We\u2019re getting a chance this week to look inside a Christian marriage\u2014a Christian family\u2014and see: \u201cHow can we have the right focus \/ the right direction for where we\u2019re headed? How can we be a little more\u2014to use a word you like to use\u2014intentional about the purpose that God has established for us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think everybody, who is listening to our broadcast, wants to leave a strong spiritual legacy to the next generation. The question is: \u201cHow do you do it?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a couple with us that are going to encourage you in that process and, I think, equip you to leave a legacy that honors God. Jack and Lisa Hibbs join us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jack, Lisa, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Thanks for having us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They\u2019ve written a book that\u2019s, frankly, their story, called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Jack, you\u2019re a pastor. You preach to thousands of people. You shared, earlier this week, how you had a stuttering problem growing up and were distant from your dad. I think all of that led you to come to a conclusion\u2014that you write about it in your book\u2014that how we were raised manifests itself in how we act, react, and demonstrate love in relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, absolutely. We are handed\u2014if we like it or not\u2014we are handed the tools that we\u2019re going to carry into various relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You call it a heritage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that we\u2019re given. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>The heritage, yes; absolutely. That heritage makes up what we all draw from. Initially\u2014most importantly\u2014we would say, in the book, that it is our perception and understanding of how we relate to God; but where does that come from?\u00a0 It comes from our exposure to our parents. It comes through how we form our thoughts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe look at, for example, the father figure in our homes or in America today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see a disjointed family description. We see a broken home in some cases. Or if the home is not broken, so to speak, there is an absent father. He may be there; but his emotions or his spiritual leadership is, frankly, not there. All of that, or the lack thereof, poured into my life. It\u2019s something that I think that, without God inserting His love and His grace into my life, I\u2019m afraid to think where I would have wound up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>So, God in His grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When did you first really come to grips with the fact that: \u201cSome of these bags I brought into this marriage are going to impact me, as a wife?\u201d\u2014or maybe, it was after you became a mom; Lisa?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, I think it hit mostly after I became a mom, which was the ripe old age of 22. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, you know, very quickly because I left my past saying: \u201cI\u2019m doing things so differently. I\u2019m going to be the best mom in the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not going to do that.\u201d\u00a0 But we don\u2019t know what the plan is\u2014we just know: \u201cWe don\u2019t want to do <em>that<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn some respects, too, we want to leave a stronger spiritual legacy\u2014which I did leave my home with a strong spiritual sense\u2014<em>but<\/em> we both were damaged as far as the emotional goes. I suffered that childhood trauma of losing my mother as a little girl\u2014was difficult and bred a lot of insecurity when my stepmother came. I never felt she loved me. I thought she was very harsh, and it was difficult growing up\u2014but not getting that real love from my dad\u2014that strong bond with him. I think, if it hadn\u2019t been for my siblings, I would have been a basket case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about the three heritages\u2014and this is really at the center of the message of your book, Jack\u2014the spiritual heritage we receive, the emotional heritage we receive, and the social heritage we receive\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those three wrap together to influence the person we are in our adult years; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, there is no doubt about it. Scripture lays that foundation\u2014that plan\u2014for us because, as the Scripture declares, that a three-strand cord is not easily broken. When you begin to look at the reality of that\u20141 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us that we have been created by God\u2014body, soul, and spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat ultimate manifestation in public is our social interaction\u2014be it your job, be it your marriage, be it who you are in public \/ in church\u2014but <em>where<\/em> does that come from?\u00a0 I think this is so key where how many people are struggling today. They know what the Word says, but they don\u2019t have the tools or the encouragement to fix things. They go to church on Sunday and they\u2019re thinking: \u201cWell, I go for an hour a week. Why aren\u2019t I different?\u201d\u00a0 Then, there is that sense of defeat: \u201cWell, gosh, I know who God is; but why do I have no power?\u00a0 Why is there no change?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m faithful to go to church on Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, the reason is we need to\u2014and that is what the book is about\u2014we need to address the past\u2014wrap it up in the power of the Word of God, knowing that God is for us. He\u2019s got a great plan to turn that around and to strengthen that three-cord assembly of who we really are. God\u2014look, He\u2019s the Redeemer. He\u2019s awesome. He does it, and He\u2019ll never stop doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>When we talk about how our past influences who we are as adults, do we start to drift into Oprah-land, you know?\u2014I mean, there is a little bit of the kind of \u201cI am powerless to be any different than I am because of the past that I received.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014if that were true, I would have to surrender the pulpit ministry that I have. I would have to seriously doubt the validity of my Christianity because God\u2019s Word has proven to me its power to change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can do a lot of things in life, and we can give a pep talk, and we can pat somebody on the back\u2014and that is great\u2014but ultimately, that is key for me. If I lose that power that is in His Word\u2014because I\u2019ve seen it happen in our lives and the lives of others now that we\u2019ve seen over the 25 years of serving the Lord in this capacity\u2014I\u2019d quit!\u00a0 I\u2019d give that up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Think about the Apostle Paul who came to Christ with a background of murder. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He\u2019d been involved in persecuting and assisting with the murder of Christians. Now, God has called him to minister to them. It would have been easy for Paul to say: \u201cI can\u2019t do that. I was so scarred by what I grew up with\u201d; but he says, \u201cForgetting what lies behind, I press on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is a sense in which we can\u2019t forget what lies behind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but we can\u2019t be controlled by it either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. That\u2019s the whole point\u2014is to take what God\u2019s promised in His power, and to conquer, and to actually glean. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we talk about Ruth going through the fields of Boaz. She gleaned what was there. You can glean from your past; but see, without the proper glasses on, so to speak, you look back at your past and you\u2019ll get defeated. Nobody wants to be there, but you\u2019ve got to address it, in the authority of God\u2019s Word, to go forward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right; you need to be able to look at the good and the bad. That\u2019s, hopefully, what the book\u2014would help people to be able to kind of evaluate themselves to see what was good and what was bad because\u2014even in my own life, from experience\u2014I can say that I was going to throw the baby out with the bath water. I was going to let go of all of it because I was going to do something so different. The pendulum was swinging so far the other way that it wasn\u2019t healthy either. So, we need to look at it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took us several years, really, to finally understand that and be able to look back at the past and say: \u201cOkay, that wasn\u2019t right; but this was really great!\u00a0 I need to hang on to that; discard that.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s an important part\u2014aspect\u2014of developing and leaving a stronger legacy than what you were given. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to ask both of you to do something here. I want you <em>both<\/em> to give me five words that describe the emotional heritage you were given from your families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, dear. I\u2019ll start. Five words: absent, combative\u2014it was critical\u2014it was doubting\u2014and finally, I would say hopeless. They didn\u2019t know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>They were only giving me what they had, and it left me vacant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You shared, earlier, that your dad received Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and then, died seven days later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, he was on his deathbed as he came to faith in Christ. What about you, Lisa?\u00a0 What five words would you say best describes your emotional heritage you were given?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>He mentioned, \u201ccritical,\u201d that would definitely be one\u2014insecure, definitely; fearful; doubting; distant, maybe\u2014you know hurtful things. And yet, once again, I\u2014when I first had kids, I was listening to James Dobson a lot\u2014you know, I got plugged into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Weren\u2019t we all?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes; and my stepmother said: \u201cWow! If only I would have had something like that.\u201d There weren\u2019t the books and all of the support that happens <em>now<\/em>. So, she has apologized for some of those things that were hard; but I know, being a mom, that taking on seven step kids was an incredible commitment on her part. I don\u2019t know how she did it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say, in the book, that what we want to do, as parents, in leaving a legacy to our children\u2014a healthy emotional legacy\u2014we want to leave them with an enduring sense of security and stability, nurtured in an environment of safety and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>If kids grow up in a safe, secure, loving environment, that gives them an asset they can draw on for the rest of their lives; doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, amen. In all areas of life, it\u2019s going to be better for them. I\u2019m a real lover of American history. I love the creation of this nation\u2014the spirit of all of that. So, I\u2019ve looked into that a lot. When I look at where the nation is today\u2014how it\u2019s gotten here, and what\u2019s possible\u2014so, \u201cWhy has there been a disconnect?\u201d I believe\u2014and I can say this, as a father\u2014you\u2019re leaving your child \/ your children something. When we look at America today, we look at, really, a fatherless nation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And we see men today who have been beaten down by the sexual revolution or whatever it might be\u2014women\u2019s liberation, whatever. They\u2019ve been boxed into a corner. On top of that, there has been an absence of the father\u2014and again, I don\u2019t mean he\u2019s not at home. He\u2019s just not pouring into that son\u2019s life, for example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hear from young women today: \u201cWhere are the men?\u00a0 Where are the Christian men?\u00a0 I want a man to take the initiative.\u201d\u00a0 And there are probably young men out there today saying: \u201cI want to take the initiative. I just don\u2019t know how to start.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I think that there is a revival possible only through the family. I think it\u2019s going to come through dads. I mean, I know this sounds almost self-serving, in a way; but I believe that God has given the dad\u2014the husband\u2014a God-given authority that will result, ultimately, in the turning around of this nation if we so choose to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s one of the reasons that Dennis wrote a book called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014to call men to exactly what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we developed a video series, for guys, based on that\u2014that\u2019s designed to help equip the guy, who is saying, \u201cI know there is something inside of me that says, \u2018I should do this. I should be this.\u2019\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cwhat to do.\u201d\u00a0 If you can give him the right\u2014if you can point him in the right direction, guys will respond to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Men need other men in their lives\u2014older men \/ more mature men\u2014men who will call them up\u2014call them to step up. And Jack, you lead a church of several thousand people. You\u2019ve got to see this, left and right, among singles \/ marrieds\u2014older men who are, ultimately, getting lost in the midst of this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And men need to be called to assume the responsibility that only they can fulfill. There is a difference between men and women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>There is a difference. I believe what you\u2019re saying is exactly true\u2014and Bob, you said, as well, a moment ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think men are recognizing\u2014if they haven\u2019t already\u2014they\u2019ve got it down: \u201cThere is a big void in my life. I need to step up. I need to do something about this.\u201d\u00a0 And if we give them the tools\u2014which, as we go through the book, there are some self-evaluation courses\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014if you\u2019re honest\u2014nobody else has to see it\u2014just you look at that. Answer those questions that are there, and you\u2019ll see what you need to work on in your own life. I think men, if they are given tools that are clear and simple\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014they\u2019re going to act. They are going to do it. I think God has put that in a man to do. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious, Lisa: \u201cDo you think that the guys are the ones who need to step up? If they would, women would respond and that would turn things?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. I counsel a lot of women. They are looking for that. A lot of the women want that, but they don\u2019t\u2014a lot of men don\u2019t know what to do. They have <em>no idea<\/em>. They didn\u2019t have the mentor. They didn\u2019t have a good father in their lives. So, they are kind of lost; you know?\u00a0 They hear the \u201cspiritual leader\u201d words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those two words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014and it kind of freaks them out. They think they are supposed to be preaching to their family and their wife. They don\u2019t understand what it means. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHopefully, in this book, too, we\u2019ve kind of spelled it out\u2014what it means to <em>live it<\/em>\u2014live it every day\u2014be a Christian, not just out at church \/ not just serving on Sunday\u2014you know, with your hands raised and looking really good for everybody to see\u2014but in your home, being a Christian role model to your wife\u2014to your children. And they\u2019ll get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, let me ask you about that because when Mary Ann and I first started dating, I was asking her about a guy she had dated previously. I said, \u201cWhy did you break up?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cWell, he just did not lead the relationship, spiritually.\u201d\u00a0 I nodded my head\u2014and just like you, Jack, I kind of went, \u201cHmm.\u201d I was thinking to myself, \u201cI have no idea what that means;\u201d\u2014\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cbut I better figure it out, or I\u2019m going to be dumped just like the last guy was.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I set out to try to clumsily do whatever I could do to show I was leading the relationship, spiritually. You talk about how important it is for us to leave a spiritual legacy\u2014not just an emotional legacy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but a spiritual legacy. So, if that <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> mean that I\u2019m supposed to preach to my kids and my wife, Jack, what does it mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad you asked that because so many guys, that we\u2019ve seen over the years, when they get excited: \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got to lead my family,\u201d\u2014the first thought they have is: \u201cWell, you know, the pastor teaches for an hour on Sunday. I guess I\u2019m going to take my five-year-old through a sermon.\u201d\u00a0 That would kill that poor kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We\u2019re really big promoters of what we write in the book about\u2014and this is just something that is important to us. It may sound crazy to some people; but years ago, we heard of a world-renowned scientist at our church come and speak to us. He said, \u201cGod has written two Bibles.\u201d\u00a0 And when I heard that, I got a little defensive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A little squirmy; yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>He said, \u201cBecause God is the author of science\u2014true science. He\u2019s the author of the Bible\u2014He\u2019s the author of science.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou can read the Bible; or you can be somebody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cdown in the jungles of South America\u2014and never have a Bible and look around at creation. It announces the Creator\/Designer God.\u201d\u00a0 We took that very seriously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we began to introduce, from the earliest days of our children\u2014was to teach our kids about God by going out to the park, going to the backyard, lifting up a rock, looking at bugs crawling underneath\u2014telling them: \u201cGod did this. Look, why do you think God made this little bug to where when you poke him, he rolls in a ball?\u201d\u00a0 Why would we bring it to our children that way?\u2014because that\u2019s how they think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tButterflies\u2014we talk about that because it\u2019s something in Southern California we see: \u201cWhy did God do that?\u201d\u00a0 Get them excited to realize that learning about God is really cool!\u00a0 It\u2019s really fun!\u00a0 It\u2019s extremely practical, and I\u2019m learning. I want to teach my kids about God\u2014regarding the movement of how God takes water up, moves it in a cloud, and drops it in the valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are going to see that; and they are going to realize, \u201cYou know, that\u2019s the God that my dad is telling me about,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014rather than trying to give them an expositional study on Romans, Chapter 2, at a young age. Every dad can do this. Every mom can do this: \u201cLook\u2014look, what God did!\u00a0 He made your dog to sweat through his little paws, and He made his nose wet. Why do you think that happened?\u201d\u00a0 Then, you find out. You get in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You \u201cGoogle<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And you realize: \u201cMy God is the Designer. If He can make this duck fly and swim like that, then, I think He can handle the problems of my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had a guest, not long ago, who said that when her daughter got older, she came back to her mom and said: \u201cI remember when I was little that I would wake up and I\u2019d see you on the sofa, reading your Bible. I just come and sit by you, as you were reading your Bible,\u201d\u2014didn\u2019t say anything\u2014but she said, \u201cI knew God was real because how I saw <em>you<\/em> engaging with Him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Wonderful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our model\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014our spiritual model is <em>huge<\/em>. In fact, it may be bigger than anything we ever say to our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I think so too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Agreed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Years ago, I was in our living room. We had a small group, really, from which we started a church, here in Little Rock; but there were some couples there, and we started talking about where we got our first picture of who God was and what His character was like. It was fascinating\u2014the conversation\u2014as everybody shared the answer to that question\u2014all gravitated back to Daddy\u2014the Daddy model\u2014what a father\u2019s love looked like\u2014a relationship, the pursuit, the presence\u2014and I\u2019m not talking about gifts. I\u2019m talking about being there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And was he in their lives?\u00a0 If they had that experience, their concept of God was quite different than those who described their fathers as absent. They had to relearn, from the Bible, what God really is like\u2014and that, maybe, they had a negative image.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say this\u2014not to pile on to dads, at this point\u2014but to just exhort both dads and moms: \u201cYou two have one of the most glorious assignments in all of the universe. You\u2019ve been given the assignment of imprinting the image of God on the soul of a child.\u201d\u00a0 And we dare not miss the hand-off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to assume that responsibility\u2014with all of our deficits, all of our flaws, all of our selfishness, all of our mistakes. When we yell at each other and we blow it, we\u2019ve got to get down on a knee and confess to our kids: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Mommy and Daddy may not do it perfectly, but we\u2019re not quitting. We will represent who God is and what He is like to you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I think to have wise counselors, like Jack and Lisa Hibbs, available to mentor you, as you go through this process of making that spiritual hand-off to your children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think that\u2019s a <em>great asset<\/em>. How can we be a little more\u2014to use a word you like to use\u2014intentional about the purpose that God has established for us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think everybody, who is listening to our broadcast, wants to leave a strong spiritual legacy to the next generation. The question is: \u201cHow do you do it?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a couple with us that are going to encourage you in that process and, I think, equip you to leave a legacy that honors God. Jack and Lisa Hibbs join us, again, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Jack, Lisa, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Thanks for having us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Thank you. It\u2019s great to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They\u2019ve written a book that\u2019s, frankly, their story, called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Jack, you\u2019re a pastor. You preach to thousands of people. You shared, earlier this week, how you had a stuttering problem growing up and were distant from your dad. I think all of that led you to come to a conclusion\u2014that you write about it in your book\u2014that how we were raised manifests itself in how we act, react, and demonstrate love in relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, absolutely. We are handed\u2014if we like it or not\u2014we are handed the tools that we\u2019re going to carry into various relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You call it a heritage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that we\u2019re given. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>The heritage, yes; absolutely. That heritage makes up what we all draw from. Initially\u2014most importantly\u2014we would say, in the book, that it is our perception and understanding of how we relate to God; but where does that come from?\u00a0 It comes from our exposure to our parents. It comes through how we form our thoughts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe look at, for example, the father figure in our homes or in America today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see a disjointed family description. We see a broken home in some cases. Or if the home is not broken, so to speak, there is an absent father. He may be there; but his emotions or his spiritual leadership is, frankly, not there. All of that, or the lack thereof, poured into my life. It\u2019s something that I think that, without God inserting His love and His grace into my life, I\u2019m afraid to think where I would have wound up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>So, God in His grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When did you first really come to grips with the fact that: \u201cSome of these bags I brought into this marriage are going to impact me, as a wife?\u201d\u2014or maybe, it was after you became a mom; Lisa?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, I think it hit mostly after I became a mom, which was the ripe old age of 22. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, you know, very quickly because I left my past saying: \u201cI\u2019m doing things so differently. I\u2019m going to be the best mom in the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not going to do that.\u201d\u00a0 But we don\u2019t know what the plan is\u2014we just know: \u201cWe don\u2019t want to do <em>that<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn some respects, too, we want to leave a stronger spiritual legacy\u2014which I did leave my home with a strong spiritual sense\u2014<em>but<\/em> we both were damaged as far as the emotional goes. I suffered that childhood trauma of losing my mother as a little girl\u2014was difficult and bred a lot of insecurity when my stepmother came. I never felt she loved me. I thought she was very harsh, and it was difficult growing up\u2014but not getting that real love from my dad\u2014that strong bond with him. I think, if it hadn\u2019t been for my siblings, I would have been a basket case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You talk about the three heritages\u2014and this is really at the center of the message of your book, Jack\u2014the spiritual heritage we receive, the emotional heritage we receive, and the social heritage we receive\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those three wrap together to influence the person we are in our adult years; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, there is no doubt about it. Scripture lays that foundation\u2014that plan\u2014for us because, as the Scripture declares, that a three-strand cord is not easily broken. When you begin to look at the reality of that\u20141 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us that we have been created by God\u2014body, soul, and spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat ultimate manifestation in public is our social interaction\u2014be it your job, be it your marriage, be it who you are in public \/ in church\u2014but <em>where<\/em> does that come from?\u00a0 I think this is so key where how many people are struggling today. They know what the Word says, but they don\u2019t have the tools or the encouragement to fix things. They go to church on Sunday and they\u2019re thinking: \u201cWell, I go for an hour a week. Why aren\u2019t I different?\u201d\u00a0 Then, there is that sense of defeat: \u201cWell, gosh, I know who God is; but why do I have no power?\u00a0 Why is there no change?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m faithful to go to church on Sunday.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, the reason is we need to\u2014and that is what the book is about\u2014we need to address the past\u2014wrap it up in the power of the Word of God, knowing that God is for us. He\u2019s got a great plan to turn that around and to strengthen that three-cord assembly of who we really are. God\u2014look, He\u2019s the Redeemer. He\u2019s awesome. He does it, and He\u2019ll never stop doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>When we talk about how our past influences who we are as adults, do we start to drift into Oprah-land, you know?\u2014I mean, there is a little bit of the kind of \u201cI am powerless to be any different than I am because of the past that I received.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014if that were true, I would have to surrender the pulpit ministry that I have. I would have to seriously doubt the validity of my Christianity because God\u2019s Word has proven to me its power to change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can do a lot of things in life, and we can give a pep talk, and we can pat somebody on the back\u2014and that is great\u2014but ultimately, that is key for me. If I lose that power that is in His Word\u2014because I\u2019ve seen it happen in our lives and the lives of others now that we\u2019ve seen over the 25 years of serving the Lord in this capacity\u2014I\u2019d quit!\u00a0 I\u2019d give that up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Think about the Apostle Paul who came to Christ with a background of murder. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He\u2019d been involved in persecuting and assisting with the murder of Christians. Now, God has called him to minister to them. It would have been easy for Paul to say: \u201cI can\u2019t do that. I was so scarred by what I grew up with\u201d; but he says, \u201cForgetting what lies behind, I press on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is a sense in which we can\u2019t forget what lies behind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but we can\u2019t be controlled by it either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. That\u2019s the whole point\u2014is to take what God\u2019s promised in His power, and to conquer, and to actually glean. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we talk about Ruth going through the fields of Boaz. She gleaned what was there. You can glean from your past; but see, without the proper glasses on, so to speak, you look back at your past and you\u2019ll get defeated. Nobody wants to be there, but you\u2019ve got to address it, in the authority of God\u2019s Word, to go forward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right; you need to be able to look at the good and the bad. That\u2019s, hopefully, what the book\u2014would help people to be able to kind of evaluate themselves to see what was good and what was bad because\u2014even in my own life, from experience\u2014I can say that I was going to throw the baby out with the bath water. I was going to let go of all of it because I was going to do something so different. The pendulum was swinging so far the other way that it wasn\u2019t healthy either. So, we need to look at it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt took us several years, really, to finally understand that and be able to look back at the past and say: \u201cOkay, that wasn\u2019t right; but this was really great!\u00a0 I need to hang on to that; discard that.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s an important part\u2014aspect\u2014of developing and leaving a stronger legacy than what you were given. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to ask both of you to do something here. I want you <em>both<\/em> to give me five words that describe the emotional heritage you were given from your families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, dear. I\u2019ll start. Five words: absent, combative\u2014it was critical\u2014it was doubting\u2014and finally, I would say hopeless. They didn\u2019t know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>They were only giving me what they had, and it left me vacant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You shared, earlier, that your dad received Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and then, died seven days later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, he was on his deathbed as he came to faith in Christ. What about you, Lisa?\u00a0 What five words would you say best describes your emotional heritage you were given?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>He mentioned, \u201ccritical,\u201d that would definitely be one\u2014insecure, definitely; fearful; doubting; distant, maybe\u2014you know hurtful things. And yet, once again, I\u2014when I first had kids, I was listening to James Dobson a lot\u2014you know, I got plugged into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Weren\u2019t we all?\u00a0 Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes; and my stepmother said: \u201cWow! If only I would have had something like that.\u201d There weren\u2019t the books and all of the support that happens <em>now<\/em>. So, she has apologized for some of those things that were hard; but I know, being a mom, that taking on seven step kids was an incredible commitment on her part. I don\u2019t know how she did it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You say, in the book, that what we want to do, as parents, in leaving a legacy to our children\u2014a healthy emotional legacy\u2014we want to leave them with an enduring sense of security and stability, nurtured in an environment of safety and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>If kids grow up in a safe, secure, loving environment, that gives them an asset they can draw on for the rest of their lives; doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, amen. In all areas of life, it\u2019s going to be better for them. I\u2019m a real lover of American history. I love the creation of this nation\u2014the spirit of all of that. So, I\u2019ve looked into that a lot. When I look at where the nation is today\u2014how it\u2019s gotten here, and what\u2019s possible\u2014so, \u201cWhy has there been a disconnect?\u201d I believe\u2014and I can say this, as a father\u2014you\u2019re leaving your child \/ your children something. When we look at America today, we look at, really, a fatherless nation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And we see men today who have been beaten down by the sexual revolution or whatever it might be\u2014women\u2019s liberation, whatever. They\u2019ve been boxed into a corner. On top of that, there has been an absence of the father\u2014and again, I don\u2019t mean he\u2019s not at home. He\u2019s just not pouring into that son\u2019s life, for example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hear from young women today: \u201cWhere are the men?\u00a0 Where are the Christian men?\u00a0 I want a man to take the initiative.\u201d\u00a0 And there are probably young men out there today saying: \u201cI want to take the initiative. I just don\u2019t know how to start.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I think that there is a revival possible only through the family. I think it\u2019s going to come through dads. I mean, I know this sounds almost self-serving, in a way; but I believe that God has given the dad\u2014the husband\u2014a God-given authority that will result, ultimately, in the turning around of this nation if we so choose to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s one of the reasons that Dennis wrote a book called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014to call men to exactly what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we developed a video series, for guys, based on that\u2014that\u2019s designed to help equip the guy, who is saying, \u201cI know there is something inside of me that says, \u2018I should do this. I should be this.\u2019\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cwhat to do.\u201d\u00a0 If you can give him the right\u2014if you can point him in the right direction, guys will respond to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Men need other men in their lives\u2014older men \/ more mature men\u2014men who will call them up\u2014call them to step up. And Jack, you lead a church of several thousand people. You\u2019ve got to see this, left and right, among singles \/ marrieds\u2014older men who are, ultimately, getting lost in the midst of this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And men need to be called to assume the responsibility that only they can fulfill. There is a difference between men and women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>There is a difference. I believe what you\u2019re saying is exactly true\u2014and Bob, you said, as well, a moment ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think men are recognizing\u2014if they haven\u2019t already\u2014they\u2019ve got it down: \u201cThere is a big void in my life. I need to step up. I need to do something about this.\u201d\u00a0 And if we give them the tools\u2014which, as we go through the book, there are some self-evaluation courses\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014if you\u2019re honest\u2014nobody else has to see it\u2014just you look at that. Answer those questions that are there, and you\u2019ll see what you need to work on in your own life. I think men, if they are given tools that are clear and simple\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014they\u2019re going to act. They are going to do it. I think God has put that in a man to do. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious, Lisa: \u201cDo you think that the guys are the ones who need to step up? If they would, women would respond and that would turn things?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. I counsel a lot of women. They are looking for that. A lot of the women want that, but they don\u2019t\u2014a lot of men don\u2019t know what to do. They have <em>no idea<\/em>. They didn\u2019t have the mentor. They didn\u2019t have a good father in their lives. So, they are kind of lost; you know?\u00a0 They hear the \u201cspiritual leader\u201d words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014those two words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>\u2014and it kind of freaks them out. They think they are supposed to be preaching to their family and their wife. They don\u2019t understand what it means. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHopefully, in this book, too, we\u2019ve kind of spelled it out\u2014what it means to <em>live it<\/em>\u2014live it every day\u2014be a Christian, not just out at church \/ not just serving on Sunday\u2014you know, with your hands raised and looking really good for everybody to see\u2014but in your home, being a Christian role model to your wife\u2014to your children. And they\u2019ll get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, let me ask you about that because when Mary Ann and I first started dating, I was asking her about a guy she had dated previously. I said, \u201cWhy did you break up?\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cWell, he just did not lead the relationship, spiritually.\u201d\u00a0 I nodded my head\u2014and just like you, Jack, I kind of went, \u201cHmm.\u201d I was thinking to myself, \u201cI have no idea what that means;\u201d\u2014\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cbut I better figure it out, or I\u2019m going to be dumped just like the last guy was.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I set out to try to clumsily do whatever I could do to show I was leading the relationship, spiritually. You talk about how important it is for us to leave a spiritual legacy\u2014not just an emotional legacy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but a spiritual legacy. So, if that <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> mean that I\u2019m supposed to preach to my kids and my wife, Jack, what does it mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad you asked that because so many guys, that we\u2019ve seen over the years, when they get excited: \u201cOkay, I\u2019ve got to lead my family,\u201d\u2014the first thought they have is: \u201cWell, you know, the pastor teaches for an hour on Sunday. I guess I\u2019m going to take my five-year-old through a sermon.\u201d\u00a0 That would kill that poor kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We\u2019re really big promoters of what we write in the book about\u2014and this is just something that is important to us. It may sound crazy to some people; but years ago, we heard of a world-renowned scientist at our church come and speak to us. He said, \u201cGod has written two Bibles.\u201d\u00a0 And when I heard that, I got a little defensive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A little squirmy; yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>He said, \u201cBecause God is the author of science\u2014true science. He\u2019s the author of the Bible\u2014He\u2019s the author of science.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou can read the Bible; or you can be somebody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cdown in the jungles of South America\u2014and never have a Bible and look around at creation. It announces the Creator\/Designer God.\u201d\u00a0 We took that very seriously. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we began to introduce, from the earliest days of our children\u2014was to teach our kids about God by going out to the park, going to the backyard, lifting up a rock, looking at bugs crawling underneath\u2014telling them: \u201cGod did this. Look, why do you think God made this little bug to where when you poke him, he rolls in a ball?\u201d\u00a0 Why would we bring it to our children that way?\u2014because that\u2019s how they think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tButterflies\u2014we talk about that because it\u2019s something in Southern California we see: \u201cWhy did God do that?\u201d\u00a0 Get them excited to realize that learning about God is really cool!\u00a0 It\u2019s really fun!\u00a0 It\u2019s extremely practical, and I\u2019m learning. I want to teach my kids about God\u2014regarding the movement of how God takes water up, moves it in a cloud, and drops it in the valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are going to see that; and they are going to realize, \u201cYou know, that\u2019s the God that my dad is telling me about,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014rather than trying to give them an expositional study on Romans, Chapter 2, at a young age. Every dad can do this. Every mom can do this: \u201cLook\u2014look, what God did!\u00a0 He made your dog to sweat through his little paws, and He made his nose wet. Why do you think that happened?\u201d\u00a0 Then, you find out. You get in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You \u201cGoogle<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And you realize: \u201cMy God is the Designer. If He can make this duck fly and swim like that, then, I think He can handle the problems of my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had a guest, not long ago, who said that when her daughter got older, she came back to her mom and said: \u201cI remember when I was little that I would wake up and I\u2019d see you on the sofa, reading your Bible. I just come and sit by you, as you were reading your Bible,\u201d\u2014didn\u2019t say anything\u2014but she said, \u201cI knew God was real because how I saw <em>you<\/em> engaging with Him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Wonderful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our model\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014our spiritual model is <em>huge<\/em>. In fact, it may be bigger than anything we ever say to our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I think so too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Agreed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Years ago, I was in our living room. We had a small group, really, from which we started a church, here in Little Rock; but there were some couples there, and we started talking about where we got our first picture of who God was and what His character was like. It was fascinating\u2014the conversation\u2014as everybody shared the answer to that question\u2014all gravitated back to Daddy\u2014the Daddy model\u2014what a father\u2019s love looked like\u2014a relationship, the pursuit, the presence\u2014and I\u2019m not talking about gifts. I\u2019m talking about being there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And was he in their lives?\u00a0 If they had that experience, their concept of God was quite different than those who described their fathers as absent. They had to relearn, from the Bible, what God really is like\u2014and that, maybe, they had a negative image.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say this\u2014not to pile on to dads, at this point\u2014but to just exhort both dads and moms: \u201cYou two have one of the most glorious assignments in all of the universe. You\u2019ve been given the assignment of imprinting the image of God on the soul of a child.\u201d\u00a0 And we dare not miss the hand-off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to assume that responsibility\u2014with all of our deficits, all of our flaws, all of our selfishness, all of our mistakes. When we yell at each other and we blow it, we\u2019ve got to get down on a knee and confess to our kids: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Mommy and Daddy may not do it perfectly, but we\u2019re not quitting. We will represent who God is and what He is like to you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I think to have wise counselors, like Jack and Lisa Hibbs, available to mentor you, as you go through this process of making that spiritual hand-off to your children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think that\u2019s a <em>great asset<\/em>.
