It\u2019s a vertical issue. It\u2019s not <em>first <\/em>about people who don\u2019t want\u2014who aren\u2019t smart enough to balance their checkbooks. It\u2019s about: \u201cI\u2019m spending another thousand dollars, even though I can\u2019t even pay the minimum budget on my credit card, because I believe a lie. Thanks for joining us. You\u2019ve heard me tell this story before; but I was on a flight, not long ago, and I was working on my laptop while I was flying. I was trying to get some work done\u2014had my headphones on. I was working away. I noticed the guy next to me. He pulled out of his bag his iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I didn\u2019t have an iPad at the time, and I was really happy with the computer I had. I mean, it was new computer; and it was really doing well. I was happy until he pulled out his iPad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I just looked over; and I thought, \u201cI really want that iPad.\u201d\u00a0 It looked nicer than my computer. It looked more fun than my computer. I found myself starting to crave and become dissatisfied with what, five minutes ago, I\u2019d been happy with. I was now dissatisfied with it because the guy next to me had something that was nicer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a little bit tied into what we\u2019re talking about this week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s: \u201cWhat do we love?\u00a0 What do we really want? Who do we want to worship or <em>what<\/em> do we want to worship?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we have a gentleman here\u2014good friend\u2014Paul Tripp who has written a book on\u2014well, it\u2019s called <em>Sex and Money<\/em>. You don\u2019t get any more basic than that. Paul\u2014welcome back to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thanks; great to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I bet you have an iPad; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>See there!\u00a0 Okay, now, I\u2019m\u2014of course, I do too now. So, I guess we\u2019re all okay. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I\u2019m looking at the new ones. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, the nicer ones; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been discussing the subject of sex and how we can get hooked on that and addicted to that. Somehow, it feels like: \u201cYes, I can understand that about sex. That\u2019s got some kind of pleasure factor\u2014addiction factor,\u201d but somehow, I don\u2019t think people have the same sense about money\u2014that we can be addicted to money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we can; can\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And isn\u2019t it interesting the way the Bible talks about love of money?\u00a0 There it is. Just that phrase changes the ballgame because I don\u2019t think of myself\u2014I would imagine most people listening don\u2019t think of themselves a people who would love money; but the Bible says that love of money\u2014this is a big statement\u2014is the root of all kinds of evil. So, God is saying something to us about the nature of our struggle with money. It\u2019s not about amounts of money. It\u2019s about the relationship of my heart to money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not about the bills or the coins, obviously. It\u2019s not that anybody loves a $20 bill more than they love a $10 bill. You don\u2019t love the paper. You love what that money can get you; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. That money is such an obvious doorway to what I tell myself will give me life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. Like the new iPad or whatever it is\u2014we are constantly\u2014and I\u2019ve found this in my own life\u2014constantly being seduced by this idea that I will finally be happy when I have this thing in my possession\u2014only to find out that you can have it for a while\u2014and it loses its charm really quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And, if you look at that larger passage in First Timothy 6, you begin to get an understanding of what this thing \u201clove of money\u201d is. I don\u2019t think that phrase means much to most people because they don\u2019t think of themselves. They think of love as being an emotional thing. They think: \u201cEmotional attachment to money?\u00a0 I don\u2019t have an emotional attachment to money.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what\u2019s that about?\u00a0 The larger passage would tell me this\u2014that love of money is, first, a contentment problem. I have a perverse ability to be discontent. That\u2019s a scary, dangerous thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially in this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, it\u2019s dangled in front of your nose left and right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible teaches that God brings blessing upon people. So, money can be a blessing to people; but it also seems that the Bible teaches that money can be a curse as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And you have both of those argued very strongly in Scripture. That\u2019s why I think it\u2019s important to understand what the Bible\u2019s actually talking about when it talks about love of money because, if you are experiencing personal discontent, what is the one thing that you want?\u00a0 \u201cI want to be content. I don\u2019t like discontent. I don\u2019t like feeling want.\u201d\u00a0 And so, what does money do?\u00a0 Money whispers in my ear: \u201cBut you could have\u2026. How would you feel if you had\u2026\u201d\u2014fill in the blank. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, money is also an identity problem; because, if I forget that I was made to find my fulfillment only in one place\u2014vertically, in relationship with God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s only that relationship that can satisfy my heart. What will I do?\u00a0 I\u2019ll search for satisfaction, horizontally. That\u2019s an identity issue. I\u2019m an identity amnesiac, at that point. I\u2019ve forgotten who I was made to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird, money is\u2014the love of money is a fallen-world problem. You\u2019ve mentioned that with materialism. I live in a world that is seducing me with very attractive lies all the time\u2014\u201cIf only you had\u2026. Just imagine if you could own\u2026. Just imagine what it would be like to experience\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho of us doesn\u2019t experience that every day?\u00a0 That\u2019s what will cause a man to go to a restaurant that serves him a 48-ounce piece of meat. [Laughter] No man ever needs a 48-ounce piece of meat in one sitting, but just that sheer mind-boggling pleasure of that drives men to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, like sex, money is a worship problem because here\u2019s with discontent\u2014mistaken identity\u2014succumbing to the lies of a fallen world is where I\u2019ll end up. I end up with a heart that is ruled by things that replace where God should be in my heart\u2014what God alone can do for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love Jeremiah 10 that talks about the idol like a scarecrow in a melon patch. You have to nail it to a platform so it doesn\u2019t fall over\u2014that\u2019s <em>mockery<\/em> in Scripture. Then, second half of that passage is just a rift on the glory of God. You are meant to read that passage with that contrast. Do you really think that this wooden thing\u2014that you\u2019ve made with your own hands\u2014 can do what this glorious God can do?\u00a0 Well, the obvious answer is, \u201cNo\u201d but we ask that of the scarecrow every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to read a passage of Scripture; but I, first of all, want to declare that, as Americans, most of us are rich. By the world\u2019s standards, we\u2019re not a third-world country. So, even someone who is lower middle class enjoys a whole lot more than \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t90 percent of the people on the planet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul wrote this to Timothy at the end of his first epistle. He said, \u201cAs for the rich in this present age\u201d\u2014that\u2019s us\u2014\u201ccharge them not to be haughty nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but on God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>What you\u2019ve exhorted us to do, Paul\u2014is you\u2019ve exhorted us to have a throne check and go: \u201cWhat really rules in our hearts?\u00a0 Is it self?\u00a0 Is it pleasure?\u00a0 Is it our own desires and wants that rule us?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we get up every morning, we\u2019re thinking about how to satisfy every desire we have, as human beings. But the Scriptures call us to rightly evaluate ourselves in light of who God is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about it as King Money versus King Jesus in the book; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. I was a gardener for a man\u2014a very wealthy man, who\u2014one of the ways he got his identity was collecting rare sports cars. Man, I think a 1965 powder blue Jaguar XKE\u2014it\u2019s just a gorgeous thing, but it can\u2019t rule your heart. And he pulled up one day with a brand-new sports car\u2014hopped out and called me over. He said, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cBenny, I think it\u2019s not working.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?!\u00a0 It\u2019s a brand-new car.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI think what you are trying to do will never work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said, \u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re saying to me.\u201d\u00a0 And I said to him, \u201cHow many automobiles will you have to buy before you conclude that no automobile has the capacity, whatsoever, to satisfy your heart\u2014none?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHere\u2019s, as stark as I can say it: \u2018Earth will never be your Savior. It never will. Buy it all\u2014it\u2019ll never satisfy your heart.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ecclesiastes, Chapter 2, points this out where Solomon had all the money he needed. In fact, he said, \u201cThere was nothing my eyes saw that I didn\u2019t acquire,\u201d\u2014\u201cAnything I wanted, I bought it\u201d; and he still had money left over. He gets to the end of explaining all the stuff he\u2019d bought. He says: \u201cIt\u2019s empty. It\u2019s vanity.\u201d\u00a0 We should learn from his example when we think that 40-inch flat screen is going to make us happier than the 32-inch flat screen. We\u2019re just fooling ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why I say, in the subtitle of the book, \u201c<em>Pleasures That Leave You Empty<\/em>,\u201d because they can\u2019t give you that ultimate peace, rest, security, joy of heart. They just can\u2019t do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are meant to point you to where that can be found. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, when you tell yourself, \u201cI\u2019ve got this tool in my pocket that can give me life,\u201d you\u2019re cooked.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and you use an illustration in your book that points this out\u2014something you used to get frustrated with. You give your son some kind of gift or maybe something wrapped in a box; and he ended up doing what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Playing with the box. [Laughter]\u00a0 And I think we do that all the time. God has given us the most awesome, heart-satisfying gift that you could ever have. It\u2019s relationship with Him, through the grace of His Son. We set aside the gift, and we play with the box. What\u2019s the box?\u00a0 The box is all that created world stuff that is meant to point us to Him. We\u2019re satisfied with the box. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr it\u2019s like the family that is on their way down to Disney World\u2014never gone to Disney World. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019ve saved up two years to go to Disney World. They get to the first sign that says, \u201cDisney World 120 miles.\u201d\u00a0 They get out of the car, and they have their vacation there. You would say, \u201cThis family is crazy!\u201d\u00a0 We do that every day because that sign is not the thing. That sign points you to the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, in the Gospel of John, the typical word that John uses for the miracles of Christ is \u201csign\u201d because they are meant to point you to the glory of the One who can bring ultimate healing to your heart. You stop at the sign\u2014you\u2019ll never be fulfilled. What you will become is fat, addicted, and in debt because you will go back again, and again, and again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat this means is that debt\u2014the shocking, paralyzing debt\u2014of Western culture is a spiritual issue. It\u2019s a vertical issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not <em>first<\/em> about people who aren\u2019t smart enough to balance their checkbooks. It\u2019s about: \u201cI\u2019m spending another thousand dollars, even though I can\u2019t even pay the minimum budget on my credit card, because I believe a lie. I believe this next thing will give me what it can\u2019t give me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the person who is hearing us talk about the spiritual battle with money\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter whether these are people who are living in abundance or living in want. The spiritual battle rages with the rich man as much as it does with the guy who\u2019s just scraping by. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Let me give you a personal example. I was a young pastor, just a couple years ago. [Laughter]\u00a0 I was\u2014we were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In a relative sense, it was just a couple years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014a very small church. We were getting paid a very meager salary\u2014$7,800 a year. And we got $100 in the mail. I turned immediately into an idolater. I had spent that money a thousand ways\u2014not on anything worthwhile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just free money. It\u2019s morally-unbounded free money!\u00a0 We didn\u2019t expect this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And Luella, my wife, said to me, \u201cPaul, we didn\u2019t have this $100 yesterday. We didn\u2019t know it was going to come. We\u2019re going to eat tonight. Who can we give this money to?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI have married someone from Mars.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I thought you were going to say you had married someone from heaven. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t how you saw it; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I thought: \u201cYou have got to be kidding! You\u2019ve got to be crazy!\u201d\u00a0 There it is. I mean, we were poor people; but right away, money meant one thing to me: \u201cI\u2019ve got $100 to buy me pleasure for whatever period of time that $100 will still be around.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the secret of contentment, whether you are rich or you\u2019re poor, is what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, \u201cI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What that whole worldview is about is that: \u201cSatisfaction actually exists for me, and it\u2019s a person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHis name is Jesus, and I am on the road to being satisfied. I don\u2019t have to be desperate. I don\u2019t have to be fearful because I serve a satisfied Redeemer who will not relent until every microbe of sin is delivered from every cell of every heart of every one of His children. He will have my heart.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat gives me hope that, in the midst of this struggle, I can run to Him and say: \u201cI want my heart to be Yours, but I know You want my heart to be Yours more than I will ever want my heart to be Yours. That gives me hope today. Please help me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Paul, don\u2019t you think that, as we read the Bible and as we think about where we\u2019re going and eternity\u2014that that helps us calibrate these blessings, and the affluence that can come our way, and the money that can be enjoyed by us if we have eternity in view?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s one of the functions of the last book of the Bible. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s talked about this way enough. We are invited to hear the words of the people who are on the other side as they look back. What do they say?\u2014\u201cWe had the best house.\u201d\u00a0 No. \u201cWe ate the best food.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe drove the coolest chariot\u2014ever!\u201d\u2014none of that. They say: \u201cYou did it. You did it. You did it. Every promise You made, You fulfilled. You are worthy of glory, praise, and honor. We love You. We worship You. You did it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to just add Paul\u2019s words\u2014the Apostle Paul, sorry, Paul\u2014you have written a book, but not quite the best-seller\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that the Apostle Paul did. The rest of that passage, when he was instructing Timothy about what to say to the rich of this world, concludes by saying: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cInstruct them that they are to do good and to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share\u201d\u2014and here is eternity showing up here\u2014\u201cthus, storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>As you read that, there is something that causes you to grin about the few times in your life when you really have done this\u2014when you have been rich in good works and you knew you were pleasing your Heavenly Father. That\u2019s what He\u2019s calling us to do\u2014not love money\u2014but love the Lord our God with all of our hearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>There is also a saying that true riches are not about the size of my bank account. Jesus said, \u201cYou\u2019re laying hold now of real riches.\u201d\u00a0 This is what real riches are about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright. So, let me give you this practical dilemma. We just went to visit my daughter and son-in-law. They live in a house that\u2019s got well water that feeds the house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first morning I was there, I took a shower. I thought: \u201cBoy, the water pressure in this house is not very good. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the shower head that\u2019s blocking it somehow. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the water pressure; but if I was in a hotel and this was the water pressure, I\u2019d be talking to them at the front desk about something needs to happen with the water pressure\u2014it needs to be better.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I asked my daughter\u2014I said: \u201cAre you aware of\u2014are you concerned about the water pressure?\u00a0 Do you know what the problem is with the water pressure?\u201d\u00a0 And she said: \u201cYes, we\u2019ve kind of gotten used to it. We\u2019ve just kind of learned to adjust, and it\u2019s not that big a deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, my daughter lived for two years in Southeast Asia. I\u2019m guessing that, over there, the water pressure was worse\u2014intermittent. There may have been days when there was no water pressure. So, to have any water pressure\u2014to have regular water pressure and hot water\u2014she may be looking at that and going, \u201cI live in luxury.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at it and going, \u201cWe need to call a plumber and get him out here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here is the dilemma that I face with that. Is there something wrong with calling the plumber and having him come and try to figure out if you can increase the water pressure in your house so you can have a little more water in your shower?\u00a0 Or should you give that money to the poor people in Cambodia?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, sure, there is nothing wrong with maintaining your plumbing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would endorse that strongly. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a bad thing to visit your moments of discontent and say: \u201cWhat is my discontent about?\u00a0 What is my discontent say about me?\u00a0 What does my discontent say about what I have defined as the good life\u2014the life that I want to experience\u2014I want to enjoy?\u201d\u00a0 I find that very humbling. Or the question: \u201cHow much envy is in my life, and why am I envious?\u00a0 What is that saying about the way I view myself, and view God, and view the meaning and purpose of life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would say, in that moment: \u201cSure, maintain the plumbing. There is nothing wrong with that. That\u2019s not a sinful thing to do. But how low is my discontent threshold, and could it be that I\u2019ve bought into \u2018There are certain non-negotiables for me if I\u2019m going to be happy\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s that movement toward something ruling me that shouldn\u2019t rule me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s back to what\u2014really, what Jesus said when He summarized the Old Testament and the Law when asked, \u201cWhat is the greatest commandment?\u201d\u00a0 And He said, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the assignment for us\u2014whether it is sex, money, issues of creature comforts and contentment\u2014as you write about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Paul, I appreciate you going through the heavy lifting of writing a book like this because this is the kind of book that causes some serious introspection\u2014just as you were talking to Bob about the plumbing issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt causes one to pull back, take a look at your life, and go, \u201cWhere am I struggling with envy \/ contentment?\u201d\u00a0 I really appreciate you and your ministry of the Scriptures\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to the body of Christ. I was happy until he pulled out his iPad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I just looked over; and I thought, \u201cI really want that iPad.\u201d\u00a0 It looked nicer than my computer. It looked more fun than my computer. I found myself starting to crave and become dissatisfied with what, five minutes ago, I\u2019d been happy with. I was now dissatisfied with it because the guy next to me had something that was nicer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a little bit tied into what we\u2019re talking about this week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s: \u201cWhat do we love?\u00a0 What do we really want? Who do we want to worship or <em>what<\/em> do we want to worship?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we have a gentleman here\u2014good friend\u2014Paul Tripp who has written a book on\u2014well, it\u2019s called <em>Sex and Money<\/em>. You don\u2019t get any more basic than that. Paul\u2014welcome back to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thanks; great to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I bet you have an iPad; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>See there!\u00a0 Okay, now, I\u2019m\u2014of course, I do too now. So, I guess we\u2019re all okay. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I\u2019m looking at the new ones. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, the nicer ones; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve been discussing the subject of sex and how we can get hooked on that and addicted to that. Somehow, it feels like: \u201cYes, I can understand that about sex. That\u2019s got some kind of pleasure factor\u2014addiction factor,\u201d but somehow, I don\u2019t think people have the same sense about money\u2014that we can be addicted to money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we can; can\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And isn\u2019t it interesting the way the Bible talks about love of money?\u00a0 There it is. Just that phrase changes the ballgame because I don\u2019t think of myself\u2014I would imagine most people listening don\u2019t think of themselves a people who would love money; but the Bible says that love of money\u2014this is a big statement\u2014is the root of all kinds of evil. So, God is saying something to us about the nature of our struggle with money. It\u2019s not about amounts of money. It\u2019s about the relationship of my heart to money. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not about the bills or the coins, obviously. It\u2019s not that anybody loves a $20 bill more than they love a $10 bill. You don\u2019t love the paper. You love what that money can get you; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. That money is such an obvious doorway to what I tell myself will give me life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. Like the new iPad or whatever it is\u2014we are constantly\u2014and I\u2019ve found this in my own life\u2014constantly being seduced by this idea that I will finally be happy when I have this thing in my possession\u2014only to find out that you can have it for a while\u2014and it loses its charm really quickly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And, if you look at that larger passage in First Timothy 6, you begin to get an understanding of what this thing \u201clove of money\u201d is. I don\u2019t think that phrase means much to most people because they don\u2019t think of themselves. They think of love as being an emotional thing. They think: \u201cEmotional attachment to money?\u00a0 I don\u2019t have an emotional attachment to money.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what\u2019s that about?\u00a0 The larger passage would tell me this\u2014that love of money is, first, a contentment problem. I have a perverse ability to be discontent. That\u2019s a scary, dangerous thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially in this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, it\u2019s dangled in front of your nose left and right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible teaches that God brings blessing upon people. So, money can be a blessing to people; but it also seems that the Bible teaches that money can be a curse as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And you have both of those argued very strongly in Scripture. That\u2019s why I think it\u2019s important to understand what the Bible\u2019s actually talking about when it talks about love of money because, if you are experiencing personal discontent, what is the one thing that you want?\u00a0 \u201cI want to be content. I don\u2019t like discontent. I don\u2019t like feeling want.\u201d\u00a0 And so, what does money do?\u00a0 Money whispers in my ear: \u201cBut you could have\u2026. How would you feel if you had\u2026\u201d\u2014fill in the blank. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, money is also an identity problem; because, if I forget that I was made to find my fulfillment only in one place\u2014vertically, in relationship with God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s only that relationship that can satisfy my heart. What will I do?\u00a0 I\u2019ll search for satisfaction, horizontally. That\u2019s an identity issue. I\u2019m an identity amnesiac, at that point. I\u2019ve forgotten who I was made to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird, money is\u2014the love of money is a fallen-world problem. You\u2019ve mentioned that with materialism. I live in a world that is seducing me with very attractive lies all the time\u2014\u201cIf only you had\u2026. Just imagine if you could own\u2026. Just imagine what it would be like to experience\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho of us doesn\u2019t experience that every day?\u00a0 That\u2019s what will cause a man to go to a restaurant that serves him a 48-ounce piece of meat. [Laughter] No man ever needs a 48-ounce piece of meat in one sitting, but just that sheer mind-boggling pleasure of that drives men to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, like sex, money is a worship problem because here\u2019s with discontent\u2014mistaken identity\u2014succumbing to the lies of a fallen world is where I\u2019ll end up. I end up with a heart that is ruled by things that replace where God should be in my heart\u2014what God alone can do for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love Jeremiah 10 that talks about the idol like a scarecrow in a melon patch. You have to nail it to a platform so it doesn\u2019t fall over\u2014that\u2019s <em>mockery<\/em> in Scripture. Then, second half of that passage is just a rift on the glory of God. You are meant to read that passage with that contrast. Do you really think that this wooden thing\u2014that you\u2019ve made with your own hands\u2014 can do what this glorious God can do?\u00a0 Well, the obvious answer is, \u201cNo\u201d but we ask that of the scarecrow every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to read a passage of Scripture; but I, first of all, want to declare that, as Americans, most of us are rich. By the world\u2019s standards, we\u2019re not a third-world country. So, even someone who is lower middle class enjoys a whole lot more than \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t90 percent of the people on the planet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul wrote this to Timothy at the end of his first epistle. He said, \u201cAs for the rich in this present age\u201d\u2014that\u2019s us\u2014\u201ccharge them not to be haughty nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but on God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>What you\u2019ve exhorted us to do, Paul\u2014is you\u2019ve exhorted us to have a throne check and go: \u201cWhat really rules in our hearts?\u00a0 Is it self?\u00a0 Is it pleasure?\u00a0 Is it our own desires and wants that rule us?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we get up every morning, we\u2019re thinking about how to satisfy every desire we have, as human beings. But the Scriptures call us to rightly evaluate ourselves in light of who God is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about it as King Money versus King Jesus in the book; don\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. I was a gardener for a man\u2014a very wealthy man, who\u2014one of the ways he got his identity was collecting rare sports cars. Man, I think a 1965 powder blue Jaguar XKE\u2014it\u2019s just a gorgeous thing, but it can\u2019t rule your heart. And he pulled up one day with a brand-new sports car\u2014hopped out and called me over. He said, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cBenny, I think it\u2019s not working.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?!\u00a0 It\u2019s a brand-new car.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI think what you are trying to do will never work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said, \u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re saying to me.\u201d\u00a0 And I said to him, \u201cHow many automobiles will you have to buy before you conclude that no automobile has the capacity, whatsoever, to satisfy your heart\u2014none?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHere\u2019s, as stark as I can say it: \u2018Earth will never be your Savior. It never will. Buy it all\u2014it\u2019ll never satisfy your heart.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ecclesiastes, Chapter 2, points this out where Solomon had all the money he needed. In fact, he said, \u201cThere was nothing my eyes saw that I didn\u2019t acquire,\u201d\u2014\u201cAnything I wanted, I bought it\u201d; and he still had money left over. He gets to the end of explaining all the stuff he\u2019d bought. He says: \u201cIt\u2019s empty. It\u2019s vanity.\u201d\u00a0 We should learn from his example when we think that 40-inch flat screen is going to make us happier than the 32-inch flat screen. We\u2019re just fooling ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why I say, in the subtitle of the book, \u201c<em>Pleasures That Leave You Empty<\/em>,\u201d because they can\u2019t give you that ultimate peace, rest, security, joy of heart. They just can\u2019t do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are meant to point you to where that can be found. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, when you tell yourself, \u201cI\u2019ve got this tool in my pocket that can give me life,\u201d you\u2019re cooked.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and you use an illustration in your book that points this out\u2014something you used to get frustrated with. You give your son some kind of gift or maybe something wrapped in a box; and he ended up doing what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Playing with the box. [Laughter]\u00a0 And I think we do that all the time. God has given us the most awesome, heart-satisfying gift that you could ever have. It\u2019s relationship with Him, through the grace of His Son. We set aside the gift, and we play with the box. What\u2019s the box?\u00a0 The box is all that created world stuff that is meant to point us to Him. We\u2019re satisfied with the box. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr it\u2019s like the family that is on their way down to Disney World\u2014never gone to Disney World. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019ve saved up two years to go to Disney World. They get to the first sign that says, \u201cDisney World 120 miles.\u201d\u00a0 They get out of the car, and they have their vacation there. You would say, \u201cThis family is crazy!\u201d\u00a0 We do that every day because that sign is not the thing. That sign points you to the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, in the Gospel of John, the typical word that John uses for the miracles of Christ is \u201csign\u201d because they are meant to point you to the glory of the One who can bring ultimate healing to your heart. You stop at the sign\u2014you\u2019ll never be fulfilled. What you will become is fat, addicted, and in debt because you will go back again, and again, and again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat this means is that debt\u2014the shocking, paralyzing debt\u2014of Western culture is a spiritual issue. It\u2019s a vertical issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not <em>first<\/em> about people who aren\u2019t smart enough to balance their checkbooks. It\u2019s about: \u201cI\u2019m spending another thousand dollars, even though I can\u2019t even pay the minimum budget on my credit card, because I believe a lie. I believe this next thing will give me what it can\u2019t give me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the person who is hearing us talk about the spiritual battle with money\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter whether these are people who are living in abundance or living in want. The spiritual battle rages with the rich man as much as it does with the guy who\u2019s just scraping by. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Let me give you a personal example. I was a young pastor, just a couple years ago. [Laughter]\u00a0 I was\u2014we were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In a relative sense, it was just a couple years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014a very small church. We were getting paid a very meager salary\u2014$7,800 a year. And we got $100 in the mail. I turned immediately into an idolater. I had spent that money a thousand ways\u2014not on anything worthwhile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just free money. It\u2019s morally-unbounded free money!\u00a0 We didn\u2019t expect this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And Luella, my wife, said to me, \u201cPaul, we didn\u2019t have this $100 yesterday. We didn\u2019t know it was going to come. We\u2019re going to eat tonight. Who can we give this money to?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI have married someone from Mars.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I thought you were going to say you had married someone from heaven. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t how you saw it; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I thought: \u201cYou have got to be kidding! You\u2019ve got to be crazy!\u201d\u00a0 There it is. I mean, we were poor people; but right away, money meant one thing to me: \u201cI\u2019ve got $100 to buy me pleasure for whatever period of time that $100 will still be around.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the secret of contentment, whether you are rich or you\u2019re poor, is what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, \u201cI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What that whole worldview is about is that: \u201cSatisfaction actually exists for me, and it\u2019s a person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHis name is Jesus, and I am on the road to being satisfied. I don\u2019t have to be desperate. I don\u2019t have to be fearful because I serve a satisfied Redeemer who will not relent until every microbe of sin is delivered from every cell of every heart of every one of His children. He will have my heart.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat gives me hope that, in the midst of this struggle, I can run to Him and say: \u201cI want my heart to be Yours, but I know You want my heart to be Yours more than I will ever want my heart to be Yours. That gives me hope today. Please help me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Paul, don\u2019t you think that, as we read the Bible and as we think about where we\u2019re going and eternity\u2014that that helps us calibrate these blessings, and the affluence that can come our way, and the money that can be enjoyed by us if we have eternity in view?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s one of the functions of the last book of the Bible. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s talked about this way enough. We are invited to hear the words of the people who are on the other side as they look back. What do they say?\u2014\u201cWe had the best house.\u201d\u00a0 No. \u201cWe ate the best food.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe drove the coolest chariot\u2014ever!\u201d\u2014none of that. They say: \u201cYou did it. You did it. You did it. Every promise You made, You fulfilled. You are worthy of glory, praise, and honor. We love You. We worship You. You did it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to just add Paul\u2019s words\u2014the Apostle Paul, sorry, Paul\u2014you have written a book, but not quite the best-seller\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that the Apostle Paul did. The rest of that passage, when he was instructing Timothy about what to say to the rich of this world, concludes by saying: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cInstruct them that they are to do good and to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share\u201d\u2014and here is eternity showing up here\u2014\u201cthus, storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>As you read that, there is something that causes you to grin about the few times in your life when you really have done this\u2014when you have been rich in good works and you knew you were pleasing your Heavenly Father. That\u2019s what He\u2019s calling us to do\u2014not love money\u2014but love the Lord our God with all of our hearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>There is also a saying that true riches are not about the size of my bank account. Jesus said, \u201cYou\u2019re laying hold now of real riches.\u201d\u00a0 This is what real riches are about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright. So, let me give you this practical dilemma. We just went to visit my daughter and son-in-law. They live in a house that\u2019s got well water that feeds the house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first morning I was there, I took a shower. I thought: \u201cBoy, the water pressure in this house is not very good. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the shower head that\u2019s blocking it somehow. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the water pressure; but if I was in a hotel and this was the water pressure, I\u2019d be talking to them at the front desk about something needs to happen with the water pressure\u2014it needs to be better.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I asked my daughter\u2014I said: \u201cAre you aware of\u2014are you concerned about the water pressure?\u00a0 Do you know what the problem is with the water pressure?\u201d\u00a0 And she said: \u201cYes, we\u2019ve kind of gotten used to it. We\u2019ve just kind of learned to adjust, and it\u2019s not that big a deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, my daughter lived for two years in Southeast Asia. I\u2019m guessing that, over there, the water pressure was worse\u2014intermittent. There may have been days when there was no water pressure. So, to have any water pressure\u2014to have regular water pressure and hot water\u2014she may be looking at that and going, \u201cI live in luxury.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m looking at it and going, \u201cWe need to call a plumber and get him out here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here is the dilemma that I face with that. Is there something wrong with calling the plumber and having him come and try to figure out if you can increase the water pressure in your house so you can have a little more water in your shower?\u00a0 Or should you give that money to the poor people in Cambodia?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, sure, there is nothing wrong with maintaining your plumbing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would endorse that strongly. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a bad thing to visit your moments of discontent and say: \u201cWhat is my discontent about?\u00a0 What is my discontent say about me?\u00a0 What does my discontent say about what I have defined as the good life\u2014the life that I want to experience\u2014I want to enjoy?\u201d\u00a0 I find that very humbling. Or the question: \u201cHow much envy is in my life, and why am I envious?\u00a0 What is that saying about the way I view myself, and view God, and view the meaning and purpose of life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would say, in that moment: \u201cSure, maintain the plumbing. There is nothing wrong with that. That\u2019s not a sinful thing to do. But how low is my discontent threshold, and could it be that I\u2019ve bought into \u2018There are certain non-negotiables for me if I\u2019m going to be happy\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s that movement toward something ruling me that shouldn\u2019t rule me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s back to what\u2014really, what Jesus said when He summarized the Old Testament and the Law when asked, \u201cWhat is the greatest commandment?\u201d\u00a0 And He said, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the assignment for us\u2014whether it is sex, money, issues of creature comforts and contentment\u2014as you write about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Paul, I appreciate you going through the heavy lifting of writing a book like this because this is the kind of book that causes some serious introspection\u2014just as you were talking to Bob about the plumbing issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt causes one to pull back, take a look at your life, and go, \u201cWhere am I struggling with envy \/ contentment?\u201d\u00a0 I really appreciate you and your ministry of the Scriptures\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to the body of Christ.
