This could be a record-breaking week at the Lepine house because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m trying to think on\u2014\u201cWhat\u2019s the occasion?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been a week in our life when I\u2019ve gotten my wife to go to the movie theater twice in one week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But she\u2019s going twice this week?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Twice this week. She does not like movie\u2014she would rather stay home and watch it on a DVD, or Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or something, later. She doesn\u2019t like sitting in a seat where somebody else had their head on the back of that seat\u2014you know, right before her\u2014and where somebody had to clean the gunk off the floor. She just\u2014and it\u2019s too loud. She takes ear plugs to the movie theaters with her because, when the trailers come on and they\u2019re really loud, she just puts the ear plugs in her ears; alright? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But,<\/em> this week\u2014twice\u2014tomorrow night for the one-night only movie that we\u2019re going to talk about today, called <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>\u2014and then Friday night for the opening of <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>, which is going to be in theaters all across the country, starting this weekend. So, yes, I\u2019m going to get her twice to the theaters!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know why she\u2019s going to <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim Daly stars in it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Jim!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>It\u2019s great to be with you guys! I\u2019m feeling better already!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Are you in the movie? Do we see you in the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I\u2019m actually\u2014you know, no, I\u2019m not in it. [Laughter] How about that? I didn\u2019t think I needed to be. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our listeners need to understand why we would think you would be in the movie. Focus on the Family is producing a one-night release\u2014a theatrical release\u2014called <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>. It\u2019s about the state of the union of marriages and families. You\u2019ve given leadership to this. Is that really your passion to this\u2014is just calling the Christian community to wake up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, you know, I think that and more, Dennis. I think <em>Irreplaceable<\/em> started in our minds about three years ago. We started to think about what we needed to say in the culture about God\u2019s design for family because it seems like the culture wants to go in a lot of different directions when it comes to, you know, the definition of family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you think that\u2019s misstated or misunderstood, just try to talk about, \u201cWhat is family?\u201d out there in the culture. We felt it would be good to come along and do\u2014basically, it\u2019s a documentary. We have over 50 people\u2014experts, theologians, philosophers, man-on-the-street interviews, women-on-the-street interviews\u2014just saying, \u201cWhat is family?\u201d It\u2019s to ask the question and then, hopefully, answer that question through a DVD curriculum series called <em>The Family Project<\/em> that follows the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen the trailer for the film, and\u2014Australian guy who is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>New Zealander.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I couldn\u2019t pick out the accent to know whether it was Kiwi or Australian\u2014but he is going around in search of: \u201cWhat is at the essential core of this human institution, the family?\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Correct; right. What\u2019s so fascinating\u2014I know modern sociologists are talking about the fact that families, as we know them today, are a new phenomenon\u2014you know, a nuclear family of a husband, and wife, and children. I find that answer very interesting. I think that\u2019s probably been the case for five thousand years. You have to have a man and a woman to create a child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think that definition of family has been true for all these years. Now, you may have had more family members around to help raise that child; but generally speaking, I don\u2019t know of any other way to do it other than a man and a woman joining together\u2014physically, emotionally, spiritually\u2014and having a child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. Back about a month ago, I spoke at a speakers\u2019 series called the Kemmons Wilson Speaker Series in Memphis, Tennessee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s really interesting, Jim, to just listen to people\u2014of how they need to be brought up to date with what is taking place in the family\u2014and really, the state of the union\u2014in terms of, not just how bad things are, but how important the family is, not only for today, but for future generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely. That\u2019s perfectly-said, Dennis, because we\u2019re not talking down to anybody. We\u2019re trying to lift up God\u2019s design as the aspirational approach. I think He\u2019s the One who created the \u201cOwner\u2019s Manual\u201d; right? So, why don\u2019t we look at the Scripture to say, \u201cWhat does He expect of us in human relationship\u2014and the most intimate of relationships, our marriages\u2014and how we treat each other?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, when we follow those principles, generally, life is going to be a lot better than if we do not. I\u2019m feeling\u2014you know\u2014again, re-introducing the culture to what God has to say about family is\u2014the timing is perfect. I think the Lord\u2019s hand is right on this, and I\u2019m excited about May 6<sup>th<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s going to be a great night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I think people often think of a documentary\u2014they kind of expect it to be some sparks to fly\u2014that this is going to be challenging. You think of Michael Moore and the documentaries that he\u2019s made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014where he\u2019s going and mixing it up with people. You didn\u2019t take the approach that you wanted this to be really confrontational. You took a different approach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>We did. The reason is, again\u2014I think, when you go into the banking business\u2014and we\u2019ve all heard this analogy\u2014they teach how to know counterfeit money by teaching you real money. You handle it over, and over, and over again. Then, they slip in a counterfeit bill to see if you can identify it because it doesn\u2019t feel right. The texture\u2019s not right. It doesn\u2019t crumple correctly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was really our approach here: \u201cHow can we show people God\u2019s design for marriage and family in such a way that, when it\u2019s not represented, you know it\u2014not because somebody has to tell you. You just know it in your heart\u2014like Romans talks about\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s in our heart to know what is right. We just want to re-introduce, again, the culture to God\u2019s perspective when it comes to family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re coming at it from a biblical standpoint\u2014just to go back to the real thing, you know. Genesis, Chapter 2, makes it real clear. It says: \u201cTherefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found that most of the debate really goes back to what this passage talks about, right here: \u201cWho prescribed that it was a man and a woman and that they were to leave their parents, that they were to become one, and then live in intimacy with one another?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was God that prescribed it. One of the reasons why, I think, this debate today in the culture and in the workplace is so difficult is\u2014someone who has a world-view based on the Bible may be talking to someone who has a worldview that is based upon something other than the Bible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat makes it impossible to come to agreement because we\u2019re going to come at it from what the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, the reason that the culture is so hot in this one area when we talk about marriage is because\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014everybody\u2019s coming at it now with a different definition: \u201cYour family\u2019s not my family. Your truth is not my truth.\u201d So, we have to pull people back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the arguments that I often hear when I talk to people who don\u2019t understand a Christian perspective or don\u2019t embrace a Christian perspective on marriage\u2014they\u2019ll say, \u201cBut Jesus never said it.\u201d Well, actually, He did in Matthew 19. He says what you just read in Genesis. He repeats it: \u201cA man shall leave his mother and father and cling, or cleave, to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, again, I think that\u2019s brilliant\u2014that the Lord gave it to us once again as He walked on this earth\u2014to re-iterate the fact that: \u201cThis is the plan. This is the design.\u201d It\u2019s not meant to be mean-spirited, at all; in fact, quite the opposite. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s meant to give us joy, and give us peace, and hopefully harmony in our houses; right? I hope that that\u2019s the message that we get across.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We ought to explain to listeners that this movie is kind of a unique movie opportunity. It\u2019s not something that\u2019s coming out and then going to air six times on Friday and twelve times on Saturday. This is a one-time showing of this film on Tuesday night. So, if a listener is interested in going, they need to plan to be at their theater at the one showing that\u2019s available.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Correct. We\u2019re doing it that one night. Fathom is the group that brings all the theaters together\u2014like AMC, and Regal, and Carmike. It\u2019s over 700 theaters that will air it on that one night. We go into more detail about gender\u2014male and female\u2014mother and father, \u201cWhat does it mean to be one flesh?\u201d\u2014all of those attributes of family that we <em>know<\/em> in the Christian community\u2014but we want to make sure that the culture is aware of it, as well. It\u2019s a deeper dive\u2014there are 12 episodes in that curriculum. They run about 30 minutes each in a DVD format, with a leader\u2019s guide and the rest. We\u2019re excited about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You also talk about The GEN3 Promise of The GEN3 Connection for the future. Explain to our listeners how that fits into this curriculum and goes forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, you know, Dennis, here at FamilyLife, you have done such a great job with your marriage conferences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have been on the very point of the spear when it comes to the importance of marriage in the country. I thank you for that because, when you look at the silver bullet\u2014what our culture needs\u2014it\u2019s for, particularly, Christian men and women to stay committed in their marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, for Focus on the Family, what we\u2019re coming up with is something we call GEN3: \u201cLet\u2019s make a commitment, for three generations, that we will stay together. We will stay committed to our spouses. We\u2019ll stay committed to our families.\u201d We would like to see three generations of, literally, millions of people making that commitment\u2014to say: \u201cI will do it. I will not break the knot.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have a couple of sons who\u2014one has just become a teenager and the other one soon to be. How do you see them, ultimately, making this promise too? Are you going to guide them in that process? Is that how that happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014How do I see it, now?\u2014with great hope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. Well, there are a lot of listeners, though, who are right where you are. They\u2019re going, \u201cThat sounds good to me; but how would I prepare my children, as they move toward this thing called marriage, to do the same?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I think the key right there is modeling it well. I mean, children watch you, as a father and a mother, to see how you\u2019re doing it. If you want to really damage their opportunity to understand marriage and embrace it, just don\u2019t do it well. They\u2019ll watch it, and then they\u2019ll repeat your mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first thing we have to do is <em>model<\/em> it well for our children, and make sure that we\u2019re doing the right things. Men, open the door for your wife. Let your children see you treat your wife with respect, and the same is true for the wives. Make sure your children\u2014your daughter\u2014sees how you interact with your husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the other thing that we\u2019re missing is allowing ourselves to be human. I think, in the Christian community, we miss that\u2014the fact that God knows our humanity. He knows our hearts. He knows our sin. Let\u2019s teach our children to know that, and to relax in it, and then to seek God to be better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the things we\u2019re trying to teach our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we had a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> a number of years ago. They said something that I\u2019ve never forgotten\u2014it just stuck with me. It relates to what you\u2019re just saying. They said, \u201cMost parents are trying to teach their kids to be sin-avoiders and then sin-concealers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You avoid it, and if you do it, you don\u2019t tell Mom and Dad that you did it. They said, \u201cWe want to teach our kids to be sin-confessors and sin-repenters.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I thought: \u201cThat really is the picture. We need to teach our kids that there\u2019s grace. Then, we need to teach our kids that God also wants to transform us and make us different than we are today rather than just trying to say: \u2018Stay away. Stay away from\u2026. If you mess up, don\u2019t tell anybody; or they\u2019ll find out and think you\u2019re a bad person.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>And boy\u2014does that set us up for failure. You look at men today\u2014that\u2019s the state of the church. We, in the church, as men\u2014we\u2019re very reclusive. We don\u2019t talk to each other openly about where we\u2019re at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, that\u2019s dangerous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWouldn\u2019t it be nice to have three or four guys that you could go to and say: \u201cI am struggling\u2014I need to put Safe Eyes<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on my computer. Will you be my partner in that and let me show you what I\u2019m doing every day?\u201d We need that kind of accountability for each other in the Christian community because, folks, our marriages are no longer just ours. The world is watching! They want to see whether or not we <em>believe<\/em> what we say we believe is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim, I couldn\u2019t agree with you more\u2014that the model of a husband and a wife needs to be where we begin in reclaiming families in our country. I think you are absolutely on target. I think we also need to move\u2014in calling these couples who do begin to make their marriage work and work according to the Bible\u2014to begin to reach out to their friends, their networks, their neighbors, their community, and make an impact where they live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, today, the hope of the family can\u2019t rest upon an organization like Focus on the Family \/ FamilyLife because there\u2019s no way to build an organization big enough for the size of [the] problem that we have here in our country. Don\u2019t you believe we have to equip laymen to make a difference where they live, as well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely. I mean, if we could do that together, as a community of believers, I think the country will be far more better off. You see that in fathering, particularly. You look at prisons\u201485 percent of men in prison did not have a relationship with their dad. You want to take care of the prison over-population? We have to get dads engaged with their families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Irreplaceable<\/em> will have certainly a good section on that\u2014there\u2019s a whole section on fatherlessness. You\u2019ll hear from prisoners talking specifically about that pain. I think it\u2019s powerful. I think it\u2019s probably the most powerful section of the documentary, where they\u2019re talking about the lack of a father in their lives, and what they missed out on, and how the cultural forces took hold of them. They didn\u2019t have anybody to talk to about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of our teenagers are in that place today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And a lot of people don\u2019t realize what a plague we have in our culture today of fathers who are either there but not engaged, or fathers who create children and, frankly, leave\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and they don\u2019t fulfill any responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes; think about it. The US <em>leads<\/em> in that statistic. Forty percent of children born in this country are born without a dad in the home. That is horrible! We are reaping the whirlwind because of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m curious about a listener, who would think: \u201cYou know, we ought to go see the movie. I was thinking I\u2019d invite a friend from work or somebody from the neighborhood; but I\u2019m a little concerned that if I go and say, \u2018Do you want to go see a documentary from Focus on the Family about families?\u2019 that my neighbor\u2019s going to say, \u2018I don\u2019t know that we want to get preached at.\u2019\u201d You know, they\u2019re going to just suspect that that\u2019s going to be the case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow would you coach somebody to ask their next-door neighbor or a coworker to come with them to the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I think we\u2019ve produced it in such a way that it\u2019s an excellent opportunity to do that. It\u2019s not going to preach at them. It\u2019ll just talk about something bigger\u2014a bigger picture\u2014a bigger story going on that they can become part of so, when you talk about God\u2019s design for family, it captivates you in that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t have to be embarrassed about it. There\u2019s nothing in the movie\u2014in my opinion\u2014that should cause you any concern. I think, most importantly, you walk out\u2014when I watched the raw footage, and I saw it, I went, \u201cNow I understand the why.\u201d It\u2019s not the how-to tips\u2014how to improve your marriage\u2014that\u2019s not it. What it\u2019s giving you is the\u2014I\u2019d say\u2014the <em>desire<\/em> to want to honor God because of what you\u2019re hearing in that film. It gives you the <em>why <\/em>you want to be a good husband, the <em>why<\/em> you want to be a good wife, mother, and father. It\u2019s deeper than just the tips.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You think a 27-year-old is going to look at it and say, \u201cI agree with that,\u201d or are they going to find themselves debating what they see on the screen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Oh, I think, you know, it\u2019s hard to generalize. I think many will say, \u201cI will agree with most of that.\u201d There may be some edges of it that people go, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know,\u201d but that\u2019s the perfect place to start talking about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I\u2019d say: \u201cBring your neighbor. Then go have coffee and a nice piece of apple pie or something,\u201d but that\u2019s just me. But you know, I think it\u2019s a great way to begin dialogue. That\u2019s the goal. The goal is\u2014Dennis, I don\u2019t know how you feel about this; but right now, in the culture, we just tend to get in corners and shout at each other. Why not talk with each other?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>It would be far better. That\u2019s what I see in Paul when he would go on his missionary journeys. Folks, we are back there. People <em>do not know<\/em> who the Lord is\u2014and for us to get into the culture and say, \u201cHere is what God says about family,\u201d\u2014not with condemnation, not with a club, but in a way that <em>lifts you up<\/em> if you follow it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. Yes; and standing firm on the truth, and not apologizing one bit for it. What about the dialogue that can be created with your sons? You have an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old. Would you take them to this movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I would. There\u2019s nothing in there, really, that would be age-inappropriate. I think\u2014especially, at the 11\/12\/13 level\u2014I don\u2019t know below that\u2014that it would keep their interest\u2014but I do think, at a 13-age level, it will definitely create some interest for them to talk to you. It gives you an opportunity to teach them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the great thing\u2014why? We have to begin to equip our children, especially in the church, as to <em>why<\/em> marriage is good. You look, right now, at co-habitation in the 20-something decade. We have more people co-habiting now than getting married. So, they have to understand that\u2014even in the Christian church\u2014they have to understand <em>why<\/em> God wants us to follow it this way\u2014why we need to wait until marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let me tell you something\u2014we applaud what you guys are doing at Focus on the Family; and especially, in the release of this film because I just think\u2014Jim, I don\u2019t think we, as a Christian community, are clear on our set of beliefs. I think we\u2019re silent a lot of times when we need to be speaking up\u2014in love, with grace, and with respect. I think this movie is going to create a healthy dialogue, not only within the Christian community, but also within the culture\u2014that is desperately needed\u2014one that points people back to the blueprints of Scripture because this Book begins with a marriage in Genesis, and it ends with a marriage in the book of Revelation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and let me just remind listeners\u2014you have one shot to see this movie in theaters this week because it\u2019s Tuesday night. People <em>do not know<\/em> who the Lord is\u2014and for us to get into the culture and say, \u201cHere is what God says about family,\u201d\u2014not with condemnation, not with a club, but in a way that <em>lifts you up<\/em> if you follow it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, May 5<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll hear today from Focus on the Family President Jim Daly about a new attempt that ministry is making to try to engage in some civil dialogue. You\u2019ll hear about it today. This could be a record-breaking week at the Lepine house because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m trying to think on\u2014\u201cWhat\u2019s the occasion?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been a week in our life when I\u2019ve gotten my wife to go to the movie theater twice in one week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But she\u2019s going twice this week?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Twice this week. She does not like movie\u2014she would rather stay home and watch it on a DVD, or Netflix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or something, later. She doesn\u2019t like sitting in a seat where somebody else had their head on the back of that seat\u2014you know, right before her\u2014and where somebody had to clean the gunk off the floor. She just\u2014and it\u2019s too loud. She takes ear plugs to the movie theaters with her because, when the trailers come on and they\u2019re really loud, she just puts the ear plugs in her ears; alright? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But,<\/em> this week\u2014twice\u2014tomorrow night for the one-night only movie that we\u2019re going to talk about today, called <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>\u2014and then Friday night for the opening of <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out<\/em>, which is going to be in theaters all across the country, starting this weekend. So, yes, I\u2019m going to get her twice to the theaters!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know why she\u2019s going to <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim Daly stars in it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Jim!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>It\u2019s great to be with you guys! I\u2019m feeling better already!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Are you in the movie? Do we see you in the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I\u2019m actually\u2014you know, no, I\u2019m not in it. [Laughter] How about that? I didn\u2019t think I needed to be. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our listeners need to understand why we would think you would be in the movie. Focus on the Family is producing a one-night release\u2014a theatrical release\u2014called <em>Irreplaceable<\/em>. It\u2019s about the state of the union of marriages and families. You\u2019ve given leadership to this. Is that really your passion to this\u2014is just calling the Christian community to wake up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, you know, I think that and more, Dennis. I think <em>Irreplaceable<\/em> started in our minds about three years ago. We started to think about what we needed to say in the culture about God\u2019s design for family because it seems like the culture wants to go in a lot of different directions when it comes to, you know, the definition of family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you think that\u2019s misstated or misunderstood, just try to talk about, \u201cWhat is family?\u201d out there in the culture. We felt it would be good to come along and do\u2014basically, it\u2019s a documentary. We have over 50 people\u2014experts, theologians, philosophers, man-on-the-street interviews, women-on-the-street interviews\u2014just saying, \u201cWhat is family?\u201d It\u2019s to ask the question and then, hopefully, answer that question through a DVD curriculum series called <em>The Family Project<\/em> that follows the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen the trailer for the film, and\u2014Australian guy who is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>New Zealander.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I couldn\u2019t pick out the accent to know whether it was Kiwi or Australian\u2014but he is going around in search of: \u201cWhat is at the essential core of this human institution, the family?\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Correct; right. What\u2019s so fascinating\u2014I know modern sociologists are talking about the fact that families, as we know them today, are a new phenomenon\u2014you know, a nuclear family of a husband, and wife, and children. I find that answer very interesting. I think that\u2019s probably been the case for five thousand years. You have to have a man and a woman to create a child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think that definition of family has been true for all these years. Now, you may have had more family members around to help raise that child; but generally speaking, I don\u2019t know of any other way to do it other than a man and a woman joining together\u2014physically, emotionally, spiritually\u2014and having a child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. Back about a month ago, I spoke at a speakers\u2019 series called the Kemmons Wilson Speaker Series in Memphis, Tennessee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s really interesting, Jim, to just listen to people\u2014of how they need to be brought up to date with what is taking place in the family\u2014and really, the state of the union\u2014in terms of, not just how bad things are, but how important the family is, not only for today, but for future generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely. That\u2019s perfectly-said, Dennis, because we\u2019re not talking down to anybody. We\u2019re trying to lift up God\u2019s design as the aspirational approach. I think He\u2019s the One who created the \u201cOwner\u2019s Manual\u201d; right? So, why don\u2019t we look at the Scripture to say, \u201cWhat does He expect of us in human relationship\u2014and the most intimate of relationships, our marriages\u2014and how we treat each other?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, when we follow those principles, generally, life is going to be a lot better than if we do not. I\u2019m feeling\u2014you know\u2014again, re-introducing the culture to what God has to say about family is\u2014the timing is perfect. I think the Lord\u2019s hand is right on this, and I\u2019m excited about May 6<sup>th<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s going to be a great night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I think people often think of a documentary\u2014they kind of expect it to be some sparks to fly\u2014that this is going to be challenging. You think of Michael Moore and the documentaries that he\u2019s made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014where he\u2019s going and mixing it up with people. You didn\u2019t take the approach that you wanted this to be really confrontational. You took a different approach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>We did. The reason is, again\u2014I think, when you go into the banking business\u2014and we\u2019ve all heard this analogy\u2014they teach how to know counterfeit money by teaching you real money. You handle it over, and over, and over again. Then, they slip in a counterfeit bill to see if you can identify it because it doesn\u2019t feel right. The texture\u2019s not right. It doesn\u2019t crumple correctly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was really our approach here: \u201cHow can we show people God\u2019s design for marriage and family in such a way that, when it\u2019s not represented, you know it\u2014not because somebody has to tell you. You just know it in your heart\u2014like Romans talks about\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s in our heart to know what is right. We just want to re-introduce, again, the culture to God\u2019s perspective when it comes to family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re coming at it from a biblical standpoint\u2014just to go back to the real thing, you know. Genesis, Chapter 2, makes it real clear. It says: \u201cTherefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found that most of the debate really goes back to what this passage talks about, right here: \u201cWho prescribed that it was a man and a woman and that they were to leave their parents, that they were to become one, and then live in intimacy with one another?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was God that prescribed it. One of the reasons why, I think, this debate today in the culture and in the workplace is so difficult is\u2014someone who has a world-view based on the Bible may be talking to someone who has a worldview that is based upon something other than the Bible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat makes it impossible to come to agreement because we\u2019re going to come at it from what the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, the reason that the culture is so hot in this one area when we talk about marriage is because\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014everybody\u2019s coming at it now with a different definition: \u201cYour family\u2019s not my family. Your truth is not my truth.\u201d So, we have to pull people back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the arguments that I often hear when I talk to people who don\u2019t understand a Christian perspective or don\u2019t embrace a Christian perspective on marriage\u2014they\u2019ll say, \u201cBut Jesus never said it.\u201d Well, actually, He did in Matthew 19. He says what you just read in Genesis. He repeats it: \u201cA man shall leave his mother and father and cling, or cleave, to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, again, I think that\u2019s brilliant\u2014that the Lord gave it to us once again as He walked on this earth\u2014to re-iterate the fact that: \u201cThis is the plan. This is the design.\u201d It\u2019s not meant to be mean-spirited, at all; in fact, quite the opposite. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s meant to give us joy, and give us peace, and hopefully harmony in our houses; right? I hope that that\u2019s the message that we get across.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We ought to explain to listeners that this movie is kind of a unique movie opportunity. It\u2019s not something that\u2019s coming out and then going to air six times on Friday and twelve times on Saturday. This is a one-time showing of this film on Tuesday night. So, if a listener is interested in going, they need to plan to be at their theater at the one showing that\u2019s available.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Correct. We\u2019re excited about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You also talk about The GEN3 Promise of The GEN3 Connection for the future. Explain to our listeners how that fits into this curriculum and goes forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, you know, Dennis, here at FamilyLife, you have done such a great job with your marriage conferences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have been on the very point of the spear when it comes to the importance of marriage in the country. I thank you for that because, when you look at the silver bullet\u2014what our culture needs\u2014it\u2019s for, particularly, Christian men and women to stay committed in their marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, for Focus on the Family, what we\u2019re coming up with is something we call GEN3: \u201cLet\u2019s make a commitment, for three generations, that we will stay together. We will stay committed to our spouses. We\u2019ll stay committed to our families.\u201d We would like to see three generations of, literally, millions of people making that commitment\u2014to say: \u201cI will do it. I will not break the knot.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have a couple of sons who\u2014one has just become a teenager and the other one soon to be. How do you see them, ultimately, making this promise too? Are you going to guide them in that process? Is that how that happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014How do I see it, now?\u2014with great hope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Exactly. Well, there are a lot of listeners, though, who are right where you are. They\u2019re going, \u201cThat sounds good to me; but how would I prepare my children, as they move toward this thing called marriage, to do the same?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I think the key right there is modeling it well. I mean, children watch you, as a father and a mother, to see how you\u2019re doing it. If you want to really damage their opportunity to understand marriage and embrace it, just don\u2019t do it well. They\u2019ll watch it, and then they\u2019ll repeat your mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first thing we have to do is <em>model<\/em> it well for our children, and make sure that we\u2019re doing the right things. Men, open the door for your wife. Let your children see you treat your wife with respect, and the same is true for the wives. Make sure your children\u2014your daughter\u2014sees how you interact with your husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the other thing that we\u2019re missing is allowing ourselves to be human. I think, in the Christian community, we miss that\u2014the fact that God knows our humanity. He knows our hearts. He knows our sin. Let\u2019s teach our children to know that, and to relax in it, and then to seek God to be better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the things we\u2019re trying to teach our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we had a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> a number of years ago. They said something that I\u2019ve never forgotten\u2014it just stuck with me. It relates to what you\u2019re just saying. They said, \u201cMost parents are trying to teach their kids to be sin-avoiders and then sin-concealers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You avoid it, and if you do it, you don\u2019t tell Mom and Dad that you did it. They said, \u201cWe want to teach our kids to be sin-confessors and sin-repenters.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I thought: \u201cThat really is the picture. We need to teach our kids that there\u2019s grace. Then, we need to teach our kids that God also wants to transform us and make us different than we are today rather than just trying to say: \u2018Stay away. Stay away from\u2026. If you mess up, don\u2019t tell anybody; or they\u2019ll find out and think you\u2019re a bad person.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>And boy\u2014does that set us up for failure. You look at men today\u2014that\u2019s the state of the church. We, in the church, as men\u2014we\u2019re very reclusive. We don\u2019t talk to each other openly about where we\u2019re at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes, that\u2019s dangerous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWouldn\u2019t it be nice to have three or four guys that you could go to and say: \u201cI am struggling\u2014I need to put Safe Eyes<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on my computer. Will you be my partner in that and let me show you what I\u2019m doing every day?\u201d We need that kind of accountability for each other in the Christian community because, folks, our marriages are no longer just ours. The world is watching! They want to see whether or not we <em>believe<\/em> what we say we believe is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Jim, I couldn\u2019t agree with you more\u2014that the model of a husband and a wife needs to be where we begin in reclaiming families in our country. I think you are absolutely on target. I think we also need to move\u2014in calling these couples who do begin to make their marriage work and work according to the Bible\u2014to begin to reach out to their friends, their networks, their neighbors, their community, and make an impact where they live. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, today, the hope of the family can\u2019t rest upon an organization like Focus on the Family \/ FamilyLife because there\u2019s no way to build an organization big enough for the size of [the] problem that we have here in our country. Don\u2019t you believe we have to equip laymen to make a difference where they live, as well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Absolutely. I mean, if we could do that together, as a community of believers, I think the country will be far more better off. You see that in fathering, particularly. You look at prisons\u201485 percent of men in prison did not have a relationship with their dad. You want to take care of the prison over-population? We have to get dads engaged with their families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Irreplaceable<\/em> will have certainly a good section on that\u2014there\u2019s a whole section on fatherlessness. You\u2019ll hear from prisoners talking specifically about that pain. I think it\u2019s powerful. I think it\u2019s probably the most powerful section of the documentary, where they\u2019re talking about the lack of a father in their lives, and what they missed out on, and how the cultural forces took hold of them. They didn\u2019t have anybody to talk to about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of our teenagers are in that place today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And a lot of people don\u2019t realize what a plague we have in our culture today of fathers who are either there but not engaged, or fathers who create children and, frankly, leave\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and they don\u2019t fulfill any responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Yes; think about it. The US <em>leads<\/em> in that statistic. Forty percent of children born in this country are born without a dad in the home. That is horrible! We are reaping the whirlwind because of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m curious about a listener, who would think: \u201cYou know, we ought to go see the movie. I was thinking I\u2019d invite a friend from work or somebody from the neighborhood; but I\u2019m a little concerned that if I go and say, \u2018Do you want to go see a documentary from Focus on the Family about families?\u2019 that my neighbor\u2019s going to say, \u2018I don\u2019t know that we want to get preached at.\u2019\u201d You know, they\u2019re going to just suspect that that\u2019s going to be the case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow would you coach somebody to ask their next-door neighbor or a coworker to come with them to the movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Well, I think we\u2019ve produced it in such a way that it\u2019s an excellent opportunity to do that. It\u2019s not going to preach at them. It\u2019ll just talk about something bigger\u2014a bigger picture\u2014a bigger story going on that they can become part of so, when you talk about God\u2019s design for family, it captivates you in that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t have to be embarrassed about it. There\u2019s nothing in the movie\u2014in my opinion\u2014that should cause you any concern. I think, most importantly, you walk out\u2014when I watched the raw footage, and I saw it, I went, \u201cNow I understand the why.\u201d It\u2019s not the how-to tips\u2014how to improve your marriage\u2014that\u2019s not it. What it\u2019s giving you is the\u2014I\u2019d say\u2014the <em>desire<\/em> to want to honor God because of what you\u2019re hearing in that film. It gives you the <em>why <\/em>you want to be a good husband, the <em>why<\/em> you want to be a good wife, mother, and father. It\u2019s deeper than just the tips.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You think a 27-year-old is going to look at it and say, \u201cI agree with that,\u201d or are they going to find themselves debating what they see on the screen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>Oh, I think, you know, it\u2019s hard to generalize. I think many will say, \u201cI will agree with most of that.\u201d There may be some edges of it that people go, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know,\u201d but that\u2019s the perfect place to start talking about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I\u2019d say: \u201cBring your neighbor. Then go have coffee and a nice piece of apple pie or something,\u201d but that\u2019s just me. But you know, I think it\u2019s a great way to begin dialogue. That\u2019s the goal. The goal is\u2014Dennis, I don\u2019t know how you feel about this; but right now, in the culture, we just tend to get in corners and shout at each other. Why not talk with each other?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>It would be far better. That\u2019s what I see in Paul when he would go on his missionary journeys. Folks, we are back there. People <em>do not know<\/em> who the Lord is\u2014and for us to get into the culture and say, \u201cHere is what God says about family,\u201d\u2014not with condemnation, not with a club, but in a way that <em>lifts you up<\/em> if you follow it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. Yes; and standing firm on the truth, and not apologizing one bit for it. What about the dialogue that can be created with your sons? You have an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old. Would you take them to this movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim: <\/strong>I would. There\u2019s nothing in there, really, that would be age-inappropriate. I think\u2014especially, at the 11\/12\/13 level\u2014I don\u2019t know below that\u2014that it would keep their interest\u2014but I do think, at a 13-age level, it will definitely create some interest for them to talk to you. It gives you an opportunity to teach them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the great thing\u2014why? We have to begin to equip our children, especially in the church, as to <em>why<\/em> marriage is good. You look, right now, at co-habitation in the 20-something decade. We have more people co-habiting now than getting married. So, they have to understand that\u2014even in the Christian church\u2014they have to understand <em>why<\/em> God wants us to follow it this way\u2014why we need to wait until marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let me tell you something\u2014we applaud what you guys are doing at Focus on the Family; and especially, in the release of this film because I just think\u2014Jim, I don\u2019t think we, as a Christian community, are clear on our set of beliefs. I think we\u2019re silent a lot of times when we need to be speaking up\u2014in love, with grace, and with respect. I think this movie is going to create a healthy dialogue, not only within the Christian community, but also within the culture\u2014that is desperately needed\u2014one that points people back to the blueprints of Scripture because this Book begins with a marriage in Genesis, and it ends with a marriage in the book of Revelation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and let me just remind listeners\u2014you have one shot to see this movie in theaters this week because it\u2019s Tuesday night.
