There was no romance\u2014little feelings for one another. There was a lot of pain. All we had was this Book, and the God of this Book, and a commitment to Him that we had made in 1972, on September 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, that said, \u201c\u2026\u2019til death do us part.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, April 11<sup>th<\/sup>. You know, it\u2019s been exciting this week. We\u2019ve had a lot of our listeners who have been coming to a new website that we\u2019ve got up called IStillDo.com. They are hearing about these events that are coming up in August and October. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know spring has just kind of sprung. People are thinking, \u201cAugust and October sounds like it\u2019s a long way away\u201d; but folks are pretty excited about the one-day event for marriage that we\u2019re going to be hosting in Chicago, on August 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, at the Allstate Arena; in Portland, on August 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, at the Moda Center; and in Washington, DC, on October 4<sup>th<\/sup>, at the Verizon Center downtown\u2014that event is going to be a worldwide simulcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are standing up to say: \u201cMarriage is a good thing.\u201d We think we need to celebrate that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People are expressing interest about it in increasing numbers. And Bob, I think it is proving what I feel like is true across the country\u2014that there are a number of folks who really do want to stand up and be counted on behalf of how God designed marriage and the family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what this one-day event is\u2014it\u2019s really all about. It\u2019s about saying: \u201cMarriage matters to us. Marriage matters to our culture\u2014it matters in our world. It\u2019s a part of God\u2019s design, and it\u2019s something to be celebrated.\u201d\u00a0 And there really is great delight when a husband and a wife say, \u201cI do,\u201d and when they say, \u201cI still do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you\u2019re right, Bob. In fact, what we\u2019re trying to do is give people a chance to come join together\u2014much as we did about a dozen years ago\u2014and just come, and sing some great worship hymns, and have a lot of fun\u2014a lot of entertainment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but hear some good biblical teaching on marriage and family\u2014some practical projects that you\u2019ll be able to take home and that will equip you as you fulfill your marriage promise.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Bob, I think just have the satisfaction of knowing that your voice, along with tens of thousands of others, is going to collectively be heard and seen in that arena and beyond that arena. I think it\u2019s going to spill over to our communities after these events are over. I want to see a time when we start a national dialogue about what Christian marriage is all about and how our God designed it in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, certainly, there has been a political dialogue on this subject. We want to have a spiritual dialogue on this subject and say,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that novel?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cLet\u2019s look at what the Bible has to say rather than just your opinion versus my opinion.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019ll tell you\u2014folks are getting excited about this. Some of those are pretty funny, as well. This is a message that you shared when we were with tens of thousands of people in an arena, a number of years ago, talking about why marriage really does matter. Here are Dennis and Barbara Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Psalm 127:1 says, \u201cUnless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it.\u201d\u00a0 Is that a picture of you right now?\u00a0 Are you at a crossroads?\u00a0 Have you come here seeking hope and help?\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 We know where that hope is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone once asked the question: \u201cIs there anything more beautiful in life than a young boy and girl, clasping clean hands and a pure heart, in the path of marriage?\u00a0 Can there be anything more beautiful than young love?\u201d\u00a0 The answer is given: \u201cYes, there is a more beautiful thing. It\u2019s the spectacle of an old man and an old woman finishing their journey together on that path. Their hands are gnarled,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but still clasped. Their faces are seamed, but still radiant. Their hearts physically tired and bowed, but still strong in love and devotion for one another. Yes, there is a more beautiful thing than young love\u2014old love.\u201d\u00a0 What\u2019s going to make the difference in your life and your marriage, going the distance, \u2018till death do you part?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe year was 1976. Barbara and I had two children under two years of age. We had just moved into a house and had changed jobs for the fifth time in six years\u2014five moves, new friends, new churches. We moved into a house\u2014where we\u2019d been cheated out of several thousand dollars\u2014dirty and filthy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the midst of cleaning up that house, the phone call rang on Sunday morning. It was my brother\u2019s voice over the phone. His voice was chilling over that telephone, saying that my dad had died. After that, my son was diagnosed with a need for surgery; and so, at one year of age, we took him for surgery. Not more than ten days after we got him home from surgery, the phone rang. My brother had had an apparent heart attack, and they needed me to go back and run the family propane business in the midst of the worst winter in Midwest history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA couple of months later, I was late for work. For some reason that day, I hadn\u2019t gone to work\u2014stayed home and lingered a little longer. All of a sudden, Barbara stuck her head down between her knees and said her heart was racing fast. We called the Emergency\u2014the ambulance rushed over\u2014got her. We ran to the hospital, where she was entered into the cardiac unit and registered more than 300 beats a minute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer heart continued to race, uncontrollably, all day. At noon, her lungs began to fill up with fluid. The doctors did not know what to do. All afternoon, with no friends in that waiting area, I prayed. At exactly four o\u2019clock, the doctors had just left to go stop her heart with electric shock; but they didn\u2019t need to because God put His finger back on the heart problem. She didn\u2019t die. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the next few\u2014for the next few months, she had extra heartbeats. I had extra heartbeats. The kids had extra heartbeats. Then, we found out, at the end of 30 days, that she was pregnant. We wondered: \u201cWould she be able to give birth to a healthy son?\u201d\u00a0 Some nine months later, she gave birth to Samuel, which means \u201cBecause we asked of God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want to tell you\u2014in the 12- to 18-month time period that I\u2019ve just described\u2014where we had financial crisis, emotional crisis, physical crisis\u2014all those issues swirling around our lives\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014bombarding our union \/ our marriage\u2014there was no romance \/ little feelings for one another. There was a lot of pain. All we had was this Book, and the God of this Book, and a commitment to Him that we had made in 1972, on September 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, that said, \u201c\u2019til death do us part.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of you, here, are in the middle of pain. Your marriage has come through enormous trial, and you are in need of reducing your life back to the basics and finding life from the life-giver, Jesus Christ. Everybody in this auditorium today has a choice. You\u2019re going to leave here with a choice. Jesus spoke of this choice in a parable in the Sermon on the Mount. He said this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Matthew 7, verses 24 and following: \u201cTherefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came and the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and yet, it did not fall because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. And the rain came and the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and it fell,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cwith a great crash.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInteresting parable\u2014two foundations\u2014sand and rock\u2014two builders of homes\u2014foolish and wise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwo responses: disobedience to Jesus\u2019 words and obedience. Two legacies\u2014one whose house ended with a crash and great was its fall\u2014another one that withstood the floods and was permanent \/ resilient\u2014the strength of a nation. One common ingredient to both houses\u2014rain, floods and wind. The question is: \u201cWhat kind of foundation will <em>you<\/em> build your house on?\u201d\u00a0 A better question might be: \u201cIf your life ended right now, what would they say was your legacy?\u201d\u00a0 Would it be that of strength or that of destruction and despair?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our remaining time,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I want to give you five ways that your marriage can go the distance\u2014five ways to live together in a satisfying relationship\u2014\u201c\u2019til death do you part.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Pray together every day, as a couple. Tonight, make it the beginning, for the rest of your married life, that you covenant together, as a couple, that you will pray together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second way to divorce-proof your marriage and to make your marriage \u201cuntil death do us part\u201d is to repent from divorce. Malachi, Chapter 2, verse 16\u2014God does not stutter\u2014He says, \u201cFor I hate divorce.\u201d\u00a0 God hates it. What should we think of it?\u00a0 And so I challenge you\u2014as you leave here today: \u201cWould you repent, with me, from divorce?\u201d\u00a0 We will never see Christian marriages be strong, and be the beacon and the lighthouse that it needs to be until you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s not us, on the podium\u2014until you, in the church pew, stand up and fight for families, and go and do battle on behalf of someone who wants to just get out of marriage!\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 It\u2019s too easy to get a divorce today!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Pray together every night. Number two: Repent from divorce. Number three: I want to challenge you to sign the marriage covenant that you\u2019re about to receive as you leave the door in a few moments. I want to challenge you to hang it in your home. Marriage is one man \/ one woman in a covenant relationship with their God for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth thing: Do what you promised. Be faithful. In a word\u2014persevere\u2014just be faithful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFifth: I want to challenge you\u2014number five\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to equip other couples to keep their marriage covenants. Every one of us, as couples in this arena, needs a mission. I charge you, in the presence of God: \u201cRedeem your neighborhoods. Redeem your communities for Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 You are a warrior, not merely on behalf of your family, but you are a protector of the families of your community. May God\u2019s favor be upon you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor 22 years, Robertson McQuilkin served as the president of Columbia Bible College and Seminary. In 1984, his wife\u2014Muriel\u2019s health began to deteriorate with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. She began to lose her basic speech skills. She couldn\u2019t reason, feed herself, [or] clothe herself. She would wander away from their home and get lost in the neighborhood. And so in 1990,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Robertson McQuilkin, as the President of Columbia Bible College and Seminary, stood before the student body, announcing his resignation, as President, to go home and care for his wife of more than 40 years, Muriel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have obtained an audio of that resignation speech\u2014just about 110 seconds\u2019 worth. I want you to listen and read the caption because these words, I believe, are one of the most powerful, profound, living illustrations of being a covenant-keeper that you and I will ever have the privilege of hearing and witnessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Robertson\u2019s Resignation Speech]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robertson: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t, in my life, experienced easy decision-making on major decisions; but one of the simplest and clearest decisions I\u2019ve had to make is this one because circumstances dictated it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMuriel, now, in the last couple of months seems to be almost happy when with me and almost never happy when not with me. In fact, she seems to feel trapped\u2014becomes very fearful, sometimes almost terror. And when she can\u2019t get to me, there can be anger and distress; but when I\u2019m with her, she\u2019s happy and contented. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I must be with her at all times; and, you see, it\u2019s not only that I promised, \u201cin sickness and in health\u2026\u2018til death do us part\u201d\u2014and I\u2019m a man of my word\u2014but as I have said\u2014I don\u2019t know with this group, but I have said publicly\u2014\u201cIt\u2019s the only fair thing. She sacrificed for me for 40 years to make my life possible.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I cared for her for 40 years, I\u2019d still be in debt. However, there\u2019s much more. It\u2019s not that I <em>have to<\/em>, but I <em>get to<\/em>. I love her very dearly, and you can tell it\u2019s not easy to talk about. She\u2019s a delight. What a great honor to care for such a wonderful person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Resignation Speech]\u00a0 [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I was standing in the laundry room, and I was ironing. [Emotion in voice] Dennis called\u2014[I\u2019m sorry] \u2014he called on the phone, and he read me that story. I was watering the clothes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like I\u2019m watering my notes, right now. And he said, \u201cShould I tell that story?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI just have one question. I need to know\u2014will you love me like that?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s not a woman in this room who doesn\u2019t want to know the answer to that question. There\u2019s not a woman in this room who doesn\u2019t need to hear from her husband, \u201cYes, I will love you like that.\u201d\u00a0 That is a demonstration of commitment and of covenant. It\u2019s what we were made for. It\u2019s what we long for. It\u2019s what we need. God built it in us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a powerful moment from one of the \u201cI Still Do\u201d marriage celebrations; and it was awfully quiet in that auditorium.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s articulating what every woman wants to know: \u201cIf that happened to me\u2014if I became ill \/ if I had a problem\u2014will you, as my husband, lay down your life on my behalf and love me like that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s unfortunate\u2014in our day and age\u2014that that has become such a central question in the institution of marriage; but it has. You know, it\u2019s been exciting this week. We\u2019ve had a lot of our listeners who have been coming to a new website that we\u2019ve got up called IStillDo.com. They are hearing about these events that are coming up in August and October. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know spring has just kind of sprung. People are thinking, \u201cAugust and October sounds like it\u2019s a long way away\u201d; but folks are pretty excited about the one-day event for marriage that we\u2019re going to be hosting in Chicago, on August 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, at the Allstate Arena; in Portland, on August 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, at the Moda Center; and in Washington, DC, on October 4<sup>th<\/sup>, at the Verizon Center downtown\u2014that event is going to be a worldwide simulcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are standing up to say: \u201cMarriage is a good thing.\u201d We think we need to celebrate that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People are expressing interest about it in increasing numbers. And Bob, I think it is proving what I feel like is true across the country\u2014that there are a number of folks who really do want to stand up and be counted on behalf of how God designed marriage and the family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s what this one-day event is\u2014it\u2019s really all about. It\u2019s about saying: \u201cMarriage matters to us. Marriage matters to our culture\u2014it matters in our world. It\u2019s a part of God\u2019s design, and it\u2019s something to be celebrated.\u201d\u00a0 And there really is great delight when a husband and a wife say, \u201cI do,\u201d and when they say, \u201cI still do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you\u2019re right, Bob. In fact, what we\u2019re trying to do is give people a chance to come join together\u2014much as we did about a dozen years ago\u2014and just come, and sing some great worship hymns, and have a lot of fun\u2014a lot of entertainment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but hear some good biblical teaching on marriage and family\u2014some practical projects that you\u2019ll be able to take home and that will equip you as you fulfill your marriage promise.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Bob, I think just have the satisfaction of knowing that your voice, along with tens of thousands of others, is going to collectively be heard and seen in that arena and beyond that arena. I think it\u2019s going to spill over to our communities after these events are over. I want to see a time when we start a national dialogue about what Christian marriage is all about and how our God designed it in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, certainly, there has been a political dialogue on this subject. We want to have a spiritual dialogue on this subject and say,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that novel?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cLet\u2019s look at what the Bible has to say rather than just your opinion versus my opinion.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019ll tell you\u2014folks are getting excited about this. It\u2019s the spectacle of an old man and an old woman finishing their journey together on that path. Barbara and I had two children under two years of age. We had just moved into a house and had changed jobs for the fifth time in six years\u2014five moves, new friends, new churches. We moved into a house\u2014where we\u2019d been cheated out of several thousand dollars\u2014dirty and filthy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the midst of cleaning up that house, the phone call rang on Sunday morning. It was my brother\u2019s voice over the phone. His voice was chilling over that telephone, saying that my dad had died. After that, my son was diagnosed with a need for surgery; and so, at one year of age, we took him for surgery. Not more than ten days after we got him home from surgery, the phone rang. My brother had had an apparent heart attack, and they needed me to go back and run the family propane business in the midst of the worst winter in Midwest history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA couple of months later, I was late for work. For some reason that day, I hadn\u2019t gone to work\u2014stayed home and lingered a little longer. All of a sudden, Barbara stuck her head down between her knees and said her heart was racing fast. We called the Emergency\u2014the ambulance rushed over\u2014got her. We ran to the hospital, where she was entered into the cardiac unit and registered more than 300 beats a minute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer heart continued to race, uncontrollably, all day. At noon, her lungs began to fill up with fluid. The doctors did not know what to do. All afternoon, with no friends in that waiting area, I prayed. At exactly four o\u2019clock, the doctors had just left to go stop her heart with electric shock; but they didn\u2019t need to because God put His finger back on the heart problem. She didn\u2019t die. [Applause]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the next few\u2014for the next few months, she had extra heartbeats. I had extra heartbeats. The kids had extra heartbeats. Then, we found out, at the end of 30 days, that she was pregnant. We wondered: \u201cWould she be able to give birth to a healthy son?\u201d\u00a0 Some nine months later, she gave birth to Samuel, which means \u201cBecause we asked of God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want to tell you\u2014in the 12- to 18-month time period that I\u2019ve just described\u2014where we had financial crisis, emotional crisis, physical crisis\u2014all those issues swirling around our lives\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014bombarding our union \/ our marriage\u2014there was no romance \/ little feelings for one another. There was a lot of pain. All we had was this Book, and the God of this Book, and a commitment to Him that we had made in 1972, on September 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, that said, \u201c\u2019til death do us part.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of you, here, are in the middle of pain. Your marriage has come through enormous trial, and you are in need of reducing your life back to the basics and finding life from the life-giver, Jesus Christ. Everybody in this auditorium today has a choice. You\u2019re going to leave here with a choice. Jesus spoke of this choice in a parable in the Sermon on the Mount. He said this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Matthew 7, verses 24 and following: \u201cTherefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came and the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and yet, it did not fall because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. And the rain came and the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and it fell,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cwith a great crash.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInteresting parable\u2014two foundations\u2014sand and rock\u2014two builders of homes\u2014foolish and wise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwo responses: disobedience to Jesus\u2019 words and obedience. Two legacies\u2014one whose house ended with a crash and great was its fall\u2014another one that withstood the floods and was permanent \/ resilient\u2014the strength of a nation. One common ingredient to both houses\u2014rain, floods and wind. The question is: \u201cWhat kind of foundation will <em>you<\/em> build your house on?\u201d\u00a0 A better question might be: \u201cIf your life ended right now, what would they say was your legacy?\u201d\u00a0 Would it be that of strength or that of destruction and despair?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our remaining time,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I want to give you five ways that your marriage can go the distance\u2014five ways to live together in a satisfying relationship\u2014\u201c\u2019til death do you part.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Pray together every day, as a couple. Tonight, make it the beginning, for the rest of your married life, that you covenant together, as a couple, that you will pray together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second way to divorce-proof your marriage and to make your marriage \u201cuntil death do us part\u201d is to repent from divorce. Malachi, Chapter 2, verse 16\u2014God does not stutter\u2014He says, \u201cFor I hate divorce.\u201d\u00a0 God hates it. What should we think of it?\u00a0 And so I challenge you\u2014as you leave here today: \u201cWould you repent, with me, from divorce?\u201d\u00a0 We will never see Christian marriages be strong, and be the beacon and the lighthouse that it needs to be until you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s not us, on the podium\u2014until you, in the church pew, stand up and fight for families, and go and do battle on behalf of someone who wants to just get out of marriage!\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 It\u2019s too easy to get a divorce today!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: Pray together every night. Number two: Repent from divorce. Number three: I want to challenge you to sign the marriage covenant that you\u2019re about to receive as you leave the door in a few moments. I want to challenge you to hang it in your home. Marriage is one man \/ one woman in a covenant relationship with their God for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth thing: Do what you promised. Be faithful. In a word\u2014persevere\u2014just be faithful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFifth: I want to challenge you\u2014number five\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to equip other couples to keep their marriage covenants. Every one of us, as couples in this arena, needs a mission. I charge you, in the presence of God: \u201cRedeem your neighborhoods. Redeem your communities for Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 You are a warrior, not merely on behalf of your family, but you are a protector of the families of your community. May God\u2019s favor be upon you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor 22 years, Robertson McQuilkin served as the president of Columbia Bible College and Seminary. In 1984, his wife\u2014Muriel\u2019s health began to deteriorate with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. She began to lose her basic speech skills. She couldn\u2019t reason, feed herself, [or] clothe herself. She would wander away from their home and get lost in the neighborhood. And so in 1990,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Robertson McQuilkin, as the President of Columbia Bible College and Seminary, stood before the student body, announcing his resignation, as President, to go home and care for his wife of more than 40 years, Muriel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have obtained an audio of that resignation speech\u2014just about 110 seconds\u2019 worth. I want you to listen and read the caption because these words, I believe, are one of the most powerful, profound, living illustrations of being a covenant-keeper that you and I will ever have the privilege of hearing and witnessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Robertson\u2019s Resignation Speech]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robertson: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t, in my life, experienced easy decision-making on major decisions; but one of the simplest and clearest decisions I\u2019ve had to make is this one because circumstances dictated it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMuriel, now, in the last couple of months seems to be almost happy when with me and almost never happy when not with me. In fact, she seems to feel trapped\u2014becomes very fearful, sometimes almost terror. And when she can\u2019t get to me, there can be anger and distress; but when I\u2019m with her, she\u2019s happy and contented. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I must be with her at all times; and, you see, it\u2019s not only that I promised, \u201cin sickness and in health\u2026\u2018til death do us part\u201d\u2014and I\u2019m a man of my word\u2014but as I have said\u2014I don\u2019t know with this group, but I have said publicly\u2014\u201cIt\u2019s the only fair thing. She sacrificed for me for 40 years to make my life possible.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I cared for her for 40 years, I\u2019d still be in debt. However, there\u2019s much more. It\u2019s not that I <em>have to<\/em>, but I <em>get to<\/em>. I love her very dearly, and you can tell it\u2019s not easy to talk about. She\u2019s a delight. What a great honor to care for such a wonderful person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Resignation Speech]\u00a0 [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I was standing in the laundry room, and I was ironing. [Emotion in voice] Dennis called\u2014[I\u2019m sorry] \u2014he called on the phone, and he read me that story. I was watering the clothes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014like I\u2019m watering my notes, right now. And he said, \u201cShould I tell that story?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI just have one question. I need to know\u2014will you love me like that?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s not a woman in this room who doesn\u2019t want to know the answer to that question. There\u2019s not a woman in this room who doesn\u2019t need to hear from her husband, \u201cYes, I will love you like that.\u201d\u00a0 That is a demonstration of commitment and of covenant. It\u2019s what we were made for. It\u2019s what we long for. It\u2019s what we need. God built it in us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a powerful moment from one of the \u201cI Still Do\u201d marriage celebrations; and it was awfully quiet in that auditorium.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s articulating what every woman wants to know: \u201cIf that happened to me\u2014if I became ill \/ if I had a problem\u2014will you, as my husband, lay down your life on my behalf and love me like that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s unfortunate\u2014in our day and age\u2014that that has become such a central question in the institution of marriage; but it has.
