled for business. When he would come back into town, he would always want to get together. I would always think, \u201cOkay, this is the time he\u2019s going to tell me that he\u2019s ready to pursue me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would hang out, have a great time, and he would leave town, and\u2014nothing. To make a long story short\u2014because there were a lot more ins and outs\u2014but in the end, he ended up telling me, \u201cI think you\u2019re an amazing woman of God, but the spark comes and goes.\u201d He just wasn\u2019t attracted to me. On the last broadcast, we were talking about my struggle with beauty. That hit where it hurt, for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you somehow equated that\u2014at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. Actually, I can see now that it was\u2014I like this term, \u201csevere mercy.\u201d It really was a severe mercy because it made me wrestle again with, \u201cLord, am I beautiful?\u201d I mean, that\u2019s just the cry of most female hearts\u2014is, \u201cI want to be beautiful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne morning, I felt like the Lord really met with me. I was getting ready, putting on my makeup. I looked outside the window; and there was just this gorgeous, gorgeous purple flowering tree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like the Lord said to me, in that moment\u2014not audibly of course\u2014but: \u201cI make beautiful things.\u201d After that, I felt like He just reminded me, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to listen to his voice.\u201d I was reminded of that passage where Jesus says: \u201cMy sheep know My voice. They don\u2019t follow other people\u2019s voices; they just follow Mine.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, I just chose: \u201cOkay, I have not believed, my whole life, that I am beautiful; but I am going to choose to believe that You say that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am going to tune out the other voices and hone in on Yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>As you became content with your life and where God had you\u2014at the same time, you were becoming gripped that God had a purpose for you and a mission for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Amazing! God\u2019s timing is so cool because\u2014 the day before\u2014this guy called and invited me to come visit him and some friends. This is the trip where it all kind of went down and things ended. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the day before he called, Moody Publishers called. They had been reading my blog posts. They wanted to know if I would write a book for teens. I remember, through that season, just praying: \u201cLord, what do You have? Do You have a relationship with this guy\u201d\u2014which I thought God was doing\u2014\u201cor do You want me to write a book?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen things went down with this guy\u2014it didn\u2019t turn out like I thought they would\u2014I just <em>knew<\/em> that all of the pain in my life\u2014that God wanted to use it to reach out to other girls with similar pain. My prayer, as I wrote the book, was just that God would raise up an army of girls who aren\u2019t consumed and obsessed with getting a guy. I feel like: \u201cWow! Life is so much more exciting\u2014not that I don\u2019t want to be married\u2014but life is so much more exciting with God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not in a holding pattern\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014waiting to land to get on with life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No! No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re living life now, according to His purposes that He has for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes\u2014living real adventures with God. It\u2019s so exciting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what I wanted our single listeners to hear\u2014and frankly, the moms and dads, who are raising their sons and daughters. This sense of instilling a God-ordained sense of mission in your children\u2019s lives\u2014to put them in touch with God so they get to know Him through the person of Jesus Christ\u2014but then begin to pray about and think about, \u201cWhy has God got you here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>And you know what I love, Dennis, is\u2014as I read stories in the Bible\u2014I see that God chooses how He wants us to glorify Him. For example, that blind man, who was born blind from birth. I think it was Jesus\u2019 disciples\u2014asked, \u201cSo was it him who sinned or was it his parents who sinned, that he was born blind?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>And Jesus says, \u201cNo, it\u2019s so that\u201d\u2014I can\u2019t remember the exact words\u2014\u201cthe power of God might be seen through his life.\u201d I just think you don\u2019t have to figure out how you\u2019re going to glorify God. You just need to offer up your brokenness to Him because He takes our weakness and our brokenness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s how He just is strong\u2014and it\u2019s crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And He delights in doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask you about the football player in high school because that relationship \/ that boyfriend\u2014again, you\u2019re growing up in a home where Mom and Dad are saying, \u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to date\u2014none of this.\u201d You\u2019re sneaking around. That boyfriend\u2014there was a boundary that got crossed with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started kissing; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. Actually, with him, he pursued me my freshman year. I managed to hold off. That was just after I had broken up with the druggie. I was trying, with all my self-will and power, to resist him; but sophomore year came around, and he was interested again. Oh, my goodness!\u2014like, \u201cWhat girl can resist a football player?\u201d\u2014you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. He was a little older. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He was a little older. He had a cool car with tinted windows, and he was a self-proclaimed player. He wore\u2014not that that\u2019s a good thing\u2014but I don\u2019t know why, but it was a draw\u2014he wore\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you say \u201cplayer,\u201d you\u2019re talking about he was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He was a ladies\u2019 man. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He wore cool clothes, and he was interested in me. A friend told me that he made our initials in Spanish class with Sweet Tarts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How can you resist a guy who does that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>How can you resist that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, hey\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So here\u2019s my question: \u201cDid he know Jesus?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did that matter to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re mom and dad had no idea any of this was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just wondering how many parents are listening to us right now going, \u201cI wonder\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026if I need to do a little espionage work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026if we need to call the FBI to figure out what\u2019s going on with my daughter.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>You know what? You can bypass the FBI because, actually, my parents prayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey started to find out some things; and they prayed, \u201cLord, would You help us to find out when she\u2019s doing something?\u201d He answered their prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had that happen; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, we had some classics\u2014we had some classics. One time, we gave our daughter <em>very strict<\/em> boundaries for when we went out of town. When we got back, we asked; and we inspected the boundary: \u201cDid you go anywhere?\u201d \u201cOh, no\u2014I haven\u2019t been anywhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, on the following weekend, we went to church. I locked my keys in our van. All six kids, out in the parking lot after church\u2014had to call a locksmith to come and get into our van. The locksmith comes. He points to our daughter and said: \u201cDidn\u2019t I see you last weekend? Did your car\u2014it was broken down over in such-and-such?\u201d It was like, \u201cBusted!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod feels sorry for parents. He loves it when parents will pray the prayer of a helpless parent: \u201cLord, help me catch them doing what\u2019s right, and help me catch them when they\u2019re doing something wrong that\u2019s going to destroy their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When your parents found out that some of this was going on, did they tighten up\u2014were you grounded? I mean, what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I remember\u2014I could tell that they no longer trusted me. So, there was a lot more questioning\u2014there was a lot more driving by to see if I was okay. I don\u2019t actually know if I knew that, in the moment, or if I learned that years\u2019 later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Trust is an important thing; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh man, it took me years\u2014years\u2014to rebuild my parents\u2019 trust. I remember being frustrated by that, as a teenager, and thinking that it should just come a lot more quickly and naturally. Of course, it doesn\u2019t. You have to prove yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; I think there\u2019s a principle here\u2014parents need to be careful\u2014when there has been a major breach of trust\u2014of letting their kids out of the penalty box too quickly. They have to learn how to rebuild that trust and have a track record that\u2019s worthy of their parents\u2019 trust again. Do you remember when that happened with your parents? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No. It was such a gradual process. Honestly, I didn\u2019t deserve their trust for many years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because you kept sneaking around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, even after they knew stuff was going on\u2014and I want to go back to the kiss\u2014because the first kiss turned into lots of kissing; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. So, we were in his car. <em>Kiss Me<\/em> came onto the radio\u2014I hate that song! [Laughter] Of course, we just followed what the song said and kissed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>After that, obviously, I wasn\u2019t allowed to do a lot; but, sometimes, school would let out at like 2:18. I would forget\u2014\u201cforget\u201d\u2014to tell my parents that we were getting out of school early. Then I would go over to his house\u2014and yes, we would make out in his bedroom, on his bed\u2014very, very compromising situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Without his parents there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>His parents knew. Yes. His mom\u2014yes! They were there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>They were there\u2014they didn\u2019t care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing I want parents to hear, as they\u2019re listening to this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t assume that other parents have anywhere near the moral boundaries that you have, as a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh no\u2014no way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, after things broke up with the football player\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes, and things broke up with him because he wanted more. Praise the Lord\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014by His grace and with my strict upbringing, I wasn\u2019t quite ready to give him everything. When he figured that out, he broke up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So the next guy that you kind of fell for\u2014did you go straight to kissing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No, quite the opposite, actually. I\u2019d just experienced how incredibly painful it was. I could tell that these guys were only after one thing. They didn\u2019t know me\u2014they didn\u2019t care to know me. So, I thought, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to do the spiritual thing,\u201d\u2014like, \u201cI am so done with that!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI set my eyes on the most godly guy that I could find. Of course, there wasn\u2019t going to be kissing with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, what was interesting is\u2014I felt, during that season\u2014I felt like there had been real transformation in my heart because, suddenly, I was liking godly guys instead of non-Christians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But nothing had really changed. My heart was still the exact same. I was still\u2014I lived for a look, or a smile, or a laugh. It was really no life at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I want to take you\u2014because we\u2019ve followed this journey from you, at age seven, wanting a guy to like you, through the junior high years, into high school. There\u2019s been a little bit of a roller coaster, along the way; but how is Paula today different than Paula in junior high, Paula in senior high, Paula in college, and even Paula as a young single adult\u2014where boys were really at the center of all of this? How are you different? How are you thinking differently today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Everything is different. That doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m perfect. That doesn\u2019t mean I still don\u2019t struggle, but I want guys to be attracted to Jesus through my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to point them to Him. I don\u2019t want to trip them up and distract them from Him. I no longer walk around, lying all the time, and hating the other girls because they\u2019re competition. I now have way more girl friends than guy friends\u2014and just enjoy deep, meaningful relationships with them. Wow! I don\u2019t really even know where to start because it\u2019s not just outward behavior that\u2019s changed\u2014it\u2019s that my desires have changed\u2014and that\u2019s all Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you still scan a room? I mean, at church, do you still look around and go, \u201cAny new guys here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh man. I do have a confession because, just probably about a month ago\u2014I go to a family-oriented church\u2014and there\u2019s no one else my age. Suddenly, a couple of guys came; and they\u2019re kind of around my age, and cute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI confess that, Saturday night\u2014I\u2019m a girl who, as you can see, I don\u2019t paint my nails. I don\u2019t have time for a lot of that stuff; but I put on base coat, and normal fingernail polish, and top coat. I laid out my clothes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait, wait\u2014wait. I didn\u2019t even know there was such stuff\u2014really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes; yes. Three layers, Bob. [Laughter] And then I changed purses\u2014which I do, normally, like once every three years\u2014and I got ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got ready for Sunday morning, and it wasn\u2019t getting spiritually ready for Sunday morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No, no. No; in fact, I probably missed my time with the Lord because of spending so much time doing this. I was like: \u201cOh, Lord! I don\u2019t even know what to say\u201d; but it was just humorous because\u2014I walk in, and I scan the room. They\u2019re nowhere. I\u2019m like: \u201cUmm\u2014surely they\u2019re here, and I just don\u2019t see them. I\u2019ll see them after service.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You held your nails up in the air. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I was\u2014yes. End of the service, they weren\u2019t there. Turns out they\u2019re out of town\u2014both of them. I was like, \u201cOkay, Lord, next Sunday, we\u2019re going without painted nails.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back to basics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>We\u2019re back to basics, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, we\u2019re laughing about this. There is kind of a\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s humorous, but it\u2019s insightful. You give a quiz in your book about how to know if you are a boy-crazy girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh yes\u2014Page 22; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. You know, there are 14 questions. We\u2019ll put these up on FamilyLifeToday.com and let folks get them there, but would you just real quickly go through these? Just see how many of these\u2014if I\u2019ve a young person listening to this, right now\u2014see if she is a boy-crazy girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Okay. Well, I just have to say this is an auto-biographical list. Also, it\u2019s not comprehensive. There are other tell-tale signs of being boy-crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure. Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But this is what it looked like for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>In a room full of people, do you always know where \u201che\u201d is? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre boys your number one favorite topic of conversation with your friends? I remember actually, whenever I would get together with adults, my number one question for them was, \u201cHow did you get together with your wife?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThree, do you often dress to catch a guy\u2019s attention? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you replace one crush with another, almost as soon as you realize that the first relationship isn\u2019t going anywhere? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you asked a guy out?\u2014that\u2019s the only one I haven\u2019t done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you have your eye on more than one guy at a time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you believe that you would finally be completely happy if you had a boyfriend? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you change your schedule or plans in order to bump into him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you tend to have more guy friends than girl friends? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re relaxing with a good book, movie, or song, do you pick those that are filled with ooey, gooey romance? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you journal or pray, are your pages or prayers filled with thoughts and requests about guys? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre you always trying to figure out which guys like you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you be willing to get a total makeover for a guy?\u2014and not the hair, makeup, new clothes kind\u2014but the \u201cI will change who I am, at my core, if that\u2019s what it takes to get you\u201d kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a pretty good list. And you said \u201cauto-biographical.\u201d You looked through that and you go: \u201cThat was true. Today, it\u2019s not true or less true\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Less true. Some days are better than others. Something that I pray, pretty much every morning, is this verse that says, \u201cSatisfy me with Your love that I may rejoice and be glad all my days.\u201d So, every day, I\u2019m saying, \u201cGod, if You don\u2019t satisfy me, I <em>know<\/em> that I\u2019m going to run back to my idols.\u201d It\u2019s just like the people of Israel\u2014they were always tearing down their altars and their idols\u2014and then, the next thing you know, they\u2019re building them back up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>So yes, I do that. Then the other prayer I pray, daily, is the one from Proverbs\u2014about, \u201cGod, help my eyes to look straight ahead,\u201d because most of my life\u2014and I still can today\u2014I\u2019m looking around for evidence of who\u2019s looking at me: \u201cDo they look like they\u2019re interested?\u201d\u2014things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paula, you\u2019ve been really honest about your relationship with your dad. I\u2019m going to be really honest with you. teenager, she was boy-crazy. She grew up in a Christian home; but still, there was something that drove her to crave the attention and the affection of a young man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I could tell that these guys were only after one thing. They didn\u2019t truly\u2014they didn\u2019t know me\u2014they didn\u2019t care to know me\u2014so I set my eyes on the most godly guy that I could find. But you know what was interesting is\u2014I felt\u2014during that season, I felt like there had been real transformation in my heart because, suddenly, I was liking godly guys instead of non-Christians\u2014but nothing had really changed. My heart was still the exact same. I was still\u2014I lived for a look, or a smile, or a laugh. There was really no life at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, August 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. I\u2019m thinking back to when our girls were teenagers. It seemed, to me, that when they started to develop an interest in boys, they did not come home and sit at the dinner table and say, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve started to take a liking to a particular guy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They didn\u2019t spill the beans? They weren\u2019t forthcoming with a lot of information?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Seems to me like we had to be the Federal Bureau of Investigation and have all kinds of agents, out in the field, getting information and feeding it back to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we have a guest on today\u2019s broadcast\u2014who has come clean. The book is entitled\u2014you\u2019re going to like this book, folks\u2014<em>Confessions of a Boy-Crazy Girl<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaula Hendricks joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Paula, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Thank you. Good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paula\u2019s a graduate of Moody, back in 2005\u2014works at <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> with our friend, Nancy Leigh DeMoss. You confess, early in your book, that as you started the book, you actually found yourself changing the message, as you wrote it. I really like this because I think this is good stuff for every single person\u2014whether they\u2019re ten, eleven, twelve, all the way up to women in their 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s, who are single. This is good for men and women both. Share with our listeners how you changed your mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I dreamed of writing this book for probably about five years. Throughout my journals, I would write: \u201cGod, please, some day, can I write a book for boy-crazy girls? I know I\u2019m not ready yet, but some day.\u201d At one point, I felt like the Lord had taught me enough, and I had a life message, and I could share. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, there was a guy in my life. I don\u2019t know that it was so much him, but it was so much of how I was doing things different. For the first time in my life, I wasn\u2019t manipulating\u2014I was praying. I was having friends hold me accountable. I was waiting on God \/ I was trusting God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really felt like: \u201cWell, the Lord\u2019s done such a transformation in my life. Of course, now that I\u2019m doing everything right\u2014of course, He\u2019s going to bless me with this relationship. It\u2019s going to end in marriage. I\u2019m going to have this great story of \u201cfrom the bad and the ugly\u201d to \u201cthe dream fulfilled.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But it didn\u2019t go like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>It was pretty brutal, actually! He was a good friend. I could not understand why he would come in and out of my life. He traveled for business. When he would come back into town, he would always want to get together. I would always think, \u201cOkay, this is the time he\u2019s going to tell me that he\u2019s ready to pursue me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would hang out, have a great time, and he would leave town, and\u2014nothing. To make a long story short\u2014because there were a lot more ins and outs\u2014but in the end, he ended up telling me, \u201cI think you\u2019re an amazing woman of God, but the spark comes and goes.\u201d He just wasn\u2019t attracted to me. On the last broadcast, we were talking about my struggle with beauty. That hit where it hurt, for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you somehow equated that\u2014at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. Actually, I can see now that it was\u2014I like this term, \u201csevere mercy.\u201d It really was a severe mercy because it made me wrestle again with, \u201cLord, am I beautiful?\u201d I mean, that\u2019s just the cry of most female hearts\u2014is, \u201cI want to be beautiful.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne morning, I felt like the Lord really met with me. I was getting ready, putting on my makeup. I looked outside the window; and there was just this gorgeous, gorgeous purple flowering tree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like the Lord said to me, in that moment\u2014not audibly of course\u2014but: \u201cI make beautiful things.\u201d After that, I felt like He just reminded me, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to listen to his voice.\u201d I was reminded of that passage where Jesus says: \u201cMy sheep know My voice. They don\u2019t follow other people\u2019s voices; they just follow Mine.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, I just chose: \u201cOkay, I have not believed, my whole life, that I am beautiful; but I am going to choose to believe that You say that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am going to tune out the other voices and hone in on Yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>As you became content with your life and where God had you\u2014at the same time, you were becoming gripped that God had a purpose for you and a mission for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Amazing! God\u2019s timing is so cool because\u2014 the day before\u2014this guy called and invited me to come visit him and some friends. This is the trip where it all kind of went down and things ended. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the day before he called, Moody Publishers called. They had been reading my blog posts. They wanted to know if I would write a book for teens. I remember, through that season, just praying: \u201cLord, what do You have? Do You have a relationship with this guy\u201d\u2014which I thought God was doing\u2014\u201cor do You want me to write a book?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen things went down with this guy\u2014it didn\u2019t turn out like I thought they would\u2014I just <em>knew<\/em> that all of the pain in my life\u2014that God wanted to use it to reach out to other girls with similar pain. My prayer, as I wrote the book, was just that God would raise up an army of girls who aren\u2019t consumed and obsessed with getting a guy. I feel like: \u201cWow! Life is so much more exciting\u2014not that I don\u2019t want to be married\u2014but life is so much more exciting with God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not in a holding pattern\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014waiting to land to get on with life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No! No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re living life now, according to His purposes that He has for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes\u2014living real adventures with God. It\u2019s so exciting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what I wanted our single listeners to hear\u2014and frankly, the moms and dads, who are raising their sons and daughters. This sense of instilling a God-ordained sense of mission in your children\u2019s lives\u2014to put them in touch with God so they get to know Him through the person of Jesus Christ\u2014but then begin to pray about and think about, \u201cWhy has God got you here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>And you know what I love, Dennis, is\u2014as I read stories in the Bible\u2014I see that God chooses how He wants us to glorify Him. For example, that blind man, who was born blind from birth. I think it was Jesus\u2019 disciples\u2014asked, \u201cSo was it him who sinned or was it his parents who sinned, that he was born blind?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>And Jesus says, \u201cNo, it\u2019s so that\u201d\u2014I can\u2019t remember the exact words\u2014\u201cthe power of God might be seen through his life.\u201d I just think you don\u2019t have to figure out how you\u2019re going to glorify God. You just need to offer up your brokenness to Him because He takes our weakness and our brokenness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s how He just is strong\u2014and it\u2019s crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And He delights in doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask you about the football player in high school because that relationship \/ that boyfriend\u2014again, you\u2019re growing up in a home where Mom and Dad are saying, \u201cYou\u2019re not supposed to date\u2014none of this.\u201d You\u2019re sneaking around. That boyfriend\u2014there was a boundary that got crossed with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started kissing; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. Actually, with him, he pursued me my freshman year. I managed to hold off. That was just after I had broken up with the druggie. I was trying, with all my self-will and power, to resist him; but sophomore year came around, and he was interested again. Oh, my goodness!\u2014like, \u201cWhat girl can resist a football player?\u201d\u2014you know? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. He was a little older. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He was a little older. He had a cool car with tinted windows, and he was a self-proclaimed player. He wore\u2014not that that\u2019s a good thing\u2014but I don\u2019t know why, but it was a draw\u2014he wore\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you say \u201cplayer,\u201d you\u2019re talking about he was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He was a ladies\u2019 man. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>He wore cool clothes, and he was interested in me. A friend told me that he made our initials in Spanish class with Sweet Tarts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How can you resist a guy who does that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>How can you resist that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, hey\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So here\u2019s my question: \u201cDid he know Jesus?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did that matter to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re mom and dad had no idea any of this was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just wondering how many parents are listening to us right now going, \u201cI wonder\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026if I need to do a little espionage work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026if we need to call the FBI to figure out what\u2019s going on with my daughter.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>You know what? You can bypass the FBI because, actually, my parents prayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey started to find out some things; and they prayed, \u201cLord, would You help us to find out when she\u2019s doing something?\u201d He answered their prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had that happen; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, we had some classics\u2014we had some classics. One time, we gave our daughter <em>very strict<\/em> boundaries for when we went out of town. When we got back, we asked; and we inspected the boundary: \u201cDid you go anywhere?\u201d \u201cOh, no\u2014I haven\u2019t been anywhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, on the following weekend, we went to church. I locked my keys in our van. All six kids, out in the parking lot after church\u2014had to call a locksmith to come and get into our van. The locksmith comes. He points to our daughter and said: \u201cDidn\u2019t I see you last weekend? Did your car\u2014it was broken down over in such-and-such?\u201d It was like, \u201cBusted!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod feels sorry for parents. He loves it when parents will pray the prayer of a helpless parent: \u201cLord, help me catch them doing what\u2019s right, and help me catch them when they\u2019re doing something wrong that\u2019s going to destroy their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When your parents found out that some of this was going on, did they tighten up\u2014were you grounded? I mean, what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I remember\u2014I could tell that they no longer trusted me. So, there was a lot more questioning\u2014there was a lot more driving by to see if I was okay. I don\u2019t actually know if I knew that, in the moment, or if I learned that years\u2019 later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Trust is an important thing; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh man, it took me years\u2014years\u2014to rebuild my parents\u2019 trust. I remember being frustrated by that, as a teenager, and thinking that it should just come a lot more quickly and naturally. Of course, it doesn\u2019t. You have to prove yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; I think there\u2019s a principle here\u2014parents need to be careful\u2014when there has been a major breach of trust\u2014of letting their kids out of the penalty box too quickly. They have to learn how to rebuild that trust and have a track record that\u2019s worthy of their parents\u2019 trust again. Do you remember when that happened with your parents? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No. It was such a gradual process. Honestly, I didn\u2019t deserve their trust for many years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because you kept sneaking around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, even after they knew stuff was going on\u2014and I want to go back to the kiss\u2014because the first kiss turned into lots of kissing; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes. So, we were in his car. <em>Kiss Me<\/em> came onto the radio\u2014I hate that song! [Laughter] Of course, we just followed what the song said and kissed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>After that, obviously, I wasn\u2019t allowed to do a lot; but, sometimes, school would let out at like 2:18. I would forget\u2014\u201cforget\u201d\u2014to tell my parents that we were getting out of school early. Then I would go over to his house\u2014and yes, we would make out in his bedroom, on his bed\u2014very, very compromising situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Without his parents there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>His parents knew. Yes. His mom\u2014yes! They were there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>They were there\u2014they didn\u2019t care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing I want parents to hear, as they\u2019re listening to this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t assume that other parents have anywhere near the moral boundaries that you have, as a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh no\u2014no way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, after things broke up with the football player\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes, and things broke up with him because he wanted more. Praise the Lord\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014by His grace and with my strict upbringing, I wasn\u2019t quite ready to give him everything. When he figured that out, he broke up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So the next guy that you kind of fell for\u2014did you go straight to kissing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No, quite the opposite, actually. I\u2019d just experienced how incredibly painful it was. I could tell that these guys were only after one thing. They didn\u2019t know me\u2014they didn\u2019t care to know me. So, I thought, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to do the spiritual thing,\u201d\u2014like, \u201cI am so done with that!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI set my eyes on the most godly guy that I could find. Of course, there wasn\u2019t going to be kissing with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, what was interesting is\u2014I felt, during that season\u2014I felt like there had been real transformation in my heart because, suddenly, I was liking godly guys instead of non-Christians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But nothing had really changed. My heart was still the exact same. I was still\u2014I lived for a look, or a smile, or a laugh. It was really no life at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I want to take you\u2014because we\u2019ve followed this journey from you, at age seven, wanting a guy to like you, through the junior high years, into high school. There\u2019s been a little bit of a roller coaster, along the way; but how is Paula today different than Paula in junior high, Paula in senior high, Paula in college, and even Paula as a young single adult\u2014where boys were really at the center of all of this? How are you different? How are you thinking differently today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Everything is different. That doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m perfect. That doesn\u2019t mean I still don\u2019t struggle, but I want guys to be attracted to Jesus through my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to point them to Him. I don\u2019t want to trip them up and distract them from Him. I no longer walk around, lying all the time, and hating the other girls because they\u2019re competition. I now have way more girl friends than guy friends\u2014and just enjoy deep, meaningful relationships with them. Wow! I don\u2019t really even know where to start because it\u2019s not just outward behavior that\u2019s changed\u2014it\u2019s that my desires have changed\u2014and that\u2019s all Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you still scan a room? I mean, at church, do you still look around and go, \u201cAny new guys here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Oh man. I do have a confession because, just probably about a month ago\u2014I go to a family-oriented church\u2014and there\u2019s no one else my age. Suddenly, a couple of guys came; and they\u2019re kind of around my age, and cute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI confess that, Saturday night\u2014I\u2019m a girl who, as you can see, I don\u2019t paint my nails. I don\u2019t have time for a lot of that stuff; but I put on base coat, and normal fingernail polish, and top coat. I laid out my clothes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait, wait\u2014wait. I didn\u2019t even know there was such stuff\u2014really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Yes; yes. Three layers, Bob. [Laughter] And then I changed purses\u2014which I do, normally, like once every three years\u2014and I got ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got ready for Sunday morning, and it wasn\u2019t getting spiritually ready for Sunday morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>No, no. No; in fact, I probably missed my time with the Lord because of spending so much time doing this. I was like: \u201cOh, Lord! I don\u2019t even know what to say\u201d; but it was just humorous because\u2014I walk in, and I scan the room. They\u2019re nowhere. I\u2019m like: \u201cUmm\u2014surely they\u2019re here, and I just don\u2019t see them. I\u2019ll see them after service.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You held your nails up in the air. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>I was\u2014yes. End of the service, they weren\u2019t there. Turns out they\u2019re out of town\u2014both of them. I was like, \u201cOkay, Lord, next Sunday, we\u2019re going without painted nails.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back to basics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>We\u2019re back to basics, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, we\u2019re laughing about this. There is kind of a\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s humorous, but it\u2019s insightful. You give a quiz in your book about how to know if you are a boy-crazy girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh yes\u2014Page 22; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. You know, there are 14 questions. We\u2019ll put these up on FamilyLifeToday.com and let folks get them there, but would you just real quickly go through these? Just see how many of these\u2014if I\u2019ve a young person listening to this, right now\u2014see if she is a boy-crazy girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Okay. Well, I just have to say this is an auto-biographical list. Also, it\u2019s not comprehensive. There are other tell-tale signs of being boy-crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure. Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>But this is what it looked like for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>In a room full of people, do you always know where \u201che\u201d is? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre boys your number one favorite topic of conversation with your friends? I remember actually, whenever I would get together with adults, my number one question for them was, \u201cHow did you get together with your wife?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThree, do you often dress to catch a guy\u2019s attention? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you replace one crush with another, almost as soon as you realize that the first relationship isn\u2019t going anywhere? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you asked a guy out?\u2014that\u2019s the only one I haven\u2019t done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you have your eye on more than one guy at a time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you believe that you would finally be completely happy if you had a boyfriend? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you change your schedule or plans in order to bump into him? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you tend to have more guy friends than girl friends? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re relaxing with a good book, movie, or song, do you pick those that are filled with ooey, gooey romance? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you journal or pray, are your pages or prayers filled with thoughts and requests about guys? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre you always trying to figure out which guys like you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you be willing to get a total makeover for a guy?\u2014and not the hair, makeup, new clothes kind\u2014but the \u201cI will change who I am, at my core, if that\u2019s what it takes to get you\u201d kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s a pretty good list. And you said \u201cauto-biographical.\u201d You looked through that and you go: \u201cThat was true. Today, it\u2019s not true or less true\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>Less true. Some days are better than others. Something that I pray, pretty much every morning, is this verse that says, \u201cSatisfy me with Your love that I may rejoice and be glad all my days.\u201d So, every day, I\u2019m saying, \u201cGod, if You don\u2019t satisfy me, I <em>know<\/em> that I\u2019m going to run back to my idols.\u201d It\u2019s just like the people of Israel\u2014they were always tearing down their altars and their idols\u2014and then, the next thing you know, they\u2019re building them back up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paula: <\/strong>So yes, I do that. Then the other prayer I pray, daily, is the one from Proverbs\u2014about, \u201cGod, help my eyes to look straight ahead,\u201d because most of my life\u2014and I still can today\u2014I\u2019m looking around for evidence of who\u2019s looking at me: \u201cDo they look like they\u2019re interested?\u201d\u2014things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paula, you\u2019ve been really honest about your relationship with your dad. I\u2019m going to be really honest with you.
