Then, I\u2019ll tell our listeners kind of\u2014\u201cJust leave the driving to us. Jack and Lisa Hibbs join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Lisa, Jack, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Thank you\u2014nice to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jack and Lisa founded a church\u2014a little start-up church there in Southern California called Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, which has blossomed to\u2014now have about nine to ten thousand adults attending it. They\u2019ve written a book called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>. They\u2019re talking about the heritage they were given and the legacy that they want to leave. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, what they are saying is\u2014they want to leave a different legacy than the one they were given. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we decided we would call both of their daughters and just let them share about the legacy they were given, as children of a pastor and pastor\u2019s wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, you\u2019re not nervous at all now; are you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, this is amazing!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re going to put your\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the door?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, I think we have Rebecca on the line. [Laughter]\u00a0 This is fun!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, keep saying it over and over again, Mom\u2014just keep saying, \u201cThis is so much fun.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Rebecca, your mom and dad have shared a little bit of their background and kind of where they came from and their desire to leave a legacy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I know that they don\u2019t want some kind of pie-in-the-sky, airbrushed, photo-shopped\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, we want the real dirt on your mom and dad!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re calling, Rebecca. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I think we like the airbrushed better. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Rebecca, just unpack a little bit of\u2014what would you say best describes the legacy you were given out of this family you grew up in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Well, definitely, Christian\u2014godly, godly example\u2014always\u2014everything we did was always like that. Our friends were Christians. As we got older, guys that we were interested in dating\u2014they had to be Christian. And obviously, we\u2019re carrying that on with our three-and-a-half-year-old daughter\u2014putting God first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She can only date Christian guys at three-and-a-half?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 No, no. If Daddy has his way, she won\u2019t ever be dating. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious because you grew up as a P.K.; right?\u2014you are a preacher\u2019s kid. Did you ever feel that P.K. pressure and like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cI don\u2019t want to\u2014I want to be in a new family\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. No, I had a great experience with that. My mom took\u2014made a huge sacrifice. I was homeschooled with her from kindergarten through eleventh grade. I really appreciate that. That\u2019s something that I\u2019m going to continue with my daughter when it\u2019s time for her to do school\u2014is homeschooling her. I just think it\u2019s so much better. I\u2019m very thankful that my parents did that for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you feel pressure like, \u201cI\u2019ve got to be Polly Perfect\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. No, I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. My\u2014I don\u2019t\u2014I guess you credit my parents for that!\u00a0 I know a lot of pastor\u2019s kids have that urge to rebel, too, against all that. I didn\u2019t feel that. I was\u2014I enjoyed it. I was happy. Maybe some of the things I didn\u2019t enjoy about being a pastor\u2019s kid were\u2014everybody kind of, maybe, looks at you and holds you to a higher standard. That\u2019s something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u2014difficult to deal with, but I didn\u2019t have anything negative about that\u2014homeschooling or being a pastor\u2019s kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the words that I would use to describe\u2014might seem a little odd\u2014but to me, it\u2019s a good thing\u2014is \u201cuneventful.\u201d\u00a0 It was uneventful in <em>a good<\/em> way\u2014I was sheltered \/ I was protected. I didn\u2019t have any horrible tragedies or bad things that I had to go through. And I credit a lot of that to my parents. I don\u2019t regret that at all. I\u2019m very blessed to have felt that; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rebecca, this is Dennis. I have to tell you about a phone call I received last night from daughter whose name is Ashley\u2014like your sister; okay?\u00a0 Ashley called me last night at about 9:30. We saw the phone ring and we thought: \u201cOh, they\u2019re pregnant. We got another baby on the way,\u201d [Laughter] because we don\u2019t get a phone call at that time of night. But she got on the phone. She just said, \u201cI just want to thank you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI just came from a bunko party, and\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And is that where they are playing a card game, or is that where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Dice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014they sleepover?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s a card game; alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s a bunch of moms who kind of have a moment of sanity in the midst of their month to kind of get together and have fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI was the only woman in our group who had never seen <em>Pretty Woman<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t feel weird about that at all.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI want to thank you for that.\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what I hear <em>you<\/em> saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>I can\u2014yes, I totally understand what she is saying, yes. And it\u2019s not a bad thing. Maybe, going through your teenage years, you might think you\u2019re different; but when you get on that other side of 20-plus, you\u2019ll realize what a blessing it was and how you want to do that with your kids. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rebecca, you had a chance to read your mom and dad\u2019s book before it went to the publisher; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No, I did not. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 Oh! So, have you read it <em>since<\/em> it got back from the publisher?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is bad to confess on radio here!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Hey, you wanted it\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I wanted the pure, unvarnished truth. They\u2019ve been talking about the heritage they were given from the families they grew up in. We just talked to your sister and got all the dirt on your parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and we found out that she has not read the book yet. Have you read the book yet, Ashley?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>No. I share that thing with her. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And every mom across the country is angry at us for asking both of these moms, on the radio, if they\u2019ve read their parents\u2019 book. How would you describe the family you grew up in?\u00a0 What kind of legacy were you given?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>It was actually a fun home. We did a lot of fun stuff. My parents were always there with their time. They just were constantly attending to us. My dad is always\u2014when he was home, he was ready to play with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wasn\u2019t just absent or tired. My mom took the time to homeschool us. So, they were always just around and there for us. We never felt like we were raising ourselves or just didn\u2019t have anyone around. They always gave us that time and made things fun and took us on vacation every year\u2014camping\u2014and just really gave us their time and attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ashley, I asked your sister about the whole P.K. thing\u2014you know, growing up as a preacher\u2019s kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was that hard for you being a P.K.?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>For me, it was. My sister, she\u2019s more social\u2014and the attention and everything was fine for her. She kind of enjoyed it and had a ton of friends all the time. I was very shy\u2014so, people wanting to get to know us kind of made me cower away a little bit and even be introverted a little bit more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, I have a daughter like you. I guess he\u2019s\u2014what?\u2014a year-and-a-half old now. Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What do you want to pass on to him that you got from your parents?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Honestly, I\u2019m already talking about homeschooling him and how good that was for us. By the time I actually went to school\u2014my parents had just established in us like a good sense of who we were and what we believed in and why. So, by the time I went to school, I did not deal with peer pressure at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll my friends\u2014they still were drinking, and partying, and having fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just never once was tempted by it because it just hadn\u2019t been something that, up until that point, carried any weight with me because they\u2019d given us so much time. I really feel like I want to do that for him. I want him to have that confidence\u2014and just like giving him a good life\u2014and, obviously, getting into ministry, and finding his gifts, and all of that is huge for us too. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ll tell you what. Your parents have told us already that both of their girls are <em>amazing<\/em> moms, and <em>amazing <\/em>daughters, and that what they see you doing with your kids is so far ahead of what they did with you when you were little. They\u2019re just so excited about what God has in store for you and just how you are being a woman of God in your home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think just the fact that you picked up the phone when we called is evidence of God\u2019s <em>abundant <\/em>grace. Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It has got to be\u2014for a mom and dad to hear your daughters just reflect back and say, \u201cYou know, it was good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You kind of go: \u201cReally?!\u201d because, in the midst of it, as parents, you don\u2019t feel that way; do you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re aware that it\u2019s not perfect\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014as parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>And you know the decision to homeschool was <em>huge<\/em> because that was at a time when I didn\u2019t have the support that, now, homeschoolers have. Homeschooling was\u2014I was cutting-edge, back then, in the mid-80s. I mean, there wasn\u2019t many doing it. To hear both of them reflect on that\u2014how important it was to both of them\u2014because I remember being frustrated, as a young mom, and thinking, \u201cUh!\u201d\u00a0 I used to threaten them with public school. [Laughter]\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know what public school was; but when they acted up, I\u2019d say: \u201cThat\u2019s it. You\u2019re going to public school.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo, I don\u2019t want to go to public school!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They are going to go to jail or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly, they had no idea what it was. But the Lord used to always remind me\u2014when I would have those days where I was losing it and didn\u2019t want to do it anymore\u2014and I would hear from Him\u2014tell me that the fruit was not for now. It would be later. I would see fruit <em>later<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>And now, I just heard it!\u00a0 So, I am blessed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you did. And I was watching your face as you were listening to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was pretty powerful to hear both of your daughters say, \u201cYou know, I recognize the sacrifice that my mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>And it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>It\u2019s huge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand the investment.\u201d\u00a0 And like your daughter, Ashley, just said, \u201cIf you want to defeat peer pressure, homeschooling is one of the most powerful ways to do that.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not that you remove them from all the pressure\u2014it\u2019s just that you give them a very strong sense of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Foundation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014identity in Christ and around your family so they can stand strong in the midst of the winds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, with all of this focus this week on how we can purposefully and intentionally pass on a more important \/ a more vibrant legacy to our children, I\u2019m wondering what you do if you are sitting down today with Dave and Stephanie\u2014the couple that you outline in your book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a couple\u2014both of them coming from broken, damaged backgrounds. They get together. They get married. They <em>think<\/em> it\u2019s going to be great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwo years in \/ three years in, they are ready to chuck the marriage. They don\u2019t recognize what is going on. How do you intersect with a couple like that, in that moment, and carry the message of this book to them to give them a fresh sense of hope?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, the number one thing to realize is just by changing your mate is not going to fix a thing. What happens when someone says: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 The grass is going to be greener on the other side. I\u2019m going to bail on this.\u201d\u00a0 What you are really doing is you are jumping out of a redeemable situation; and you\u2019re dragging the very same dilemmas, problems, issues into a brand-new one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Plus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Plus more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Plus more\u2014good point. And it\u2019s not going to be any better. That\u2019s why the statistics are overwhelming. When a marriage is broken up and then someone remarries, the percentage of second, third, fourth marriages are greatly increased. Why?\u00a0 You are bringing the baggage in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe greatest thing to do is to honor the institution of marriage designed by God\u2014work at it\u2014work <em>hard <\/em>at it. Look, none of us at this table have done it perfectly; and we would never confess that. The great thing is our God is perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>When you begin to lean on His power, His strength, His resources\u2014and the fact that it\u2019s His will that your marriage be recovered\u2014with that, you can, I believe, do anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis used to talk about the fact that\u2014you used to have what you called the prayer of the helpless parent; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what\u2019s the prayer?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHelp!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. It is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, seriously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI do not know what to do!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m at my wit\u2019s end,\u201d\u2014and whether it\u2019s the prayer of the helpless parent or the prayer of the helpless spouse, it\u2014I think one of the first places you\u2019ve got to start in a marriage turnaround, like you talk about, is begin to put God first. One of the ways you do that is by praying every day with your spouse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and bringing your junk and your stuff before God every day. That was the thing we did last night before we went to sleep. We prayed about a couple of needs that are taking place in our family. We brought them before God. And we left them there. Now, did I wake up thinking about it this morning?\u00a0 Yes. And I brought them back to God again this morning; but every family has got its stuff\u2014its dysfunction that it brings in\u2014and got issues that you\u2019re dealing with today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Years ago\u2014years ago, we were in a tough spot in our marriage. We decided to write down three things that I was needing, or lacking, or something in the marriage; and he wrote down three things. And instead of concentrating on those three things, we exchanged it. That became the prayer requests. I am now praying about his three needs instead of focusing on <em>my<\/em> desires or whatever my needs were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more about doing what the Bible says, \u201cEsteeming others higher\u201d \/ \u201cdying to the flesh\u201d\u2014all my desires. I\u2019m to be promoting and blessing him with\u2014it\u2019s hard sometimes!\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Galatians 6 talks about bearing one another\u2019s burdens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>You know, what she is saying is\u2014it is really hard to stay in an argument or to perpetuate an argument when you are reading the Scripture together. If a couple will commit to: \u201cWe\u2019re going to read the Bible no matter what kind of day we\u2019re having,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s pretty amazing because we can be at each other, and then, do our\u2014what feels like, at the moment\u2014our routine Bible reading\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014and God\u2019s Word and His Spirit is so powerful that, by the time we get done with our daily Bible reading,\u2014somebody might say, \u201cWell, it\u2019s so simple\u2014a daily Bible reading.\u201d\u00a0 Hey, listen! It\u2019s kind of hard to perpetuate an argument after reading the Word of God. It\u2019s amazing!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, but does one of you ever go, \u201cI am not ready to read the Bible\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, listen, I have to tell you this quick story. This is probably 15\/20 years ago. I mean, we\u2019ve been married almost 35 years;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I know where she\u2019s going to go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014but we had an argument about something. We were actually both in bed,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014laying there. Who knows what we were arguing about\u2014but we were laying there. Finally, I think you said, \u201cWell, I guess we should go read our Bible.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cWell, yes, I guess we should.\u201d\u00a0 So, we got up\u2014went out on the couch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u201cOpen,\u201d\u2014I go, \u201cWhere are we reading?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know; First John?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay, 1 John.\u201d\u00a0 So, we open it. We\u2019re going to read every other verse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Out loud. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cIf we say we have no sin\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014First John. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Come on!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We got a few verses in; and we\u2019re like, \u201cOh.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We confess our sin one to another; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>You know your tone\u2014yes. Your tone <em>slowly <\/em>starts to change. They literally become your victory if you let Him have them. They\u2019ll either pull you down to the pit or, if you give them to Him, He\u2019ll use them to raise you up. They\u2019ve written a book called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, Rebecca, just unpack a little bit of\u2014what would you say best describes the legacy you were given out of this family you grew up in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Well, definitely, Christian\u2014godly, godly example\u2014always\u2014everything we did was always like that. Our friends were Christians. As we got older, guys that we were interested in dating\u2014they had to be Christian. And obviously, we\u2019re carrying that on with our three-and-a-half-year-old daughter\u2014putting God first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She can only date Christian guys at three-and-a-half?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 No, no. If Daddy has his way, she won\u2019t ever be dating. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious because you grew up as a P.K.; right?\u2014you are a preacher\u2019s kid. Did you ever feel that P.K. pressure and like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cI don\u2019t want to\u2014I want to be in a new family\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. No, I had a great experience with that. My mom took\u2014made a huge sacrifice. I was homeschooled with her from kindergarten through eleventh grade. I really appreciate that. That\u2019s something that I\u2019m going to continue with my daughter when it\u2019s time for her to do school\u2014is homeschooling her. I just think it\u2019s so much better. I\u2019m very thankful that my parents did that for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you feel pressure like, \u201cI\u2019ve got to be Polly Perfect\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No. No, I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. My\u2014I don\u2019t\u2014I guess you credit my parents for that!\u00a0 I know a lot of pastor\u2019s kids have that urge to rebel, too, against all that. I didn\u2019t feel that. I was\u2014I enjoyed it. I was happy. Maybe some of the things I didn\u2019t enjoy about being a pastor\u2019s kid were\u2014everybody kind of, maybe, looks at you and holds you to a higher standard. That\u2019s something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>\u2014difficult to deal with, but I didn\u2019t have anything negative about that\u2014homeschooling or being a pastor\u2019s kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the words that I would use to describe\u2014might seem a little odd\u2014but to me, it\u2019s a good thing\u2014is \u201cuneventful.\u201d\u00a0 It was uneventful in <em>a good<\/em> way\u2014I was sheltered \/ I was protected. I didn\u2019t have any horrible tragedies or bad things that I had to go through. And I credit a lot of that to my parents. I don\u2019t regret that at all. I\u2019m very blessed to have felt that; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Rebecca, this is Dennis. I have to tell you about a phone call I received last night from daughter whose name is Ashley\u2014like your sister; okay?\u00a0 Ashley called me last night at about 9:30. We saw the phone ring and we thought: \u201cOh, they\u2019re pregnant. We got another baby on the way,\u201d [Laughter] because we don\u2019t get a phone call at that time of night. But she got on the phone. She just said, \u201cI just want to thank you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI just came from a bunko party, and\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And is that where they are playing a card game, or is that where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Dice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014they sleepover?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s a card game; alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s a bunch of moms who kind of have a moment of sanity in the midst of their month to kind of get together and have fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI was the only woman in our group who had never seen <em>Pretty Woman<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t feel weird about that at all.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI want to thank you for that.\u201d\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what I hear <em>you<\/em> saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>I can\u2014yes, I totally understand what she is saying, yes. And it\u2019s not a bad thing. Maybe, going through your teenage years, you might think you\u2019re different; but when you get on that other side of 20-plus, you\u2019ll realize what a blessing it was and how you want to do that with your kids. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rebecca, you had a chance to read your mom and dad\u2019s book before it went to the publisher; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca: <\/strong>No, I did not. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 Oh! They\u2019ve been talking about the heritage they were given from the families they grew up in. We just talked to your sister and got all the dirt on your parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and we found out that she has not read the book yet. Have you read the book yet, Ashley?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>No. I share that thing with her. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s alright. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And every mom across the country is angry at us for asking both of these moms, on the radio, if they\u2019ve read their parents\u2019 book. How would you describe the family you grew up in?\u00a0 What kind of legacy were you given?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>It was actually a fun home. We did a lot of fun stuff. My parents were always there with their time. They just were constantly attending to us. My dad is always\u2014when he was home, he was ready to play with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wasn\u2019t just absent or tired. My mom took the time to homeschool us. So, they were always just around and there for us. We never felt like we were raising ourselves or just didn\u2019t have anyone around. They always gave us that time and made things fun and took us on vacation every year\u2014camping\u2014and just really gave us their time and attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Ashley, I asked your sister about the whole P.K. thing\u2014you know, growing up as a preacher\u2019s kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was that hard for you being a P.K.?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>For me, it was. My sister, she\u2019s more social\u2014and the attention and everything was fine for her. She kind of enjoyed it and had a ton of friends all the time. I was very shy\u2014so, people wanting to get to know us kind of made me cower away a little bit and even be introverted a little bit more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, I have a daughter like you. It\u2019s like\u2014anybody turns the spotlight anywhere near her\u2014and it is like, \u201cGet me out of here!\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes; yes, exactly.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just getting you on the radio\u2014we\u2019re lucky for this; aren\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes, very. I guess he\u2019s\u2014what?\u2014a year-and-a-half old now. Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What do you want to pass on to him that you got from your parents?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ashley: <\/strong>Honestly, I\u2019m already talking about homeschooling him and how good that was for us. By the time I actually went to school\u2014my parents had just established in us like a good sense of who we were and what we believed in and why. So, by the time I went to school, I did not deal with peer pressure at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll my friends\u2014they still were drinking, and partying, and having fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just never once was tempted by it because it just hadn\u2019t been something that, up until that point, carried any weight with me because they\u2019d given us so much time. I really feel like I want to do that for him. I want him to have that confidence\u2014and just like giving him a good life\u2014and, obviously, getting into ministry, and finding his gifts, and all of that is huge for us too. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ll tell you what. Your parents have told us already that both of their girls are <em>amazing<\/em> moms, and <em>amazing <\/em>daughters, and that what they see you doing with your kids is so far ahead of what they did with you when you were little. They\u2019re just so excited about what God has in store for you and just how you are being a woman of God in your home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think just the fact that you picked up the phone when we called is evidence of God\u2019s <em>abundant <\/em>grace. Homeschooling was\u2014I was cutting-edge, back then, in the mid-80s. I mean, there wasn\u2019t many doing it. To hear both of them reflect on that\u2014how important it was to both of them\u2014because I remember being frustrated, as a young mom, and thinking, \u201cUh!\u201d\u00a0 I used to threaten them with public school. [Laughter]\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know what public school was; but when they acted up, I\u2019d say: \u201cThat\u2019s it. You\u2019re going to public school.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNo, I don\u2019t want to go to public school!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They are going to go to jail or something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly, they had no idea what it was. But the Lord used to always remind me\u2014when I would have those days where I was losing it and didn\u2019t want to do it anymore\u2014and I would hear from Him\u2014tell me that the fruit was not for now. It would be later. I would see fruit <em>later<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>And now, I just heard it!\u00a0 So, I am blessed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you did. And I was watching your face as you were listening to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was pretty powerful to hear both of your daughters say, \u201cYou know, I recognize the sacrifice that my mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>And it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>It\u2019s huge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand the investment.\u201d\u00a0 And like your daughter, Ashley, just said, \u201cIf you want to defeat peer pressure, homeschooling is one of the most powerful ways to do that.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not that you remove them from all the pressure\u2014it\u2019s just that you give them a very strong sense of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Foundation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014identity in Christ and around your family so they can stand strong in the midst of the winds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, with all of this focus this week on how we can purposefully and intentionally pass on a more important \/ a more vibrant legacy to our children, I\u2019m wondering what you do if you are sitting down today with Dave and Stephanie\u2014the couple that you outline in your book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a couple\u2014both of them coming from broken, damaged backgrounds. They get together. They get married. They <em>think<\/em> it\u2019s going to be great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwo years in \/ three years in, they are ready to chuck the marriage. They don\u2019t recognize what is going on. How do you intersect with a couple like that, in that moment, and carry the message of this book to them to give them a fresh sense of hope?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, the number one thing to realize is just by changing your mate is not going to fix a thing. What happens when someone says: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 The grass is going to be greener on the other side. I\u2019m going to bail on this.\u201d\u00a0 What you are really doing is you are jumping out of a redeemable situation; and you\u2019re dragging the very same dilemmas, problems, issues into a brand-new one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Plus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Plus more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Plus more\u2014good point. And it\u2019s not going to be any better. That\u2019s why the statistics are overwhelming. When a marriage is broken up and then someone remarries, the percentage of second, third, fourth marriages are greatly increased. Why?\u00a0 You are bringing the baggage in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe greatest thing to do is to honor the institution of marriage designed by God\u2014work at it\u2014work <em>hard <\/em>at it. Look, none of us at this table have done it perfectly; and we would never confess that. The great thing is our God is perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>When you begin to lean on His power, His strength, His resources\u2014and the fact that it\u2019s His will that your marriage be recovered\u2014with that, you can, I believe, do anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis used to talk about the fact that\u2014you used to have what you called the prayer of the helpless parent; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what\u2019s the prayer?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cHelp!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. It is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, seriously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI do not know what to do!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m at my wit\u2019s end,\u201d\u2014and whether it\u2019s the prayer of the helpless parent or the prayer of the helpless spouse, it\u2014I think one of the first places you\u2019ve got to start in a marriage turnaround, like you talk about, is begin to put God first. One of the ways you do that is by praying every day with your spouse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and bringing your junk and your stuff before God every day. That was the thing we did last night before we went to sleep. We prayed about a couple of needs that are taking place in our family. We brought them before God. And we left them there. Now, did I wake up thinking about it this morning?\u00a0 Yes. And I brought them back to God again this morning; but every family has got its stuff\u2014its dysfunction that it brings in\u2014and got issues that you\u2019re dealing with today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Years ago\u2014years ago, we were in a tough spot in our marriage. We decided to write down three things that I was needing, or lacking, or something in the marriage; and he wrote down three things. And instead of concentrating on those three things, we exchanged it. That became the prayer requests. I am now praying about his three needs instead of focusing on <em>my<\/em> desires or whatever my needs were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more about doing what the Bible says, \u201cEsteeming others higher\u201d \/ \u201cdying to the flesh\u201d\u2014all my desires. I\u2019m to be promoting and blessing him with\u2014it\u2019s hard sometimes!\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Galatians 6 talks about bearing one another\u2019s burdens. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>You know, what she is saying is\u2014it is really hard to stay in an argument or to perpetuate an argument when you are reading the Scripture together. If a couple will commit to: \u201cWe\u2019re going to read the Bible no matter what kind of day we\u2019re having,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s pretty amazing because we can be at each other, and then, do our\u2014what feels like, at the moment\u2014our routine Bible reading\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014and God\u2019s Word and His Spirit is so powerful that, by the time we get done with our daily Bible reading,\u2014somebody might say, \u201cWell, it\u2019s so simple\u2014a daily Bible reading.\u201d\u00a0 Hey, listen! It\u2019s kind of hard to perpetuate an argument after reading the Word of God. It\u2019s amazing!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, but does one of you ever go, \u201cI am not ready to read the Bible\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, listen, I have to tell you this quick story. This is probably 15\/20 years ago. I mean, we\u2019ve been married almost 35 years;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I know where she\u2019s going to go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014but we had an argument about something. We were actually both in bed,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014laying there. Who knows what we were arguing about\u2014but we were laying there. Finally, I think you said, \u201cWell, I guess we should go read our Bible.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cWell, yes, I guess we should.\u201d\u00a0 So, we got up\u2014went out on the couch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u201cOpen,\u201d\u2014I go, \u201cWhere are we reading?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know; First John?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay, 1 John.\u201d\u00a0 So, we open it. We\u2019re going to read every other verse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Out loud. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cIf we say we have no sin\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014First John. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Come on!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We got a few verses in; and we\u2019re like, \u201cOh.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We confess our sin one to another; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>You know your tone\u2014yes. Your tone <em>slowly <\/em>starts to change. You realize it is the Word of God who starts\u2014His Word is what changes our hearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are different voices we can listen to in our marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the voices from the culture are not the right ones, but the voice of Scripture will remind you of the truth and remind you of your responsibility\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in the most intimate of all relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the truth is\u2014you can have a different, healthier, stronger, more vibrant legacy to leave to your kids than the heritage you received; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s no doubt about it. You guys have demonstrated that here, as we\u2019ve kind of pried open your family and allowed your daughters to tell us what kind of home they grew up in. And I want to turn to the pastor of Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills and say: \u201cOkay, pastor. If you\u2019ll just allow the power of God to come into your life\u2014this is what I want to leave you with\u2014that the greatest setbacks that you can enumerate in your life\u2014the things that you might hang onto, and the things that you might even <em>justify<\/em> your bad attitude or your position on\u2014is the very thing that, if you give to Him, He makes the strongest stepping stones out of those things. They literally become your victory if you let Him have them. They\u2019ll either pull you down to the pit or, if you give them to Him, He\u2019ll use them to raise you up. God is our Redeemer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I love redemption stories.
