I should let you know that what you are listening to today we actually recorded back in February when we were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. Some of the folks on the cruise got a chance to have a sneak preview of the movie that is opening tonight in theaters all across the country. It\u2019s the movie, <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>. What did you guys think of the movie? [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we have with us the producer, Kevin Downes, and Andy Erwin\u2014join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. How does that make you feel to hear response like that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>I would like this crowd to travel with us to every theater because you guys are awesome. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think they are up for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We also have Alex Kendrick with us, who is a friend, and who also stars in this movie. Glad to have you back with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Awesome to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Great movie. It celebrates moms and motherhood. We\u2019re all about that, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Kevin, the last time most of our listeners had a chance to see you, you were the bad cop in <em>Courageous<\/em>; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes. You know, jail did a good thing for me. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you have some rehab there; did you?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>I learned to play video games in jail. It was really wild. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story about this film\u2014where the idea came from and the phone call that you got. It was kind of one of those instant: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make this movie,\u201d-things; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Well, you know what?\u00a0 One of the things I was blessed to be a part of was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Alex was very giving in allowing me to talk at various events about <em>Courageous<\/em>. It was actually an event in Ecuador that kind of\u2014we started talking a little bit about <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>. I would get asked a lot about what I would be doing next as an actor. It was just\u2014I believe God put it on my heart to want to make a film that was about moms. Most of the films I\u2019ve done in my career have been very guy-heavy and guy-oriented. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, it\u2019s a very risky venture to make a comedy like <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> because I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve ever seen a film like it. It\u2019s so unique. It\u2019s just really\u2014it was so much fun to watch it with the audience today and to see their reaction. That was the reason why we made the film so that moms could really celebrate their lives and the journey that they go through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Andy, I watched the movie with my son-in-law, Jake, and my daughter, Rebecca. I was really interested to see what my son-in-law thought of this movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were instantly drawn into this. This is one for both moms and dads; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes. What attracted us to the story was Kevin had been a longtime friend\u2014and he brought us the script. We looked at it and said, \u201cThis is our lives.\u201d\u00a0 John has three kids. He has a newborn, right now, and two that are under the age of five. Then, my wife, Mandy, and I have a five-year-old and a two-year-old. It was like everything in this script has happened to us, at some point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we tried to have a point of view from the dads and the moms. It celebrates the chaos of parenting. You can either laugh at the hardships or cry. It\u2019s a lot more cathartic to laugh. It allowed us to explore some ways to affirm our wives but in a way where we can laugh and have a good time. I think there is something for everybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, what if everything in the movie has happened to you and your brother at some point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, that call to child services\u2014it\u2019s actually happened\u2014mostly to my brother. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs John started rewriting some of this stuff, people would look at the script and be like: \u201cThat\u2019s not realistic. That\u2019s never happened.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cYes, it happened on Tuesday.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Kevin, tell us about casting this film because you got a lot of veteran Hollywood actors who got involved in this movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>This was actually a really easy movie to cast. I mean\u2014this is how Alex Kendrick got involved. We were having breakfast in Mexico City: \u201cI want to play the pastor.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAlright! Done!\u201d\u2014that was about it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of the conversations\u2014the first time we met with Sarah Drew\u2014who plays Allyson\u2014she was our top choice for it. We met with her for two hours\u2014John, Andy, and myself. We knew, coming out of that\u2014because she lives that character of Allyson. She\u2019s a mom and she believes in the themes of the movie. She\u2019s actually going out\u2014speaking\/representing the movie because it\u2019s on her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we wanted in this film\u2014was actors who really believed in the themes and lifting up the themes of this movie. And we got it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody that we went out to said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Trace Adkins\u2014John wrote the role of Bones specifically for Trace Adkins and didn\u2019t know if he would say yes. When he read the script, he fell in love with it and immediately said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was a really fun movie to cast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>And Alex and Kevin can attest to\u2014very rarely when you do a film, do you get your first or second choice for actors. Across the board, God just opened up the door for us to get our first choice in every role. So, it was an amazing cast. It was a God-thing. And just\u2014we knew that with comedy it rose and fell on how good the cast was. <em>Everybody<\/em> just played their part in harmony beautifully\u2014so, it came together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, I just want to take a second to say, \u201cThanks,\u201d to Alex\u2014that I think that a sign of a good leader is somebody that launches other leaders. It was on the set of <em>Courageous <\/em>that really kind of inspired John to get out of the boat and say, \u201cHey, we need to start telling our stories,\u201d because of a challenge from Alex. He\u2019s been supportive of us along the way. So, to collaborate on this one with him, being an actor in it,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is only the tip of the iceberg of the impact he\u2019s had on us. So, \u201cThanks.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That is cool. [Applause]\u00a0 Alex, in most of the movies you\u2019ve been in, you have worked with non-professional actors. I mean, you have had a few guys like Kirk Cameron who you\u2019ve worked with who has had some acting background. Was it a different experience for you to work in a movie with folks who have done TV and film for a number of years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>It was. But this was a great privilege for me, too, because, as you can tell\u2014in speaking, even to the audience in front of me, that\u2019s just seen in the film\u2014these movies, made by people who love the Lord and want to honor Him\u2014the caliber of quality is getting better, and better, and better. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>And we need that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>\u2014because\u2014yes\u2014my brother, Stephen, and I are striving with every project we do to make it better and better in honor of a God who does thing with excellence. So, we\u2019re learning. And these guys, as you\u2019ve already seen tonight, have a <em>lot<\/em> of talent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the Lord is blessing these efforts. They <em>made sure<\/em> that this was a family-friendly\u2014something valuable to say. You don\u2019t just leave having been entertained, and laughed, and teared-up at times; but you leave [with] something redeeming, and wholesome, and affirming\u2014great joy to work with these guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Alex, I know you\u2019re going to agree with this. I want to address the live audience here\u2014but also the ones who are listening. There were props\u2014there were things that showed up in the process that could only be attributed to God. Have you got one of those stories of how God provided something\u2014either the financing or maybe it was the actors and actresses that He provided?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, I think that on two occasions\u2014one was the little baby boy that plays Beck that\u2019s\u2014his name is Zion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were looking to cast that part up until the day we started filming\u2014the day before. And we were just like\u2014with the kids, it was so\u2014we were casting a lot of it in L.A. We just hadn\u2019t found this right kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the other two roles we were trying to cast were the two little Hispanic twins. We said: \u201cLord, we need twins that are not just Hispanic, but half-Hispanic, that are two-and-a-half years old. We can\u2019t find them anywhere around.\u201d\u00a0 We were sitting at a restaurant with Kevin and\u2014.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, we\u2019re not in California. We\u2019re in Birmingham, Alabama. [Laughter] We are at a Cuban restaurant that\u2019s located inside of a carwash. [Laughter] So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In Birmingham?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>In Birmingham!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Called Miami Caf\u00e9. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>And literally, I\u2019m hyperventilating, at this point, going: \u201cOkay, we start shooting in about two weeks. Where are we going to find half-Hispanic twin two-year-old boys?\u201d\u00a0 And we just had this conversation that morning, and we finished lunch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk outside. I turn around\u2014and out\u2014come, stumbling, these two-year-old, half-Hispanic twin boys. Both of us had our jaws drop. We couldn\u2019t say anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>It was like d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. You saw the first one go by. You\u2019re like, \u201cOh, he\u2019s a cute kid.\u201d\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden\u2014like the same one came by, dressed the same way. I was like, \u201cKevin, go talk to them in a non-creepy way.\u201d\u00a0 He goes over: \u201cHello, son! How old are you?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cKevin, that\u2019s the creepiest way you could talk to them!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Then, their mom must have looked at me like I was insane because I\u2019m like, \u201cWe\u2019re shooting a movie,\u201d\u2014and we\u2019re in Birmingham, Alabama\u2014anyway, it all worked out. They were really cute and hilarious, but God totally just dropped them in our laps. It was amazing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>It really was. We were looking to cast the right kid. We needed somebody who just <em>loved<\/em> the camera and just was real natural. We just didn\u2019t know anybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the night before, I was talking with my wife, Mandy. I said, \u201cYou know, your friend, Natalie, has really cute kids; and she\u2019s a photographer.\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cAsk her to bring their youngest over.\u201d\u00a0 She was like, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 We brought him over, and I filmed him with my iPhone\u00ae. He just loved the camera. We actually cast him that night and put him in front of the camera the next morning. He <em>stole<\/em> the show. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Next time, call me. We\u2019ve got 20 grandkids. We\u2019ve got plenty who love\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019ll come when we talk to your agent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the camera. [Laughter]\u00a0 Trust me, they love the camera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alex, let me ask you because you have been\u2014well, I\u2019m thinking back to when <em>Facing the Giants<\/em> came to theaters. What year was that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>2006. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That year, I think, that was the only Christian movie that came out in movie theaters the whole year, maybe. I mean, now in 2014, it\u2019s like every couple of weeks we are seeing movies that are either Christian films made by Christians or biblical films made by Hollywood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>And may they continue\u2014to honor God!\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What\u2019s going on in Hollywood with all of this Christian movie stuff?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Well, for one thing, I think they\u2019re acknowledging there is a large percentage of the population that loves God-honoring and family-honoring media. When we see it, we support it. As it gets better and better in quality, you\u2019re going to see a growing arena of films and stories that honor the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you remember, there was a time in the 40s and 50s\u2014you know <em>Ben Hur, The Robe, Ten Commandments<\/em>\u2014when these\u2014<em>Sergeant York<\/em>\u2014these types of movies were made on a pretty regular basis. I think we got off track for a couple of decades. As the tools become more available, and as we pour into the next generation of filmmakers that desire to honor the Lord, you\u2019re going to see more of these types of projects. Praise God\u2014may they continue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Andy, you and your brother started in your career in your childhood, really. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to ask all three of you guys this question because you\u2019ve broken into an arena that we really haven\u2019t been in a number of years, as you mentioned, Alex. If you could do anything in the world and couldn\u2019t fail, what would you do?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>You ask a great question. I think the Lord\u2019s wired me to want to tell stories that draw people to a closer relationship with Him. So, that\u2019s what I would do. To some degree, He\u2019s allowing me a chance\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>\u2014to do that. Yes, and so extremely fulfilling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Kevin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, for me, I\u2014you know, the first film I produced was in 1998. What\u2019s happening this year\u2014in 2014\u2014was a dream of mine in 1998\u2014that there would be a dozen or so films that represent our core values, that honor God, and filmmakers that honor Him with their lives are pouring out their talent into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re all enjoying those films. We\u2019re taking away something that draws us closer to God and really humbles us. I think that\u2019s happening\u2014that dream\u2019s being fulfilled and realized now. And to answer your question, I\u2019m living that. I wouldn\u2019t do anything else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool. Andy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, well-said. I would definitely echo both of these guys. I think I\u2019m not a naturally very ambitious person. I worked for ESPN for years. I was happy as a camera man, working for ESPN; but in the process of us having this hobby that grew out of control\u2014I never thought that this would be the way we would earn our living\u2014it\u2019s just: \u201cWe have a hobby.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nice hobby, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, and in the process, men like Alex and Kevin challenged us that: \u201cHey, you have a voice too. Step off the sidelines and be willing to take that risk.\u201d\u00a0 I think that the privilege of being able to work around and with men of honor\u2014that have that passion to engage culture and not just snipe at it from the sidelines\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but to engage culture with entertainment and film, I just count myself very privileged. Every day, I have to pinch myself that this is what I get to do for a living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>And we all have a voice. Buy a ticket to <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s the film that\u2019s coming out next to our radio listeners. That\u2019s how we support and make a statement that these are the types of films that we want to see because Hollywood listens to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And opening weekend\u2014this weekend is the right weekend to buy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to go out and be in theaters this weekend\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, May 9<sup>th<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because the opening weekend determines whether a movie is going to be successful or not; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. Opening weekend determines a lot\u2014more than I ever understood until about a couple of years ago. I mean, even though\u2014like for <em>Courageous<\/em>, I was actually filming another movie during the opening weekend. I bought tickets for my entire cast and crew, after we wrapped opening weekend, to go see it\u2014even though I was in it, and I had seen it 20 times\u2014but we need to support the movies when they come out in theaters opening weekend to make a statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you guys went back to California, with <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> edited, to show to the executives at Sony\u2014sometimes, I know, they look at Christian films and they don\u2019t necessarily get it. They had to get this film. What kind of feedback did you get from them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>It was pretty amazing. After spending 15 minutes before we showed the film, staring in the mirror in the bathroom, saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to throw up,\u201d [Laughter] it was wonderful to walk it in. It\u2019s a neat feeling when you feel like you\u2019re not asking something from the audience that you\u2019re not able to give back to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the cool thing about <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> is\u2014I believe with it being on Mother\u2019s Day weekend and everything\u2014that this is an incredible gift that you can give the special woman in your life because it is entertaining. It\u2019s not a heavy burdensome movie. It\u2019s very much just something you\u2019re going to leave refreshed and affirmed about your family values. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we walked into Sony, I think it was really neat to see that: \u201cHey, this is different. This is something new.\u201d\u00a0 They kept saying: \u201cThis is a great crossover movie. There is nothing offensive in it to the audience, but there is something very relatable about parenting.\u201d\u00a0 Then, that gives us a really neat window to represent our worldview and values in that; but to do it, maybe, more subversively than ever before because it\u2019s something so disarming about being able to laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat in that room. One of the main executives that was in that room\u2014his mom was sitting right behind me. He brought his mom. She was cackling so loud that I could not hear the dialogue. I was like, \u201cWell, I think we\u2019re doing something right!\u201d\u00a0 So, it was good. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>To answer your question, we all\u2014about 20 of them saw the movie. We did it in a theater. When we gathered at the round table afterwards, the first comment that was said\u2014he goes: \u201cYou know, during the first ten minutes, my mouth, internally, was dropped. I couldn\u2019t believe it. And all I could think was:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201c\u2019\u2018Oh, please, don\u2019t let this fall apart!\u00a0 Oh, please, don\u2019t let this fall apart!\u2019\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand it didn\u2019t. You guys totally delivered.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s encouraging when you hear that kind of thing. Well, again, opens tonight in theaters all across the country. We\u2019re hoping that listeners will rally this weekend\u2014make it a big weekend for the movie\u2014not just for your guys\u2019 success\u2014but this really does make a statement to the industry about the kind of films that we want to see; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>I believe that\u2014with Alex\u2014he\u2019d probably echo this\u2014is we\u2019ve\u2014the core of guys who are represented here and others that have come along the way\u2014we have kind of \u201cthe next man up\u201d kind of philosophy\u2014that we all are supportive of each other\u2019s voice. Early on, Alex and Stephen both encouraged us that we all have the same heartbeat \/ same mission\u2014different jurisdictions of audiences that we can reach. Let\u2019s cheer each other on. So, in supporting that, we\u2019re continuing to be able to engage culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Absolutely, I think our films in the past\u2014<em>Fireproof<\/em>, <em>Courageous\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014heavier on the drama side. We needed some laughter. So, <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014to be honest, it has a few moments of laughter; but it\u2019s a pretty heavy topic. I think it was needed; but at the same time, it\u2014we also need the laughter, as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should mention\u2014you and your brother are right at the beginning stages of filming your next movie; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct, yes. Yes, we\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>\u2014you know, let\u2019s get <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> the momentum it needs and, then, my brother and I are heading into our next one. Some of the folks on the cruise got a chance to have a sneak preview of the movie that is opening tonight in theaters all across the country. It\u2019s the movie, <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>. What did you guys think of the movie? [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we have with us the producer, Kevin Downes, and Andy Erwin\u2014join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. How does that make you feel to hear response like that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>I would like this crowd to travel with us to every theater because you guys are awesome. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think they are up for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We also have Alex Kendrick with us, who is a friend, and who also stars in this movie. Glad to have you back with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Awesome to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Great movie. It celebrates moms and motherhood. We\u2019re all about that, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Kevin, the last time most of our listeners had a chance to see you, you were the bad cop in <em>Courageous<\/em>; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes. You know, jail did a good thing for me. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you have some rehab there; did you?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>I learned to play video games in jail. It was really wild. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story about this film\u2014where the idea came from and the phone call that you got. It was kind of one of those instant: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make this movie,\u201d-things; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Well, you know what?\u00a0 One of the things I was blessed to be a part of was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Alex was very giving in allowing me to talk at various events about <em>Courageous<\/em>. It was actually an event in Ecuador that kind of\u2014we started talking a little bit about <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>. I would get asked a lot about what I would be doing next as an actor. It was just\u2014I believe God put it on my heart to want to make a film that was about moms. Most of the films I\u2019ve done in my career have been very guy-heavy and guy-oriented. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, it\u2019s a very risky venture to make a comedy like <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> because I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve ever seen a film like it. It\u2019s so unique. It\u2019s just really\u2014it was so much fun to watch it with the audience today and to see their reaction. That was the reason why we made the film so that moms could really celebrate their lives and the journey that they go through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Andy, I watched the movie with my son-in-law, Jake, and my daughter, Rebecca. I was really interested to see what my son-in-law thought of this movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were instantly drawn into this. This is one for both moms and dads; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes. What attracted us to the story was Kevin had been a longtime friend\u2014and he brought us the script. We looked at it and said, \u201cThis is our lives.\u201d\u00a0 John has three kids. He has a newborn, right now, and two that are under the age of five. Then, my wife, Mandy, and I have a five-year-old and a two-year-old. It was like everything in this script has happened to us, at some point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we tried to have a point of view from the dads and the moms. It celebrates the chaos of parenting. You can either laugh at the hardships or cry. It\u2019s a lot more cathartic to laugh. It allowed us to explore some ways to affirm our wives but in a way where we can laugh and have a good time. I think there is something for everybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, what if everything in the movie has happened to you and your brother at some point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, that call to child services\u2014it\u2019s actually happened\u2014mostly to my brother. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs John started rewriting some of this stuff, people would look at the script and be like: \u201cThat\u2019s not realistic. That\u2019s never happened.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cYes, it happened on Tuesday.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Kevin, tell us about casting this film because you got a lot of veteran Hollywood actors who got involved in this movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>This was actually a really easy movie to cast. I mean\u2014this is how Alex Kendrick got involved. We were having breakfast in Mexico City: \u201cI want to play the pastor.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAlright! Done!\u201d\u2014that was about it. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of the conversations\u2014the first time we met with Sarah Drew\u2014who plays Allyson\u2014she was our top choice for it. We met with her for two hours\u2014John, Andy, and myself. We knew, coming out of that\u2014because she lives that character of Allyson. She\u2019s a mom and she believes in the themes of the movie. She\u2019s actually going out\u2014speaking\/representing the movie because it\u2019s on her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we wanted in this film\u2014was actors who really believed in the themes and lifting up the themes of this movie. And we got it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody that we went out to said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Trace Adkins\u2014John wrote the role of Bones specifically for Trace Adkins and didn\u2019t know if he would say yes. When he read the script, he fell in love with it and immediately said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was a really fun movie to cast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>And Alex and Kevin can attest to\u2014very rarely when you do a film, do you get your first or second choice for actors. Across the board, God just opened up the door for us to get our first choice in every role. So, it was an amazing cast. It was a God-thing. And just\u2014we knew that with comedy it rose and fell on how good the cast was. <em>Everybody<\/em> just played their part in harmony beautifully\u2014so, it came together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, I just want to take a second to say, \u201cThanks,\u201d to Alex\u2014that I think that a sign of a good leader is somebody that launches other leaders. It was on the set of <em>Courageous <\/em>that really kind of inspired John to get out of the boat and say, \u201cHey, we need to start telling our stories,\u201d because of a challenge from Alex. He\u2019s been supportive of us along the way. So, to collaborate on this one with him, being an actor in it,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is only the tip of the iceberg of the impact he\u2019s had on us. So, \u201cThanks.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That is cool. [Applause]\u00a0 Alex, in most of the movies you\u2019ve been in, you have worked with non-professional actors. I mean, you have had a few guys like Kirk Cameron who you\u2019ve worked with who has had some acting background. Was it a different experience for you to work in a movie with folks who have done TV and film for a number of years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>It was. But this was a great privilege for me, too, because, as you can tell\u2014in speaking, even to the audience in front of me, that\u2019s just seen in the film\u2014these movies, made by people who love the Lord and want to honor Him\u2014the caliber of quality is getting better, and better, and better. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>And we need that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>\u2014because\u2014yes\u2014my brother, Stephen, and I are striving with every project we do to make it better and better in honor of a God who does thing with excellence. So, we\u2019re learning. And these guys, as you\u2019ve already seen tonight, have a <em>lot<\/em> of talent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the Lord is blessing these efforts. They <em>made sure<\/em> that this was a family-friendly\u2014something valuable to say. You don\u2019t just leave having been entertained, and laughed, and teared-up at times; but you leave [with] something redeeming, and wholesome, and affirming\u2014great joy to work with these guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Alex, I know you\u2019re going to agree with this. I want to address the live audience here\u2014but also the ones who are listening. There were props\u2014there were things that showed up in the process that could only be attributed to God. Have you got one of those stories of how God provided something\u2014either the financing or maybe it was the actors and actresses that He provided?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, I think that on two occasions\u2014one was the little baby boy that plays Beck that\u2019s\u2014his name is Zion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were looking to cast that part up until the day we started filming\u2014the day before. And we were just like\u2014with the kids, it was so\u2014we were casting a lot of it in L.A. We just hadn\u2019t found this right kid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the other two roles we were trying to cast were the two little Hispanic twins. We said: \u201cLord, we need twins that are not just Hispanic, but half-Hispanic, that are two-and-a-half years old. We can\u2019t find them anywhere around.\u201d\u00a0 We were sitting at a restaurant with Kevin and\u2014.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, we\u2019re not in California. We\u2019re in Birmingham, Alabama. [Laughter] We are at a Cuban restaurant that\u2019s located inside of a carwash. [Laughter] So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In Birmingham?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>In Birmingham!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Called Miami Caf\u00e9. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>And literally, I\u2019m hyperventilating, at this point, going: \u201cOkay, we start shooting in about two weeks. Where are we going to find half-Hispanic twin two-year-old boys?\u201d\u00a0 And we just had this conversation that morning, and we finished lunch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk outside. I turn around\u2014and out\u2014come, stumbling, these two-year-old, half-Hispanic twin boys. Both of us had our jaws drop. We couldn\u2019t say anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>It was like d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. You saw the first one go by. You\u2019re like, \u201cOh, he\u2019s a cute kid.\u201d\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden\u2014like the same one came by, dressed the same way. I was like, \u201cKevin, go talk to them in a non-creepy way.\u201d\u00a0 He goes over: \u201cHello, son! How old are you?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cKevin, that\u2019s the creepiest way you could talk to them!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Then, their mom must have looked at me like I was insane because I\u2019m like, \u201cWe\u2019re shooting a movie,\u201d\u2014and we\u2019re in Birmingham, Alabama\u2014anyway, it all worked out. They were really cute and hilarious, but God totally just dropped them in our laps. It was amazing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>It really was. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool\u2014second story?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Then, the same thing happened with the little kid, Beck. We were looking to cast the right kid. We needed somebody who just <em>loved<\/em> the camera and just was real natural. We just didn\u2019t know anybody. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the night before, I was talking with my wife, Mandy. I said, \u201cYou know, your friend, Natalie, has really cute kids; and she\u2019s a photographer.\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cAsk her to bring their youngest over.\u201d\u00a0 She was like, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 We brought him over, and I filmed him with my iPhone\u00ae. He just loved the camera. We actually cast him that night and put him in front of the camera the next morning. He <em>stole<\/em> the show. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Next time, call me. We\u2019ve got 20 grandkids. We\u2019ve got plenty who love\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019ll come when we talk to your agent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the camera. [Laughter]\u00a0 Trust me, they love the camera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alex, let me ask you because you have been\u2014well, I\u2019m thinking back to when <em>Facing the Giants<\/em> came to theaters. What year was that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>2006. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That year, I think, that was the only Christian movie that came out in movie theaters the whole year, maybe. I mean, now in 2014, it\u2019s like every couple of weeks we are seeing movies that are either Christian films made by Christians or biblical films made by Hollywood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>And may they continue\u2014to honor God!\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What\u2019s going on in Hollywood with all of this Christian movie stuff?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Well, for one thing, I think they\u2019re acknowledging there is a large percentage of the population that loves God-honoring and family-honoring media. When we see it, we support it. As it gets better and better in quality, you\u2019re going to see a growing arena of films and stories that honor the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you remember, there was a time in the 40s and 50s\u2014you know <em>Ben Hur, The Robe, Ten Commandments<\/em>\u2014when these\u2014<em>Sergeant York<\/em>\u2014these types of movies were made on a pretty regular basis. I think we got off track for a couple of decades. As the tools become more available, and as we pour into the next generation of filmmakers that desire to honor the Lord, you\u2019re going to see more of these types of projects. I think the Lord\u2019s wired me to want to tell stories that draw people to a closer relationship with Him. So, that\u2019s what I would do. To some degree, He\u2019s allowing me a chance\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>\u2014to do that. Yes, and so extremely fulfilling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Kevin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, for me, I\u2014you know, the first film I produced was in 1998. What\u2019s happening this year\u2014in 2014\u2014was a dream of mine in 1998\u2014that there would be a dozen or so films that represent our core values, that honor God, and filmmakers that honor Him with their lives are pouring out their talent into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re all enjoying those films. We\u2019re taking away something that draws us closer to God and really humbles us. I think that\u2019s happening\u2014that dream\u2019s being fulfilled and realized now. And to answer your question, I\u2019m living that. I wouldn\u2019t do anything else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool. Andy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, well-said. I would definitely echo both of these guys. I think I\u2019m not a naturally very ambitious person. I worked for ESPN for years. I was happy as a camera man, working for ESPN; but in the process of us having this hobby that grew out of control\u2014I never thought that this would be the way we would earn our living\u2014it\u2019s just: \u201cWe have a hobby.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nice hobby, by the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>Yes, and in the process, men like Alex and Kevin challenged us that: \u201cHey, you have a voice too. Step off the sidelines and be willing to take that risk.\u201d\u00a0 I think that the privilege of being able to work around and with men of honor\u2014that have that passion to engage culture and not just snipe at it from the sidelines\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but to engage culture with entertainment and film, I just count myself very privileged. Every day, I have to pinch myself that this is what I get to do for a living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>And we all have a voice. That\u2019s how we support and make a statement that these are the types of films that we want to see because Hollywood listens to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And opening weekend\u2014this weekend is the right weekend to buy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to go out and be in theaters this weekend\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, May 9<sup>th<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because the opening weekend determines whether a movie is going to be successful or not; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s right. Opening weekend determines a lot\u2014more than I ever understood until about a couple of years ago. I mean, even though\u2014like for <em>Courageous<\/em>, I was actually filming another movie during the opening weekend. I bought tickets for my entire cast and crew, after we wrapped opening weekend, to go see it\u2014even though I was in it, and I had seen it 20 times\u2014but we need to support the movies when they come out in theaters opening weekend to make a statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you guys went back to California, with <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> edited, to show to the executives at Sony\u2014sometimes, I know, they look at Christian films and they don\u2019t necessarily get it. They had to get this film. What kind of feedback did you get from them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>It was pretty amazing. After spending 15 minutes before we showed the film, staring in the mirror in the bathroom, saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to throw up,\u201d [Laughter] it was wonderful to walk it in. It\u2019s a neat feeling when you feel like you\u2019re not asking something from the audience that you\u2019re not able to give back to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the cool thing about <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em> is\u2014I believe with it being on Mother\u2019s Day weekend and everything\u2014that this is an incredible gift that you can give the special woman in your life because it is entertaining. It\u2019s not a heavy burdensome movie. It\u2019s very much just something you\u2019re going to leave refreshed and affirmed about your family values. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we walked into Sony, I think it was really neat to see that: \u201cHey, this is different. This is something new.\u201d\u00a0 They kept saying: \u201cThis is a great crossover movie. There is nothing offensive in it to the audience, but there is something very relatable about parenting.\u201d\u00a0 Then, that gives us a really neat window to represent our worldview and values in that; but to do it, maybe, more subversively than ever before because it\u2019s something so disarming about being able to laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat in that room. One of the main executives that was in that room\u2014his mom was sitting right behind me. He brought his mom. She was cackling so loud that I could not hear the dialogue. I was like, \u201cWell, I think we\u2019re doing something right!\u201d\u00a0 So, it was good. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>To answer your question, we all\u2014about 20 of them saw the movie. We did it in a theater. When we gathered at the round table afterwards, the first comment that was said\u2014he goes: \u201cYou know, during the first ten minutes, my mouth, internally, was dropped. I couldn\u2019t believe it. And all I could think was:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201c\u2019\u2018Oh, please, don\u2019t let this fall apart!\u00a0 Oh, please, don\u2019t let this fall apart!\u2019\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand it didn\u2019t. You guys totally delivered.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s encouraging when you hear that kind of thing. Well, again, opens tonight in theaters all across the country. We\u2019re hoping that listeners will rally this weekend\u2014make it a big weekend for the movie\u2014not just for your guys\u2019 success\u2014but this really does make a statement to the industry about the kind of films that we want to see; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy: <\/strong>I believe that\u2014with Alex\u2014he\u2019d probably echo this\u2014is we\u2019ve\u2014the core of guys who are represented here and others that have come along the way\u2014we have kind of \u201cthe next man up\u201d kind of philosophy\u2014that we all are supportive of each other\u2019s voice. Early on, Alex and Stephen both encouraged us that we all have the same heartbeat \/ same mission\u2014different jurisdictions of audiences that we can reach. Let\u2019s cheer each other on. So, in supporting that, we\u2019re continuing to be able to engage culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Absolutely, I think our films in the past\u2014<em>Fireproof<\/em>, <em>Courageous\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014heavier on the drama side. We needed some laughter. So, <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014to be honest, it has a few moments of laughter; but it\u2019s a pretty heavy topic. I think it was needed; but at the same time, it\u2014we also need the laughter, as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should mention\u2014you and your brother are right at the beginning stages of filming your next movie; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct, yes.
