He said that he starting to be recognized in airports because of his appearance in <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Did you know that? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have you really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Seriously?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Like, in what way?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>People just come up to me and say, \u201cI saw you\u2014<em>Art of Marriage<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said some guy just came up\u2014what did he say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>He just said, \u201cI\u2019ve been looking at that mustache way too long,\u201d and just walked away. [Laughter]\u00a0 He <em>didn\u2019t <\/em>say, \u201cThank you. It was helpful.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was no judgment of whether it was a statement of charity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>All about the mustache! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But he walked about ten feet to tell me that. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the mustache belongs to Paul Tripp. He\u2019s a pastor \/ a speaker\u2014lives in Philly with his wife Luella and their four grown children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s written a book called <em>Sex and Money<\/em>. There is something I want to get right after\u2014at the start. You said in your book that, as you wrote it, it stripped your own heart raw of really your own idol worship and your own struggles with sex and money. Would you just comment on that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. I think one of the things that became real clear to me is, although I\u2019m staying inside of the big sort of marriage faithfulness boundaries, I would allow myself to watch something on television that just is not healthy for me to watch. I would say, \u201cWell, it\u2019s got a great plot.\u201d\u00a0 Or if I\u2019m at a restaurant and the food isn\u2019t made the way I want, I can feel myself getting riled up inside because something is in the way of my pleasure. I want to say to the waiter, \u201cCome on!\u201d\u2014or I\u2019ll see something that attracts my eyes\u2014that I can\u2019t afford, and it upsets me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think: \u201cI don\u2019t ask for much. I\u2019ve been serving Jesus all these years.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s all\u2014that heart struggle. It\u2019s: \u201cHow do I define life?\u201d\u00a0 Do I define life by great meals, by the amount of money that I have in my wallet?\u00a0 I\u2019m not free of that struggle, and I don\u2019t actually think I\u2019ll be free of it until I\u2019m on the other side because the issue is\u2014is it\u2019s only ever the evil inside of me that hooks me to the evil outside of me. That\u2019s the way it works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re not medieval monastics. I mean, what was the theory of the monastery? \u201cIt\u2019s an evil world out there. Build a big wall, and go inside. We\u2019ll create a righteous culture.\u201d Well, we know the monastery recreated every ill of the surrounding culture because the big mistake of monasteries was this\u2014they let people in them. [Laughter]\u00a0 What do people bring?\u00a0 They brought the sinfulness of their hearts and recreated all those problems. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what was devastatingly humble to me is this: \u201cI\u2019m my greatest problem\u2014it\u2019s me. That\u2019s where I have to start.\u201d Yes, the culture is a mess; but \u201cto the pure\u2026\u201d\u2014can you finish it?\u2014\u201call things are pure.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I\u2019m still trappable because I\u2019m not yet that pure man. That\u2019s devastating to face. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I want to ask you about that because I\u2019m imagining that most of our listeners would, at least, give intellectual assent to the biblical morality as it relates to sexuality. They would say: \u201cOkay, it\u2019s wrong to have sex outside of marriage. It\u2019s wrong to look at pornography on the internet.\u201d\u00a0 They could give you the list of rights and wrongs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd most of them feel like, \u201cAs long as I\u2019m staying away from those things\u201d\u2014a little like you just said\u2014\u201cAs long as I\u2019m staying away from those things, I\u2019m living\u2014maybe not a perfectly pure life\u2014but certainly better than most of the people in the world today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s wrong with that way of thinking?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Let me give you an illustration on a different topic. If you are standing next to a man, who has got his fist clinched and he is saying to the person across from him, \u201cIf I weren\u2019t a believer, I would deck you right now!\u201d\u00a0 Is that a good thing?\u00a0 Sure, it\u2019s a good thing. I\u2019m glad he\u2019s not hitting that person, but is that enough of a thing?\u00a0 It\u2019s not for me. I want for that man to be in that situation and not experience that rage anymore. That\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about where we get after the <em>cause<\/em> of the struggle that we\u2019re all having. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would say to that person: \u201cHow much of your anger in the last two months had anything whatsoever to do with the Kingdom of God?\u00a0 How much of your disappointment had anything whatsoever to do with the Kingdom of God?\u00a0 How much of the wants that you have from other people had anything to do with the Kingdom of God?\u201d\u00a0 You begin to ask those questions\u2014it\u2019s pretty humbling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when a person is going: \u201cOkay, but I\u2019m resisting these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m doing it because I do want to please the Lord,\u201d is that the right approach they are taking, in terms of trying to guard their purity in the area of sexuality?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I absolutely think that you should take concrete steps to guard your purity; but remember what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount: \u201cIf a man looks at a woman to lust after her, he\u2019s already\u201d\u2014what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Committed adultery. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes, in his heart. So, what Jesus does is give the thoughts and motives of the heart the moral value of behavior. What Jesus is actually saying is \u201cIf you put the fences around that behavior, you\u2019ll never win the battle.\u201d\u00a0 The fences have to be at the heart. So, I have to ask the question: \u201cWhat really rules my heart?\u00a0 What really makes me happy?\u00a0 What do I <em>really<\/em> want out of life?\u201d\u00a0 The sort of spiritual way of saying it is \u201cWhat throne do I worship at\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ceveryday?\u201d\u00a0 What is my functional God replacement?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s where you really begin to get at the issues. I think what this does is it drives you to the cross because you know that you need rescue. You need to be rescued. You need the powerful, transforming grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. You need something more than a set of rules. I\u2019m all for setting those boundaries\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014but I think we have a generation of young people, who lived under the fear of those boundaries, who are walking away from Christian homes, <em>fully<\/em> insane. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, when you say, \u201cfully insane,\u201d you are meaning they are acting out the lusts of their hearts?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. That may be that I don\u2019t dress to cover my body\u2014I dress to show my body. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt may mean that I\u2019m a freshman in high school or in college, as a young man. I\u2019ve learned to see women as objects for my pleasure, and I treat them that way. It may mean that I\u2019ve got grant money for college, and I burned through a bunch of it paying for my pleasures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m already moving into that insanity. That insanity already has got me. I\u2019m now out from under those protective rules, and the reason they\u2019re not helping me is because there wasn\u2019t heart change in the midst of that. The rules temporarily held me, and they were enforced. That\u2019s not a bad thing, but it\u2019s not enough of a thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say in the book that you had an unbiblical view of your own sexuality for years. What\u2019s the difference between how you used to think about your sexuality and how you think about it today?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, I think it\u2019s exactly that. I thought, \u201cIf I stayed inside of\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The boundaries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cx, y, and z, I was okay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And one of the things that just hit me, again, as I wrote this book, is: \u201cI still have a susceptible heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI would like to think I don\u2019t, but I still do.\u201d\u00a0 God has really used that in my life. Why would you ever do that?\u2014because you tell yourself, \u201cIt\u2019ll make you happy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You, of course, teach in your book that God made these pleasures for us to enjoy. I\u2019ve got in my Bible a quote, \u201cThe human heart is an idol factory.\u201d I\u2019ve got it right above the Great Commandment\u2014that we\u2019re to love God with all of our hearts. It seems to me that life is one long process of tearing down the idols and trying to learn how and what it means to love God whole-heartedly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to sex\u2014when it comes to this delightful thing God made\u2014you break it down and talk about a big picture of sex and a little picture of sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019d be good if you explained that to our listeners because I think that kind of breaks it down, in a practical way, where they can begin to evaluate: \u201cHow am I handling this sacred area of marital love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What little-picture sex does\u2014it puts me in the center of my sexual world. And with me in the center of my sexual world, it means it\u2019s all about me and my pleasure\u2014what I want, what I desire, what works for me, who it works with. It is sex shrunk to the size of my desire. What the Bible does is expands this area to a huge agenda that\u2019s way, way bigger than me. I expand that in chapters in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the first one: \u201cIf sex is about worship, it can\u2019t be just about me. If I\u2019m created to worship God, then, sex is, by its very nature, an act of worship.\u201d\u00a0 Think about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn any moment of sexual activity\u2014I\u2019m worshipping myself, I\u2019m worshipping sex, I\u2019m worshipping the body of the other person, or I\u2019m worshipping God. So, immediately, it\u2019s not just about me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, if sex is about relationship, it\u2019s not just about me. Sex is in the context of a God-ordained, long-term loving relationship. It\u2019s meant to be in the context of that\u2014where I <em>care<\/em> about the heart of the other person. I <em>care<\/em> about the identity of the person\u2014what this means for them: \u201cWhat will be the legacy of what I\u2019ve done with that person to that person?\u201d\u00a0 So, if it\u2019s about relationship, it can\u2019t be just about me. It\u2019s bigger than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, if sex is about obedience, it can\u2019t be just about me. Well, we know it\u2019s about obedience because there are direct biblical commands of the Creator for how I\u2019m to comport myself in sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about somebody that you met with in counseling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said this husband was insistent that he and his wife have relations daily. Yet, you said their relationship was, essentially, isolation other than this daily sexual experience that they were having. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, how horrible is this?\u00a0 This woman\u2014that he is called by God to be willing to lay down his life for, that he should deeply, fully love, care about every emotion in her heart \/ every thought in her brain\u2014has been reduced to an implement for his sexual pleasure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, watch. If that\u2019s all she\u2019s been\u2014if she\u2019s just been a tool\u2014how easy is it then to walk down the hallway and replace her with his computer?\u2014because it\u2019s never been about her anyway?\u00a0 No wonder so many men are so susceptible to that move because they\u2019ve owned sex for them. It\u2019s not been an act of relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been a violation of relationship. You talk to the women\u2014they know it. No wonder they have trouble giving themselves. No wonder they don\u2019t mind the infrequency because they feel demeaned and used. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe husband says to them: \u201cWell, you\u2019re my wife. This is what you\u2019re supposed to do\u201d; but there is something askew\u2014that they know is wrong here\u2014because his pleasure rules rather than the pleasure of God that says, \u201cWhat should rule in that moment is a love relationship between the two of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there is always a risk involved in the sexual dimension of a marriage relationship. It\u2019s never A+B+C=D. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s about two broken human beings who are attempting to love each other in their circumstances of life\u2014which change as we have kids, as we empty the house out with kids, as we change physically and move into different seasons of our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s anything but an equation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. And I think that struggle together is just a beautiful thing\u2014where you grow in knowledge and understanding of one another\u2014in love for one another. You grow in patience for one another\u2014you mature. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s an ugly thing is when: \u201cI don\u2019t care about your struggle in that moment, and I don\u2019t actually care about you. I care about reaching sexual satisfaction. You\u2019re the tool to do that for me right now.\u201d\u00a0 That is <em>incredibly<\/em> demeaning\u2014and we must say, \u201cRebellious to the plan of God,\u201d because, again, what\u2019s happened to sex is it\u2019s shrunk down to the claustrophobic confines of the particular pleasure of one human being.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve talked for years about the idea that sex is an area where men\u2014it\u2019s a bigger issue for guys than it is for women. Do you think that is true?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It depends on what you mean by a \u201cbigger issue.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould I argue that there have been cultural periods where it seemed to be more of a struggle for men than for women?\u00a0 If that\u2019s true, I think that\u2019s rapidly changing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife is in the art business. It is really shocking to us that some of the most pornographic art being produced today is being produced by female artists because that\u2019s part of their view of \u201cThis is me being free.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s little-picture sex. So, being free is: \u201cI have the right, even though I\u2019m a woman, to paint the most <em>graphic<\/em> pictures of sexuality because that\u2019s my right.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd to the degree that women have been demeaned\u2014because men have used them as just a tool for their pleasure\u2014to that degree\u2014women grow up as moms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey just have all kinds of messed up stuff going on in their brain about sexuality that they pass down to their daughters\u2014who make those daughters very vulnerable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just thinking that the mom, who might be listening, who is hearing us talk about the idol of sexuality, and how we can distort it, and how important it can become\u2014and she\u2019s thinking: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I think I could go months\u2014maybe years\u2014without really caring whether I had sex again or not. It\u2019s just not anything that is on my list of things that I really look forward to. It\u2019s way down the list.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But that\u2019s why you have to look at the heart because the gradations of this\u2014the way this plays out\u2014with me owning, \u201cThis as mine\u2014not belonging to God,\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re just endless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about that mom, who is listening to us right now. She\u2019s thinking about, \u201cOne of the assignments my husband and I have is to really train our children up with a proper view of biblical sexuality.\u201d\u00a0 Where would you encourage her to begin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, it\u2019s the heart. How would you equip her to give her sons \/ give her daughters, really, God\u2019s view of sex\u2014a healthy view of sex?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>See, I think that you don\u2019t start with sex. You start with identity: \u201cWho am I?\u201d\u00a0 And the two things I would immediately just camp on for my children is: \u201cI\u2019m a creature.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s means I\u2019ll never be in the center of my world because God is in the center\u2014that all of my life is vertical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a second thing\u2014on the horizontal level\u2014is that means I\u2019m always worshipping because I\u2019ve been made to be a worshipper. So, I\u2019m offering my heart to something. There are a lot of illustrations you can give like: \u201cSusie, you know that when Sally is mean to you at school, it destroys your week. Could it be that Sally is too important to you\u2014that you\u2019re getting too much of your identity from Sally?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you begin to help children to understand: \u201cThis is who I am. This is how I operate.\u201d\u00a0 Then, you begin to talk about the specifics of sex\u2014and how your identity, as a creature, is played out there\u2014and how your identity, as a worshipper, is played out in sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, in this day and age, where young people are being tempted\u2014not only to question the illicit use of their sexuality and their identity\u2014but they are tempted to switch identities\u2014what would you say to the mom who is fearful about a son or a daughter who may be experimenting right now with same-sex attraction?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would say a couple things\u2014that there is no sin that your child will ever be exposed to or tempted to participate in that is outside of the powerful, forgiving, transforming grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>We can\u2019t value-rate sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd these are the sins for which Christ died. So, you need to have that kind of confidence. The Bible does offer truth that does actually set us free, empowered by the Spirit of God. Be a champion of truth. Truth is a powerful, powerful thing. So, be bold\u2014be consistent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third thing I would say is confess your struggles to your kids. Stand with them and talk of the hope and help you find, as a broken person, in the presence and promises of the Lord Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and identify with them. Let them know, as you deal with your own selfishness and brokenness, that there is nothing they can do or nothing that they\u2019ve done that is going to keep them from the love of God\u2014if they know Christ as Savior and Lord\u2014and He\u2019s willing to accept them back. He\u2019s willing to welcome them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I said to many young people that: \u201cThe most painful moment of Christ on the cross was not physical\u2014it was relational.\u201d\u00a0 It was that moment that the Father turns His back on the Son\u2014and Jesus Christ: \u201c<em>Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani<\/em>?\u2014My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?\u201d\u00a0 Jesus took every piece of your rejection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, no matter what\u2014you will never again see the back of God\u2019s head. I don\u2019t have to live in shame. I don\u2019t have to live in hiding. I don\u2019t have to be afraid of being known because there is nothing that could ever be known about me that isn\u2019t covered by the blood of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that was the love that turned my life around in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> year of my young life\u2014the love of God demonstrated in the book of Romans\u2014where I began to realize that my back was turned to Him. His wasn\u2019t turned toward me, and He was calling me back\u2014wanting me to experience His grace, and forgiveness, and love, and fellowship with Him, and become the person He made me to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat decision of coming back was, I think, the most important decision of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it was a decision about where your worship was going to go. That\u2019s essentially what we\u2019ve been talking about\u2014what you talk about in your book. These are worship choices that we make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not one and done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not that I did that at 20, and \u201cWell, that sealed it.\u201d\u00a0 Now, 40 some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It sealed some things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201440-some years later, it is still an issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still in the battle. We\u2019re all still in a battle because we still wrestle against\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014our own flesh and blood. [Laughter]\u00a0 He <em>didn\u2019t <\/em>say, \u201cThank you. It was helpful.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was no judgment of whether it was a statement of charity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>All about the mustache! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But he walked about ten feet to tell me that. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the mustache belongs to Paul Tripp. He\u2019s a pastor \/ a speaker\u2014lives in Philly with his wife Luella and their four grown children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s written a book called <em>Sex and Money<\/em>. There is something I want to get right after\u2014at the start. You said in your book that, as you wrote it, it stripped your own heart raw of really your own idol worship and your own struggles with sex and money. Would you just comment on that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. I think one of the things that became real clear to me is, although I\u2019m staying inside of the big sort of marriage faithfulness boundaries, I would allow myself to watch something on television that just is not healthy for me to watch. I would say, \u201cWell, it\u2019s got a great plot.\u201d\u00a0 Or if I\u2019m at a restaurant and the food isn\u2019t made the way I want, I can feel myself getting riled up inside because something is in the way of my pleasure. I want to say to the waiter, \u201cCome on!\u201d\u2014or I\u2019ll see something that attracts my eyes\u2014that I can\u2019t afford, and it upsets me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think: \u201cI don\u2019t ask for much. I\u2019ve been serving Jesus all these years.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s all\u2014that heart struggle. It\u2019s: \u201cHow do I define life?\u201d\u00a0 Do I define life by great meals, by the amount of money that I have in my wallet?\u00a0 I\u2019m not free of that struggle, and I don\u2019t actually think I\u2019ll be free of it until I\u2019m on the other side because the issue is\u2014is it\u2019s only ever the evil inside of me that hooks me to the evil outside of me. That\u2019s the way it works. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re not medieval monastics. I mean, what was the theory of the monastery? \u201cIt\u2019s an evil world out there. Build a big wall, and go inside. We\u2019ll create a righteous culture.\u201d Well, we know the monastery recreated every ill of the surrounding culture because the big mistake of monasteries was this\u2014they let people in them. [Laughter]\u00a0 What do people bring?\u00a0 They brought the sinfulness of their hearts and recreated all those problems. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what was devastatingly humble to me is this: \u201cI\u2019m my greatest problem\u2014it\u2019s me. That\u2019s where I have to start.\u201d Yes, the culture is a mess; but \u201cto the pure\u2026\u201d\u2014can you finish it?\u2014\u201call things are pure.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I\u2019m still trappable because I\u2019m not yet that pure man. That\u2019s devastating to face. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I want to ask you about that because I\u2019m imagining that most of our listeners would, at least, give intellectual assent to the biblical morality as it relates to sexuality. They would say: \u201cOkay, it\u2019s wrong to have sex outside of marriage. It\u2019s wrong to look at pornography on the internet.\u201d\u00a0 They could give you the list of rights and wrongs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd most of them feel like, \u201cAs long as I\u2019m staying away from those things\u201d\u2014a little like you just said\u2014\u201cAs long as I\u2019m staying away from those things, I\u2019m living\u2014maybe not a perfectly pure life\u2014but certainly better than most of the people in the world today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s wrong with that way of thinking?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Let me give you an illustration on a different topic. If you are standing next to a man, who has got his fist clinched and he is saying to the person across from him, \u201cIf I weren\u2019t a believer, I would deck you right now!\u201d\u00a0 Is that a good thing?\u00a0 Sure, it\u2019s a good thing. I\u2019m glad he\u2019s not hitting that person, but is that enough of a thing?\u00a0 It\u2019s not for me. I want for that man to be in that situation and not experience that rage anymore. That\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about where we get after the <em>cause<\/em> of the struggle that we\u2019re all having. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would say to that person: \u201cHow much of your anger in the last two months had anything whatsoever to do with the Kingdom of God?\u00a0 How much of your disappointment had anything whatsoever to do with the Kingdom of God?\u00a0 How much of the wants that you have from other people had anything to do with the Kingdom of God?\u201d\u00a0 You begin to ask those questions\u2014it\u2019s pretty humbling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, when a person is going: \u201cOkay, but I\u2019m resisting these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m doing it because I do want to please the Lord,\u201d is that the right approach they are taking, in terms of trying to guard their purity in the area of sexuality?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I absolutely think that you should take concrete steps to guard your purity; but remember what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount: \u201cIf a man looks at a woman to lust after her, he\u2019s already\u201d\u2014what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Committed adultery. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes, in his heart. So, what Jesus does is give the thoughts and motives of the heart the moral value of behavior. What Jesus is actually saying is \u201cIf you put the fences around that behavior, you\u2019ll never win the battle.\u201d\u00a0 The fences have to be at the heart. So, I have to ask the question: \u201cWhat really rules my heart?\u00a0 What really makes me happy?\u00a0 What do I <em>really<\/em> want out of life?\u201d\u00a0 The sort of spiritual way of saying it is \u201cWhat throne do I worship at\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ceveryday?\u201d\u00a0 What is my functional God replacement?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s where you really begin to get at the issues. I think what this does is it drives you to the cross because you know that you need rescue. You need to be rescued. You need the powerful, transforming grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. You need something more than a set of rules. I\u2019m all for setting those boundaries\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014but I think we have a generation of young people, who lived under the fear of those boundaries, who are walking away from Christian homes, <em>fully<\/em> insane. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, when you say, \u201cfully insane,\u201d you are meaning they are acting out the lusts of their hearts?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. That may be that I don\u2019t dress to cover my body\u2014I dress to show my body. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt may mean that I\u2019m a freshman in high school or in college, as a young man. I\u2019ve learned to see women as objects for my pleasure, and I treat them that way. It may mean that I\u2019ve got grant money for college, and I burned through a bunch of it paying for my pleasures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m already moving into that insanity. That insanity already has got me. I\u2019m now out from under those protective rules, and the reason they\u2019re not helping me is because there wasn\u2019t heart change in the midst of that. The rules temporarily held me, and they were enforced. That\u2019s not a bad thing, but it\u2019s not enough of a thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say in the book that you had an unbiblical view of your own sexuality for years. What\u2019s the difference between how you used to think about your sexuality and how you think about it today?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, I think it\u2019s exactly that. I thought, \u201cIf I stayed inside of\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The boundaries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cx, y, and z, I was okay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And one of the things that just hit me, again, as I wrote this book, is: \u201cI still have a susceptible heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI would like to think I don\u2019t, but I still do.\u201d\u00a0 God has really used that in my life. It\u2019s been incredibly humbling to face. I still have materialistic temptation where I would spend money that I don\u2019t need to spend on things I don\u2019t actually need. Why would you ever do that?\u2014because you tell yourself, \u201cIt\u2019ll make you happy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You, of course, teach in your book that God made these pleasures for us to enjoy. I\u2019ve got in my Bible a quote, \u201cThe human heart is an idol factory.\u201d I\u2019ve got it right above the Great Commandment\u2014that we\u2019re to love God with all of our hearts. It seems to me that life is one long process of tearing down the idols and trying to learn how and what it means to love God whole-heartedly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to sex\u2014when it comes to this delightful thing God made\u2014you break it down and talk about a big picture of sex and a little picture of sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019d be good if you explained that to our listeners because I think that kind of breaks it down, in a practical way, where they can begin to evaluate: \u201cHow am I handling this sacred area of marital love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What little-picture sex does\u2014it puts me in the center of my sexual world. And with me in the center of my sexual world, it means it\u2019s all about me and my pleasure\u2014what I want, what I desire, what works for me, who it works with. It is sex shrunk to the size of my desire. What the Bible does is expands this area to a huge agenda that\u2019s way, way bigger than me. I expand that in chapters in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the first one: \u201cIf sex is about worship, it can\u2019t be just about me. If I\u2019m created to worship God, then, sex is, by its very nature, an act of worship.\u201d\u00a0 Think about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn any moment of sexual activity\u2014I\u2019m worshipping myself, I\u2019m worshipping sex, I\u2019m worshipping the body of the other person, or I\u2019m worshipping God. So, immediately, it\u2019s not just about me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, if sex is about relationship, it\u2019s not just about me. Sex is in the context of a God-ordained, long-term loving relationship. It\u2019s meant to be in the context of that\u2014where I <em>care<\/em> about the heart of the other person. I <em>care<\/em> about the identity of the person\u2014what this means for them: \u201cWhat will be the legacy of what I\u2019ve done with that person to that person?\u201d\u00a0 So, if it\u2019s about relationship, it can\u2019t be just about me. It\u2019s bigger than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, if sex is about obedience, it can\u2019t be just about me. Well, we know it\u2019s about obedience because there are direct biblical commands of the Creator for how I\u2019m to comport myself in sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about somebody that you met with in counseling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said this husband was insistent that he and his wife have relations daily. Yet, you said their relationship was, essentially, isolation other than this daily sexual experience that they were having. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, how horrible is this?\u00a0 This woman\u2014that he is called by God to be willing to lay down his life for, that he should deeply, fully love, care about every emotion in her heart \/ every thought in her brain\u2014has been reduced to an implement for his sexual pleasure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, watch. If that\u2019s all she\u2019s been\u2014if she\u2019s just been a tool\u2014how easy is it then to walk down the hallway and replace her with his computer?\u2014because it\u2019s never been about her anyway?\u00a0 No wonder so many men are so susceptible to that move because they\u2019ve owned sex for them. It\u2019s not been an act of relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been a violation of relationship. You talk to the women\u2014they know it. No wonder they have trouble giving themselves. No wonder they don\u2019t mind the infrequency because they feel demeaned and used. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe husband says to them: \u201cWell, you\u2019re my wife. This is what you\u2019re supposed to do\u201d; but there is something askew\u2014that they know is wrong here\u2014because his pleasure rules rather than the pleasure of God that says, \u201cWhat should rule in that moment is a love relationship between the two of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there is always a risk involved in the sexual dimension of a marriage relationship. It\u2019s never A+B+C=D. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s about two broken human beings who are attempting to love each other in their circumstances of life\u2014which change as we have kids, as we empty the house out with kids, as we change physically and move into different seasons of our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s anything but an equation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. And I think that struggle together is just a beautiful thing\u2014where you grow in knowledge and understanding of one another\u2014in love for one another. You grow in patience for one another\u2014you mature. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s an ugly thing is when: \u201cI don\u2019t care about your struggle in that moment, and I don\u2019t actually care about you. I care about reaching sexual satisfaction. You\u2019re the tool to do that for me right now.\u201d\u00a0 That is <em>incredibly<\/em> demeaning\u2014and we must say, \u201cRebellious to the plan of God,\u201d because, again, what\u2019s happened to sex is it\u2019s shrunk down to the claustrophobic confines of the particular pleasure of one human being.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019ve talked for years about the idea that sex is an area where men\u2014it\u2019s a bigger issue for guys than it is for women. Do you think that is true?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It depends on what you mean by a \u201cbigger issue.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould I argue that there have been cultural periods where it seemed to be more of a struggle for men than for women?\u00a0 If that\u2019s true, I think that\u2019s rapidly changing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife is in the art business. It is really shocking to us that some of the most pornographic art being produced today is being produced by female artists because that\u2019s part of their view of \u201cThis is me being free.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s little-picture sex. So, being free is: \u201cI have the right, even though I\u2019m a woman, to paint the most <em>graphic<\/em> pictures of sexuality because that\u2019s my right.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd to the degree that women have been demeaned\u2014because men have used them as just a tool for their pleasure\u2014to that degree\u2014women grow up as moms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey just have all kinds of messed up stuff going on in their brain about sexuality that they pass down to their daughters\u2014who make those daughters very vulnerable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just thinking that the mom, who might be listening, who is hearing us talk about the idol of sexuality, and how we can distort it, and how important it can become\u2014and she\u2019s thinking: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I think I could go months\u2014maybe years\u2014without really caring whether I had sex again or not. It\u2019s just not anything that is on my list of things that I really look forward to. It\u2019s way down the list.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But that\u2019s why you have to look at the heart because the gradations of this\u2014the way this plays out\u2014with me owning, \u201cThis as mine\u2014not belonging to God,\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re just endless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about that mom, who is listening to us right now. She\u2019s thinking about, \u201cOne of the assignments my husband and I have is to really train our children up with a proper view of biblical sexuality.\u201d\u00a0 Where would you encourage her to begin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, it\u2019s the heart. How would you equip her to give her sons \/ give her daughters, really, God\u2019s view of sex\u2014a healthy view of sex?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>See, I think that you don\u2019t start with sex. You start with identity: \u201cWho am I?\u201d\u00a0 And the two things I would immediately just camp on for my children is: \u201cI\u2019m a creature.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s means I\u2019ll never be in the center of my world because God is in the center\u2014that all of my life is vertical. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a second thing\u2014on the horizontal level\u2014is that means I\u2019m always worshipping because I\u2019ve been made to be a worshipper. So, I\u2019m offering my heart to something. There are a lot of illustrations you can give like: \u201cSusie, you know that when Sally is mean to you at school, it destroys your week. Could it be that Sally is too important to you\u2014that you\u2019re getting too much of your identity from Sally?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you begin to help children to understand: \u201cThis is who I am. This is how I operate.\u201d\u00a0 Then, you begin to talk about the specifics of sex\u2014and how your identity, as a creature, is played out there\u2014and how your identity, as a worshipper, is played out in sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, in this day and age, where young people are being tempted\u2014not only to question the illicit use of their sexuality and their identity\u2014but they are tempted to switch identities\u2014what would you say to the mom who is fearful about a son or a daughter who may be experimenting right now with same-sex attraction?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would say a couple things\u2014that there is no sin that your child will ever be exposed to or tempted to participate in that is outside of the powerful, forgiving, transforming grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>We can\u2019t value-rate sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd these are the sins for which Christ died. So, you need to have that kind of confidence. The Bible does offer truth that does actually set us free, empowered by the Spirit of God. Be a champion of truth. Truth is a powerful, powerful thing. So, be bold\u2014be consistent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third thing I would say is confess your struggles to your kids. Stand with them and talk of the hope and help you find, as a broken person, in the presence and promises of the Lord Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and identify with them. Let them know, as you deal with your own selfishness and brokenness, that there is nothing they can do or nothing that they\u2019ve done that is going to keep them from the love of God\u2014if they know Christ as Savior and Lord\u2014and He\u2019s willing to accept them back. He\u2019s willing to welcome them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I said to many young people that: \u201cThe most painful moment of Christ on the cross was not physical\u2014it was relational.\u201d\u00a0 It was that moment that the Father turns His back on the Son\u2014and Jesus Christ: \u201c<em>Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani<\/em>?\u2014My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?\u201d\u00a0 Jesus took every piece of your rejection. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, no matter what\u2014you will never again see the back of God\u2019s head. I don\u2019t have to live in shame. I don\u2019t have to live in hiding. I don\u2019t have to be afraid of being known because there is nothing that could ever be known about me that isn\u2019t covered by the blood of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that was the love that turned my life around in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> year of my young life\u2014the love of God demonstrated in the book of Romans\u2014where I began to realize that my back was turned to Him. His wasn\u2019t turned toward me, and He was calling me back\u2014wanting me to experience His grace, and forgiveness, and love, and fellowship with Him, and become the person He made me to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat decision of coming back was, I think, the most important decision of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it was a decision about where your worship was going to go. That\u2019s essentially what we\u2019ve been talking about\u2014what you talk about in your book. These are worship choices that we make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not one and done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not that I did that at 20, and \u201cWell, that sealed it.\u201d\u00a0 Now, 40 some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It sealed some things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201440-some years later, it is still an issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re still in the battle. We\u2019re all still in a battle because we still wrestle against\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014our own flesh and blood.
