Moe Becnel says he and his wife, Paige, were pretty sure they were ready when they started their stepfamily. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> It started off with a real good honeymoon. We went off for a week. When we came back home, there was a big banner that our kids made. They hung it off the balcony in our home. It said, \u201cWelcome home, Mom and Dad.\u201d Wow! Could it get any better than that? Well, it didn\u2019t. [Laughter] It went downhill from there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, May 16<sup>th<\/sup>. Every blended family starts off with great expectations; but it\u2019s not unusual for those families to have some hiccups, along the way. We\u2019ll meet one couple today and find out how God met them in the middle of their challenges. We don\u2019t often get to have a live studio audience join us when we record <em>FamilyLife Today, <\/em>but today\u2019s program was actually recorded Valentine\u2019s week when we were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. We have a number of our cruisers joining us today; right? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we also have a good friend and colleague, Dennis, who is here with us and has been ministering onboard the cruise this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He has. Ron Deal joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Ron, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He has been ministering in the area of blended families. He heads up our blended family initiative and has been involved in creating material and resources and speaking on this subject for nearly three decades; right Ron?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes, and I\u2019m only 22. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019ve got something coming up in\u2014what is it?\u2014early October\u2014a special event that\u2018s taking place in Washington, DC.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> We have our second Summit on Stepfamily Ministry that will take place in Washington, DC, October 2 and 3\u2014one day \/a day-and-a-half\u2014before the <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> event that, of course, we would love for our listeners to join us at. The Summit on Stepfamily Ministry will be a gathering of ministry leaders, from around the country\u2014some of whom are doing stepfamily ministry and others who are just beginning to enter into this realm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said our \u201csecond summit.\u201d Bob, you know, and Dennis, you were both at our first summit in Dallas, this last year, in September. It was an amazing event. People came together around this idea that blended families can be homes of redemption. God is doing amazing things in people\u2019s lives and taking\u2014when life throws you a curve\u2014that God is stepping in and taking that family and moving them to a place where they are changing and redeeming back the next generation\u2014this generation. They\u2019re having marriages that are strong and stable. So, the Summit on Stepfamily Ministry is about encouraging church leaders to understand that and how to minister to couples in that scenario.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I really want to encourage anybody who\u2019s involved in stepfamily\/blended ministry in churches or ministries, all around the country, to come join us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Pastors are getting onboard\u2014youth ministries, children\u2019s ministries\u2014because it affects everybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And they\u2019re joining, and they\u2019re coming to the Summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Would you introduce our guests on the broadcast today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I would be happy to, Dennis. You know, at that Summit, Paige Becnel was able to join. Her husband was not able to be with us at that Summit. Their story\u2014the reason we\u2019re having them on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>today is that, to me, they represent everything that we would desire on behalf of blended families. They have a story of coming together with five children\u2014and having some rough times, turning the corner, repairing, following God through the difficulties\u2014and, then, coming out on the other side, redeemed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014victorious!\u2014and now in ministry. They\u2019ve been in stepfamily ministry for 15 years. They\u2019ve written a book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families. <\/em>What\u2019s more hopeful than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPlease welcome with me, to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Moe and Paige Becnel. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys\u2014talk to me about that journey that you had\u2014the early days\u2014and kind of waking up one day. When I talked to you about this, one time, you said, \u201cThe first four years were the death spiral.\u201d Ohhh\u2014tell me; what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes; yes. Well, it started off with a real good honeymoon. We went off for a week. When we came back home, there was a big banner that our kids made. They hung it off the balcony in our home. It said, \u201cWelcome home, Mom and Dad.\u201d Wow! Could it get any better than that? Well, it didn\u2019t. [Laughter] It went downhill from there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was the way she was treating my children and the way I was treating her children. There was harshness. You know, there were times when I would be talking to her kids. I would just be telling them something; and they would say, \u201cQuit yelling at us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cI\u2019m not yelling. This is yelling!!\u201d You know? I would just give them a yell-tone, you know? To me, I was not yelling; but they were sensing that I had harshness in me. We just kept on trying to figure out what we were doing wrong. It was just not working. The frustrating thing is that we had been saved. I was saved 11 years. She was saved about 8, when we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had been in church and even serving in ministry. When I met Paige, she was teaching women\u2019s Bible study. I was involved in several ministries. We were doing good stuff; but, then, when we got married, we weren\u2019t doing the right stuff. That was\u2014we weren\u2019t even serving in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Paige\u2014was the parenting-piece\u2014was that where most of the marital conflict was happening for you guys, early on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Really it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith blended families, it\u2019s always the children that the adults put in the middle that then affect your marriage. Instead of looking at us first and taking responsibility for our roles, as an adult and as the parent\u2014and as the husband\/wife role\u2014instead of looking at each other and saying, \u201cOkay, what are we doing wrong?\u201d we kept throwing the kids in the middle: \u201cIt\u2019s <em>your<\/em> child!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s <em>him<\/em>.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s <em>her<\/em>.\u201d \u201cDeal with <em>your<\/em>\u2014it is not <em>my <\/em>problem.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t put my kids in this.\u201d It was <em>always<\/em> coming back to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. And, Ron, that\u2019s pretty typical; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It is typical. As a matter of fact, we talked about that on the last <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> cruise\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cPillars of Stepparents\u2019 Success.\u201d One of the things that\u2019s very unique about marriage ministry to blended family couples is we can\u2019t just talk about what happens between couples\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as in communication skills, and managing conflict, and one-on-one kind of conversations, and qualities of marriage. We have to talk about the parenting piece because of what she just said. It becomes an easily dividing factor, where husbands and wives\u2014a parent and a step-parent\u2014sometimes, they\u2019re both stepparents\u2014have great intentions and goodwill toward all the children but, somehow, end up on opposite sides.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re on opposite sides around parenting, it reinforces this idea that: \u201cOkay. I\u2019m an outsider. You\u2019re an insider with your kids, and we\u2019re not together.\u201d When parenting is divided, the marriage is divided.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Let me add one more thing. It wasn\u2019t just the children issue. It was the fact that we thought we were ready for marriage when we married each other. We had waited two to three years after our divorces. We were feeling confident and comfortable; but, when we came together, some comments that I would make to Paige would remind her of pain from her former spouse and vice versa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of this junk just started coming up from inside of both of us. A glass of spilled milk just became a <em>huge<\/em> argument instead of cleaning up the milk; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> And, then, I think the children, too, were not really ready. They were still dealing with, \u201cHey! What about my mom\u2014or my dad?\u201d and a loyalty to them; and, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want this family!\u201d It was okay when we were dating\u2014everything was great. They loved each other and they loved us. Then we got married, and it just came to a screeching halt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you describe this \u201cdeath spiral\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as taking four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Four years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was it like at the bottom of that spiral?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s just say this\u2014I had never thrown anything in my life\u2014at anything or at anyone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the bottom of that death spiral, I was so frustrated that I took a hair brush and just threw it across the room at a television. I was just <em>done.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember going into my prayer closet, and just holding up my Bible, and saying: \u201cGod! Where in the Bible is there a blended family that can help us out? You have an answer for everything, but here is a family of seven and we are dying! What are You going to do about it, because I\u2019m done!\u201d That was the end for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you thinking, at that point: \u201cI\u2019m about to be \u201c0 for 2\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, I was\u2014emotionally, and spiritually, and mentally\u2014we were just drained. We just didn\u2019t know what to do. It seemed like we were taking two steps forward and thinking: \u201cYay! We have victory.\u201d And then, we would get knocked back five steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Okay. So, I want you to talk to the person, listening right now, who is in that spot because I think that is a very common experience for couples in blended families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They just don\u2019t know how to walk into the future. They just can\u2019t see it happening. They\u2019ve tried, and they\u2019ve tried everything they know, and they\u2019re just stuck. What sustained you? What kept you going? How did you find strength? What were the next steps?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Well, I just kept holding on to God\u2019s Word: \u201cGod, You have a plan. Jeremiah 29:11\u2014You have a plan for me, and it\u2019s always good.\u201d And, \u201cGod, I know there\u2019s a good place in here. I just have to find it.\u201d So, that was my stronghold\u2014I kept holding onto that. That still small voice came to me and said, \u201cYou know, My Son was a Stepchild.\u201d I thought, \u201cWhat are you talking about, God?\u201d I went back and read the story of Mary and Joseph and realized: \u201cWow! If I\u2019m raising Moe\u2019s children, what did Joseph have to go through to raise <em>God\u2019s Son<\/em>?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> That put it in a whole different perspective for me. That story gave me hope that I could do this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> We just kept searching the Scriptures after that\u2014you know\u2014we just kept looking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Okay. I\u2019m going to ask you in a minute: \u201cWhat did you start doing differently from that point forward?\u201d\u2014if you could, maybe, identify a couple of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> But one of the things I just don\u2019t want to miss\u2014for that listener right now\u2014is just the power of coming back to God\u2019s Word\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and how powerful He is\u2014and not giving up hope that He cares about you, and your life, and that He\u2019ll give you strength to press through. That\u2019s just so important because, without that, you don\u2019t have the willingness to try anything different\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly; exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014to move in a different direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> So what happened at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> I think, for me, it was stepping back\u2014just taking a step back and saying: \u201cOkay, we have done everything wrong for four years. We have to regroup\u2014first, with my relationship with God\u2014\u2018Alright, God, show me what I did wrong,\u2019 and regrouping with my husband and saying: \u2018Okay, we need to start over. We\u2019ve hurt each other. We\u2019ve hurt our kids. Let\u2019s take a step back and realize that God wants to <em>breathe life<\/em> into this family.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> That\u2019s where it took me to\u2014was God breathing life back into us, as His children. Then, Moe and me being able to breathe life into our family\u2014for our children\u2014because the only vision of marriage they had, up until we were married, was that marriage ended in divorce. That\u2019s not the vision I wanted them to live with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. What I want our audience to make sure they don\u2019t miss is that this life came after you surrendered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to surrender to Jesus Christ as Master and Lord\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and say: \u201cWould You do something out of the death? Raise this marriage,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s blended or otherwise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of marriages, listening to our broadcast, right now,\u2014. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who would describe the same darkness that you did about your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they\u2019re in need of the same surrender.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Can you think of something?\u2014I\u2019m curious: \u201cDid you approach the kids differently? Did you have a family meeting? What did you do to try to begin to engage them?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> I just\u2014it was like the Holy Spirit just started really dealing with me on that harsh tone and how I was pushing the kids away. I had that authoritative mentality that, \u201cI\u2019m the man in the home, and ya\u2019ll are going to listen to me!\u201d You know what? They listened to me, but I saw disrespect because I would then see them going to Paige and saying, \u201cThis is what Mr. Moe told me,\u201d\u2014they were crying. I just saw that I was breaking their hearts; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> God just started giving me a sensitive heart toward the children in that I needed to back off from that authoritative role. I had to repair the damage first. I started spending time with them and just let them know that I\u2019m interested in their life and I want to be a part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> We did have a family meeting. We sat all of the kids down in a circle. They were, at this time, probably 9 to19. We sat them down in a circle and apologized to every one of them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> \u2014for the past four years and what we had put them through and that we really and truly wanted to be the protector of their hearts and the lover of their souls, like God was. We wanted to live life with them and live a productive, happy, fun-filled family life. There was a lot of crying. Then, Moe and I each prayed for every child. That was a turning point for our family. It just seemed to break something in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> It was a defining moment in that it was a turning point, but we didn\u2019t become the perfect family that day. We\u2019re still not a perfect family, but we saw that there was just more grace in the home after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what happens when we surrender to Christ? True humility can set up residence in our hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We can admit we\u2019ve made a mistake\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and we can ask for forgiveness of a family member. That had to have happened after that family meeting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, all of a sudden, you were on the record of saying, \u201cThere\u2019s a new builder of the house;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwe\u2019re going about business in a new way here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, and they held us to it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know, I was thinking the same thing, Dennis, when they were talking. There was humility in what Moe did when he said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to deal with myself and my harshness before the Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> There was humility with what they did in parenting, as a team\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014to apologize to the kids and say, \u201cWe\u2019re regrouping.\u201d How powerful that humility was as a turning point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It had to even soften the children\u2019s hearts toward you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, it did! Kids, you know, are <em>so forgiving<\/em>\u2014if we just show true humility and true repentance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> They\u2019ve all grown up to be such men and women of God. Yes, a couple of years ago, we asked them what they thought about our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Before you read these, I want to set this up; okay?\u2014for the audience\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014because, in your book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families, <\/em>you say this in the introduction: \u201cDuring the first few years, there were isolated moments of closeness; but no sustained unity or harmony. There were many times when we wondered if we would ever overcome functioning as a fragmented unit and move on to becoming a family.\u201d That\u2019s that death spiral you\u2019ve been talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And then you say this: \u201cBut much to our joy, it did happen.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Year four was the death spiral year. Year eight, you had an opportunity to ask the kids, \u201cWhat\u2019s your point of view on the family?\u201d And they wrote tributes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Would you mind sharing some of those with us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Well, in year eight, our kids actually gave us a video for our anniversary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> They pulled videos and photos from our vacations and birthday parties and put this <em>Brady Bunch<\/em> video\u2014but they were over-singing the \u201cBecnel Bunch.\u201d [Laughter] We\u2019re sitting, watching this video with them in the room. Our mouths are just dropped down to our chests\u2014just in awe of what we are watching. They were young back then. They actually put in a few comments about: \u201cWe\u2019ve finally made it.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve grown together as a family.\u201d They were just celebrating the fact that we had unified in some manner, and they celebrated it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Paige, I know all of the kids wrote tributes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, they did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Do you mind sharing one with us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s really hard to pick just one. These were written just a few years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of our daughters wrote: \u201cOur family is everything to me. My family is two dads, two moms, three sisters, one brother, two brother-in-laws, one sister-in-law, and three nieces. I love them all equally because, in my life, they have played an equal part. I cannot imagine my life without any of them. It wouldn\u2019t be complete.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of our kids are now married, and they\u2019re all very close. I recently had a friend tell me\u2014who met all of our kids at Christmastime a couple years ago\u2014she said: \u201cYour family is seamless. If I didn\u2019t know that they were not all your children together, I couldn\u2019t tell.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It just really blessed us that that\u2019s what our family portrayed\u2014not because we were putting on a show\u2014because their hearts truly are knitted to each other and knitted to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ron has an Advisory Board that gives guidance to him as he\u2019s heading up the Blended Family Initiative. One member of that board is at the University of Auburn. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s done some research, Ron, that I want you to share, at this point, because they\u2019re illustrating that research. You know what I\u2019m talking about; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I know what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTheir life is a perfect example of what Dr. Francesca Adler-Baeder, from Auburn University, has found. She studied stepfamilies over a long period of time and watched the next generation; that is, when their kids grew up. What she found is that strong, stable, healthy stepfamilies bear children who grow up into adulthood and have a more positive view of marriage compared to children of divorce, or children whose parents are divided, or are unhappily married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have a much healthier view of marriage and, when they pick marital partners and get married themselves, their marriages\u2014and this, Dennis, is just amazing to me\u2014their marriages more reflect the health of the stepfamily marriage than of any parental divorce that led to the stepfamily experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, just like you guys\u2014your kids grow up now and their marriages are more reflective of <em>your<\/em> strong marriage\u201425 years, you\u2019re about to celebrate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, 25 years this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And that is a legacy that is being lived out every day in the life of the next generation. It\u2019s just an amazing thing that God does when He redeems us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I just have to say here, as we are talking and as you shared your story about the different legacy that\u2019s occurring here, I thought of Jeremiah 33, where God promises peace. Jeremiah says in verse 3\u2014actually, it\u2019s God speaking here\u2014He says: \u201cCall to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Later on in the passage, He talks about how He will bring it to health and healing. I think, in the midst of a broken situation, and perhaps facing another divorce, you humbled yourself\u2014surrendered to Christ\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and then you took that state of humbling yourself to Christ to your kids and asked for forgiveness. As a result, out of the ashes of that darkness,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014isn\u2019t it cool to see what God has done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It\u2019s amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really is cool. I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re written this book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families<\/em>. I think it\u2019s going to bring a lot of hope to a lot of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Would you guys thank Moe and Paige Becnel? Moe Becnel says he and his wife, Paige, were pretty sure they were ready when they started their stepfamily. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> It started off with a real good honeymoon. We went off for a week. When we came back home, there was a big banner that our kids made. They hung it off the balcony in our home. It said, \u201cWelcome home, Mom and Dad.\u201d Wow! Could it get any better than that? Well, it didn\u2019t. [Laughter] It went downhill from there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, May 16<sup>th<\/sup>. We don\u2019t often get to have a live studio audience join us when we record <em>FamilyLife Today, <\/em>but today\u2019s program was actually recorded Valentine\u2019s week when we were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. We have a number of our cruisers joining us today; right? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we also have a good friend and colleague, Dennis, who is here with us and has been ministering onboard the cruise this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He has. Ron Deal joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Ron, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He has been ministering in the area of blended families. He heads up our blended family initiative and has been involved in creating material and resources and speaking on this subject for nearly three decades; right Ron?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes, and I\u2019m only 22. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019ve got something coming up in\u2014what is it?\u2014early October\u2014a special event that\u2018s taking place in Washington, DC.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> We have our second Summit on Stepfamily Ministry that will take place in Washington, DC, October 2 and 3\u2014one day \/a day-and-a-half\u2014before the <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> event that, of course, we would love for our listeners to join us at. The Summit on Stepfamily Ministry will be a gathering of ministry leaders, from around the country\u2014some of whom are doing stepfamily ministry and others who are just beginning to enter into this realm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said our \u201csecond summit.\u201d Bob, you know, and Dennis, you were both at our first summit in Dallas, this last year, in September. It was an amazing event. People came together around this idea that blended families can be homes of redemption. God is doing amazing things in people\u2019s lives and taking\u2014when life throws you a curve\u2014that God is stepping in and taking that family and moving them to a place where they are changing and redeeming back the next generation\u2014this generation. They\u2019re having marriages that are strong and stable. So, the Summit on Stepfamily Ministry is about encouraging church leaders to understand that and how to minister to couples in that scenario.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I really want to encourage anybody who\u2019s involved in stepfamily\/blended ministry in churches or ministries, all around the country, to come join us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Pastors are getting onboard\u2014youth ministries, children\u2019s ministries\u2014because it affects everybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And they\u2019re joining, and they\u2019re coming to the Summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Would you introduce our guests on the broadcast today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I would be happy to, Dennis. You know, at that Summit, Paige Becnel was able to join. Her husband was not able to be with us at that Summit. Their story\u2014the reason we\u2019re having them on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>today is that, to me, they represent everything that we would desire on behalf of blended families. They have a story of coming together with five children\u2014and having some rough times, turning the corner, repairing, following God through the difficulties\u2014and, then, coming out on the other side, redeemed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014victorious!\u2014and now in ministry. They\u2019ve been in stepfamily ministry for 15 years. They\u2019ve written a book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families. <\/em>What\u2019s more hopeful than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPlease welcome with me, to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Moe and Paige Becnel. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys\u2014talk to me about that journey that you had\u2014the early days\u2014and kind of waking up one day. When I talked to you about this, one time, you said, \u201cThe first four years were the death spiral.\u201d Ohhh\u2014tell me; what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes; yes. Well, it started off with a real good honeymoon. We went off for a week. When we came back home, there was a big banner that our kids made. They hung it off the balcony in our home. It said, \u201cWelcome home, Mom and Dad.\u201d Wow! Could it get any better than that? Well, it didn\u2019t. [Laughter] It went downhill from there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was the way she was treating my children and the way I was treating her children. There was harshness. You know, there were times when I would be talking to her kids. I would just be telling them something; and they would say, \u201cQuit yelling at us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cI\u2019m not yelling. This is yelling!!\u201d You know? I would just give them a yell-tone, you know? To me, I was not yelling; but they were sensing that I had harshness in me. We just kept on trying to figure out what we were doing wrong. It was just not working. The frustrating thing is that we had been saved. I was saved 11 years. She was saved about 8, when we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had been in church and even serving in ministry. When I met Paige, she was teaching women\u2019s Bible study. I was involved in several ministries. We were doing good stuff; but, then, when we got married, we weren\u2019t doing the right stuff. That was\u2014we weren\u2019t even serving in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Paige\u2014was the parenting-piece\u2014was that where most of the marital conflict was happening for you guys, early on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Really it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith blended families, it\u2019s always the children that the adults put in the middle that then affect your marriage. Instead of looking at us first and taking responsibility for our roles, as an adult and as the parent\u2014and as the husband\/wife role\u2014instead of looking at each other and saying, \u201cOkay, what are we doing wrong?\u201d we kept throwing the kids in the middle: \u201cIt\u2019s <em>your<\/em> child!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s <em>him<\/em>.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s <em>her<\/em>.\u201d \u201cDeal with <em>your<\/em>\u2014it is not <em>my <\/em>problem.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t put my kids in this.\u201d It was <em>always<\/em> coming back to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. And, Ron, that\u2019s pretty typical; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It is typical. As a matter of fact, we talked about that on the last <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> cruise\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cPillars of Stepparents\u2019 Success.\u201d One of the things that\u2019s very unique about marriage ministry to blended family couples is we can\u2019t just talk about what happens between couples\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as in communication skills, and managing conflict, and one-on-one kind of conversations, and qualities of marriage. We have to talk about the parenting piece because of what she just said. It becomes an easily dividing factor, where husbands and wives\u2014a parent and a step-parent\u2014sometimes, they\u2019re both stepparents\u2014have great intentions and goodwill toward all the children but, somehow, end up on opposite sides.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you\u2019re on opposite sides around parenting, it reinforces this idea that: \u201cOkay. I\u2019m an outsider. You\u2019re an insider with your kids, and we\u2019re not together.\u201d When parenting is divided, the marriage is divided.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Let me add one more thing. It wasn\u2019t just the children issue. It was the fact that we thought we were ready for marriage when we married each other. We had waited two to three years after our divorces. We were feeling confident and comfortable; but, when we came together, some comments that I would make to Paige would remind her of pain from her former spouse and vice versa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of this junk just started coming up from inside of both of us. A glass of spilled milk just became a <em>huge<\/em> argument instead of cleaning up the milk; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> And, then, I think the children, too, were not really ready. They were still dealing with, \u201cHey! What about my mom\u2014or my dad?\u201d and a loyalty to them; and, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want this family!\u201d It was okay when we were dating\u2014everything was great. They loved each other and they loved us. Then we got married, and it just came to a screeching halt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you describe this \u201cdeath spiral\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as taking four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Four years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was it like at the bottom of that spiral?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s just say this\u2014I had never thrown anything in my life\u2014at anything or at anyone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the bottom of that death spiral, I was so frustrated that I took a hair brush and just threw it across the room at a television. I was just <em>done.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember going into my prayer closet, and just holding up my Bible, and saying: \u201cGod! Where in the Bible is there a blended family that can help us out? You have an answer for everything, but here is a family of seven and we are dying! What are You going to do about it, because I\u2019m done!\u201d That was the end for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you thinking, at that point: \u201cI\u2019m about to be \u201c0 for 2\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, I was\u2014emotionally, and spiritually, and mentally\u2014we were just drained. We just didn\u2019t know what to do. It seemed like we were taking two steps forward and thinking: \u201cYay! We have victory.\u201d And then, we would get knocked back five steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Okay. So, I want you to talk to the person, listening right now, who is in that spot because I think that is a very common experience for couples in blended families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> They just don\u2019t know how to walk into the future. They just can\u2019t see it happening. They\u2019ve tried, and they\u2019ve tried everything they know, and they\u2019re just stuck. What sustained you? What kept you going? How did you find strength? What were the next steps?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Well, I just kept holding on to God\u2019s Word: \u201cGod, You have a plan. Jeremiah 29:11\u2014You have a plan for me, and it\u2019s always good.\u201d And, \u201cGod, I know there\u2019s a good place in here. I just have to find it.\u201d So, that was my stronghold\u2014I kept holding onto that. That still small voice came to me and said, \u201cYou know, My Son was a Stepchild.\u201d I thought, \u201cWhat are you talking about, God?\u201d I went back and read the story of Mary and Joseph and realized: \u201cWow! If I\u2019m raising Moe\u2019s children, what did Joseph have to go through to raise <em>God\u2019s Son<\/em>?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> That put it in a whole different perspective for me. That story gave me hope that I could do this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> We just kept searching the Scriptures after that\u2014you know\u2014we just kept looking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Okay. I\u2019m going to ask you in a minute: \u201cWhat did you start doing differently from that point forward?\u201d\u2014if you could, maybe, identify a couple of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> But one of the things I just don\u2019t want to miss\u2014for that listener right now\u2014is just the power of coming back to God\u2019s Word\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and how powerful He is\u2014and not giving up hope that He cares about you, and your life, and that He\u2019ll give you strength to press through. That\u2019s just so important because, without that, you don\u2019t have the willingness to try anything different\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly; exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014to move in a different direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> So what happened at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> I think, for me, it was stepping back\u2014just taking a step back and saying: \u201cOkay, we have done everything wrong for four years. We have to regroup\u2014first, with my relationship with God\u2014\u2018Alright, God, show me what I did wrong,\u2019 and regrouping with my husband and saying: \u2018Okay, we need to start over. We\u2019ve hurt each other. We\u2019ve hurt our kids. Let\u2019s take a step back and realize that God wants to <em>breathe life<\/em> into this family.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> That\u2019s where it took me to\u2014was God breathing life back into us, as His children. Then, Moe and me being able to breathe life into our family\u2014for our children\u2014because the only vision of marriage they had, up until we were married, was that marriage ended in divorce. That\u2019s not the vision I wanted them to live with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. What I want our audience to make sure they don\u2019t miss is that this life came after you surrendered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to surrender to Jesus Christ as Master and Lord\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and say: \u201cWould You do something out of the death? Raise this marriage,\u201d\u2014whether it\u2019s blended or otherwise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are a lot of marriages, listening to our broadcast, right now,\u2014. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who would describe the same darkness that you did about your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they\u2019re in need of the same surrender.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Can you think of something?\u2014I\u2019m curious: \u201cDid you approach the kids differently? Did you have a family meeting? What did you do to try to begin to engage them?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> I just\u2014it was like the Holy Spirit just started really dealing with me on that harsh tone and how I was pushing the kids away. I had that authoritative mentality that, \u201cI\u2019m the man in the home, and ya\u2019ll are going to listen to me!\u201d You know what? They listened to me, but I saw disrespect because I would then see them going to Paige and saying, \u201cThis is what Mr. Moe told me,\u201d\u2014they were crying. I just saw that I was breaking their hearts; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> God just started giving me a sensitive heart toward the children in that I needed to back off from that authoritative role. I had to repair the damage first. I started spending time with them and just let them know that I\u2019m interested in their life and I want to be a part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> We did have a family meeting. We sat all of the kids down in a circle. They were, at this time, probably 9 to19. We sat them down in a circle and apologized to every one of them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> \u2014for the past four years and what we had put them through and that we really and truly wanted to be the protector of their hearts and the lover of their souls, like God was. We wanted to live life with them and live a productive, happy, fun-filled family life. There was a lot of crying. Then, Moe and I each prayed for every child. That was a turning point for our family. It just seemed to break something in our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> It was a defining moment in that it was a turning point, but we didn\u2019t become the perfect family that day. We\u2019re still not a perfect family, but we saw that there was just more grace in the home after that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what happens when we surrender to Christ? True humility can set up residence in our hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We can admit we\u2019ve made a mistake\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and we can ask for forgiveness of a family member. That had to have happened after that family meeting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, all of a sudden, you were on the record of saying, \u201cThere\u2019s a new builder of the house;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwe\u2019re going about business in a new way here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, and they held us to it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> You know, I was thinking the same thing, Dennis, when they were talking. There was humility in what Moe did when he said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to deal with myself and my harshness before the Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> There was humility with what they did in parenting, as a team\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014to apologize to the kids and say, \u201cWe\u2019re regrouping.\u201d How powerful that humility was as a turning point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> It had to even soften the children\u2019s hearts toward you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, it did! Kids, you know, are <em>so forgiving<\/em>\u2014if we just show true humility and true repentance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> They\u2019ve all grown up to be such men and women of God. Yes, a couple of years ago, we asked them what they thought about our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Before you read these, I want to set this up; okay?\u2014for the audience\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014because, in your book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families, <\/em>you say this in the introduction: \u201cDuring the first few years, there were isolated moments of closeness; but no sustained unity or harmony. There were many times when we wondered if we would ever overcome functioning as a fragmented unit and move on to becoming a family.\u201d That\u2019s that death spiral you\u2019ve been talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And then you say this: \u201cBut much to our joy, it did happen.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Year four was the death spiral year. Year eight, you had an opportunity to ask the kids, \u201cWhat\u2019s your point of view on the family?\u201d And they wrote tributes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Would you mind sharing some of those with us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Well, in year eight, our kids actually gave us a video for our anniversary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> They pulled videos and photos from our vacations and birthday parties and put this <em>Brady Bunch<\/em> video\u2014but they were over-singing the \u201cBecnel Bunch.\u201d [Laughter] We\u2019re sitting, watching this video with them in the room. Our mouths are just dropped down to our chests\u2014just in awe of what we are watching. They were young back then. They actually put in a few comments about: \u201cWe\u2019ve finally made it.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve grown together as a family.\u201d They were just celebrating the fact that we had unified in some manner, and they celebrated it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Paige, I know all of the kids wrote tributes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, they did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Do you mind sharing one with us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s really hard to pick just one. These were written just a few years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of our daughters wrote: \u201cOur family is everything to me. My family is two dads, two moms, three sisters, one brother, two brother-in-laws, one sister-in-law, and three nieces. I love them all equally because, in my life, they have played an equal part. I cannot imagine my life without any of them. It wouldn\u2019t be complete.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of our kids are now married, and they\u2019re all very close. I recently had a friend tell me\u2014who met all of our kids at Christmastime a couple years ago\u2014she said: \u201cYour family is seamless. If I didn\u2019t know that they were not all your children together, I couldn\u2019t tell.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It just really blessed us that that\u2019s what our family portrayed\u2014not because we were putting on a show\u2014because their hearts truly are knitted to each other and knitted to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ron has an Advisory Board that gives guidance to him as he\u2019s heading up the Blended Family Initiative. One member of that board is at the University of Auburn. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s done some research, Ron, that I want you to share, at this point, because they\u2019re illustrating that research. You know what I\u2019m talking about; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> I know what you\u2019re talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTheir life is a perfect example of what Dr. Francesca Adler-Baeder, from Auburn University, has found. She studied stepfamilies over a long period of time and watched the next generation; that is, when their kids grew up. What she found is that strong, stable, healthy stepfamilies bear children who grow up into adulthood and have a more positive view of marriage compared to children of divorce, or children whose parents are divided, or are unhappily married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have a much healthier view of marriage and, when they pick marital partners and get married themselves, their marriages\u2014and this, Dennis, is just amazing to me\u2014their marriages more reflect the health of the stepfamily marriage than of any parental divorce that led to the stepfamily experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, just like you guys\u2014your kids grow up now and their marriages are more reflective of <em>your<\/em> strong marriage\u201425 years, you\u2019re about to celebrate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Yes, 25 years this year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> And that is a legacy that is being lived out every day in the life of the next generation. It\u2019s just an amazing thing that God does when He redeems us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I just have to say here, as we are talking and as you shared your story about the different legacy that\u2019s occurring here, I thought of Jeremiah 33, where God promises peace. Jeremiah says in verse 3\u2014actually, it\u2019s God speaking here\u2014He says: \u201cCall to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Later on in the passage, He talks about how He will bring it to health and healing. I think, in the midst of a broken situation, and perhaps facing another divorce, you humbled yourself\u2014surrendered to Christ\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and then you took that state of humbling yourself to Christ to your kids and asked for forgiveness. As a result, out of the ashes of that darkness,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014isn\u2019t it cool to see what God has done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Moe:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paige:<\/strong> It\u2019s amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really is cool. I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re written this book, <em>God Breathes on Blended Families<\/em>.
