As she describes it, it\u2019s when she and her husband participated in an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was wonderfully done\u2014very interactive.\u00a0 I think the way that I remember viewing it was\u2014it infused hope into me. I was\u2014it just opened up a whole new world for us, and it just began this pattern of us just opening up and being really honest and really vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, July 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. Scott and Sue Allen weren\u2019t content just to have their own relationship strengthened by attending <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. They decided they wanted to reach out and help other people, too. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition, and happy Fourth of July to those who are listening here in the United States of America.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what\u2019s your favorite Fourth of July memory\u2014either from the family you grew up in or from your own\u2014you and Mary Ann and your 35 years of marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s my favorite Fourth of July memory: My dad bought fireworks, and we shot them off in the backyard of our house, which was\u2014it was illegal to shoot off fireworks\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In St. Louis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the city limits in Glendale, Missouri, where we were. We had\u2014and it was not a significant fireworks display. He was not\u2014he was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t set any houses on fire in the neighborhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were breaking the law, but we did not bring down anything. But I just remember\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We won\u2019t get into breaking the law. Let\u2019s don\u2019t talk about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was one firework that spun around, you know? You lit it, and it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014like a pinwheel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just remember\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when my dad lit it and ran away from it\u2014the police sergeant in our community was Sergeant Donovan\u2014and I just remember him saying, \u201cSergeant Donovan, here we come.\u201d I don\u2019t know why that sticks with me, but he lit the fireworks and called on the police. I guess you know\u2014so, there we were breaking the law on the Fourth of July\u2014Fourth of July! It\u2019s our birthday\u2014America\u2019s birthday\u2014and we\u2019re just breaking laws right and left.\u00a0 [Laughter] That\u2019s what I remember.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we were not breaking the law. We were on Table Rock Lake in Southwest Missouri setting off fireworks. There was nothing extraordinary that took place, but we had someone who had gifted us with a massive amount of fireworks display.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I won\u2019t get into all the details of it; but basically, one of their kids had stolen one of our kids\u2019 watches. So, out of shame, guilt, and making restitution\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They gave you fireworks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They gave us the most massive amount of fireworks\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014our family ever enjoyed for the Fourth of July.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you went out in the middle of the lake and shot them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, we shot them off on a point overlooking Table Rock Lake\u2014delightful evening. It didn\u2019t cost me a penny. Of course, you might say it cost the price of that watch, though, too. So, anyway, happy Fourth of July, everyone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our listeners, today, are going to get a chance to meet a couple\u2014and this is the kind of couple that you like. I mean when you run into a couple like this, it makes your day, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does because I would\u00a0 rather see a couple who are in the marketplace\u2014who are in business, work, education\u2014a teacher\u2014who is making a difference where they are planted, and they\u2019ve got the vision of the Great Commission. They want to make an impact\u2014change the world where they live. Scott and Sue Allen have done that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tScott and Sue have been married for 24 years. They have three adult children:\u00a0 Josh, Jay, and Jessica. They live near Lebanon, Ohio, which is between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, they have made a huge impact in the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> with <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> groups, small group Bible studies, with <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. They recognize how vital that is in a community, in a culture; and they say, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do something to help.\u201d And whatever else they are doing in life\u2014raising kids, doing their job, whatever else\u2014they just say, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to pitch in and try to make a difference in the lives of people in our community,\u201d and they roll up their sleeves and get it done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you listen to their story\u2014what I want you to ask is \u201cCould we do this?\u201d\u00a0 Could we roll up our sleeves\u2014maybe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not do as much as this couple has done, but keep in mind that they\u2019ve done it over a number of years. But could you grab one of the tools that FamilyLife has\u2014like <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>, like <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014maybe help with the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, getting couples from your community to attend; or maybe bring\u2014if you live near Chicago, Portland, or Washington, D.C., maybe bring a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Bring a group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a busload of couples to <em>I Still Do<\/em>\u2122 and make an impact in their lives and their children\u2019s lives for generations; but just ask the question, \u201cCould we do that?\u201d You know what? You never know how God might use you to impact a lot of people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I had a chance to sit down with Scott and Sue and ask them some questions when they were at the FamilyLife headquarters a while back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where was I, by the way? I wasn\u2019t able to make this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were out of town, but the staff got together. So, we spent a little while talking to Scott and Sue about their involvement with FamilyLife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and how God\u2019s been using them in Southern, Ohio.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys first got introduced to FamilyLife years ago, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, tell us that story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019d been married 23 years; and probably about two years after we got married, we went to our first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. So, we\u2019re looking at the early \u201890\u2019s at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember how you heard about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Probably through the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Probably through the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Sue, two years into marriage, how were things going?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Things were going, actually, very well at that point.\u00a0 We were newlyweds, and I had a son from a previous marriage. So, at that point, there still weren\u2019t very many issues; but things were going well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so, blending a family, it was coming together okay. You guys were trying to make some progress in this marriage that hadn\u2019t been there\u2014because you\u2019d been married prior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014as well?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We\u2019d both been married before, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, blending a family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and coming out of past marriages\u2014some challenges there. Do you remember what stood out to you about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>? Anything that was a take-home for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, I think it was just good principles that we were hearing then; and again, I think probably set some foundations that\u2014communication and things like that that come up.\u00a0 We had two children fairly quickly after that. So, all of the sudden, we did have a blended family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it. And do you remember anything that stood out? Any take-aways?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, actually, it feels so long ago. I remember going because one of my great attractions to Scott was he was such a man of God. He asked me to go, and I wanted to go. I thought it was a good program; but you know I think we were so focused at that time on just being newly married and I honestly don\u2019t remember a lot from that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. Now, jump ahead twenty years, and you wound up back at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> twenty years later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWas this second time because of issues? What was going on, Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> No, we had gone through Prepare\/Enrich, as ministry leaders at our church.\u00a0 Then, really, the Lord had been working with me and dealing with me to get me involved in marriage ministry. So, I was trying to bring Sue along.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t quite there yet, as far as a ministry focus. We were doing a lot of things inside the church and ministering in different ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I guess early in the year of 2011, we did <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> at our church; and our pastor was driving that initiative. So, from there, we decided to some classes outside of that. Then, that fall was when we went to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. You had been leading a Financial Peace University.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019d been involved in ministry at the church, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely, I was working with the teens a lot, and we were very ministry focused, but very much apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Weren\u2019t doing it together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What about the Prepare\/Enrich? That really was a kind of a turning point for you, wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes, I think what we saw, then\u2014and those who are familiar with Prepare\/Enrich\u2014we did the assessment.\u00a0 We came out of that as a \u201cConventional Couple.\u201d So, good\u2014but I think out of that we saw some things that\u2014you know there were some improvements we could make, and some things probably came to the surface at that point. So, that was a prompting as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you go to Sue and say, \u201cWhat do you think about us maybe doing something in the marriage area together?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes. I had been really\u2014I think months and maybe a year before\u2014where the Lord was leading me\u2014I felt a prompting to do that. So, I had asked her, and again, we were involved in a lot of other stuff, and I would say generally she didn\u2019t feel released with the things that she was doing at the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did it seem attractive to you at all, Sue? I mean did you think, \u201cI might like to do that?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Well, actually, I felt like I was kind of hiding behind my other ministry involvement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen the pastor asked us to take the Prepare\/Enrich assessment, I was actually a little resentful. I didn\u2019t want to do that. I felt like I brought a lot of things into the marriage myself. So, I went a lot to isolation, and I wasn\u2019t really surprised where we landed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, I remember the day I was answering the questions on the computer, I felt bitter\u2014you know\u2014even answering the questions to assessment; but I did it because he\u2019s always stretching me and God is always stretching me. I\u2019m thankful for both; but when he would ask me about the ministry, I just thought, \u201cNo.\u201d I felt like I had a lot inside that he didn\u2019t know about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014not that he didn\u2019t strive, because he always wanted to help me along, but I just felt like there were so many things that he didn\u2019t know about me.\u00a0 [Laughter] And so, I just thought, \u201cNo, we can\u2019t help others.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow can we help others?\u201d\u2014I thought we had a good marriage, but I didn\u2019t think it could get better.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sounds to me like what you are saying was that there was a part of your life and your marriage that was kind of managed and corded off; and you wanted to keep it that way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were a little concerned that doing marriage ministry might crack open the door on some of that stuff, and you just wanted to keep it hermetically sealed, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know it\u2019s interesting. Jeff Kemp who is on our team and who was here yesterday was watching the ESPY Awards recently. He said, \u201cRobin Roberts was on the ESPY Awards, and she was telling these athletes that her mom had told her when she was growing up, \u2018You need to make your mess, your message.\u2019\u201d And I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s a big part of what we try to tell folks\u201d\u2014because let\u2019s be honest, we\u2019ve all got messes, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been thinking I\u2019d like to design a bumper sticker for our church that says, \u201cThe people at our church are messed up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, underneath it says, \u201cAnd I fit right in.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know? Because the reality is that\u2019s who we all\u2014we\u2019ve all got messes; but we\u2019d like to just keep that corded off so that nobody has to know it, deal with it, think less of us because we messed up. But the reality is when our messes become our message, God goes to work, doesn\u2019t He?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You attended <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> just as attendees?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, it was great. I mean our marriage is wonderful, and we had offered during that weekend to take a small group and do some discussion to that\u2014which we did. So, it was\u2014again, probably, one of those good moments for us that it did open up some things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think after we did a small group at our house from <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\u2014right after, that event that weekend, I think in discussions with other small groups\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Sue had said\u2014all of the sudden, she\u2019d figured out that it wasn\u2019t just her issues; it was a gender issue. So, it opened up some of those things in her, and I think that was part of our progress in really making our marriage from\u2014I\u2019d say\u2014\u201cgood\u201d to a \u201cgreat.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sue, when you went through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was that intimidating to you\u2014just to go to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> session?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, it wasn\u2019t because our church is like a second home, and we\u2019re very involved.\u00a0 So, that wasn\u2019t at all intimidating; but <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was wonderfully done\u2014very interactive. I think the way that I remembered viewing it was\u2014it infused hope into me. I listened to those stories, and I thought, \u201cWe could have more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you had a group starting to come over to your house for discussion after that, was that scary for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, again, we\u2019re very used to leading lots of groups and doing that type of thing.\u00a0 So, that wasn\u2019t scary, and sometimes, I get to hide behind being a leader\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014unfortunately\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but this time, it was very revealing to me. It just opened up a whole new world for us.\u00a0 I was shocked when I heard these men sharing how they felt about certain issues. All of the sudden, it just dawned on me that this isn\u2019t like something that just Scott says. They were being very real and very vulnerable, and I would hear the women share. So, it just began this pattern of us just opening up and being really honest and really vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, I want to set a timeframe for all of this because you went to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in the fall of 2011, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We went to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in February of 2011, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, it was the kickoff weekend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was when it first came out. You started a group after that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and then, you kind of kept the group going.\u00a0 You started going through <em>HomeBuilders Couple Series<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right. Between that February\u2014it was Valentine\u2019s weekend\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> \u2014was when we did <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 So, by fall, we had done a couple of <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>. We\u2019d done an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> follow-up in our house. She had a sense\u2014I think sensed some momentum and maybe some leading\u2014certainly leading from the Lord, as I had. So, then, we started embracing\u2014I would say\u2014doing classes and offering classes at church as well as in our home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Started to warm up to this marriage ministry idea?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> I did.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing the way the Lord works because Scott likes to dive into everything\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014and I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m going to stick my toe in.\u201d And if you just look at the timing\u2014I mean He knew what it would take for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA big thing for me is a lot of my life I\u2019ve believed lies, and I think that became my passion\u2014was that I want other women to see that there is more, that you can be open and honest with your husband, and that above all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think what I just found out that it was like, \u201cIt\u2019s not about me getting what I want out of my marriage,\u201d but the whole message of you are serving God in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 That was new for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we have eight <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> studies\u2014eight different titles.\u00a0 Have you done all of them since\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We\u2019ve done them all\u2014more than once.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014since 2011?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve done the\u2014we did <em>The Smart Stepfamily<\/em> twice. We\u2019ve done all the <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> at least once\u2014several\u2014I think we\u2019ve done communications, three different times.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Are you getting it yet?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, is it starting to dawn?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> We\u2019re still practicing\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Fourth times a charm. No, it\u2019s really part of our offerings. We\u2019re committed, really, as a team of our church\u2014and we\u2019ve got a marriage ministry team now that we have an ongoing class that married folk can come to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, eight <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>. You\u2019ve done two <em>Smart Stepfamily<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell me about that experience because you guys are a stepfamily. Tell me about the materials.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Oh my goodness! My son from my first marriage is 27 now\u2014and I remember thinking, \u201cThis would be good for us to have under our belt to help other married couples;\u201d but I didn\u2019t think it was going to impact me. But what I remember from watching\u2014because we watched it first before we presented it to others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, this is the DVD series.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes, the DVD series. I just remember such a healing taking place because Ron gives a message that you are not a second-class citizen; and I had received that message from a pastor. The redeeming message that he gives in the DVD series was phenomenal. Then, just the whole experience, for us, was \u201cOh my goodness! If we had only had this material\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob<\/strong>: Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to go to your church. I mean there has got to be great stuff happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples at your church have got to know, \u201cThis is a church that cares about marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. We\u2019ve got such a supportive staff. Our pastor has been behind us 100% and gives us a lot of free reign, if you will, to do a lot of things. The Valentine\u2019s weekend, it\u2019s a marriage emphasis weekend. He is very supportive; and yes, there are still things happening in our church, and we\u2019re just going to keep plugging along and keep offering the classes and really doing what we feel like God has called us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we want to know if you have relatives. We would like to see\u2014we\u2019d like to see more Scotts and Sues happening all around the country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Well, we will be doing a marriage ministry summit in the coming summer for trying to help other churches just\u2014not really saying that we know the answer, that we have it all together. That\u2019s not at all what we\u2019re saying; but we want to share the story, and hopefully, help other churches\u2014because we\u2019ve had people come from other churches saying that they would hope to have a marriage ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wouldn\u2019t it be cool if every church had a Scott and Sue in the church, huh?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the message that we want to make sure everybody gets today is\u2014no offense\u2014you guys are nothing special, okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I mean that with all respect. You\u2019re a husband and wife who have not done it perfectly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014made some mistakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014learned from your mistakes; but you care about helping other people, and you\u2019ve seen God use you in helping other people. I know it\u2019s got to be gratifying when you hear a story of a couple who say, \u201cYou know you really helped us through this. I\u2019m not sure we\u2019d still be married today if it weren\u2019t for the work you guys have done.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s got to feel good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> It\u2019s very, very rewarding. You know what I think we\u2019ve found is not only helping others; but through this, we\u2019ve, obviously, helped our marriage. We did the Prepare\/Enrich assessment about a year later\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014after we had taken it the first time; and we scored as a \u201cVitalized Couple.\u201d So, going through and building into your own marriage, as well as helping out others, it\u2019s paying off for us too, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Cool. We\u2019ve heard that over and over again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And it\u2019s really the same picture we have in the Gospel of John where the woman at the well meets Jesus; and as a result of meeting Christ and Him changing her life, she went and got the whole city. As a result, they came out to hear the claims of Christ and to meet the person who truly does transform human lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy challenge is the same one I gave you at the beginning of the broadcast: Why not you? Why can\u2019t you be a messenger, a conduit\u2014like the woman at the well\u2014and be used by God to touch your neighborhood; maybe the community around your church; maybe your entire, little town or community?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod can use broken people to get His message to a lot of hurting people today. And we need you to stand firm in this day and age. As she describes it, it\u2019s when she and her husband participated in an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was wonderfully done\u2014very interactive.\u00a0 I think the way that I remember viewing it was\u2014it infused hope into me. I was\u2014it just opened up a whole new world for us, and it just began this pattern of us just opening up and being really honest and really vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, July 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. Scott and Sue Allen weren\u2019t content just to have their own relationship strengthened by attending <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. They decided they wanted to reach out and help other people, too. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition, and happy Fourth of July to those who are listening here in the United States of America.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what\u2019s your favorite Fourth of July memory\u2014either from the family you grew up in or from your own\u2014you and Mary Ann and your 35 years of marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s my favorite Fourth of July memory: My dad bought fireworks, and we shot them off in the backyard of our house, which was\u2014it was illegal to shoot off fireworks\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In St. Louis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the city limits in Glendale, Missouri, where we were. We had\u2014and it was not a significant fireworks display. He was not\u2014he was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t set any houses on fire in the neighborhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were breaking the law, but we did not bring down anything. But I just remember\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We won\u2019t get into breaking the law. Let\u2019s don\u2019t talk about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was one firework that spun around, you know? You lit it, and it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014like a pinwheel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just remember\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when my dad lit it and ran away from it\u2014the police sergeant in our community was Sergeant Donovan\u2014and I just remember him saying, \u201cSergeant Donovan, here we come.\u201d I don\u2019t know why that sticks with me, but he lit the fireworks and called on the police. I guess you know\u2014so, there we were breaking the law on the Fourth of July\u2014Fourth of July! It\u2019s our birthday\u2014America\u2019s birthday\u2014and we\u2019re just breaking laws right and left.\u00a0 [Laughter] That\u2019s what I remember.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we were not breaking the law. We were on Table Rock Lake in Southwest Missouri setting off fireworks. There was nothing extraordinary that took place, but we had someone who had gifted us with a massive amount of fireworks display.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I won\u2019t get into all the details of it; but basically, one of their kids had stolen one of our kids\u2019 watches. So, out of shame, guilt, and making restitution\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They gave you fireworks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They gave us the most massive amount of fireworks\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014our family ever enjoyed for the Fourth of July.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you went out in the middle of the lake and shot them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, we shot them off on a point overlooking Table Rock Lake\u2014delightful evening. It didn\u2019t cost me a penny. Of course, you might say it cost the price of that watch, though, too. So, anyway, happy Fourth of July, everyone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our listeners, today, are going to get a chance to meet a couple\u2014and this is the kind of couple that you like. I mean when you run into a couple like this, it makes your day, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does because I would\u00a0 rather see a couple who are in the marketplace\u2014who are in business, work, education\u2014a teacher\u2014who is making a difference where they are planted, and they\u2019ve got the vision of the Great Commission. They want to make an impact\u2014change the world where they live. Scott and Sue Allen have done that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tScott and Sue have been married for 24 years. They have three adult children:\u00a0 Josh, Jay, and Jessica. They live near Lebanon, Ohio, which is between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, they have made a huge impact in the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> with <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> groups, small group Bible studies, with <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>. You never know how God might use you to impact a lot of people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> I had a chance to sit down with Scott and Sue and ask them some questions when they were at the FamilyLife headquarters a while back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where was I, by the way? I wasn\u2019t able to make this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were out of town, but the staff got together. So, we spent a little while talking to Scott and Sue about their involvement with FamilyLife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and how God\u2019s been using them in Southern, Ohio.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys first got introduced to FamilyLife years ago, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, tell us that story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019d been married 23 years; and probably about two years after we got married, we went to our first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. So, we\u2019re looking at the early \u201890\u2019s at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember how you heard about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Probably through the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Probably through the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Sue, two years into marriage, how were things going?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Things were going, actually, very well at that point.\u00a0 We were newlyweds, and I had a son from a previous marriage. So, at that point, there still weren\u2019t very many issues; but things were going well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so, blending a family, it was coming together okay. You guys were trying to make some progress in this marriage that hadn\u2019t been there\u2014because you\u2019d been married prior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014as well?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We\u2019d both been married before, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, blending a family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and coming out of past marriages\u2014some challenges there. Do you remember what stood out to you about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>? Anything that was a take-home for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, I think it was just good principles that we were hearing then; and again, I think probably set some foundations that\u2014communication and things like that that come up.\u00a0 We had two children fairly quickly after that. So, all of the sudden, we did have a blended family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it. And do you remember anything that stood out? Any take-aways?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, actually, it feels so long ago. I remember going because one of my great attractions to Scott was he was such a man of God. He asked me to go, and I wanted to go. I thought it was a good program; but you know I think we were so focused at that time on just being newly married and I honestly don\u2019t remember a lot from that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. Now, jump ahead twenty years, and you wound up back at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> twenty years later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWas this second time because of issues? What was going on, Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> No, we had gone through Prepare\/Enrich, as ministry leaders at our church.\u00a0 Then, really, the Lord had been working with me and dealing with me to get me involved in marriage ministry. So, I was trying to bring Sue along.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t quite there yet, as far as a ministry focus. We were doing a lot of things inside the church and ministering in different ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I guess early in the year of 2011, we did <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> at our church; and our pastor was driving that initiative. So, from there, we decided to some classes outside of that. Then, that fall was when we went to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. You had been leading a Financial Peace University.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019d been involved in ministry at the church, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely, I was working with the teens a lot, and we were very ministry focused, but very much apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Weren\u2019t doing it together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What about the Prepare\/Enrich? That really was a kind of a turning point for you, wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes, I think what we saw, then\u2014and those who are familiar with Prepare\/Enrich\u2014we did the assessment.\u00a0 We came out of that as a \u201cConventional Couple.\u201d So, good\u2014but I think out of that we saw some things that\u2014you know there were some improvements we could make, and some things probably came to the surface at that point. So, that was a prompting as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you go to Sue and say, \u201cWhat do you think about us maybe doing something in the marriage area together?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes. I had been really\u2014I think months and maybe a year before\u2014where the Lord was leading me\u2014I felt a prompting to do that. So, I had asked her, and again, we were involved in a lot of other stuff, and I would say generally she didn\u2019t feel released with the things that she was doing at the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did it seem attractive to you at all, Sue? I mean did you think, \u201cI might like to do that?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Well, actually, I felt like I was kind of hiding behind my other ministry involvement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen the pastor asked us to take the Prepare\/Enrich assessment, I was actually a little resentful. I didn\u2019t want to do that. I felt like I brought a lot of things into the marriage myself. So, I went a lot to isolation, and I wasn\u2019t really surprised where we landed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, I remember the day I was answering the questions on the computer, I felt bitter\u2014you know\u2014even answering the questions to assessment; but I did it because he\u2019s always stretching me and God is always stretching me. I\u2019m thankful for both; but when he would ask me about the ministry, I just thought, \u201cNo.\u201d I felt like I had a lot inside that he didn\u2019t know about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014not that he didn\u2019t strive, because he always wanted to help me along, but I just felt like there were so many things that he didn\u2019t know about me.\u00a0 [Laughter] And so, I just thought, \u201cNo, we can\u2019t help others.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow can we help others?\u201d\u2014I thought we had a good marriage, but I didn\u2019t think it could get better.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Sounds to me like what you are saying was that there was a part of your life and your marriage that was kind of managed and corded off; and you wanted to keep it that way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were a little concerned that doing marriage ministry might crack open the door on some of that stuff, and you just wanted to keep it hermetically sealed, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know it\u2019s interesting. Jeff Kemp who is on our team and who was here yesterday was watching the ESPY Awards recently. He said, \u201cRobin Roberts was on the ESPY Awards, and she was telling these athletes that her mom had told her when she was growing up, \u2018You need to make your mess, your message.\u2019\u201d And I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s a big part of what we try to tell folks\u201d\u2014because let\u2019s be honest, we\u2019ve all got messes, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been thinking I\u2019d like to design a bumper sticker for our church that says, \u201cThe people at our church are messed up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, underneath it says, \u201cAnd I fit right in.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know? Because the reality is that\u2019s who we all\u2014we\u2019ve all got messes; but we\u2019d like to just keep that corded off so that nobody has to know it, deal with it, think less of us because we messed up. But the reality is when our messes become our message, God goes to work, doesn\u2019t He?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You attended <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> just as attendees?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Well, it was great. I mean our marriage is wonderful, and we had offered during that weekend to take a small group and do some discussion to that\u2014which we did. So, it was\u2014again, probably, one of those good moments for us that it did open up some things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think after we did a small group at our house from <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\u2014right after, that event that weekend, I think in discussions with other small groups\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Sue had said\u2014all of the sudden, she\u2019d figured out that it wasn\u2019t just her issues; it was a gender issue. So, it opened up some of those things in her, and I think that was part of our progress in really making our marriage from\u2014I\u2019d say\u2014\u201cgood\u201d to a \u201cgreat.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sue, when you went through <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was that intimidating to you\u2014just to go to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> session?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, it wasn\u2019t because our church is like a second home, and we\u2019re very involved.\u00a0 So, that wasn\u2019t at all intimidating; but <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> was wonderfully done\u2014very interactive. I think the way that I remembered viewing it was\u2014it infused hope into me. I listened to those stories, and I thought, \u201cWe could have more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you had a group starting to come over to your house for discussion after that, was that scary for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> No, again, we\u2019re very used to leading lots of groups and doing that type of thing.\u00a0 So, that wasn\u2019t scary, and sometimes, I get to hide behind being a leader\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014unfortunately\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but this time, it was very revealing to me. It just opened up a whole new world for us.\u00a0 I was shocked when I heard these men sharing how they felt about certain issues. All of the sudden, it just dawned on me that this isn\u2019t like something that just Scott says. They were being very real and very vulnerable, and I would hear the women share. So, it just began this pattern of us just opening up and being really honest and really vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, I want to set a timeframe for all of this because you went to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in the fall of 2011, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We went to <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in February of 2011, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, it was the kickoff weekend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was when it first came out. You started a group after that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and then, you kind of kept the group going.\u00a0 You started going through <em>HomeBuilders Couple Series<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right. Between that February\u2014it was Valentine\u2019s weekend\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> \u2014was when we did <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 So, by fall, we had done a couple of <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>. We\u2019d done an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> follow-up in our house. She had a sense\u2014I think sensed some momentum and maybe some leading\u2014certainly leading from the Lord, as I had. So, then, we started embracing\u2014I would say\u2014doing classes and offering classes at church as well as in our home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Started to warm up to this marriage ministry idea?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> I did.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing the way the Lord works because Scott likes to dive into everything\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> \u2014and I\u2019m like, \u201cI\u2019m going to stick my toe in.\u201d And if you just look at the timing\u2014I mean He knew what it would take for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA big thing for me is a lot of my life I\u2019ve believed lies, and I think that became my passion\u2014was that I want other women to see that there is more, that you can be open and honest with your husband, and that above all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think what I just found out that it was like, \u201cIt\u2019s not about me getting what I want out of my marriage,\u201d but the whole message of you are serving God in your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 That was new for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we have eight <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> studies\u2014eight different titles.\u00a0 Have you done all of them since\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> We\u2019ve done them all\u2014more than once.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014since 2011?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve done the\u2014we did <em>The Smart Stepfamily<\/em> twice. We\u2019ve done all the <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> at least once\u2014several\u2014I think we\u2019ve done communications, three different times.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Are you getting it yet?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, is it starting to dawn?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> We\u2019re still practicing\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Fourth times a charm. No, it\u2019s really part of our offerings. We\u2019re committed, really, as a team of our church\u2014and we\u2019ve got a marriage ministry team now that we have an ongoing class that married folk can come to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, eight <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>. You\u2019ve done two <em>Smart Stepfamily<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell me about that experience because you guys are a stepfamily. Tell me about the materials.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Oh my goodness! My son from my first marriage is 27 now\u2014and I remember thinking, \u201cThis would be good for us to have under our belt to help other married couples;\u201d but I didn\u2019t think it was going to impact me. But what I remember from watching\u2014because we watched it first before we presented it to others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, this is the DVD series.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Yes, the DVD series. I just remember such a healing taking place because Ron gives a message that you are not a second-class citizen; and I had received that message from a pastor. The redeeming message that he gives in the DVD series was phenomenal. Then, just the whole experience, for us, was \u201cOh my goodness! If we had only had this material\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob<\/strong>: Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to go to your church. I mean there has got to be great stuff happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples at your church have got to know, \u201cThis is a church that cares about marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. We\u2019ve got such a supportive staff. Our pastor has been behind us 100% and gives us a lot of free reign, if you will, to do a lot of things. The Valentine\u2019s weekend, it\u2019s a marriage emphasis weekend. He is very supportive; and yes, there are still things happening in our church, and we\u2019re just going to keep plugging along and keep offering the classes and really doing what we feel like God has called us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we want to know if you have relatives. We would like to see\u2014we\u2019d like to see more Scotts and Sues happening all around the country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Well, we will be doing a marriage ministry summit in the coming summer for trying to help other churches just\u2014not really saying that we know the answer, that we have it all together. That\u2019s not at all what we\u2019re saying; but we want to share the story, and hopefully, help other churches\u2014because we\u2019ve had people come from other churches saying that they would hope to have a marriage ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wouldn\u2019t it be cool if every church had a Scott and Sue in the church, huh?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the message that we want to make sure everybody gets today is\u2014no offense\u2014you guys are nothing special, okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I mean that with all respect. You\u2019re a husband and wife who have not done it perfectly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014made some mistakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sue:<\/strong> Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014learned from your mistakes; but you care about helping other people, and you\u2019ve seen God use you in helping other people. I know it\u2019s got to be gratifying when you hear a story of a couple who say, \u201cYou know you really helped us through this. I\u2019m not sure we\u2019d still be married today if it weren\u2019t for the work you guys have done.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s got to feel good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong> It\u2019s very, very rewarding. You know what I think we\u2019ve found is not only helping others; but through this, we\u2019ve, obviously, helped our marriage. We did the Prepare\/Enrich assessment about a year later\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014after we had taken it the first time; and we scored as a \u201cVitalized Couple.\u201d So, going through and building into your own marriage, as well as helping out others, it\u2019s paying off for us too, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Cool. Would you guys thank Scott and Sue Allen?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, again, listened back to a conversation that we had recently with Scott and Sue Allen; and you know the last point that Scott made there about how when you reach out to help others\u2014has a way of coming back and paying dividends in your own family, in your own marriage, your own relationship. We\u2019ve heard that over and over again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And it\u2019s really the same picture we have in the Gospel of John where the woman at the well meets Jesus; and as a result of meeting Christ and Him changing her life, she went and got the whole city. She went and got the entire town to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014find out who touched this woman\u2019s life who had had half a dozen husbands. As a result, they came out to hear the claims of Christ and to meet the person who truly does transform human lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy challenge is the same one I gave you at the beginning of the broadcast: Why not you? Why can\u2019t you be a messenger, a conduit\u2014like the woman at the well\u2014and be used by God to touch your neighborhood; maybe the community around your church; maybe your entire, little town or community?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod can use broken people to get His message to a lot of hurting people today. And we need you to stand firm in this day and age. I think it\u2019s the key, Bob, to seeing families restored according to God\u2019s Word and God\u2019s blueprints.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you said, \u201cNot everybody is going to do as much as Scott and Sue have done,\u201d but it may be as simple as calling another couple you know and saying, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you join us at the <em>I Still <\/em>Do\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cone-day marriage celebration in Chicago or Portland or Washington, D.C.?\u201d Or \u201cWhy don\u2019t I talk to the church and see if they can host the simulcast for <em>I Still Do<\/em> in October?\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cWhy don\u2019t we go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> together?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr it may be that you get resources like <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\u2014get the small group study and take three or four couples through the small group study with you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Piece of cake to be able to lead it. It\u2019s all done for you. The quality of the videos will spark all kinds of conversations. I promise you people today want to get together and talk about meaningful things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or get a group of guys and go through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series for men. It\u2019s a ten-week series that one guy can take three or four guys through; or you can get fathers and sons and go through the material together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to decide what your capacity is, what your passion is, and where you want to direct it.
