Here\u2019s Pastor Jack Hibbs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s the right word\u2014fumbled around\u2014because how many of us have experienced this?\u2014where you were brought up in whatever environment, and you decide: \u201cI am <em>not<\/em> going to be like my mom,\u201d or, \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my dad in that area of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you embark upon a marriage\u2014you embark upon your children. Even though you\u2019ve made that oath, with yourself and with the heavens, you\u2019re not going to say or do that thing; and then, lo and behold, that very attitude is formed in you. And you said you would never be like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, May 21<sup>st<\/sup>. We\u2019ll talk to Pastor Jack Hibbs and his wife Lisa today about that. If we don\u2019t have that right, our human relationships aren\u2019t going to be right. Second core message is our marriage relationship\u2014the strength and stability \/ the covenant nature of the marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third banner talks about the unique assignment that God has given to men, as husbands, and the unique assignment God has given to women, as wives. We believe those are spelled out clearly in Scripture. And then the fourth banner is the banner that talks about our responsibility to pass on a legacy of spiritual vitality to the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking about those banners as I was thinking about our guests today because I thought, \u201cThey would \u2018Amen,\u2019 on each one of those, I think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our guests were both given a different type of heritage, and they are in the process of leaving a different legacy. Jack and Lisa Hibbs join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Lisa, Jack, welcome to Little Rock!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s a far cry from Southern California, but we are delighted to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. We are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you\u2019re here\u2014glad you\u2019re here. Jack and Lisa founded Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills, in Southern California. How many years ago did you start that church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, we started as a home Bible study in 1990 with six of us, and the Lord\u2019s blessed! We have more than six now. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Somewhere between nine or ten thousand adults attending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How many children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>A lot of kids\u2014lot of kids. I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And marriage and family\u2019s been a big part of what the church\u2019s purpose is; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s a big part. It\u2019s increasing because what we see\u2014the age of those attending\u2014we\u2019re very encouraged because there\u2019re young families\u2014lots of kids. Because of that, yes, we have focused hard on family. It\u2019s something that we see vital to, of course, Christianity and beyond\u2014even our nation\u2014we need stronger families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did I hear right that you guys have utilized <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series\u2014that we put together\u2014at your church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We absolutely have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, and tell us what the response has been to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Every response that we have is a gathering that is packed out and sold out\u2014not that we sell tickets\u2014but I mean packed out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All six people came, then? They all came. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s just a great success\u2014which just, again, adds to the vision of strengthening the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and a church needs to be doing that. I applaud you, as a pastor, helping to give leadership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou two have been married more than 30 years. You have two daughters, who are married \/ two grandchildren. You\u2019ve crafted a book together\u2014your first book\u2014that\u2019s called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the whole concept of a turnaround. Now that I\u2019ve been through your book\u2014makes a lot of sense because, starting with you, Jack\u2014as a boy, you stuttered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, severe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your home should have been a place that protected you, but it wasn\u2019t. Take us there and explain what kind of family you came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>You know, it was the exact opposite of what you just articulated. My story starts out in the book with something that I had a chance to overhear. It was an afternoon\u2014it was in between both school and football practice. I\u2019d gone home to catch a lunch and then head back to school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom had no idea that I was in the room next door. She had a neighbor over. She was telling the neighbor that this process of her life\u2014when she had moved from Hawaii with my dad to San Diego\u2014she\u2019d become pregnant. That was not part of the plan. I had an older brother and an older sister, and that was it for my dad. She was pregnant, terrified, and scared. Eventually, my dad found out about that\u2014was very upset with that\u2014moved. My dad moved to Alaska. My mom and her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait; wait. He moved to Alaska in the middle of her pregnancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Very early on in the pregnancy. He was very upset about that\u2014wound up getting a job in Alaska.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, he is so angry about you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014so angry. My mom\u2014very alone and scared\u2014on December 24<sup>th<\/sup>, Christmas Eve, 1957, she attempted an abortion. It failed. She was found\u2014taken to the hospital\u2014where she and I stayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was born on January 15<sup>th<\/sup>. But from that time on\u2014my dad came back home when I was about nine months old\u2014but for that whole period of time, growing up\u2014just not welcomed in the family\u2014just didn\u2019t feel part of that. My dad, again\u2014what the book\u2019s about\u2014he grew up in a home that was not all that loving. It\u2019s just his way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He signed up for the military and even had to lie about his age; you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, he did that. Listen, I don\u2019t want to throw my dad under the bus because, again, he was acting upon the tools that he had growing up\u2014but, making a long story short\u2014just never connected with my dad\u2014never quite had the opportunity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real turning point for me was probably about the age of nine. He had discovered, \u201cI have to get this kid, Jack, plugged into something meaningful,\u201d\u2014put me in his truck\u2014which was a delight. I couldn\u2019t believe it\u2014drove me down to the local\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, wait a second. You couldn\u2019t believe he put you in his truck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes; because I did not have access to my dad, growing up. It was a very, very cold\u2014very harsh response toward me\u2014in anything and in everything. On top of the fact\u2014and I explain this in the book\u2014I stuttered really badly. So again, in his way, he\u2019d put his hands on his hips\u2014that\u2019s the picture I have of my dad, growing up. He\u2019d have his hands on his hips\u2014he would be looking at me. My dad was an ex-Marine. He would just say, \u201cSpit it out!\u201d You know: \u201cWhat are you trying to say?! What\u2019s wrong with you?!\u201d\u2014which is not good therapy for a kid\u2019s stuttering. I just learned how to tuck everything in \/ hide. Really, what it wound up resulting in\u2014was a very isolated childhood \/ very rejected\u2014but it spawned within me a lot of violence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were starting to tell us about a landmark moment when your dad took you off to sign you up for football. You were what?\u2014nine years old, at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Nine years old\u2014never forget it. It was unique because my dad specifically said: \u201cGet in the truck. We\u2019re going to go down to the park.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat had never happened before. I thought, \u201cOh, my goodness\u2014the heavens have parted,\u201d you know. I don\u2019t know what his motives were, but I thank God for them because he signed me up for the local contact football team\u2014for Junior All-American Football. It was the first time in my life that I thought I had some sort of a connection with a father-figure\u2014with my dad\u2014because every boy\u2014we talk about this in the book\u2014every <em>child<\/em> longs for a relationship with the father, but so much more the boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s what I thought would be a turning point for us. It didn\u2019t exactly work out that way, but the real redeeming moment was a phone call I got from my dad. He said: \u201cJackson, I went to the doctor today. I have a short time to live. Can you tell me about Jesus again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And you know, when you have the opportunity to lead somebody to Christ\u2014that\u2019s a relative, let alone your father \/ let alone a man that you never had much of a connection with\u2014I wanted him to get into heaven so badly that I started giving him the gospel in Genesis. Really! We were on the phone for a good two hours. He was silent. He listened to the whole thing. He accepted the Lord on the phone; and seven days later, my dad had passed. But it was absolutely remarkable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, again, that\u2019s part of the spirit of <em>Turnaround<\/em>. Our God is a God that turns things around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>He\u2019s done it in our lives\u2014He\u2019s done for us both, Lisa and I; He\u2019s done it for both of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And He continues to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He really has. Lisa, you had your own turnaround, as well; except, yours is a bit different. You say you grew up in two very distinctly different Christian families. Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, the first one\u2014I was very young. I don\u2019t have a great recollection of it because my mother died when I was five. I was the baby of seven kids. From what I understand from my older siblings, I was tied to my mother\u2019s apron strings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a very loving, big, loud family; but when she passed, you know, things obviously changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad remarried within the year. It was very quickly that he knew he needed help\u2014he had these seven kids. My stepmother came in with two kids. She was widowed as well. Someone put them on a blind date, you know\u2014which is crazy\u2014because she took on <em>seven<\/em> step kids. To this day, I cannot imagine being a widow with two kids and then taking on <em>seven<\/em> kids\u2014would be crazy. But, she came on\u2014really strong \/ very strict\u2014a good Christian woman\u2014but a lot of the law \/ not a lot of the love. So, it was very harsh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were a little girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right; definitely. Later on, that became hard for me; but I <em>totally<\/em> rebelled, as a teenager\u2014I just was fed up\u2014you know, couldn\u2019t handle it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember having conversations with God, telling Him, \u201cThis isn\u2019t really about <em>us<\/em>\u2014but this isn\u2019t between me and You\u2014it\u2019s between me and <em>her<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So your rebellion was against your stepmom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Oh, big time. I wanted to hurt her so bad, emotionally, because she was <em>emotionally<\/em> hurting me so badly. I wanted to hurt her back. So, I started sneaking out and doing things I shouldn\u2019t have been doing, <em>knowing<\/em>\u2014oh, my goodness, I knew right from wrong\u2014so I would go and do these things, but I would be so guilt-ridden later because I knew it was wrong. But I just had this war going on inside of me that I just couldn\u2019t take it anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. The spiritual turnaround for you came, really, when you met Jack; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. Yes, because that\u2019s right\u2014he started taking me. I grew up in a little Baptist church. It was wonderful. I have great memories; and yet, I didn\u2019t know how to <em>live <\/em>the Word of God. It just wasn\u2019t part of me. I knew all the Bible stories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew David and Goliath and all of that\u2014and I believed it 100 percent\u2014but I didn\u2019t know how to apply verses to my everyday life\u2014my everyday problems\u2014and trust the Lord in each one of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Had I known that, as a teen, I don\u2019t think I would have rebelled to the extent that I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jack, you\u2019d been a Christian about ten months when you connected with Lisa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, about that\u2014right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why did you ask her out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Wow! That\u2019s a great question. It\u2019s\u2014I wish I could tell you some incredibly amazing spiritual story how we met\u2014but I was actually kind of working \u201cout of my office\u201d, so to speak, for a construction company.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were how old at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I was 20 at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Lisa was how old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>She was 18 at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I was working, as I said, out of the office. The office was the beach\u2014the Newport Beach. I was playing volleyball. All I had to do was organize these construction crews, and all I needed was a phone. A friend and I were playing volleyball. We saw Lisa and her friend. A friend of mine had told me: \u201cHey Jack, there\u2019s a really good Christian girl right there. I know her from school.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually\u2014my experience, as a Christian man, at that time, with Christian girls\u2014wasn\u2019t much different than the world. I had built up a wall of defense. I just thought to myself, \u201cThere are no Christian girls out there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, this friend of mine said, \u201cShe\u2019s different.\u201d I have to tell you\u2014at 18 years of age, I got a chance to see her Bible. Our first date was to Calvary Chapel. I got to see her Bible. It was marked up, and tagged, and worn out. That impressed me, but she was blown away with what I thought was normal church. I\u2019d never been to a church before\u2014but it was verse by verse \/ expositional teaching\u2014with Pastor Chuck Smith there in Costa Mesa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It was just plugging along\u2014plugging away. She went and just absolutely\u2014having that faith in Jesus\u2014but not the instruction given on a daily basis. It changed everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>So, it was a joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You dated a short period of time and got married. How did you ask her to marry you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I actually was on my way to work one Saturday morning, and I had bought a ring. I just\u2014praying and concluding, \u201cThere\u2019s no way that I want to live the rest of my life without this girl.\u201d You know, today, people would think, \u201cWell, you\u2019re too young.\u201d I have to tell you\u2014if we could have gotten married sooner, we would have gotten married sooner [Laughter] because I remember driving to her brother\u2019s house\u2014she was babysitting her brother\u2019s house. It was about four o\u2019clock in the morning. I knocked on the door\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Four o\u2019clock in the morning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. I was on my way to Santa Monica\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you know he was coming?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you know he was bringing a ring?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have a surfboard in the back of the car?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No, I had to go to work. This was a different day, and I had to go to Santa Monica that day. I\u2019ll never forget it\u2014knocked on the door. She opens the door and says, \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d I said, \u201cListen, I have to get to work, but will you marry me?\u201d She said, \u201cYes!\u201d If I remember right, I gave you the ring, right then and there; but you hardly opened up the screen door. She was probably in a daze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt about nine o\u2019clock that morning, I called her back and said, \u201cDo you realize what you did this morning?\u201d [Laughter] I could hear the buzz behind her in the phone call. Her sisters were talking. She goes, \u201cYes; but you know,\u201d\u2014this is terrible to admit in this program\u2014but she goes, \u201cbut tonight, when you get home, you need to talk to my dad.\u201d I should have done that first! [Laughter] But it was amazing. It was awesome, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you picked out the ring without her? You didn\u2019t know what kind of ring she wanted?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, I had a good chance. She\u2019s very simple\u2014very, very practical girl. So, it was a very simple solitaire ring; and it worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I did the same thing. I picked out the ring without Mary Ann looking at it. I mean, we\u2019d dated long enough that I had a pretty good idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, we\u2019re three for three here. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I want to know: \u201cWhen you opened the screen door, what were you thinking, at that point, at four a.m.?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I thought he was crazy; but I, you know, yes, we were already that close\u2014where we knew that this was what we wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it went really quickly, obviously; and we were kids. I mean, we were\u2014when I look back, it\u2019s like\u2014I was 19 when we got married. You were 21. So, \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you didn\u2019t know what you didn\u2019t know\u2014when you got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s very true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mean, you had no idea how your families of origin were going to affect your bonding and blending together, as husband and wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t have any sense of that; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No idea. In fact, Lisa held up the book on the flight in here today. She said, \u201cYou know, if we would have known what we\u2019ve written in this book\u2014if we would have <em>known<\/em> this\u2014how much different rearing our children would have been.\u201d That\u2019s the whole point of the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to read what you wrote, at this point. This is really Lisa speaking here. She said: \u201cI desperately wanted something different for my children. And yet, here Jack and I were\u2014two very imperfect people with vastly different upbringings\u2014hoping to turn things around with our own family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what? There are a lot of people who get married with that hope, \u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but they don\u2019t turn it around. They end up going into a dead end themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the thing\u2014because I remember having the same feeling when Mary Ann and I got married. Here\u2019s what we knew\u2014we knew we didn\u2019t want to repeat the mistakes we\u2019d seen our parents make; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So we thought, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to do that.\u201d Well, it\u2019s good to know what you\u2019re not going to do;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but it\u2019s better to know what you are going to do. We didn\u2019t know what we were going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We just knew what we weren\u2019t going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And so, now, we\u2019re just fumbling around for: \u201cWell, we\u2019re not going to do that; but we\u2019ll try something else out\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s the right word\u2014fumbled around\u2014because how many of us have experienced this?\u2014where you were brought up in whatever environment, and you decide: \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my mom,\u201d or, \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my dad in that area of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you embark upon a marriage\u2014you embark upon your children. Even though you\u2019ve made that oath, with yourself and with the heavens, you\u2019re not going to say or do that thing; and then, lo and behold, that very thing comes out of your mouth, or that very attitude is formed in you. And you said you would never be like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We address that in the book because it\u2019s God\u2019s desire, through the power of His Word, to change that around because, even though we might protest what we were given, it\u2019s been impressed upon us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We can only use what tools we have in our box\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014good, bad, or ugly. So, the whole point is to change that toolbox.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve talked to young couples who are thinking about getting married. They can relate to this because they can say, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like\u2014I\u2019ve been to Poughkeepsie. I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014we\u2019re not going to Poughkeepsie; alright?\u2019\u201d I go, \u201cOkay\u2014\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, Bob, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I have friends in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have listeners in Poughkeepsie. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I have friends in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But they look and they go, \u201cLook, I know we\u2019re not going to Poughkeepsie,\u201d and I go, \u201cOkay, so where are you going?\u201d They go, \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2014but we\u2019re not going to Poughkeepsie.\u201d Well, to make a marriage work, it\u2019s not enough to know where you\u2019re not going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have to know where you <em>are<\/em> going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s where couples just don\u2019t have that blueprint out in front of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you mentioned the word \u201cblueprint.\u201d Frankly, that\u2019s why we started FamilyLife, back in 1976. I decided there were three relationships in life I was not going to naturally be good at: my relationship with God, my relationship with my wife, and third, my relationship with my children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought: \u201cWhat better job in the world could you have?\u2014than to become a student of the blueprints from Scripture and find out how you relate to God\u2014rightly understanding who He is\u2014how you better love your spouse, and finally, how to pass on the right kind of legacy, just like you guys write about in your book, to the next generation.\u201d Really, this passage kind of sums it up. It\u2019s in Philippians, Chapter 3, verse 13. Paul says, \u201cBrothers, I did not consider that I had made it my own; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cI press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\u201d That\u2019s what we\u2019re offering people who are listening to our broadcast today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that the tomb is empty. Jesus Christ defeated death. He can defeat what is defeating you, as a couple. He can bring marriages back to life. Here\u2019s Pastor Jack Hibbs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s the right word\u2014fumbled around\u2014because how many of us have experienced this?\u2014where you were brought up in whatever environment, and you decide: \u201cI am <em>not<\/em> going to be like my mom,\u201d or, \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my dad in that area of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you embark upon a marriage\u2014you embark upon your children. Even though you\u2019ve made that oath, with yourself and with the heavens, you\u2019re not going to say or do that thing; and then, lo and behold, that very attitude is formed in you. If we don\u2019t have that right, our human relationships aren\u2019t going to be right. Second core message is our marriage relationship\u2014the strength and stability \/ the covenant nature of the marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third banner talks about the unique assignment that God has given to men, as husbands, and the unique assignment God has given to women, as wives. We believe those are spelled out clearly in Scripture. And then the fourth banner is the banner that talks about our responsibility to pass on a legacy of spiritual vitality to the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking about those banners as I was thinking about our guests today because I thought, \u201cThey would \u2018Amen,\u2019 on each one of those, I think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our guests were both given a different type of heritage, and they are in the process of leaving a different legacy. Jack and Lisa Hibbs join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Lisa, Jack, welcome to Little Rock!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s a far cry from Southern California, but we are delighted to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes. We are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Glad you\u2019re here\u2014glad you\u2019re here. Jack and Lisa founded Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills, in Southern California. How many years ago did you start that church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, we started as a home Bible study in 1990 with six of us, and the Lord\u2019s blessed! We have more than six now. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Somewhere between nine or ten thousand adults attending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How many children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>A lot of kids\u2014lot of kids. I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A lot of kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And marriage and family\u2019s been a big part of what the church\u2019s purpose is; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s a big part. It\u2019s increasing because what we see\u2014the age of those attending\u2014we\u2019re very encouraged because there\u2019re young families\u2014lots of kids. Because of that, yes, we have focused hard on family. It\u2019s something that we see vital to, of course, Christianity and beyond\u2014even our nation\u2014we need stronger families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did I hear right that you guys have utilized <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series\u2014that we put together\u2014at your church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We absolutely have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, and tell us what the response has been to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Every response that we have is a gathering that is packed out and sold out\u2014not that we sell tickets\u2014but I mean packed out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All six people came, then? They all came. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It\u2019s just a great success\u2014which just, again, adds to the vision of strengthening the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, and a church needs to be doing that. I applaud you, as a pastor, helping to give leadership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou two have been married more than 30 years. You have two daughters, who are married \/ two grandchildren. You\u2019ve crafted a book together\u2014your first book\u2014that\u2019s called <em>Turnaround at Home<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the whole concept of a turnaround. Now that I\u2019ve been through your book\u2014makes a lot of sense because, starting with you, Jack\u2014as a boy, you stuttered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, severe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your home should have been a place that protected you, but it wasn\u2019t. Take us there and explain what kind of family you came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>You know, it was the exact opposite of what you just articulated. My story starts out in the book with something that I had a chance to overhear. It was an afternoon\u2014it was in between both school and football practice. I\u2019d gone home to catch a lunch and then head back to school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom had no idea that I was in the room next door. She had a neighbor over. She was telling the neighbor that this process of her life\u2014when she had moved from Hawaii with my dad to San Diego\u2014she\u2019d become pregnant. That was not part of the plan. I had an older brother and an older sister, and that was it for my dad. She was pregnant, terrified, and scared. Eventually, my dad found out about that\u2014was very upset with that\u2014moved. My dad moved to Alaska. My mom and her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait; wait. He moved to Alaska in the middle of her pregnancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Very early on in the pregnancy. He was very upset about that\u2014wound up getting a job in Alaska.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, he is so angry about you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014so angry. My mom\u2014very alone and scared\u2014on December 24<sup>th<\/sup>, Christmas Eve, 1957, she attempted an abortion. It failed. She was found\u2014taken to the hospital\u2014where she and I stayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was born on January 15<sup>th<\/sup>. But from that time on\u2014my dad came back home when I was about nine months old\u2014but for that whole period of time, growing up\u2014just not welcomed in the family\u2014just didn\u2019t feel part of that. My dad, again\u2014what the book\u2019s about\u2014he grew up in a home that was not all that loving. It\u2019s just his way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He signed up for the military and even had to lie about his age; you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, he did that. Listen, I don\u2019t want to throw my dad under the bus because, again, he was acting upon the tools that he had growing up\u2014but, making a long story short\u2014just never connected with my dad\u2014never quite had the opportunity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real turning point for me was probably about the age of nine. He had discovered, \u201cI have to get this kid, Jack, plugged into something meaningful,\u201d\u2014put me in his truck\u2014which was a delight. I couldn\u2019t believe it\u2014drove me down to the local\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, wait a second. You couldn\u2019t believe he put you in his truck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes; because I did not have access to my dad, growing up. It was a very, very cold\u2014very harsh response toward me\u2014in anything and in everything. On top of the fact\u2014and I explain this in the book\u2014I stuttered really badly. So again, in his way, he\u2019d put his hands on his hips\u2014that\u2019s the picture I have of my dad, growing up. He\u2019d have his hands on his hips\u2014he would be looking at me. My dad was an ex-Marine. He would just say, \u201cSpit it out!\u201d You know: \u201cWhat are you trying to say?! What\u2019s wrong with you?!\u201d\u2014which is not good therapy for a kid\u2019s stuttering. I just learned how to tuck everything in \/ hide. Really, what it wound up resulting in\u2014was a very isolated childhood \/ very rejected\u2014but it spawned within me a lot of violence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were starting to tell us about a landmark moment when your dad took you off to sign you up for football. You were what?\u2014nine years old, at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Nine years old\u2014never forget it. It was unique because my dad specifically said: \u201cGet in the truck. We\u2019re going to go down to the park.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat had never happened before. I thought, \u201cOh, my goodness\u2014the heavens have parted,\u201d you know. I don\u2019t know what his motives were, but I thank God for them because he signed me up for the local contact football team\u2014for Junior All-American Football. It was the first time in my life that I thought I had some sort of a connection with a father-figure\u2014with my dad\u2014because every boy\u2014we talk about this in the book\u2014every <em>child<\/em> longs for a relationship with the father, but so much more the boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s what I thought would be a turning point for us. It didn\u2019t exactly work out that way, but the real redeeming moment was a phone call I got from my dad. He said: \u201cJackson, I went to the doctor today. I have a short time to live. Can you tell me about Jesus again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And you know, when you have the opportunity to lead somebody to Christ\u2014that\u2019s a relative, let alone your father \/ let alone a man that you never had much of a connection with\u2014I wanted him to get into heaven so badly that I started giving him the gospel in Genesis. Really! We were on the phone for a good two hours. He was silent. He listened to the whole thing. He accepted the Lord on the phone; and seven days later, my dad had passed. But it was absolutely remarkable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, again, that\u2019s part of the spirit of <em>Turnaround<\/em>. Our God is a God that turns things around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>He\u2019s done it in our lives\u2014He\u2019s done for us both, Lisa and I; He\u2019s done it for both of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>And He continues to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He really has. Lisa, you had your own turnaround, as well; except, yours is a bit different. You say you grew up in two very distinctly different Christian families. Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Well, the first one\u2014I was very young. I don\u2019t have a great recollection of it because my mother died when I was five. I was the baby of seven kids. From what I understand from my older siblings, I was tied to my mother\u2019s apron strings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a very loving, big, loud family; but when she passed, you know, things obviously changed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad remarried within the year. It was very quickly that he knew he needed help\u2014he had these seven kids. My stepmother came in with two kids. She was widowed as well. Someone put them on a blind date, you know\u2014which is crazy\u2014because she took on <em>seven<\/em> step kids. To this day, I cannot imagine being a widow with two kids and then taking on <em>seven<\/em> kids\u2014would be crazy. But, she came on\u2014really strong \/ very strict\u2014a good Christian woman\u2014but a lot of the law \/ not a lot of the love. So, it was very harsh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were a little girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right; definitely. Later on, that became hard for me; but I <em>totally<\/em> rebelled, as a teenager\u2014I just was fed up\u2014you know, couldn\u2019t handle it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember having conversations with God, telling Him, \u201cThis isn\u2019t really about <em>us<\/em>\u2014but this isn\u2019t between me and You\u2014it\u2019s between me and <em>her<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So your rebellion was against your stepmom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Oh, big time. I wanted to hurt her so bad, emotionally, because she was <em>emotionally<\/em> hurting me so badly. I wanted to hurt her back. So, I started sneaking out and doing things I shouldn\u2019t have been doing, <em>knowing<\/em>\u2014oh, my goodness, I knew right from wrong\u2014so I would go and do these things, but I would be so guilt-ridden later because I knew it was wrong. But I just had this war going on inside of me that I just couldn\u2019t take it anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. The spiritual turnaround for you came, really, when you met Jack; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly. Yes, because that\u2019s right\u2014he started taking me. I grew up in a little Baptist church. It was wonderful. I have great memories; and yet, I didn\u2019t know how to <em>live <\/em>the Word of God. It just wasn\u2019t part of me. I knew all the Bible stories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew David and Goliath and all of that\u2014and I believed it 100 percent\u2014but I didn\u2019t know how to apply verses to my everyday life\u2014my everyday problems\u2014and trust the Lord in each one of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Had I known that, as a teen, I don\u2019t think I would have rebelled to the extent that I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jack, you\u2019d been a Christian about ten months when you connected with Lisa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes, about that\u2014right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why did you ask her out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Wow! That\u2019s a great question. It\u2019s\u2014I wish I could tell you some incredibly amazing spiritual story how we met\u2014but I was actually kind of working \u201cout of my office\u201d, so to speak, for a construction company.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were how old at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I was 20 at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Lisa was how old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>She was 18 at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I was working, as I said, out of the office. The office was the beach\u2014the Newport Beach. I was playing volleyball. All I had to do was organize these construction crews, and all I needed was a phone. A friend and I were playing volleyball. We saw Lisa and her friend. A friend of mine had told me: \u201cHey Jack, there\u2019s a really good Christian girl right there. I know her from school.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI actually\u2014my experience, as a Christian man, at that time, with Christian girls\u2014wasn\u2019t much different than the world. I had built up a wall of defense. I just thought to myself, \u201cThere are no Christian girls out there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Well, this friend of mine said, \u201cShe\u2019s different.\u201d I have to tell you\u2014at 18 years of age, I got a chance to see her Bible. Our first date was to Calvary Chapel. I got to see her Bible. It was marked up, and tagged, and worn out. That impressed me, but she was blown away with what I thought was normal church. I\u2019d never been to a church before\u2014but it was verse by verse \/ expositional teaching\u2014with Pastor Chuck Smith there in Costa Mesa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>It was just plugging along\u2014plugging away. She went and just absolutely\u2014having that faith in Jesus\u2014but not the instruction given on a daily basis. It changed everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>So, it was a joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You dated a short period of time and got married. How did you ask her to marry you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I actually was on my way to work one Saturday morning, and I had bought a ring. I just\u2014praying and concluding, \u201cThere\u2019s no way that I want to live the rest of my life without this girl.\u201d You know, today, people would think, \u201cWell, you\u2019re too young.\u201d I have to tell you\u2014if we could have gotten married sooner, we would have gotten married sooner [Laughter] because I remember driving to her brother\u2019s house\u2014she was babysitting her brother\u2019s house. It was about four o\u2019clock in the morning. I knocked on the door\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Four o\u2019clock in the morning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. I was on my way to Santa Monica\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you know he was coming?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you know he was bringing a ring?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you have a surfboard in the back of the car?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No, I had to go to work. This was a different day, and I had to go to Santa Monica that day. I\u2019ll never forget it\u2014knocked on the door. She opens the door and says, \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d I said, \u201cListen, I have to get to work, but will you marry me?\u201d She said, \u201cYes!\u201d If I remember right, I gave you the ring, right then and there; but you hardly opened up the screen door. She was probably in a daze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt about nine o\u2019clock that morning, I called her back and said, \u201cDo you realize what you did this morning?\u201d [Laughter] I could hear the buzz behind her in the phone call. Her sisters were talking. She goes, \u201cYes; but you know,\u201d\u2014this is terrible to admit in this program\u2014but she goes, \u201cbut tonight, when you get home, you need to talk to my dad.\u201d I should have done that first! [Laughter] But it was amazing. It was awesome, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, you picked out the ring without her? You didn\u2019t know what kind of ring she wanted?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Oh, I had a good chance. She\u2019s very simple\u2014very, very practical girl. So, it was a very simple solitaire ring; and it worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I did the same thing. I picked out the ring without Mary Ann looking at it. I mean, we\u2019d dated long enough that I had a pretty good idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, we\u2019re three for three here. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I want to know: \u201cWhen you opened the screen door, what were you thinking, at that point, at four a.m.?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>I thought he was crazy; but I, you know, yes, we were already that close\u2014where we knew that this was what we wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it went really quickly, obviously; and we were kids. I mean, we were\u2014when I look back, it\u2019s like\u2014I was 19 when we got married. You were 21. So, \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you didn\u2019t know what you didn\u2019t know\u2014when you got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s very true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mean, you had no idea how your families of origin were going to affect your bonding and blending together, as husband and wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t have any sense of that; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>No idea. In fact, Lisa held up the book on the flight in here today. She said, \u201cYou know, if we would have known what we\u2019ve written in this book\u2014if we would have <em>known<\/em> this\u2014how much different rearing our children would have been.\u201d That\u2019s the whole point of the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to read what you wrote, at this point. This is really Lisa speaking here. She said: \u201cI desperately wanted something different for my children. And yet, here Jack and I were\u2014two very imperfect people with vastly different upbringings\u2014hoping to turn things around with our own family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes. That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what? There are a lot of people who get married with that hope, \u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but they don\u2019t turn it around. They end up going into a dead end themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the thing\u2014because I remember having the same feeling when Mary Ann and I got married. Here\u2019s what we knew\u2014we knew we didn\u2019t want to repeat the mistakes we\u2019d seen our parents make; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So we thought, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to do that.\u201d Well, it\u2019s good to know what you\u2019re not going to do;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014but it\u2019s better to know what you are going to do. We didn\u2019t know what we were going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We just knew what we weren\u2019t going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And so, now, we\u2019re just fumbling around for: \u201cWell, we\u2019re not going to do that; but we\u2019ll try something else out\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s the right word\u2014fumbled around\u2014because how many of us have experienced this?\u2014where you were brought up in whatever environment, and you decide: \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my mom,\u201d or, \u201cI am <em>not <\/em>going to be like my dad in that area of life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you embark upon a marriage\u2014you embark upon your children. Even though you\u2019ve made that oath, with yourself and with the heavens, you\u2019re not going to say or do that thing; and then, lo and behold, that very thing comes out of your mouth, or that very attitude is formed in you. And you said you would never be like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We address that in the book because it\u2019s God\u2019s desire, through the power of His Word, to change that around because, even though we might protest what we were given, it\u2019s been impressed upon us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>We can only use what tools we have in our box\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>\u2014good, bad, or ugly. So, the whole point is to change that toolbox.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve talked to young couples who are thinking about getting married. They can relate to this because they can say, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like\u2014I\u2019ve been to Poughkeepsie. I\u2019ll tell you what\u2014we\u2019re not going to Poughkeepsie; alright?\u2019\u201d I go, \u201cOkay\u2014\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, Bob, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>I have friends in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We have listeners in Poughkeepsie. I decided there were three relationships in life I was not going to naturally be good at: my relationship with God, my relationship with my wife, and third, my relationship with my children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought: \u201cWhat better job in the world could you have?\u2014than to become a student of the blueprints from Scripture and find out how you relate to God\u2014rightly understanding who He is\u2014how you better love your spouse, and finally, how to pass on the right kind of legacy, just like you guys write about in your book, to the next generation.\u201d Really, this passage kind of sums it up. It\u2019s in Philippians, Chapter 3, verse 13. Paul says, \u201cBrothers, I did not consider that I had made it my own; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cI press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\u201d That\u2019s what we\u2019re offering people who are listening to our broadcast today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jack: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that the tomb is empty. Jesus Christ defeated death. He can defeat what is defeating you, as a couple. He can bring marriages back to life.
