You\u2019ve talked about how we need to fulfill our promises. Is there a third takeaway that you would give a dad\u2014who really resonates with the title of your book, <em>The Good Dad<\/em>\u2014and really wants to be one but just needs another hook \/ another handle to grab hold of with his sons and daughters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Well, I think that idea of commitments and certainly love\u2014those are the core\u2014that is the foundation. We still need to be dads. I think a lot of people listening might think this is a really soft book\u2014almost an effeminate book. I\u2019m not saying that, as a father. You also need to bring reality to your children. You need to teach them right from wrong. I would only add that element to it\u2014to what we\u2019ve talked about already.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dad needs to be there and to teach his children those things that only a dad can teach. I think of it this way\u2014you look at a mom. This is the 80\/20 rule\u2014so if you\u2019re a mom that doesn\u2019t fit this, don\u2019t be offended by what I\u2019m about to say. Generally, moms <em>know<\/em> that they are the nurturers; right? And the kids know that they are the nurturers. A child skins his or her knee\u2014mom\u2019s going to clean it\u2014you know\u2014pat it \/ put a Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on it, \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Dad\u2019s the wild card. You don\u2019t know how Dad\u2019s going to respond. For example, my fathers\u2014if I could use the plural\u2014would either say, \u201cDon\u2019t touch it,\u201d or, \u201cMen don\u2019t cry. Boys shouldn\u2019t cry.\u201d You\u2019ve got a lot of mixed messages from dad. So, when you look at it, fathers have such a great influence. Moms are <em>predictable<\/em>, by and large. Your mother\u2019s love is <em>predictable<\/em>. Dad\u2019s love is not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look at that\u2014that\u2019s why dads wield such influence in their children because you don\u2019t know how your dad is going to go: \u201cDoes he really love me?\u201d You\u2019re always asking that question in your heart: \u201cDoes dad really love me?\u201d We\u2019ve got to make sure that kids leave home, at 18\/19, knowing, \u201cI am loved by my dad.\u201d That will make all the difference in the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What we\u2019re talking about here is found in the book of Proverbs, too, where a father looks at his son and says, \u201cListen, my son, for I give you sound teaching.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then he\u2019s warning him about some of the true traps of life. At the Daly household\u2014for your two boys\u2014you\u2019re getting ready to embark on the most dangerous era that, I think, any human being engages in\u2014the adolescent years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What are some of the boundaries that you and Jean have for your boys\u2014that you have set\u2014you have helped set and helped shape\u2014for your sons?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> I think one of the most important is to be able to apologize to my boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can remember a time when I had done something \/ acted inappropriately with Trent, my oldest son. I had just gotten angry about something. It wasn\u2019t right! I had to be brave enough, as dad, to go into his bedroom where he was sobbing because I had overreacted to something. I had wounded him. I had to walk in there and say: \u201cTrent, you know what? Nobody\u2019s perfect. Sometimes I think you think I want you to act perfectly. But you have to know, I realize you\u2019re not perfect. But you know what? Dad\u2019s not perfect either. I hurt you tonight, and I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis face lit up. I couldn\u2019t believe it! I thought I had just given him chocolate. He just smiled at me and said, \u201cThank you, Dad. I love you.\u201d It sets the tone for the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you talk about launching into the teen years, what do you need to do? You need to have a <em>good<\/em> relationship with that teenager. How do you do it?\u2014by being real, by being vulnerable, and by being connected emotionally\u2014we dads have a hard time connecting, emotionally, to our kids. We\u2019re awkward with them. We don\u2019t know how to deal with them. They always go to mom: \u201cMom, I\u2019ve got a problem.\u201d We\u2019ve got to be there too. We should see them coming to us saying, \u201cCan you help me, Dad?\u201d If those things are happening, I think you\u2019re in a good place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our listeners about the father\/son trip that you took with your boys. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Well, there were two\u2014I mean, the one I took with Trent with Adventures in Fatherhood. <em>Focus on the Family<\/em> has been doing that for 25\/30 years, where we go out near Yosemite. It\u2019s <em>rough<\/em>\u2014I mean, it\u2019s four days of <em>rough<\/em>. You don\u2019t have tents\u2014you sleep out under the stars. If it rains, find a tree. And then you do rock rappelling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the rocks is called the Prowl\u2014it is 180 feet, which is about a 15-story building \/ 16-story building. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember, you know, seeing Trent, who has lacked confidence at times. He\u2019s a big kid, but he doesn\u2019t have great confidence sometimes. He got in that environment and was just doing great. He was like Spiderman\u2014he was going down the rock. The guide said\u2014now, of the kids, there were probably six of us in this one group\u2014parents and kids\u2014and the guide is saying, \u201cOn a scale of one to ten, who wants to go down this Prowl?\u201d One kid says, [Hesitantly] \u201cOne.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> And then another\u2014a little girl\u2014said, [Hesitantly] \u201cSeven.\u201d Trent says: [Confidently] \u201cTen! I\u2019m ready to go!\u201d \u201cMan, that\u2019s Trent! That\u2019s great!\u201d So we got down. That night, we were sitting around the campfire. The boys and girls shared things about their fathers. Man, I\u2019m telling you, it was amazing. Trent just said: \u201cDad, you make my life worth living for. I love you.\u201d This was my 12-year-old!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got back to the little campsite because we all slept in separate areas\u2014father and son or father and daughter. We got back there, and he was just beaming. He said, \u201cDad, I\u2019m just so proud to be your son!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are moments\u2014and I think one of the key things, as fathers, is that we have to create <em>moments<\/em>. Dennis, you talk about this. It\u2019s kind of that standing stone. That was a moment for our relationship\u2014me apologizing to Trent, although hard, was a moment that will stand in his heart. He will remember that the rest of his life and it will help shape his character. That\u2019s what we have to do, as fathers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one thing you modeled in that story that I want to make sure every dad gets\u2014that he doesn\u2019t miss this at all. You modeled humility\u2014humility that\u2019s teachable, humility that admits mistakes, humility that asks for forgiveness\u2014gets real, gets down on a knee and looks a child, face to face \/ eye to eye, and connects with them, heart to heart. I think that\u2019s why your son described you the way he did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Ahhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s why you gave him meaning, and purpose, and definition to his life. You couldn\u2019t have given a better illustration for dads, who are listening today, to take away and go back and think, \u201cHow am I modeling this with my son, with my daughters, and, also, with my wife?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because that is the essence, in my opinion, of spiritual growth and how we become like Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJim, you are a great comrade and warrior in the battle for the family. We appreciate you. We appreciate the team at <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>\u2014love what you guys are doing. You\u2019ve talked about how we need to fulfill our promises. Is there a third takeaway that you would give a dad\u2014who really resonates with the title of your book, <em>The Good Dad<\/em>\u2014and really wants to be one but just needs another hook \/ another handle to grab hold of with his sons and daughters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Well, I think that idea of commitments and certainly love\u2014those are the core\u2014that is the foundation. We still need to be dads. I think a lot of people listening might think this is a really soft book\u2014almost an effeminate book. I\u2019m not saying that, as a father. You also need to bring reality to your children. You need to teach them right from wrong. I would only add that element to it\u2014to what we\u2019ve talked about already.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dad needs to be there and to teach his children those things that only a dad can teach. I think of it this way\u2014you look at a mom. This is the 80\/20 rule\u2014so if you\u2019re a mom that doesn\u2019t fit this, don\u2019t be offended by what I\u2019m about to say. Generally, moms <em>know<\/em> that they are the nurturers; right? And the kids know that they are the nurturers. A child skins his or her knee\u2014mom\u2019s going to clean it\u2014you know\u2014pat it \/ put a Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on it, \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Dad\u2019s the wild card. You don\u2019t know how Dad\u2019s going to respond. For example, my fathers\u2014if I could use the plural\u2014would either say, \u201cDon\u2019t touch it,\u201d or, \u201cMen don\u2019t cry. Boys shouldn\u2019t cry.\u201d You\u2019ve got a lot of mixed messages from dad. So, when you look at it, fathers have such a great influence. Moms are <em>predictable<\/em>, by and large. Your mother\u2019s love is <em>predictable<\/em>. Dad\u2019s love is not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look at that\u2014that\u2019s why dads wield such influence in their children because you don\u2019t know how your dad is going to go: \u201cDoes he really love me?\u201d You\u2019re always asking that question in your heart: \u201cDoes dad really love me?\u201d We\u2019ve got to make sure that kids leave home, at 18\/19, knowing, \u201cI am loved by my dad.\u201d That will make all the difference in the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What we\u2019re talking about here is found in the book of Proverbs, too, where a father looks at his son and says, \u201cListen, my son, for I give you sound teaching.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then he\u2019s warning him about some of the true traps of life. At the Daly household\u2014for your two boys\u2014you\u2019re getting ready to embark on the most dangerous era that, I think, any human being engages in\u2014the adolescent years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What are some of the boundaries that you and Jean have for your boys\u2014that you have set\u2014you have helped set and helped shape\u2014for your sons?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> I think one of the most important is to be able to apologize to my boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can remember a time when I had done something \/ acted inappropriately with Trent, my oldest son. I had just gotten angry about something. It wasn\u2019t right! I had to be brave enough, as dad, to go into his bedroom where he was sobbing because I had overreacted to something. I had wounded him. I had to walk in there and say: \u201cTrent, you know what? Nobody\u2019s perfect. Sometimes I think you think I want you to act perfectly. But you have to know, I realize you\u2019re not perfect. But you know what? Dad\u2019s not perfect either. I hurt you tonight, and I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis face lit up. I couldn\u2019t believe it! I thought I had just given him chocolate. He just smiled at me and said, \u201cThank you, Dad. I love you.\u201d It sets the tone for the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you talk about launching into the teen years, what do you need to do? You need to have a <em>good<\/em> relationship with that teenager. How do you do it?\u2014by being real, by being vulnerable, and by being connected emotionally\u2014we dads have a hard time connecting, emotionally, to our kids. We\u2019re awkward with them. We don\u2019t know how to deal with them. They always go to mom: \u201cMom, I\u2019ve got a problem.\u201d We\u2019ve got to be there too. We should see them coming to us saying, \u201cCan you help me, Dad?\u201d If those things are happening, I think you\u2019re in a good place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our listeners about the father\/son trip that you took with your boys. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Well, there were two\u2014I mean, the one I took with Trent with Adventures in Fatherhood. <em>Focus on the Family<\/em> has been doing that for 25\/30 years, where we go out near Yosemite. It\u2019s <em>rough<\/em>\u2014I mean, it\u2019s four days of <em>rough<\/em>. You don\u2019t have tents\u2014you sleep out under the stars. If it rains, find a tree. And then you do rock rappelling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the rocks is called the Prowl\u2014it is 180 feet, which is about a 15-story building \/ 16-story building. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember, you know, seeing Trent, who has lacked confidence at times. He\u2019s a big kid, but he doesn\u2019t have great confidence sometimes. He got in that environment and was just doing great. He was like Spiderman\u2014he was going down the rock. The guide said\u2014now, of the kids, there were probably six of us in this one group\u2014parents and kids\u2014and the guide is saying, \u201cOn a scale of one to ten, who wants to go down this Prowl?\u201d One kid says, [Hesitantly] \u201cOne.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> And then another\u2014a little girl\u2014said, [Hesitantly] \u201cSeven.\u201d Trent says: [Confidently] \u201cTen! I\u2019m ready to go!\u201d \u201cMan, that\u2019s Trent! That\u2019s great!\u201d So we got down. That night, we were sitting around the campfire. The boys and girls shared things about their fathers. Man, I\u2019m telling you, it was amazing. Trent just said: \u201cDad, you make my life worth living for. I love you.\u201d This was my 12-year-old!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got back to the little campsite because we all slept in separate areas\u2014father and son or father and daughter. We got back there, and he was just beaming. He said, \u201cDad, I\u2019m just so proud to be your son!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are moments\u2014and I think one of the key things, as fathers, is that we have to create <em>moments<\/em>. Dennis, you talk about this. It\u2019s kind of that standing stone. That was a moment for our relationship\u2014me apologizing to Trent, although hard, was a moment that will stand in his heart. He will remember that the rest of his life and it will help shape his character. That\u2019s what we have to do, as fathers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s one thing you modeled in that story that I want to make sure every dad gets\u2014that he doesn\u2019t miss this at all. You modeled humility\u2014humility that\u2019s teachable, humility that admits mistakes, humility that asks for forgiveness\u2014gets real, gets down on a knee and looks a child, face to face \/ eye to eye, and connects with them, heart to heart. I think that\u2019s why your son described you the way he did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Ahhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s why you gave him meaning, and purpose, and definition to his life. You couldn\u2019t have given a better illustration for dads, who are listening today, to take away and go back and think, \u201cHow am I modeling this with my son, with my daughters, and, also, with my wife?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because that is the essence, in my opinion, of spiritual growth and how we become like Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJim, you are a great comrade and warrior in the battle for the family. We appreciate you. We appreciate the team at <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>\u2014love what you guys are doing.
